A MESSAGE FROM THE DEAN OF DUKE CHAPEL The Rev. Dr. Luke A. Powery [@LukeAPowery] Dear Friends,

W

hen I arrived at Duke a little more than four years ago, at an early morning breakfast, I asked the PathWays students to tell me what they need from the Chapel.

They didn’t ask for more worship, more sermons, or more service opportunities. They didn’t name tickets to a Duke Men’s basketball game or to the annual Messiah performance. They named only four things: a sense of belonging, to be valued as a person, a safe space for the lost, and last but not least, the four-letter word—love.

“Love” takes one second to say.

Maybe one hour to explain. But it will take your whole life to learn and God shows that it actually takes a life, a sacrificial human life.

At the Chapel, we pray that the building might be a means for encountering this love: the love of God and one another. When they were laying out the plans for the University named in honor of his family, James B. Duke said, “I want the central building to be a church, a great towering church which will dominate all of the surrounding buildings, because such an edifice would be bound to have a profound influence on the spiritual life of the young men and young women who come here.” This “great towering church,” symbolic of our great towering God, has had profound influence on young and old for at least 80 years.

But wouldn’t it be something if we were not only known as the “great towering church” but also known as the great loving church?

When the organs play and the choir sings and all the preachers proclaim and the ministers anoint and pray and many take communion and some get baptized and others are memorialized and others 2 CHAPEL VIEW magazine

married, it is love that motivates these acts; it’s this love that is experienced by others, including students.

The PathWays students were on to something when they said, “love.” They were calling forth, without even knowing it, the future of Duke Chapel as the great loving church, flipping our purpose upside down and back to the gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ who loved us to death.

So in this issue, we celebrate love in the words of Alan Storey, preached from the pulpit at Duke Chapel, love in the Celebration of Music, and love in the photos that populate our #FindSanctuary program. But most of all, we celebrate the students, who should be at the core of any university mission, for continuing to lead us back to the heart of God and the gospel of Jesus Christ with that one word—love.

May this campus, community, nation, and world, know we are Christians by our love and may that love turn the world upside down and brings us to our knees at the altar of our hearts.

he Chapel is Duke University’s logo.

Its tower soars over the campus, and is visible above the trees as we drive into town. Yet Duke Chapel is not only at the center of West Campus; it is also at the core of the image of our university. Many students describe experiencing the Chapel as one of the reasons why they came to Duke.

The Chapel also has another role beyond the symbolic and spiritual: it is a central part of my teaching and research. Duke Chapel is a laboratory for training students how to think about and describe built space and architectural form, how to understand the many parts of Gothic structures, and how all the parts work together to create an architecture that is both harmonious and uplifting. Teaching at the Chapel is also an opportunity to discuss why different types of construction materials (Hillsborough stone; Indiana limestone, Guastavino tile) are significant, and the economic implications of each. In addition, teaching at the Chapel also helps me show students how a threedimensional volume can be represented in a two-dimensional ground plan—and they create their own ground plan in class. In class, students see how the fine details of the portals, windows, and the upper part of the tower could only have been carved from limestone, a material imported at great expense from Indiana. These details are in strong contrast to the uneven, richly colored, and picturesque surfaces created by the exterior use of local Hillsborough stone.

While the use of local stone everywhere on West Campus creates a sense of unity, the styles of the limestone windows and portals

vary widely: Julian Abele, the architect of West Campus, designed a campus that is cohesive and at the same time filled with delightful architectural variety.

My goal as a teacher is to help students become “intelligent” analysts of buildings and architectural planning. Through teaching in the Chapel, I hope to engage my students with the “man-made” world so that they can understand how buildings function and how they affect us. After all, although virtually every moment of a human life is spent in and around architecture, understanding buildings has never been part of our educational system.

How lucky I am to be able to use Duke Chapel and the rest of our campus for teaching!

Engaging with the world we live in is also essential to another part of the work I do as a member of the Wired! Lab at Duke (see duke wired.org). Wired! is a group of faculty who have adopted digital technologies in teaching and research for the disciplines of art, architectural, and urban history. We offer courses that partner the history of art and architecture with appropriate technologies, we design interactive displays for the Nasher Museum of Art (try this one out: medieval.colab.duke.edu), and we offer ongoing, multiyear research initiatives to engage graduate and undergraduate students in collaborative, team-based and long-term research initiatives that create websites, apps, and interactive displays.

Wired! works in Duke Chapel to test out new technologies as part of our teaching and training mission. In 2009, we experimented with laser scanning the chapel crypt; this last May, as soon as the Chapel was open again, we organized a team of Duke graduate students and staff to test out new photogrammetric soft-

Caroline Bruzelius is an American art historian and expert in medieval architecture. She is the Anne Murnick Cogan Professor of Art and Art History at Duke University Trinity College of Arts and Sciences. She teaches the stories of how buildings and places come to be, and why our built world looks the way it does. She is co-founder of Wired!, a group of faculty that integrate digital technologies (3D modeling, laser scanning, interactive displays) into teaching and research.

ware and create an entire, 3D model of the Chapel (aahvs.duke. edu/articles/creating-3d-modelduke-chapel; see also today. duke.edu/2016/05/3dchapel).

These types of new modeling technologies are becoming increasingly important for training graduate students in Art History and Archaeology; models are also increasingly essential for restoration or reconstruction.

(As readers can no doubt imagine, training Duke students with these tools is essential when monuments are at risk from destruction and warfare, as is now the case in the Near East.)

For me and for the Wired! team, the Duke Chapel is therefore not only a place and space for spiritual renewal and inspiration—it is also an essential part of my mission as a teacher and a scholar. And starting in 2017, the Chapel will play a starring role as part of a new multiyear teaching and research project that the Wired! group is initiating: we will teach students how to gather information and create databases in the Duke Archives as the point of departure for modeling the history of the planning and construction of the Duke University campus, one of America’s most effective and beautiful educational institutions.

Jeremiah 8:18-9:1, 1 Timothy 2:1-7, Mark 5:21-43 Is there no balm in Gilead? Is there no physician there? Why then has the health of my people not been restored? The agonizing questions of Jeremiah are the questions of so many people today. For so many people, in so many places here and around the world, the cry is, “My joy is gone, grief is upon me. My heart is sick.

I am hurt. I mourn and dismay has taken hold of me. O that my head be a spring of water and my eyes a fountain of tears so that I might weep day and night.”

What the world needs perhaps more than anything else at this time is people full of courageous compassion. One without the other will not cut it. Courage without compassion will merely add to the hurt. Compassion without courage will not reach the full depths of the hurt.

Jesus was a person full of courageous compassion.

act to go to the other side in the way that Jesus went to the other side. Jesus went in compassion. There was a sick irony. You could go to the other side to hurt, that was legal. You could go to the other side to attack, that was allowed. You could go to the other side to bomb, that was deemed heroic, but woe to you if you go to the other side to heal, to embrace, to delight in the difference, woe to you.

In the gospel reading which we heard this morning, we find Jesus on a beach surrounded by a crowd. The narrator tells us Jesus has just returned from a journey to the other side, the place of other-ness, the place of difference, the place that was only ever spoken of in suspicious and fearful tones. It was a place declared off limits by the cultural police and religious watch dogs of the day. It was strictly taught and firmly believed that the others of the other side were impure and defiled and therefore a great disappointment to God. They were known to be deserving recipients of God’s wrath. It was a criminal

Jesus goes to the other side with compassion. It takes great courage to go to the other side with compassion, to delight in those whom the dominant order believed were defiled. Jesus doesn’t just go to the other side with compassion, he goes in God’s name and he embraces those whom others believe God rejected. In so doing, he was accused of his second crime and that was blasphemy. For Jesus, the real crime was that an other side existed at all. Jesus goes to the other side as if the other side is not an other side. He doesn’t practice any of the purity codes that were required of you if you go to the other side

[and return] because he doesn’t want to validate the theology of other-ing. His third crime is that he is now unclean. He has brought the other side back. He is incarnating the other side, this side.

Then we read that one of the leaders of the synagogue named Jairus came and when he saw Jesus, fell at Jesus’ feet, begging him repeatedly for help for his little daughter was at the point of death.

“Come, please and lay hands upon her so that she might be made well and live.”

Can you hear how dismay has taken hold of his heart? He knows what it means to have a head full of a fountain of tears.

If there was anyone who would have known the laws of other-ing it was Jairus.

In fact, it was Jairus’ job to implement the laws of other-ing. He was a policymaker of prejudice. So, here we witness a defender of the law break the law to approach Jesus.

It takes great courage. It was not just a criminal act for Jairus, but it would have been deemed as a deep act of betrayal. It was for him to say good-bye to the life that he had always known. From the perspective of his family and colleagues, they would have seen Jairus in this moment to forsake his faith, betray his beliefs, dishonor and break the book of order in asking Jesus to lay his defiled hands on his daughter. Jairus is moved by compassion for his daughter.

He is filled with courage and would rather lose his name to defilement, then his daughter to death.

It seems his daughter’s illness has awoken Jairus to the lie that he has always believed, that he is better than others. He has believed that his faithfulness to the law, won him God’s special favor. This law that was meant to protect him and keep he and his family safe is not protecting his daughter and so Jairus comes to Jesus. He courageously comes to Jesus.

For Jairus to go to Jesus, was for Jairus to go to the other side. For Jairus to go to Jesus was for Jairus to begin to let go of some of his privilege and power. No one does this easily. In fact, sometimes we are only able to give up our privilege and power when not to give up our privilege and power will guarantee greater pain.

Jesus full of grace, the one considered a dirty criminal, a defiled embarrassment, a religious blasphemer, gracefully goes with Jairus, honoring the courage it has taken him to kneel at his feet.

And then we read, “A large crowd followed Jesus and pressed in on him, there was a woman who had and she was no better, but rather grew worse.”

Is there no physician? Is there no balm that can heal my bleeding life? She must have cried those words so often: bleeding, unclean, excluded, isolated, avoided, alone. Her joy was gone. Grief walked with her every day of her life.

Jairus implemented the laws of segregation, she suffered under them.

With incredible courage, she enters the crowd. She breaks out of her isolation and in doing so she is breaking the law, it is a criminal act. She is anemic, she is weak, she is frail, but she refuses to be powerless. She refuses to believe the lie that her life, her bleeding life does not matter and so she comes out—out of the closet of isolation. She reasons to herself, “If I am going to die inside here, I might as well die out there, for I have nothing to lose anymore.”

Jairus, after years of privilege and power, had internalized his sense of entitlement.

She on the other hand had to fight internalizing her sense of worthlessness every single day.

We read, “she has heard about Jesus...” this is what happened when people hear about Jesus. She came up behind him in a crowd and touched his cloak. She says to herself, for she has no one else to talk to. She is used to talking to herself, “if I but touch his clothes, I will be made well.” She knows deep in her being the healing power of touch. She knows the pain of not being touched.

Please notice that Jairus with all his privilege and power could come up to Jesus and demand health care for his daughter, but if she needed health care she needed to come up to Jesus and steal it from behind.

Immediately her hemorrhage stopped; and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.” At last, confirmation that her bleeding life matters... at last. At last she faces down the lie that her life does not count. Jesus turned around aware that power had gone forth from him. Jesus does not hold onto his power; Jesus gives his power away! When the powerful and the privileged give their power away, the bleeding stops.

“Who touched me?” He wants to know who touched me. He knows a touch that has taken courage and he wants to honor it. He stops. Can you see where Jairus is?

He is pacing up and down wondering when Jesus is going to come and save his daughter. Jairus is not used to waiting for anyone. As Jesus is engaging with this woman, a deep surgery is happening in Jairus’ life. The cancer of power and privilege is being cut out of his being as he has to wait, because for Jesus bleeding lives take priority over all the privilege and power in the world. For Jairus to be healed, he needs to learn to wait.

“This is right, this is acceptable in the sight of God our savior,” says [Paul to] Timothy. “Who desires everyone to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” Jesus desires everyone to be healed. Healthcare should not be restricted to those who are able to pay for healthcare alone.

The woman knowing what was happening “in fear and trembling, fell down and told him the whole truth.” Touch may heal us, but it is the truth that will finally liberate us and emancipate us from mental slavery. The narrator says she comes in fear, but Jesus sees her courage to come out, to reach out, to speak out, the whole truth. “Daughter your faith,” he meant to say your courage, your courage “has made you well go in peace and be healed of your disease.” Already her bleeding has stopped, so what is Jesus referring to. He is referring to the disease of her believing that she is less than. He gives her what she really needs. She doesn’t just need a pint of blood, she needs family, a place of belonging, and so he claims her as his family, “Daughter, daughter, daughter.”

Then we read, messengers go to Jairus and tell him it is too late that his daughter is dead.

Jesus overhears the bad news that is spoken. He turns to Jairus and says to him, “Do not fear only believe.” The miracle in this passage is that Jairus does just this. He gives up some of his privilege and power, but what has it brought him? Death comes to his family, he should have known better.

As we are on the journey of privilege and power there are always going to be triggers that tempt us to go back to our station of privilege and power, but Jesus says, “Just hang in here with me.” Jairus does.

They arrive at the house, Jesus gets rid of everybody and he raises his little girl from the dead.

When the powerful and the privileged give their power away, the bleeding stops.

I confess to you I am not completely sure what this means, but in the very least, the promise of this scripture is that when you and I bring the people we have always other-ed, when we bring those others into our home, and our family.... then our children will be resurrected from the death that our privilege and our prejudice causes.... Our children will be resurrected from the death that our prejudice causes.

has worked at Duke since October of 1987, but she’s been taking pictures for even longer. Joni enjoys many types of photography, ranging from portraits to wildlife, but, as the business and facilities manager of Duke Chapel, the Chapel remains one of her primary subjects. “I will walk past a window, and the light will be shining through the stained glass in such a way that I think, I’m coming back to this same spot with my camera tomorrow!”

Besides being the perfect subject, because it will “stay still as long as you need,” Joni enjoys photographing the Chapel because a wide range of photographic techniques are required to capture it well. From wide angle shots and panoramas to capturing the details of the Chapel’s stained glass, a breadth of different skills are employed. As a “pretty much self-taught” photographer, Joni appreciates that challenge.

On these pages, Joni shares one place where she finds sanctuary — her perspective from the top of the Chapel’s tower.

PATHWAYS HOUSE To celebrate ten years of ministry at the Pathways House, Duke Chapel, in partnership with ReCity and Durham Cares, invited Dr. John M. Perkins to Durham on November 5, 2016. Known as one of the leading Christian voices to emerge from the American Civil Rights Movement, Dr. Perkins shared with the group how he has sustained his work as a Christian community organizer for more than 50 years.

he Duke Chapel PathWays Fellowship program began in 2004 as a one-year residential discernment program for recently graduated Duke alumni. Ten years of cohorts and 50 fellows later, the PathWays Fellowship continues as an active ministry of Duke Chapel, supporting young people in discerning how God’s call for their life addresses the world’s deep needs. The program also develops places of deep connection with the Durham community as fellows serve in nonprofit or church-related organizations.

“I was still figuring out what it meant to be a Christian and to have a ‘purpose’ or ‘calling.’ Those were new terms for me—and I wanted to make sense of my work and what I was going to be doing with my life and how that was in line with my faith. —Jesse Huddleston, T ’10, PathWays Fellow ’10-11 “One of the organizations that I got involved with during my PathWays year was [the] Religious Coalition for a Nonviolent Durham. As a part of that group, we would go to the sites of murders in Durham and stand and bear witness to the life that was lost and also to witness the grief of the family, and to symbolize hope with our bodies—showing that we don’t forget people who have been killed. And I remember the first one of those that I went to took me to a neighborhood I’d never been in Durham. I was standing next to a housing project I didn’t know existed, and heard the story of a young woman who murdered her boyfriend because he had been beating her. The family of the woman was there, the family of the boyfriend was there, and there was nothing we could do but weep—because it was too broken for any group of people on the pavement to possibly make a difference.

And I thought, ‘What are we doing here? This doesn’t make any sense’. And that was a key part of my PathWays year, realizing that part of being a Christian is standing in places where it makes absolutely no sense to be. And where your body is so uncomfortable with the pain of the world that you just want to run away.

And saying ‘This is what it means to be a follower of Jesus’. To go there, and stand there, and say ‘If God is real, then this matters—and if God is not real, then we’re all idiots, it’s all hopeless.’ That was the beginning for me of realizing what living in Durham would mean, because I’ve been in Durham ever since. And realizing what being a Christian in this space would mean. PathWays was truly an opening of that door for me to step from Duke student into Durham resident.”

A Celebration of Chapel Music

S

ince the original opening of Duke Chapel in the 1930s, music has been infused into every aspect of its life. From university worship to memorial services, weddings to concerts large and small, music has brought people to the Chapel and guided their journeys during their time here.

On September 29, 2016, the Chapel continued in its Year of Celebration with a gala concert of choral music and sing-along hymns. The three choirs of Duke Chapel (the Chapel Choir, Vespers Ensemble, and Evensong Singers) performed individual selections. The choirs also joined forces with a large brass ensemble, organ, and the audience, singing powerful arrangements of favorite hymns of the church.

In the weeks leading up to the concert, more than 550 people participated in Duke Chapel’s first online poll. A Mighty Fortress is Our God was the top-voted hymn. Chapel Organist Christopher Jacobson arranged the setting performed at the Celebration of Music concert.

REFLECTIONS | CHARLIE BERARDESCO, T ’80 CHAIR OF DUKE CHAPEL ADVISORY BOARD Remarks shared at the Celebration of Music concert

I

grew up in a semirural part of the New Jersey Shore—one that as a kid in large part shut down after Labor Day and stayed that way until Memorial Day. And, I grew up attending a small Methodist Church, with an electronic organ and a small, but vigorous, choir that I joined during my senior year of high school—although I can’t really remember why I actually joined.

So, coming to Duke and Duke Chapel was, to say the least, a bit of a culture shock. My first memory of Duke is coming up Chapel Drive as a high school student in the back of my grandmother’s Chevy Nova on a warm August night as friends of my family, who attended the medical school here at Duke, showed us around. The image of Duke Chapel, lit up on that warm evening, is still crystal clear in my memory more than 40 years later.

I never actually entered the Chapel until after I had matriculated. And, then, it simply grabbed hold of me. Well, not just the Chapel—the music. I had never heard such music. It was at Duke Chapel I heard my first pipe organ—in fact, I walked past this Chapel three days a week—I think on my way to my introductory political science class, as they tuned the Flentrop, which was installed my freshman year. I finally got myself up on a Sunday morning to actually attend Chapel (literally 40 years ago this fall) and, oh my, what I saw and heard. The Duke Chapel Choir from the back of the Chapel, singing “Beautiful Savior.” The processional—I had never seen so many choristers. The grand hymns and beautiful liturgy. The preaching. The service ending with a beautiful, and many times haunting, amen.

Later, attending a Messiah performance—my first time hearing that music— and staying even past the “Hallelujah Chorus.” And, maybe not so spiritually, hearing “Fight! Fight! Blue Devils” played from the carillon during the remarkable 1978 basketball season.

As a result of all of this, what I have come to realize is that Duke Chapel was crucial in my realizing that God spoke to me most clearly and effectively through music; and, later, that I, in fact, was most effective at praising God through music.

This realization—from my time here at Duke and at Duke Chapel, experiencing the music that is offered here, led me after law school to want to join a church, which has led me to being an active congregant and church choral singer for nearly 35 years. And, that in turn led me to the most important relationships in my life—including finally meeting my husband singing in the Chancel Choir of our church.

So, Duke Chapel and its music program has had a profound influence on my life—helping me to understand my relationship with God and enhance my spirituality, to a greater love of music and engagement around music, and to meeting people who have had a profound impact on my life and its course. For all of that, I can only say thank you. Thank you to each and every person involved in the Chapel music program, and to all of you who support it and make it possible. And, most importantly, thanks be to God, for the gift of music in our lives.

I

cannot imagine Duke University without the carillon chiming every day at 5 p.m., or without long hours studying (and napping) in the Chapel basement, or without Rodney’s witty one-liners during our Wednesday choir rehearsals. I cannot imagine navigating the stresses of organic chemistry and roommate drama without the community that I’ve found at Duke Chapel.

I joined the Chapel Choir, as well as the Chapel Scholars Program, two years ago because my Duke experience was missing something.

The Chapel has many parts though we are one body; we are students, alumni, visitors, congregation members, faculty, staff. …

We all have unique to-do lists and distinct reasons for worshiping here. But each Sunday morning, as the choir fills every corner of this building with a flood of harmonies, I find sanctuary. I find a home.

To me, Duke Chapel is more than an iconic building on admissions pamphlets, it’s a vibrant family that makes me laugh and supports me. When I am singing with the Chapel Choir, I feel God’s love. For each hour of rehearsal, I am able to remember that there is more to life than GPA’s and believe-it-or-not there’s more than basketball, too.

The Chapel will stand long after I leave Duke; the people will continue to come and go, but this sense of community, this music, and the love that fills these walls is forever. Perhaps the most astonishing part of all of this is that my love of this space and this community is not exceptional. Hundreds of students felt this before me and hundreds more will continue to discover the magic here.

I am grateful for the Chapel Choir and the Chapel Scholars and the Chapel staff and for every part of Duke Chapel. For though there are many parts, we are one body. And tonight we join together in one voice to celebrate this sanctuary, our home.

So thanks be to God!

Chapel Custodian Awarded University’s Highest Honor for Distinguished Service The Chapel’s own Oscar Dantzler received the University Medal along with former trustee Bruce Karsh during the annual Founders’ Day ceremony. Beloved by students, visitors, and others, Oscar is the Chapel’s custodian and unofficial tour guide and historian.

He has served in the role for nearly two decades.

LEARNING GRATITUDE

W

hen I was a young woman, one of my favorite passages in the New Testament reminded me to give thanks.

“In everything give thanks,” Paul writes in 1Thessalonians 5:18, “for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you” (KJV).

Gratitude is a discipline that can be taught. My family required “please” and “thank you” in everyday conversations. Saying grace at meals, however brief, framed our table time with gratitude. These small practices shaped me as a child and later as a parent and grandparent. I learned to “give thanks” even in the face of

difficulty. It is a habit and one for which I remain grateful.

This fall, the Alumni Association at Duke sponsored a day to say thank you on campus. On November 11, the Chapel joined with the Duke Annual Fund to participate in #DukeThanks.

For one day students were asked to take a moment to say thank you to the donors who support the mission of the university. The letters were collected, stamped, and mailed in time for Thanksgiving.

In turn, this is my moment to say thank you to you, the friends of Duke Chapel who offer your support to the mission and ministry of the Chapel.
