THE SOUND OF CELEBRATION Like a recurring motif in a majestic anthem, Chapel Music is an adored theme of the ministry of Duke University Chapel.

For decades, our music has warmed the hearts and stirred the minds of thousands of listeners.

This year, as we return to the restored Chapel and its spiritual soundscape, we celebrate the wonder, beauty, and resonance found in the offerings of our talented staff musicians, the many volunteers, and the esteemed artists who perform with us. In addition to organ recitals and our annual presentation of Handel’s Messiah, we will present the J. S. Bach Cantata Series, Bach’s Complete Organ Works, and two concerts with the Duke Vespers Ensemble in honor of Vespers’ thirtieth anniversary. This will be a wonderful year of music.

Since the moment of Duke Chapel’s opening, music has been infused into every aspect of its life. From university worship to memorial services, weddings to concerts large and small, music brings people to the Chapel and guides their journey during their time here. This year, we celebrate the reopening of the Chapel after a year of restoration, beginning with this grand gala concert. All three Chapel choirs (the Chapel Choir, Vespers Ensemble, and Evensong Singers) will perform individual selections, as well as joining forces with a large brass ensemble on powerful arrangements of favorite hymns of the church.

The concert will also feature a newly commissioned festival anthem by North Carolina composer Dan Forrest and music on the grand organs of the Chapel.

Duke Chapel’s presentations of Handel’s Messiah have long marked the beginning of the Christmas season in the area.

Eighty-four years and several hundred performances later, Messiah continues to be beloved by audiences and performers alike. Internationally renowned soloists join with an orchestra of North Carolina professionals and the Chapel Choir to sing the story of Christ’s life, from a world in darkness to one redeemed by the risen Jesus.

Apr 30, 4pm “Which of the two powers, Love or Music, can elevate man to the sublimest heights? … Why separate them? They are two wings of the soul.”

Hector Berlioz’s choral and orchestral works explore the breadth of the human spiritual experience. His style explores the vast range of human emotion, taking singers from bombastic highs to quiet intimacy. His massive orchestrations echo the ecstasy of adoration and the blasts of Judgement Day. The Te Deum is no exception to this; this hymn of praise will fill Duke Chapel with expressions of humanity’s yearning for God. Berlioz’s work is joined by another work of exultation, Francis Poulenc’s Gloria.

For this concert, the Chapel Choir will join forces with the Choral Society of Durham, as well as professional orchestra and soloists.

This academic year marks the 30th anniversary of the Duke Vespers Ensemble.

During that time, the choir has grown its reputation of excellence in chamber music through regular services and concerts, multiple recordings and appearances at national-level festivals and conferences. This year’s performances showcase the flexibility of the choir and look back on its history, moving from music written in the height of the Renaissance to the present day. In addition, the Vespers Ensemble has commissioned new settings of the Magnificat & Nunc dimittis from Swedish composer Fredrick Sixten, which will premiere this year in worship.

Nov 18, 8pm Victoria’s Mass for the dead is a monument of Renaissance choral music. The combination of voices and brass will fill the Chapel with meditative and captivating sonorities.

A staple of the Chapel Music calendar, the Organ Recital Series showcases internationally acclaimed organists performing beloved favorites, modern masterpieces, and original improvisations. The Chapel’s Aeolian, Flentrop, and Brombaugh organs are all featured in this series.

Oct 16 JANETTE FISHELL, Chair of the Organ Department at Indiana University, has appeared in many of the world’s greatest concert venues. Of her performance at a national AGO convention, one critic wrote: “Fabulous…. a flawless recital. One could only admire her sense of skill and bravura” (The Diapason). Dr. Fishell’s program on the Flentrop organ includes works by Bach and Hindemith, but it will emphasize music of Max Reger, the centennial of whose death is commemorated this year. The recital will be preceded by a lecture at 4:00pm in Goodson Chapel featuring Prof. Christopher Anderson (Southern Methodist University).

Nov 13 ERIK SUTER “brings a rare depth of musicianship, rhythmical subtlety, [and] beautifully detailed articulation, allied to a refined ear for colour” (Organists’ Review). He served as Organist at Washington National Cathedral for nearly a decade, and has performed extensively throughout the United States and Canada, as well as in Europe and Asia. Suter has recorded several CDs for the Gothic, JAV, and Pro Organo labels.

His recital program on the Aeolian organ will consist of the complete organ works of Maurice Duruflé, to honor the 30th anniversary of the composer’s death.

Jan 29 THOMAS MURRAY is “more than an organist, he’s an artist” (San Francisco Chronicle). For many years as the University Organist and a Professor of Music at Yale University, he has taught many of the leading performers of a younger generation. Prof.

Murray has appeared worldwide in recitals and with orchestra, including six national conventions of the American Guild of Organists, which named him International Artist of the Year for 1986. Widely known for his interpretations of Romantic repertoire and orchestral transcriptions, he will perform on the Aeolian organ.

Feb 26 JONATHAN MOYER maintains a dynamic career as an organist, and he has performed throughout the United States, Europe, and Japan, presenting repertoire from the Renaissance to the 21st century. His playing has been described as “everexpressive, stylish, and riveting” (The Baltimore Sun). Moyer is currently an Assistant Professor of Organ at the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, as well as Organist and Director of Music at the Church of the Covenant in Cleveland. His recital program at Duke will feature both the Brombaugh and Flentrop organs.

Apr 2 ROBERT PARKINS is the University Organist and a Professor of the Practice of Music at Duke, and his recordings have appeared on several labels. This season’s recital will feature “German Organ Music of Four Centuries,” including works by Buxtehude, Bach, and Brahms on the Flentrop organ, as well as transcriptions of music by Richard Strauss on the Aeolian.

According to one reviewer, Dr. Parkins’s recording of Music from Elektra “leaves nothing behind in the opera house pit, and… liberally grabs at the blood and guts of the tragedy” (Fanfare).

The Bach series will oer time of reflection, sanctuary, and peace, regardless of one’s religious background.

The cantatas were explicitly designed to be theologically rich, educational, and inspirational for one purpose — to glorify God and refresh the human soul. In the same way, this series provides a modern connection with this great music of the past, exploring both the theological underpinnings of the pieces, as well as their sheer musical brilliance.

Much like the plays of William Shakespeare, the music of Bach represents a summit of human achievement. Throughout his life the organ was the instrument that proved an indispensable musical companion. From his earliest years to his deathbed, there was hardly a time in Bach’s life when he was not obliged to play the organ and compose for it. Because of this, the organ works form a centerpiece of his creative evolution and existence.

Sep 11 · Feb 5, 1pm Duke’s 50-bell carillon is one of the oldest such instruments in the American South. Mr. Hammond’s recitals will feature music of “Celebration and Remembrance” in the fall and honor the 65th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II’s accession in the spring.
