Director's Note Beginning in July 2017, Martha Reeves assumed the role as Director of Markets and Management Studies.

I have been teaching at Duke for about 16 years. Before arriving at Duke, I was a Program Director in Executive Education at The Kenan Flagler Business School at UNC and before that I taught business courses at the University of Georgia. I held various management positions at American Express in both England and the United States.

When you join an organization, business or otherwise, the organization is likely to train you or instruct you in the way they do things. This is particularly true of consulting and banking. Because of this we want to provide students an opportunity to build skills that any employer would want that are not necessarily industry or company specific. These include the ability to think analytically and to use data, the ability to judge the merits of different ideas, communication skills (both written and oral), and the ability to work in team situations. These skills never go out of fashion.

Our program provides a business education grounded in both practical applications and business theory.

Our instructors have both business experience and deep knowledge in specific fields.

I know that students are concerned about where they will end up after graduation. One thing I would like to say to all of them is to take advantage of what Duke has to offer, both in terms of courses and extra-curricular activities.

And for seniors, don't worry so much.

Everything will work out.

What is M&M?

Meet the largest certificate program at Duke!

The Markets & Management Studies Certificate program began in 1990 to serve undergraduate students interested in business fields. Since that time, the certificate program has grown to be one of the largest and longest running certificates offered at Duke and attracts a wide range of students. The program's interdisciplinary nature allows students to combine practical business skills with various

other academic interests from across the university. The certificate will be different for all students as they can tailor the courses to their specific needs and interests. Students receiving the certificate are able to experience the more practical side of a business education, gleaning from the many years of corporate experiences from our program instructors.

Student Stories I was fortunate enough to know going into college freshman fall that I wanted to earn the MMS Certificate. As a result, I have taken a lot of MMS courses already, ranging from Global Cultures to International Business, and have enjoyed each and every one of them! I believe that all of my MMS professors have prepared me not only for this past summer [interning with Gruccio Financial Services] but for my future as a business professional. The most important lesson I learned from my experiences is that the world TRULY is yours!

M&M averages over 400 students and represents over 30 different majors and minors.

Students from our program may major in any subject. Many of our students major in: Public Policy, Economics, Psychology, and Sociology Some of the common fields our students go into post graduation are banking and finance, marketing, technology, and management.

The capstone is one of the final courses you take in the program. The course serves as a way to apply all of the skills learned over the course of the certificate. Capstones include some form of a project or simulation.

M&M students choose two core courses.

These core courses help to provide you with knowledge on everything from relevant business data analysis to understanding networks.

Student Ambassadors: Mikaela Wellner When I arrived at Duke three years ago I expected most of my classes to follow the typical college framework: large lectures with limited personal interaction. Yet, to my pleasant surprise my Markets & Management classes could not have been more different.

My sophomore year I took MMS 220: Marketing Management with Professor Lin and can positively say this class solidified my interest pursuing marketing after college. The class was relatively small which gave me the opportunity to participate in a way I was not able to in my larger intro lectures. It was also largely project based which let me interact with my classmates in smaller settings outside of the classroom.

One of the most incredible aspects of this course, however, was the real life experience it offered me.

Throughout the semester, in our smaller groups, we worked to pitch marketing plans to McKinney—an established advertising agency in Durham. We went on multiple site visits to tour the agency, learn what working at one would be like, and work directly with team members on proposing a new marketing strategy for the company.

M&M OFFERS A STUDENT AMBASSADOR PROGRAM WHERE A GROUP OF STUDENTS REPRESENT THE CERTIFICATE ACROSS CAMPUS. MIKAELA IS ONE OF OUR FIRST AMBASSADORS, AND SHE SHARES ABOUT HOW M&M HAS HELPED TO DEFINE HER CAREER GOALS.

McKinney had recently acquired a new client that was releasing its new bed in a box product. Our task was to incorporate this new client and product into McKinney’s marketing platform and optimize product introduction.

This class was so valuable because it took what we learned in the classroom and introduced it into the real world. As someone who hopes to work in marketing after graduation, this experience was invaluable. This course is so unique because it provides experience that is not offered in many other Duke courses. My work from this course has also been so helpful when speaking to potential employers. It provided me with a level of experience I would have not otherwise had.

My MMS classes at Duke have consistently been some of my favorite. The program offers a diverse range of focuses that let me pursue my interests in ways I hadn’t initially thought.

Social Media Conference BEHIND THE SCENES OF MARKETS AND MANAGEMENT'S SPRING 2018 CONFERENCE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

In Spring of 2018, Markets and Management Studies hosted its social media conference Social Media: Behind the Scenes. M&M brought in various speakers from Duke and around the US who talked to students about influencer marketing, social media content planning, and personal branding. The two keynote speakers Gabrielle Delva and Nikki Jenkins who both work at Google in social media and influencer marketing. They were able to bring their expertise to students and offer insider knowledge about how complex marketing strategies work.

Attendees of the social media conference were able to participate in workshops from various speakers. One of the workshop leaders, John Andrews (right) is the CEO of Photofy and spoke to students on crowdsourcing and user generated content.

Also featured at the event was a panel of M&M students who offered practical tips they learned from working in social media. This panel (below) included: Anya Bali, Editor-inChief of DukeStudents; Zoe Bakker, Growth Marketing Manager at Adwerx; Mary Kate Weggeland, Director of Marketing for Nasher MUSE; and Kara Penn, Media Strategy Intern at McKinney and President of Duke Marketing Club (not shown).

GLOBAL EDUCATION PROGRAMS #DUKEINGENEVA

The Duke in Geneva Program is co-directed by MMS Director Martha Reeves and Philosophy Professor Alex Rosenberg. It offers a 6 week immersive experience into international business and political philosophy of globalization.

Duke in Geneva students take several excursions during their trip abroad. Some of these include:Â the World Trade Organization, the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights, and CERN.

Many of our students study in programs around the world, some of which are able to offer MMS credit!

When may I enroll in the Markets & Management Studies program?

Students can register for Markets & Management courses during their freshman year but may not formally enroll. Sophomores and juniors who have officially declared their major can enroll in the Markets & Management program. Seniors may not enroll in the Markets & Management program. To enroll, visit: markets.duke.edu/certificate/apply/form

Can I get course credit for a course for both my major and for the certificate?

Students may use up to 2 Markets & Management courses to satisfy the requirements of any major, minor, or other certificate program.

Because of this, many M&M students are able to "double-count" courses to help them complete the certificate.Â

What is the difference between a certificate and a minor?

Certificate programs are analogous to a minor, but they are interdisciplinary in nature. There is usually more structure to a certificate than a minor. Most certificate programs include 1 or more core courses and a capstone or introductory course. Also, most certificate programs require 6 or more courses; many minors require 5 courses
