ou don’t often hear Rihanna and Coldplay mentioned in the context of the Gilded Age, but Katie Holmes proved the two can happily coexist during our June 7 cover shoot. At 123 East 35th Street stands an imposing BeauxArts mansion that has remained a private residence since it was built in 1903. This rare vestige of grandeur was built by James F.D. Lanier and his wife Harriet. The two were old-monied, prominent members of East Coast society who purchased two 1854 brownstones and quickly razed them to make way for his new house. He chose the firm of Hoppin & Koen to design the double wide, eight-story home. A verdigris copper mansard roof, cast iron railing and ionic pilasters made the house stand out beautifully, but not ostentatiously, among its more dour brownstone neighbors. The

Laniers’ guests would have been awed by the classically designed entrance hall that features an arched-rose medallion ceiling that flows into a bright columned gallery illuminated by three leadedglass skylights and a marble wall fountain. A mahogany staircase led guests to a sumptuous green and gold salon across from the warm, inviting oak paneled library. Overnight visitors would stay in one of the equally grand nine bedrooms in the f loors above with the staff nearby in their own wing. The James F.D. Lanier Residence stayed in the Lanier family until 1984, when it was purchased by its current owner. The home was recently listed by Edward Joseph of Christie’s International Real Estate for $33 million and, thanks to the N YC Landmarks Preser vation Commission, it will remain a living link to New York’s Gilded Age. christiesrealestate.com

e’re very excited to share our summer issue starring actress and director K atie Holmes, whose new film, Together Alone, comes out on July 29. We also spoke with actress and singer Selena Gomez about her new beauty brand, Rare Beauty, and one of our favorite creative minds, Ken Fulk, whose new book, Ken Fulk: The Movie in My Mind, should be glued to your coffee table. If you’re traveling to some of our suggested destinations (Turkey, Italy or Spain), be sure to bring a copy of James Reginato’s latest family portrait, Growing Up Getty, a fascinating look at one of America’s richest–and most complicated–families. We always love collaborating with some of our favorite creatives, including photographers like Royal Gilbert, who spent May running around the Cannes Film Festival shooting some of our favorite new–and established–talents for our portfolio. We hope you enjoy reading this issue as much as we did producing it. Stay tuned for much more to come with our 10th anniversary this fall.

ith great beauty all around, the French Riviera is the perfect place to celebrate film and fashion. Since 1998, one of the arbiters of great style, Swiss watch and jewelry house Chopard, has been a partner of the Cannes Film Festival. “Since that very first festival, I knew it would blossom into a beautiful relationship that would carry on for many years,” says Chopard co-president and artistic director Caroline Scheufele. “I’ve loved the cinema ever since I was young. Cinema makes people dream, and so do our jewelry creations.” It’s the perfect place for a jewelry house like Chopard to debut over-the-top high jewelry creations that are meant to be showcased on the red carpet. “It’s the most famous red carpet in the world and is the perfect place to unveil our beautiful high jewelry creations from the Red Carpet Collection,” she explains. This year, Scheufele created 75 high jewelry pieces for the 75th edition of the festival, for a collection titled Chopard Loves Cinema. The latest Red Carpet Collection honors the films that have had a lasting impact on the artistic director, from To Catch a Thief and Cinderella to 101 Dalmatians. For the occasion, the Maison has debuted fantastical jewels like a pumpkin ring set with spessartite garnets and tsavorites, which opens to reveal a diamond slipper, and a bracelet featuring dogs sporting a coat of black and white diamonds. ■

ichard Mille’s new 38-02 Tourbillon Bubba Watson is the fourth watch bearing the golfer’s name created over the athlete’s 11-year collaboration with the Swiss luxury watchmaker. Produced in a numbered limited edition of 50 pieces, this timepiece is personal for the 43-year-old American golfer, who has 12 PGA Tour victories under his belt. DuJour talked to Watson to learn more about the ongoing creative process with the brand.

33

You’ve been an ambassador for Richard Mille for 11 years. Why is it a fit for you? I love their creativity, beauty and artistry. I think outside the box and so do they. That’s the beauty of Richard and, over the last eleven years, I’ve learned that they’re not scared to take on any project. So naturally, Richard and I became friends and now, I’m a part of the family.

SUMMER 2022

What do you love about the color pink? Pink stands out. It’s a color that everybody notices right away. Pink, to me, is about giving, about charity. My pink driver that I play golf with has helped me raise millions of dollars for charity. To make a pink timepiece with Richard is the symbol of who “Bubba Watson the golfer” is. So I just thought it would be a cool piece to do. Which RM watches do you wear and on what occasion? I truly love the diving watches because, you know, I’m out on the boat fishing with my kids or swimming at the beach here in Pensacola. Obviously when I’m out and about in town, I’m wearing the Bubba watch. If your watch has your name on it, you should probably wear that one the most! What do you love about wearing a watch? I’m only late sometimes, but wearing a watch definitely helps me get to places on time. What’s your relationship with time? You can never get time back, so time is very valuable in my life. I’ve never been late to a tee time, so my professional career is doing alright. How do you spend your free time? Spending time with the kids. Spending time with my wife. Trying to do stuff together as a family like going to the beach, fishing, getting out on the boat away from our hectic life. Away from phones and the internet, where you can just enjoy life and enjoy the beauty that’s around us. ■

R

ecently, it’s become clear to me that everyone of all ages should, with some exceptions, be adding vitamin C into our daily skincare routines. This powerful antioxidant protects our skin against free radical damage triggered by environmental aggressors like UV exposure and pollution. “As we age, the levels of vitamin C in our skin decrease,” explains aesthetician Edyta Jarosz of the Shafer Clinic in New York City. “That combined with exposure to environmental factors (UV light, pollution) and free radicals results in premature skin aging.” Adding vitamin C to your skin care routine can help offset this damage. “Vitamin C is a watersoluble vitamin that works to stimulate collagen production by expediting cell turnover.” says Dr. Dendy Engelman, dermatologist and Mohs surgeon at the Shafer Clinic. “It also helps brighten the skin and reduce scarring and hyperpigmentation over time.” “The great thing about vitamin C as an ingredient category is that it’s as versatile as it is beneficial for skin,” says Drunk Elephant founder Tiffany Masterson. “Ascorbic acid is the best overall form of vitamin C, because its wide-ranging benefits for skin are the most supported in terms of published research. It can also stand on its own in a formula—if you have a good amount in a serum or moisturizer, 10-15 percent, then you really don’t need much else to gain benefits like firmer skin, reduced hyperpigmentation and it pairs well with other actives, too.” Dr. Engelman recommends applying a topical vitamin C serum once per day, in the morning. “Because serums have a relatively small molecule size and potent ingredients, they tend to be highly effective, so using a vitamin C serum will help this antioxidant penetrate deeply into skin and work its magic,” Dr. Engelman explains. And, by wearing a vitamin C serum underneath your SPF, you also help slow down premature aging and create a barrier that prevents your sunscreen from causing breakouts. Jarosz agrees: “when used regularly (compliance is key), one will also notice a reduction in the appearance of fine lines and improved skin firmness.” Vitamin C also helps address uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation and dark spots.

C and BE SEEN

Brighten and boost your skin’s radiance with these powerful vitamin C serums BY NATASHA WOLFF

Can those with sensitive and reactive skin use vitamin C as well? Yes, but with caution. “If applied too liberally, vitamin C can be irritating and cause acne breakouts, redness or irritation,” Dr. Engelman explains. For certain cases of extremely sensitive skin, she recommends using a low-concentration formula in the 8-10 percent range. “If you have sensitive skin, it’s important to test a small amount of your vitamin C serum before you apply on your face,” says Jarosz. “Switching your vitamin C use to every 2-3 days instead of daily can help improve your tolerance.” Masterson suggests avoiding vitamin C formulas that contain silicone, essential oils, fragrances or dyes or drying alcohols, which can inflame the skin. ■ 1 Flavo-C Serum, $105, ISDINCEUTICS, isdin.com 2 Vital-C Antioxidant Day Serum, $80, CIRCUMFERENCE, circumferencenyc.com 3 10% Pure Vitamin C Serum, $40, LA ROCHE POSAY, laroche-posay.us 4 CC Me Serum, $66, SUMMER FRIDAYS, summerfridays.com 5 Potent-C Power Serum, $105, PETER THOMAS ROTH, sephora.com 6 15% Vitamin C + E + Ferulic Acid Serum, $49, SKINCALL BY BRANDEFY, skincallco.com 7 C+ Advanced Antioxidant Serum, $90, GLYTONE, glytone-usa.com 8 Sunnyside C Glow Serum, $68, HOLIFROG, holifrog.com 9 Vitamin C+B+E Ferulic Serum, $145, DR LARA DEVGAN, drlaradevgan.com 10 Youology 7-Day Vitamin C Treatment Serum, $49, YOUNIQUE, youniqueproducts .com 11 Clarté Vitamin C Brightening Serum, $325, RÉVIVE, reviveskincare.com 12 C-Firma Fresh Day Serum, $78, DRUNK ELEPHANT, drunkelephant.com 13 C.E.O 15% Vitamin C Brightening Serum, $122, SUNDAY RILEY, sundayriley.com 14 Bearberry & Vitamin C Glow Serum, $59, ALPYN BEAUTY, alpynbeauty.com 15 Daily Dose Vitamin C + SPF 40 Serum, $46, SUPERGOOP, supergoop.com 16 20% Hyaluronic Acid Serum, $125, GOOPGLOW, $125, GOOPGLOW, goop.com 17 C E Ferulic, $169, SKINCEUTICALS, skinceuticals.com 18 Rescue Vitamin C + Squalane Serum, $150, JOANNA VARGAS, joannavargas.com 19 The Serum, $375, AUGUSTINUS BADER, augustinusbader.com 20 The Good C Vitamin C Serum, $145, DR BARBARA STURM, drsturm.com 21 Vitamin C Serum, $45, MARIO BEDESCU, mariobadescu.com

PROFILE

A RARE Breed

Selena Gomez’s inclusive beauty brand, Rare Beauty, takes a hard look at the industry’s negative impact on mental health and strives to be better

S

inger and actress Selena Gomez wanted to use her inf luence to make positive changes. So the Only Murders in the Building star (its second season is now streaming on Hulu) created a beauty line, Rare Beauty, offering a versatile and inclusive range of multi-use products. “Growing up in a makeup chair, I struggled with society’s impossible beauty standards, which negatively affected my mental health,” Gomez explains to DuJour. “I felt a lot of pressure at a young age to look a certain way, so I wanted to create a brand that changes the conversation around beauty and instead celebrates individuality and uniqueness. The beauty industry is so powerful, and there haven’t been enough conversations being had about mental health.” To this end, Gomez and her brand have committed to raising $100 million for mental health organizations over the next 10 years. “Historically, beauty can have a negative impact on mental health, and we are flipping that,” she says. “We are on a mission to destigmatize mental health, and one of the ways we do that is by donating 1 percent of all Rare Beauty sales to the Rare Impact Fund to expand mental health services and education for

young people. If I had access to these types of resources growing up, my journey would look much different. Rare Beauty is on a mission to break down unrealistic standards of perfection and help everyone celebrate what makes them rare.” Do-gooding aside, the makeup formulations are flattering, easy to use and effective for professionals or novices alike. “Everything has a weightless formula with buildable coverage meant to enhance your natural beauty,” says Gomez. “I like to apply makeup with my hands so it’s important for me to create products that are multipurpose, which is why we use a lot of liquids and creams,” she explains. The brand’s first launch, the Liquid Touch Weightless Foundation, has an inclusive range of 48 shades (“Inclusivity is very important to me, and that’s one of the reasons I started the brand,” she says.) and was followed by bestsellers including Soft Pinch Liquid Blush, Positive Light Liquid Luminizer, Positive Light Tinted Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 20 Sunscreen and Perfect Strokes Matte Liquid Eyeliner. “I love seeing how the community uses products in different ways. It’s so inspiring and I learn a lot from our customers!” ■

PALM BEACH Bliss

Interior designer Sergio Mercado worked with a Palm Beach family to create a serene oasis in the sky BY K ASEY CAMINITI

nterior designer Sergio Mercado has been cultivating his signature style for decades, drawing inspiration from the coastal energy of California, the vibrancy of Miami, the timeless glamour of Manhattan and, now, the attitude of Palm Beach. Mercado’s New York City-based namesake design firm has just completed renovations on an Ocean Boulevard penthouse apartment for a young family, the Liberts. Mercado previously collaborated with the couple on their Williamsburg, Brooklyn townhouse (the family splits their time between New York City and Palm Beach) so it was a comfortable and seamless working relationship. “Anderson and Jessica live a very modern lifestyle and are both stylish in a barefoot luxury sort of way,” says Mercado. “Very tasteful, not f lashy.” With two young children, a bustling social life and an affinity for the arts, the oceanfront home features a calming cream-and-gray color palette with a mix of matte and glossy finishes to add texture. “We were going for a warm minimalist approach to the interior architecture,” says Mercado. “I wanted the focus of the apartment to be on the views and not strong architectural details, which really worked.” With a striking bar designed to look like a block of Calacatta marble and carefully curated beach-chic furnishings, Mercado has brought laid-back luxury to life in this Palm Beach oasis. ■

In Growing Up Getty: The Story of America's Most Unconventional Dynasty, Vanity Fair writer-at-large James Reginato offers an enthralling and comprehensive look into the contemporary state of one of the wealthiest—and most misunderstood—family dynasties in the world. Now spread across four continents a new generation of unique and even outrageous Gettys are bringing this legendary family onto the global stage in the 21st century. Through access to J. Paul Getty’s diaries, never-before-seen love letters and fresh interviews with family members and friends, Reginato takes us deep into the lives of this charismatic and elusive clan. In the accompanying excerpt, Ann Getty hosts an elaborate dinner party at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Temple of Dendur as the fate of Getty Oil hangs in the balance.

s 1983 drew to a close, the simmering tensions between the board of Getty Oil and Gordon explo ded. The trigger had been pulled on November 14, when the lawsuit in his nephew Tara Getty’s name was filed in Superior Court of Los Angeles County. This action also compelled Harold Williams, the president of the J. Paul Getty Trust, to go into high gear: he had to protect the value of the 12 percent of the stock that the museum owned. Gordon and Ann flew from San Francisco to New York to meet with new, high- powered members of the Getty Oil board who had been nominated by Gordon but recruited by Ann—including Laurence A. Tisch, chairman of the Loews Corporation, and A. Alfred Taubman, the Detroit real estate developer who had recently acquired Sotheby’s auction house. With the apartment at 820 Fifth Avenue not yet ready, Ann and Gordon ensconced themselves in a suite at the Pierre Hotel,

formerly owned by his father. The fate of Getty Oil hung in the balance. The stakes couldn’t have been higher. Just then, Ann gave the most fabulous party New York had seen in ages. The evening of November 30, a Wednesday, she put on a white satin Dior gown embroidered with gold and welcomed two hundred guests to a dinner in the Temple of Dendur at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, to celebrate Gordon’s fiftieth birthday. In addition to a squadron of Gettys, including Gloria, Aileen, Ariadne, and Mark, there was a contingent of forty leading San Franciscans, including the indomitable Denise Hale, all of whom Ann had flown in. Among the notable New Yorkers and Europeans were Brooke Astor, Vicomtesse Jacqueline de Ribes, Lynn Wyatt, Nan Kempner, Bianca Jagger, Ahmet and Mica Ertegun, Carolina and Reinaldo Herrera, Robin Hambro, Pat Buckley, and, of course, Greek-born f inancial advisor Alecko Papamarkou, Ann’s con stant companion. After a performance by violinist Isaac Stern, Luciano Pavarotti rushed over from the Metropolitan Opera as soon as the curtain fell on his performance of Ernani, and surprised everyone with his rendition of “Happy Birthday.” “It was one of the best parties ever,” proclaimed Mrs. Buckley. Five nights later, Buckley presided over the other most glamorous party of the season, under the same roof—the opening of the Yves Saint Laurent retrospective at the Met’s Costume Institute, where Gordon’s late sister-inlaw, Talitha, was extolled. The very next night, many of the same guests, and about a thousand others, filled Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, to hear soprano Mignon Dunn of the Metropolitan Opera give a recital featuring eighteen songs from The White Election, composed by Gordon Getty, which incorporated poems by Emily Dickinson. The drama was only beginning. A couple weeks later, J. Hugh Liedtke, chairman of Houston-based Pennzoil, announced a tender offer for 20 percent of Getty Oil’s outstanding stock. The company was officially in play. In San Francisco, Ann and Gordon had barely unpacked; they rushed back to New York, checking into the Pierre again. An enormous cast of characters representing all sides of the deal took up their positions in the suites and conference rooms of every leading hotel, law firm, and investment bank in town. Following frantic negotiations, Pennzoil raised its offer—it was now a $110 per share leveraged buyout. Considering that GET had been trading at around $50 a year before, it was, in many eyes, a great deal for shareholders— Gettys and non-Gettys alike. Then things hit an impasse. Liedtke was frustrated because he had been able to deal only with Gordon’s battery of bankers,

lawyers, and advisors. He announced he would pull out if he couldn’t meet with the man himself. “I don’t want them telling Mr. Getty what I think or what I’m offering. I want to sit right across the table from him and tell him myself so there won’t be any question,” said the tough Texan, according to The Taking of Getty Oil by Steve Coll. No way, Gordon’s people responded. Liedtke pondered how to get a message directly to Gordon. On December 30, seeking advice, he phoned fellow Houstonian Fayez Sarofim, a stock fund manager and investment advisor who also owned a big block of Getty Oil. Though he was now a wellestablished Texan, the Cairo-born Sarofim descended from Egyptian nobility. His ancestry, combined with his tight-lipped inscrutability, had earned him the nickname “the Sphinx” in financial circles. (Though the Sarofim heritage stretches back seemingly to the pharaohs, the family name today is perhaps most widely known thanks to Fayez’s live-wire daughter, Allison, who throws New York’s most extravagant and exclusive annual Halloween party in her West Village townhouse.) Sarofim told Liedtke he knew how to handle it: he would call Papamarkou, who could in turn call Ann to ask her to pass Liedtke’s meeting request to Gordon. It worked. Close to midnight on New Year’s Eve, the chairman boarded the Pennzoil corporate jet in Houston, bound for New York. His meeting with Gordon was set for New Year’s Day. Liedtke turned his Texan charm on Getty, recalling his wildcat- ting days in Oklahoma and his acquaintance with J. Paul Getty. His son agreed to a $112.50 a share offer from Pennzoil. In essence, Ann and Alecko had gotten the biggest corporate acquisition in history back on track. Then the whole thing jumped to a different track. Gordon’s niece Claire got a judge to temporarily block the deal, so she and other family members could evaluate it. During the two-day pause, Texaco chairman John K. McKinley swooped in and offered $125 a share. After wild, round-the-clock negotiations (and after Claire dropped her opposition), Texaco officially won the prize when the papers for the $10 billion deal were signed around 3 a.m. in Gordon’s suite at the Pierre.

Joseph and Sabine Getty at home

Pennzoil promptly sued Texaco, claiming it had a deal with Getty Oil even if the contracts weren’t signed. Thanks to a clause that Gordon had requested in the negotiations—in which Texaco indemnified the Getty Trust and the J. Paul Getty Museum against any lawsuits that might arise from the sale—the Getty family was not a party to this suit; they banked their billions. After a jury in Houston decided there had been a binding agreement, Texaco was ordered to pay Pennzoil $10.5 billion in damages, the largest jury verdict in history. The two oil companies battled for four more years in court over the judgment. Eventually, Texaco paid a $3 billion settlement to Pennzoil, and went bankrupt. Getty Oil ceased to exist; twenty thousand employees lost their jobs. Oil prices plunged. Having cashed out at the top of the market, the Getty family’s $4 billion fortune was secure. That’s capitalism—as Gordon explained to an auditorium of University of San Francisco students a couple of years after the sale. “I’m in favor of takeovers, the more hostile the better,” he declared. “I like to look at takeovers, and hostile takeovers in particular, as efficiency and economic evolution in action.” Whatever the explanation for their good fortune, the Gettys were, once again, on top. Gordon Getty was the richest man in America. ■

ounded in 1997 by art collectors and gallery owners Ernst and Hildy Beyeler, Fondation Beyeler in Basel is the most visited art museum in Switzerland. It also has one of the most comprehensive collections of Piet Mondrian paintings in Switzerland, ranging from important early works to the late classics of this 20th century master. The plan for a large Piet Mondrian exhibition at the Fondation Beyeler inspired a research and conservation project with the two-year support of Swiss luxury beauty brand La Prairie. That endeavor includes the conservation of four of the artist’s masterpieces (“Composition with Yellow and Blue” (1932), “Tableau No. I” (1921-1925),“Lozenge Composition with Eight Lines and Red (Picture No. III)” (1938) and “Composition with Double Line and Blue” (1935)). “As a Swiss house, we are particularly proud to support one of Switzerland’s most prestigious cultural institutions,” says global chief marketing of f icer Greg Prodromides. “Bringing La Prairie’s support to a project dedicated to preserving iconic works of art from the passing of time gives even more meaning to this collaboration.” Fondation Beyeler will employ indepth research and a multi-disciplined approach to ensure the longev ity of Mondrian’s precious artworks. The partnership was a unique opportunity to give something back to the world of art and culture and pay homage to La Prairie’s artistic heritage, which is greatly inspired by Mondrian’s minimalist aesthetic, geometric precision, and purity of form. ■

Summer, ITALIAN STYLE La dolce vita never gets old and this season promises to be one of the very best BY CHRISTINA OHLY EVANS

After several years of travel disruption, no place is more in demand this summer than the chic cities and dramatic coastlines of Italy. Perhaps the most anticipated opening of summer (or the year, for that matter) is Passalacqua, a historic private villa that has been lovingly transformed into a 24-suite hotel on the edge of Lake Como, just above the picturesque village of Moltrasio. Once home to composer Vincenzo Bellini, and host to literary and political figures including Winston Churchill, Passalacqua is the passion project of Paolo, Antonella and stylish CEO Valentina DeSantis—a family with multigenerational ties to the lake whose sister property, the iconic Grand Hotel Tremezzo, has set the standard for understated elegance for decades. With majestic terraced gardens dotted with centuries old trees and fountains, the villa is an ideal destination for those seeking a quick, quiet respite from the bustling world beyond. Other painstakingly perfect details include a lush rose garden, a vegetable garden that supplies the hotel’s creative kitchens, an open air gym, and exquisitely restored glass houses—complete with flowering fruit trees. But it is the 24 suites—set within the original villa—as well in the original stables and Casa del Lago—set at the edge of the lake—that are truly stunning. From a double height suite where Bellini once played, to the sumptuous marble-clad bathrooms (each single slab hand-chosen from the Breccia Pontificia in Verona—the same found in The Vatican) and vivid frescoed ceilings, Passalacqua is a relaxing retreat like no other. For shimmering lake views, a game of tennis at the water’s edge or a sunset sail in one of the villa’s beautifully restored vintage boats, book in at Passalacqua and leave the world behind. passalacqua.it

Set in a 19th century mansion in the heart of the city’s medieval Centro Storico, the five-star Vista Palazzo Verona is a special, family-owned gem offering 13 palatial suites and just 3 standard rooms that are anything but. Owned by the family-operated Lario Hotels—the group behind the stunning Vista Palazzo Lago di Como—the opulent property offers outsized amenities for such a bijoux hideaway: an indoor swimming pool—the only such hotel facility in Verona—as well as a spa, library, wine tasting room, and athletic facility are all part of the program. But it is the drinks and dining spaces that really differentiate it—from the penthouse level Sottovoce restaurant and bar to a rooftop terrace with 360-degree views of medieval rooftops and the rolling hills of Lake Garda in the distance. verona.vistapalazzo.com

Originally built in 1822 as the Locanda Pagano, the hotel was a gathering spot for artists and intellectuals—many of whom left drawings and poems on the walls in lieu of payment. In keeping with that spirit, interior designer Francis Sultana has conceived a 50-room and suite “home from home” complete with new frescoes by Rome-based Roberto Ruspoli. Exploring the best of Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah, from kayaking around the Louvre to zip-lining around the UAE’s tallest peak BY CÉLINE BOSSART

ew things are more synonymous with the Emirates than Dubai’s soaring skyscrapers and its similarly high standard of luxury. Dubai is, of course, a must for any traveler with an affinity for the finer things, but there’s plenty of this to be found throughout neighboring Emirates—specifically Abu Dhabi, the federation’s largest by a landslide, and Ras Al Khaimah, the northernmost of the seven Emirates and home to the UAE’s tallest mountain peak. And though the two are on opposite ends of the country, visiting both Abu Dhabi and Ras Al Khaimah can easily be done in one ABOVE: well-planned trip. In fact, it’s an essential Telal Resort Al Ain combination for those looking to pair a bit outside Abu Dhabi of adventure with leisurely lounging. RIGHT: Getting to Abu Dhabi from the United Louvre Abu Dhabi States is easier than ever, with direct flights from New York, Chicago, Washing ton D.C. and more with Etihad, the go-to airline for travel to and from the capital city. Book a lie-f lat Business or First class seat—getting a good night’s sleep on this long-haul journey is crucial to maximizing your time in the Emirates, especially when visiting more than one locale. With scores of five-star hotels in the area, choosing your Abu Dhabi accommodations is easy, but the Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi Hotel and Villas on Saadiyat Island is one of the best. It goes without saying that no visit to Abu Dhabi is complete without a visit to the Louvre, a striking oasis of beautifullydesigned buildings surrounded by the sea. As a whole, Abu Dhabi’s vast biodiversity is seemingly impos sible to capture in one place, but the National Aquarium—the larg est in the Middle East—does an impressive job. Located in Al Qana, a buzzing cultural center that debuted just last year, this aquarium is made up of 10 distinctly different spaces, each a world of its own, taking kids and adults of all ages on an immersive expe dition through the Arabian Gulf. With over 46,000 animals and a variety of unique, personal experiences like glass bottom boat tours and diving with sharks, you’ll be surprised at how much there is a to explore. The drive from Abu Dhabi city to Ras Al Khaimah is an adventure in itself, and depending on how much time you want to spend on the road, there are several different (and equally breathtaking) routes to take. Driving directly up the coast will take you through Dubai, where you could spend as little or as long as you’d like before continuing north. Alternatively, heading inland to Al Ain will take you slightly out of the way, but it’s absolutely worth the trek, even if just for a brief stop at Telal Resort’s Zaman Lawal Heritage Village. Here, traditional Emirati culture is shared through food, drink, history and more—sipping Arabic coffee in a classic welcoming salon, wandering the local souk and riding camels—with a luxe modern resort nearby. Booking a few nights at Telal is the perfect retreat complete with desert safaris, great dining and picturesque dunes. From Al Ain, the last leg of this road trip through the Emirates clocks in at just under three hours, and another oasis awaits in the form of the Waldorf Astoria Ras Al Khaimah. This seaside palace is home to 346 impeccably-appointed guest rooms and some of the best restaurants in the area, not to mention the panoramic views of the Arabian Sea and nearby Hajar Mountains. You’ll likely not want to leave the property, but Jebel Jais—the tallest peak in the UAE—is not to be missed. MAS MADRID SANTO MAURO, A LUXURY COLLECTION HOTEL Set in the stylish residential area of Chamberí, Santo Mauro offers an opulent step back in time—to an 18th century mansion with a mix of period styles and global inf luences. Interiors have been overseen by noted designer Lorenzo Castillo, whose preference for rich fabrics and elegant antiques makes the 49 palatial rooms and suites—as well as libraries and a bijoux bar—feel like a welcom ing home away from home. Three historic buildings—one a horse stable that has been turned into light-filled rooms—are sur rounded by lush gardens and make Santo Mauro a truly unique find. In public spaces guests are surrounded by plush furnishings in rich green and gold velvet, Chinoiserie wall coverings, as well as touches of the black lacquer and Qing Dynasty portraiture favored by the property’s past owners. The hotel’s El Jardin is the ideal spot for casual dining al fresco, while epicures will love the tasting menus at La Biblioteca Gresca. The winning combination of hotelier Ian Schrager and British architect, John Pawson, is in dazzling effect once again at this 200-room, 23-suite property that’s set on the historic Plaza de la Descalzas. A mix of the sleek lines, muted lighting and natural finishes that Pawson is known for contrast with an 18th-century Baroque portal that’s been restored by Spanish architect Pedro di Ribera, to create a dazzling, yet authentic destination. Decorative touches range from bespoke sofas with dramatically back-lit shelves to JeanMichel Frank armchairs to recycled bronze stools from Maison Intègre, as well a sculptural pool table by Emmanuel Levet Stenne sculpted from a single slab of white Bianco Neve marble. One of the hotel’s main draws is Jerónimo, a Mexican-influenced restaurant by noted chef Enrique Olivera of Mexico City’s Pujol and Cosme in New York. Using the strong cultural ties between Spain and Mexico as well as local ingredients, guests can dine in a double-height, vibrant dining room or outside on the hotel’s verdant private terrace. SWEET HOLMES WHILE MOST OF US WERE BAKING BANANA BREAD, K ATIE HOLMES PRODUCED, WROTE, DIRECTED AND STARRED IN A FILM

M

ost people came out of the pandemic with not much to show for themselves save a few new bad habits and maybe a larger waistline. Katie Holmes wrote and directed a movie—her second. Alone Together had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June and will be released in theaters and on demand on July 29. In the movie, Holmes, now 43 and a full-time New Yorker herself, plays a food critic who leaves Manhattan just as COVID-19 has begun to shut down the city. She heads upstate to an AirBnB that was reserved by her boyfriend (Derek Luke), only to discover someone else, an artist (Jim Sturgess), is already living there. But this isn’t a horror movie; it’s a romantic one. Though at first they’re the odd couple, sparks begin to f ly after being stuck upstate. Holmes tells the story with a whimsical economy of scale that replicates the trapped feeling many New Yorkers felt during the early days of the pandemic. Holmes illuminates this feeling of isolation while also suggesting it’s a shared experience. In essence, we were all “alone together.” “I was intrigued how it would play out working with a co-star that was also the writer and the director of the project. I’d never experienced that on set before,” Sturgess told DuJour. “But it turned out to be incredibly freeing and exciting. The three main people that I would need to communicate and collaborate with were all wrapped up into one person, and that person was right there in front of me, and thankfully was hugely open and generous.” For Holmes, there was a steep learning curve despite having been on sets for the last 20 years. “I’m always learning, and you’re just trying to figure out how to tell a story in every department,” Holmes said at the Tribeca premiere. “Doing it all at the same time is a little tiring.”

I REMEMBER BEING SO IMPRESSED THAT SHE HAD MANAGED TO NOT ONLY WRITE A SCREENPLAY DURING THE PANDEMIC BUT GET THE FILM FINANCED AND READY TO GO. GETTING ANY FILM OFF THE GROUND IS A LOGISTIC MIR ACLE BUT DOING IT ALL WITHIN SUCH A SHORT SPACE OF TIME, WAS SOMETHING ELSE. —JIM STURGESS

Sturgess also recognized that getting Alone Together off the ground in such a strange period was a feat in and of itself. “Getting any film off the ground is a logistic miracle,” says Sturgess, who broke out in Julie Taymor’s Across the Universe in 2007 and more recently had a starring role on Apple TV’s Home Before Dark. “I was so impressed that Katie managed to not only write a screenplay during that time but organize herself and get the film financed and ready to go. That was something else.” Holmes, who also directed the family drama All We Had in 2016, already has another film completed, which she wrote, directed and produced, a period drama called Rare Objects, based on the 2016 novel by Kathleen Tessaro. “Katie is truly a great leader,” explains Sturgess. “She believes in the creative community of making a film and the importance of that group’s energy. She definitely heightened that sense of gratitude and positivity.” Also: she knows the secret to a happy set. Says Sturgess, “She was forever buying vast amounts of pizza to keep morale high.” ■

Global hospitality empire Major Food Group (founded by Jeff Zalaznick, Mario Carbone and Rich Torrisi) has expanded its celebrated Carbone to Dallas’ Design District. “Carbone was made for Dallas and its dynamic, worldly community, so it is a thrill to finally share this legendary restaurant with such an extraordinary city—and there’s much more to come,” says Zalaznick. In just 10 years, Major Food Group has pioneered a celebratory style of dining at its portfolio of over 30 restaurants, bars, private clubs and hotels across the globe. While the ambiance and design elements, courtesy of design visionary Ken Fulk, are signature to the success of Carbone, the food is truly a top priority. Carbone Dallas will offer signature dishes like the rigatoni in vodka sauce, veal chop parmesan and Caesar salad prepared tableside, with a few seasonal items mixed in. The opulent, Venetian-inspired space showcases the grandeur of a palazzo layered with a heavy dose of mid-century swagger and unapologetic luxury. One special design element, unique to Dallas, is a highly intimate yet over-the-top lounge accessed through the dining room. “Carbone Dallas was designed to raise the bar for dining out,” says Fulk. “Crafted with an old world elegance, it’s utterly glamorous and filled with big doses of high style. Soon to be the spot to see and be seen, it’s the perfect match for a city that’s known for grand gestures.” carbonedallas.com –NATASHA WOLFF PHOTOGRAPHY BY DOUGLAS FRIEDMAN

The 12-foot custom-built wood-burning hearth—on which 90 percent of the menu is cooked—and chef Manion’s passion for South American grilling techniques serve as inspiration for the menu. Those looking for unique, grilled South American-tinged meats, seasonal vegetables and seafood will be blown away by the new restaurant’s offerings. The oysters are served with smoked onion aioli, bacon and house-spiced chips and make for a delicious flavor combination when served hot off the coals. BEACHES

Squibnocket beach is absolutely beautiful, and I am completely spoiled that it is in my backyard. I love Lucy Vincent Beach as well if you want some people around you. It is also fun to drive your car out on Norton Point; we usually do a sunset BBQ there with friends at least once a summer. ACTIVITIES

If you have kids, you have to take them to the Flying Horses Carousel in Oak Bluffs: it’s the nation’s oldest carousel. Grey Barn and Mermaid Farm are both my favorite farm stands on the island. Nothing beats the cheese from Grey Barn and the lassi from Mermaid Farm. During the week, my daughter attends Art Camp at the Featherstone Center for the Arts and at The Farm

Institute—both places are so great for kids and have amazing programs. On Wednesday and Saturdays, it’s fun to visit the Farmer’s Market. R E S TA U R A N T S

ulia LeClair has been coming to the Vineyard for as long as she can remember. Spending summers up-island in Squibnocket has been a family getaway from the hustle and bustle of New York City, and the entrepreneur is grateful to get away. “Whenever I arrive, I feel like I have escaped from reality,” she explains. “The island is incredibly beautiful in so many ways. I love that each area is different and has its own vibe. Up island is more of a laid-back escape and down island you have great shopping and restaurants. My mother and I used to joke that we have our Chilmark wardrobe and our Edgartown wardrobe and the two are so different.” LeClair brings her two children, Chloe, 4, and Charlie, 2, to spend summers and off-season weekends at the house she grew up in. “All of my favorite memories of my childhood are from this island and I can’t wait to be able to create similar memories for my children.” When she’s not playing golf and tennis, LeClair is happy just chilling at the beach or pool and cooking meals at home. “Everything slows down out here and I have much more time to take in these moments compared to the school year in New York City where we are always on the go.” Here are some of her favorite local spots.

This stunning, contemporary home with a private beach and rooftop pool on Lambert’s Cove in West Tisbury sits on a 3.3-acre parcel of land. It’s listed at $28,500,000. landvest.com

Nell Diamond has been coming to Nantucket since birth and has family who live on the island full time (her grandfather was the principal of Nantucket High School). So when it came time for Hill House Home, her fashion and lifestyle brand, to further its retail expansion, opening a store locally made a lot of sense. “My family moved a lot when I was a child, and Nantucket has really been the most consistent home we’ve had,” she says. The downtown boutique showcases the brand’s whimsical bed and bath linens, robes for adults and kids, hair accessories, swimwear, pajamas and, of course, the brand’s signature Nap Dress. Diamond’s family home is The Rosie near Nantucket town and she and her husband and swimsuit, $125, three kids spend their summers there. “I’m so excited HILL HOUSE HOME, hillhouse for so many of my relatives and friends to see our home.com product in real life,” Diamond says of her Main Street store, which is decorated with the brand’s Trellis print, gingham patterns and blue color palette. “I’m definitely going to be there as much as I can—I love manning the register!” The prints and new silhouettes in the label’s new summer collection were inspired by the Amalfi Coast but designed to be worn everywhere. “One of the reasons I love IRL shopping is because I get customer feedback in real time, and I can’t wait to hear what our customers think,” she says. So far, the Hotel Robes, Swiss Dot Nap Dresses and Sisi silk pillowcases have been fan favorites. hillhousehome.com

“Our goal has always been to embrace and enhance the island’s culture, not to come in and try and change it,” Guidi says. “We work very hard to create experiences that are embraced by not only the newer visitors, but also the residents as well as lifelong travelers to the island.” These experiences include opportunities to showcase island purveyors, like at Sister Ship, which features produce from Fog Town Farm and locally-sourced oysters and scallops. The Nantucket Bake Shop supplies the Portuguese bread served at the hotel’s morning coffee bar. New this summer is Bosun’s Locker, a three-bedroom house that will allow guests the privacy of a home but the convenience and service of staying at the Faraway hotel. “Bosun Locker will be a wonderful addition to the Faraway collection of rooms and suites,” says Guidi. “You simply can’t get a better location for a threebedroom home with incredible outdoor space if you want to be in the heart of the historic district.” farawayhotels.com

“I’ve always loved jewelry and accessorizing, but in the last decade, as the trend towards dainty jewelry became more popular, I found it unaffordable to collect in a way that made any sort of statement,” explains Courtney Leidy of Courtney Leidy Jewelry. “One dainty bracelet that cost thousands didn’t make an impact unless it was stacked with five more dainty bracelets. I was always drawn to more substantial pieces, and it was this gap in the market that fueled my desire to design.” Leidy and her family left New York two years ago for the Sunshine State, but for years prior, she spent time in the Diamond District to learn the art of wax carving and jewelry design. “I spent many years exploring ideas around different collections and sketching and designing miscellaneous pieces for myself,” she says. “During that time, my challenge was finding a way to focus it all.” When friends started asking her to create pieces for them, a hobby turned into a reality. This March, her pieces were featured at an all-female designer exhibition, which was hosted by The Stax and Sotheby’s Palm Beach.

“Having had one month to pull together my debut collection, I started with a small capsule that I am continuing to build upon,” she says. “I launched with Double Flip Pendants, chains and rings, and will soon be launching mini pendants that can be worn on a chain or on an earring hoop, in addition to ear cuffs, bracelets and anklets. “As much as possible, I’m trying to make each piece multi-functional, so a pendant can be worn as both a necklace or an earring, an ear cuff as a pinky ring, a bracelet as an anklet, and so on.” Inspired by the colors, forms and fluidity of post-war abstract expressionism and Japan’s post-war Gutai art movement—like artist Jiro Yoshihara’s iconic “Circle” paintings—the Post Collection features her signature pendants in a variety of rich-colored cabochon gemstones, shapes and sizes. Set in 18k yellow gold, the Double Flip allows you to wear one single pendant on its own or connect several together to create a truly unique statement piece. The Jiro Ring is an organically-shaped ring fabricated in heavy 18k yellow gold. “I like to mix contrasting textures and finishes, which isn’t commonly seen in contemporary jewelry,” she says. “I think that’s what sets my pieces apart. They’re big and bold, and while you can stack them, each is intended to be a statement piece all on its own.” courtneyleidy.com

If there’s a single must-visit design and culinary destination in San Francisco, it’s the newly opened RH San Francisco, The Gallery at the Historic Bethlehem Steel Building. Originally constructed in 1917 by lauded architect Frederick H. Meyer (who designed the Pacific Gas & Electric Building in 1916 and the YMCA Hotel in 1928), and meticulously restored by RH chairman and CEO Gary Friedman, the five-story building houses RH Modern, RH Outdoor, a design firm and atelier, two wine bars with more than 40 wines by the glass and The Palm Court Restaurant. Dinner selections range from a wood-grilled avocado paired with Petrossian caviar and crème fraîche to a whole rotisserie chicken with rosemary and garlic. cream and caramel sauce or a slice of American birthday cake. rh.com The New York City–based jeweler Alexis Bittar returns to his strong brick-and-mortar roots with a new boutique on Fillmore Street. Bittar enlisted the help of his friend, Tony Award–winning scenic designer Scott Pask, to design the boutique. “I started thinking about who I wanted to hire as a designer and loved the idea of going off the typical route of a store designer/architect,” says Bittar. “I wanted to work with someone who understood theater, and I thought, who better to work with than Scott, who has such a tremendous knowledge of designing stage sets. I think retail needed to evolve for a more modern society, but I think customer connectivity and customer experience is important for a brand to define who it is.” Bittar, whose signature jewelry and new handbag collection are on display, wasn’t interested in a store that looked like another white

box boutique. “[The design] gives the sense of being somewhat in a store, somewhat on a set or an art gallery, but giving the perfect experience to look at the jewelry as art,” Bittar explains. alexisbittar.com

HISTORY REPEATING Whether planning a short trip from the Bay Area or a weekend getaway to Yosemite National Park, the newly opened El Capitan Hotel, a JdV by Hyatt hotel, in Merced is the perfect base camp. Located in a former 19th century historic hotel of the same name, the 114-room property boasts two wings and three dining options including Rainbird. Designed by San Francisco design maven Nicole Hollis, the restaurant features a five-course tasting menu artfully prepared by executive chef Quentin Garcia, with selections such as Japanese amberjack with avocado mousse, pine roasted cucumber, spruce tips, mandarin and coriander, and an entire course devoted to artisan bread with cultured sunflower butter, Bellwether Farms ricotta, golden raisin marmite and honeycomb. “The El Capitan Hotel, Rainbird Restaurant and Mainzer theater, bar and restaurant are catalysts for a reimaged downtown in which we honor the history of the area through our warm ambiance and hospitality while introducing guests to a multitude of experiences, including fine dining, reinvigorated historic spaces and beautiful art,” says managing director Robin Donovan. “You will feel and see all the valley has to offer when visiting us and attractions such as Vista Ranch, Lake Yosemite, Merced Playhouse or the Multicultural Art Center.” elcapitanhotel.com

James Beard Award-winning chef Traci Des Jardins (of beloved, now-shuttered Jardinière in San Francisco’s Hayes Valley) has been handcrafting tortillas since a young age. Now, she presents her take on modern Mexican fare along with Chef Robert Hurtado with the opening

of El Alto in Los Altos. Located at State Street, a food emporium and marketplace, the stylish 72-seat eatery features a gold mural by local artist Ben Henderson, leather banquettes, and rope accents. “I loved the vision that Los Altos Community Investments (LACI) had for this project and was really excited for the opportunity to do another project with Bon Appetit Management Company,” says Des Jardins. “My passion for Mexican cuisine really drove the concept. I love the connections we were able to thread between the history of Los Altos and some of the flavors on the menu. I’m especially proud of the Liberty Farms Duck with Apricot Mole. It was inspired by both mine and [Chef Hurtado’s] histories as well as the history of the Los Altos apricot.” elaltolosaltos.com

Instant Gratification 50 years of automatic memories with Polaroid’s SX-70 camera BY EDWARD ESPITIA

from the paper. After that they had to swab it with a protective coating and adhere it to a cardboard holder. The process generated a lot of waste, left hands sticky and was quite tedious while taking pictures on the go. Land continually worked to streamline the Polaroid camera, and after 24 years he unveiled the SX-70 in 1972. The camera’s “Absolute one-step photography” technology was revolutionary. In an Apple-like town hall meeting, Land snapped 5 photos in ten seconds that were all processed within the camera, ejected themselves, and

then, as if by magic, developed before their eyes. The miniature photo lab was encased in a chic chrome and saddle brown leather design that folded up to fit in one’s pocket. Each pack of film contained its own battery, so the camera could be used without fear it would die in the middle of a photo session. The SX-70 was an instant success. This new, hand-held wonder immediately found its way into the hands of photographers and artists. The compact, easily operable device allowed Ansel Adams to beautif ully capture the grandeur of Yosemite even in the 3.108 × 3.024 format. Andy Warhol was rarely seen without his trusty SX-70, which he used to capture some of his most well known photographs, including many of himself. Maripol, the photographer and stylist who is often touted as having discovered Madonna, was a prolific user of the SX-70, capturing many wellknown images of Madonna, Grace Jones and Debbie Harry. Her photos inf luenced Taylor Swift’s album cover for “1989”. With the advent of one-hour photo development at drug stores and digital cameras, the Polaroid fell out of favor until recently. Refurbished SX-70s have become a coveted find, and photographers with an eye for nostalgia are buying digital versions of the instant camera. Just remember, never shake a Polaroid picture.

he ability to capture instantaneous images with ease has become integral to our daily lives. Most of us have a camera on our person at all times, and many of us cannot remember a time when pictures were not instantly viewable on a digital device. In 1943, a young girl asked her father, the inventor Edwin H. Land, why they could not see the pictures they took on vacation instantly. Land pondered her question and got to work in his lab for 5 years. His solution—the first Polaroid instant camera, which allowed any user to snap a picture and then remove a print that developed in about one minute. The original Polaroid camera was revolutionary, but it wasn’t as instant or user-friendly as it could be. Using the camera took some time to learn: there was a trial and error process that involved manually pulling out the layers of paper, developing chemicals and film from the camera. The user also had to time the development themselves and then peel the photo
