20222023 ACADEMIC YEAR IN REVIEW

20222023 W ELCOME TO OUR 2022- 2023 AC AD EMIC YE AR IN R E VIE W, FE AT URIN G A VARIE T Y OF OUR S CHOOL’S H IGHLIGHT S FROM THE PAST YE AR Reflecting on the last twelve months, I would like to start by applauding our graduating students and residents from the Class of 2023. They began their experience at the Dugoni School during a time when COVID-19 was impacting the school and our entire world. By the end of their time with us, it was amazing to see them enjoy many of the same opportunities to build relationships and participate in events and programs as other classes in years past. The class of 2023 was a close-knit group that forged strong interpersonal connections, excelled at clinical care and represented our school’s highest values. The entire Dugoni School family enjoyed establishing our new routines and activities following the disruptions of the pandemic. We enjoyed student and alumni events, and created new opportunities across patient care, community service, academics, research, student life, philanthropy and more. Thank you to everyone involved in making 2022-2023 a year of growth and renewal at the Dugoni School! Sincerely,

Nader A. Nadershahi, DDS, MBA, EdD Dean and Vice Provost University of the Pacific, Arthur A. Dugoni School of Dentistry

CO NNE C T IN G W I T H OUR COMMUNI T IE S From low-income children to older adults from all walks of life, Dugoni School volunteers touched the lives of thousands of people through outreach at community sites or at special events held on campus. The volunteers helped improved the lives of local and international families, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, veterans, homeless individuals and others. More than 10 events were organized by the Student Community Outreach for Public Education (SCOPE) program, a student-run volunteer community service organization at the dental school. Other school organizations and departments also pitched in to help serve the community throughout the year.

PACIFIC HEALTH CARE COLLABORATIVE Construction moved forward on a unique clinical facility in Sacramento that will combine dental and medical services for the public in a teaching and learning environment—the first of its kind at a university! The clinic will be housed in a 30,000-square-foot building on Pacific’s Sacramento campus. The collaboration is led by the Dugoni School and includes the School of Health Sciences and Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy. Services will be provided by students training to become dentists, physician assistants, nurses, pharmacists, occupational therapists, registered dietitian nutritionists, social workers and other health care providers. This interprofessional approach creates an environment that puts the patient at the center to improve outcomes, lower costs and provide a better experience for patients and providers. OKU-SUTRO EXCELLENCE DAY SPOTLIGHTS 80+ PROJECTS Examples of excellence in clinical cases, research and community service at the Dugoni School were on full display during the OKU-Sutro Excellence Day celebration in May. This longstanding tradition offers the school community the opportunity to publicly share their projects with colleagues, faculty, staff, alumni and special guests. Faculty judges reviewed more than 80 projects on display!

DEAN NADERSHAHI STEPS UP AT ADEA Dean Nadershahi provided significant leadership and service to the profession by serving as national chair of the board of the American Dental Education Association in 2022-2023. His duties included leading the program for the 2023 ADEA Annual Session and Exhibition held in Portland, Ore. with the theme “Believe I’m Possible” and chairing the “New Thinking for the New Century: Preparing for the Next 100 Years” committee to explore the future of dental education.

ORAL SURGERY SURGICENTER TO EXPAND CARE

The Dugoni School was awarded $

350,000

by the Herbst Foundation to build a new ambulatory surgery center in San Francisco with the goal of increasing access to oral health care for low-income and historically underserved populations. The OMS SurgiCenter will reach a number of patient populations including children, older adults and people with intellectual and developmental disabilities who require deep sedation and general anesthesia to facilitate their dental/surgical care.

EXPLORING AI IN DENTAL EDUCATION Faculty members Dr. Mustafa Radif and Dr. Meixun Sinky Zheng held faculty training on “Navigating the Intersection of Generative AI and Dental Education: Opportunities, Challenges and Perspectives” at the Dugoni School’s Faculty Development Day and at an ADEA national eLearn webinar. Faculty members Dr. Jonas Bianchi and Dr. Andrew Young edited the June 2023 issue of the Journal of the California Dental Association, which focused on artificial intelligence applications in dentistry. SYMPOSIUM EXPLORES HOW TO REDUCE INEQUITIES IN ORAL HEALTH CARE Health practitioners, educators and leaders from across the country visited the Dugoni School for the “Dentistry as Participant and Casualty of Racism and Bias in Medicine: Moving Toward Equity in Oral Health Care” symposium hosted in January by the Pacific Center for Equity in Oral Health Care. The gathering was among the first events of its kind in dental education to explore the structural disparities in oral health care through the intersection of racism, ageism, ableism, sexism/gender bias and other inequities. DENTAL CAMP: HIGH SCHOOLERS EXPLORE A CAREER IN DENTISTRY Forty high school students from across the U.S. participated in a unique “Dental Camp” program as part of the Pacific Summer High School Institute held in late June and early July. The majority of the program was held on the Stockton Campus, with three days held on site at the Dugoni School in San Francisco. Attendees had an opportunity to explore many topics related to dentistry, learn hands-on skills, meet with faculty and students and participate in workshops about the materials, procedures and specialties in dentistry.
