Graduation Regalia The academic regalia worn for ceremonial purposes, such as you will see in the University of South Alabama’s commencement exercises, represents a tradition that can be traced back to its origins in the European universities and ecclesiastical practices of the Middle Ages. As early as 1321, the wearing of certain costumes by specified degree holders was quite strictly defined in the university regulations, since the costumes served to identify the status of the wearer and his role in the academic life of society. In addition to signaling differences of rank, the garments as first devised also had functional purposes. The long gown provided necessary warmth in the drafty, sparsely heated buildings of the times and the hood provided protection for the tonsured head of medieval scholars. As you might expect, even though these functional attributes resulted in some similarities, each university was free to design its own regalia, and thus a great variety of academic dress developed from this European tradition. While the European academic scene continues to display an amazing diversity of costume from one institution to another and from one country to another, American universities perceived, about a century ago, that some degree of uniformity governing the wearing of academic regalia was desirable. Accordingly, a special convention of representatives from most of the colleges then in existence was held at Columbia University in May 1895. And, although some modifications have since been made, the costumes seen here today represent essentially the results of that convention. In American practice, the regalia still serves to differentiate among the three degree levels used by our universities — the bachelor’s. master’s, and doctorate’s degrees. Common to all three levels, however, ise the head wear, usually the familiar square, black mortarboard, although soft, velvet tams might sometimes be worn by those holding doctorates. Gold tassels in place of the usually black ones are also an option for that rank. Also common to the three ranks is the color of the gown, which is black, although here again some special variation is permitted; those holding doctoral degrees from Harvard may wear crimson gowns, and those similarly credentialed by Yale may wear blue. The gowns appropriate to the three ranks differ principally in the shape of the sleeves and in the special trim found on the doctor’s gown. The bachelor’s gown, which is unadorned, has wide sleeves pointed at the bottom. The

master’s gown, also plain, has a curiously designed sleeve that is elongated at the rear and reaches downward nearly to the gown’s bottom hem. The doctor’s gown has nellshaped sleeves and is distinctly trimmed with velvet facings down the front and three velvet bars on each sleeve. These trimmings may be either black or the color appropriate to the discipline. It is the hoods, however, worn by those holding master’s and doctor’s degrees that provide color of the academic procession. These garments, which now have only ceremonial significance, are worn fastened at the front of the collar and draped over the shoulders and back of the wearer to as to display the linings, which present the colors of the university awarding the degree. Thus those holding degrees for from the University of South Alabama wear hoods line with chevrons of red, white, and blue — the university’s colors. The hoods also have a velvet binding, three inches wide for the master’s degree and five inches for the doctorate, in a color designating the discipline in which the degree was earned according to the following scheme: Arts and Letters Business Economics Education Engineering Fine Arts Medicine Music Nursing Philosophy Physical Education Public Administration Science

It is, of course, impossible to list all of the individual university colors to be seen in the hood linings of a faculty as large and diverse as the one at the university, but some may be similar. Gold honor cords can be worn to designate academic honors. Finally, we might point out it is traditional at our commencement for the candidates for degrees to wear the tassel of the mortarboard at the right front while they are still in candidate status and for them to switch the tassel over to the left once the degree has been conferred.

Letter from the Editor Dear graduates, families and friends, The University of South Alabama is notorious for showcasing its rich history and culture. College campuses are so diverse in terms of majors, backgrounds, languages spoken, religion and other factors. Because of this rich diversity, USA proudly uses the phrase “We Are South” as a rallying call for all to yell. My goal for this publication is to share the stories that people don’t normally hear. While we all know that the football team took back the Sunbelt, most of us don’t know what it is like to be the child of a transgender parent, what goes on in the daily life of President Tony Waldrop and how to survive freshman year. I wanted to include these stories because this is what makes USA the college it is. We are a diverse group of people with bounties of different things to offer. I have only been at USA for two years, but I have seen more diversity here than anywhere else. Arguably, we learn just as much from each other as we learn from our classes. That is the college experience, and that is what I wanted to capture in this publication. Graduates, I hope you have enjoyed your time at USA and learned a thing or two to take with you into the world. Take what you have learned here and make the college and community proud, because you are South. You are what makes the college what it is, and you set a precident for the students following you. Families and friends, celebrate this as a time of growing and moving on to the next step in life. Encourage your graduate to follow their passions no matter how far it may take them. ASHTON ALLEN
Ashton says she has three great accomplishments in her life. One is her relationship with God. The second is her wonderful son. The third will be graduating with her Bachelor’s in communication. She is nota conventional college student, as she decided to take a break from school in 2014, had a child and was told that she would never complete her degree. On a whim, she applied for financial aid, received it and returned to South to finsih her degree. “While the struggle was long, the rewards of bettering my future and my son’s will be worth every moment. I cannot express my gratitude enough to God, my mother, my step-dad, my family, my friends, the faculty/staff at the Department of Communication and to my son who gave me the motivation to step forward,” said Ashton.
RACHEL CHAMBERLAIN
Rachel is an accomplished biology major who is starting her dream job as a marine mammal trainer at Dolphin Quest in Hawaii. She is graduating Cum Laude and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Currently, Rachel volunteers as a lab assistant for the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and for the Alabama Marine Mammal Stranding Network. These experiences led her to her internship in the spring of 2017 with the U.S. Navy Marine Mammal Program, where she assisted with the daily care and military operations training of bottlenose dolphins and California sea lions. During her time at South, Rachel has served on the executive board and on the philanthropy committee for Kappa Delta sorority. The student body elected her as homecoming junior maid in 2016 and the Homecoming Queen in 2017.
ARIELLE CAMPBELL
Arielle has conquered every obstacle and beat the odds to earn her B.S. in Speech & Hearing Sciences. Arielle has managed a full-time course load ever since beginning here at South, taking 15+ hours a semester. While this may seem mundane to some, Arielle has managed a full course load while working a full-time 40 hour-a-week job for a home health agency in Pensacola all and raised her 6 year old son while completing her degree. While at South, she was also a member of NSSLHA, USA Dance Marathon and multiple Honor societies.
MEGHAN DEAN
Meghan is graduating with two bachelor’s degrees with a 4.0 GPA, but that is not all that is impressive about her. Meghan also dedicates great portion of her time to biomedical research and to a variety of volunteer work, such as GEMS (Girls Excelling in Math and Science), hurricane relief efforts, coastal clean-up and peer tutoring. She is described as “meticulous and organized” in her work. During her undergraduate career, Meghan has already achieved recognition on the President’s Scholar List and received various student awards and scholarships. “Her innate curiosity and eagerness to learn coupled with her aptitude in the classroom as well as the laboratory have given her an excellent foundation with which to pursue a career in any field she might choose.”
BRENT CARR
Brent is a geology major who has made significant impacts to South and the local community. In the Phi Kappa Sigma fraternity, he held multiple positions including the Scholarship Chair and IFC Representative. Within the InterFraternity Council, Brent was elected as the VP Judicial Chair. Outside of Greek Life, Brent was the President of the GeoClub. As a Junior Intern, Brent provided crucial aid to those living within informal settlements in Cape Town, South Africa, while intervening with the nonprofit Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading. Brent will soon be presenting on behalf of the City of Mobile at the ESRI Southeastern Regional Conference.
ZADORA EDWARDS
Zadora’s story is one of perserverance, as she worked for years to continue her education.During her senior year, she became pregnant with twins. Even when placed on partial bedrest, she still walked to class while seven months pregnant. She ended up having to leave college when the spring 2014 semester ended. One month later, she had her twins. In the past three years, she has grown to be a loving and devoted mother but she never lost sight of her education. She tried again and again and finally made it back to school. Through working two or three jobs at a time just to make ends meet, she maintained her grades and is now graduating. She is excited to be able to show her daughters that she has earned her college degree.

RACHEL GOODMAN
Rachel is graduating with a 4.0 GPA and will be attending the University of Alabama’s law school next year. She has been a member of Kappa Delta Sorority since her freshmen year. She served as Risk Management Officer, Song Leader and House Chair. The sorority worked with Penelope House and the local Girl Scouts troop. She also worked as a jag pal helping students with English and Biology on top of having completed over 300 hours of community service. She is a member of NSCS and Order of Omega. She is also the Opinion Editor for the Vanguard and started an advice column there called “Dear Debbie.” She hopes to use her law degree to represent low income people and women who have been the victim of domestic violence.
ELLIE HARWELL
Ellie has been awarded acceptance into the Golden Key Honor Society and the Omicron Delta Kappa Honor Society as well as the Whiddon Honors Research Scholarship for the Honors College. She regularly participated in community service through the Honors College for Ghouls for Good and the Dance Marathon, and through the Pre-PT club for Buddy Ball and Dance without Limits for kids with autism. She has completed over 30 service hours through research dealing with autistic kids and horse therapy. Her plans are to attend either William Carey University for PT or Life University for chiropractors. Being a member of the honors college presented Ellie with the pressure to succeed, but she has successfully defended her thesis and is on her way to a successful future.

RIO HARDY
Rio has worked hard over the last 4 years in academics and athletics. She has been an “influential, outstanding and pivotal” part of the soccer team. She has won 4 conference titles, 4 regular season conference titles, Sun Belt player of the year, all conference first team x3, all tournament teams x2, broken a few school records for the most game winning goals and is 2nd in school history for most career goals and career points. She has done all of this while living and studying away from her home, Workington, England. She also volunteers regularly with the soccer team to donate items to Penelope House, visits children at USA Children’s and Women’s hospital, teaches soccer to children and cleans up the city while participating in trash walks.
ROLINDA HOLT
Rolinda is an accounting major who has maintained a 4.0 throughout her college career. She is a full time student and active in many organizations including honor societies Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, National Pan-Hellenic Council and Women of Excellence. She holds office in two of these organizations, as well. Along with being a full time student and being active in organizations, Rolinda also worked two jobs in order to maintain a living wage. She has worked hard to get where she is, and she is an inspiration to many of her friends.
STEFFI HARDY
Steffi is originally from Workington, England and came to America for the first time in 2014 to begin her studies and play for the South Alabama soccer team. She has since became a vital member of the squad, leading the defensive line to 4 regular season championships, 4 Sun Belt tournament titles and 4 NCAA appearances as a starter in all 4 seasons. Along the way, she has won numerous individual awards, including the 2015 Defensive Player of The Year and multiple first team all-conference awards and an alltournament team award. She is a leader on and off the field for the team and a person who many people look up to. She has put n hard work for four years mall while being in a different country from her family.
SAVANNAH HOYT
Some of Savannah’s accomplishments include her work within the Honors College. She served as both the President and Social Chair of its student organization. She also served as Senate Clerk for SGA. Both of these have been so rewarding to her and helped develop some of her professional skills. She has worked for the chemistry department as a stockroom assistant and as an undergraduate researcher. She also served as the scholarship chair for Mortar Board Senior Honors Society. Her greatest achievement has been her work with V-Day. V-Day is an international movement to end violence against women and girls. AThis year, I was the primary organizer, and we raised over $800 for the Mobile Rape Crisis Center and V-Day international.

Ashley is a biomedical sciences major in the honors college who has continually excelled in her academics, extracurricular activities and community service. As an honors student, she is dedicated to the research done in the psychology department. She has been extremely involved on and off campus, serving first as the Vice President and now President of the Pre-Physician Assistant Society on campus. Ashley has also been active in Alpha Epsilon Delta and the Biomedical Sciences Society. Off campus, she volunteers at Thomas Hospital as a Patient Care Advocate and at South Baldwin Hospital as an Emergency Room volunteer. She will enter USA’s Physician Assistant Program a week after graduating.
BRADFORD MURRY
Bradford has achieved tremendously in college and is set to continue excelling after his graduation. Bradford will graduate Magna Cum Laude with a computer engineering degree and mathematics minor. He is a former USA football student athlete and has participated in numerous organizations. He is the Parliamentarian for the National Society of Black Engineers and is a member of the most prestigious engineering society, Tau Beta Pi. Prior to graduation, he had received four job offers, and ultimately decided to accept an offer from the Souther Company as a Protection and Control Engineer. In addition to his many accomplishments, Bradford has always tried to help other students whenever possible, including tutoring fellow students in Calculus, Physics, and engineering courses.
SARAH LARSEN
Sarah has excelled during her time at the University of South Alabama academically, socially and through her community involvement. She has been an active member in Kappa Delta sorority for four years, along with holding leadership positions such as Social Chair, Sisterhood Chair and serving on the Shamrock Committee. Through Kappa Delta, Sarah has volunteered over 100 hours with the Girls Scouts, Penelope House and fundraising for Prevent Child Abuse America. Her biggest accomplishment is having been the 2017-2018 President of the University of South Alabama Dance Marathon. Sarah also volunteers with Habitat for Humanity and Mobile Animal Shelter. Sarah is truly dedicated to the university and community.

Kenny has shown great leadership and merit in his time at USA. He has been President of Student Nurses’ Associatoin, an SGA Senator for the College of Nursing, Vice President of Phi Kappa Sigma, Treasurer of Order of Omega Honor Society and the 2017 Homecoming King. Kenny’s leadership has allowed him to be chosen to receive the Leadership Award at the Nursing Convocation. The future is bright for Kenny as he has accepted a position as a Registered Nurse with the Mobile Infirmary and has aspirations to come back to USA for graduate school to one day be a professor.
DAIJAH MERKERSON
Daijah has made an impact on campus with her involvement in college activities. She is a member of the Hospitality and Tourism Department, Hospitality and Tourism Club, Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, American Business Women’s Association and Students Today Alumni Tomorrow. Her impact has extended to the community, as well. She mentors a high school senior, serves every other week in the kitchen at Praise Family Church and interns for Visit Mobile. She is described as “warm, welcoming and delightful.” Daijah works tirelessly to help the Mobile community and the university to receive the recognition they both deserve.

In her short time at South, Cydnie has completed more than she ever imagined she could in school. She says she is usually the type to keep her head down and focus on her studies, but says that was close to impossible here at South. Since being here, she was given the opportunity to be a webmaster for three departments, and now she has developed a love for web layout. She also started working at her department as a student worker, which lead to her being able to complete a thesis with the chair of her department, Dr. James Aucoin. She joined AAF and was able to explore the world of adverting more in depth and was inducted into Lamda Phi Eta.

Wei Ming as been an inspiration to many for his ability to overcome his disability. He amazes his friends every day with his lightheartedness and friendliness. Wei Ming was blinded as a child, but he doesn’t let that stop him from attending college and earning his degree. He also plays in piano competitions and offers his skill to his church and to those who wish to learn. He deserves recognition for his ability to overcome obstacles and make the most out of every situation. He inspires all who meet him.

CAITLYN PENTER
Caitlyn is a lively person with contagious friendliness. She wakes up early every day to run her morning radio show with The Prowl. She has been involved in many different organizations including Kappa Delta Sorotity, First Year Council and Mortar Board, which she got tapped into during her freshman year of college. She is constantly studying for her classes and has maintained a 4.0 her entire college career. Her professors and colleagues respect her work ethic. She is graduating college a year early with dual degrees in communication and political science. She has already received multiple job offers before graduating. She exemplifies what it means to be a Jag.

Brook has accomplished many things during her time here. She is an active member of the History Club, Alpha Omicron Pi Sorority and the RHA. Brook has served as the History Club’s treasurer, Assistant Treasurer for AOII her freshman and sophomore years before running for Assistant of Treasurer the following year. Her junior and senior years, Brook served as Alpha Omicron Pi’s Chapter President. She was also selected as the History Department’s senior of the year. Brook has also accepted the prestigious position of Educational Leadership Consultant after graduation, where she will be traveling on behalf of AOII International Headquarters to visit and assist collegiate chapters for a year.

Becky is an international studies major and diplomacy and military science minor. She organized USA’s first International Education Week dinner with a special guest speaker, created a lending closet for the International exchange students at south and was one of two students selected from USA to attend Diversity Abroad’s Global Student Leadership Summit. She interned in China where she taught English to Chinese kindergarten students. She was awarded second place for the global student leader award and was commissioned as an active duty army officer the day before graduation. While remaining active in school and the community, she is a caregiver for a 19 year old with autism.
TREVOR RAYL
During his time at the University of South Alabama,Trevor has achieved highly in academics. He worked with Dr. Yazdani in his lab working with the bioreactors, which he helped design and with Dr. Jeffrey Todd McDonald, who is using electroencephalogram data to predict seizures. During this research, he showed extreme initiative seen by making interdisciplinary connections with the Neurology Department at USA Medical Center to further his understanding of the EEG data. He acted as the instrumentation chair for Float-Dive-Swim. He recently passed the Mechanical Fundamentals of Engineering examination, paving his way to becoming a professional licensed engineer. “He has a heart of gold and is supportive of his friends and family in any way he can.”
WILLIAM RIDDICK
William has been active throughout campus with many organizations and with his personal hobby of photography. He as been President of his fraternity Alpha Phi Alpha, Music Chair for Jaguar Productions Membership Chair for Collegiate 100, an Orientation Leader, a member of Abeneefoo Kuo Honor Society, a member of the African American Student Association and Music Director and Assistant Program Director of The Prowl radio station. He aided in the station’s transition to an FM station. He was awarded Greek Man of the Yera for the Nationaol Pan-Hellenic Council. William’s creativity will always serve as an inspiration to others.

Myrah is an inspiration to others because of her work ethic and drive. She is a speech and hearing sciences major and spanish minor. Myrah was a South Alabama Prowler for her full four years at South. She was a USA Homecoming Senior Maid, a member of the African American Student Association, President of Iota Nu City Wide Chapter of Delta Sigma sorority, a member of Phi Sigma Iota Foreign Language Honor Society, National Society If Collegiate Scholars and Order Of Omega and Abeneefoo Kuo Honor Society. She was also a member of the National Speech and Hearing Association and Women of Excellence. A rewarding experience for Myrah was being a peer mentor at the English language learning center at South Alabama.

Trey is a psychology major and communications minor. He is described as having “more school spirit in his thumb” than most people have overall. He currently works for the Recruitment Communication Center and is looking to obtain a job as the Associate Director of the Recruitment Communication Center upon graduation. He is on the board for AASA, was a member of First Year Council his freshman year and served as a senator for SGA his sophomore year. Trey works with kids who have learning disabilities for his practicum in psychology. He is also looking to further his education by applying for the Master of Communication program here at South Alabama.

Upon arriving at South, Carl immediately got involved on campus. homas has served as an Orientation Leader, Jag Guide, SGA Senator, Vice-President of Collegiate 100, President of the African-American Student Association, a USA Southerner a member of the Sally Steadman Azalea Chapter of Mortar Board Honor Society and 52nd President of the Student Government Association.He also dedicated his time to academics, receiving the 2015 Distinguished Academic Award from the Mitchell College of Business and consecutive President’s List and Dean’s List Honors. Throughout his academic career, Carl devoted his energy to serving the university and community in numerous capacities. He plans to continue his 2014 citywide clothing drive, The Great Jean Drive, and speaking to Youth groups across the state.

Rachel is a speech and hearing sciences major and a member of the honors college. Rachel served as Treasurer and President of the Honors College Assocatiation. Through her work in honors, she founded USA’s Dance Marathon, which has raised a combined $36,000 for USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital in the two years that she has led it as Founder/Vice President. While having leadership positions in these two organizations, she is also an avid member of NSSLHA, ASLA, Mortar Board and Phi Kappa Phi Honors Society. Rachel has completed two research projects in the department of Speech Pathology & Audiology. Her hard work and dedication has paid off as she will be pursuing her Masters in speech-language pathology here at South.

Christy is a nursing major and has worked hard to get to where she is now. She took a full course load and participated in study groups and other extracurricular activities while planning her wedding and moving to Mobile. She is described as extremely compasssionate and willing to drop everything in order to help someone else out. Her willingness to help others is what puts her in a great position as a nurse. Christy has worked hard to achieve all that she has and leaves a lasting impression on friends and family members. She is a dedicated student, a hard worker, a great friend to many, an amazing sister, and will surely be a truly exemplary nurse.

BEING THE CHILD of a

F
rom an early age, I knew that my parents were keeping a secret from me. Even though I was too young to understand the full context of their words, I understood the tense conversations that stopped as soon as I toddled into a room. I certainly understood the loud voices that came later, hurling abuse at each other, even if I didn’t quite grasp the meaning of the words. The exact words are blessedly lost to the fog of time. When I was three years old, my parents informed me that while they both loved me very much, they no longer loved each other. As such, they were getting a divorce. The news upset me for reasons even I couldn’t name or comprehend. Toddlers have notoriously short memory spans, however. They wake up, they live lives segmented by little rituals: meal time, snack time, nap time, story time, television time. Bedtime was the reset button that erased most of the previous day’s memories away. I was

no different in this regard. My father faded from my life and I barely noticed. Every once in a while – days, weeks or months, I’ll never know – my father would pop back into my life and whisk me off for a magical time. The visits grew further and further apart. Eventually, my visitation settled into an rotation of two to three days approximately every six months. My mother made it clear that she had full custody of me and that these visits were at her pleasure. I didn’t think to ask why she had full custody of me, or what the options to full custody were. Around the age of seven or eight, I began to ask about my father sometimes. I don’t remember the questions or the answers, but I remember getting the sense that I wasn’t being told the full truth. Unsatisfied with the answers, I grimly resolved to gather information by any means necessary. At my mother’s family get-togethers, they would eventually send me, the only child in the family, to bed or out to play
so they could have adult conversation. I became adept at creeping into the hallway to sit at the top of the stairs and listening to the conversation going on downstairs. Their conversations filtered up the wooden stairs like an echo chamber. Over time, I learned which spots in the floor creaked. I learned to sit perfectly still and take tiny, even, shallow breaths, because the stairwell echo chamber worked both ways. My persistence paid off, and finally I began to hear snippets of conversation directly relevant to my interests. I overheard a conversation about the time my father got drunk and passed out in the bathtub wearing a face full of my mother’s makeup. Another time, I overheard a conversation about the time my father got drunk and passed out wearing my mother’s clothes. The news didn’t really surprise me. Substance abuse issues ran in my mother’s family, so even as a small child, I understood that being drunk made adults do stupid things. Besides, I

was raised on late 80’s feminism. “You’re a girl and you can do anything a boy can do and do it better,” my mother told me determinedly one day. It had never crossed my mind that wasn’t the case, but I accepted this universal truth for no other reason than the fact that my mother imparted it to me. But, if girls could do anything boys could do, didn’t that mean that boys could do anything a girl could do? Clearly, that meant that boys could also wear dresses and makeup. It’s not like wearing makeup or dresses hurt anyone. I began to fish for information from family members on both sides of the family by dropping hints about things I overheard. At first, no one would confirm or deny the rumors. I asked deliberately incendiary questions designed to provoke a reaction or to try to trick them into giving me more information. But, I was a child and the adults were able to deftly sidestep my ploys. Through the course of my childhood, several events which seemed unrelated to me at the time occurred. My mother, on the other hand, surely must have correlated these events and jumped to some conclusions which likely terrified her. First, after my first day of kinder-

garten, I refused to wear dresses ever again. Initially, this was because I slid down the playground’s metal slide on a hot summer’s day. I was traumatized by the feel of the scorching metal on my tender back side. My mother refused to accept my new style and coerced me into wearing dresses on a few memorable occasions. I double-downed on my refusal to wear dresses, but she

Second, at some point in the second or third grade, I decided that I was tired of wearing pink. One day, I looked at every stitch of clothing I had and couldn’t find anything that didn’t have pink on it somewhere. My room was pink. Nearly every accessory I had was pink. I craved variety and begged my mother to stop buying me pink things.
She continued to buy me pink items until I asked my beloved stepfather to intercede on my behalf. My mother compromised by buying fewer pink clothes. I felt ignored. Third, in the mid 90’s, when the Atlanta Braves were routinely making it to playoffs and the World Series, I became enchanted with baseball. I watched every game. David Justice, John Smoltz, Tom Glavine and Chipper Jones were my heroes. I repeatedly begged my mother to let me put a Braves poster in my room. “You’re a girl, Shannon!” my mother yelled at me in frustration during one fight. “Be a girl!” I stared at her in bewilderment and broke down into tears. If girls and boys could all do the same things, why was it a problem if I loved the Braves? Several months later, for Christmas, my mother hung a framed poster featuring my heroes in my room. I still remember her tentative, nervous smile. It didn’t make sense to me, but I didn’t care. I won one battle. At the time, I never understood why any of these things were a big deal. As I grew up, I continued to make many choices that could be interpreted as gender-nonconforming to people who put stock in such things. I took jobs in male-dominated career fields;
the military, emergency medicine, forklift operator and truck driver. I also continued to hear whispered allegations regarding my father’s fashion choices. My relationship with my father was never great, his absenteeism being only one reason. I was very angry for a long time about my father not being around. My father eventually remarried, had my halfsister, then divorced. My half-sister was the only reason I stayed in touch with my father. During one visit, shortly after my father and stepmother divorced, my father came out to me as transgender over beers one night. I took the news with aplomb. It wasn’t a shock to me. In a lot of ways, I felt like I had been waiting my entire life to hear this news. I felt vindicated. The truth was finally in the open. I peppered my father with questions. Was he transsexual? No, my father preferred the term transperson. Did my father have a name for his female identity? Yes. Did this make my dad gay? No, my father insisted, he still liked women. Many years later, my father revised that statement, deciding to identify as gay. How did my dad know he was a she? “My first memory is of having my hair cut and it just felt wrong,” my father said to me.
My father had two questions for me. First, she asked me whether or not I was okay with her trans-ness. I was. The second question my dad asked me was if I too, was struggling with my gender identity. “I thought about it once or twice, but no,” I said. “Oh,” my dad said. “You always kind of seemed butch.” I shrugged and we ended the conversation on that note. After the visit ended, my father emailed me with a few book recommendations about coming to terms with having a transgender parent. I never read a single one. I didn’t need to. The great question from my childhood – what was everyone hiding from me – was finally answered. I came to terms with having a transgender parent a solid decade before anyone ever told me I had one. Many times through the years, my dad continued to ask me if I was ok with her being transgender. I tried to reassure my father every way I could imagine. Finally, one day, I gave up in exasperation. “Do you want me to not be ok with it?” I demanded. “I don’t know what you want from me. I can be not ok with it if that’s what you want.” My father lapsed into silence and
never asked that question again. I was ok with my father’s transness because on some level, I always knew it. This was compounded by the fact that I rarely saw my father as a child and we didn’t have much of a relationship. Since I never got to know my father while she was living as a man, I never mourned the passing of my father’s male identity. However, I can’t help but wonder what toll my father’s trans-ness took on my relationship with my mother. As I look back, I recall all of the fights about the color pink, dresses and my interests and question whether or not my relationship with my mother would have been less tumultuous if she weren’t constantly trying to force me into a gender identity I neither wanted nor needed. She lacked the vocabulary to talk to me about transgender issues. Surely, she feared that being transgender was a genetic issue. I suppose all she could do was stand by and try to berate me into making different decisions. For this and many other reasons, I was estranged from my mother when she died, so I will never know. I will always wonder.

t the end of last semester, The Vanguard sent our intrepid reporter, Richard Narramore, to shadow University of South Alabama President Dr. Tony Waldrop. Below, he chronicles a day in the life of USA’s fearless leader. The day started early for President Tony Waldrop. A brief look at his schedule revealed a busy day full of meetings with campus big names like Dean of Students Michael Mitchell and David Johnson, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs. Waldrop and his staff commented in a humorous tone that his schedule was not as busy as normal. Waldrop then led me back to his office where the first meeting of the day was held. I surveyed the room quickly. Centered in the room was a large office desk and behind it were various trophies, diplomas, and family pictures, the normal things expected to be on a office desk. Off to the side was a picture of a USA student and Waldrop himself. The student was De’Siona Grider and the photo was taken at Higher Ed Day in 2017. Waldrop said he was so impressed with Grider’s response when he asked her why higher education was important that he wanted to take his picture with her and hung it in his office. Waldrop touched on this again later, noting that higher education is something he and his wife, Dr. Julee Waldrop, value deeply.
A luncheon was scheduled after the first two scheduled meetings of the day. Waldrop, along with many other leading faculty members from the university met their mentee for the first time. Waldrop participated in a program where he mentored an SGA member. It was fitting that Waldrop be paired with SGA president Carl Thomas. This allowed Thomas the opportunity to relate to someone who knew the weight of being leader and Waldrop to share his experience. Waldrop returned to his office for a short break after the plates were cleared the table and every hand was shook. This break consisted of business calls and answering emails. During this downtime, I caught a glimpse of Waldrop’s weekly scheduler. The spreadsheet was splashed in blue and pink. I asked what the colors stood for and Waldrop responded that the blue was his and the pink was his wife’s. He said that he and Julee share a calendar to keep life sane. Waldrop showed no sign of fatigue as he went from meeting to meeting, just as present and involved as he was before the day started. After the work day ended, I reconvened with Waldrop later that night as he and Julee opened their home to student leaders around campus for dinner. Waldrop said he liked to have small groups of students to keep the evening and discussion open and intimate.
The Waldrop’s home also provided a non-professional setting which made students feel much more at ease. Their home was well decorated and nicely furnished. There were more than enough seats in the living room to accommodate all the guests. A fireplace sat in the center of the room, providing a cozy, this-is-home atmosphere. The staple piece of the house was a bust of a former United States president. Per usual for any university event, Amarak provided the food. Sprawled out on the Waldrop’s counter was a variety of Mexican dishes. The tortilla bowls became a crowd favorite with most choosing to fill it with the other selection on the table. When we found out we would be eating in the living room, a sense of trepidation hovered in the air. Nobody wanted to be the student who got a taco meat stain on the couch. Soon, everyone managed to get through the main entree, with only one or two dropped food incidents. After dinner, Waldrop welcomed open discussion about free speech on campus. As we students sat gathered in circle, we shared experiences, personal beliefs and ideas. As discussions drew to a close, Waldrop and his wife walked everyone outside and bid them farewell. The Waldrops then retired to their home and prepared for another day, full of meetings and furthering higher education.

magine you are given the opportunity to do anything to benefit the University of South Alabama. You may choose to host a movie night to boost morale, a clothing drive for the less fortunate or a day of tailgating with USA football. In 2016, honors college students Rachel Short and Frances Clarke were given this exact opportunity for their honors 201 sophomore project. What they did was beyond what any student had done in the past. Instead of creating an event to benefit just the honors college, they wanted to make it bigger in order to help the community, as well. While visiting friends at Auburn University, they learned about the nationwide movement called the Children’s Miracle Network Dance Marathon. It is a movement created in 1991 with the purpose of raising money for CMN hospitals all around the country. Participants raise money and dance for eight to 36 hours straight in support of the hospitalized children who can’t do it themselves. Short and Clarke found this to be the perfect opportunity to raise awareness and money for a good cause. Conveniently, the local CMN hospital is USA Children’s and Women’s. “We wanted to do something to bring together the campus and the community, and USA Children’s and Women’s does exactly that. The hospital worked as a catalyst to bring everyone together,” said Short. They worked for an entire year to put together the marathon. In its inaugural year in 2017, USA dance marathon raised over $15,911 for the hospital, $911 more than their initial goal. When most people think of hospital expenses, they think of the large machinery and surgical equipment. Most of the money the dance marathon raises, however, goes toward the small things, like pre-
mature pacifiers, wagons with IV poles, Star Wars hospital gowns, masks, hand sanitizer and diapers. Short said they chose the initial $15,000 goal after they toured the hospital and realized how much every little thing adds up. Armed with her past experience and a new goal of $20,000, Short and the rest of her team put together another marathon for 2018. Short served as Vice President and Sarah Larsen as President along with 13 other students on the executive staff, two hospital advisers and a faculty adviser. This year’s theme was “Dancing Through the Decades,” a theme that they hoped all the generations participating could relate to and have fun with. For nine hours straight, 218 participants danced and raised money for USA Children’s and Women’s. Previous patients of the hospital and their families visited throughout the evening and told their stories, reaffirming all the good that CMN does. One previous CMN patient who is a former student at USA couldn’t make it to the dance marathon because he was training for the Olympics. Nate Riech graduated from USA last year and was on the track and cross country teams while he attended the university. Riech was admitted to Phoenix Children’s Hospital at the age of 10 after being hit in the head by a golf ball. He suffered full paralyzation on the right side of his body. After only three weeks of therapy, he recovered and was able to walk again. “The doctors actually wrote an article on my quick recovery, because they said I would never be able to walk again without a limp,” he said. Thirteen years after his injury, Riech is now approaching achieving a 4-minute mile and is training for both the Paralympics and Olympics with the hope of being the first person to partici-
pate in both. Even though the accident put Riech and his family in a bind, he still says it was the best thing to ever happen to him. “It taught me a lot of lessons and opened my eyes. My experience was very positive in the hospital, which isn’t always the case. I think CMN does such a great job because they help the kids recover in their own environment. Honestly, all you want as a kid in a hospital is to feel normal,” Riech said. CMN hospitals like USA Children’s and Women’s fight to make recovery and treatment as easy as possible for children, especially since they may not always know what everything means. USA dance marathon’s three goals were to make the children happy, help the hospital and show people how great the hospital is. Short emphasizes that they want all the attention to go towards the hospital, not on the fact that they are raising so much money. Hospital Advisor for the USA dance marathon Nancy Calhoun agrees with this. She wants people to get to know more about USA Children’s and Women’s. “Our culture at the hospital is what makes us unique. We are a smaller children’s hospital, but we have that family feel. We are all just one big family that helps each other out. A lot of people on campus don’t know that we have a hospital right here, so we want to raise that awareness,” Calhoun said. After months of fundraising and nine hours packed full of games, stories and a lot of dancing, the 2018 USA dance marathon raised $20,759 for the kids. Short and Calhoun hope the marathon continues to grow in the coming years and shine a light on all the great things USA Children’s and Women’s does.

You’ll end up liking an organization or physical activities. It’s a good stepping stone towards your future. Stay involved on campus and take on a leadership position. A lot of employers also look for that. I’ve learned so much about myself and grown so much socially and professionally through my involvements

Kayla Schafhirt Have fun! Have the college experience, but don’t lose track of what is going on in your classes. I have known so many people that have fallen into the mindset of only wanting to have “the college experience,” and they completely ignored their academic obligations. It is completely possible to enjoy all of the experiences in college and keep your grades up.
Autumn Courtney Take every opportunity South gives you. That can be in an internship, study abroad, organizations or even choosing a professor to be your mentor. South offers so much and it would be silly not to take advantage of it!
Jackie Pledger Come to class, and don’t schedule 8 A.M. classes. Never give up, because even though you are a freshman and all you want to do is hang out with your friends, Freshman year is the hardest. Once you get over it, it’s smooth sailing.
Lake Lolley Prioritize and learn time management skills. Adjusting to life in college can be really hard. You need to be able to have fun and enjoy the experience, but a quality higher education is a huge accomplishment so don’t lose site of that goal either.
