LETTER FROM THE EDITOR You can tell a lot about a person by what they create. Whether this be music, paintings, an innovative product or a publication, integrated within that singular thing is a piece of its creator. As Editor-inChief of Due South, I have the opportunity to weave a piece of myself into each issue we publish to the community. I feel that I have unintentionally done this with my two previous issues, but this one in particular feels the most personal to me yet. I feel a connection to each and every one of the stories in this issue, whether it be because I have experienced similar things, or because I empathize with someone struggling. My hope is that you, the reader, can feel my passion for this magazine radiating through these few thirty pages.

From being blessed enough to be able to work on planning and executing Focus Women’s Conference to getting my first tattoo this semester to cooking foods from different cultures for our holiday recipes story, I have experienced so many new things in these short five months. Due South has been at the heart of it all. This magazine is growing into exactly what it was meant to be six years ago when it was established. We are truly guiding students to new experiences and people who they may not have even thought of before. Readers learn about that guy with all those tattoos who ran with the bulls in Spain, and that girl who is struggling through life having lived paycheck to paycheck at one point. Due South is shining a light these stories and more.

As always, I hope you enjoy this issue; I truly believe it is our best yet. I give all credit where credit is due to my incredible staff of hard workers who manage to juggle college life along with creating this publication. It may seem impossible at times, but thank you all for pushing through with me to create something we can all be proud of.

Deja Thompson is working on finding her niche in college all while building herself for her future.

THE VOICE OF HOME From growing up low-class to facing financial struggle while in college, Deja Thompson has had a rough go at life. It is her willingness to strive that has set her apart from others in her situation.

H

ome. To Deja Thompson, home is right here in Mobile, Alabama, where she has lived all of her 22 years. Thompson is now a junior at the University of South Alabama, the third college she has attended.

Admittedly from a low-income family, Thompson has worked extra hard to stay here. Earlier this semester, she left a job at a shoe store and has been holding down another as a server. “I work five days a week – three days serving and two at Jaguar Productions.” As the music chair for Jaguar Productions, South’s activity planning board, Thompson’s goal is to make each event she plans “bigger and better” and to draw a wider audience.

In addition to JP, Thompson loves the diversity of college and is the membership director for the Black Student Union, where her goal is to pull in all sorts of people, make it cohesive with other oncampus groups and raise awareness.

Thompson has had to overcome incredible obstacles since her childhood to get where she is today. “My mom had me when she was fourteen. I didn’t know we were low-class because my mom and granny were always working to get me everything I needed.” She originally started college because her family wanted her to, not necessarily because she wanted to herself. Once she arrived at USA, she began to enjoy herself and being here on her own behalf. “My favorite part of college is meeting people from all over. Our campus is so diverse that I’m introduced to different cultures.”

I want to uplift people with kind words and...

Thompson has been evicted twice since attending college and is now living at home to save money. She also took a semester off of school while she was struggling with depression. “I was on academic probation, my cousin was just killed and I got evicted. I ended up cutting off my hair and basically blocking out everything and everyone.”

She usually spends her summer semester taking classes, but she took time off to fight her mental illness. She attributes her continuous conquering of depression to finding God again, as well as the strong women in her life. “Every woman in my life, from family to the church to campus, always encourages me to be me unconditionally. So, when I find myself upset, I know it’s time for me to challenge myself into enjoying the ways of life.” Now, when faced with depression, Thompson has a three-step solution. She prays first. Then, she’s honest with herself and those around her about her sadness.

Finally, she goes out and does the things she loves like Pinterest DIYs or practicing her hair and makeup skills. “Sometimes I still find myself getting depressed, but

now I don’t hide it. I’m comfortable saying I’m sad when I have everything to be thankful for. The devil wants us to hide our pains so that we’re left alone.” Now, Thompson says that she loves life. “We’re only as great as we allow ourselves to be.”

Thompson is majoring in interdisciplinary studies with a concentration in community service and a minor in communication. Her personal motto is to be the voice of H.O.M.E. – helping others maintain excellence. “You need to understand yourself first before helping people. A lot of people like to speak negativity over people and their situation.” A self-proclaimed social butterfly, Thompson loves to help people.

While discussing career options, she brought up ministry, combining her religion with her desire to be a positive influence in people’s lives. Figuring out what to do after she graduates is one of her goals she has set for herself. Another is to pay off her eviction debts by the end of the year. In the long run, she has “hopeless romantic ideals for [herself].”

When not on campus, she can be found swimming at the beach, rockclimbing or spending time with family, especially her younger sister, who is her best friend. “Home for me is just a safe zone. Basically, no matter what, I’m comfortable there. I never have to worry about judgment or anything.” Deja Thompson has worked her whole life to be that embodiment of home for others— accepting, loving and safe for all. So far, she has done a pretty good job.

Making the Most of it

As most college students can attest, freshman year is full of uncertainty, homesickness and confusion. Savannah Sapp shares her experience as a first year student at South.

T

hink of a time when you were the most comfortable you have ever felt. Remember how at ease you felt? Remember how you didn’t want to change a thing? Now imagine that when you’re getting settled in, happy, content and everything flips upside down. You’re in a new place, learning a new routine, navigating new locations and feeling completely lost all while continuing your education.

That is what college felt like for me.

My name is Savannah Sapp. I am a freshman from Dothan, Alabama. By senior year of high school, I decided that I wanted to go into the medical field. Of course, what school do I choose? I chose one three hours away from everything I have ever known. Why? Because it is the most optimal choice for my course of study.

I toured the University of South

Alabama in October 2017 as my senior year had fully begun. While under a lot of pressure regarding decisions on my future, I knew what I wanted to study, but I didn’t know where I wanted to attend school. Additionally, I didn’t house the financial capabilities to attend absolutely anywhere I dreamed of as I am sure most students can attest to. I made my decision after looking back and forth between Troy University and South.

Fast forward past a heap of stress and student loans, and August 18 had arrived. I’m sure this day will be drilled into my mind for the rest of my life.

Move-in day. Originally, I could not contain my excitement. I was thrilled to live in a new home and decorate my own space with an amazing roommate whom I had previously interacted with months before our move-in date. I was ready for

a new chapter...or so I thought.

After a final lunch date with my family, we said our goodbyes, and I was left alone. Alone is definitely what I felt in a new city I’m not familiar with where I didn’t know anyone.

When the night started to fall, I could feel this terrible feeling building up in my stomach. My roommate stayed with her family that night in the hotel room they booked for the weekend. I called my mother around 7 p.m. sobbing into the phone. I didn’t realize how quickly homesickness could sneak up on you and it stayed with me for about four or five days even after move-in.

Homesickness is a very different feeling unlike any other. I can only equate it to feeling trapped or imprisoned even though you have all of the freedom you could ever ask for.

How did I get over this? If I have to be honest, I really didn’t. Every day, I wish I could just bring my family here to live with me for the next four years.

However, I will tell you how I became myself again. I called my mother every night. There was no one who calmed me down better than the woman who raised me for 18 years. I cried to her claiming that I could not shake this sinking feeling. I remember one particular phone call during my routine crying session, she told me something that will always stick with me.

“Baby, you don’t know how hard it was for me to leave you there that day, but I wouldn’t have let you go if I didn’t think you could do it,” she said to me.

For some reason, those words were the push I needed to pick myself up by my bootstraps. I’m not sure how most students deal with homesickness, but I just needed that push from my number one support system.

Freshman year started in a whirlwind.

Soon, I met face to face with five classes that begged for my attention. Turns out, I am terrible at history even though it is one of my favorite subjects.

Upon the first couple of weeks, I joined three new clubs and got two oncampus jobs. No, I’m not busy at all. I quickly found my routine and began to adjust. Everything became easier than I was making it out to be. Before I knew it, I was a full-time college student trying to stay organized and make new friends.

Organization is definitely something I have learned to perfect during my first year of college.

With so many club meetings and deadlines, it can be very difficult to keep track of when you have to be where. A planner has been my lifesaver when it comes to this.

You would not believe how much I write in my planner every day. I highly recommend keeping one especially if you’re involved in different campus organizations.

Pulling away from academics for a moment, I will say that Mobile has a significantly different culture from my hometown. In Dothan, it is not really customary to celebrate Mardi Gras every year. Moving to the birthplace of Mardi Gras definitely has the potential to be an amazing experience because I have never been involved in such festivities. I am more than thrilled to learn all about the traditions and celebrations.

Culturally, moving to Mobile from such a small area was an enormous adjustment. I have come in contact with students who have completely different interests, backgrounds and ethnicities.

Now, I find myself making friends with people I would have been too shy to speak to. I have friends who are different from me, but also teach me so much

on a daily basis. This change has encouraged me to be open-minded and I have learned to explore different people more than I would have back home.

Becoming a college freshman is a very pivotal turning point in your life, and if I had any specific advice, I would say, “Make the most of it.” I believe that the way you spend your first year is an accurate reflection of how you will spend your years to come, and the best way to do so is by finding balance. I know it can seem a little silly to tell you to find balance while you are learning to live on your own for the first time, but hear me out.

It is very easy to overwork yourself and stretch yourself too thin. It is not difficult to crumble under the weight of stress. Find your balance, develop a study pattern and schedule that helps you to fully understand the information instead of cramming it all into one place.

When you’ve had a successful study session, give yourself some sort of reward. If you’re like me, you’ll have a nice date with two wonderful gentlemen named Ben and Jerry.

Enjoy personal time with friends.

Connecting with people who house the same interests as you do can be beneficial. It even helped me with the homesickness.

Most importantly, do what makes you happy. If you find that a different major is the right one for you, go with it. If you’re interested in a student organization because it excites you, go for it. If something benefits your life and spirit, chase it!

College means grasping your future by the horns and making it everything that you could ever wish for. It is more than possible. There is no reason why your future cannot be the brightest...even as a freshman.

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP Tattoos have been an outlet of expression, remembrance and art for centuries. Five USA students delve into the stories behind theirs.

I

nspired by a great passion for meaningful art forms, tattoos have been a way for people to express their own personal struggles, victories and passions since their original creation centuries ago. Tattooing has been used as forms of identity as well as methods of self-expression and are widely recognized as passionate art forms by many throughout our local community.

Many students on South Alabama’s campus use their tattoos to express important events or concepts that have touched their own lives.

Tattoo art is clearly becoming much more tolerated and accepted throughout the youth culture, but the normalization of this art form is still very necessary to remove the negative stigma that is often carried with it. In having conversations with students willing to share their tattoo stories, we found not only that each tattoo has its own particular message to share, but also that ink can be addicting.

Tattoos come in dozens of different

styles with some being more simplistic than others, but they all pointed back to a special memory or moment that touched these students deeply enough to want to outwardly express that feeling to the rest of the world.

Whether it be a tragic situation, a pull toward surrounding culture, a memorial, a gentle reminder of family or the mark of a memorable event, tattoos have provided a sense of comfort and security for centuries.

While the stigma behind the tattoo culture is still not where it should be, the art itself is becoming more and more widely accepted throughout the United States. People allow these art forms to help them take back their own lives that have been previously destroyed by unfortunate circumstance while others use them simply as a reminder of the beauty around them.

Whether it be a painful memory or a beautiful reminder, tattoos truly have something to offer everyone.

A catalyst for recovery Calin Caracol decided to get a tattoo due to the environment he was in. Being in the military, the art of tattooing was simply part of the culture - most military personnel had tattoos and were influenced greatly by those around them.

After losing his mother in 2011 to colon cancer, he used his tattoo as a “catalyst for the tension in the family.” Following his mother’s death, Caracol’s family took a major emotional hit leaving them broken and scarred. Caracol, though, was able to find comfort through the permanence of his tattoo which was “much like the permanence of the situation.”

Being able to use his love for tattooing as a source of emotional relief has allowed Caracol to continue living strongly despite the circumstances.

FOLLOWING FAMILY TRADITIONS Celeste Creamer started the early work on her tattoo at the age of 20 and dedicated it to the many generations of her family that have come and gone.

The beautiful marking of a magnolia flower represents her family line.

“Every parent, grandparent and family member before them have had a magnolia tree in the yard of their first home,” said Creamer.

To continue this tradition, Creamer decided to get a magnolia flower of her own in the form of a tattoo in addition to having one planted in her yard.

Every time she looks at her tattoo, it simply “reminds [her] of home.” Family ties are a popular reason for tattooing.

After moving away for college or careers, people often enjoy having a mark to remind them of their roots.

for the aesthetics Kenyan Carter got his first tattoo when he was only 18 years old. He claimed that he simply decided to get tattooed due to the “aesthetics” behind the act.

More simply, he “…liked the act of getting tattoos.” He then went on to say that he was influenced by a lot of his role models who also expressed themselves through the art of tattooing. While he had no particular reason for the artwork he got tattooed, his desire of wanting a tattoo for the sake of having one is what drives many people to get tattoos in the first place.

TAKING CONTROL Many people use their tattoos as an outlet for overcoming hardships and tragedy. Taylor Creswell received her tattoo at the age of 19 after getting out of the military. At the time, she had broken her pelvic bone and was caught in an abusive relationship. She felt as if she “was no longer in control of [her] body.”

In receiving her tattoo of angel wings across her back, she felt that she was taking back the control she lost for so long. Because wings are a symbol of freedom, this artwork is a unique symbol of “escape and empowerment.”

Her tattoo successfully allowed her to take back the freedom she once lost.

The resounding sense of confidence and accomplishment all ties back to the day she decided to take control of herself again. Thanks to her decision to get her tattoo, she is now able to be what she set out to be.

part of the culture Ben Beard has added to his collection of tattoos every other year starting at the age of 19. While participating in the running of the bulls in Spain, he was run over by one of the competing bulls. In memory of that, he got a tattoo on his knee of the bull that ran him over during one of the most memorable events in his life. While this unique story was enough to make him want to get a tattoo in honor of the event, he had different reasons for his other tattoos.

Living in Birmingham at the time, he claimed that he was simply

surrounded by the tattoo culture. Many of his friends were tattoo artists, and he realized quickly that he “could not stop after just one.” While tattoos are often a personal decision that people make, the act itself may often be encouraged by one’s surroundings. All people are influenced by their culture; however, the tattoo culture may be one of the most unique and intricate of them all.

The tattoo on his right arm depicts Cthulu over the Sand Island lighthouse at Mobile Bay. Beard has four other tattoos including one on his chest, shin, calf and shoulder.

The University of South Alabama hosted Focus this year, and the American Association of University Women USA Chapter was proud to help with the event in any way they could.

“This was a pleasure to host at USA. Many AAUW members were able to experience the conference, and it truly was an amazing experience for them,” said Lauren Prescott, president of USA’s AAUW chapter.

Focus attendees had the option of choosing out of 16 breakout sessions Anjali Forber-Pratt didn’t let a paralyzing disease stop her. OUR HISTORY USA has seen a number of notable key moments in its brief 55 year history. Here, we highlight a few that make the university what it is today.

USA was founded on May 3 by act of the Alabama Legislature.

Five months later, the Board of Trustees met for the first time and named Dr. Frederick P. Whiddon as the university’s first president.

The jaguar was adopted as USA’s mascot in April. At one point, USA owed a live jaguar named Mischka, who has a statue dedicated to her in front of the Mitchell Center.

The first classes began in June with 276 students enrolled.

USA currently has over 15,000 students enrolled.

USA’s first commencement ceremony was in June where 88 bachelor’s degrees were given.

To date, the university has awarded more than 75,000 degrees.

Mobile General Hospital was transferred to USA. It later became USA Medical Center. Each year, the hospital handles 185,000 clinic visits and 350,000 outpatient procedures.

The inaugural season for USA’s football team and marching band. Since then, the team has only had two head football coaches, the second of whom started this 2018 season.

The Jag Tran system was implemented for students to use as an alternate means of transportation. It currently runs five routes and has had more than 1,000,000 riders since it began operating.

Moulton Tower was constructed on campus as a beacon of togetherness and a symbol for the university. It was named in honor of President Gordon Moulton and his wife, Geri.

A Thousand Words The city of Mobile, Alabama was founded in 1702.

The Van Antwerp building is an iconic piece of Mobile’s skyline. Completed in 1907, it was the first skyscraper in the city with 11 stories. It was built for Garet Van Antwerp to house his pharmacy store with other offices in the upper floors. In 2012, Retirement Systems of Alabama (RSA) bought the building and renovated it for new office spaces. The original was constructed in 1896, and only stood three years before a fire destroyed it. The same architect was called in to reconstruct it, and that building still stands. When completed, it had one of Mobile’s first passenger elevators; Mobilians would come in just to try it out. One of the first locations for Gayfer’s department store, merged with Dillard’s in 1998, was in this corner building and was upheld by Mr. Gayfer himself.

Soul Kitchen is a venue downtown that is no stranger to locals. It hosts affordable concerts by local and nationally-recognized performers.

However, in the ‘50s, as shown in the photo, it was the location of a popular five-and-dime called F.W. Woolworth’s. The original architecture of the front of the building remains on Dauphin Street.

Pork Loin & Stuffing 1 3-pound pork loin, trimmed 2 tbsp oil, divided 1/2 cup chopped pancetta 1½ cups chopped fresh cranberries 1/2 cup fresh coarse breadcrumbs 2 tbsps packed brown sugar 1 tbsp chopped fresh rosemary 3/4 tsp freshly ground pepper, divided

DIRECTIONS Stuffed Pork Loin | 5.5 hrs · Brine the pork loin with brown sugar, salt and rosemary in a 9x13 in. baking dish. · Double butterfly the pork and pound to a thickness of 1/2 in.

Place pork in brine and refrigerate for 2-4 hrs. · Cook pancetta in skillet with 1 tbsp of oil until crisp.

Transfer to a bowl with any drippings and stir in cranberries, breadcrumbs, 2 tbsp brown sugar and rosemary. · Remove pork from brine, rinse well and dry thoroughly.

Season the pork with 1/2 tsp pepper. Spread the stuffing over the pork, roll tightly and secure in four places with kitchen string. Sprinkle with 1/4 tsp pepper. · Preheat oven to 375°F. · Heat 1 tbsp oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the pork. Brown on all sides, turning often, for 5-8 mins. · Place on the prepared baking sheet. Roast the pork, turning twice, until a baking sheet lined with foil thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the meat registers 140°F, 45 mins.-1 hr.

Let rest for 10 mins. before slicing.

Mashed Sweet Potatoes 6 sweet potatoes 3/4 cup milk 1/2 cup butter 3/4 cup maple syrup

Gravy 1 medium white or yellow onion 1 stick butter, room temperature 1 cup all purpose flour 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground pepper 32 oz any kind of stock

Mashed Sweet Potatoes | 45 mins | Vegan · Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add potatoes and cook until tender, 20-30 mins. · With an electric mixer on low, blend potatoes, slowly adding milk, about 1/2 cup at a time. Use more or less to achieve desired texture. Add butter and maple syrup to taste. Blend until smooth. Serve warm.

Gravy | 30 mins | Vegan option available · Peel and coarsely chop the onion into rings or chunks. · In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the stick of butter and add chopped onion. Stirring occasionally, sauté the onion for 12-15 mins. until translucent and soft.

Remove the onion, and puree in a food processor. · Add flour, a few tbsps. at a time, to the butter and whisk to form a paste-like consistency. Add the onion puree.

You may not use the full cup of flour. · Add ~1/4 cup of stock then more flour to keep the consistency. Add the remainder of the stock and bring to a slow boil, whisking. · Add salt and pepper to taste. Continue to boil for another 10 mins. or so until the gravy has thickened.

INGREDIENTS Hoppin’ John 4 (or so) slices of bacon 1 large onion, chopped 1 large bell pepper, chopped 1 stalk celery, chopped 2 tbsp fresh garlic, chopped 2 cans chicken stock (water will do) 1 lb smoked sausage, chopped in 1-inch chunks 1 lb dry black-eyed peas (soaked) 3 bay leaves 1/2 tsp Red pepper 1/2 tsp dried thyme 1 14-ounce can tomatoes, undrained 3 cups cooked rice Raspberry Brie 1 pastry sheet 1 wheel of brie 1/4 cup of any type of jam (raspberry used) 1 egg Pomegranate Mojito Mocktail 1/2 lime 1 tbsp of simple syrup 2-3 mint sprigs 2 oz of 100% pomegranate juice 4 oz of lemon or lime sparkling water Ice cubes

DIRECTIONS Hoppin’ John | 2.5 hrs · Brown the bacon in a Dutch oven. Remove the bacon and eat it. Sauté the onion, bell pepper and celery in bacon grease until onions are clear. Add garlic and cook for another minute or so. · Add stock, sausage, peas and seasonings. Cover and let simmer for about two hours. Check for doneness of peas before continuing. · Add tomatoes and cooked rice (about three cups, depending on how thick you want it) and cook uncovered on low heat, stirring often to prevent sticking.

Raspberry Brie | 30 mins · Thaw the pastry sheet and lay it out flat on a baking sheet. Put jam in the middle. Lay the unwrapped brie on top of the jam. Wrap the pastry sheet around the brie and turn over with the seams under. Beat egg and brush it over pastry. · Bake at 425 for 20-25 minutes, watching for when the pastry starts to get browned and flaky. · Serve with crackers, bread, fruits or nuts Pomegranate Mojito Mocktail | 5 mins | Gluten-Free & Vegan · Muddle a quartered lime, simple syrup and a mint leaf. · Add some ice cubes, the pomegranate juice and the sparkling water. · Stir and garnish with mint sprig and limes.

INGREDIENTS Egg Rolls 1 package egg roll wrappers 1 lb ground pork (makes 25 egg rolls) 1 medium jícama (1/2 cup) 2/3 cup chopped onion 1/8 cup wood ear mushrooms, chopped 1/2 cup bean thread noodle, cut into 1” threads 1 tsp salt 1 tsp pepper 1 tsp sugar Egg Roll Wrap Sealer 1/4 cup water and 1 tbsp flour, microwaved until barely boiling Longevity Noodles 8 ounces thin wheat-flour noodles 2 tbsp toasted sesame oil 3 small cloves garlic, finely minced 1-2 tbsp low sodium soy sauce Salt and ground white pepper to taste Diced green onions & sesame seeds for garnish

DIRECTIONS Egg Rolls | 1 hr · Microwave a bowl of water for 40 secs. Soak bean threads and mushrooms until soft, about 30 mins. · Shred or finely chop onion and squeeze excess moisture out by hand. Add 1/2 tsp. salt to jícama, microwave until slightly soft and squeeze excess moisture out by hand · When soft, chop bean thread noodles and mushrooms · Add bean thread, mushrooms, onion, salt, pepper and sugar into a large bowl and mix thoroughly. Then mix in pork.

Add jícama last and mix well. · Wrap the egg rolls and fry at 325° F until golden brown and fully cooked inside.

About 12-16 mins. per batch.

Longevity Noodles | 10 mins · In a large pot, boil water over high heat and salt generously. Add the noodles in, stir and cook per package instructions. Drain. · Set the noodles aside in a large serving bowl. · In a separate small bowl, whisk the sesame oil, garlic, soy sauce, salt and white pepper until well combined. · Pour the mixture over the noodles and toss until evenly coated. · Garnish with diced green onions and sesame seeds and serve immediately.

DIRECTIONS Beignets | 1 hr · In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water · Add sugar, salt, eggs, evaporated milk and mix well · Mix in 4 cups of the flour and beat until smooth · Add the shortening, then the remaining 3 cups flour · Cover and chill for up to 24 hrs. · Roll out dough 1/8 in. thick. Cut into 2 1/2 in. squares · Fry in 360° F hot oil. If beignets do not pop up, oil is not hot enough. how to do your part USA has a drop off for recyclable plastics 1-7, steel, glass, aluminum, paper and cardboard. It’s on the first left once exiting onto USA North Drive from the traffic circle. The city also has multiple recycling centers within 5 miles of the university.

Target, Walmart and other major stores have bins to recycle old cell phones, ink cartridges and plastic bags.

Different types of plastics have different codes on them that help you separate them when recycling. Check the bottom of the packaging for the number inside the recycling symbol to see what its code is. Some recycling centers may not accept all types, so it is important to check.
