LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

C

ollege is for finding your passion. At least, that’s what everyone keeps telling me. When I began college just last year, I did not expect to find my passion. I expected to get my bachelor’s degree, somehow find a job and then start my life. That’s the thing: I expected my life to really start after college. I did not expect to receive any opportunity during college that would make me think that my life really started now. “Those are the select few people who actually become successful during college. That can never be me,” I thought to myself my freshman year. That all changed when I earned the position of Editor-in-Chief of Due South.

The biggest piece of advice I can give to any college student is to earn that recognition. Earn that position. Earn that degree. At the same time, find your passion. If you think you are busy now, just wait until you graduate and have a career. Find that passion now, while you have the time and energy to put into it. You never know where it can lead you. Miraculously, I found mine in student media.

This semester has been one of the busiest, craziest, most emotional, most time-consuming and most rewarding ones in my life so far. I would not replace it with any other experience, and I hope that you thoroughly enjoy this magazine.

Our goal is to bring together The University of South Alabama and the Mobile community; we want to be the link between campus and community. We want to be there for every laugh, every smile, every tear, every celebration, every victory and every touching moment that happens in Mobile. We want to bring the community together like no magazine has done before. Mobile is a place like no other, and we want to highlight that. Our university is just as unique as the city surrounding it; each person has their own stories and experiences, hopes and dreams, likes and dislikes. We want to highlight it all. The students, the campus and the community are what make USA unique, so grab a seat and enjoy learning why.

D

eath. Often the most horrifying and crushing concept in the world, but a harsh reality for me. Each day, the face of death stares me down with its darting eyes and menacing grin. When I look in the mirror and see the dark circles under my eyes, the sharp outline of my ribs and collar bones, the devastating scars from various surgeries and procedures, the awkward protrusion in my upper chest where my port has been placed, peeling palms and chapped lips and pale, sickly skin, I see death.

Not only do I see death, but I feel it through the short, gasping breaths often followed by a faint wheeze, chills caused by frequent fevers, delirium due to my extreme fatigue and overall disinterest through no fault of my own.

Nothing about my outer appearance indicates life. In fact, it screams death.

I discovered this reality at a very young age when I was diagnosed with the chronic, genetic disease known as Cystic Fibrosis. One could describe this hilariously ironic disease as a type of progressing domino effect, where each little calamity causes the next but to an even higher degree.

From the maintenance of a healthy weight to the coughing fits that lead to vomiting, each ailment tends to lead to another and then comes right back around in the same cycle. Constant betrayal by your own body could arguably be considered the definition of hell, but even with all things considered, life, for me, remains manageable due to one simple choice that affected my entire world: in the midst of death, I chose life.

Cystic Fibrosis has been generally known as a childhood illness for the majority of its known existence, but for me, it has been defined as something entirely different.

I remained relatively healthy throughout my early childhood, only needing to be hospitalized about once a year. My parents were determined to introduce me to a “CF regimen” at a young age and keep me loyal to it. After waking up each morning, I ate breakfast and did my breathing treatments along with my Vest before I was ever able to go outside and play with my friends.

Despite those additional responsibil-

ities, I was never miserable. Treatment was simply routine, and I was used to it. Having a healthy mindset at such a young age allowed me to feel like less of an outcast and more like a “normal kid.”

I ran and jumped and played just like any other child would, and I was happy.

I was one of the lucky ones. This illness did not rob me of my childhood because my parents, grandparents and I did not allow it to, and that sense of normalcy is more than anything I could have asked for as a little girl. My mother always told me that everyone has something. Everyone is given some sort of baggage in life that they are expected to cope with, and Cystic Fibrosis just happened to be mine.

I remember it like it was yesterday the day that my illness took my breath away. Usually when a teenage girl speaks of her breath being taken away, she is thinking of a cute boy who swooned her at school or an incredible view on a once-in-a-lifetime vacation, but this was different.

I woke up on the early Monday morning of Nov. 1, 2010, just six days before my fourteenth birthday. I sat up in my bed ready to take on the new day, and I yawned. I knew immediately that something was wrong. I expanded my chest to its full capacity and realized quickly that my lungs simply were not expanding the way they did the day before. I was afraid.

As I hopped out of bed and onto the cold tile floor, I grabbed every respiratory treatment I could find and got to work. I sat through what felt like hours of simple airway clearance as the vibrations of my Vest singed my skin and shook my lungs and the salt of my sodium chloride treatment coated my throat. I coughed until I gagged, and despite my best efforts nothing seemed to help.

I sat on the floor of my tiny bedroom in total dismay, trying to understand what was happening to my body, and then it hit me.

I had taken my last deep breath on Oct. 31, 2010. From that moment on, Cystic Fibrosis became more than just a chronic illness for me; it became a constant battle. From the wrinkling and

sloughing of my hands to the sensitivity caused by my geographic tongue, Cystic Fibrosis was suddenly affecting areas of my life that I never thought possible.

Coughing and wheezing were no longer the sole culprits associated with this illness, and I was not prepared for this progression.

Sitting upright in my tiny, stiff hospital bed, I glanced around the room at the many sights and sounds that surrounded me. From the slow drip of my IV to the faint sounds of television reruns and birds chirping outside of my window, I began to feel life slowly slip through my fingers. I feel so removed. That feeling of complete and total isolation must arguably be the most difficult aspect that comes with any prolonged hospital stay.

I watched my friends continue to go to school, play sports and live their lives while mine seems only to be standing still, and I have found myself, in multiple instances, wondering whether or not all of this is really fair. Maintaining a positive attitude while isolated in a hospital room, while difficult, is manageable,

however, due to the simple motivation to fight.

That constant sense of betrayal by your own body manages to bring with it an uncontrollable sense of failure, as if there is nothing you can do to turn your life around. I have found, though, through many years of coping with this disease, that the most vital aspect to managing the stress and

hopelessness of any chronic illness is a positive mind. Each day, I wake up ready to face whatever challenges may be thrown my way, whether it be exceptionally difficult school work, new projects at the workplace or even simply the ability to keep my lungs functioning the way that they should. This positive attitude and willingness to fight has allowed me to overcome life’s obstacles thus far.

Throughout my life, doctors regularly told me that I could expect for each day to be a battle that I would have to overcome, and over time I have found that they were undoubtedly correct. This disease, though, in turn, has brought me so much more than any doctor could have ever predicted.

With Cystic Fibrosis not only comes persistent coughing, soreness and fatigue, but also a sense of accomplishment and a better appreciation for life as a whole. Through my involvement with the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, I have been given the incredible opportunity to meet and get to know so many extraordinary people who dedicate so much time to the

cause, and I was able to build my own self-confidence through them.

Before long, I found myself speaking in front of crowds and sharing my story at fund-raisers and events in efforts to assist those who also struggle with this illness. I have always described Cystic Fibrosis to be my biggest blessing and my biggest curse, because while it manages to knock me down to my breaking point, that sense of accomplishment and dedication to living a healthy life picks me up again. For that, I will be forever grateful. Many people believe that Cystic Fibrosis is simply a physical battle that one must conquer to remain happy and healthy. I would have to disagree. Conquering this illness on a daily basis takes more brainpower than any other activity I have ever had to face. With the right attitude and mindset, fighting Cystic Fibrosis becomes easier and much more manageable. It has been said that pain is inevitable, but suffering is a choice, and throughout my life, Cystic Fibrosis has proven this statement to be completely true.

Strangers who do not know me may quickly glance at my pale, sickly appearance, hear my cough comparable to that of a smoker of 30 years and immediately feel sorry for me. I can honestly say, though, that a day has yet to come when I have woken up feeling sorry for myself.

I wholeheartedly believe that life is a gift and a privilege, and the fact that I was lucky enough to be chosen to experience all the amazing blessings that this life has to offer is truly the greatest blessing.

I learned to enjoy the warmth of the rays of the sun that reflect off of the

coast where I am more than blessed to live, the beautifully satisfying feeling of piano keys clicking beneath my fingers, perfect harmonies in a song, the touch of the tiny hand of my 3-year-old brother wrapped around my finger, the sound of my 17-year-old brother’s witty sense of humor followed by a contagious laugh, the feeling of my puppy cuddled up next to me in bed, the sound of the voice of my best friend during our seemingly endless FaceTime sessions, the refreshing feeling of warm water hitting my tired skin following rigorous exercise, the sweet taste of local honey, the crispy first bite of a Butterfinger bar and the smell of the rain.

The simplest of things, although small, have brought me a lifetime’s worth of happiness within a short 20 years.

I have always admired the quote, “find what makes you happy, and let it kill you,” because while death is inevitable, life is a choice. Even in the face of death, there is life; the only key is finding it where you would least expect it.

DELICIOUS DINING IN A DORM

Four Thanksgiving recipes you can make with only a slow cooker in the comfort of your own dorm room.

CINNAMON SUGAR GLAZED CARROTS Prep time: 5 mins cook time: 3-4 hrs

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. baby carrots 2 tbsp. melted butter ½ cup packed brown sugar 1 ½ tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. salt 2 tbsp. butter Grease your slow cooker with the butter.

Add the carrots and melted butter. Make sure you toss the carrots to ensure they are all buttered.

Cook them on high for 3-4 hours until tender.

While the carrots are cooking, mix the brown sugar, cinnamon and salt in a small bowl until the mixture is blended well.

Add the brown sugar mixture to the carrots just before serving.

Garlic Mashed potatoes Prep time: 5 mins cook time: 2-3 hrs

INGREDIENTS 2 lbs. red potatoes 4 tbsp. butter ½ cup sour cream 1 tbsp. minced garlic 2 tsp. salt 1 tsp. pepper ¼ cup. milk 1 tbsp. olive oil Wash and chop potatoes into 2-inch cubes.

Grease your slow cooker with olive oil.

Add all of the potatoes.

Put the lid on and cook on high for 2-3 hours.

When the potatoes are easily pierced with a fork, they are done.

Add the remaining ingredients and use either a potato masher or a hand mixer to combine until they reach the desired consistency.

turkey Prep time: 10 mins cook time: 6-7 hrs

INGREDIENTS 4lb thawed turkey breast (with skin) 1 head of garlic 1 onion 1 ½ tsp. garlic powder 1 ½ tsp. onion powder 2 tsp. salt 1 ½ tsp. ground black pepper 2 tsp. olive oil Combine the garlic and onion powder, salt, pepper and olive oil.

Once they’ve been whisked together, rub the mixture onto the turkey.

Halve the whole head of garlic and the whole onion horizontally.

Put them face down in the bottom and then place the turkey on top.

Cook on high for 6-7 hours.

apple crisp Prep time: 5 mins cook time: 2.5 hrs

INGREDIENTS For the topping: 1 ¼ cups all-purpose flour ¾ cup rolled oats ½ cup packed brown sugar 1 tsp. cinnamon ¼ tsp. kosher salt 8 tbsp. unsalted butter, melted

For the filling: 6 medium sized apples 1/3 cup granulated sugar 2 tbsp. all-purpose flour 1 tsp. cinnamon 1 tbsp. lemon juice

Core and peel the apples and cut them into 1-inch pieces.

Combine the flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, salt and butter in a mixing bowl and stir. The mixture should be wet and crumbly. Set aside for now.

Grease your slow cooker with butter or cooking spray.

Add the apples, sugar, flour, cinnamon and lemon juice to your slow cooker. Stir it around until the ingredients are combined.

Spread it into an even layer across the bottom of your slow cooker. Spread the topping you set aside evenly across the top of the apples.

Place the lid and cook on high for 1 ½ hours. Remove the lid and cook until the topping browns and the fruit is tender (about one hour).

oulton Tower is the most iconic piece of scenery on The University of South Alabama’s campus. It inspired USA student Tyler Brandon to do something no other student has done before. He composed and conducted his own concert honoring Moulton Tower.

Brandon’s parents said that his first day on campus, he saw the bell tower and said “that tower is going to mean something to me one day.” Brandon’s premonition was right, because he decided to use the bell tower as inspiration for his research thesis for the Honors College.

As a music education major, Brandon did not want to take the typical route, spending hours thumbing through books or dissecting fruit flies for research. Instead, he wrote and conducted his own concert dedicated to the bell tower. Dr. Greg Gruner took on the challenge of becoming his research mentor, and Brandon said that he has been nothing but helpful on this two-year

journey. Brandon said he chose Gruner as his mentor because he has been his trombone instructor since arriving at USA. Brandon said he and Gruner have a similar style of composing. Gruner even ended up playing the trombone in the concert.

Brandon said he decided to dedicate the concert to Moulton Tower because of the impact it has had on him.

“I have been fascinated with it ever since I came to South.,” he said. “I love bells.

When they ring, they produce so many different sounds. Moulton Tower is what you picture when you think of South.”

Brandon asked Geri Moulton, former first lady of USA and wife of the late

former President Gordon Moulton, to get involved in the project.

“Mrs. Geri said that when they built the tower, they wanted a place where students could go to unwind and relax,” Brandon said. “She also mentioned that Mr. Moulton always loved commencement, so I wanted my pieces to reflect these.”

The first piece of the concert, entitled Moulton Fanfare, is meant to honor late President Moulton by recreating the sounds that one would hear at hear at a commencement ceremony.

The second piece, entitled Moulton Tower Suite, is meant to reflect the Moultons’ original goal of giving students a place to relax. Each movement within the piece is meant to portray the bell tower at different times of the day “Creatures of the Shadows” during the anxious part of night and “Nocturnal Love-Beauty of Night” during the peaceful part of night. The final movement “It’s Time to Come Home-Commencement” was inspired by the email that late President Moulton sent to alumni to announce the dedication of the tower.

“Alumni, it’s time to come home,” Moulton said.

The music alone and the location under the bell tower itself conveyed these messages.

Tyler worked on the concert for two years before finally perfecting it at the end of the fall semester of his senior year. He asked his fellow music students to volunteer to play in his concert, and he received a resounding amount of support. The group of 19 musicians practiced together only twice before the concert, but Tyler had confidence in them no matter what.

Geri Moulton helped out along the way, too.

“I attended one of the practices, and I had to step out for a moment because I became so emotional,” Geri Moulton said. “You all are so young and have so much energy that it is hard for you to understand life and how easily you can lose it.”

When the day finally came, everyone was on the edge of their seats. While other music majors had written concerts for their research theses before, none

had actually performed them before, according to Brandon.The turnout was so great that some people sat down on blankets while others stood in the back.

The concert began just as the bell tower chimed on the hour mark. Each movement kept listeners entranced with beauty and rhythm. Brandon put a great deal of thought into each movement, so that each one had a different mood and sound.

From the familiar sound of the bell tower itself, to the uneasiness of “Creatures of the Shadows” to the uplifted mood of “It’s Time to Come Home,” the concert brought about an array of emotions. The concert concluded with the bell tower chiming, yet again, in tune with the music.

His parents were proud of all that he had accomplished.

“We knew he had it in him. We’ve heard him do this since middle school....” his father, Donald Brandon said. “He has been doing it for a while, but now he has taken it to a whole new level.”

“I woke up today with tears in my eyes.” his mother Debbie Brandon said.

“The whole day has been full of emotions.”

Dr. Kathy Cooke, dean of the Honors College, said that this type of event aligns perfectly with her vision for the college.

“This concert illustrates a lot of things about the Honors College,” Cooke said.

“One of which is the joy that we find in the creation of culture together.”

Brandon’s concert celebrated USA’s most iconic landmark and represented the college in the best way possible, by bringing people together through a mutual love of the arts and of USA.

ABCS OF LIVING YOUR BEST LIFE IN COLLEGE College can be tough, but following this ABC guide can make it a little bit easier. | By Lexi Naughton, Photos by Savannah Weaver

A is for Attitude.

Maintaining a positive attitude may be one of the most difficult things you will face throughout your four years in college. When the stress levels rise due to copious amounts studying, homesickness and full agendas, it is important to keep a positive state of mind. With a good attitude and a happy heart, college life will be a breeze.

H is for Heart. It will hurt, but it will always heal. While college has the ability to enhance your life a hundred fold, it also has the ability to knock you down to your lowest point. Never give up. Always remember that pain is temporary, but suffering is a choice. If you fall do not be afraid to get back up again.

I is for Instincts. Unfortunately, your parents are probably not here to remind you of right and wrong. College is all about trusting your instincts and listening to that little voice in your head that is telling you to not cheat on that test. Never be afraid to listen to your instincts. They will be taking on the parental role while you’re here.

R s R is for Read.

It has been said that reading is either a passion or a struggle with no in between.

However, it is possible to learn to love to read.

Picking up a book to read for a few minutes each day may not only calm your nerves but also may make it easier to read in the future. So, pick up a book every now and again. You may find that it will benefit you in the long run.

B is for Budgeting. You will find very quickly that there is no such thing as a “rich college student.”

Money seems to fly down the drain faster than ever before. When this reality hits, it may be time to get to work. Whether it be an on-campus student assistant opportunity, babysitting job or a position at a restaurant off campus, earning some extra cash is definitely doable even in college.

J is for Join.

College is about building experiences.

We are fortunate enough to attend a university that offers hundreds of different ways to get involved on campus. Do not be afraid to join a few clubs in order to enhance your college experience, but be careful not to overwhelm yourself.

S is for Study. Never ever put off studying. It is very easy in college to use the words “I will get to it later,” but the motivation may never come. It is important to take advantage of any free time that you may have in college, because it can be very hard to find.

Educational success is the ultimate reason that you are here, anyway. Take advantage of every opportunity you receive and hit the books.

C is for Class. Go… to… class!

No matter how late you stayed up last night or how rainy it is outside, it is incredibly important to get out of bed and go to class. It may seem like it is “only one class,” but once the habit of skipping is formed, it is difficult to break. So, stay motivated and keep a steady attendance record. Your GPA will thank you later.

K is for Knowing.

You will find that it is convenient to cram as much information as possible the night before a test.

However, this does not allow any information to be retained and will not benefit you in the future. When studying, it is important to do so in increments to understand the material rather than to just memorize it.

t

T is for Tears.

Unfortunately, tears are one of the most inevitable aspects of a normal college career. Tears will come with stress, joy, surprise and sadness. Tears will come and tears will go, but friendships and memories will always remain.

L is for Laziness. Do not let it get the best of you. You will find yourself, in many instances, lying in bed binge watching your favorite Netflix show and dreading the home- work that is due in the next hour. Do not take the zero. Remember why you are in college and what you are striving to achieve in your time here.

Success doesn’t come without effort, so put forth the effort.

U is for Umbrella. It is official–you are now a student in the rainiest city in the United States (a.k.a. Mobile).

You will find very quickly that even on the sunniest of days, it is reasonable to expect an afternoon shower. So, bring an umbrella!

De

E is for Eating. I am sorry to say that the nice, home-cooked meals that you may be used to at home do not follow you to college, and mom’s cooking is no longer a treat you can rely on at the end of the day. So, in order to maintain a healthy diet, it is important to eat substantial meals throughout the day. Don’t be afraid to add a side salad to that fried chicken every now and then!

D is for Dorms. Going from living in an open and spacious bedroom of your own to sharing a tiny living space with another person can obviously be very difficult. It has been said, however, that the first step to living an organized life is keeping your living space clean.

No matter how busy you get or how tired you are, keep that dorm room clean!

M M is for Money. Get used to having very little of this, and when this reality hits, take it back to letter B.

v

N is for No. One of the very best lessons that can be learned in college is how and when to say “no.” If all your friends are going out the night before a big test, it is absolutely not a crime to say “no” and choose to study instead. You will find that college is all about prioritizing and using your time wisely.

So, learn to say “no” every once in awhile.

V is for Values. Values are the only things that have the ability to stick with you no matter where you go or how crazy life gets. Throughout this transition into college life remember your values. Never let another person or situation test what you are about.

Stand your ground. Fight for what you know is right.

w

W is for Worthwhile. In college, there are many amazing opportunities that will surface but will require many steps to get there. Do not be afraid to go the extra mile to reach those worthwhile experiences. They will not only enhance your college career but also will allow you to grow into your best self.

O is for Open. Be open to new friends, new ideas and new opportunities. Change is very difficult, but without this change, we would not receive the tools to grow into the people we are meant to be. Always be sure to embrace the next stepping stone in life with confidence and be open to what is to come.

F is for Freedom. Sweet freedom; the one thing you have been looking forward to. However, if you have not realized it yet, freedom is not all it is cracked up to be. With freedom comes responsibilityresponsibility to attend class, eat right, maintain your health, budget money and better yourself.

As freedom increases, responsibility does, too, so try not to take it for granted.

X is for Xerox. You will find yourself printing a lot in college.

Whether it is printing out the syllabus before class starts or turning in a hard copy of a paper for your English class, you will most likely use a lot of ink. In these instances, you will need to find somewhere with free printing. Luckily, there are many remote locations throughout campus that offer free printing. However, if you want to add a convenience factor, buying a printer of your own may be a helpful option.

G is for Giving. The first step to bettering yourself in college is realizing that your college experience is not all about you. You will find the greatest amount of satisfaction through the act of giving back to others and to your community. USA offers many service projects and organizations to take part in, and taking advantage of these opportunities is something that you won’t regret.

P is for Parents. Remember, your parents are still your parents even when you are away at college. As challenging as this transition is for you, keep in mind that it is probably twice as difficult for them. So, be sure to pick up the phone every once in awhile.

You would be surprised at how easy it is to make their day.

Q is for Quirks. In college, you will find that everyone is different and that you are now living in a very diverse community. Use this to your advantage and embrace your quirks. Never be afraid to be yourself in a world that is trying to share a single identity.

Y is for Youth.

College years fall during the prime of your youth. You will never have as much energy, strength or drive as you do during this period of your life, so use this to your advantage.

z Z is for Zoom.

Lastly, you will find that your college years will zoom right past you, and before you know it, you’ll be walking across that stage to receive your diploma. Take advantage of all the time you have in college and all the experiences and people you encounter along the way.

Collegiate 100, Women of Excellence and Dirty Dan from 93 BLX hosted Battle of the DJs on Tuesday. Five talented DJs competed for the title of “Hottest DJ in the South” along with a $350 prize.

This event was a great success thanks to all those who came out and showed their support for their school and fellow classmates.

On Wednesday, students and faculty of the university headed over to the Student Center Mall in their finest Jag attire for #JagWEARWednesday to take pictures with SouthPaw and Miss Pawla at the photo booth constructed by SGA. Students gathered at the photobooth to show their Jag pride and pose with the mascots. They got to take home a souvenir photo to remember this monumental homecoming week.

Later that night, students and faculty made their way back to the Student Center for the Fun Fest where Jaguar Productions and SGA set up an amusements of all different kinds. In one room, they set up an oxygen bar with a throwback theme where students could use oxygen tubes to experience different smelly concoctions. This unusual activity was a crowd favorite with the line going out the door. Downstairs in the Student Center, there was a photobooth with Jaguar-themed props, a caricature artist and a dessert bar. Outside, the swing carnival ride, inflatable obstacle courses, spin art station, DJ and food lent a carnivalesque atmosphere.

Ivey Morris, a junior at USA, claimed that the Fun Fest was her favorite homecoming week event because, “It brings students together in a casual setting to have a good time and support our awesome university and all it has to offer.”

Students flocked to the free food and hung out with their friends as they enjoyed live music, attractions and all things South.

ver the years, homecoming week has brought an incredible amount of joy, excitement and togetherness to the students and faculty of the University of South Alabama. Throughout the week, the SGA presented the university with many fun and exciting events. From movie showings and bonfires to DJ battles and the Fun Fest, homecoming week was filled with events for all students, faculty and staff to enjoy. Event attendees had the opportunity to enjoy games, competitions and more food than they could eat as they celebrated homecoming week by “Roaring Through the Ages.”

On Monday, homecoming week kicked off with the tradition known as “Junk the Jungle.” This long-standing tradition is a favorite among students because they get the opportunity to throw toilet paper rolls into the trees in the traffic circle on USA’s campus. This event has had a great turnout over the years, and students came out again this year to keep up the tradition. SGA provided the rolls, and students provided the armwork by throwing over 1,000 rolls total high into the trees and bushes. Remnants of the event clung to the foliage long after homecoming week ended as a reminder of the good times that brought students together.

Logan Arnold, a junior at USA, described the event to be, “…a fun tradition for students who did not get the chance in high school, like when my high school did this when we made it to playoffs.” Thanks to the SGA, this fun and lively tradition continues to live on.

However, also according to Arnold, a smart student may be inclined to simply “…take some toilet paper and run so they don’t have to buy their own.” So, be on the lookout, SGA! Following this fun tradition, students made their way to the intramural fields to enjoy popcorn, snacks and refreshments during an outdoor showing of “Wonder Woman” and a bonfire. This thrilling combination brought students together to enjoy the unusually cool weather, a great film and each other as

enjoyed an all-you-can-eat frozen treat.

Gamers enjoyed the NBA 2K18 Tournament where they could put their 2K skills to the test. The Homecoming Comedy Show was a big hit because of comedians Marlon Wayans and Jay Pharaoh. Students were able to share a laugh with the comedians while also sharing some Jag Pride. Later that night, the Alumni Association held a dinner honoring the fiftieth anniversary of the first graduating class of the University of South Alabama in 1967.

All of these events allowed students to kick back and enjoy the company of their peers while simply enjoying a sweet treat, gaming with one another or simply sharing a laugh.

On Friday, students and faculty gathered on South Drive to watch the annual USA Homecoming Parade.

nizations. The Jaguar Marching band performed throughout the whole parade keeping spectators lively and ready to catch beads. Each homecoming maid and the homecoming king had their own vehicles in the parade. President Tony Waldrop and First Lady Julee rode in the parade, too.

A pep rally at the Mitchell Center followed immediately after the parade where students were able to show their Jaguar Spirit while the Jaguar Marching Band and team captains pumped up fans for Saturday’s game.

Head Coach of the football team Joey Jones spoke to the crowd about the team’s exciting win against Troy University the previous week in the “Battle for the Belt” and the anticipated win the following night at the homecoming game. He held the elaborate belt high for all to see as the crowd cheered him and the football captains on.

The Prowlers dance team gave a preview of their basketball season routine,

and the cheerleading squad kept spirits high with their classic cheers.

That evening, the National Pan Hellenic Council and the Office of Multicultural Student Affairs hosted a step show in the Mitchell Center where chapters performed step and dance routines competing against one another for the win.

Homecoming week concluded with a win against the Louisiana-Monroe Warhawks and the exciting announcement of Rachel Chamberlain as the 2017 USA Homecoming Queen.

Four women were chosen by their peers to represent the university alongside Chamberlain on the homecoming court at the halftime show during the homecoming football game, and Kenny Ngo was voted Homecoming King.

GOLDEN TIMES WITH GOLDEN JAGUARS The first graduating class from USA celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.

leven of the 88 students in the first graduating class at the University of South Alabama attended the Golden Jaguar Alumni Dinner to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of their graduation during homecoming week.

University President Tony Waldrop and Doug Whitmore, president of the USA National Alumni Association, presented each alumnus with a Golden Jaguar medal commemorating the special event.

The Southerners and USA faculty joined them in remembrance of old times.

Whitmore said that the Alumni Association had been planning this event for the past five years. In their speeches, he and President Waldrop reminded the 1967 graduates of what things were like 50 years ago.

According to Whitmore and Waldrop, gas was $0.33 per gallon, tuition was $60 per semester, the school colors were black and gold, there were only two buildings on campus, there were only three of the nine colleges we have now and there were only 88 students enrolled compared to the 15,500 enrolled this fall semester.

USA was unique right from its beginnings. All of the 88 graduates, except for a few transferred from the University of Alabama satellite campus located in Mobile.

The initial plan for the University was for it to be a degree-granting branch of the University of Alabama. However, trustees Ernest Cleverdon and Fred Whiddon and City Commissioner Joe Langan had an alternative idea-one for a brand new univeristy unique to Mobile.

Alabama was born on May 3, 1963.

Waldrop said the college was organized and opened within six months of the first meeting of its Board of Trustees on Oct. 18, 1963, and naming of its first president, Whiddon.

“The organizing and opening of a major institution of higher learning within only six months is unprecedented in the field of higher education,” said Austin R. Meadows, state superindendent of education, at USA’s June 1964 opening.

USA’s first students had their own stories as unique as that of the university’s founding. Rick Nelson, USA’s first SGA President, said the alumni enjoyed getting the chance to catch up with old friends and share memories of their college years. Nelson said that being at a small college was extremely beneficial to him.

“I transferred from the University of Alabama not knowing what to expect,” Nelson said. “Having such a small, new school was very helpful because it meant a lot of one-on-one time from professors. I will never forget how much they cared about our success and how much they helped us.”

Nelson said the thing he cherishes most from his time at USA is the interactions that he had with people and the lifelong connections that he made. Many of the alumni touched on how different the college is now. Nelson reminisced on the many dances that were held on campus, the snack bar that was located on the first floor of the Administration building and the field that was originally behind where the Student Center is located where he

went for botany class.

Larry and Karla Moons looked back on their time at South Alabama and remarked at the fact that Larry, along with being in the first undergraduate class at USA, was also in the first master’s graduating class. They are both appreciative of the professors and faculty who helped them along the way.

“The teachers cared about and understood us and our particular needs.

Since it was such a small school, it was personal,” said Karla.

Dr. Patricia Crosby Burchfield was introduced to USA in a unique way.

After having six children and moving to Mobile, she said that her husband applied for her and got her accepted to USA as a surprise to her.

Burchfield said her husband ran up to her and said, “You’re going to college!”

She asked him what she would study, and he said, “Well, that’s up to you.”

While each alumnus had different stories about their time at USA, all of them had one thing in common appreciation for former USA President Whiddon and all of the other faculty and staff. Many said that they would not have been able to graduate had it not been for their help and dedication to making USA what it is today.

Robert Keyser, the second SGA president, said no matter where he went, he always remembered his roots at USA. He said he can still hear Whiddon saying “you shoot for the moon” at the 1967 graduation ceremony.

“This comes back to me time and time again throughout my life and encourages me to do better than I thought I could,” he said.

“I wasn’t anything special, but, boy, he was,” Sharon Harper Sokol, who accepted the Golden Jaguar Alumni medal on behalf of her late husband Kenneth Sokol, said about Whiddon.

While the times have certainly changed, many of USA’s original values still hold true. USA is still a relatively small campus with a small student-tofaculty ratio, it is still growing and its students still have the same Jaguar pride.

In the words of Karen Edwards, director of alumni relations, “Once a Golden Jaguar, always a Golden Jaguar.”

Within it, students can report any type of crime from an accident to suspicious activity. Under Emergency Options, they can call 911 or the campus police. SafeWalk is another thing the app offers. Students, parents and friends can “watch” a person walk remotely through their devices if they feel that they are in an unsafe situation. It’s a way to feel comfortable walking somewhere alone or even with a group. It truly can be a life saver for anyone. It can put parents at ease, too.

All of the Jag Media information is also on this app under Student Media. The interractive map is helpful for finding your way across campus to new buildings or even just planning the shortest route to take to class. If you don’t know what HUMB means on your class schedule, all you have to do it type it in on the map and Humanities Building comes up. Thinking of switching your major?

There are even Jag Swag giveaways through the app, so check it out before you buy all those shirts in the bookstore. This app is beneficial to hopeful USA students, as well. They can schedule a visit to campus right in the app.

With the personalized news feature, they can learn more about their intended major before even enrolling at USA. This app is basically a filter for the USA website. It displays the content that you most likey be interested in based off of your listed interests and preferences.

pink, poised and powerful USA and the Mobile community come together to celebrate women impacted by breast cancer.

O

ver the last eight years, the University of South Alabama has hosted the annual Think Pink Tea fashion show in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is currently one of the most common and deadly forms of the disease. It affects one in eight women in their lifetime, and for many families it means losing a loved one to this vicious form of cancer. It is terrifying in the sense that almost everyone knows someone who has been affected by breast cancer such as a mother, a sister or even a friend who has been diagnosed with it.

“Nearly 4,000 women in Alabama are expected to receive a breast cancer diagnosis this year,” said Geri Moulton, the former first lady of USA and a strong advocate of breast cancer research.

However, thanks to advances in modern medicine, due in no small part to the Mitchell Cancer Institute and national recognition for the disease, the mortality rate for women diagnosed with breast cancer has never been lower. Since the institute’s inception, it has been a leading force in the battle against cancer with its research and study initiatives.

In honor and respect for those who have lost the battle and those who continue to fight, the month of October has become known as Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Participants in the various events of this month are given the opportunity to support research, raise awareness, celebrate life and mourn family and friends who are no longer with us.

One such event is the Think Pink Tea. The event embodies everything that the month of October symbolizes. Think Pink Tea is a fashion show put on by USA featuring breast cancer survivors

and fighters from all over Mobile and the Gulf Coast as models. The event also boasted a variety of - you guessed it - tea.

When you first entered through the front lobby, you were met with a myriad of elaborate pink and white decorations that continued into the grand ballroom where the show was held. The presence of life and joy was in the air as women shared their own stories and the stories of their friends and family members.

After a brief introduction and a moment of silence for all the people who lost their fight to breast cancer, the fashion show began.

Carlisha Harzog hosted the fashion show and introduced each woman by sharing her story of fighting breast cancer.

Think Pink Tea is about so much more than the gorgeous clothes and makeup. The cheers, applause and shared stories of victory over adversity create bonds of friendship that last a lifetime.

-moulton Family members and other volunteers escorted the women down the runway to make their fashion debut. From the first model to the last, the women radiated energy and life. Their spirits appeared to have never been higher and smiles had never been larger.

While some women strutted, others chose to dance their way down the runway.

“The stylish clothes are generously supplied by Dillard’s, and TMAC Hair Salon offers complimentary hair styling and professional makeup,” said Moulton.

The fashion was primarily focused on fall colors such as reds, browns, oranges and, of course, pink.

Before each model hit the stage to show off their elegant fashion, Harzog gave a brief overview of each model’s story, struggles and varying conditions with breast cancer.

The women had a great time modeling, strutting and dancing down the runway to the sounds of a live band. Afterward, they all had the chance to catch up with each other and trade stories over tea.

Venardos Circus returns to Mobile to showcase talent while conveying a powerful message to the community.

ormer Ringling Bros. Ringmaster Kevin Venardos brought The Venardos Circus, a Broadway-style circus act, to Mobile.The traveling circus visited for the first time in February 2017, transforming the Alabama Contemporary Art Center into a classic circus environment while performing its show Cirque du Mardi Gras.

The show then moved to its own red-and-white striped tent and featured everything from musical numbers to breathtaking stunts.

Staff members waved in crowds of attendees while cheering, “Step right up, the show’s about to start!” while the scent of popcorn filled the air.

As the attendees found their seats, the lights dimmed until only the ring was lit.

Then the host, Kevin Venardos, ran up and the show began.

“There’s suspenseful elements and daredevil acts,” Venardos said. “All these elements are stitched together with a little storytelling.”

The story changes with each show. In February, the story followed the “Lost Cause Minstrels” as they sought to join a Mardi Gras parade.

In November, the circus was looking for a hero. “The story is this: There are other circuses that are rolling up their tents and calling it quits,” Venardos said. “[In this story], we’re actually looking for

someone to step up and save the circus.

What we need is a hero.”

The show featured several multigeneration circus families. Many of the actors performed multiple times throughout the show. “Ten people are making this entire operation happen,”

“I believe, and I have some great friends here believing with me, that the circus is not ending; it is simply changing and moving forward.”

-kevin Venardos Venardos said. “The cast is also the crew. A small group of people can accomplish some astounding things.”

The performers also did the setup and breakdown for the circus.

“I have to ask three or four different jobs from each person on our crew,” Venardos said. “It’s absolutely essential to be able to deliver the multitude of things that are going on in the production.”

Vivien Larible España acted on the static trapeze, an aerial hoop and a chiffon ribbon while her husband and

children performed other acts ranging from the cyr wheel to contortion. Ivan Enriquez and Duna Alvarez performed a sensual duo trapeze act. Adilson and Gilda Fernandes did a high-reaching chair stacking and balancing act.

In true Broadway style, a story unfolded before the audience in between the acts, often leading into musical numbers with cheerful tunes and brilliant costumes.

Being a live show, sometimes the actors had to become their own heros in order to keep their acts seamless even in the face of danger.

“I always forget to breathe,” contortionist Noemi España said. “I’m concentrating so hard on what I’m doing, and I have to remember to breathe. Forget whatever happened in the show before and focus on what you’re doing now.

Whatever happened in my past performance happened, I learn from it. This is how I can move forward and do what I need to do.”

After the show, the audience was able to take pictures with the cast, offering the chance to, if even for a second, fulfill the dream of running away and joining the circus.

Though the circus may have packed up and headed out of town, it is sure to return to Mobile with new acts and a new story.

Beginning in 2016, Empowering Change has hosted several programs in Mobile. This included a community service event, an outdoor community day before a Jaguars home football game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium and a community panel discussion featuring award-winning journalist Soledad O’Brien.

Empowering Change co-chairs Melva Jones and Frye Gaillard said they joined the initiative to create a greater sense of inclusion in the Mobile community.

They also assisted in planning the aforementioned programs in addition to hosting after school programs for Murphy and Saraland High Schools with psychologist Janie Frane and sociologist Joel Lewis, respectively.

o a stranger, Mobile is just another town in southern Alabama, but at the heart of our city lies a diverse population, whose voices, for far too long, have not been heard.

This past year, the CEO of Community Foundation of South Alabama Rebecca Byrne asked Tony Waldrop, president of The University of South Alabama, to collaborate with organizations such as Mobile United, Austral, Springhill College, Bishop State Community College, Boys and Girls Club, The Community Foundation of South Alabama and the Office of Mayor Sandy Simpson to start the Empowering Change initiative. Multiple community leaders from each organization gathered together to decide on how to improve the future of Mobile. They concluded that the inclusion of people of various races, religions and ethnicities would be the best way to bring people together and move the community forward.

Thus, the Empowering Change initiative, supported by grants from the Newman’s Own Foundation and the County Commission of Mobile, was created.

Of Empowering Change, President Waldrop said, “A core component of the University of South Alabama’s mission is to make a difference in the lives of the people in the Gulf Coast region. When we were approached by the Community Foundation to partner on this effort, we immediately saw an opportunity to fulfill that part of our mission and to facilitate constructive conversations about the issues and challenges of our times.”

The leaders of various collaborating organizations echo the same sentiment.

Rebecca Byrne, president of the Community Foundation of South Alabama, said, “With the partnership of the University of South Alabama and the support of the city and the county, we are excited to build upon and complement the many efforts to foster an inclusive and welcoming community in Mobile.”

The vision for Mobile through the Empowering Change initiative is “to become a community in which all persons are welcomed, included, valued, respected and empowered to thrive and succeed,” according to their website.

This partnership in particular is important because of how diverse The Univerity of South Alabama is. We host a great number of students from other cities, states and countries. There is a constant need for inclusion of all types of people in order for the university to run properly.

During the community panel discussion, O’Brein remarked that “stories are more than compelling facts. People remember stories more than they remember statistics,” and his remark, in many ways, sums up the mission of the Empowering Change, because as an initiative, Empowering Change hopes to “serve as a catalyst to explore and experience different values, perspectives and backgrounds through a range of programs and service opportunities”.

Mobile is truly a diverse community with all different kinds of people living in it and contributing to it. There are people of every combination of race, religion, sexuality, ethnicity and upbringing who, together, make Mobile what it is.

Initiatives like Empowering Change are crucial to bringing together this community. In a time of such hatred and distance, it is important to realize that we have more in common with each other than we may think. Everyone can learn something from others. Get out and learn more about your community and your neighbors.

97.1 The Prowl, the voice of Jag Nation, is the University of South Alabama’s student-run radio station. We play a variety of music and talk programming.

JagTV is a volunteer TV station run entirely by students of the University of South Alabama. It broadcasts on channel 61.1 on the USA cable system available throughout the dorms and common places on campus.
