Dubrovnik Cathedral

Discover Cathedral of the Assumption

Damjana Jude 1 5

The Cathedral is the seat of the Roman Catholic diocese of Dubrovnik. Dubrovnik Cathedral is also known as the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. The local legend says the cathedral was funded by Richard the Lion Heart in the 1190s.

After being shipwrecked upon his return from the Crusades, Richard vowed to give money for a church building if his life was spared. The Cathedral was destroyed in an earthquake in 1667 and it was constructed again 1713. The treasury has a number of paintings of extraordinary value.

Sponza Palace

One of the most important buildings in the history of Dubrovnik

Stradun 2 7

Situated at the end of Stradun, this Gothic Renaissance style building was completed in the early 16th century. Don’t get it wrong, as palaces in Croatia do not refer to palaces for Kings and Queens, it was rather a residence for state offices including bank, treasury, armory etc. It was miraculous that this was yet another building almost undamaged in the severe earthquake in 1667. Today, Sponza is home to the State Archives and a Memorial Room of the Dubrovnik Defenders. The archive housed within its walls preserves priceless centuries-old documents and charters that track the entire political and commercial history of the Dubrovnik Republic. Visitors can also admire a famous Latin inscription on the courtyard arch, which famously warns merchants not to cheat with their weights, perfectly reflecting the high moral and legal standards of the old city. The courtyard is used primarily for various art exhibitions.

Konavle

Konavle features rich history, landmarks, and cultural treasures.

Gundulićeva poljana 1, Ston ·

The rich, layered history of Konavle unfolds through its monumental heritage, stretching from prehistoric Illyrian mounds and ancient Mithraic shrines to medieval tombestones and the UNESCO-listed St. Barbara site. The region’s strategic and economic value peaked in the 15th century when it was acquired by the Republic of Dubrovnik, a legacy still visible in the Rector’s Palaces of Pridvorje and Cavtat, the imposing Sokol Grad fortress, and the historic watermills on the Ljuta River.

This period of prosperity under the Dubrovnik Rector established a unique blend of civic organization and architectural grandeur that defines the landscape to this day. In Cavtat, this cultural wealth is further highlighted by the birthplace museum of the great painter Vlaho Bukovac, the masterfully sculpted Račić family Mausoleum by Ivan Meštrović, and the extensive art and legal collection of Baltazar Bogišić housed in the 16th-century Rector’s Palace.

Deeply woven into the identity of its people, Konavle’s centuries-old traditions, customs, and distinctive stone architecture continue to captivate modern visitors. This vibrant heritage is preserved and actively celebrated by the folklore ensemble KUD Čilipi, which has performed traditional dances and songs every Sunday since 1967.

Paired with the traditional folk costumes, intricate jewelry, and historical artifacts displayed at the Konavle County Museum, the region offers an authentic and enduring cultural story that attracts travelers from all over the world. By experiencing these living customs firsthand, visitors gain a deeper appreciation for the local community’s fierce perseverance and profound connection to their homeland.
