Grey vs White Cement If you need to create the impression of light or depth, warmth or serenity, or even visually expand or contract an area, color serves as a powerful decorating tool.

The base material of any paver is cement which comes in two distinct colors, namely white or grey. In an effort to customize pavers to suit our clients’ requirements, we offer all our standard colors in both grey and white cement.

Subtle hues or darker tones - the choice of color is dependent on the application of the paver and the effect you are striving to achieve.

Face vs Full Color All pavers at DUCON are provided in both face color (depth of 10 mm) and full color. In the former, the face mix which contains high-quality pigments is about 10mm thick while in the latter, the pigment is mixed all the way through from the face to the base.

DUCON is one amongst the very few companies that recommend the use of face color pavers as tests on our 30-year-old pavers indicate less than 1mm loss in surface area. If a paver loses an excess of 3mm, we treat this as a manufacturing default and at DUCON Industries, we offer a 30-year guarantee for our pavers as they are manufactured in compliance with industry standards and hence, are thick enough to offer a lifetime of wear.

Post-Installation Finishes 1. Minor Aged Finish DUCON Minor Aged Finish is a post-installation finish, i.e. the desired finish is achieved after installation of the pavers. This ultimately allows for a homogeneous look where the aged-effect is attained on the pavers in a truly natural manner.

2. Major Aged Finish DUCON Major Aged Finish is another post-installation finish where the desired effect is gained in a random manner. The effects are visible only on the upper surface of the paver which allows for a random natural aged-effect throughout.

3. Random Lined Finish Perceived as a more practical finish as opposed to being aesthetic, this is ideal for use in wet areas such as stables and cattle farms.

4. Rough Hammered Finish This post-installation finish is rough in appearance and extensively breaks the paver’s upper surface. It is recommended to use this with DUCON surface treatments to ease the cobblestone texture.

Treatment Traffic, water, oil and dirt can diminish the value and wreck the appearance of any paver installation. Regular maintenance is therefore essential to keep paving in prime condition.

At DUCON, we treat our pavers with great care to ensure their durability. All DUCON Treatments reduce the intrusion of water and the effect of stains, oils and dirt both on the paver surface and through to its base thus ensuring a very low maintenance cost for years to come.

Why do we need to treat our pavers?

Under foot and vehicular traffic, pavers are constantly exposed to the elements including dirt and stains. In order to address post-installation effects upon our pavers, we have formulated special treatments that help limit such effects, particularly that of efflorescence.

Efflorescence is the chalky white look that develops on many pavers from naturally occurring salts in the raw materials pavers are made from. This is not harmful to the pavers. However, if untreated, over time it could start to wear away the surface.

Given the dry weather conditions within the Arabian Gulf region, the whitish powder appears after a few water hose washes and tends to remain on the surface for many years. As long as it is kept under control, the effect of efflorescence will not cause any major problems.

This is a high-quality concrete sealer specially formulated to enhance the colors of pavers and seals by penetrating deeply into the concrete pores. It is designed to enhance paver colors without making the surface more slippery.

This is a high-quality wet-look paver sealer which lends a rich, glossy finish and satin appearance to your pavers. If you like the look of your pavers after a water wash, then you will certainly love the look and feel of DUCON Night Mirage and Sealer.

The Color Craze and Sealer is a matte-finish high-performance sealer. It is ideal for protecting and enhancing paved areas such as the edges of pool, patios, stairs and walkways. This is achieved through the oil-repellent sealant which, in combination with periodic cleaning, slows down the penetration of oil, grease and dirt and protects pavers against damage caused by water.

DEPS - DUCON Eco Paving System DEPS offers three product categories, namely DEPS Permeable Pavers; DEPS Porous Pavers and DEPS Grass Pavers that may be used individually or in combination with one another to achieve all 15 credits available through DUCON Eco Paving System.

DEPS PERMEABLE Pavers

PICP Permeable Interlocking Concrete Pavers Permeable interlocking concrete pavements (PICPs) offer an environmentally friendly way of providing long-lasting beautiful walkways and driveways.

1. Solid Spacer

PICP comprises a layer of solid concrete pavers separated by joints filled with small stones or grass. Three options of spacer material are available namely; Solid Spacers, Fine Permeable Spacers and Coarse Permeable Pavers.

3. Coarse Permeable Spacers

All three are available in “Cross” form or in a “T” form. The choice of form is influenced by the pattern and shape to be installed. For example, all stacked bond patterns require a “Cross” form.

DEPS POURS Pavers

DEPS Porous Pavers are the most versatile of all green solutions. It offers the possibility to produce all the standard paver designs and re-arrange in varied possible patterns.

This product also has the ability to compatibly integrate with solid standard pavers for additional strength and achieve a design dimension not possible by any other means.

1- HFR DEPS Porous Paver

Through a special chemical formulation DEPS Porous Pavers is available in two significantly different options: 1- HFR DEPS Porous Paver: Washed-pavers look with High Flow Rate

2- MFR DEPS Pavers: Fine look with Moderate Flow Rate

DEPS Porous Pavers have a flow rate of approximately 2 (fine) to 4 (coarse) liters per second per square feet, with a void structure of 28% for the fine and 46% for the coarse.

Strength is in excess of 12 KN/mm2 for both.

Such pavers offer adequate permeability of flow rate for flood areas and in most wet regions, are required to cover a maximum of 10% of the total area in design.

These pavers offer an extremely high permeability rate and sufficient strength for low traffic/ low speed areas.

DEPS GRASS Pavers

Grass pavers is a unique approach to achieving an irrigation platform and a permeable paver solution in one, ultimately allowing for grass planes within the paver structure itself.

DEPS Grass Pavers may look similar to standard pavers but are very different. With a requirement to be increasingly resistant to the elements, DEPS Grass Pavers are specially formulated to resist irrigation water and sulfur, making it an ideal solution for light vehicle parking areas and park entrances or driveways.

Durable, strong and very innovative, DUCON Grass Pavers is truly a versatile product that may be utilized in achieving many USGBC LEED points at an economical level.

DEPS INTEGRATED Design.

The typical design featured through “DEPS Integrated Design” may be suitable for the majority of projects within the Arabian Gulf region. Although all three systems are able to achieve all 15 credits individually, the project’s LEED® Accredited Professional may further choose to enhance an individual credit requirement by mixing and matching the different DEPS categories. While DEPS Permeable Pavers is able to minimize runoff thus capturing the majority of Total Suspended Solids at origin, DEPS Porous Pavers can gain maximum water quantity capture control and DEPS Grass Pavers is able to further reduce heat island effect and contribute towards water-efficient landscaping.

Stormwater Design: Quantity Control (SS 6.1) One Point

infiltration of excess water at peak seasons. Again such permeable pavers may further be incorporated to allow for greater water penetration without compromising on the general aesthetics of the project.

The intent of this credit is to reduce or limit the storm water runoff rate and quantity to minimize impact on natural hydrology. DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) achieves this objective by essentially limiting the disruption of natural water hydrology and reducing impervious cover, thereby increasing the on-site filtration and reducing or eliminating pollutants from storm water runoff. The USGBC requirements for the above differ for sites that are undeveloped and those that are developed. Both scenarios may best be described as follows.

Under the surface details of the designed bedding, typically 50 mm thick layer of open-grade aggregate and base consisting of open-grade aggregate supported by a sub-base may be provided. Besides storing water, this high infiltration rate layer provides a transition between the bedding and sub-base layers. In addition, the perforated pipes at the bottom of the sub-base also allows for collection. To achieve further points water collected through the perforated pipes may be used for landscape irrigation and other non-potable uses in building. These are discussed in greater detail through relevant sections below.

Undeveloped sites typically involve water penetrating into the underwater table by more than half. The amount in this context refers to the peak discharge rate and quantity for the one and two-year 24-hour design storm. In such cases, there are two options to achieve this single point offered by the USGBS Guidelines. The postdevelopment rate and quantity must be equal to or less than the pre-development values. Or the storm water management plan must include a stream channel protection and quantity control strategies. Essentially measures must be taken to prevent excessive stream velocities that result in erosion.

On the other hand, developed sites typically have water penetrating into the underwater table by less than half. In such cases, it is required to implement a storm water management plan that results in a 25% decrease in the volume of storm water.

This is to be calculated as described earlier above.

The good news is that DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) can help in both of the above scenarios, developed or undeveloped sites. DEPS is able to promote on-site storm water filtration. This is realized through the adoption of best practices within the field that enables it to achieve superior results.

Stormwater Design: Quality Control (SS 6.2) One Point Using acceptable best management practices (BMPs), DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) achieves Quality Control and consequently earns a further point in line with USGBC guidelines through the capture and treatment of 90% of average annual rainfall (13 to 25mm) and the removal of 80% Total Suspended Solids (TSS). This is done by reducing runoff through infiltration, which in turn reduces TSS and water carrying nutrients such as Total Phosphorous (TP). Moreover, due to the climatic conditions in the Middle East, and more specifically the Arabian Gulf region, this is typically achieved through our partners who provide mechanical treatment systems that confirm to USGBS guidelines and specification. Further information may be provided on request.

A typical design consists of paving units with openings achieved through DUCON’s high quality spacer system and then filled with small, open-graded crushed stone.

Spacers are supplied to fasten the pavers in a durable manner. The advantages of using such a system are that it allows for better results without compromising on the large array of paver designs on offer. Moreover, depending upon the required infiltration rate, the size of the pavers may also vary. Typically, small pavers would allow greater infiltration than large pavers. Further filtration may be achieved through DUCON Permeable Paver side water stoppers which allow for the immediate

Water-Efficient Landscaping (WE Credit 1) Two to Four Points

Heat Island Effect: Non-Roof (SS 7.1) One Point

In line with USGBC guidelines, two points may be achieved with a 50% reduction of potable water and four points may be achieved with 100% illumination of potable water. Water-efficient landscaping, innovation of waste water technology and water use reduction can all be accomplished in conjunction with the use of DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) by capturing rainwater to be used later for irrigation or grey water use, essentially limiting and in many cases eliminating the use of potable water.

The use of dark, non-reflective surfaces for walkways and other hardscapes contributes to the heat island effect by absorbing the sun’s warmth, which then radiates into the surroundings. Because of the heat island effect, ambient temperatures in urban areas are artificially elevated compared with surrounding suburban and undeveloped areas. The result is increased cooling loads in the summer, requiring larger heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) equipment and greater electricity consumption, both of which generate greenhouse gasses and pollution.

The latter is achieved through DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) by harvesting, filtering and transporting surface runoff into an underground reservoir. In addition, DEPS can provide some filtering of runoff from site surfaces through the aggregates in the bedding, base and sub-base.

The figure on the right provides a schematic diagram. An impermeable liner is used to capture the water within the DEPS base and sub-base.

As an option DUCON Industries has joint ventures with partners that may provide mechanical treatment systems to provide additional filtering as water exits the base and sub-base and enters a holding storage tank. This system may then be connected to a conventional pumping system to distribute water into the Landscape irrigation systems. In line with the USGBC LEED® Reference Guide, this system may also include a backup water supply should the stored water supply become depleted.

Therefore, DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) is designed to achieve the single point offered through the USGBC LEED® Reference Guide where the Heat Island effect, i.e. the thermal gradient differences between developed and undeveloped areas is reduced through the aesthetic design of pavers thus minimizing the impacts on microclimates and human and wildlife habitats.

The latter is achieved through DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) Lighter colored surfaces with a maximum of 29 Solar Reflectance Index (SRI) certified through the ASTM E 903, Standard Test Method for Solar Absorptance and Reflectance.

In addition, a further reduction to the island effect may also be achieved through an open-cell slab, which can be used for vegetation. This is achieved through the option to incorporate colestra paving system, ultimately allowing open grid permeability in excess of 50% of area in demand. Evapotranspiration from the grass provides cooling.

Concrete grid pavers are recommended for overflow or intermittent parking areas and aren’t intended where cars park regularly. Grids and grass will provide heat reducing benefits for these areas. Areas with regular parking should be paved with normal DEPS. Both colestra paving system and DEPS benefit trees by allowing air and water to reach roots.

Construction Waste Management (MR Credit 2)One to Two Points Construction Waste Management requires the diversion or salvaging of nonhazardous construction and demolition debris. To achieve this USGBC LEED® Reference Guide stipulates that at least 50% must be recycles/reused to achieve a single point or 75% must be re-used to achieve two points. To our advantage this calculation may be done by weight or volume. Moreover, USGBC LEED® Reference Guide recommends the development and implementation of a construction waste management plan that identifies the materials to be diverted from disposal and whether the materials will be sorted on-site or off-site. The crowded nature of construction in dense urban areas will almost always require collection of concrete in waste bins for shipment to off-site processing. Other projects may have sufficient space on the site to separate and process waste construction materials. It is therefore essential to establish goals for diversion from disposal in landfills and incinerators and adopt a construction waste management plan to achieve these goals.

In general, paver waste is 100% recyclable or may be donated. In order to achieve this requirement DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) is designed with crushed and reused concrete pavers on or off site as per the Waste Management Plan provided and reused as base material. To a further extent, concrete blocks used at the site may also be used as part of the base/sub-base for concrete pavers. There are two main advantages to use these materials within DEPS. Firstly, the laying of pavers is usually the final stage of the construction, thus it will allow for the largest amount of material to be re-used. Secondly, pavers and concrete products in general are very heavy (138 kg/m2 – 6 cm thick pavers). Thus, a significant proportion of the site’s waste materials may be realized through the re-used sub-base concrete fill. Through our experience with DEPS, crushed pavers at the sub-base level which are sieved and washed provide outstanding laboratory results.

Construction site Reuse Management (MR Credit 3) One to Two Points Construction site reuse Management requires the reuse of building materials and products in order to reduce demand for virgin materials and to reduce waste, thereby reducing impacts associated with the extraction and processing of virgin resources.

USGBC LEED® Reference Guide stipulates the use of salvaged, refurbished or reused materials such that the sum of which constitutes at least 5% (one Point) or 10% (Two Points), based on cost, of the total value of materials on the project.

DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) presented earlier in section 1.4.1 contributes towards this credit; including but not limited to crushing salvaged concrete pavers for reuse as pavement base material.

Recycled Content: The sum of post-consumer recycled content (MRc4) One Point to Two Points There is a growing amount of evidence that release of CO2 from combustion and methane gases contribute to global warming. For every ton of cement produced about a ton of CO2 is released into the atmosphere. To this extent, cement production comprises approximately 5% of CO2 generated throughout the world.

Replacing recycled content as stipulated by the USGBC LEED® Reference Guide requires the use of pavers with recycled content of 10% (One Point) or 20% (Two Points) based on cost. This requirements essentially promotes the use of building products that incorporate recycled content materials, thereby reducing impacts resulting from extraction and processing of virgin materials.

DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) is made with recycled materials or Supplementary Cementitious Materials (SCMs) that contribute to this credit. Essentially through in-depth experimentation, a portion of the cement was replaced by fly ash, a coal combustion by-product and silica fume, a by-product of silicon production. In the SCMs, the total cementitious material for DEPS exceeds 20%. Details of the product mix may be provided through project tendering.

To a further extent, recycled aggregate may also be ordered for masonry blocks to complement DEPS. This could be up to 40% by weight of pre-consumer recycled concrete cement.

Regional Material promotes the use of building materials and products that are extracted and manufactured within the region, thereby supporting the regional economy and reducing the environmental impacts resulting from transportation.

DUCON Industries is a certified member of USGBC LEED®. We are further pleased to inform our perspective customers of our independent in-house Accredited Professional Consultant, Eng. Basil Al-Farhan. In addition to his position as s board member of DUCON Industries, Eng. B. Al-Farhan has been the backbone of the progress of DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS).

In order to achieve this requirement, USGBC LEED® Reference Guide stipulates that based on cost, one point is achieved when the percentage of local material is 10% or greater, and two points when the percentage of local materials is 20% or greater, where the distance to qualify as local is that of a material extracted, processed and manufactured regionally within 500 miles or 804 kms.

Within many of the Arab Gulf cities shown below, DUCON Eco Paving System (DEPS) is able to earn this credit since most extraction of cement, aggregate and sand from quarries and the manufacturing plant is within 15 km of the manufacturing facility.

Installation Manual At Ducon Industries we believe that proper installation is a vital factor that contributes to the success of your project.

Choose the paver shape and determine total number of pavers needed. Refer to specific paver dimensions or use the technical section from page 158 onwards.

Through best practice research, we present a seven-step process, essentially paving the path towards a successful installation.

To estimate the amount of bedding sand required, follow these steps: Measure the area covered under the pavers and divide this by 200. (One ton of loosely graded aggregate covers 200 square feet at 3.5 cm thick loosely graded aggregate and will compact approximately 25 per cent). This will give you the amount of aggregate required in tons.

Step 1: Plan

Calculate the base material required. Patios and walkways require a 12 to 18 cm thick base. Driveways should have 24 to 36 cm thick base. In calculating the area to be covered, add 15 cm to the edges that are not adjacent to a structure to allow for the edge restraint to be fastened.

Calculate the required woven geotextile fabric. The geotex goes down before the base on top of the compacted subsoil and extends up the sides of the excavated area.

Therefore make sure that you measure the horizontal area the geotex will cover and add onto that the vertical cover required.

Step 2: Excavate Check the slope. The ground to receive the base and concrete pavers should drain away from the house. There should be at least a 2% slope away from the house.

Start by drawing a diagram of the area you want to pave, noting any existing structures such as buildings, boundary walls and other paved areas. Your local DUCON Industries distributor can help you determine the best paver and the proper amount of supplies you need. Plan to slope the paving away from the buildings in the direction of normal drainage. Make sure that you have 90º corners at your starting point.

Remove existing sand and soil using flat shovels. Make sure you compensate for the paver height of 6cm, 8cm or 10cm depending upon the paver thickness and the gravel bedding and base as recommended above.

Measure the Area. Determine the amount of materials needed, (length x width) for the area you want to pave. Mark the area on the ground using spray paint or a garden hose to mark the edge of the pavers. Measure each area and add them together for the total area. Add an extra 15 cm to the outside and calculate a second area for the base. This will be the area to excavate for the base since it will extend past the edge of the pavers.

Place the geotextile on the compacted soil. Cover the compacted soil with the geotextile and turn it up along the sides of the excavation. It can extend beyond the top.

Step 3: Install the geotextile and base

Place and rake the base smooth over the geotextile. Make sure the base material is moist, but not soaked with water. Place about 2 inches, rake it smooth and compact it with a plate compactor. Place another layer and rake it smooth. Pull string lines over the base set at the final surface elevation and slope of the surface.

Compact the loose base layer so that there is about a 10cm space between the string line and the top of the compacted base. Check the space with a measuring tape.

Do this checking on the base with at least two string lines spaced over the base. This will leave enough space for the bedding sand and pavers based on a 3cm sand bed and 6cm thick paver.

There is usually a 25% reduction in leveling following compaction.

Step 4: Install the edge restraints The edge to be used is one of three, either a Kerb stone, Heal Kerbs or DUCON edge restraints.

Place edge restraint on the sides of the area to be paved and before compacting pavers into the sand bed, check that all edging is fastened securely. Note: The edging goes on the base not on top of the sand.

Step 5: Install the bedding sand

Continue to screed bedding sand and place pavers on the sand while maintaining consistent joint widths. String lines will help keep pavers straight. Cut pavers as needed to fill in at the edges next to the border course. Use a diamond blade to cut the pavers.

Warning: The use of a splitter will almost always leave a dirty job.

Place at least two pipes of 5cm outside diameter directly on the base. Place them several feet apart and parallel to each other. Spread the sand between the pipes.

Use a shovel and rake to smooth it out. The sand should be moist but not wet or saturated. Use a straight piece of wood (2x4) to screed the sand smooth. This involves pulling the wood across the pipes several times until the area of sand is perfectly smooth. Remove the pipes and fill the indentations with sand.

Warning: Do not walk on or disturb the screeded and leveled sand.

Step 6: Install the pavers Start at the corner. It should be a square, that is, 90°. Place a border course around the entire edge, then place the pavers in the desired pattern. See pattern and border pages in the Technical Section for reference.

Step 7: Compact the Pavers Compact the pavers using a rubber plate compactor. Make at least two passes over all the pavers, starting at the outside of the pavement and working around the edges toward the inside. Then compact back and forth.

Spread dry joint sand over the surface and sweep some into the joints. Vibrate and compact the sand into the joints, sweeping and compacting as you go. Filling the joints with sand will take several passes with the plate compactor.

DUCON Industries offers a great range of products to clean, seal, remove efflorescence and stabilize the joint sand (great for random patterns with large joints). Sealers will keep out weeds and ants, and make stains easier to remove.
