Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic college-preparatory high school for girls of all faiths and backgrounds, is a member of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools in the United States and Canada. A Letter From the Head of School
MODERNIZING TRADITION Hello Friends, In late September, we had our all-school reunion and were so pleased to have over 300 women present at the wine and cheese party, alumnae mass and/or the luncheon. We celebrated class reunions ranging from five to 70 years and even had an honorary graduation for the College class of 1969 who were displaced in 1968 when the college closed (story on page 25). The entire weekend was filled with energy, love, laughter, and endless stories.
2019-2020 School Year Prayer Err on the Side of Love Some people can seem unreasonable, irrational, or self-centered. Love them anyway. Some people can seem stubborn, different, or confusing. Love them anyway. If you are kind, some may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Love them anyway. The love you share today will often be forgotten, overlooked, or erased. Love anyway. For when you err on the side of love, you illuminate God’s presence in the world.
Prior to the weekend festivities, I reviewed the list of attendees and thought about Duchesne over the generations. How much the world and the role of women in the world has changed, and how brilliantly the RSCJ evolved to ensure Duchesne women from every era received an excellent, well-rounded education relevant to the times. Today, Duchesne Academy has 338 young women enrolled from 46 different zip codes and 69 children in the Preschool. This growth has been gradual and exciting. With more students we can offer more electives, honors and AP courses, create more clubs, increase the number of choirs, and be competitive in Class B sports, just to name a few things. We are evolving our education yet are always committed to remaining a strong Sacred Heart community. As a reminder of this, I have an antique “clicker” sitting on my desk next to my modern MacBook Pro computer (see image on the cover.) The juxtaposition of these two items reminds me to look ahead while being rooted in our traditions. Err on the Side of Love:
A reflection on this year's school theme The following excerpts are taken from Mr. Scott Quinn’s reflection given at the senior commissioning prayer service in August.
O
ur theme this year is “Err on the Side of Love.” The Gospel from Luke of the Good Samaritan is, without a doubt, one of my favorites. The Samaritan, an outsider and perhaps even someone who could be vilified in the minds of Jesus’s audience, treats this complete stranger with kindness and love. Jesus’s message to them, and thus us, is to do the same: to treat others with love. This all takes place in a time and culture that is far different from our own, however, so I wanted to share a more relevant parable of my own. As some of you may know, I have a daughter named Lucy. She is only three years old, but she has already become quite the master negotiator… constantly trying to use logic and reason to strike better bargains for herself. Fairly recently we were at a party where they had an assortment of different desserts. After dinner, she asked if she could have one, and I responded that she could go and choose ONE. She returned with two cookies. So I said to her, “Lucy, I said you could pick out one, I’m going to need one of those.” She looked at me for a few seconds, looked at the cookies, then took a bite out of one cookie and then quickly took a bite out of another. As I was working out how to express my disappointment and frustration, she handed me one of the cookies and said, “Here you go, Daddy. This one tastes better.” St. Ignatius posited a spiritual ideal called “positive intent.” It essentially states that we should, whenever reasonably possible, assume the best of another. No
matter who you are, how experienced you are, or how knowledgeable you think you are, there is grace and sensibility in delaying judgement. I find that so much sadness and pain can be prevented by simply asking another question. Instead of assuming that my daughter was trying to sneak an extra dessert, if I delay my judgement, I can recognize she is actually being generous. In the spirit of this year, I invite you to give others the privilege to explain themselves. Remember that what you see may not be the reality–or that there may be more than one reality. This does NOT mean that others are always right, or that others are always nice, or kind, or loving. There is injustice, malice, and wrongdoing in the world. And, as men and women of the Sacred Heart, we are explicitly compelled to stand against it. We are called to stand in solidarity with the marginalized, and to be good stewards of creation. We are called to respect the life and dignity of every human person. Our unique challenge, and really our invitation with this year’s theme, is to do all this–to live out the Goals and Criteria—while erring on the side of love. It is no small task and, moreover, it is not something that we can do and check off a list. It is a life-long pursuit. It is a goal that requires a conversation of mind and of heart. And it begins in the small, seemingly mundane moment of life. So as we leave the Chapel today, I invite you to seize those moments in your day when you can assume the best of one another and of yourself. For when we err on the side of love, we illuminate God’s presence in the world.

PLANTING THE SEEDS OF S.T.E.A.M. EDUCATION
I
t’s full “STEAM” ahead at Duchesne Preschool this year. Teachers took a six-hour workshop this fall on how to better incorporate science into the curriculum. What a “blast” (literally – we blasted off rockets) we all had! Inspired by this workshop, we ordered a wide variety of science materials, books, and equipment to add to our present science, technology, engineering, art, and math activities.
CELEBRATING 20 YEARS
O
n June 2, over 150 past Duchesne Preschool families came back to visit the place where their education foundation was established. They toured the classrooms, visited with the teachers, and laughed at how tiny everything looked! The biggest surprise was when they saw the miniature toilets and low sinks in the bathroom and swore they were never that little. Our oldest Preschool alum who returned for this celebration was Jack Wilson, who is now in his second year of law school at Denver University. We received many notes and survey responses from young adults who attended Duchesne Preschool as far back as our first preschool class in 1999. One of these alums, Charita Jolynn Dailey wrote, “I believe my preschool experience set a solid foundation for my love and continued pursuit of higher education. I just began my fourth year at Ohio State University and plan to continue on to either graduate school or law school. I believe the life lessons to always stay curious and never stop learning began in preschool. Even with a structured curriculum, we were offered a great amount of exploration at Duchesne, and I believe that carried over into my adult life.” It was so gratifying to see these “children” again and hear about their accomplishments, as well as visit with their parents. When you plant the seeds of learning, of kindness, of service – in children who are young, you never know if it will take root and grow. At this special reunion, we certainly were blessed to see that not only did it grow, but it also flourished! 6 DUCHESNE TODAY
The PK class began the year with a fascinating unit on bees where students learned to build hives, gather nectar, explore the habits of bees and why they are so important, and try on a REAL beekeeper suit. The children in the extended care program planted seeds and transferred their seedlings into rock wool pods to put them in our tower garden, a six-foot-tall structure with a water reservoir. Seedlings grow in the rock wool without soil, and their roots are automatically watered every 15 minutes. The children will eventually eat the beans, lettuce and broccoli they have planted. Children are also learning the scientific method and spending time investigating, observing, planning, experimenting and discussing their outcomes to see how they could do an experiment differently the next time. As they build with a variety of items, the beauty of this program is learning that failure is ok. Sometimes their creations fall, their experiments do not succeed, and they have the opportunity to learn from this and to think about how to things differently. Full STEAM ahead for these three to five-year-old children at Duchesne Preschool!

JOJO SIWA: PRESCHOOL ALUM TURNED WORLDWIDE SENSATION
W
hen little JoJo Siwa started Duchesne Preschool at age three, it was clear that this child was destined to do something remarkable. In her signature pigtails and big bows, JoJo exuded kindness and confidence and loved to perform. She was bubbly, smart, and always included others. With all of her talent and joy came genuine humility, a credit to her parents and older brother, Jaden, who also graduated from Duchesne Preschool. Today, JoJo tours the country making 89 performance stops on her D.R.E.A.M. tour, singing, dancing, and spreading her message of anti-bullying, kindness, be yourself, and include others. JoJo has a talent deal with Nickelodeon, a YouTube following of over 10 million grade-school and preteen children, and products bearing her image at Target, Walmart, Claire’s, Amazon, and countless other retailers. She signed her first merchandising deal with Claire’s in 2016 and has since sold more than 35 million of her signature hair bows, which she and her mom first began making and selling from their Omaha home. We are so proud of JoJo and all she has accomplished, and the children especially love when she comes to town and visits her old Preschool! Très Bien, JoJo!

FAMILY TIES While there is always a smattering of faculty and staff who have children at the Preschool and Academy, this year the number seems to have hit a new high! Several faculty and staff in the Academy have a daughter, or even a granddaughter, who are wearing the Fairmont plaid of the Academy or red gingham of the Preschool for the 201920 school year. And of course, we can’t forget our Preschool boys, who, while not wearing gingham, certainly round out our family crew! We really ARE family at Duchesne Academy and Preschool.

For the second year in a row, the Academy will host parent cocktail parties for the parents in each class to get to know one another and chat with their daughters’ advisors and teachers. In August, freshmen parents gathered in the Fitz Gallery to meet for the first time as a group, and parents from the sophomore and junior classes combined to socialize in early October. Senior parents will converge in the spring for one of their final events before graduation. At each cocktail, the room was full of delicious snacks, laughter and a lot of love for Duchesne. REFUGEE: an all-school focus by laura hickman
T
his fall, the Academy community experienced reading Alan Gratz’s book, Refugee. The story follows three young teens through their experience of fleeing violence and upheaval in their home countries and their desperate attempts to find safe shelter in another. Mahmoud is a 14-year-old Syrian living in Aleppo with his parents and baby sister in 2015; Isabel is a 13-year-old Cuban girl whose family seizes their government’s surprise relaxation of the border in 1994 by boarding a rickety fishing boat along with their neighbors to cross the Caribbean to Florida; and Josef is a 14 year-old Jewish boy coming of age in Germany in the 1930s. His family is relieved to get passage on the St. Louis, a liner making its way to Cuba. Though a work of fiction, the story of each child is an amalgam of the true stories of hundreds of others who made the same journeys. To fully explore the experience of modern refugees, teachers have planned many classroom activities. In science, students explore the changing climate that has forced many modern refugees to leave their homes; the choir has selected music from the homelands of many refugees; the art students will incorporate the journey stories of migrants using shoes in their creations (look for these on the
centerpiece of each table at the motherdaughter event in November!); in social studies, students will explore the economic and political upheavals forcing families to flee their homes, as well as the international declaration of rights for refugees, and the status of refugees in countries around the world. As a school community, we have worked with Lutheran Family Services to sponsor a refugee family throughout their first year in the United States. The family is Karenni and comes from the Ban Mai Nai Soi Refugee Camp. The parents are in their late 30s and have three children: a 17-year-old son, a 14-yearold daughter, and a 10-year-old son. In late September, a crew of Duchesne students and adults spent a day cleaning and preparing the apartment provided to the family and a day moving donated furniture and supplies into the home. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the furnishings! The family arrived on Friday night, September 27 and a group of Duchesne students greeted them, along with a large number of their family who had already come to Omaha. In the coming months, a small cadre of Duchesne students will visit weekly to provide additional assistance for the family’s transition.
Refugee is a timely and powerful fiction that gives insight into the very real struggles faced by refugees on their journeys to safer lives.

Sustainability : DUCHESNE HOSTS network summer service Project by kim kreis
D
uchesne Academy hosted a Network Summer Service program June 23 through June 28. Eight girls attended from Sacred Heart schools in Boston, Maryland, San Francisco, Chicago, and New York. They came here to learn about sustainability, focusing on its many scales. At the personal scale, students made compost bins, did a waste audit of their trash for the week, and prepared a meal after shopping for sustainable items in the grocery store. Alumna Stacia Kulas Hoover A90 spoke to the girls about how she aims to have a waste-free home and the steps she takes to accomplish this. At the medium scale, Duchesne community members demonstrated all the things the Academy is doing to be more sustainable and gave many concrete examples for our guests to take back to their schools and implement. The group also took field trips to The Big Garden, Open Door Mission, and the sustainable product store Exist Green. The large scale of sustainability was represented by many tours 10 DUCHESNE TODAY

of local organizations including Hillside Solutions to see how metro-wide composting is accomplished, Offutt Air Force Base, focusing on the sustainable aspects of their flood cleanup, and a “farms experience day” where students stopped at a local dairy farm, a pig farm, and a corn/soybean farm. We also learned about energy in all forms with a visit to Tenaska, an energy company. Even with all of this work and learning, fun wasn’t forgotten! After a tour of the sustainable work going on at the Henry Doorly Zoo, girls got to explore the zoo on their own. We were thankful for the group of alumnae who sponsored our visit to a local country club for dining and swimming. The girls also enjoyed an amazing dinner at MCC’s Sage Bistro after touring the culinary program and the gardens that provide the food for the restaurant. After spending this week with Sacred Heart sisters from across the nation, I was reminded of how far Duchesne has come in our own sustainable journey and how proud we can be of our accomplishments. The visiting girls were so impressed by the

DUCHESNE: NOW POWERED BY THE SUN by eric krakowski With the flip of a switch, on September 27, 2019, Duchesne became the first high school in the city of Omaha to have an on-campus solar array designed to significantly offset energy usage with clean, efficient solar energy. Thanks to the generosity of donors, the 30-panel array and inverter were installed on the library roof by Interconnection Systems, Inc. of Central City, Nebraska.

size of our school and what we have been able to achieve. They also were adamant that none of their schools were doing as much with sustainability as Duchesne and were excited to bring back what they had learned to their communities. Finally, as the service trip organizer, I was amazed by the support we received from our Duchesne community. From bringing meals, to donating time to present some aspect of what sustainability means here at Duchesne, to smiling at Scott Quinn, Trisha Meehan, or me on the Friday before the girls left as we were all running on fumes, it all helped make a great week for all of the girls and adults involved. Depending on cloud cover and the time of year, it is estimated that the system will generate eight to 12 kilowatts of electricity at any given time during daylight hours. The electricity generated by the solar panels will directly power the STEAM lab, effectively taking this important student research and hands-on learning center “off the grid.” The 2200 square foot STEAM lab is home to 28 desktop computers, three 3D printers, four sewing machines, a 40-watt laser cutter, a CNC rotary cutting machine, two TV monitors, an LED projector, 20 overhead LED lights, and the lab’s HVAC system. During peak usage, the STEAM lab uses approximately four kilowatts of electricity. Not only will the new solar array fully power the STEAM lab, but it generally will produce enough electricity to offset usage in the library and surrounding classrooms on the second floor of the “college wing.” The system will also provide quantifiable data on energy production and usage in “real-time,” offering students the opportunity to collect data that can be used to monitor, research, and study the use of electricity firsthand. The installation of the new solar array highlights Duchesne’s ongoing commitment to its sustainability plan and provides an important first step in Duchesne’s goal to have “net positive building emissions by 2030.” Duchesne students, faculty, staff, and administration are excited to take this incredible step and are proud to be the sustainability leaders among Omaha schools with our pledge to always “Care for Creation and Future Generations.” FALL 2019 11

Unique Opportunities Abound at Duchesne The Room Where It Happened: "Hamilton" Master Class by Katrina Pierce, Music Teacher
The Nebraska High School Theater Academy is an organization dedicated to celebrating the power of the arts. This organization wants to support theater and music programs by connecting students and teachers with Broadway stars and music professionals. The academy offers access to master classes and virtual workshops with Broadway artists, live theater experiences, professional feedback on school performances, and confidence building through audition and performance opportunities. This year, 70 high schools are a part of the organization, including Duchesne. To kick off the school year, NHSTA teamed up with the Broadway show “Hamilton” to put on a voice master class. Nine Duchesne students had the chance to work with “Hamilton” star Elijah Malcomb who plays the characters John Laurens & Philip Hamilton. During the master class, the students worked on various vocal, acting, and audition techniques. Malcomb then answered many questions having to deal with his music background as well as being a part of the touring cast. Malcomb ended the class by singing a few lines from the production. Students took away many tips to help them in future concerts and productions and are looking forward to going back for the next Broadway master class. Sacred Heart Rising by Abby Jacobi A20
As I stepped off of our airport shuttle and gazed up at the archaic building that was to be my home for the next three days, I had no idea of the intent listening, critical thinking, and memorymaking in which I would soon take part. I had just arrived at a small retreat center in Maryland with Clare Kramper A20, Jackie Barnes A21, Sabrina Sulaymonova A21, and our wonderful guidance counselor, Ms. McOsker. We were ready to engage in a leadership conference called Sacred Heart Rising, a program intended to help build difference-makers of Sacred 12 DUCHESNE TODAY
Heart students and give them the resources and drive to better themselves and their communities. Along with 14 other girls and several administrators of the Sacred Heart, we found ourselves in a new place, full of complete strangers, but the love and welcoming spirits of all present radiated in the small conference room we were gathered in. Over the next several days, I made connections and built relationships with girls from Chicago, Boston, and Miami. We went on walks together, made hot chocolate, played volleyball, and stayed up late laughing hysterically. I began questioning the situation I was in because I was finding myself somewhat confused. How was it possible that 18 strangers were able to become friends quite literally overnight? I was puzzled. Then I realized what we all had in common: the Sacred Heart. Each of us had walked into the conference with open minds and the desire to make connections with girls that were part of our international sisterhood. It was that simple. Reflecting, I felt that my experience would have been so different if the participants were not from Sacred Heart schools. The difference, I began to understand, was that we too often close ourselves off and avoid the opportunity for a new relationship because we do not understand the true value of others. In Maryland, I already knew that the other Sacred Heart girls went to schools similar to my own, and I recognized that we all had a common goal: become stronger leaders and better our schools. I believe they subconsciously recognized similar things in my classmates and me, this being the reason we were able to form such a strong bond so quickly. When I meet new people outside of the Sacred Heart, I fear a lack of commonalities or make assumptions based on appearance, knowing nothing else about them. However, when we do this, we fail to remember the many similarities that all of us share. We are each on a journey, trying to maneuver through life facing both good days and bad and we are all children of God, made in His image, and made for a purpose. With this new attitude in mind, I walked away from the conference knowing it is my job as a Sacred Heart leader to teach others about the values bestowed on us by Saints Madeline Sophie Barat and Rose Philippine Duchesne. I had come to realize that the welcoming love I was shown at Sacred Heart Rising is not something I should only find through the Sacred Heart. It is something that I should see and spread everywhere I go. If we could all walk through our days with open minds and the desire to learn about others, the world would be a much brighter place.

This past summer, I was blessed with the opportunity to travel to France with 10 other Duchesne girls. This was the first time I would venture outside of the country, to a small town named Vichy, three hours south of Paris. We spent two weeks studying, exploring, and experiencing the culture of France. Each girl stayed with a family in Vichy, a town known for welcoming foreigners to France due to it being the home of Cavilam, an immersive school for French language learners. Most of us stayed with one other Duchesne girl within tour host houses, so we had company while navigating all of the unfamiliarity that comes with adapting to and experiencing a new culture. Every day, we would attend French classes in the morning, and the afternoons were full of learning more about the culture and history of France and its different regions. Going on cultural excursions almost daily, we learned how to make macaroons in a local bakery and visited Château de Chambord. We also traveled to Lyon for a day and had the opportunity to spend an afternoon in Charroux, known as the “prettiest village in France.” Being able to have a foreign experience as a teenager has been so impactful. It has taught me empathy and connection, problem solving and repetition, how to embrace differences and find unity, along with vulnerability and so much more. Being an American girl with limited French knowledge in a city full of people who barely knew any English taught me to empathize with people of different cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. Every day I would struggle to communicate with my French homestay mother or teacher or the inhabitants of Vichy, making a fool of myself and completely putting myself out there. In retrospect, I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I learned so much just by messing up and embarrassing myself -- being vulnerable, admitting that I need help, and accepting that it is okay to mess up is essential. I am so grateful that this trip has taught me to be vulnerable and empathetic with people- it’s how I’ve grown and connected with so many people since then and has given me a better understanding of the cultural barriers to communication.

by Kevin Van Winkle Duchesne has started a club lacrosse team! Women’s lacrosse is one of the fastestgrowing sports in the country, and its popularity in the Midwest is skyrocketing. It is not yet a sanctioned NSAA sport, but many local high schools have started club teams in order to serve the interests of student-athletes in their buildings. Duchesne decided to meet the demand as well and began a team this fall. At last count, close to 20 girls are playing on the team. Since it is a club sport, players can compete simultaneously in both lacrosse and an NSAA sport like cross country. The team practices twice a week in the mornings at Duchesne (the field has been lined for lacrosse) and then compete in a fall league and clinics on Sunday afternoons. Duchesne is one of seven teams in the league from Nebraska and Iowa. They will also compete in a larger league in the spring season. The team is coached by Duchesne parent Will Gilner (Sarah A21). Coach Gilner has a wealth of experience coaching women’s lacrosse, from the youth level all the way up to college athletes at Creighton University. The team is competing very well despite the fact that they are just beginning, and we look forward to watching the program develop!

ATHLETICS UPDATE
Game, set, match! That was the recurring theme for Duchesne's varsity tennis team this past spring. In "take no prisoners" fashion, the squad capped their (15-1) regular season with a wide-margin victory in May at the Nebraska Class B State Tennis Tournament. Runners-up in 2017 and 2018, Duchesne ended a 34-year dry spell, having last claimed the state title in 1985. Leading the way were Kate Krueger A19 at #1 singles, Abby Brewster A21 at #2 singles, Lesley Lam A19 and Meena Satpathy A21 at #1 doubles, and Jane Krueger A20) and Kiersten Capelle A20) at #2 doubles. With the added help of fellow teammates Mary Clare O'Connor A20, Bridget Duffy A 21, and Anna Kwong A21) the varsity crew charged their way past an early-season loss, winning the next 11 consecutive duals and four invites. Victories were against a variety of Class A and Class B opponents, including powerhouses Omaha Marian, Elkhorn South, Omaha Westside, Skutt Catholic, McCook, and Grand Island Central Catholic. All eyes now on 2020! Way to go, Duchesne!

I
walked into Duchesne’s Chapel last spring, almost 28 years after first entering as a freshman, to speak to the school community. I’ve been back a few times over the years, and I always think of the first day of my freshman year and the choir singing, “Prepare ye the way of the Lord” welcoming the new school year and welcoming me to the Duchesne family. Back then I had butterflies in my stomach as the music and repetitive lyrics filled the beautiful space where so many of us have come to feel at home. I was excited and nervous, juggling important information in my head: my locker combination, names of potential new friends, advice like, “Don’t take the brown stairs to the third floor.” (The brown stairs would take you to the nuns’ quarters, not biology class.) I exited the Chapel that day and pulled out my building map to guide me to my first class, history with Mrs. Hickman. (Second floor—it’s ok to take the brown stairs.) Back in 1991, Laura Hickman was an alum and brand-new teacher at Duchesne, a recent college graduate. I would be in her advisory group all four years. Fast forward to March 2019: Dr. Laura Hickman, principal, stood at the lectern at the front of the Chapel and introduced me to the students and staff. I was there to tell the story of my survival and the aftermath. It’s a story I can now tell the short way or the long, more detailed, and usually tearful way. Here’s the short way: In 2002, I was living in Texas, having just completed my second year of teaching first (Continued on page 16) FALL 2019 15
Academy News grade to children of enlisted personnel on the Army post, Fort Hood. Late one night, I was getting ready for bed when a stranger broke into my locked apartment. I was abducted at gunpoint, robbed at an ATM, raped, shot three times in the back, and left for dead alone in a large field. I was praying throughout. Hail Mary, full of grace… I asked God to give me clarity of thought so that I could see the way out. I played dead until my attacker had driven away in my car. I got up, naked and bleeding, and ran for help at a nearby subdivision. I collapsed on a doorstep and reached up to ring the doorbell over and over until the homeowner woke up and opened the door. He called 911 and tried to reassure me that I’d be ok. Police arrived, and paramedics soon followed. My life was saved in over six hours of surgery. My attacker was arrested about the time I was getting out of surgery. He will be in prison for a minimum of 50 years. My dad, Mike Kelly, who was the longtime columnist for the Omaha World-Herald, was the first to give me a public voice. He wrote about what happened to me in a series of columns. I felt compelled to share my story, especially when I realized that there was a stigma around being a survivor of rape. I learned that many were suffering silently, and I wanted to encourage them to talk about it as a way to begin healing. I believe that finding the right therapist for me was an important step on my journey to finding my “new normal.” Support of family and friends was essential, too. Many people told me they were praying for my recovery. At that time, it was somewhat rare for a sexual assault survivor to speak publicly, using her real name and image. In recent years, more and more survivors of sexual assault have come forward, inspiring others to share their stories and to get the help they need. I have found it especially moving to see older women sharing their stories, inspired by the courage of younger women speaking out. I hope we can continue to evolve as a society. The stigma of rape and sex abuse should be only on those who commit these crimes. Dr. Hickman had gathered a list of questions from the students that she asked me near the end of my talk. She referred to a story that my dad had told. He had somewhat bitterly asked way back then, “Where was God in all of this?” I had responded, “He was there holding my hand.” A student wanted to know how my faith had come to be a source of strength at that time. I had to think about it. I shared that Duchesne had been a place where the faith of my childhood had evolved to the faith of my adulthood. And that it has continued evolving throughout adulthood. Duchesne was a safe place for conversations around matters of faith. I 16 DUCHESNE TODAY

learned that it’s ok to doubt or disagree. All of that thinking helped me feel that I truly had a personal and active faith in God. Throughout my faith life, the constant has been my belief that God’s love is for all of us. I shared these experiences and thoughts in March in the Duchesne Chapel. I talked about telling my story in local and national media. I met my husband, an ABC News producer, along the way. We now have two amazing children and live in New York City. A lot has happened since that summer in 2002. The memories are so clear, sometimes like my attack wasn’t so long ago. But I looked out at the students gathered there and realized it happened before most of them were born! I was impressed by their apparent maturity, attentiveness, and thoughtful questions. I felt a bit like I knew them, my Sacred Heart sisters. We never know what’s around the next corner in life. After trauma, you sometimes feel like you’ve lost sight of the path you were on. You may feel confused and fearful, not knowing what will come next. You may wish you had a map to guide you, like I had in those early days of high school. I wanted the students to know a lesson that I have learned. That no matter what comes your way in life: you’re stronger and more capable than you think you are.

Hello Duchesne Alumnae! Thank you to all who attended the all-school reunion this past September. From recent Academy graduates to Duchesne College graduates, it was a great weekend of connecting with our Sacred Heart sisters, sharing memories and admiring the beautiful ways that Duchesne has changed over the years. This year, we honored our College 1969 alumnae with honorary degrees and had the opportunity to celebrate with several tables of Academy 1969 attendees! The Alumnae Board is delighted to welcome ten new members, bringing our total number of Board members for the 2019-2020 year to thirty. Throughout the year, the Alumnae Board plans and executes many events for our alumnae, including reunion, memorial Mass, holiday Mass and donuts with Santa, “Stuart”ship day, young alum yoga, marathon bridge and the passport breakfast for seniors. This year, we look forward to the inaugural professional networking event, which will be an opportunity for Duchesne alumnae to connect with each other in the professional world here in Omaha. If you have not already done so, please consider donating to Duchesne’s annual fund, lovingly renamed the Duchesne Fund. A portion of the annual fund supports the Alumnae Board in its many events. Each year the Alumnae Board contributes to the Sr. Mary Pat Ryan Endowed Scholarship which is awarded to the daughter of an alumna, carrying the tradition of Sacred Heart education on to future generations. CLASS NOTES Collette Kerr Shaughnessy C67 and her husband Mike recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary. The two met at the Duchesne College 1963 graduation of each of their sisters, Rose Ann Shaughnessy Kehoe and Linda Kerr Greeley. At their wedding in 1969, “Coeur de Jesus” was played on the pipe organ at St John’s church, and this year it again featured in their anniversary celebrations. Colette and her husband live in Denver, Colorado, and are parents of Meaghan, Bridget, and John and grandparents of Lily, Fiona, Elia, and Teshale.
This spring, Cathy Woods Hughes A64 received two honorary degrees: the doctor of commerce distinction from UNO and from Creighton University and the Phi Beta Kappa Society Chapter Beta of Nebraska – a new member initiation/honorary member induction into Phi Beta Kappa. While in Omaha, she also stopped by to speak to the students. She shared stories of her time as a student at Duchesne, her mentors in life, her successes, and her setbacks. Most importantly, she told our girls to find what they are passionate about and use that to constantly improve their lives.

After an extensive national search, the Board of Certification for the Athletic Trainer (BOC) has chosen Anne M. Minton A85 MBA its current chief operating officer. Anne assumed her new duties on May 1, 2019. She has been part of the BOC since 1998, beginning as director of operations before being promoted to assistant executive director (2007–2014), associate executive director (2014–2018), and COO (2018–2019). During her career with the BOC, Minton has been essential in several milestones for the organization. In 2008, she led the search and renovation of the organization’s national headquarters in downtown Omaha, Nebraska, and also established its downtown conference center, 1415-The Meeting Space. Her strategic leadership was instrumental in growing the staff to 19 full-time employees over the past 21 years.

Liz Dixon Lange A99 (below, left) recently launched a consulting firm, Liz Lange Consulting, to provide strategic advice to nonprofits and philanthropy. Based in Lincoln, Nebraska, the firm offers services in planning and strategy, research and communications, organizational and fund development, and facilitation and workshops. With 15 years of experience across sectors, Liz's professional and volunteer work includes fundraising for multi-million dollar projects, high-level strategic planning, and new program development.
Kelly Sampson Elliott A99 founded and launched her own experiential marketing and event production company this year. Her husband Erik is a partner in the business and together they have over 30 years of experience in the industry. They met while working together at a large decor, design, and production company in downtown Chicago. Their company name, SOPRICO, stems from 18 DUCHESNE TODAY

The two plan, design, and produce a spectrum of live events from brand activations, meetings, trade shows, board dinners to galas, VIP dinners, runway shows, and festivals. While they are based just outside of Chicago, Kelly and her team work all over the globe.
Dr. Kate Nelson Holthaus A11 recently graduated with her doctorate of optometry in May, 2019, from the Northeastern State University Oklahoma College of Optometry. While at school she met her husband, Dr. Jared Holthaus, and they now work together at a private group optometric practice in Omaha. Since stepping foot in Duchesne back in 2007 as a freshman, Kate has lived her life under the guidance of the five Goals and continues to do so in the way she practices her dream of optometry.
Katie Dixon DeSantis A96 and her husband and four children moved back to Omaha from the East Coast. Both left corporate positions to pursue their passion for health and wellness. In the past year, they have opened two superfood cafĂŠs in Omaha.
Kate Vazquez A10 recently published a novel The Generator, a work of speculative fiction. Currently, part two of The Generator is in the works, along with a prequel to the series. Professionally, Kate recently started a new position with Buildertrend and is actively involved in the community by volunteering with non-profits to assist in event and program coordination.
After graduating with the rest of her Duchesne class in 2014, Micaela Connolly A14 made her way to the University of Vermont to obtain her degrees in Anthropology and Spanish and a minor in Geology. She graduated from UVM in 2018, and from her Johns Hopkins Master’s program in 2019 Now, Micaela has recently started her Anthropology Ph.D. program at the University of Montana shortly after finishing her Masters in Museum Studies over the summer. In the past 5 years, Micaela has worked on archaeological digs and in museums and archives. With these experiences she decided to pursue her Ph.D. in anthropology with a focus in museums. She aims to work in the curatorial capacity in order to work towards addressing museum philosophical and paradigm shifts when she obtains her Ph.D.
2021 DUCHESNE ALUMNAE FRANCE TRIP Duchesne once again hopes to organize an alumnae trip to explore our Sacred Heart heritage in France. This trip will take place in early summer 2021 and include visits to the childhood home of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat in Joigny, the birthplace of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne in Grenoble, and numerous Sacred Heart sites around Paris. The last trip in 2017 included 10 days in France with additional stops in Amiens, Lyon, and Beaune as well as vineyard tours, wine tastings, many museums, and incredible dining. At this stage, Duchesne is simply gauging if there is enough interest to plan another trip. The trip is for adults only and is open to Duchesne alumnae and their spouses. YEARS LATER class of 1969 honorary degree ceremony
The following remarks were given by Kate Bradley C69 at the All-School Reunion on September 14, 2019.
"T
imes change and we must change, too, and modify our views." The wise words of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat.
In the course of living, we learn that CHANGE is an absolute constant in life. No matter how hard we try to hang onto or maintain the status quo, CHANGE will come and chase us out of our comfort zones. On February 1, 1968, an unanticipated CHANGE hit the young women of Duchesne College hard as the closing of our school was announced. There was shock, sadness, confusion, and probably some anger, too. There were tears and fears and so many questions. Big CHANGE loomed on the horizon for all of us! The year 1968 was a tumultuous one with assassinations, war protests, political upheaval, and riots in the cities. Add to the turmoil of '68 that we found ourselves almost college seniors without a college! Day by day, as Duchesne's final semester slipped by, each of us formed plans for transfer, and 1969 saw us graduating from Creighton, the University of Nebraska, the College of St. Mary, and Barat College of the Sacred Heart. So much CHANGE for each of us during our separate senior years. And now, to my amazement, here we are marking 50 years since our college graduations, and regardless of where we earned our different diplomas, all of us share vivid memories of Duchesne. Look around! Remember First Fridays here in the Chapel with all of us in our black academic robes and white gloves? Who can ever forget Mother Betty Boyter in a powder-blue habit and toe shoes performing a ballet to the melody of "Love is Blue" in the center aisle of this chapel? Did we really make it to 8:00 a.m. humanities classes daily for four solid semesters? I will never forget my dismay when Mother Madeleine Sophie Cooney passed out the blank “blue books” for a semester final exam and wrote just one sentence on the chalkboard: "Synthesize the 17 th century in terms of the history, art, literature, music, and architecture of the time." I felt pure panic, and to this day I never hear the word "synthesis" without thinking of the brilliant Mother Cooney. (I ended up majoring in humanities!)
How about the sophomore adventure of living here in the old building? Occasionally, a loose bat would cause some excitement, but do any of you remember the early evening of a formal dance when we were all getting ready, and a shower head broke causing a plumbing crisis with water shooting all over?! Within minutes, Judy Bearss's aunt, Mother Rosemary Bearss, came to the rescue with an apron tied over her habit. Armed with a big wrench, she fixed that shower–another brilliant RSCJ! And wasn't it fun hanging out on the roof of this building? Especially on the night of that silly springtime ritual when a crowd of Creighton guys gathered to make noise on the grounds to attract the attention of the girls hoping for some response from the roof. When that stunt was repeated the following year around Matthews Hall, our beloved housemother and receptionist, Mrs. Becker, broadcast a firm intercom warning throughout the dorm: "Girls! Girls! Get away from the 38th Street windows immediately and draw those drapes now!" Of course, any girls not already there rushed to get to those west-facing windows....and I wonder if the entire dorm may have actually tilted a bit to one side that night! Being college girls in the pre-computer and smart phone era, how did we ever manage our social lives sharing just two phones per floor? How about the paperwork procedures involved in getting signed out for Friday and Saturday nights? For the dateless, there were countless options for fun with friends like a night hike to the Blackstone for brownie sundaes...or bridge games...or earpiercing sessions...or endless serious and silly conversations. All these years later, laughter and learning still abound here at Duchesne Academy as the traditions of Sacred Heart education are alive and well. You will find young scholars, athletes, artists, musicians, and volunteers thriving here today midst a talented faculty who are dedicated to their education, personal development, and spiritual growth. To my 1969 classmates and all alumnae gathered here today, welcome home to Duchesne. Enjoy sharing your memories and friendships. Knowing from experience that CHANGE presents opportunity beneficial to growth, look ahead with us to a great future for Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart.

acred Heart educational traditions that began in France more than 200 years ago maintain their vibrancy at Duchesne Academy, their Omaha home since 1881. The names of those advancing that legacy grace the pages of this honor roll of donors, and I am pleased to note 1148 benefactors contributed in 2018-2019. As these pages testify, our position is very strong. Students, parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and friends join our mission and contribute to our positive outlook for enrollment, academic success, and financial vitality. We grew to this position because of ongoing support, and now it’s our responsibility to begin envisioning the Duchesne Academy of the future. As our strategic and master plan studies unfold, we are discovering transformational opportunities and travel a bold path to meet our aspirations. For certain, our strengths and opportunities far outpace our weaknesses and threats. With Love is Our Mission, we will reveal awe-inspiring possibilities. ur founding mothers, Saints Madeleine Sophie Barat and Rose Philippine Duchesne, and the Religious of the Sacred Heart who followed in their footsteps, have long been acknowledged for their forward-thinking, visionary leadership. Always one step ahead in planning for the future, they perfected their roles as loving “mothers” while navigating the pressure and responsibility that comes with being a business leader. To be sure, they were successful in their efforts due, at least in part, to the support they received from generous community benefactors.

Because of the RSCJ’s bold leadership, throughout the course of its nearly 140-year history, Duchesne has been the fortunate recipient of transformational giving, oftentimes family gifts, that positively impact the trajectory of our school’s campus or mission in one way or another. Three such families who made this unique caliber of commitment in the 50s and 60s still come up by name routinely, especially during alumnae gatherings. Remember the Foxley Building? How about Matthews Hall? And, we can’t forget the Regan Building, which currently houses our Preschool and athletic facilities. On Saturday, January 25, 2020, the Duchesne community will celebrate one of Duchesne’s oldest and best traditions, Congé! This year the theme for Congé is 2020 Vision: Celebrating the
Future of Our Girls.
Duchesne has been in existence since 1881 and, throughout the decades, the Religious of the Sacred Heart had a clear vision: to educate the whole child. Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne stated, “Strength of character is certainly needed to face life in the world and to stand by right principles, especially in the age in which we live.” Love is our mission, and Duchesne’s vision has held and continues to hold a brilliant future for confident women, those who have already passed through our door and those yet to come. Duchesne Academy and Preschool are proud to carry on Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s vision to “make known the love of God as revealed in the heart of Christ.” We celebrate Sophie’s desire to educate young women and her devotion to sharing the Sacred Heart of Jesus with others. Join us on January 25, 2020, to help us “build community as a Christian value” (Goal 4) and celebrate Duchesne! This year, Duchesne parents, Kate and Brian Brownrigg (Lauren A20), Liz and Tom Dervin (Sophia A21), and Melissa and Patrick Duffy (Bridget A21) are working hard to ensure that the evening a great success for the school.
