A Letter From the Head of School
LOVE IS OUR MISSION Dear Alumnae and Friends, Our school year began in mid-August when the temperature was high and the humidity higher. Our girls, with a few moans, despite our newly air-conditioned Chapel, wore their full uniform to our opening convocation, a tradition that began sometime after I graduated in 1983 and before I returned in 2015.
2018-2019 School Year Prayer A Prayer of Dedication to Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne - Kim King, RSCJ When we are asked to be bold and courageous, You are our inspiration. When our imaginations dream and see beyond the limits of our sight, You are our hope. When we fail to meet a challenge and need to accept our limitations, You are our model. When we pray with the desire for deep union with God, You are our Saint. And with your blessing, to the greater glory of God, we seek to be loving people who live and serve others with your same purpose, vision, and quiet humility. Amen.
On the first day of the school year, we invite our entire community to the Chapel to be called out by name and to hear, with sincerity, that our community would not be complete without the presence of each of us. As a school of the Sacred Heart, we believe that it is the loving plan of God that all of us are called here together, each by name, to share our life as we learn and grow, individually and together. Each one of us is unique and irreplaceable for the fullness of that life. We then read a passage from the Prophet Isaiah 43:1-3 in which we are reminded that God indeed calls each of us by name and loves and protects us, always. The theme for the school year is: Love is Our Mission. Sacred Heart education is defined by love. In a world that at times does not embrace this value, we find it extremely important to not only educate our girls about the power of love but to also allow them to experience it in all they do and who they are today. We want our impressionable young women to love themselves as God loves them. Another part of our year will be filled with the ongoing celebration of the bicentennial of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, a courageous woman who crossed many frontiers to bring Sacred Heart education to America in 1818. She serves as a model for all of us as we navigate a relatively new, unknown paradigm of a fast paced, high-tech world. Like Philippine, it is our hope that we all embrace life with perseverance, passion, courage, and love. As I enter my fourth year as head of school, I thank God every day for Duchesne, Sacred Heart education, and for you. Sincerely,
Meg Huerter Brudney A83 Head of School 4 DUCHESNE TODAY
DUCHESNE PRESCHOOL
Celebrates
20 YEARS by sara wachter a73
I
n the fall of 1999, Duchesne Preschool welcomed 55 little children to a newly renovated building with a brand-new concept in early childhood education: the five Sacred Heart Goals, low student/teacher ratios, and the inclusion of specialist classes in art, computer, music, PE, and Spanish. Omaha had a few Montessori and church preschools, but nothing was offered like the curriculum of our Sacred Heart schools. Then, as now, our children wore darling uniforms of red/white checked dresses, embroidered with sacred hearts and the child’s name, and the boys wore navy pants or shorts with a white polo monogramed in red with their name. We lowered the Nebraska average student-teacher ratio by almost 50%, giving the children much needed individual attention, and enjoying integrating the big girls in the Academy whenever possible. It did not take long for word to spread that Duchesne Preschool was something special. Since our first Preschool children are now 24 and 25 years old, we look forward to them possibly sending their children to Duchesne Preschool in the not-too-distant future! Please mark your calendars for Sunday, June 2, 2019, for the 20th Anniversary Open House to help us celebrate this milestone. Additionally, we are currently in the process of trying to contact all of the children and teachers who attended or taught at Duchesne Preschool since 1999. If you know a preschool alum or past teacher, please ask them to email Ms. Sara Wachter at swachter@duchesneacademy.org. We are also gathering photos and artifacts from our 20-year history, and are so eager to reconnect with all those who helped make the past 20 years so special. FALL 2018 5

T
his fall the Preschool welcomed a 3-year old named Rose Philippine Kenny. Yes, she bears the name of our patron saint, Rose Philippine Duchesne, and it is not by accident. Her parents Tom and Danielle Kenny shared the sweet story of her name with us.
“Two days before Rose's birth, we were still undecided, but then Providence spoke, through the medium of Dad's Saint of the Day email--which popped up with the name Rose Philippine, on her Feast Day. As soon as we saw it, we knew that would be her name. It was perfect: it honored her grandfather (Phil), her grandmother (Jean, a 1954 Duchesne College grad), her great Aunt Roseanne (Aunt Rosie, who also attended Duchesne in the late 1940s), and it honored the wonderful saint that we grew up knowing,” said Danielle. She goes on, “Duchesne has always been a big part of our family. It is a genteel and sacred place in an increasingly hectic and secular world. The RSCJ have always been part of our lives, including our dear friend ‘Sister Fitz,’ who actually met Rose in Okoboji the summer before she died (see right). Sr. Fitz and Rose's ‘nana’ were college roommates and lifelong friends.” When asked if little Rose Philippine knows the significance of her name, her dad Tom responded, “She's learning, and she knows it is a saint’s name.” Her mom added, “She has recently started saying she is ‘Rose Philippine’ and emphatically stomps her foot when she says it!”

his fall we welcomed four new teachers to Duchesne Preschool.
Anne Raynor is no stranger to Duchesne as her three daughters all graduated from the Academy. She is the art assistant and loves guiding the little ones through the exploration of art. Kerri Kubat is a former teacher, and her daughter is a Preschool alum. Kerri brings great energy to the PK team! Colleen Johnson is back at Duchesne for a third time! She is an alum of the Academy class of 1993 and then returned as a parent when her two daughters, Isabella and Jacqui, attended the Preschool. This year she returned again as a teacher in the Preschool and the mother of a Duchesne Academy freshman. Colleen is happy to be “mothering” the little ones in the nursery classroom.

Duchesne Faithful Make Sugar Creek Pilgrimage by Laura mckee hickman a85

n 1841, after an arduous journey by boat and covered wagon from St. Louis, four RSCJ, including 72-year-old Philippine Duchesne arrived at the Potawatomi reservation of Sugar Creek just outside Mound City, Kansas. They were greeted by 260 Potawatomi mounted on horseback in gala dress, plumes and moccasins, and with bright red circles painted around their eyes. This moment marked the fulfillment of Philippine’s life-long dream to work with the Native American people. Less understood by Europeans is the story of the Potawatomi arrival at Sugar Creek. Rounded up at gun point from their homes in Indiana, the tribe had been force-marched for 10 weeks across five states to Sugar Creek. Approximately 62 died on the march, most of them young children that were buried and left along the trail. The government promised them a new home

at Sugar Creek, but upon arrival in November, they found no homes and no provisions. They survived by huddling in the rocks along the river. Fast forward 200 years and the memory of Rose Philippine has been kept alive by the Potawatomi and cherished by the descendants of their Trail of Death. Every five years the Trail is reenacted by caravan, and this year that reenactment arrived at Sugar Creek on September 22. Nineteen members of the Duchesne Academy and Preschool—teachers, students, alumnae– joined the celebration of life and hardship in a very special mass on the site of the church built by the Potawatomi. We walked in St. Philippine’s footsteps and prayed where she earned her Native name “Woman Who Prays Always.” Most powerfully, we did so with the peoples that Philippine loved best.

DUCHESNE HOSTS GLOBAL DAY OF SERVICE focusing on Food insecurity
n September 14 and 15, Duchesne Academy along with the Religious of the Sacred Heart, Associates, students, and alumni of the Network of Sacred Heart Schools celebrated Global Day of Service. The event overlapped with the 200th anniversary of Rose Philippine Duchesne opening the first Sacred Heart school in America. The school, which opened in St. Charles, Missouri on September 14, 1818, officially marked the Society an international order. Inspired by an image of Philippine with a map on her lap, the Society’s bicentennial planning committee asked Sacred Heart communities around the world, “If Philippine were here today, what would attract her, where would she place herself, and/or where would she yearn to serve?” At Duchesne, the focus of service was about food and food insecurities. All students attended a keynote from John Levy, from the Omaha Community Foundation, who spoke about the importance of philanthropy and the need for service and justice. Then students broke up into small groups to go to various activities around the school and our neighborhood. Students 10 DUCHESNE TODAY

experienced either a cultural simulation to help create dialogue and the importance of perspective or a SNAP food simulation to understand how much food could be purchased on the SNAP program. Small breakout sessions included information about the farm bill and laws, creating clay bowls for the Empty Bowls initiative at Creighton University, food packing for refugee families at Yates Community Center, organizing food for Operation Others, learning about food waste and the importance of composting, an immersive literacy experience of culinary poetry, and collecting food at our neighbors' homes in the Gifford Park Neighborhood Association. During lunch, our community gathered for a hunger awareness meal. Every person was randomly divided into one of four groups: poor, working class, middle class, or rich. Participants were served a meal one might eat as a member of that group. The poor ate a simple meal of rice, beans, and corn. The middle class meal consisted of cheese pizza, salad, juice, watermelon, and small cookies. The working class meal consisted of the same as the middle class, but with larger

desserts and wider drink selection. The pizza was purchased from Table Grace Café in downtown Omaha that has a "pay what you can" model. The café's mission is "to foster a healthy community by offering great food prepared and served in a graceful manner to anyone who walks through the door." The rich meal consisted of beef tenderloin, potatoes, corn, watermelon, salad, bakery fresh cupcakes, and a selection of drinks. Four students who represented 1% of the population, dined at a set table with linens and served by two waiters. This was an eye-opening experience for all. Grace Porter A19 shared her experience as being one of the few selected to represent the rich. Our entire community prayed in thanksgiving for Philippine who saw a need to open a school 200 years ago and served the children the way she knew best.

GLOBAL DAY OF SERVICE STUDENT REFLECTION by Grace porter a19 Before I got to school that Friday, I honestly wasn’t looking forward to the day. It didn’t sound fun to me, and I was kind of dreading it. But the whole day, and especially the lunch, was an eye-opening experience. I was chosen as one of the 1%, those who got to partake in the “rich meal” for the day. The awkwardness started immediately after we were told to get up and leave the chapel. Only four of us had to walk past the entire school and the teachers who were standing in the hall. At first when all the other students started coming down from the chapel and staring at us at our set table complete with linens and china, people were just laughing at the fact that we were the “lucky four” that got the best lunch. Then people started coming over and checking out our food, basically drooling over it. I felt even worse knowing that we had so much amazing food, and some other people only had rice and beans. It made me feel so detached from everyone. Although I had all this amazing food sitting in front of me, it was pretty awkward. When teachers started telling us we weren’t allowed to give food out to others, all I could think about was how symbolic it was: just a few people eating plentiful food and dozens of people surrounding them, begging for just a bite. Something else that struck me was a comment one of the teachers made during lunch pointing out that while we were continuing to sit and eat and talk, all the other students had quickly eaten and left their seats. It made me think about how the upper class is able to have more leisure time while the lower classes do not have that luxury. Even after I had left the table and gone back to find my friends, it felt like there were so many eyes on me. People asked me what kind of food I ate, and although I know they weren’t trying to make me feel bad, I couldn’t help but feel guilty about the differences in our meals. So even though I knew about poverty and hunger in the world before this day, the hands-on experience of the hunger awareness lunch helped me to get a new point of view on it, and it made me want to do more. I have been thinking about Global Service Day since the experience, trying to come up with ways to make even a small difference. I definitely had some preconceived notions about the day beforehand, but it ended up being one of the highlights of my year.

Duchesne serves up a new lunch program
T
he new lunch program at Duchesne, envisioned by Scott Quinn, theology teacher/retreat coordinator, and Jacqui Caniglia, former portress and Duchesne parent, focuses on six goals: increased sustainability, reduction of waste, excellent taste, nutritious selections, educational outreach, and affordable prices. The program is endearingly named "Sophie's Kitchen" after Madeleine Sophie Barat. Because a sustainable food program was already set as one of our larger goals as a school, Scott and Jacqui have been extremely committed to our partnership with local vendors (primarily Lone Tree Foods and Plum Creek Farms) to purchase local produce, dairy, meat, and other products as much as possible. Even closer to home, they have also been using the harvest from our school garden: kale, tomatoes, onions, peppers, cucumbers, butternut squash (dozens and dozens!), strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, and much more.
The team has and will continue to create menus that correspond to what is in season, being intentional about the sourcing and amount of meat that is offered. For example, whole chickens are bought and all of the components used, down to making stock out of the bones. Reduction of food waste across the board is a huge priority with scraps used to make stock, apple peelings cooked down to make applesauce, “ugly” vegetables are utilized for sauces or stocks, and excess food is creatively given new life in future dishes rather than discarded. There is eventually a small amount of waste that is unavoidably produced, but in conjunction with Duchesne’s school-wide composting program, Quinn says, “None of our products should be headed to the landfill. All of our cups, plates, utensils, straws, microwavable to-go meals, and more can either be washed and reused or composted.” He goes on to say, “Excellent taste and nutrition were goals that we saw as intrinsically linked. Rather than get bogged down with the ever-changing science of nutritionism we ascribe to a much simpler philosophy: eat food, mostly plants, not too much. For us that means striving to showcase the wide variety of great foods that are out there and cook from scratch as much as possible. The fewer nutritional labels we encounter on our products, the better.” Educating students in the entire process has also been a critical goal. To that end, several classes of students help to prepare the daily lunch, snack/pastry offerings, work in the garden, learn new culinary techniques, and help with the clean-up. A new financial literacy class has also allowed for a great partnership and opportunity to educate students about money, product cost, and the overall operation of a business. The hope is that these lessons will permeate into the greater school community, beyond just the classroom, and inspire all students to be more conscientious eaters and consumers. Quinn concludes, “We knew trying to do all these things would be a huge endeavor, but it has also been one of great joy. We believe that there is something sacred about coming together around a meal prepared with love, and so we forge on with courage and confidence.”
Duchesne remains committed to being good stewards of our resources. For updates on our sustainability efforts, be sure to follow us on social media!

NEW COURSES LEAD TO NEW OPPORTUNITY
D
uchesne Academy has been able to offer many new and interesting elective classes in all segments of the curriculum. From History of the Holocaust to AP Statistics and Biomedical Physiology, today’s Duchesne student has an array of new options for study. Over the last three years, many new classes have been created with a STEAM-focus (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). These include Design Academy and AP Computer Principles. In 2018, enrollment in these classes tripled, thus requiring the addition of a level 2 Design class and additional teachers. Students explore engineering concepts using high tech production tools and learn about issues involved in networking and policy affecting how we access the Internet. In the arts, we now offer Music in Film and Drumming Across Cultures and students taking Interior Design and Technical Theater are able to create projects
using CAD and a laser cutter. The arts at Duchesne, still a wonderful place to explore creativity, now have high tech options. Students interested in business careers can take Financial Literacy and Entrepreneurship and run the new coffee bar, Coeur de Café, as they explore fundamental concepts in marketing. Stop by the snack bar any morning and enjoy a smoothie or a coffee—all proceeds will be donated to a charity of the girls’ choice.
Other new course offerings help us to more fully live our Sacred Heart Goals, which call us to offer “programs that teach the principles of nonviolence, conflict resolution and peacemaking.” Conflict Resolution is now offered as a one semester elective that is already changing how students understand and deal with conflict within our school community. How students learn and how we prepare them for a world that is changing at an ever-faster pace for careers that may not yet exist is transforming education as we have known it. Classrooms are becoming increasingly interactive and technology-rich with hands-on, inquirybased learning. Acquiring knowledge is still important, but increasingly we have to teach how to discern reputable information from biased, how to sort through too much information to find the pertinent facts, and how to be life-long learners in a world that will not stand still for those who don’t keep trying to understand how it works.
COUNTING OUR BLESSINGS
O
ctober 20 is a day marked with celebrations among the Religious of the Sacred Heart (RSCJ) and students of Sacred Heart schools because it is the memorial of Mater Admirabilis. The original fresco of Mater is in Trinita dei Monti and painted in 1844 by postulant Pauline Perdrau. This year, on October 20, the Duchesne community celebrated a special liturgy in honor of Mater followed by a dedication of the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) lab in honor of sisters, (biologically and religiously) Mary Henry, RSCJ and Catherine Henry, RSCJ. Both Henry sisters attended Duchesne before serving in their capacity as RSCJ. Sr. Mary Henry was a 1926 graduate from the Academy who went on to become a nurse. Sr. Catherine Henry, graduated from Duchesne College in 1938, and is most fondly remembered by the Duchesne community for her role as an engineer on a construction project in the 1960’s. Considering each of their professional backgrounds and their steadfast, faithfilled commitment to service through the Society, it’s fitting that the STEAM lab be dedicated in their honor. October 20 also served as an opportunity to bless the Sr. Joanne Fitzpatrick Grand Hall, a gathering space that represents a lasting memory of the 492 Religious who served at Duchesne Academy and College. A reception following both blessings was held in this special space. FALL 2018 13

Duchesne welcomes new athletic director by Eric Krakowski
D
uchesne Academy extends a warm welcome to our new Athletic Director, Mr. Kevin Van Winkle. Kevin comes to Duchesne after spending 11 years at his alma mater, Creighton Prep, where he taught social studies, directed retreats, moderated service trips to the Dominican Republic, directed the Harvard Model Congress, and was head coach of both the freshman football and freshman baseball teams. Kevin firmly believes that athletics provide students with experiences that will help prepare them for life in college, the workplace, and beyond. He is energized by the tradition at Duchesne and finds the Goals and Criteria to be a source of direction and wisdom for himself and for our students both in the classroom and on the playing field. Kevin says, “Duchesne has an amazing reputation in academics, apostolic work, and the arts. My goal is to have the athletic program match those other areas, so that young women choosing a high school can recognize that Duchesne offers excellence in everything. Kevin and his wife Liz have a two-year-old daughter named Ellie. Baby number two, Leo James, joined the family on October 9. Please welcome Kevin Van Winkle to the Duchesne family and offer your support as he, along with our coaches and student athletes, work hard every day to strive for excellence and represent Sacred Heart values at their finest.

DUCHESNE DYNASTY: Golf Team Wins 4th Straight State Title by Kevin Van Winkle
D
uchesne Academy is witnessing a dynasty. The varsity golf team won its 4th straight State Championship in Columbus on October 8 and 9. The title caps an incredible season in which the team won every varsity tournament it entered, including a 72-stroke margin of victory in the River Cities Conference Meet that earned all five members of Duchesne’s team All-Conference honors. Head Coach Jeff Nielsen has been at the helm for the entirety of the run. He claims that the consistent key to success throughout the run has been depth and competition within the team. In each event, five golfers are entered and the top 4 are scored. The team has had at least five solid golfers every year, which the coach says, “makes for great teams.” With at least 20 girls on the team, competition to make each other better is high. “These girls put a lot of work in to be great,” said Nielsen, “golf is important to them.” What stood out about Duchesne’s team, according to Nielsen, is how they get along and form a close community as a team. He noted specifically how tough this year’s State team is. “A lot of people don’t realize how hard it is to hit a ball, on the ground, that is not moving,” said Nielsen. Add to that the pressure of winning and managing high expectations, “These girls are tough; they find a way to get the ball in the hole with the least number of strokes possible.” Nielsen also noted how humble the team is. “These girls are never satisfied. They don’t gloat; they strive to be the best.” Anna Boor A19 has been a member of all four state championship teams. She has led the team this year on and off the course in her senior season, which also saw her claim the individual title in both Districts and State. “Anna deserves everything she gets,” said Nielsen. “She has put a lot of work in to being one of the best players in the state.” Additionally, she “always keeps her teammates smiling and laughing, which keeps practices fun.” Lauren Goertz A20 was the team’s other most accomplished individual this season by placing 1st in the
Beatrice Invite and in the RCC Championships. Goertz finished 3rd individually at state, followed by Bridget Duffy A21 in 4th, Karolyn LaRose A19 in 16th and Katie Speer A20 in 18th. Each school can only enter five golfers for District and State competition, which left out Rena Ikeda-Hayes A20, despite her very impressive season. Goertz will return next year to vie for a 5th straight team title alongside Duffy, Speer, Ikeda-Hayes, and a talented mix of younger players. Nielsen will return as well. “Not only are they good golfers, but they are better people,” said the coach. “These girls represent what Duchesne is all about. I’m extremely proud to be their coach.”
At press-time the Duchesne cross country team had just qualified for State, and the volleyball team is hopeful for a State berth as well. Check back in the spring issue for updates on these teams.

A MESSAGE FROM THE ALUMNAE BOARD Hello Duchesne Alumnae! Thank you to all who attended the all-school reunion this past September. From recent Academy graduates to Duchesne College graduates, it was a great weekend of connecting with our Sacred Heart sisters, sharing memories, and admiring the beautiful ways that Duchesne has changed over the years. If you have not already done so, please consider donating to Duchesne’s annual fund, lovingly renamed the Duchesne Fund. A portion of the annual fund supports the alumnae board in its many events including reunion, memorial Mass, holiday Mass and donuts with Santa, “Stuart”ship day, the young alum gathering, marathon bridge, and the passport breakfast for seniors and their mothers. Each year the alumnae board makes a contribution to the Sr. Mary Pat Ryan Endowed Scholarship, which is awarded to the daughter of an alumna.
Share your news! Send any life events that you would like us to share in Duchesne Today to Trisha Meehan, Alumnae Relations Director, at tmeehan@duchesneacademy.org

Valerie Sampson A73 and husband Rick traveled to France last September, stopping at The Rodin Museum. This property was once one of the Sacred Heart schools and the mother house of the Society, where St. Madeline Sophie worked and lived. Just inside the entrance is a small chapel, where now museum tickets are sold. Symbols of the Society remain in the chapel stained glass windows. Valerie and Rick also traveled a few blocks farther to the Church of St. Frances Xavier in Paris, where the incorrupt body of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat lies.
Gabe Hopp, A00, became the co-owner of One Tree Yoga on Omaha in August of 2018. Gabe began a serious yoga practice while in college, to heal several lower back injuries. The natural progression of yoga took her through several trainings and certifications and she's been teaching since 2010. Gabe co-leads the teacher training program and teaches several weekly public classes. She would be delighted to see you at One Tree!
Lauren Aliano Mueller A00 Johnna Marcil Eck A81 recently celebrated the marriage of her daughter Haley Eck Holt (a Duchesne Preschool alumna). The family celebration was attended by several aunts of the bride, all Academy alumnae (left to right): Michaela Marcil Belatti A74, Marise Marcil Fruehauf A75, Haley, Johnna, and Michon Marcil Abts A76. Johnna tells us that Haley's grandmother, the late Shirley Doran Marcil C49 was “present in spirit.”

Duchesne’s admissions director and varsity soccer coach was inducted into the Drew University Athletic Hall of Fame this fall. Mueller competed year-round as a rare three-sport athlete for her college. As published by Drew University, “She was a standout soccer player from her midfield position, earning three All-MAC Freedom Conference certificates, including firstteam honors in 2000 and 2003. She was tabbed the Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year after scoring a career-high eight goals in 2000. During basketball season, Mueller netted 953 points and helped the 2003-04 squad to its winningest season in school history, when Drew finished 16-10 and captured an ECAC title. She shot 75.9 percent at the free-throw line for her career, a mark that ranks sixth in school history. Finally, Mueller excelled on the lacrosse field,

group of students and professors from the University of NebraskaLincoln to Costa Rica to get an in-depth examination of the schools and family services in Costa Rica. She visited private and public schools in both San Jose and Monteverde to compare the schools to each other and the education system in the United States. Jackie assessed the children who attended the bilingual schools in Monteverde on their English language capabilities to determine their reading fluency and comprehension of English as a second language. The group also worked with the Monteverde Institute to run programs for the assisted living group in the area. There was also a focus on the suitability practices in Monteverde and being immersed in local culture by staying with host families. “The experience changed my view of the world and how I can have an impact by doing things a little differently. It challenged me to get out of my comfort zone and think of my impact. Costa Rica is very conscious about waste and focused on sustainability. I am studying early childhood/elementary education, so this was a great chance to see the difference between the schools I work at in the Nebraska area and the schools in Costa Rica. I want to help children learn through love and help them see that we need to take the initiative to better the environment by caring for our surroundings and being conscious about how our actions can affect the earth.”

Where it Began :
Cathy Woods Hughes Revisits her Alma Mater Omaha native and Duchesne Academy alumna Cathy Woods Hughes A64 returned to the school for the first time since graduating. Woods Hughes has since gone on to create a media empire, becoming the first African American woman to head a publicly traded company.
T
he spring of this year included a somewhat unanticipated, yet very exciting, visit from Duchesne alumna and national media mogul, Cathy Woods Hughes. A 1964 graduate of the Academy, Hughes went on to become an entrepreneur and radio and television personality before breaking racial barriers in our country by becoming the first African American woman to head a publicly traded corporation when the company she founded, Radio One (now called Urban One because it includes television), went public in 1999. When it became known that Hughes would return to her hometown of Omaha as part of a series of events during which she was honored, and her successes celebrated, Head of School Meg Huerter Brudney reached out, extending a personal invitation to Hughes to visit her alma mater. To the great excitement of many, Hughes responded favorably and spent an afternoon walking the halls of Duchesne, visiting her former classrooms, and praying in the Chapel. The nostalgic visit, which marked the first time in 54 years that Hughes had returned to Duchesne, included a mix of laughter and tears as Hughes recalled both the trying times she experienced as a black student in an otherwise all-white environment and the deep impact that a Sacred Heart education had on her life. The daughter of an accomplished trombone-playing mother and father, who was the first black accounting graduate at Creighton University, Hughes’ education at Duchesne remains a pivotal part of her humble upbringing. Growing up in public housing in North Omaha, Duchesne was never on Hughes’ radar until Father John Markoe, a Jesuit priest and champion of civil rights, approached Hughes’ mother about the possibility of Cathy attending Duchesne with a guarantee that he would find a way to cover the cost of tuition. It was that opportunity that, perhaps, changed the trajectory of life for the young Cathy Woods. She stated, “I wouldn’t have made it without Duchesne as it embedded in me a quality educational experience that I still rely on today.” Hughes acknowledged that while her high school years, including life at home, were not without great challenges, it was the example set by her classmates and
the nuns at Duchesne, whom she referred to as “madams,” that broadened her horizons and exposed her to possibilities that she otherwise would have never known existed. As a student during a time when significantly fewer African American students attended Duchesne, Hughes, who visited during the school day when students were present, looked around and joyfully said, “It is so wonderful to witness the diversity of the student body of today…diversity is more than a term or catch phrase here…it’s a reality.” Clearly a woman who proudly celebrates her African American heritage, Hughes was pleased to learn that Duchesne’s enrollment of 330 young women in 2018 includes 18% minority students. Despite the noticeable contrast in the number of students of color within the student body compared to her days as a high school student, Hughes agreed that much has stayed the same. As she left the building she remarked, “The whole building has a warmth and vibrancy about it.” Hughes kept a very busy itinerary during her time in Omaha. In addition to her visit to Duchesne, she was recognized by the city of Omaha when a section of Paxton Boulevard was renamed in her honor during a street dedication ceremony and the day, May 17, was officially proclaimed “Cathy Woods Hughes Day.” Additionally, Hughes served as the keynote speaker at the Empowerment Network luncheon before her recognition by the Omaha Press Club who added her “Face on the Barroom Floor,” a tradition that honors newsmakers who have had an impact on the community. Members of the Duchesne community enthusiastically attended each and every well-deserved recognition that Hughes received during her whirlwind of a week spent in Omaha. Hughes proudly returned to DC, where she currently works and resides, with an armful of Duchesne apparel along with a Sacred Heart medallion and necklace. Following her visit, ongoing dialogue has continued as it is our great desire that Cathy Woods Hughes will return to Duchesne in the upcoming year to share her incredible story with the young women of Duchesne today.

W
e came from all over the country and even a few from outside of the U.S., and when we left, we went to colleges all over the country to finish our educations. Amazingly, we have stayed very close as a class and continue come to the annual Duchesne reunion even though we were only at the College for two years. I asked my classmates to send me some memories of our years at Duchesne College, and the most common treasure was the two years we spent in the humanities curriculum: a block of history, English, art, and music that was required of all students for four semesters. We had required listening in the listening lab, visits to Joslyn and literature from the Greeks to the present day. Each one of us left those two years with a global education that would be built on for our lifetimes. Some other fun things remembered included • Special dinners where everyone had to wear dresses and stockings, and the meal was followed by singing. • When Joan Kennedy came to support her brother-inlaw’s presidential run. • When a gentleman would call for a “dollie,” he could not go any further than portry; the girl would be called and' come down to meet the young man. • Some “unnamed people” would acquire tubs of ice cream from the kitchen and keep them on the outside window ledge of the old building in the winter. • Foreign films in the evening, and we could bring dates! • Flag football games and mixers. • Beautiful, meaningful Masses that taught us about the quickly changing post-Vatican II church. • Singing in the Duchesne College Singers under Mrs. Leota Strong and traveling to sing all over the Midwest. • The formal Mardi Gras dance was a big highlight. • Extensive manners and etiquette classes. • Duchesne graduates were highly valued upon graduation. • Many of us were “day hops” who lived at home but were very involved in Duchesne life. This year is our 50th year reunion of leaving Duchesne, but we have never left the Duchesne sisterhood. Some might think that we would feel bad towards Duchesne for not letting us finish our education, but we are so grateful for our Duchesne education and for the friendships that began in those years that we have carried for 50 years. We were all one class – 100 of us then and now. Judy Enenbach Quest President of the Class of 1970

Hundreds of current Academy students and alumnae love Nancy Davis! Why wouldn’t they? For 25 years, she has been their “mother in the kitchen” on ground floor. The snack bar and cafeteria have provided delicious smells that waft through the halls of Duchesne carry the love and care that Nancy has shown for years. Our school theme this year is “Love is Our Mission.” Nancy and her friends Noreen Frenking and Tricia Smith spent long hours providing comfort food for hungry students, embracing this throughout her time at Duchesne. She is eager to help someone who needs a snack when she isn’t feeling well or, if a student needs a little tender loving care, she will do whatever she can to make her feel better. There is no doubt that every student has felt the comfort and love that she exudes. Some changes have occurred in our lunch program this year. Nancy has, deservedly, taken on a different role. She and Noreen no longer spend as many hours at Duchesne, but they are still a welcome presence. They can still be seen preparing our meals; they just don’t have as much responsibility. We are lucky that they haven’t fully retired. Nancy has been much more than a “lunch lady” at Duchesne. She is a graduate of the college – class of 1966. All of her daughters attended Duchesne spanning the years 1981-1997. Her daughter Stacy and her son Steve worked for a time in the snack bar, and her son Matt is currently on our development committee. Each one of her seven children has been a part of our community. Thank you for being part of our Duchesne Academy family. You have blessed us with countless gifts of time, treasure and talent. Our lives have been enriched by your daily presence. You have kept our stomach and hearts full!
Special Recognition Award by Meg Huerter Brudney A83
Since I have been head of school, I have experienced incredible generosity and many “God winks,” and Susan Thurmond McMannama fits into both categories. Last year we replaced two 40-year-old boilers with an energy efficient HVAC system, and in the process we saw an opportunity to update a few rooms as everything was put back together. Specifically, three rooms came to mind: the powder room at portry, the parlor dining room, and the large reception room at the south end of the first floor that is called the Joanne Fitzpatrick Grand Hall, aka “the Fitz.” Meeting Susan McMannama was a “God wink.” Not only did I learn that she was a successful interior designer but that she also happened to be an alumna, Academy ‘72. Susan not only agreed to take on this project, but offered her professional services for free and gave us substantial discounts on materials such as rugs, drapes, wallpaper, and the like. I quickly learned that Susan is a visionary. She is able to look at a space and see the bones and visualize how it was meant to be. She incorporates this vision with a bit of a contemporary flare and has a magical ability to blend colors and fabrics to create a space that wows those who enter. From serene colors to bold design choices, Susan makes it all work seamlessly. She also has an uncanny ability to navigate dusty, torn up spaces in darling wedges, bright summer skirts, and crisp blouses. Susan has a generous heart, a deep spirit and a genuine love for Duchesne Academy. When we would share stories about Duchesne, it was not uncommon for her to well up with tears. She would get a little bit embarrassed but then laugh and say it’s because this is such a special place. Luckily, she has many excuses to return to Duchesne because her granddaughter attends our preschool. St. Madeleine Sophie Barat once said, “Be humble, be simple and bring joy to others.” I can think of nothing more indicative of Susan. I had this quote etched onto a crystal vase and when I gave it to her, she, with tears in her eyes, said this is her way to give back to Duchesne what Duchesne gave to her many years ago.

FROM THE 2018-2019 BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR For my family, attending Duchesne was contagious. My mother attended Duchesne College. My three sisters and my daughter have earned diplomas from the Academy. My niece “graduated” from one of the first Preschool classes when it re-opened. As new generations discover Duchesne, every young person attending has someone standing behind her/him making it possible. I will be forever grateful to my parents for guiding me to a Sacred Heart education. My husband shared my commitment to make sure our daughter attended Duchesne. The sacrifices families make were evident when I served as Duchesne’s development director. I raised funds to help students, teachers, Religious, and staff preserve Duchesne’s legacy of educating young women in a Christ-centered environment. Duchesne’s mission thrives today. Outstanding faculty and staff advance the traditions that started here 137 years ago. The school community designed a strategic plan to promote wellness and sustain our foothold in attracting and retaining qualified students. We affirmed our desire to welcome students, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds. In my current work at Creighton, I am delighted to interact with Duchesne alumna and current Creighton student Samantha Stoupa A14, who is in her first year of medical school. She bears witness to how a Duchesne education prepared her for college and professional school. Through her undergraduate biochemistry studies, Samantha earned three national recognitions. She was named a National Institutes of Health INBRE Scholar, a Goldwater Scholar and a Clare Boothe Luce Scholar. This past May, she received the Spirit of Creighton Award. Samantha is as kind and thoughtful as she is accomplished. If attendance at Duchesne is contagious, so is generosity. Your example of giving back to Duchesne encourages others to support the annual fund, Congé, and more. Thank you. Please join me in thanking our entire adult community. They generously take on tremendous responsibilities as women and men who believe, as I do, in the importance of passing on an amazing and transformational Sacred Heart education. Sincerely,

uring the past year, members of Duchesne’s advancement team, in partnership with the development committee of the Board, spent time analyzing progress made toward identified fundraising and stewardship goals. At the same time, Duchesne finalized a strategic plan that will guide the school and undoubtedly require additional fundraising dollars in the coming years. The outcome of those two processes supported growth within the advancement team including the addition of a major gifts officer and the expansion of the alumnae relations position from part-time to full-time. We are pleased to introduce Bob Verkuilen who is serving as our major gift officer. He came to Duchesne after working at St. Vincent de Paul for nine years as their development director. Married to a Duchesne alumna and parent to a current senior, Bob already knew a great deal about Duchesne. He also brings extensive experience in building relationships and guiding donors as they identify their philanthropic priorities in relation to the needs of a non-profit. Trisha Clark Meehan joined the advancement team in June in her role as alumnae relations director. A 2004 graduate of Duchesne, Trisha comes to us from CASA where she served as the director of community engagement for seven years. Trisha is a strategic thinker who values the importance of developing genuine relationships. She has already hit the ground running in her goal to meet as many alumnae as possible from varying generations. Trisha is eager to bring alumnae back to Duchesne and learn how we can better serve our graduates. Although not a new position, the role of creative media producer was recently filled by Abigail Justice A14, a graduate of Loyola University in New Orleans. With a degree in strategic communications and emphasis on social media, Abigail manages Duchesne’s main social media platforms of Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter, while also producing video and photography content. Abigail’s enthusiasm and deep understanding of the important role that social media plays in an overall communications strategy are an asset to the Duchesne community.
WELCOME TO THE BALLROOM By Tori Geis A19 Thanks to the generosity of donors and the Booster Club, Duchesne was able to repurpose the old gym into a room that doubles as indoor practice space and preschool playground. There are many new changes to Duchesne as we begin the new school year, but my favorite is by far the new Ballroom. The Booster Club, lead by parent John Doyle and former Athletic Director Julie Sgroi, took what used to be the small gym and generously added turf and nets inside. It was named and dedicated “The Ballroom” as a play on words for its function and also as an homage to the old “ballroom” up on fourth floor. Now, not only is the room still functional for the preschoolers who regularly use the space, but it can now be used as an indoor practice space for sports like softball and soccer. As a softball player, I LOVE the new Ballroom! When it rains, instead of scrambling to find a place to practice, we can now just head on over to the Ballroom and get some swings in. It is safe to say that all student athletes are very grateful for this new, useful addition to our school and community, and we want to thank everyone who had a hand in making it happen for us and all future athletes at Duchesne.

O
n Saturday, January 26, 2019, the Duchesne community will celebrate one of Duchesne’s oldest and best traditions, Congé! This year’s event theme, “With Love from Joigny…Where it all Began” invites us to explore the small, north-central town of Joigny, France, where Duchesne’s story began. It was here in 1779, that Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat was born, baptized, and educated. Today, hundreds of pilgrims, including our own Duchesne students, visit Joigny to “draw from the well” and stay in her family home, Centre Sophie Barat. Duchesne Academy and Preschool are proud to carry on Sophie’s vision to “make known the love of God as revealed in the heart of Christ.” We celebrate Sophie’s desire to educate young women and her devotion to sharing the Sacred Heart of Jesus with others. Join us on January 26, 2019 to help us build community as a Christian value and celebrate Duchesne! This year, Duchesne parents, Mindy and Bill Geis (parents to Tori A19 and Sophie A21), Catherine and Jeff Mahoney (parents to Kelly A19), and Mindy and Tim Reed (parents to Abby A19) are working hard to ensure that the evening is memorable and successful.
