A Letter From the Head of School
THE SACRED HEART LENS OF LOVE Dear Alumnae and Friends, Amidst the civil unrest this past summer, we took a humble look at our own biases as a Sacred Heart school. We listened to our students of color, reflected on racial injustices in our world, and studied the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops’ (USCCB) pastoral letter: Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love - A Pastoral Letter Against Racism. Since Duchesne is devoted to offering an education that is relevant, reflects gospel love, and promotes social awareness, we recognized an opportunity to further strengthen our anti-racist culture and cultivate the profound gift our girls already possess – the meaning of love thy neighbor as thyself.
When we begin to separate people in our thoughts for unjust reasons, when we start to see some people as “them” and others as “us,” we fail to love. Yet love is at the heart of the Christian life. When approached and asked what is the greatest commandment, Jesus answered: “You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and the first commandment. The second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself ” (Matthew 22:37-39). Let me share some of our beginning steps on this journey of addressing racial justice at Duchesne. In 2017, we completed a strategic plan laying out five major initiatives, one being to optimize enrollment and broaden diversity. Simply increasing diversity, however, is not enough. We are committed to accepting legacy students and growing our enrollment to create additional room for families beginning their Sacred Heart legacy. Currently, we have 340 students in the Academy of which 19% are students of color. We must continue to provide an environment in which all of our students, Academy and Preschool, feel welcome, safe, loved, and know that they belong. We offered ongoing professional development on racial reconciliation for all faculty and staff with help from the RSCJ and local experts. Recently, Dorothy Johnson has been appointed our first Director of Student Advocacy. Her responsibilities include connecting with all members of the Duchesne community. Working with Dr. Hickman and faculty members, a full curriculum review will adapt our courses to be more representative of our student body, ensuring inclusivity in all disciplines. Also, the faculty and staff will continue our racial reconciliation book club to better understand our own biases and build a stronger, more inclusive community. At the beginning of last school year, the students created and posted a sign in a highly travelled area that said, “All Are Welcome at Duchesne.” That sign faded in the sun, but the message of inclusion did not. It was never removed because I sincerely believe this is what our girls aspire to at Duchesne. We have a way to go, but with Love as our Mission, we will get there. Many Blessings,

United in the Sacred Heart, inspired to act for justice. By Cristina Wilwerding Hiddleston A’93 Each summer, all members of Duchesne’s faculty and staff are invited to participate in the development of our school theme for the coming year. In June 2020, several members of our adult community convened (virtually) to discuss our thematic focus for the 2020-21 school year. We knew we wanted to draw on the charism handed down from our foundress, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat, to be “wholly contemplative and wholly apostolic.” Wholly Contemplative – United in the Sacred Heart: We count ourselves incredibly fortunate to be part of the global Sacred Heart community, as well as the United States and Canada Network of Sacred Heart Schools. We believe there is unity in the Sacred Heart family and want our theme for the year to reflect solidarity among all members of that family. Wholly Apostolic – Inspired to Act for Justice: We looked to Goal Three, which calls us to form “a social awareness which impels to action" and, more specifically, “a critical consciousness that leads its total community to analyze and reflect on the values of society and to act for justice” (Goal Three, Criterion One). We selected the verb “inspired,” as that implies drawing on the love of the heart of Jesus, which is the driving mission of our founders, the Religious of the Sacred Heart, and accordingly, all our schools. When introducing the theme to our students and families, Mrs. Brudney said, “The first half of our theme provides the foundation for what follows. When we accept we are one within the Sacred Heart of Jesus, we discover the strength to be a voice for the voiceless. This summer we witnessed the killing of George Floyd, which has caused many people to wake up to the reality of systemic racism. It is a difficult time in our history.” All of the Duchesne community are called to open our eyes to these challenges and act against injustice. We are called to care for each other. We are called to behave responsibly to protect each other’s health. We are called to respond to ongoing systemic racism in our society; we are called to learn about our contributions to these systems and act against them. We are called to ongoing and improved sustainable practices and stewardship in response to our climate crisis. In short, we are called to recognize our unity, draw on the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, and act for justice. FALL2020 2019 5 FALL
Preschool News
First New Pre-K Class Since 1998! By Sara Wachter A’79 How do you face a challenge? At Duchesne Preschool we move quickly and happily to solve any issue in our little community, and this year the concern is needing additional space. More and more parents want a 3-day or 5-day school option for their child as they move from the Nursery class to the Pre-Kindergarten class. When enrollment opened in February, the Pre-K class was full within an hour and a long waiting list. The result was clear – we have grown to need a second classroom on Monday/Wednesday/Friday.
Current preschool parent AJ McLeay designed and installed the custom cabinets and sink and counter for this new classroom. McLeay’s company, Gander Co. Development, created a beautiful environment for these teachers and children. Kelly’s Carpet installed the new tile for the “messy projects and snack time” area. We simply added new furniture and toys to complete a fabulous new Pre-K classroom! We chose to hire Mrs. Katherine Hoberman to open our new classroom. Mrs. Hoberman has taught at Duchesne Preschool in different capacities for seven years, and her own two children have attended our preschool. She holds an M.A. in Early Childhood Education from Teachers College, Columbia University and is trained as a Waldorf Class teacher. While pursuing her M.A. in New York City, she completed her master’s project on Literacy and Play in Early Childhood at a magnet school. She is a perfect fit for our program. An upward enrollment trend of five years led to the creation of our second Pre-K classroom in 2020. As Janet Erskine Stuart, RSCJ, said, “The way to do much in a short time is to love much. People will do great things if they are stirred with enthusiasm and love.” Our Preschool community is certainly stirred by love and enthusiasm to create this classroom in a short time.

R elatively Speaking… By Sara Wachter A’79 What could be better than working at Duchesne? The answer to that question is simple…surprise encounters with your child or grandchild at Duchesne Preschool. This blessing is enjoyed by nine of our Academy teachers and staff this year. The Duchesne Preschool children spend their days living the Five Goals and learning through play. They start each morning with the following prayer that incorporates the Five Goals: I am a child of the Sacred Heart. Each day, dear Lord, I will Love as You love, Study and learn, Help those who need me, Be a friend to all, And make wise choices! Saint Madeleine Sophie, hear my prayer. Saint Rose Philippine, hear my prayer. Just what does it mean to these lucky faculty and staff members to share the mission, goals, and spirit of Duchesne with their little ones? I reached out to them, and here is what they had to say:
Laura Hickman I love that a new generation of my family is learning the love of the Sacred Heart and the beauty of community. We will share this connection in a special way as a bond that defines who we are. Krissy Walsh Having Coco at Duchesne Preschool means that she gets to be part of the loving Sacred Heart community from an early age! The preschool staff is so welcoming and patient—I know she’s in good hands when I drop her off! The thing I love the most about having her here is that we get to ride to and from the building together every day. I love getting her detailed report about what’s going on at the preschool. Sometimes I get to see her with her class as I’m walking around the school—it’s so fun to be able to say hi while I’m working! Jason Schlesiger To have Josh here at Duchesne is a blessing for our family. Our identity as Catholics is foundational to who we are, and we feel so fortunate that Josh is able to receive a Sacred Heart education from such a loving group of educators. Kevin Van Winkle I love that my daughter is in the hands of talented and committed teachers every day that are inspired by Sacred Heart values and traditions. I trust that she will be cared for, prayed for, and loved when she comes to school. I enjoy hearing her sing the songs that she sings in school on our drive home. Lauren Mueller Having Lois at Duchesne Preschool is so special. I love watching her grow as a child of the Sacred Heart. New Faces in the H alls of D uchesne We are fortunate to add two new employees to Duchene Academy's staff this school year, Katie D’Agostino, director of finance and operations, and Dorothy Johnson, director of student advocacy.
As a graduate of Marian, Katie D’Agostino experienced the value of an all-girls education firsthand. After 15 years in the corporate world, she comes to Duchesne eager to blend her professional experience with her passion for all-girls education. In her last role, she worked for Joe Ricketts at Hugo Enterprises leading his merger and acquisition efforts and was responsible for evaluating and advising on acquisition opportunities. Prior to that she was a controller at HDR and led the operational accounting team for the Nebraska and Iowa areas. When asked about her move to 36th and Burt, D’Agostino said, “Duchesne is unique and I’m excited to be here. The entire community radiates love and warmth, which is particularly striking during a time in our world that may otherwise be quite isolating. It is an honor to work alongside people whose life mission it is to help our young women build strong academic and spiritual foundations that will shape the rest of their lives. I look forward to bringing the Five Goals of a Sacred Heart education to life in this role but also in my personal life at home. If I’m able to do that half as successfully as my colleagues at Duchesne, I’ll take the win.” D’Agostino graduated from Saint Louis University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and she also holds a Master of Business Administration from the University of Nebraska Omaha. In her personal life, Katie and her husband, Andy Gorham, have a third-grade son at Saint Pius/ Saint Leo Catholic School, and her four-yearold daughter attends Duchesne Preschool.

Mrs. Dorothy Johnson’s responsibilities include connecting with all members of the Duchesne community to bring the focus of inclusion to every facet of school life. Johnson comes to us from Metropolitan Community College, where she was the Concurrent Enrollment Navigator overseeing the Millard Early College High School Program. Prior to that, she served as an administrative director for the Basic Hope Foundation, managing the SOAR program (structured teaching, opportunities for social inclusion, active learning, and rigor) for underrepresented students at Nathan Hale, Morton, McMillan, and other urban middle schools.

As well as this recent work, Johnson has years of experience in hiring and recruiting with a concentration on diversity and inclusion for Omaha Public Schools, the State of Nebraska, and local non-profit organizations. She is an active member of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce, serving on the advisory committee for diversity, equity, and inclusion. In her free time, Johnson has coached volleyball for Omaha North High School and the urban Omaha volleyball teams since 2009. She holds a bachelor’s degree in sociology from Grambling State University and is working on her master’s degree from Bellevue University. When asked about her new role, Johnson said, “I’m excited to utilize my diversity experience for Duchesne. I can see there are many good inclusion programs already in place. Who wouldn’t be happy in a community that just exudes an atmosphere of welcome?” Johnson would like everyone to know that she will be focused on empowering all of our students to capitalize on their individual strengths and how we all can add to the strong, loving, and robust community at Duchesne Academy and Preschool.

Administrator of the year award: Martha Heck By Laura McKee Hickman, Ed.D A'85 Each year during the Archbishop’s Dinner for Education, teachers and administrators are honored by their colleagues. The nominated candidates are chosen as one urban, one rural, and one inner-city outstanding administrator. This year our own Martha Heck received the urban distinction, Administrator of the Year.
it is her forty-first year in Catholic schools, having previously worked at Omaha’s Cathedral High School. Martha is a product of Catholic education and has devoted her career to serving Catholic schools. In all those years in the classroom and administration, she has touched the lives of thousands of young people as a role model, advocate, arts and sports fan, and ally. Each of her students knows God’s love through her personalized guidance and care.
While this is Martha Heck’s twenty-fifth year working with the young women of Duchesne Academy as the dean of students,
Caroline Ortman A’20 wrote, “Ms. Heck rocks. She truly cares and wants to ensure that all students feel loved and supported

by their peers and their whole community at Duchesne. She is kind and funny, but she can also be stern and put down her foot. When she is firm, people listen because everyone respects her so much. She is a great role model for all the young ladies at Duchesne.” Martha Heck profoundly embodies Madeleine Sophie Barat’s vision at Duchesne: “It is better to err on the side of being too kind than too firm.”

We Speak Their Names By Trisha Clark Meehan A’04 In the fall of 2016, the Provincial Team of the Society of the Sacred Heart established a committee with the mandate to focus on the Society’s role in racism and the enslavement of people. “We sought to engage in deeper research with a view to telling the fuller story. We knew that this would mean both confronting a painful part of our legacy and committing to truth, healing, and reconciliation for a better future,” said Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ, chair of the Committee on Slavery, Accountability and Reconciliation. “The Society of the Sacred Heart, United States – Canada Province continues to work humbly to acknowledge our history of enslavement, to build relationships with the
descendants of our enslaved persons, and to work with the descendants toward racial equity and the end to systemic racism in our institutional structures.” said Provincial Sheila Hammond, RSCJ on Juneteenth and the Feast of the Sacred Heart, June 19, 2020.
history. She shared details on the Society's diligent efforts to uncover realities and offer reconciliation to the descendants of those who were an intregal part of Grand Coteau’s mission. The Society continues to study and discuss the ongoing anti-racism work and disseminate that information.
On Saturday, October 17, 2020, Donna Collins, RSCJ presented a webinar to the Duchesne community entitled, “We Speak Their Names: The Enslaved Peoples of Grand Coteau." Sister Collins spoke specifically to the Duchesne community about the history of the enslaved peoples at the Academy of the Sacred Heart in Grand Coteau, Louisiana. Using original documents from Grand Coteau’s archives, Sister Collins and a group of fellow RSCJ researched and reviewed this important

Melanin Magic
M eaning behind By Jayleesha R. Cooper A'21 As you may or may not know, last year I started Duchesne’s first Black Student Union. The club meetings were open to everyone, but we felt like the name was a little misleading, so we decided to rename the club Melanin Magic this year. We chose Melanin Magic because every single student of color comes in a different shade of melanin. This melanin is unique and beautiful and makes people of the same race a million and one different colors which is magical. The mission of the club is to provide a safe space for students of color and allies to comes together and feel comfortable in their own skin. A lot of
the
times it can be hard for a student of color to feel comfortable with their culture and background when they are not around other people who have shared experiences with them. This can be overwhelming and detrimental to a girl’s mental health, especially when coming into school as a freshman and not being used to being the only person of color in classes or friend groups. I want to help lessen the stress by giving a space where girls can be comfortable to talk about issues they are facing or ask for advice from other students about situations that they have probably also gone through. Anyone is welcome to the club, which is moderated by Mrs.
New Name Dorothy Johnson, and our meetings are usually discussion based with different topics for the week, so it is a very fun and informational club for people who want to know how to be a better ally to their classmates of color. The topics for the meetings are chosen by members so they can vary across the broad spectrum. Through this club we hope to make Duchesne a community that promotes and accepts diversity with a safe place for their students from diverse backgrounds to come and be themselves. *Article taken from the September issue of The Bird Post, Duchesne's student newspaper. Mental Health & Faith in Times of Crisis By Meghan Conway Rowen A’97, and Nancy Kehoe, RSCJ Ph.D C'65 During the summer, Sacred Heart Network school event directors were challenged with creating new events for entire school communities to participate. Duchesne’s team asked Nancy Kehoe, RSCJ, to share her presentation entitled, “Mental Health and Faith in Times of Crisis,” with our Zoom audience. Nancy Kehoe, RSCJ, entered religious life in 1956 three years before her intended graduation. She returned to complete coursework and graduated from Duchesne College in 1965. Sister Kehoe earned both B.A. and M.Ed degrees. However, she always considers

the class of 1959 “her class.” Those classmates are still her dearest friends. After receiving her Ph.D from Boston College, Sister Kehoe had a private psychology practice for 23 years and was a pioneer in creating groups focused on spirituality for adults with serious mental health issues. She is the author of Wrestling with Our Inner Angels - Faith, Mental Illness, and the Journey to Wholeness. She is currently an adjunct assistant clinical professor of psychology at Harvard Medical School. On Wednesday, September 16, Sister Kehoe gave the Duchesne community some insight, tools, and advice to help us navigate the world during these ever-changing times. In the second poem by 17-year
old Boston Poet Laurate, Alondra Bobadilla, she states “I think of this as a golden moment, an opportunity to let the soul inside you speak buried truths, an opportunity to extend yourself beyond your limit.” And lastly, in the prayer of Philippine, the first line states, “I am where God wills me to be.” Sr. Kehoe followed these beautiful works with “For our reflection tonight I would like to focus on the idea of being in the right place, God’s classroom, where God wills me to be, a golden moment. And to consider the necessity of paying attention to all of whom we are, our bodies, minds and spirits.” Sister Kehoe commented, “For months now we have heard the words,

‘unprecedented, unique, challenging, extraordinary’ used over and over again. On a more individual level, we bring all of whom we have been up to this point, our culture, our ethnicity, our geographical location, our family of origin, our physical make up, our mental health status, our education, our faith formation, our past hurts and joys, our triumphs and our failures. Each of us dwells in our own unique house – filled with all of our history and experiences, everything that has made us who we are to this point and shapes how we respond to this moment. Think of that – what are you aware of that is being brought to consciousness at this time, in helpful ways and in unsettling ways.” Thought provoking and insightful, Sister Kehoe discusses living with the toll stress takes on us, what we can and cannot control, and the difference between stress and anxiety. She encourages all of us to think of our lives lived up to this point. And reflect on events that are causing us stress and affecting our approach to the current reality.
Sister Kehoe asks her audience to “carve out some time every day to focus on your relationship with God, the Other, the Teacher, in whatever way helps you;” these are some suggestions: 1) Just telling God/Jesus/the Spirit what is on your heart, if you are afraid, if you are angry at what you are losing because of this crisis, if you are worried about your family, your children, your grandchildren and their futures, or friends who might be losing their jobs or how the school year will be played out, or our country 2) Doing some reading of Scripture, of sacred texts, of people whose challenging lives were shaped by their faith. I recently read Sister Phil Kilroy’s book on Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat and I was amazed at the suffering in our founder’s life and yet her absolute conviction that Jesus was with her and would see her through all the seemingly insurmountable issues she faced, conflicts within the Society, with the hierarchy, her own illnesses, the TB, cholera and malaria
epidemics in Europe and in America, and political upheaval. 3) Pay attention to beauty, to God’s creativity, listening to music, journaling about what you believe or don’t, and asking for help, reading poetry. Connect daily. After spending time connecting – you might write about your experience because that is how we come to deepen our faith, our connection. Sister Kehoe then ended her reflection with lines from Psalm 34. “Though we are beset with many fears that cause illness and troubles, God, the Beloved, all powerful Spirit is ever ready to lighten our heavy hearts, to ease our burdens, to comfort us in our sorrows. The Beloved renews the life of all who surrender to a power greater than our hearts.” Stay safe, stay healthy, and remember to connect daily.

By Laura McKee Hickman, Ed.D A’85 Imagine a parade of more than 1,200 students from the three allgirls’ schools marching through the streets of Omaha to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment. For much of the 2019-20 school year, that is exactly what we imagined and planned, along with keynote speakers, breakout sessions, a Mass, and many other wonderful events—all that never happened. While the rare gathering could not occur, we did find some wonderful ways to mark this important anniversary. All three schools selected the same summer read, Margaret Peterson Haddix's Uprising, the story of the Triangle Shirt Waist Factory strike and fire as told through three young female protagonists. On August 26, the anniversary of the ratification, the school took a day to teach the history, Zoom meet the author of our book, and discuss the meaning of our citizenship. The celebration of women’s voices in the political spectrum continued on election day, November 3, with a panel of local female political leaders moderated by the League of Women Voters. Duchesne students Clary Doyle and Anna Preston have also written and produced a short play to commemorate the centennial, “Practically Everything but the Seneca Falls Conference.” While many women had to struggle well into the 1960s to be able to practice their right to vote, the passage of the 19th Amendment was the milestone that opened the door for all women today by recognizing our citizenship for the first time. It is a right and a responsibility that has shaped the lives and opportunities of every student to ever attend our school.

National M er it S emi -F inalists & C ommended S cholars 2020/2021 By Frances Smyth Swanson Duchesne Academy is proud to honor the following nine seniors for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. More than 1.5 million juniors in approximately 21,000 high schools entered the 2021 Scholarship Program by taking the 2019 PSAT/ NMSQT® qualifying test. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors. The top 3-4% of students earn “Commended Scholars” status. Because of Duchesne, I learned what it means to love everyone around me.” How has Goal Three impacted you? “Goal Three will continue to be a part of the rest of my life. During my four years at Duchesne, I learned so much about the urgent social justice issues in our community and around the world. My time here has encouraged me to get out in the community and advocate for equality. Part of the reason I want to go to a Jesuit college is because I love their commitment to service, which I find very similar to Sacred Heart values.” Special Memory: “If I had to choose just one memory of Duchesne, I would say simply eating lunch with my friends every day. These lunch breaks taught me to take a step away from school and enjoy the moment.”

It means intentionally seeking out injustice and educating ourselves about it and educating ourselves is found in Goal Two, respect for intellectual values. Once we have that knowledge, we are called to act upon it. Goal Three uses the word impels - maybe this urge comes from God in Goal One, personal and active faith in God. But we have the option of answering this calling to act for justice or to not answer it as in Goal Five, personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom. And ultimately, should we obtain justice, it will strengthen our community, Goal Four, building community as a Christian value. For me, Goal Three is the most impactful goal because it holds within it the values of all of our Sacred Heart goals.” Special Memory: “It’s so hard to choose a single favorite memory of this place which I love and appreciate so dearly. Every day at Duchesne has been rich with positive classroom, social, and extracurricular experiences. My freshman year, I was so astounded at the amount of small, yet numerous, privileges that we were given. This goal is so special to me because I believe that people should be given the freedom to make their own decisions and then learn from those choices, whether they are successes or failures. No one can grow in a claustrophobic space with too many rules, and by learning from my failures and successes, I have gained perspective that will help me in college and beyond.” How has Goal III impacted you: “My freshman year I was afforded an opportunity to spend a week working at the Winnebago reservation. Looking back, I was so fortunate to go as a freshman as it set my mind on a path of first-hand awareness and participation. Bonding with upperclassmen gave me confidence in myself and many times that is what makes a difference when you are asked to lead or serve others.” Special Memory: “My favorite memory at Duchesne is probably preforming as Brutus in the school’s spring production of Julius Caesar. I had never been in a play before and I almost didn’t audition because I was so swamped with other activities, but I’m so glad that I decided to because it was some of the most fun, I’ve ever had. A close second would probably be every moment I spent on the Duchesne cross country team running with my best friends.”

Without their support, I would never have been able to pursue my passion for medicine as a high schooler obtaining my emergency medical technician (EMT) license through off campus courses.” How has Goal Three impacted you: “Goal Three has inspired my love of service and heightened my awareness of the need present in our community. The most meaningful service activity I have participated in is preparing meals for the Omaha Women’s Shelter. I am continually inspired by the strong female leaders around me and I am eternally grateful for the opportunities I have had to positively impact the lives of underserved women in my community.” Special Memory: “I have many entertaining and happy memories of Duchesne, but meeting Ms. Heck for the first time is my favorite. She is a perfect embodiment of what it means to be a Duchesne woman and continually inspires me with her kindness and compassion.”

How has Goal Three impacted you: “Goal Three has broadened my mind by encouraging me to step outside of my comfort zone in pursuit of it. I volunteered with All Saint’s Catholic School after-school art program, helping lead grade school kids in art projects. This is not something I would have seen myself doing before, but it ended up being one of my favorite service experiences yet.” Special Memory: “Eating lunch outside with friends. Duchesne does a great job of giving us opportunities to choose how we use our time and puts responsibility on students to make sure we are doing work or something productive.” How has Goal Three impacted you: “Goal Three has impacted me as it has taught me that I cannot be ignorant of the world around us. You have to educate yourself so that you know what is going on around you and to stand up for your beliefs. I have been taught to educate myself on the world, form my own opinions, and be active in fighting to make things right. Whether that be attending rallies, marches, or service, I have been taught to try to make the world more just and right around us.” Special Memory: “One of my favorite memories has been supporting Duchesne sports. I have participated on the golf and trapshooting teams and I enjoy being a part of them and cheering on my teammates, but I also enjoy supporting other teams. State volleyball is one of these fun memories. Driving down to Lincoln on the bus was always a blast and cheering in the student section showed what Duchesne is about. The student body is always so excited for their teams and the school spirit makes State volleyball so memorable.”

Favorite Sacred Heart Goal: “Goal Three, a social awareness that impels to action, is my favorite goal. It reminds me to be constantly conscious of the people around me and think about how I can be a positive force in my community. Although all Five Goals are important to me, Goal Three is the one that I most hope to continue to embody in the future. Duchesne has really taught me to learn about the issues in our society and to help be a voice for change in my community. Over the summer I participated in the Juvenile Justice service trip through the Sacred Heart Network. During the virtual service trip, I learned a lot about the justice system in America and how it needs to be reorganized to reflect restorative justice, instead of the injustices it perpetuates today. Being at Duchesne has taught me a lot about how to be a voice for justice in our society, and I hope to continue to be a model of Goal Three in the future.”
Special Memory: “My favorite memory at Duchesne is probably ring ceremony. Although it was different this year, because of COVID-19, I still had a lot of fun celebrating. My sister got to ring me because of the change to the event, so it was really special for her to do that because normally that wouldn’t have been the case. Having a moment to celebrate with my friends (distanced and masked!!) as we became the leaders of the school was really special, even though it was amid uncertain times.”

Favorite Sacred Heart Goal: “Goal Four, the building of community as a Christian value, stands out to me the most. I am so grateful to be a part of this special Sacred Heart community. We are nothing without God and each other, and the kindness and care for one another expressed in the halls at Duchesne is irreplaceable. I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else than here, a part of this Christian community. Now that we are seniors, A’21 has really come together to support each other through the pandemic, college applications, and the many “lasts” we have and will experience this year.” How has Goal III impacted you: “A social awareness that impels to action, has certainly impelled me to action. I have attended the Pro-Life March in Washington D.C., I have joined a group of teenagers who raise awareness and money for children with pediatric cancer, and I have played my violin for various fundraisers and nursing homes. I know I want to enter into a career that will change the lives around me for the better.” Special Memory: “I have many favorite memories of Duchesne! Some of the best are from the sports teams I have had the pleasure of being a part of: cross country, swim/dive, and tennis. We always have pasta dinners the nights before competitions, filled with inside jokes, a little bit of nerves, and a lot of laughter. I love singing Coeur de Jésus after our competitions because it is something that solidifies our community and distinguishes it from others. I love going to study sessions with my friends, whether we get anything done or not. Duchesne Prom was one of the best nights of my life! I got to dress up, dance, spend time, be goofy, and have fun with my absolute best friends. And of course, I love Conge! Last year’s right before quarantine was the best one yet, and definitely high on my list of favorite memories at Duchesne.”

I think there can be a lot of pressure in the college application process to apply to elite schools and pile on a lot of extracurriculars to make your resumé look better. Goal Five has taught me that I don't need to fulfill some mystical list of criteria to be worthy of a college education. What I can do right now is enough.” How has Goal Three impacted you: “For me, Goal Three emphasizes the importance of recognizing injustice and inequity in the world. It calls me to find the motivation to make the world better within myself, rather than work for justice out of a sense of obligation or external pressure.” Special Memory: “My favorite memory of Duchesne is doing Julius Caesar my junior year—the long nights spent in the theater practicing, the bonds we formed in the cast, and pouring my heart out as Antony every night. It opened me to a vulnerability that I believe makes us stronger.”

Administrators want to give teachers more options for conducting class to lessen the risk of COVID transmission. Teachers may now conduct class outside using iPads and web-based teaching tools. Omaha’s Egis Technologies President, Monte Monteleagre and technicians determined how to expand and enhance the network at Duchesne. During the process technicians carefully selected cabling paths so as not to damage Duchesne’s 140-year-old home. Egis Technologies also installed expanded and enhanced Wi-Fi at Saint Cecilia Elementary School and Joslyn Castle. “We’re fortunate to be able to provide this technology for our community. I love seeing our girls reading or working on their iPads and enjoying the beauty of our courtyard or east lawn,” said Head of School Meg Brudney. 20 DUCHESNE TODAY

Duchesne Solar Energy Update Written by Eric Krakowski Happy one-year anniversary to Duchesne’s solar panels! In September 2019, Duchesne installed a 30-panel, 12 kW solar array on the roof above the library. The brainchild of a student-driven project in 2017, the initial goal of the solar panel installation was to produce enough electricity to offset energy use in the school’s DREAM Lab, which houses Duchesne’s 3D printers and other high-tech STEM teaching tools. After one-year of use, the results are in and they are encouraging. From October 2019 to October 2020, the solar panels produced 10.29 MWh of electricity. In that same time period, the DREAM Lab used 9.16 MWh of electricity, resulting in more than 1 MWh of surplus energy that helped offset electrical use in other areas of the building. The amount of energy produced by the solar array is the carbon offset equivalent of planting 140 trees or reducing the number of miles driven in a year by 23,000 miles. Inspired by Pope Francis’ 2015 encyclical Laudato Si’, as a U.S. Department of Education “Green Ribbon School,” Duchesne is proud of its nationally recognized sustainability efforts and its commitment to be a good caretaker of creation. By Kevin Van Winkle This year’s Student Athlete Leadership Team (SALT) chose “Unity Through Adversity” as the motto for our athletic programs. The team wanted to recognize the unique challenges this year brings to the athletes. Not only do our teams push themselves through hard work at practice, but they also need to hold each other accountable to COVID safety protocols inside and outside of their team activities. Together, they have been able to continue their seasons and finished the fall season without any major alterations to their schedules. We are very proud of them! Highlights of the Fall

Unity Through Adversity: Duchesne Athletic Teams Continue to Compete Amid Pandemic
The Cross Country team had one of its most successful seasons in history! They won or finished second in all but two meets this year, including winning the University of Nebraska Kearney Invitational, River Cities Conference, and Districts! They fell a little short of their team goal by finishing fifth at the State Meet on October 23 while all six Varsity members ran great times. Our Cross Country team has more than 70 runners, and they all practice and compete as a family and epitomize Goal Four. The Golf team finished as State Runnerup! After winning RCCs and finishing second in Districts, the team headed west to Gering, Nebraska, for the State Meet, projected to finish in the top five but with a difficult path to a trophy. All
five team members played amazingly over the two days, led by Bridget Duffy A’21 who finished fifth overall. They were able to hold off the third place team by just seven strokes, so they needed everyone. It was a true team effort and a great showing of resilience in difficult wind conditions. The Lacrosse team hosted an entire fall season on Duchesne’s home field. Their league was missing a few teams following Omaha Public Schools opting out of fall sports. Duchesne took the lead in organizing a condensed season of weekend triangulars and clinics at 3601 Burt. It was a great learning experience for all, and we’re excited to see how the program continues to grow! The Softball team finished the season on a high note with an inspired run to the Subdistrict final. They finished just one win short of the District Final. We are exceptionally proud of the way they competed and maintained positivity all season. The Volleyball team just wrapped up their season. After finishing as the Runner-up in the RCC Tournament and winning the B1 Subdistrict, they headed to a District Final on Halloween. Their difficult schedule during the year left them with a 14-19 record and the 15th seed in the District Finals. They played at #2 Norris and fell 3-0. The loss ended a great season and the excellent careers of seniors Sofia Bressani, Kaitlyn Knobbe, Emily Kaup, and Shae Vaughan.

Authoring Maureen’s Last Chapter A son's quest to finish his mother's story.
By Trisha Clark Meehan A’04, and Patrick Sechser Patrick Sechser was only sixteen years old in 2001 when his mother, Maureen Carver Sechser A’72, passed away from an unexpected stroke after a long battle with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Patrick and his sister, Ellen Sechser Belt A’00, grew up witnessing their mother’s declining health. In spite of her illness, Maureen rose above her sickness to instill lifelong lessons of strength and unending love in her children. One of Maureen’s aspirations was to be a published author, and she was unable to realize this dream before her passing. About a year and a half ago, Patrick found a box containing a manuscript his mother had written in the late 90s. He cherished her manuscript, but he never read her writings. A few weeks after Patrick started reading her manuscript, his father discovered a later version. Patrick then decided to revive the manuscript and publish it for his

mother. “Fate had intervened, and I knew the time had come to resurrect and finish my mother’s book, The Piano Lessons.” Patrick edited the two manuscripts to finish the project. The Juvenile Fiction book is about an adolescent girl, Molly McCormick, as she navigates junior high school. The Piano Lessons will be available this winter at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and eBook. Patrick writes in the foreword of the book, “Through finishing and publishing The Piano Lessons, I’ve finally begun to liberate myself from the personal grief and anxiety of a life lived without my mother. As her son, there is no greater privilege than completing mother’s goal for her.”
What a beautiful way to honor and create a legacy for his mother. We will proudly add this book to Duchesne’s library to continue the legacy of our alumna Maureen Carver Sechser. Fashion & Faith By Meghan Conway Rowen A’97, and Fae Spittler Sterba A'80 While volunteering for the Cincinnati Art Museum, Theresa Finocchiaro Liguzinski A'79, recognized the difficulty organizations have with fundraising. She saw this as a challenge and decided to solve the problem with her lifelong love of fashion. She was confident that if she could create distinctive, hand-painted, custom scarves they could be sold as a successful fundraiser. Sales significantly surpassed her expectations and Theresa’s company, InnerBold was born. In the spring of 2020, Fae Spittler Sterba A'80, and Meghan Conway Rowen A'97, contacted Theresa to design a piece to be sold at Congé 2021. Her design contains images near and dear to Sacred Heart education. The oak leaves represent Duchesne’s name meaning “the oak.” The cardinals depict Duchesne’s mascot. Both modern and traditional Sacred Heart symbols and rosary beads adorn the scarf. The colors represent
our treasured Mater Admirabilis with blush pinks, deep blue, and gold. Working with Duchesne has been “a labor of love.” Theresa describes her high school experience at Duchesne as one that benefitted her greatly. “Our class (A'79) was so much fun! We had our small groups, but we were all friends with everyone. Duchesne empowered me to be the person I am.” It is what inspired her to design the scarf for Duchesne. “It is my hope that as this scarf is seen, worn, and gifted, we are pleasantly reminded of the devoted nuns who prayed for us, the tireless teachers who educated us, the loving parents who supported us and the indelible role Duchesne has had on the trajectory of our future.” Theresa Finocchiaro Liguzinski A'79, has been married for 34 years to Mike Liguzinski. They have two grown children, Paul and Andrea, and one grandson Luca. She works as a nurse anesthetist, specializing in cardiac surgery anesthesia and has taught anesthesia at the graduate and doctoral levels. She lives in Cincinnati.

Duchesne has played such an important role in my life that I wanted to stay involved and keep other Alumnae engaged with the school and our traditions. How has Duchesne changed since you were a student? One way I have seen Duchesne change since I was a student is the emphasis on environmental sustainability and zero-waste initiatives. Composting, solar panel energy, and the garden are providing great opportunities for students to learn and (literally) grow, I love it!

How has Duchesne changed since you were a student? I am little jealous of the fact that they serve lunch now. And not just any lunch, but nutritious, high-quality, and locally sourced food. In my day, it was my granddaddy spoiling me by bringing me Big Macs from McDonald’s.

Why did you join the Alumnae Board? I joined the Alumnae Board because I believe in the Sacred Heart education and its values. I’m thrilled to have Meg Brudney as Head of School. She is doing great things for Duchesne. How has Duchesne changed since you were a student? Duchesne has changed in that there is no more curtsying, no gloves except graduation, and no saddle shoes!
Who was your favorite teacher? Going to an all-girls school, you learn to take leadership roles. I had a hard time with math, but my favorite teacher was Mary Jo Martin. I also had a wonderful French teacher, Sister Betty Jarrett (my aunt).

I’m so proud to be a member of this group of dedicated, intelligent, philanthropic and passionate alumnae! Attending Duchesne Academy was a formative experience in my life! As a third-generation student, I have long felt connectivity to the Academy. My girls, my sisters, my dearest friends and classmates still surround me today as constants in my life. The Five Goals of the Sacred Heart still influence me today! My passion for engaging in the community matured as a student and drove me toward a career in the not-forprofit sector. If I can give one iota back to Duchesne what it gave me, I’d be thrilled. How has Duchesne changed since you were a student? Oh goodness! So much has changed at Duchesne – but the connection to the mission of the Academy remains as tangible as if I graduated yesterday. Who was your favorite teacher? My favorite class was World Religions – and my favorite teacher was Dr. Hogan!

By Trisha Clark Meehan A'04 "The first reunion attendees in 1903 could never have imagined Duchesne hosting a reunion like we had this year. We can only guess what the alumnae 100 years from now will experience." These opening remarks were made by Alumnae Board President Elisabeth Barrett A’11, at the reunion Mass in September 2020. Today, during the pandemic, we knew we must adapt and do our best to bring our alumnae together. Our reunion classes were most gracious in transitioning this previously live get-together to a virtual event. The weekend kicked off with a Friday afternoon video tour of Duchesne with Head of School Meg Huerter Brudney A’83, in which she revealed the familiar favorites and many improvements throughout the building. Next, a Duchesne trivia game was available all weekend online, challenging alumnae from all generations across the country. Friday evening, thanks to Bridget Wilwerding Flaherty A’04, and RDG Planning, we held a Zoom painting party led by watercolor artist, Lynne Hansen. Afterward, we loved receiving alumnae photos of their Duchesne circle drive paintings! Reunion Mass with Jesuits Larry Gillick and Don Doll on Saturday morning came with a few special surprises. Red roses were placed on Mary’s altar as our 50-year
alumnae would have done. The College class of 1970, due to receive honorary degrees, were surprised with a guest homilist, Michael Rossmann S.J., son of Patty Peterson Rossmann C’70. After Mass, a video link revealed the weekend’s biggest surprise: a uniform fashion show spanning the nearly 140 years of Duchesne’s history. Volunteer archivist Margo O’Connor Bieker A’71, researched Duchesne uniforms complete with blue ribbons and Prize Day medals. After developing a storyboard, the nonexisting early era uniforms were re-created by Dwayne Ibsen at Ibsen’s Costume Gallery. With the help of current parent, Ben Drickey from Torchwerks Production and Content Creation Studio, the style show was filmed and made available online for this special weekend. Uniforms were modeled by students Vialancia Becker A’23, Jayleesha Cooper A’21, Molly Donahoe A'22, Sophia Drickey A'21, Marinn Drickey A’24, Grace LaCrosse A’23, and Aderyn Lawse A’23. While missing our 50-year graduates, we wanted to honor them in a distinct way. Margo scanned the archives for fun slide presentation photos of the College and Academy classes. Each alumna also was mailed beautiful Saint Philippine Duchesne medals with notes from Meg Brudney and the Alumnae Board.

The weekend ended with multiple class Zooms, video chats, and socially distant backyard parties. While not the same as celebrated in person, the Duchesne spirit was alive and well throughout the Reunion weekend this year. With awe and tremendous gratitude, I watch as administrators, faculty and staff pivot so well to online teaching and students engaging in e-learning. They honor our Sacred Heart founders and benefactors as they continue these efforts with a combination of classroom and remote learning. While our students had to miss many of the usual social and extra-curricular activities, their educational growth did not suffer because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the 2020-2021 academic year’s theme “United in the Sacred Heart, Inspired to Act for Justice,” as a community, we are advancing our commitment to educate to a social awareness that impels us to action. We became acutely aware of racial tension that exists in our city, nation, and around the world, and I predict that we will graduate even more leaders who will pursue social justice in all facets of their lives. Donors who invest in our students remain in our prayers. We rely on generous giving to put our mission into action. We move forward confidently with Ms. Kerry Kelley providing leadership of the Board of Trustees. I pledge my full support, as I will remain a Trustee for the next two years. No matter what comes our way, we are capable, inspired and united. I am humbled to be part of this amazing and transformational community of young women in our Academy, boys and girls in our Preschool, as well as the educators, staff, parents, and donors who support them. By Meghan Conway Rowen A'97 Save the Date! In January 2020, Duchesne hosted a successful Congé, 2020 Vision, raising $550,000 for the school. By mid-March, the COVID-19 worldwide pandemic set a “new normal.” Looking ahead, we are planning a “virtual” Congé fundraiser for January 25 through January 30, 2021. At Duchesne, we fluidly adapt to changes in education, schedules, community-building. And special events like Congé require changes to celebrate Goal Four, the building of community as a Christian value. In a normal year, we would host Congé patron events, luncheons and cocktail parties to gear-up and kickoff the big event in January. We miss our community, the human interaction, and simply being at Duchesne. So, this year we developed the theme, ONE Sacred Heart, to describe our goal to regain our community spirit during the pandemic. Coming together as ONE virtually will bring back that sense of togetherness. Even with the pandemic we are committed to hosting an event that creates unity, celebrates our students, and honors Sacred Heart education in Omaha. This year we are delighted to have Angie and Neil Lisec (parents of Claire A’21), Jen and Chris Mangan (parents of Eleanor A’21), Anna and Jim Nubel (parents of Julia A’22) Laura and TJ Pattermann (parents of Lauren A’21) serve as our Congé chairs.

RAFFLE! RAFFLE! RAFFLE! Would you like to win $10,000 and support Congé 2021? Success of our Congé raffle is crucial. Last year we sold 530 $100 raffle tickets and this year we hope to sell 850 raffle tickets. The Duchesne community is loyal and loving and we thank you. Holiday Gi v ing w ith a Me a ning By Katie Risch Bakhit, A’94 While going through the influx of holiday mail and charitable donations that Duchesne often receives, one gift to the Courtney Ann Emery Ministry Fund caught our attention. This fund supports the cost of incidental expenses, above and beyond tuition, for students who receive need-based aid. This unique gift was made by Emma Duman, now a current junior, and not exactly the typical donor profile. Upon further investigation, we learned that quite a meaningful story exists around the gift. It started with John Reed Sr., whose family shares a long history with Sacred Heart education; his late wife, Ivel, graduated from Barat College and his two daughters, Jennifer A’86 and Anna Lee A’93, graduated from Duchesne Academy. Granddaughters, Maya Reed-Bouley, graduated in 2016, Emma Duman is a current junior, and three additional granddaughters, Ivy Welch, Kate and Emily Reed, began their education at Duchesne as freshmen this fall.

Emma shared that every year, Reed and his wife, Lynda, gift each of their 11 grandchildren an amount of money. The grandchildren are tasked with giving it to a charitable organization, but not without careful consideration. Each child must research and learn about their selected charitable recipient(s) in order to understand the mission of the organization, the population served, and the perceived impact of their gift. The work does not end there. After gifting their allotment of funds, each grandchild is asked to report back to one another and to Reed, sometimes in the way of a presentation, about their chosen charity or charities. Emma said, “it’s really powerful during the Christmas season, when everyone is buying gifts, to step back and think about those who need it most.” When asked why she chose the Courtney Ann Emery Ministry Fund, Emma includes among the factors in her charitable priorities that organizations must serve young women, focus on education, and maintain a personal connection to
her and her family. The fund named in honor of Courtney Emery fits all of her criteria as Emma lovingly considers Courtney’s parents, John and Sharon Emery, as second grandparents. Reed said, “The reason I started this was to impress upon our grandchildren the notion that each of us has a responsibility to continue to give back to the community to help others who are in need and to search for an area where their contribution could make a difference no matter how small. I learn from them and they learn from each other who needs funding the most.” No doubt, Emma learns valuable lessons in this family tradition. Mission accomplished!
