A Letter From the Head of School

200 YEARS OF SACRED HEART EDUCATION IN AMERICA Dear Alumnae and Friends, The year 2018 marks the bicentennial of St. Rose Philippine Duchesne bringing Sacred Heart education to America. She arrived in the New World on the Feast of the Sacred Heart, 1818. To honor her journey and the journey of our students as they encounter change, challenges, and new frontiers we have chosen the school year theme: Crossing Frontiers. The circumstances of our lives vastly differ from those of Philippine Duchesne, but the courage, confidence and faith that she needed to navigate these frontiers is paramount to our journey today.

2017-2018 School Year Prayer Spirit of the Living God, You breathed passion into the heart of Rose Philippine Duchesne. You called her to cross the waters to a new world, to bring the message of Your compassion and love. Bless our world with Philippine’s spirit of great-hearted courage. Fill us with her desire to cross frontiers and give us Philippine’s zeal to spread Your compassions and love to the ends of the earth. We ask this through Your loving Sacred Heart, whose love knows no borders or boundaries. Amen

As young women of the 21st century, our students are experiencing technology in a way that we could never have imagined, especially when we were their age. As the face of education and the workforce changes, it is imperative that our girls find the spirit and zest of Philippine in all they do and who they are in the world. Through many years of hardship on the American frontier, Philippine Duchesne opened schools for girls in Missouri and Louisiana to offer an education equal to that of young boys. At the age of 73, she was finally able to fulfill her dream of working with Native Americans. Philippine was a courageous pioneer whose faith enabled her to answer a radical call to respond to the needs of others. I hope her example teaches all of us, especially our young students, to prayerfully seek our life’s purpose in response to the times in which we live and to bravely cross our personal frontiers.

Sincerely,

Meg Huerter Brudney A83 Head of School

Bicentennial 2018 EXPERIENCING "REBECCA MOMENTS" by Katie Grudle & Cristina Hiddleston

W

hen the Society of the Sacred Heart met for the General Assembly in 2016, the Assembly created four calls in which we, in communion with the Religious of the Sacred Heart, the Associates, and Sacred Heart schools, are committed. United in our searching and open to the gifts of the Spirit in this new moment, we are called to answer these four statements: • To reach new frontiers: to go out to “set sail” as a Society and go with others to new geography and existential peripheries* • To live more humanly: to be in closer relationships with one another • To create silence: to deepen our interior life, our capacity for contemplation and for listening to the heartbeat of God in ourselves and the world • To be and to act as one Body: to revitalize our unity in diversity and to act as one Body interconnected with the world and Church. These calls challenge us to discuss and respond to all stages and in all dimensions of our life and mission. In her lifetime, Philippine learned and integrated these calls into her daily life. She wrote to her cousins in February 1818 as she prepared to leave France saying, “When my thoughts revert to that I am leaving in France- all that is dear to me- I put them aside, being intimately convinced that, as I have desired only one thing- to answer God’s call and abandon myself to His Providenceso the voyage and the trails ahead will never be as great as the help I may confidently expect from Him.” St. Rose Philippine Duchesne left her home in France and everything she knew to start a new adventure on a ship called the Rebecca. She was sailing to a new land where she did not know the language, the people, the climate, or the culture, but she felt strongly she was answering God’s call. The Society has coined the phrase “Rebecca moments,” named after the ship in which Philippine sailed from France to America, to explain those life-changing moments when anxiety and 6 DUCHESNE TODAY

uncertainty try to stop us from moving forward. Sr. Lucy Hayes RSCJ wrote to our current Formation to Mission Director Mrs. Cristina Wilwerding Hiddleston A93 last year stating, “Our general chapter borrowed something from her life. We are now talking/thinking/praying about ‘Rebecca moments,’ in our own lives—when we take risks and sail out into the deeps.” Mr. Bruce Moore, Duchesne STEAM integration specialist, reflected at our “crossing frontiers” prayer service on August 29. He spoke of the many “Rebecca moments” in his own life, including his career at Duchesne. He referred to these times as “gut churning” moments. He reflected, “Two hundred years later we stand here, in a building, in a chapel that would not stand if Philippine did not challenge that feeling inside her, to overcome that churning in her stomach at the unknown that awaited her. This year promises many moments that will challenge us with uneasiness and anxiety, but most certainly with joy and excitement.” Moore concluded to the student body with, “Remember change is something that cannot always be planned, only recognized after it has happened. Live for those ‘gut churning’ moments; they are the elements of change waiting to happen. They are the elements of new, innovative ideas. Embrace experience, and let it drive you to grow.” So, today and all year, we at Duchesne are going to consider what God calls us to do. How do we cultivate “Rebecca moments?" How do we avoid settling into repetitive behaviors that cause us to be complacent? How do we continue to climb in our experiences? How do we let the Sacred Heart of Jesus guide us? We are all called to consider what frontiers we have already crossed and what frontiers are waiting for all of us this year.

*NOTE: existential peripheries is a phrase from a pre-Papal conclave speech by then Cardinal Jorge M Bergoglio on 3 March 2013. The official published transcript translation of that speech includes the following clarification: “existential peripheries: those of the mystery of sin, of pain, of injustice, of ignorance, of doing without religious, of thought, and of all misery.”

NETWORK SPIRITUALITY CONFERENCE by Nina Bastian A18

T

his summer I was graced with the wonderful opportunity to participate in the Spirituality Conference hosted by the Network in St. Louis, Missouri. Ten faculty, as well as one other student, also attended this four-day retreat. Though this conference happens every couple of years, this was the first time students had been allowed to attend, and I had the honor of being chosen by the faculty to travel with the teachers on this spiritual journey. While there, I had the chance to hear a few keynote speakers talk about Rose Philippine, her life, and what it means to be on our journey crossing spiritual frontiers. In addition to these speakers, all of the students who came from the other Sacred Heart schools had a different activity to participate in as well; all 40 student attendees were trained in dialogue facilitating. This skill is remarkably helpful, and in this process I was able to talk to these other Sacred Heart students and learn more about them and their schools. This training is something that I have been able to take back to our very own community in groups

I lead here at Duchesne. I am grateful to the Network that I was able to learn this skill at the conference, one I will surely find useful in my life. The students from the other Sacred Heart schools were so wonderful and excited to be participating in this conference. I enjoyed every minute with them, and we would often stay up a little too late every night talking about traditions, the similarities that we share and things we do differently. We all excitedly showed each other our class rings and talked happily about our own versions of Congé. This conference also was very impactful to me in other ways. The conference was located in St. Louis, which allowed us to visit where Rose Philippine lived when she arrived in America. It was inspiring to walk the halls of her home and her first school instituted in the United States. I was able to visit the church where Rose Philippine’s remains are kept and was able to pray at her resting place. In that moment, I knew that Rose Philippine wanted me at this conference. She wanted the best for

the Society of the Sacred Heart and her students. I know that she would be proud of her studious girls at her namesake school, Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart! All of my experiences at his conference showed me why our first Sacred Heart Goal is “a personal and active faith in God.” I am glad I was able to participate in the mission and encourage others to do so next time.

Walking in TheirF ootsteps: The Courage to Trust That We Are on the Right Path By Terri Anania

H

ow do we know that we are on the right path in life and more importantly, how do we have the courage and faith to trust that it is the right path, even if we question it ourselves? Two remarkable women were able to have that faith and courage and serve as inspirational examples for all of us: St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte. This year we begin the bicentennial celebration for Philippine’s arrival in America (1818) and the beginning of her work with Native Americans, especially, the Potawatomi in Kansas, and we, as a school, are also studying and honoring another amazing woman, Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte, the first Native American woman doctor (see sidebar). Both of these women demonstrated the faith and courage to know that they were on the right path, despite overwhelming challenges at times, and their faith and courage can serve as wonderful examples for all of us.

Bicentennial Celebration ALL-SCHOOL READ FOCUSES ON LOCAL NATIVE AMERICAN TRAILBLAZER by Terri Anania

Sugar Creek Mission, KansasThe following information and excerpts are taken from Philippine Duchesne– Frontier Missionary of the Sacred Heart by Louise Callan, RSCJ, published by The Newman Press in 1954. “Philippine was 49 years old when she arrived in America in 1818. Soon she was responsible for five struggling convents: St. Charles, St. Louis and Florissant in Missouri, Grand Coteau and St. Michael’s in Louisiana. In 1841 the Jesuit fathers asked the Society to join them in a new mission with the Potawatomi tribe in eastern Kansas, along Sugar Creek.”

four baptisms and many of them were attributed to the constant prayers of Mother Duchesne, who inscribed their names in the register. The story is told that when they went to sleep at night, the Indians saw Rose Philippine praying and the next morning she was in the same position, still praying. Wondering if she really was praying all night, they put little pebbles (or acorns or leaves) on her long robe. The next morning the pebbles were still there, indicating that she did indeed pray all night. That’s why they gave her the name of She Who Prays Always.”

“She had often expressed outrage at the treatment of the Native Americans by the government, and she longed to work with them. She wanted desperately to help the Indians, but at age 71 Philippine no longer had the strength to work…Father Verhaegen insisted that Mother Duchesne, as he called her, be allowed to go, saying ‘Even if she can use only one leg, she will come. Why, if we have to carry her all the way on our shoulders, she is coming with us. She may not be able to do much work, but she will assure success to the mission by praying for us. Her very presence will draw down all manner of heavenly favors on the work.’”

In the fall of 2011, I had the opportunity to travel to Mound City, Kansas and the mission at Sugar Creek with some fellow Duchesne faculty members. I definitely felt the presence of this amazing frontier woman as I walked the soft dirt paths throughout the site of the former mission. As the sunlight filtered over my shoulders in the late afternoon sun, I found a handful of acorns scattered on the forest floor and imagined a young Potawatomi child gathering the fruit of (possibly) these same oak trees to place on Philippine’s robes as she prayed on the Kansas prairie nearly 200 years ago.

Through her years and work there, Philippine was so loved by the Potawatomi as seen in this passage, also taken from Philippine Duchesne -- Frontier Missionary of the Sacred Heart. “Every Sunday there were three or

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, canonized in 1988 by Pope John Paul II as the first female saint west of the Mississippi River, had the courage and faith to trust that her path was the right path. In this, the bicentennial year of celebration of her arrival, let us remember her passion, work, and faith in God and His path for us.

Walthill, Nebraska, The Omaha ReservationThe Susan LaFlesche Picotte Memorial Hospital sits at the top of a small hill on the west end of the town of Walthill, Nebraska on the Omaha Reservation. The hospital, over one hundred years old, was founded by her to provide medical care for her people - the Omaha People. The path of Dr. Susan LaFlesche Picotte, the first Native American woman physician, was not an easy path. As a Native American and a woman, the challenges that Susan faced were great. Our all-school read for 2017, A Warrior of the People: How Susan La Flesche Overcame Racial and Gender Inequality to Become America's First Indian Doctor, by Joe Starita, recognizes this regional hero, as well as provides a connection between contemporaries and St. Philippine Duchesne, who was living with Native Americans regionally at about the time when Picotte was born.

Author’s note: Susan’s hospital closed in the 1940s, but health care for those in the town is an important goal for the Omaha people. I have recently spent time working to help restore and preserve the hospital that Susan founded, which has fallen into great disrepair over the last few decades. An effort has begun to preserve this valuable site that is on the National Historic Landmarks list. FALL 2017 9

In the P reschool LOVE IS MRS. CHRISTIANI'S MISSION by Lauren Mueller

D

uchesne Preschool is a vibrant, caring and magical place on campus. The Preschool is thriving and is at maximum enrollment and has been named Preschool “Best of Omaha” the past two years. The Preschool offers our youngest Sacred Heart students with an amazing education steeped in the Five Goals and offering exposure to the arts, technology, service, sustainability, Spanish, music and of course Duffy, the therapy dog. However, what truly makes Duchesne Preschool the “best” is the amazing teachers, and Mrs. Linda Christiani is no exception. For the past 19 years, Mrs. Christiani has been an impactful teacher in the Preschool. She has served the school in many capacities including teaching Spanish, P.E., art and extended care and for the last 13 years, the lead teacher in the pre-k room. Mrs. Christiani has a B.S. in elementary education with a minor in early childhood and has completed many graduate level classes. She has over 30 years of experience in the classroom. As both a past and current parent of a Preschool student, I have seen first-hand how Mrs. Christiani leads the classroom. She is organized, intelligent, patient and kind. She has a true gift to make every child not only feel special, but feel the love of the

Sacred Heart of Jesus. While reflecting on her career at Duchesne, Mrs. Christiani said, “I LOVE my job! I love the children; their enthusiasm, energy and thirst to learn. They are loving and very funny.” It is no surprise that Mrs. Christiani loves teaching at a Sacred Heart school because she is Sacred Heart. I recently asked my 4-year-old what he likes best about his teacher, Mrs. Christiani. His answer was quick and simple, “She loves me!” I have a feeling that his answer is not unique. All of Mrs. Christiani’s students feel her love and for that I say, merci beaucoup, Mrs. Christiani! Très bien!

GOAL 3: HELPING HOUSTON'S TINIEST VICTIMS

W

hen Hurricane Harvey slammed into Houston, Preschool Director Sara Wachter reached out to a national organization called “Project Night Night,” to see how the preschool could help the youngest victims. The Preschool has participated in this organization’s cause for a number of years. Project Night Night provides tote bags, which are filled by volunteer sponsors, with childhood essentials for homeless children. Each bag is filled with a new blanket, book, and stuffed animal. The bags are then delivered, by the volunteers, to approved shelters in their area. In keeping with the Preschool’s Goal 3 mission, “help the needy,” they ordered 100 totes for families to sponsor and fill for the children of Houston. Within about 48 hours, all 100 bags were claimed. One preschool mom, Brook Hudson, posted a picture of her daughter Charlotte on Facebook explaining what she was doing to help the tiniest refugees of the hurricane. A friend of Brook’s saw the post and mobilized her co-workers to help the cause, and within a couple of days, they had raised $1,170. This was enough to purchase items to fill 50 more Project Night Night bags. This act of incredible generosity shows the power of the human spirit and the positive side of social media. Filling these tote bags, provides the Preschool children with a meaningful way to help the recent devastation in Houston, home to one of our sister Sacred Heart schools. Most importantly, the children understand where the bags are going and why; it is a great lesson in selflessly helping others.

Project Night Night Project Night Night's mission is to provide free Night Night Packages to homeless children. Each Night Night Package contains a new security blanket, an age-appropriate children’s book, and a stuffed animal — all nestled in a new canvas tote. Project Night Night works with tens of thousands of individuals each year. To learn more information visit: www.projectnightnight.org

Armed and clad in the 5 Goals, we are prepared to shine wherever our futures take us. -Kamsi Achigbu A17

Student Address: Kamsi Achigbu

Below is text from the student address given by Kamsi Achigbu A17 during Duchesne's Commencement Ceremony on May 25, 2017. Kamsi is currently a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Administration, faculty, family, and friends, thank you for being here with us. Not just tonight, but all throughout high school. With your love and support, the class of 2017 proudly wears these white gowns. Four years ago, we were several inches shorter, our voices were several octaves higher, and we held books. They came in all sizes and colors, some heavier than others, clutched closely to our chests or stuffed into backpacks. We all knew the books we would read had a large impact on our grade, but our entire Duchesne experience is a story in itself. There are many different places this story could start: St. Madeleine Sophie's war-torn France where the Society of the Sacred Heart sprung to life. Or 1881, when Duchesne was founded. As important as they are, let's pick up where our tale begins; sitting on the carpeted floor of Mrs. Moeschler's room during freshman orientation, packed tightly like sardines, staring wide eyed at our soon-to-be sisters around us: that day was our opening line, as meaningful as if Dickens had written it himself. Each chapter since then has been incredibly rich. We entered Duchesne's halls unsure, but that innocence was a gift; every lesson, every experience that touched our open minds, we internalized and made it our own. With a ravenous hunger, we studied maps of the world, graphs and planes, and tried, as best we could, to understand passive voice. While we knew we couldn't learn everything at once, we were willing to try, and try as hard as possible. The shining eyes and hushed giggles of our freshmen selves gave way to our second year. And with sophomore year came iPads, and as a result the entire world at our fingertips, free for us to us as wisely, or unwisely, as a 15-year-old can. But, as with every challenge we've faced, we conquered it together, encouraging each other along the way and

"

learning to balance work well done with rest well earned. Perhaps that's why we wore the black sweaters and shining rings of junior year as badges of honor. Finally upperclassmen, there was an air of assurance that surrounded each of us. That confidence followed us into our final year, guiding us through applications, overflowing emotions, and senioritis. We've experienced 8 semesters of rigorous sculpting. Through all of these experiences, Duchesne shaped us to be thoughtful, intelligent, community oriented young women. And even more than that, we learned to read. Not in the way a child learns to read, hesitantly piecing letters into words into sentences. We learned to read with meaning. Pluck a line from a page, from the world around us, breathe in its essence, and strip it down to its true meaning. We understand that a word is more than a word, our actions are more than just actions, and that we are more than just ordinary girls, because underneath our skin is Sacred Heart tradition, bubbling through our veins like liquid gold, forever linking us to a lineage of greatness. Now, looking back is easy, but tonight we must square our shoulders forward. There's always a tinge of uncertainty that comes with graduating. Did I study enough? Did I mature enough? Am I ready? Well, A'17, we're more than just ready: we're fortified. Armed and clad in the 5 Goals, we are prepared to shine wherever our futures take us. With personal, active faiths in God, we can present ourselves with humility and thankfulness for the talents each of us have been given. With a deep respect for intellectual values, we bring critical thinking and perception, which we will use to benefit society and take action in our world. And, in helping to grow our community both locally and globally, we will also continue to grow as individuals. Duchesne has taught us to be strong, faith-filled, courageous protagonists in a world that too often tries to discourage women from doing so. However, we will not be erased out this story. We are the sharp-witted Elizabeth Bennetts with an unshakable sense of self worth. We are as strong as Alexandra of O Pioneers, and as inquisitive and loving as Scout Finch. Each and every one of us is about to coauthor the greatest piece of literature of all time: the story of the world. Our story. And so, after four years of reading, we have reached the end of a wonderful book. We've read the last page, closed the cover, and now reach eagerly for the next volume. Congratulations ladies, and thank you for everything. FALL 2017 13

N eighborly Love: Building community Down the street by Katie Grudle

L

ast year, the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals held their fiveyear review of Duchesne Academy and Preschool. As a result, it was encouraged that our community did more outreach right here in our own neighborhood. Goal Three is alive and well in our school and around Omaha, but Duchesne sits in the most diverse zip code in the state of Nebraska. Some of our neighbors, the people whom our students see on a daily basis when they come and go from school, were in need of some extra help. Yates Community Center is located at 32nd and Davenport, just a few blocks southeast of Duchesne. It mainly teaches skills to refugees and other immigrants which help them to be successful in our community. Omaha Public Schools Teacher Administrative Center, right down the street from Duchesne, offers English as a second language courses, citizenship class, sewing classes and lab, computer lab, and an early childhood center. Since last year, Duchesne has worked to have a presence at Yates. A small group of seniors last spring went weekly to volunteer their time and talents at Yates as teacher assistants through their Catholic Social Teaching theology class. The juniors on retreat for the past two years have learned about refugees and then participated in group activities and in a community picnic in the fall. This year on September 8, the juniors learned about refugees, held a first-hand account from neighbor Abdi of his time in a refugee camp in Somalia and about his initial experiences in America, resettling in Omaha. The juniors also were partnered with the Yates preschoolers to

School News Claire Sapone A12, creative media producer at Duchesne, reflects on an experience she had with a neighbor, immigrant woman after they had shared a meal together: Sitting with this woman was such a sweet moment. Caring for Africa LIFE CHANGING SERVICE TRIP TO UGANDA Traveling to Uganda in June 2017 with several other Duchesne students and faculty was a very eye-opening journey and like nothing I had ever experienced before. The culture was absolutely beautiful. The people we met were very welcoming and kind, and the traditional dancing was incredible. Getting to know families and RSCJ was one of the best experiences while on the trip. Sitting down and sharing meals and conversations with some of the sisters was so meaningful and memorable. Fascinating to me was going to some of the different schools which allowed us to know how students operate in their everyday lives, find out which subjects interest them the most, and talk about everything they enjoy about being students, and the RSCJ at the school were absolutely lovely. Visiting the Jesuit Refugee Center and AIDS clinic made it more clear to us why we were on this trip by allowing us to see the importance of why we need to help refugees and people struggling with diseases. I am very glad we were able to donate items and money while we were there. Even though it was a small action, I still felt like I made a difference in at least one person’s life. The Duchesne Uganda trip this past summer was one of the best experiences of my life. I did struggle a couple times while on the trip, but what is a journey without hurdles? Even if I had to

deal with some struggles again, I would go back in a heartbeat. The people of Uganda have left a handprint on my heart and loving memories in my mind. I am extremely thankful for the things I experienced and hope others would be inclined to go on this service trip and learn to appreciate other cultures like I have.

One of the fastest growing ministries and new vocations in the Society of the Sacred Heart is the small east African nation of Uganda. The RSCJ (Religious de la Sacre Coeur de Jesus) there have opened new schools and are serving thousands of young women throughout the country. In June, 12 Duchesne students and one Duchesne graduate joined Development Director Katie Risch Bakhit A94 and Principal Dr. Laura Hickman A85 on a two-week journey through the country visiting our Sacred Heart sisters and learning about their culture. The trip included many opportunities to learn about the one million refugees that have flooded into Uganda over the past year, mostly from South Sudan. In fact, during our visit, the 16 DUCHESNE TODAY

United Nations hosted a special emergency meeting in Kampala to address the issue and in particular to identify new sources of food resources for the region. Thus, it was not a big surprise to learn recently that the Ugandan government has suspended all food aid programs to schools in the country. While most of our Sacred Heart schools in Uganda will not be overly affected by this decision, one of our schools is in danger of closing if they cannot find other means of feeding their students. Karamojo is a region in the northeast of Uganda; it is traditionally very poor, even by Ugandan standards. The RSCJ were one of the first groups to open a school in the region for

To that end, the Academy has sponsored a few free-dress days to collect money for our Sacred Heart sister school in danger of closing in Uganda, and on September 28, Duchesne campus ministry sent a check to Irene Cullen RSCJ, in the RSCJ Uganda Kenya Mission Support Office for $1000. Sr. Cullen was overcome with gratitude saying, “That is wonderful. We have just about reached the goal, and I am sure now we will.” If you would like to support the RSCJ in their mission to keep this school open in Uganda, please contact Irene Cullen RSCJ

MISSION TO HELP MALAWI I cherished my time at Duchesne in so many ways, but did not fully understand the impact Sacred Heart values and Goals would have on my life in the future. As a junior in college, I got involved in fundraising for the shipment of $500,000 of medical supplies to three hospitals in the northern region of Malawi, a small, landlocked country in southeastern Africa, consistently ranked the fifth poorest in the world. My group received a grant from Project Cure, a nonprofit that donates medical supplies to third world countries, and we raised the remaining $24,000 for shipment costs. Our next mission was to go to Malawi at the end of May to implement and see through the foundational, community, and infrastructural plan. Our mission trip was a success, but while we were visiting we realized many other underlying issues contributing to poor health and issues within the educational infrastructure. We decided to come back to the states and begin a new mission, Pads for Education. Each month, young girls have no choice but to miss time in school due to lack of feminine hygiene products. Before they can go onto secondary school, our equivalent of high school, they have to pass exams. As one could imagine, many of these girls do not pass because they are forced to miss about two full months out of the short school year. Their education stops at this point, after only completing our equivalent of our eighth grade. Our project hopes to tackle the vicious cycle of poverty by helping support the economy, education, and women’s health of Malawian villages. To support the economy, the project will provide women the supplies and knowledge of making reusable pads and selling them to the community. A Malawian elder woman passes down sanitation information and education regarding their use to the girls in her community, honoring their matriarchal customs.

by Willow Head A11 We are proud to support education and women’s health, because our pads will help keep girls in school, allowing them to have the ability to continue their education. As a fourth generation Duchesne student, the Goals and values of a Sacred Heart education have been ingrained in my everyday life. I have prioritized a deep respect for intellectual values and a social awareness which impels to action. These Goals have inspired me to identify a problem and try to inspire change. Duchesne taught me the value of education and gave me all the tools to succeed; I strive to instill these same values halfway across the world.

DREAMING AT DASH

O

by Bruce Moore

ur world in STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics) has continued to progress at Duchesne with the opening of the full DREAM lab on the second floor in the college wing of our building. The space, which previously contained the library stacks, has been transformed into a multifaceted maker space. In the updated space is a 20-seat iMac lab, as well as a Lulzbot 3D printer. Additionally, new this year in the space are broadcasting, photography, and audio recording equipment, VR (Virtual Reality) and 360° video equipment, a digital embroidery sewing machine, a computerized numerical control (CNC) machine and a CO2 laser cutter and engraver. Many teachers have taken advantage the newly designed DREAM Lab area by regularly scheduling their classes in the space and using the technologies to support curriculum in their areas, and students are utilizing the technologies to create projects for their classes. These range from

individual 3D printing projects based on their readings for literature courses to motion/ acceleration lab work in physics class. There are currently six courses and or clubs that call the DREAM Lab home, including digital photography, AP computer science, and robotics. Also offered this year is the inaugural semester of Design Academy, a course created to work specifically with the technologies in the DREAM Lab and teach students the process of design from concept to client interview and finally, to prototyping. There are many possibilities for growth and expanded use, including Scott Quinn and his garden club collaborating with our lab to create a “living green wall” within the lab that will help students learn about plant growth and the factors that contribute to

healthy sustainable plants. The club will use light meters and moisture sensors to track and record the needs and usage to learn our living system. This project is currently in the planning concept phase, and we hope to begin installation sometime in January.

If you are interested in learning more about the DREAM Lab at Duchesne, please contact Bruce Moore, STEAM integration specialist, at bmoore@duchesneacademy.org.

COMPOSTING: LEADING THE WAY FOR OMAHA SCHOOLS by Eric Krakowski

S

ustainability efforts at Duchesne continue to broaden and improve. Duchesne is proud to announce that on September 1, 2017 it became the first school in the city of Omaha to implement a campus-wide composting program. A waste audit conducted in February revealed that 49% of Duchesne’s trash could be diverted away from the landfill and toward recycling and composting. As a result of the audit, Duchesne has partnered with Hillside Solutions and Soil Dynamics of Gretna to improve recycling and to begin composting. Composting containers are placed in the cafeteria to collect food waste and other organic materials such as used napkins, paper plates, and cups. The containers are picked up each week by Soil Dynamics and taken to a large-scale compost facility located in Ashland. A second waste audit took place on October 18 and will hopefully reveal an improved diversion rate away from the landfill. 18 DUCHESNE TODAY

Duchesne has also joined Jesuit schools and other Sacred Heart Network schools in the “Ignatian Carbon Challenge 2.0” sponsored by the Ignatian Solidarity Network. Duchesne has already been recognized as one of only three schools in the program to earn a “Green Star” rating for its efforts. Duchesne has made great strides in the past year toward the school goal of becoming “Zero Waste” by the year 2030. Please join us in working hard to become responsible stewards of creation by exploring options for sustainable practices in your home or workplace!

If you have any questions about the sustainability efforts at Duchesne or would like to learn more about what you can do, please contact Eric Krakowski at ekrakowski@duchesneacademy.org.

Sustainability Committee members Olivia Youngblood, Tess Doyle and Lucy Peterson A18 helped kick-off the school-wide composting effort.

H eritage of the H eart: Retracing the Steps of our Foundresses by Erin Leick A05

L

ast year, my partner in crime from my Duchesne senior year Eveline Gnabasik Bethune asked if I wanted to go on the Academy alumnae trip to France, and I jumped at the chance. Neither of us was sure what to expect as we boarded the plane, but we knew we were in for an adventure. The advertised description of the tour said we would trace the steps of Saints Madeline Sophie Barat and Rose Philippine Duchesne, but we were sure it would be more than that! Our group had a few days in Paris to get our bearings while we saw some of the greatest churches and art museums in the world—including the Rodin Museum located inside a former Sacred Heart school. Across hundreds of years and around the world, it felt as though we were back at 36th and Burt. Just down the street, we were able to take a moment to pray at Sophie’s shrine, where her body is preserved. I’ll never forget it. From this stop, we next headed off to an equally important point of our trip: a trek to the sites in France where Sophie and Rose Philippine Duchesne once lived and worked. We had read Sophie’s Fire, a novel about Sophie’s young life, in advance of the trip, which gave us some historical context. It would have been an exceptional trip regardless, but traveling with the Duchesne family made it all the more special. The long bus rides between our destinations became time to get to know each other, reminisce about that good old days, and learn about what’s happening at Duchesne Academy today. As we walked in the footsteps of these two women to whom we owe so much, we had many discussions about the Goals and how those were truly the guiding principles of their lives. Every one of them was at play on the trip in the sites we visited. When I explained to friends and coworkers that this alumnae trip would be with some people I knew and some people I did not, I found myself reassuring them that I knew I would have a good time. As we took a boat tour around Amiens, hiked the impressive ancient structures in Lyon, and tasted wine in Bourgogne, I realized that many people would enjoy this trip just because of the sights. That said, I know that it is only my Duchesne community that will understand the lightness I felt as I entered Sophie’s childhood home and the happiness in my heart as I saw the site where the two women first met and where they said their final goodbyes. The enduring connection with the Sacred Heart is what made Duchesne such a special place, and this trip was the perfect way to find that again.

Alumnae Updates A16 ALUMNAE OFFER ADVICE ON STEAM CAREER AND MAJORS by Bruce Moore

ALUMA JOURNEYS WITH PEACE CORPS TO SAMOA

Theresa Bracht, Kristin Sheridan, Ally Geary, Lauren Stierman, Brittany Wichman, Emily Zhang and Carolyn Marar (all A16) returned to their alma mater to discuss their STEM fields of study.

In August, the very first group activity was held in the DREAM Lab. During the event, we welcomed a panel of A16 alumnae back to Duchesne for an opportunity to sit down with our current students during lunch. The group led an open panel discussion about STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers and their experiences during their first year of college. This event was organized by Kristin Sheridan who is pursuing a career in chemical-biological engineering at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology). This forum was sponsored by the Society of Women Engineers, a group that Sheridan is currently participating in at M.I.T. During our discussion, current students listened to and asked questions about career fields such as biomedical engineering, chemical engineering, chemistry, computer science, financial engineering, math and mechanical engineering. Sheridan was joined by Theresa Bracht (mechanical engineering at Cornell University), Ally Geary (computer science at Duke University), Carolyn Marar (biomedical engineering at Johns Hopkins University), Lauren Stierman (math at Colorado College), Brittany Wichman (chemistry at SLU), and Emily Zhang (financial engineering at Columbia University). Students were engaged and their response to this event was wonderful. We look forward to hosting more events relating to STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics) related careers in the future, especially those in which our alumnae can serve as role models for our current students.

Laika Lewis A13, recent graduate of Grinnell College with a double major in biology and political science, is currently serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Samoa. How/why did you get involved with the Peace Corps? I want to give back to my community in almost everything that I do, noting that my community doesn't stop in my backyard. Tell us about what you will be doing in Samoa: In Samoa, I will spend my first 10 weeks in a village, learning the language (Samoan) and culture. Then, I begin my two years of service as a primary education literacy English teacher. How did Duchesne prepare you or influence you in your life for this next step? Duchesne was a major force in helping mold who I am today, guiding me to serving in the Peace Corps. I look forward to utilizing every single Sacred Heart Goal within my years of service in Samoa. Look for an update from Laika highlighting her first few months in Samoa in our spring issue of Duchesne Today.

Molly Abboud A14 worked for Nebraska Senator Deb Fischer in Washington D.C. during the summer of 2017. She lived on Capitol Hill and worked at the Senate as an intern. Molly’s focus was on three areas: legislative research, press, and constituent services. Molly said, “I learned a lot about the legislative process by understanding the needs of Nebraskans and watching Senator Fischer work to fulfill each of them. It was a wonderful experience to spend a summer learning from such an amazing woman like Senator Fischer.” Currently, she is majoring in advertising with a minor in public relations at Marquette University.

Taylor Anderson A15 is a senior at UNL. She was recently featured in The Daily Nebraskan, UNL’s student newspaper, for her work with the University’s Environmental Sustainability Committee. Her goal is to get the greek system in Lincoln to be more responsible and accountable for their waste. Initiatives include eliminating the use of Styrofoam, encouraging recycling, and increasing composting within the greek houses on campus.

Emma Bonebrake A12 worked at Duchesne as a student teacher in the fall of 2016 in the campus ministry department and then went on to graduate from Creighton University in May 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in theology. Currently, she teaches world religions to freshman at Duchesne’s sister school in Chicago, Josephinum Academy, also called “the Jo.” She and her husband, David, married in Omaha on September 9, 2017 and now call Chicago home!

Childrenswear designer Kaitlyn Fitzgerald A13, graduated from Parsons School of Design with a BFA in fashion design. During her time in New York, she has gathered work experience at Rachel Comey, Creatures of the Wind, LeSportsac, and Luisa et la Luna, and now works as the childrenswear design assistant at Kate Spade. Fitzgerald was recently chosen by The Council of Fashion Designers

Julia Hall A16, a sophomore at Iowa State University, is in the process of furthering some research she recently did for her gender and communication class focusing on how single-sex education affects girl’s perception of gender roles. She is also just beginning a separate research project about how social media affects the way we perceive a first lady and how we expect her to communicate. For this project: Julia reached out to the Obama administration’s deputy digital strategist who now works for the Obama Foundation, and she will be interviewing her soon. Additionally, Julia was officially elected to be the vice president of membership on executive committee for her Pi Beta Phi chapter, as head of recruitment. Julia said her experience as a Duchesne student ambassador prepped her for this role. “I feel like I have come full circle from Duchesne, and I am so excited to be doing what I love.” FALL 2017 25

Reunion Awards Très Bien Award

Each year, the Très Bien Award is presented to an outstanding alumna who exemplifies in her life the values of a Sacred Heart education. Fae Spittler Sterba A80 has single handedly created a tighter knit community while “wearing Duchesne on her sleeve,” literally! Goal 4, “the building of community as a Christian value” comes to mind when thinking of Fae Sterba. Fae graduated in 1980 and her best friends from Duchesne are still her dearest friends of today. When asked to describe how they feel about their friend, Liz Killips said, “Fae is the truest kind of friend. She is someone who would literally give you the shirt off your back or more accurately, the earrings from her ears! She is the perfect combination of loyalty and fun. It's not a party without her! We love her!” She and her husband, Mike, have three children – two daughters, Hannah and Zoe who attended Duchesne, graduating in 2009 and 2014. It was during her daughters’ days at Duchesne, when Fae’s love of helping her alma mater came into play. Her involvement with the Booster Club and Congé shop started a craze! Fae’s creative mind, not to mention long hours of hard work and research, led the school

to the creation of one of Nebraska’s famous clothing lines – Duchesne Bookstore Wear! Fae has the keen ability to think outside the box and is eager to make sure everyone has a piece of Duchesne to wear in their respective communities. She is adventurous, is a risk-taker, and is always on-trend. The Duchesne Bookstore would not be what it is today without Fae. Fae creates a sense of belonging and displays her positive community vibe, who wouldn’t want to be a part of her joy? We are so blessed to have her here at Duchesne–très bien!

M erci Beaucoup Award The Merci Beaucoup award is presented annually to an outstanding person or persons who visibly demonstrates the five Goals of the Sacred Heart. Honored this year were Duchesne parents Wes and Jeannette Nelson.

At the award ceremony in September, Katie Risch Bakhit, development director said, "It’s a real gift when the parent of a current student jumps in head first, lending his/her expertise to a project. It’s an extra special gift when said parent has three daughters in total and plans to be around for ten years. Furthermore, it’s a slam dunk when you don’t get just one parent who shares his/her willingness to help out but instead get both parents, sort of like a two-for-one, both of whom demonstrate a genuine love for Duchesne and an unending commitment to helping out wherever their time and talent is most needed. As parents of three Duchesne alumnae, Katie, Abby, and Emily, this is precisely what Wes and Jeanette Nelson have done for Duchesne.”

Award presenter Katie Risch Bakhit A94 and Wes & Jeanette Nelson.

Congé set designers and builders for seven years running and with Wes as an inaugural Men for Duchesne member, they have always maintained Duchesne’s best interest as their top priority. Wes and Jeanette, Duchesne Academy thanks you for all of your dedication. Merci beaucoup!

Through all of their years of volunteering, including both as

FROM THE 2017-2018 BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR Dear Duchesne Community, It was a very busy summer of construction and planning at Duchesne. Our lovely 136-year-old school received some terrific enhancements, including a generous donor’s great vision in seeing how our campus could remain alive with light after dark. Our historic school now literally glows, and its beauty can be seen at all hours. I encourage you to find time to drive by the campus after dark to see the impact of this new campus-wide outdoor lighting. The Board of Trustees approved and began executing an infrastructure improvement plan that had been on the drawing board for more than three years. Very old and obsolete steam boilers used for heating were replaced with modern, reliable and energy efficient systems. Air conditioning was added to the classrooms and chapel. Many interior lighting improvements were also made. Key historic rooms were renovated and redecorated such as the library, and what was known as the Stuart Art Gallery is now a beautifully renovated public space called the Sister Joanne Fitzpatrick Grand Hall. You may have heard from an excited student you know that the infamous student lounge area in the lower level was updated with new paint, carpet, and furniture. The excitement of an occasional mouse living in an old couch is gone for our students, but they seem to be enjoying the new space. Please stop by Duchesne anytime to see these exciting changes! The second phase of these infrastructure improvements will occur in the summer of 2018. We will be replacing old windows so that our building will be more energy efficient and can fully benefit from the new heating, cooling and lighting systems. Our students are very environmentally aware and are undoubtedly proud that our building is now Energy Star certified by the Environmental Protection Agency due to its energy efficiency and, importantly, it has also become a more comfortable place for learning and worship. As we wrap up the exciting projects mentioned above, we have also embarked on planning the next steps in our future. We began a strategic planning process using an experienced consultant to help us dream and think about the opportunities ahead. The process invited input from many constituencies such as alumnae, parents, teachers, board members and members of the broader community. We expect to present the plan to the Board of Trustees for discussion late this year. The timing is perfect, because the new strategic plan will help us chart our course for the next few years as the initiatives described above are completed. I am continually humbled when I witness the time that many volunteers contribute to the school and observe the generosity of our many donors. The new upgrades to our infrastructure, preservation of our historic school, and exciting initiatives like the new DREAM Lab cannot occur without your support. We are truly blessed.

Gratefully,

Todd Foje Chair, Board of Trustees

hroughout the years, the Religious of the Sacred Heart have poured time, energy, and untold resources into educating young women. The nuns worked tirelessly to create a legacy, and their steadfast generosity transformed girls into women. Together, the students of Duchesne witnessed a community born of hard work, love of learning, love of God, and love of one another that defines the schools of the Sacred Heart. From the signature Sacred Heart ring to the devotion to Mater, these traditions become an expression of this bond. While holding steadfast to tradition, the RSCJ insisted on cuttingedge educational trends. From Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat’s first Plan of Studies to the Congé play-days, the nuns instilled a love of intellectual achievement and pure fun. Part of that fun could be seen in their turning a blind eye to a little mischief; they knew that playfulness refreshed the mind. Duchesne has always been committed to each girl’s total development…spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and physical. Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat once said, “For the sake of one child, I would have founded the Society.” In a real sense, each girl at Duchesne is that one child. Sr. Joanne Fitzpatrick is just one of the beloved RSCJ’s through the years at Duchesne Academy to exemplify St. Madeline Sophie’s vision. To honor the tenure of Sr. Joanne Fitzpatrick, who served as teacher, counselor, and administrator at Duchesne Academy through various eras from the 1950s through the early 2000s, the former Stuart Art Gallery has been renamed: The Joanne Fitzpatrick Grand Hall, affectionately known as the “The Fitz.”

I

n 1800, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat founded the Society of the Sacred Heart and, thus, began the legacy of Sacred Heart education throughout the world. As a woman who was very possibly “ahead of her time,” Madeleine Sophie realized at the tender age of twenty what she considered two important “truths:” 1) all young women should receive an education and 2) educated women would have the capability to change the world for the better. Well over two hundred years later, Madeleine Sophie’s earliest visions of providing an education that is deeply rooted in prayer and a love for Jesus Christ thrives at Duchesne Academy. In both name and spirit, Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat remains the inspiration for the Sophie Society.

In this struggle concerning education, the Heart of Jesus asks from us not our blood but our minds. We must strengthen our studies by intellectual work. Present day society will be saved by education. -Madeleine Sophie Barat

The Sophie Society was created in 2011 to provide an endowment for the future stability and growth of faculty salaries so we might attract and retain the most qualified, dedicated, and inspired educators for future generations of Duchesne students. Through the years, Duchesne has grown enrollment substantially while continuing to maintain a 9 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio and preserving our sense of community through small class sizes. To maintain enrollment and avoid drastically increasing tuition each year, it was vital that we create an endowment that specifically focuses on faculty salaries. As with any endowment, the corpus is invested in a special account and remains there into perpetuity. The funds earned annually through the market return are used to support faculty and staff salaries and ensure that Duchesne continues to offer competitive salaries and maintain an exceptional teaching faculty. In May of 2017, six years after its inception, funds earned from the Sophie Society endowment were used for the first time. As a great surprise to a very unsuspecting audience of Sacred Heart educators, Meg Brudney, head of school, in partnership with the Board of Trustees, provided a bonus to every member of the faculty and staff at Duchesne. Without a doubt, it was a gift appreciated by all. Some spent their surprise bonus on travel, while others paid household bills or treated themselves to a spa day. The Sophie Society is a unique opportunity to directly support Sacred Heart educators at Duchesne. There are various memberships within the Sophie Society.

A

s an alumna or friend of Duchesne, you already know the legacy of St. Philippine Duchesne and her commitment to education. Her selfless life work and sacrifices set the foundation for thousands of young women. You can help secure the future of Duchesne Academy for thousands more young women through thoughtful, long-term gift planning. The Saint Philippine Duchesne Heritage Society consists of individuals and couples who have made provisions for Duchesne in their estate planning. Planned gifts may include appreciated stock, real estate, life insurance and other forms of will designations. By working with a financial planner, attorney, or tax advisor, many people discover that in addition to ensuring the vitality of the school, charitable giving strategies are often accompanied by valuable financial benefits and tax advantages. If you do not currently have a tax advisor or a designated person to handle your estate planning, we can help you do that. The future of Duchesne depends on estate giving. For more information on how you can become a member of the Heritage Society including receiving assistance in contacting an expert in estate planning, or to let us know that you have remembered Duchesne in your estate plans, please call the development office at 402-810-9989.

n Saturday, February 10, 2018, the Duchesne community will celebrate one of Duchesne’s oldest and best traditions, Congé! This year’s event theme, “We are Duchesne, The Tradition Continues…” focuses on what makes Duchesne Academy a unique and personal experience for every student. This year is special in that we are celebrating the 200th anniversary of the arrival of our foundress and namesake, Saint Rose Philippine Duchesne, onto American soil. The legacy she has left for all 24 Sacred Heart schools in our United States and Canada Province is profound, spiritual, and extraordinary. Omaha’s Duchesne Academy is the first school in the United States to be named after her, and for that, we celebrate!
