Duchesne Academy in 2016
Get the facts about the Duchesne Academy of today.
Duchesne Today is a newsletter for the alumnae and friends of Duchesne Academy, Duchesne College and Duchesne Preschool. It is published twice a year. Printed on recycled paper.
FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL
Dear Alumnae and Friends, This fall I had the pleasure of hosting an alumnae
event to capture a bit of Duchesne’s rich history from three extraordinary women who graduated from the Academy in 1949: Marilyn Curran Ryan, Nancy Ortman Ryan and Madeleine Ortman Begley. As I listened to their many heartwarming, entertaining and educational stories, I was struck by the idea that the more things change, the more they stay the same: a Sacred Heart education still lovingly develops a solid foundation for life. While that underlying theme has not changed, Duchesne has evolved over time. I know from personal experience this is true after being away for more than 20 years. I returned to a student body that had doubled in size, with more applicants than seats. And while Duchesne still provides academic rigor that challenges our girls to be critical thinkers and asks them to use their knowledge and hearts to make the world a better place, an added component is exposing our girls to technology and 21st century skills to prepare them for the ever-changing world they will encounter as adults. Our robust campus ministry department offers a medley of faith-building opportunities, and our tightknit community of faculty and staff embody Goal 3 (Building community as a Christian value). Today, it is the lay personnel who resolutely imbue and teach the love of the Heart of Jesus to every Academy and Preschool student. It has been a delight to return and experience Duchesne as it is today, to know as much as the school has progressed, it remains steeped in the beautiful traditions and values known in a Sacred Heart education. If you have not been back for a while, I invite you to return to Duchesne with your families or classmates for a tour or to visit our amazing bookstore! I promise, as you enter the school it will feel like home.
Blessings,

FROM THE STUDENT BODY PRESIDENT The following piece is taken from a speech given by senior Ellie Helton at opening convocation on the first day of school.
I
want to take you back to a place that has stuck with me throughout my life, my somewhere over the rainbow. Over the years, I have often thought of what it would be like to visit the setting of one of my favorite stories, The Wizard of Oz, a mystical place where munchkins and witches exist. To me, Duchesne and Oz have many similar characteristics. Right as someone steps foot into the halls of Duchesne, he or she immediately feels as if they are in a special place, just as Dorothy did in the magical land of Oz. The characters in The Wizard of Oz go on a journey to find themselves, and Duchesne creates the same environment that helps not only the students grow, but the faculty and staff as well. Throughout my four years at Duchesne, I have found my second home. As a freshman, I was afraid that I would never fit in or find friends in this new world filled with intelligent, funny and kind young women. However, my fears were without foundation, and I quickly realized that this school was not anything like I anticipated, as the community of Duchesne welcomed me with open arms and made me feel right at home. Now I am lucky to say that I have joined the sisterhood of Duchesne. I have found a place where I am lucky to say that I have thousands of girls, past, current and future students, that I am able to call my sisters. Like Dorothy’s friends, my sisters have intelligence and heart and courage. My experience at Duchesne is something that I would not trade for anything. Here I have learned everything from World Cultures, British Literature, math and science and more, but the lessons that have had the most impact on me are the qualities of friendship, leadership and compassion that Duchesne makes sure to instill in each and every one of its students. I want to remind you, current students, faculty, parents, alums and retirees, that you will always be welcomed back into the halls of Duchesne and we will always hold a place for you in our hearts. Never forget that there is no place like home. Ellie HeltonA17 Student Body President

The Passing of the
Torch by: Katie grudle
O
n Monday, August 29, the Duchesne Community celebrated a milestone in the history of the school. Ten Religious of the Sacred Heart were involved with the commissioning mass of the lay faculty and staff of Duchesne Academy and Preschool. Of those Religious, it included many alumnae, past faculty and staff, retiring Religious, current board members and the current Provincial and Superior General Elect Barbara Dawson, RSCJ. The women arrived to celebrate the weekend together and reminisce over stories of Duchesne when they went to school here, as well as from when they worked and lived here. The women helped to move Lucy Hayes, RSCJ, and JoEllen Sumpter, RSCJ, out of their home. Much of their furniture will go to Chicago for the new novitiate for the novices in the Society of the Sacred Heart. August 29 was chosen as a special day to commission the lay people because it is St. Rose Philippine Duchesne’s birthday. The celebration started off with a luncheon with the Religious and the student council members. The Religious shared many stories with the students: comparing their Congés to today’s celebration of Congé, their vocation stories and many stories of their time at Duchesne as a student or as
a faculty/staff member. Katy Smith A17, senior student council representative, enjoyed hearing all of the stories, recalling how Muriel Cameron, RSCJ, shared a story about how the Religious were having dinner with some parents and afterwards the dads all ventured down the slide fire escape. Margaret Munch, RSCJ, A54, C58 wrote to Head of School Meg Huerter Brudney A83 after the occasion that she was “especially impressed by the wholesomeness and simplicity of the students at the luncheon. They were precious. Duchesne is indeed in good hands. I am so happy that I was able to be there.” At 2:00 p.m., the Duchesne community, including current students and alumnae, current and past faculty and staff, current and past board of trustees, current and past parents, associates and many special friends of Duchesne, gathered at St. Cecilia’s Cathedral to celebrate the Liturgy of the Word and Eucharist with the Most Reverend Archbishop George Lucas and many Archdiocesan priests and Omaha area Jesuits concelebrating. Sister Dawson stressed in her welcome that the Religious “are entrusting the great legacy of the mission of the Society of the Sacred Heart to the lay members of the Sacred Heart family of Omaha. We do not do this lightly.

Barbara Dawson, RSCJ leads the commitment renewal and blessing.
The congregation included newly retired nuns JoEllen Sumpter, RSCJ and Lucy Hayes, RSCJ.
We have the strong conviction and know that the seeds of the Society’s mission have taken deep root here in Omaha among the families we have served…. Saint Philippine’s great hearted courage has been alive here since the early days of the Society’s coming to the ‘western frontier.’ Today is her birthday, so it is fitting that the mission, which was a gift given to her by God and Saint Madeleine Sophie, be passed one to you who love her and the Society so much.” After communion, Sister Dawson then asked the faculty, staff and board of trustees to stand for a renewal of their commitment as educators and receive a blessing. The lay people of Duchesne stood with conviction responding to Sister Dawson’s responses to live a life rooted in prayer and discernment, to have courage as Philippine did, to be inspired by the confident love of Sophie, to live the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria and to always allow the Sacred Heart of Jesus to be their light, strength and joy throughout their lives. The lay people knew this moment was going to be important, but did not realize how paramount this moment was in the history of Duchesne Academy and Preschool and how much responsibility

n the Feast of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, celebrated at the May 24, 2016 Honors Day, a new altar was commissioned and blessed in the Duchesne chapel. Lovingly created by retiring Director of Building and Grounds Tom Quest, the altar is a beautiful expression of our Sacred Heart charism and the laity who have embraced the teachings of Madeleine Sophie Barat in their commitment to our school. Upon retirement, Tom wanted to leave something permanent to the school; he calls the altar, “a gift to express his gratitude and love for the community.” Tom recalled St. Joseph, the carpenter, as he selected the oak and walnut to match the beautiful woodwork in the chapel, and he formed in the top of the altar an inlay of the modern stylized Sacred Heart first created by Una Ryan, RSCJ, in 1988. This symbol of our charism emphasizes an open heart—open to receiving the power of Christ’s love, compassion and mercy, and a conduit of love to heal the suffering and injustices of our world. At the front of the altar, facing the congregation, is our that the Society of the US-Canada Province was entrusting on them. Cristina Wilwerding Hiddleston A93, current English teacher and formation to mission director, shares, “It was a momentous occasion that was hugely celebratory and at the same time, wistfully sad. It was inspiring to experience this milestone with so many RSCJ and to feel their trust in handing over this responsibility to the laypeople. The legacy of Saints Madeleine Sophie Barat and Rose Philippine Duchesne, as well as that of all the RSCJ who have faithfully served the Duchesne community in Omaha certainly sets us up for success. We have great inspiration and trust to guide us as we make this emotional transition.” Following the liturgy, the students celebrated with goûter in the cafeteria, while the Religious, lay people and guests were treated to a reception with birthday cake to celebrate our patroness’ birthday. Many well wishes came pouring in from the Religious who have either graduated or served here at Duchesne. Though they were not physically present on this day, they were united in prayer and Spirit with the school community. Elaine Abels, RSCJ, pointedly wrote a beautiful note of
traditional symbol of the Sacred Heart, painstakingly formed in clay. This symbol includes the sun, representing God’s justice, the crucified Sacred Heat of Christ, Mary’s pierced Immaculate Heart and a laurel wreath, which represents the glory of sacrifice. Tom Quest said that he hopes the altar will be used for many years and that, “Each time a Mass is said on this altar, may tremendous blessings go to each child of the Sacred Heart praying in this space.”
encouragement and love to the lay people. She emphasized that “it is all God’s work, and God’s Spirit is there to support, inspire, uphold, fill and gift each of you with what graces you need moment by moment as you move into the future carrying God’s love in your hearts and growing in the awareness and wonder of the height and depth of such an unconditional love. May the Spirit empower you to be a conduit of that love, continuously receiving and giving.” On August 30, the Religious made their way back to their respective homes while the lay people of Duchesne started their first day without the presence of the Religious for the first time in 135 years in Omaha. Sister Dawson expressed that the Society “acknowledges with great respect the educational heritage that the Religious began here and that dedicated, committed lay women and men have carried forward with grace and fruitfulness. Although after this week, the Religious will not be physically present here on a daily basis, our mission is alive in you and in the students of Duchesne today and in the years to come.” Just as Philippine took on the mission from Sophie to educate children in the United States, the lay people of Duchesne
will take the mission and responsibility to educate “for the sake of one child” here in Omaha. It Takes a Village "It takes a village to raise a child," an old proverb...but the advice is still relevant today. Duchesne depends upon parent volunteer groups in many ways. Read here to see which groups you can join to support our girls and school.
MEN FOR DUCHESNE
PARENT ASSOCIATION
Made up of men within the Duchesne Community, Men for Duchesne (M4D) has played an active role in raising funds for various DASH projects by organizing various events since its inception in 2010. M4D has raised money to support the cost of a new seven-passenger van to transport students, energy efficient light fixtures, a phone system that syncs with the security system and provides a keyless entry/swipe card access, a genie lift for and a utility pick-up truck. M4D-sponsored events have included, among others, the Pancake Breakfast, M4D March Madness Bracket Challenge, mother/ daughter movie nights, Creighton basketball and Husker football watch parties and the Lincoln Motor Company sponsored event"Driven to Give" for DASH. In the works for the 2016-2017 school year include a 5K walk/run, a meet and greet with fellow dads of DASH daughters,a self-defense class, Mass and Pancake Breakfast and a Lenten Pasta Feed.
The Duchesne Parent Association involves all parents in supporting our daughters with special events throughout each school year. Dues are collected from each student at registration. A board oversees these activities/events and selects committees to help manage them. Committee members also involve other parent volunteers to lend a hand. Some of those special events include: • Back-to-school picnic • Monthly "Fun Lunch" (lunch catered in from local restaurants) • Mother/Daughter mass and brunch • Father/Daughter mass and dinner • Teacher snacks • Teacher Appreciation luncheon • Used uniform sale • Adoration & prayer chains • Providing the hospitality "goodies" for various events year round • Baccalaureate mass & dinner • Graduation reception An important goal of the Duchesne Parent Association is to help build community among parents in a fun and welcoming environment. All are invited to attend our meetings the first Tuesday of each month at noon.

SCHOOL NEWS BOOSTER CLUB
CONGÉ
The Duchesne Booster Club is a parent-run, volunteer group that supports and enriches our athletic programs financially via four avenues: Booster Club Memberships, athletic program advertising, home concession sales and athletic apparel sales. A few examples of our financial contributions to our student athletes include a bus transportation subsidy, Hudl and Crossover Accounts for video breakdown and analytics, plus a trainer to coordinate organized conditioning sessions for the girls’ summer and off season use. In addition, the Booster Club will be subsidizing the cost to provide a full-time athletic trainer for our student-athletes this school year and also just purchased two new bats for the softball team. These things were possible because of the generous memberships, time commitments from parents at the concession stand, advertising sales for our game programs and the purchase of athletic merchandise. To meet the demands needed to make our teams competitive and well represented, we need your support! Please consider becoming a Booster Club member today and donating your time and talents to our student-athletes. Thank you for your commitment to Duchesne athletics.
Congé is a French word meaning “holiday” that is used in the majority of our Sacred Heart Network Schools. It has two important meanings at Duchesne. First and foremost, it is the surprise day planned by faculty and student council that occurs once each school year, and is not announced until the morning of the actual party. This fun day is always a big surprise to the students, it is truly one of the best traditions at Duchesne. The other Congé is the grand celebration that occurs each year on the last Saturday in January. The annual dinnerauction fundraiser, which began as a fancy black-tie art auction in 1976, has grown into a less formal event. Each year it is attended by over 500 alumnae, current parents, friends of Duchesne and even prospective families. Three or four current parent couples chair the event, and planning begins in early February, just after the previous event ends! The evening is comprised of a silent auction, oral/ live auction, student and adult raffle sales. There are patron events preceding the big event, and, of course, generous underwriters and corporate table sponsors who donate their funds and talents to make it a giant success. Proceeds from Congé not only directly support educational needs and the operating budget, but also provide tremendous community camaraderie.

For questions or more information on how to volunteer, contact Meghan Rowen, director of alumnae & special events at mrowen@duchesneacademy.org
As you can see, Duchesne does need volunteers. Whether it be through organizing a “fun lunch,” selling concessions at a home game, helping at a Men for Duchesne movie night or volunteering at Congé, parent participation plays a vital role in our school community. The volunteer relationship is reciprocal. Kara Knox Spitzenberger A88, one of this year’s Congé chairs notes, “I volunteer at Duchesne for selfish reasons. I want the school and community to continue to thrive as long as possible. I get way more out of volunteering for Duchesne than I give. There are many ways to to help and so many talented people you get to know when you volunteer.” FALL 2016

A Labor of
Love
In a small kitchen located on ground floor, the "lunch ladies" of Duchesne lovingly prepare homemade meals to fuel the minds and bodies of students, faculty and staff.
by Mary-Ellen Doyle
“Be humble, be simple and bring joy to others,” are words spoken by the Society of
the Sacred Heart’s foundress St. Madeleine Sophie Barat, but put into action every day in the old home economics room on the ground floor of Duchesne Academy. It is there that a team of dedicated women work each day to make sure that Duchesne’s students, faculty and staff don’t go hungry on their watch: the lunch ladies of Duchesne. In 1993, Duchesne parent Tricia Smith (Jami Smith Paulson A93 and Casey Smith A95) was approached by then Principal Bunny Flick, RSCJ, about starting a lunch program at Duchesne. Up until then, there had been no official lunch program; girls brought their own sack lunches or ate candy from the vending machines at lunch time. Because Tricia had had professional experience cooking in a restaurant, she knew that if she could navigate the process of opening her own catering company and manage to serve 25 girls per day at Duchesne, she would be able to leave her other job. By taking that leap of faith, the lunch program at Duchesne was born. In just a few months’ time, Tricia’s estimate of 25 had grown, and she was serving over 80 lunches each day. With the larger numbers, Tricia knew she would have to add to her team, and Nancy Dwyer Davis C66 (mother of Erin Dwyer Clemens A85, Stacy Dwyer Cihunka A86, Kelly Dwyer Schutte A88, Molly Dwyer Rosenbohm A89 and Nancy Dwyer Skudlarek A97) and Noreen Frenking (mother to Annie Frenking Hergenrader A81, Colleen Frenking Jacoby A92 and Molly A92 and grandmother to Meghan Hergenrader A11) joined her in the kitchen. Ownership of the lunch program company has changed through the years, but today has returned full-circle, back to Nancy, the only member of the team to have been here contiguously since the lunch program’s beginnings 24 years ago. She says, “I think that the real misconception about us is that the lunch program at Duchesne is owned by Duchesne. That is not the case. We purchase all our own food, do all our own cooking and buy our own equipment, including ovens and refrigerators. We are our own private little company down here, not in it for profit but to provide decent, healthful, homemade lunches.” The company’s success has lead to expansion offers from other Catholic high schools in the area for the company, which they have always turned down. “We love Duchesne, and this is where our heart is,” declares Tricia. 16

Sarah Buda Stratman A95 (mother to Ann A15 and Emily A19) who joined the kitchen team this year, recalls the early days of the lunch program that she enjoyed when she was an Academy student. “Chili in a bread bowl was the big hit. When that was served, it was a happy day.” Over the years, students’ favorites have changed; the ladies note that while chili “couldn’t be given away today,” the current favorite menu item is chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, corn and gravy, which, when combined is lovingly known as a “comfort bowl.” The ladies in the kitchen have expanded their services through the years to include the opening of the snack bar in the late 90s. Tricia remembers that the vending machine room was sometimes locked to students and was often unreliable, preventing the students from acquiring any snacks during the day. To alleviate this issue, “We don’t want anyone to starve,” Nancy says, the ladies suggested selling cans of soda and chips to the girls. That side-operation has grown into one that bakes more than 300 cookies per week, as well as sells muffins, bagels, microwave mac-and-cheese, veggie bags with dip, Keurig coffee pods to use with the machine, and this year’s big seller, chips and guacamole dip. Duchesne staff member Tracy Bridges (mother to Taylor A09 and Molly A14) laughs about Duchesne’s snack bar, “I used to think that Duchesne’s bookstore was the happiest place on earth, but I changed my mind last week when I saw the faces of the girls in the snack bar as they frosted their own warm cinnamon rolls. Pure bliss.” Senior Annie Boggust A17 agrees, “I start many days getting coffee from the snack bar, and when I forget my lunch, there is always something there for me. Plus, those muffins are amazing!” When thinking of her humble and simple beginnings on ground floor, cooking without air conditioning on hot days or heat in the winter, Tricia explains, “I was just down here doing something that I thought was important. It has gotten bigger than I ever dreamed.” Nancy adds, “We are all moms who just love Duchesne and have strong ties to the school. What we do is a real labor of love.”

wo new traditions were begun at the beginning of this school year, serving to book-end a girl’s experience at Duchesne over her four years at the Academy. Incoming freshmen and their parents were invited to attend the Freshman MugShot Event on their first day of school, which is their Freshman Orientation. This event was sponsored by the Congé chairs to welcome freshman parents and girls on the first day of school and to give them a Congé-logo clad coffee mug and a special photo “mugshot” with their daughters. This first year, the parents had a fabulous time and the students were able to enter Duchesne with their entire class community. All were welcome, and all had a ball! seniors, as well as entering college sophomores, were invited back in August for Senior Send-off…a nice way to prepare for their new adventures in college and say goodbye to friends from their class and the class above them at Duchesne. Donuts and coffee were served (goûter at its best!), and connections were made between several students who now attend the same college/university. A memorable summer morning in the Stuart Art Gallery is just what our young alumnae needed to start their year! Look for both of these events to be repeated in the coming years as Duchesne bids the girls a hearty welcome and a joyful farewell!

"Back in the Day" By: meghan conway rowen A97
S
aturday, September 10, was a memorable morning for three members of the Academy class of 1949, as well as over 75 guests in attendance. The day began at 9:00 a.m. in the Quinn Center of Performing Arts with coffee and fresh cinnamon buns handmade by Duchesne mother, Mary Danielson. Several Duchesne College and Academy alumnae, as well as current and former parents of Duchesne girls, smiled with the entrance of alumna, Barbara Miskell Fitzgerald A56/C60 who donned her Duchesne Academy jumper (yes, the same one!), clad with her silver Sacred Heart pins, bobby socks, saddle shoes. Barb topped the ensemble by covering her shoulders with her husband Bill’s Creighton Prep letter sweater! The morning was full of positive energy and much Sacred Heart love. The presenters were “The ‘49ers,” Madeleine Ortman Begley, Marilyn Curran Ryan and Nancy Ortman Ryan (Madeline and Nancy are first cousins), who came back to their alma mater to tell stories of their Duchesne Days, the era of the late 1940s. Duchesne Academy Head of School Meg Huerter Brudney acted as the “Reverend Mother” sitting in an antique chair from the early 1900s and led the three in a humorous, but also serious, “Sacred Heart” discussion about the way of life in 1949. Topics brought up by the women included the RSCJ presence and influence on their lives, the daily regimen of a Duchesne girl,
the classroom rules and curriculum and, of course, memories of their Congé! One of the wittiest answers came from Madeleine Begley when asked by Meg Brudney, “Did any of you ever think of entering the Society of the Sacred Heart?” Madeleine replied, “Well, yes, many times…after I was married!” The attentive audience asked many questions of the women and in turn, told their personal stories which added to the significance of the discussion. Alumna Margo O’Connor Bieker A71 and her husband Bob were generous to film and record the morning. “One of the many goals we have is to preserve the rich history that Duchesne possesses with events like this and through our archives. Our archives tell a story, and our students need to learn Duchesne Academy & College history to appreciate the progress of women over the years and see the depth and beauty of a Sacred Heart education, says Meg Brudney. ”We are beyond blessed to have alumna Margo O’Connor Bieker A71 as our volunteer archivist to help us with this process.” If you or your loved ones have any Duchesne memorabilia, medals or photographs that you plan to part with in the coming months, please contact Director of Alumnae and Special Events Meghan Conway Rowen. We would be delighted to find a safe place for your Duchesne treasures in our archives.

hat a fun way to spend a morning in the Chapel at Duchesne! On Friday, September 30, alumnae and friends of Duchesne, along with the preschool children, celebrated the Feast of the Guardian Angel and blessed over 25 babies in an adorable ceremony led by Fr. Dave Korth of Sacred Heart Parish. He began the celebration by playing his flute, which promptly calmed the children down – making for a great start to the service! Our preschool children, led by Preschool Head of School Sara Wachter, sang their favorite song, “At Duchesne We Have Five Goals,” followed by their special prayer and the “Blessing Song.” The ceremony ended with Fr. Korth blessing the children of the Sacred Heart with a reading from Matthew, followed by a beautiful guitar version of “Coeur de Jesus” by Assistant Principal Eric Krakowski. Following the ceremony, a well-attended playdate and, as to be expected, goûter took place in the kid-friendly decorated dance room, with Duchesne sippy cups, cheerios, apple juice boxes and much-needed coffee for the mommies and grandmas. New mother to three week-old daughter Maeven, Meghan Doyle McCamy A00 attended the event and said, “I was so grateful for the opportunity to have my new baby blessed in the chapel that means so much to me.”

Members of the ACADEMY CLASS 1966 enjoyed a memorable reunion weekend! From Judy Enenbach Quest – “Always being a class that did it ‘our way,’ the Academy class of 1966 gathered for our 50 year reunion on the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, organized by Andrea Sobczak Burke (see photo on page 27). Attended by 14 class members, it was definitely a time to be cherished and remembered. Our class has always been very close and the most wonderful part of the three days was the opportunity to really talk with each and every person. We truly care about one another. A highlight of the time was the discussion of the book The Secret of Magic, written by our own Debbie Johnson which we had all read. A visit to an aquarium, a high English tea and the many historical highlights on the ship made the time very interesting but probably the most fun was tucking Andrea into the bed slept in by Winston Churchill! Life is always a joy when spent with our classmates of 1966.” ANNIE FRENKING HERGENRADER A81 and her husband, Steve, recently moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Currently, Annie is substitute teaching and getting to know the city well! JULIE HIGGINS SGROI A81 was recently promoted as the director of athletics at Duchesne. Her daughter Elizabeth is a member of the class of 2018. Go Cardinals! MICHAELA BETTERMAN D’ARRIGO A85 (left) was presented with the Helen Bruns Ryan Service Award for her outstanding commitment to the mission of the Josephinum Academy in Chicago. Dear friend and former Head of School at Duchesne Sr. Shirley Miller (right), was able to be in Chicago to present the award to Michalea. Helen Bruns Ryan, for whom the award is named, was a long-time member of the board of trustees at the Josephinum and supporter of the school, a visionary who believes in the mission of the Jo in the city of Chicago – similar to Michaela. Michaela served on the board of trustees at the Jo for six years, four years as the chair of the development committee, and was responsible for leading the effort to increase scholarship funding for Jo young women to over $2 million which made it possible to increase enrollment by over 60 students. Congrats, Michaela! KATIE DOCKERY BURNS A94 (second from right) lives in Mineral Pointe, Wisconsin with her husband Joe and three children. Katie is a musician who sings and plays guitar – and recently released her third album called Weighted Balloon on May 14, 2016, in Omaha at the Arts Collective in Benson. Her classmates Trisha Kult (left), Elena Taylor Garcia (second from left) and Carly Thompson (right) were able to see Katie play in Benson last May. While teaching, Maureen completed a grant to receive laptops, computers and printers to start a resource center in the school. One of the most memorable and incredible accomplishments in Armenia was that she started a girls leadership camp nationwide throughout the entire country called GLOW (Girls Leading Our World), empowering girls to be leaders in their respective communities. Their project was to go back to their towns and implement what they learned during the camp. Maureen experienced an immense amount of positive self-growth and learned a lot about life during her time in the Peace Corps, she said, “Armenia will always have a place in my heart.” JILLIAN WEES A09 attended undergrad at the College of St. Benedict/St. John's University in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Lauren also participated in a 400 mile pilgrimage walk across parts of Spain this summer honoring the jubilee year celebration of the Camino Ignaciano. Different than the Camino de Santiago which attracts thousands of pilgrims every year, this camino, also in Spain, follows in the footsteps of St. Ignatius in his journey from his hometown of Loyola to Manresa, the place where he wrote the Spiritual Exercises. CLAIRE SAPONE A12 graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a degree in journalism and media communications with an emphasis in creative media. She is working at Mula in the Blackstone District and was also hired at Duchesne as our social media specialist. We love having her back in the halls of the Academy! Creighton is one of the nation’s premier producers of Goldwater Scholars, with 19 students receiving the prestigious award. Samantha is currently a junior at Creighton University with a major in biochemistry. Her plan is to earn a Ph.D. in translational science with the goal of teaching at the university level and researching more effective approaches to today’s most pernicious diseases. On www.creighton.edu, Samantha is quoted as saying, “What I found most exciting upon first coming to Creighton, and what continues to inspire me about this school everyday is the realization I have come to that some of the biggest role models in my life now are my peers. REUNION WEEKEND
Trés Bien Award Ann Marie Foley Abboud graduated from the Middle School at Duchesne in 1972 and the Academy in 1976. Ann Marie is an outstanding example of someone who actively lives and models the life that a Sacred Heart education embodies; the ideals, goals and criteria are demonstrated daily by Ann Marie. Goal 1 is a personal and active faith in God, and Ann Marie’s strong faith in the Lord is demonstrated through her kindness. She is resolute in her regular efforts of spreading the “good word” about a Sacred Heart education. When it comes to an event, let her go! She rarely says no, and completes every task beyond 100%, making sure every step of the process is perfect. She takes her responsibilities seriously and through those responsibilities, especially her volunteer activities, exhibits the characteristics of a true Sacred Heart woman. Duchesne was honored to have Ann Marie as a Congé cochair in 2012. Meghan Rowen states, “I learned a lot from Ann Marie that year, about our event and about Duchesne. It is no surprise that the theme of her Congé was ‘There’s No Place Like Home.’ This is Ann Marie’s second home!”
Award presenter Sara Strattan A75 and Ann Marie Foley Abboud A76. (Photo credit: Claire Sapone)
Then and now, she continues put Duchesne’s best interest first, and made sure that year, Congé was full of the rich history and tradition that Duchesne is known for in Omaha. She brings a wealth of knowledge and creativity to every project she touches. Principal Laura Hickman says, “Ann Marie has offered her services to the school to create the decorations for many Liturgies, dinners and receptions, and like anyone who does something well, she was rewarded by being asked often.” The Duchesne Alumnae Board was thrilled to honor Ann Marie–très bien!
M erci Beaucoup Award Twelve years ago, Duchesne was blessed to bring Tom Quest on staff as director of building and grounds. Tom is equal parts artistic and practical, an even, methodical problemsolver. Luckily our 135-year-old building offered the perfect canvas for Tom’s solutions and creations. There is not a room or a hall or a system that has not been improved in the last 12 years though Tom’s efforts, and, of course, we have even added rooms (entire wings, in fact) that Tom has helped to design and oversee their construction. But Tom’s gifts to this community go far beyond the physical spaces. Tom saw Duchesne with the eye of an artist and a steward of God’s gifts. Under his guidance, this drafty and leaky building has been slowly transformed into an energy star rated business that is 95% more efficient than other buildings of this era. Tom has been a constant voice of conservation and efficiency, and he has carried his message to students and colleagues by encouraging recycling and reduction of waste.

most beautiful and lasting gift of all to the school upon his retirement; the altar, where this community comes together through, with and in Christ to celebrate the Eucharist. The single most sacred space in this building has been lovingly handcrafted as a gift to the school. And so with deep gratitude for the legacy he leaves, merci beaucoup, Tom Quest.
Tom has shared his art with this community. He has made beautiful pottery that he donates to Congé, and he has been a guest artist in our classrooms. And he has made the

new DATE
The date for Duchesne’s College & Academy reunion weekend will change for 2017. St. Rose Philippine Duchesne landed in New Orleans on May 29, 1818, making 2018 the bicentennial of her arrival in America. To commemorate this event, Duchesne Academy will begin a year-long celebration during the 2017-2018 school year and we want our alumnae to take part in the celebration. We will host one day of festivities on our beautiful campus, Saturday, September 9, 2017. Please join us and help spread the word to your friends that the date has changed for 2017. Stay tuned for more details. We look forward to seeing you next September! FALL 2016

FROM THE 2016-2017 BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR Dear Duchesne Community, We have many exciting programs, projects and initiatives occurring at our school. The Board of Trustees and school will be welcoming the visiting team known as SHCOG (Sacred Heart Commission on Goals) to meet with us in November and review the results of a self-study that reflects our feedback from various constituencies regarding how we live out the five Sacred Heart Goals and their Criteria. With the recent departure of the beloved RSCJ at Duchesne, the timing of SHCOG could not be better. From now on, we laypeople have to be mindful of the trust that has been in placed in us to live out the Goals and Criteria without the daily presence of the RSCJs, and SHCOG helps us reflect on that aim. Goals and planning work hand in hand. Your trustees are organizing a process that will result in a revised strategic plan being developed during the first half of 2017, giving us opportunity to dream about what comes next for our wonderful school. The plan will invite input from many constituencies. If you would like to share input, then please, let us know. The results of the process and final strategic plan will be shared. As trustees, a delicate balance we face is enhancing the learning environment while preserving the character of our historic building. The Board of Trustees recently approved a plan, in the works for more than two years, that will replace aging infrastructure, specifically the very old and obsolete steam boilers. We will also be replacing old windows, and air conditioning added to the classrooms and chapel. This project will occur in two phases in the summers of 2017 and 2018. Adding to the learning environment is a new STEAM curriculum (science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics). Dr. Laura Hickman, principal, is leading the development, with input from students and teachers, which will be housed in the space that used to be the stacks in the library. This remodel will provide collaborative study areas, computers and other technology to support this exciting initiative. The upgrades to our infrastructure, preservation of our historic school and new academic programs like the STEAM space cannot occur without your support. Many volunteers are generous with sharing their time and talent, and others are very generous with providing financial support. We need your generosity to continue to complete these projects as well as others that we will be dreaming about during our upcoming strategic planning process. Please share as generously as you are able. And, thank you, for all you have done thus far.
Gratefully,
Todd Foje Chair, Board of Trustees

ithout a doubt, much has changed since October of 1881 when Mother Margaret Dunne founded the Convent of the Sacred Heart and opened a school with an enrollment of just three students. In an effort to remain relevant with the everchanging times, the enrollment, curriculum and the grade levels of education fluctuated as the Religious of the Sacred Heart operated and staffed Duchesne Academy, College and an elementary school. The college closed in 1968, and the elementary school was phased out in the mid-1970’s, having educated thousands of students from preschool through college. Duchesne stands today with a thriving enrollment of 330 young women in the Academy and 62 boys and girls in the Preschool. As enrollment has experienced fluctuations throughout the years, so too have the financial needs of the school and accompanying responsibilities of those charged with securing the fiscal position of Duchesne Academy and Preschool. An organization with as rich and deep a history as Duchesne must endure important changes throughout the years in order to remain relevant. The following article provides an opportunity to dispel a handful of myths that have resulted from changing perspectives throughout the years.
Myth #1: there is a “prototype” of student best suited to attend Duchesne Academy Besides donning the required white collared shirt and famous Fairmont plaid skirt, each of the 330 students at Duchesne Academy is unique and possesses varying interests. Some are interested in the STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) program with a specific focus on math and science. Some look forward to taking the stage and participating in Duchesne’s strong performing arts program. Yet others relate best to competing on the basketball court or the soccer field. The interests of each student and the opportunities provided to her are endless. We are proud of the unique perspective and life experience that each individual student at Duchesne brings with her and, as adults in the community, take very seriously our role in identifying and cultivating the unique gifts bestowed upon all of them. Diversity at Duchesne exists in countless ways and, as a
school community, we not only acknowledge, but celebrate the many forms of diversity that exist within our community. Our current student body in the Academy represents 40 zip codes and our 9th grade class comes from 32 grade schools including Catholic, public, and home schools. Of our student body, 46% receives some form of financial aid and 14% represent a minority ethnicity or race. Our students represent nine different faith backgrounds. Over 60% of students participated in athletics during the 2015-2016 school year. The instrumental music program has 29 students who perform, and 64 students joined in the drama program and were involved in either the fall or spring production. These numbers and percentages are indeed wonderful examples of the diverse backgrounds and interests of our current student body.

GIVING Myth #3: My giving capacity is too small to make a positive impact
The annual cost of educating each Duchesne student is not covered by tuition alone, we rely on the generosity of our donors to help make up the difference.
Myth #2: Tuition covers the actual cost to educate each student
For the families of both prospective and current students, the cost of tuition is undoubtedly a huge factor of consideration when choosing a high school. As other college-preparatory high schools in Omaha have experienced, Duchesne’s tuition has crept above the $10,000 mark. The cost of tuition for the current school year is $11,400 with an additional $1,000 per student in fees. Considering these figures, a surprising fact for many is the reality that the actual cost to educate each student is $17,880 for the current school year. Contributing to this cost are a few notable trademarks of a Sacred Heart education, including maintaining a low student/teacher ratio and a personal approach to one’s educational experience. The student/teacher ratio remains 9:1, and the average classroom size includes less than 15 students with the smallest class offering at Duchesne including just five students. Although we recognize these trademarks as non-negotiable, in an ideal learning environment like the one offered at Duchesne, they come at a large price. The difference between the actual cost and the cost of tuition leaves a “gap” of $5,480 per student that must be made up through fundraising efforts. Tuition supports 70% of the annual budget, and development efforts cover the remaining 30%. To avoid having a “gap,” some schools in the country place tuition at an amount that covers the actual cost to educate each student. However, as an educational institution whose Board of Trustees place affordable tuition among its top priorities, we have made a deliberate decision to continue making up the difference through development efforts. Many of our families already make significant sacrifices in order to afford a Sacred Heart education for their daughters. Additionally, as stated above, an increasing percentage of students apply, qualify and/or receive need-based aid. We recognize that by adopting a tuition that reflects the full amount to educate each student, a Duchesne education would not be possible for many. 60
DUCHESNE ACADEMY
We hear this so often that we say, “If we had a nickel for every time a supporter worried that his or her gift was too small to make an impact, we would no longer need to fundraise!” Simply put, no gift is too small to make a collective impact at Duchesne Academy. In fact, we strive to provide meaningful giving opportunities that meet the varying interests and capacities of our benefactors. Additionally, we have seen the size and frequency of gifts vary throughout the life cycle as an individual or family’s financial obligations change over time. We understand philanthropy, specifically when it comes to deciding which organizations to support and at what level, to be a very personal endeavor that looks quite different from one person to the next. Duchesne’s fund development program focuses on three main areas: 1) annual drives and Congé, our special event, which directly support the operating costs to deliver a college preparatory, Sacred Heart education, 2) capital efforts which support the cost of new construction along with improvements to our current building and grounds and 3) legacy or gift planning which often utilize more sophisticated estate and tax planning techniques in order to make a larger gift than could be made from income alone. All of these focus areas are critical for maintaining the educational experience for Duchesne students in 2016 and for sustaining Sacred Heart education in Omaha well into the future. Without a doubt, your gift, no matter the size, is a meaningful contribution to our mission at 3601 Burt Street.

established a partnership with The Verdis Group in an effort to create a plan to continue into the future as a school that visibly prioritizes the conservation of our world’s natural resources. We are proud of the accomplishments that we have achieved already and look forward to our work ahead. Maintaining energy efficiency in a building as old as Duchesne does not come without a great deal of commitment, expenses and TLC.
Myth #5: The Sacred Heart mission of yesterday is different than it is today
The mission of Saint Madeleine Sophie Barat continues to remain relevant through the dedicated support of faculty, staff and the greater Sacred Heart Network.
Myth #4: Preservation and the upkeep of Duchesne’s historic building and grounds is inexpensive and low maintenance
As anyone who has ever lived in an old home understands first-hand, maintaining a building that, in some parts, is 135 years old is, well, just plain expensive. We take great pride in the fact that our building, with its rich history and beautiful character, is indicated as a historical marker by the Nebraska State Historical Society. Even our student body comprised of teen-age girls claims jurisdiction over any additions or improvements that they feel may risk the “old look and feel” of their beloved home away from home. Old buildings maintenance often involves the replacement of windows and roofs, tuckpointing, leaking ceilings, cracks in the walls, old pipes and heating and cooling systems that require replacement. But as with anything worth preserving and maintaining long into the future, it comes with a steep cost. We spend on average $700,000 per year on general building maintenance. In relationship with Pope Francis' encyclical on the environment, the notion of sustainability and maintaining environmentally friendly buildings has become a specific emphasis within the Duchesne community over the past year. Important building updates in the spring of this year helped earn Duchesne an Energy Star rating, a national certification issued by the government and serves as an indication of our building’s energy efficiency rating when compared to other buildings of the same age and vintage. Additionally, Duchesne recently
As of August of this year, we no longer have an RSCJ presence at Duchesne on a daily basis. This much is true. Although we wish our reality was different, the writing was on the wall for some time. This allowed a great deal of prayer and careful planning to ensure that the lay people possess the necessary commitment and expertise to continue the Sacred Heart mission set forth by our founding mothers. To say the least, it is an awesome responsibility. With the looming retirement and resulting departure of our two most recent religious, Sisters Lucy Hayes and JoEllen Sumpter, lay faculty and staff have assumed fundamental positions around mission formation and spirituality, all of which are in place to ensure accountability to the Sacred Heart mission including the Five Goals. The visibility of the Sacred Heart Goals at Duchesne is greater today than perhaps it has ever been. There is an almost tangible presence of the Goals that permeates the culture within the Duchesne community. This is a direct result of the careful planning that went into ensuring the readiness of the lay people along with a reflection of how serious both the adults and students in the community are about taking on this incredible responsibility. Although we forge ahead without the daily presence of the RSCJ, we are blessed to have three Religious of the Sacred Heart serving on our Board of Trustees: Shirley Miller, Georgeann Parizek and Lynn Osiek. Their leadership on the board combined with their ongoing involvement in the school’s events and activities play an important role in the preservation of the Sacred Heart mission at Duchesne. Two additional sources of support to whom Duchesne’s mission remains accountable are the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals (SHCOG) and the Sacred Heart Network. Both have an ongoing presence at the school that help preserve the centuriesold mission set forth by Saint Madeleine Sophie, while also ensuring its relevance in the 21st century.
Duchesne is a phenomenal school that is thriving over 135 years since its doors first opened. Because we so strongly believe that we are educating students to be the best for the world, we are confident in the profound impact that Duchesne has had on countless people. But we clearly rely on your continued support to ensure a sound financial and educational future. Please consider the impact that your generosity can make on the young women and children at Duchesne and consider a gift today. Online gifts can be made by visiting donate.duchesneacademy.org. Thank you for being an important part of both Duchesne’s history and future as you support our special school. FALL 2016

Estate Gifts Turn
Dreams
into Realities by Katie Risch Bakhit A94
A $1.5 million lifetime gift will help Duchesne finally air-condition the heart of the school, our chapel.
$1.5 Million “Lifetime” Gift Estate gifts are most often received by an organization after the death of a benefactor, but a trend is emerging of donors making lifetime/legacy/advance-bequest gifts. We are gratified that, as an alternative to naming a charity like Duchesne for a gift in their estate plans, some donors consider making a “lifetime gift” or an “advance bequest” (all-at-once or over a period of years) during their lifetime. Such gifts are transformational for any organization, and especially for a school like Duchesne. They help now—to meet current needs, with the added benefit of donors being able to see and witness the great benefits and profound impact such gifts have. Duchesne received such a commitment earlier this year. The donor understands the struggle that all-girl schools have in securing large gifts and meeting the fundraising needs of transformational projects. She contacted us, and we discussed Duchesne’s priorities and current needs. The list is long, but most pressing in the near term is replacement of our two remaining 40-year-old steam boilers and air conditioning the remaining 60% of the building not yet air-conditioned. As part of this project, the chapel will be air-conditioned, which has been a long term goal. The added benefit of the new HVAC system is that it will be much more energy efficient and better for the environment, while substantially reducing monthly 62

operating costs. In an incredibly generous response, the donor responded with a commitment of a transformational, lead-gift toward anchoring the project as an advance estate gift. It is the single largest donation in Duchesne’s history, and we are exceedingly grateful. In the words of the donor, “Duchesne serves a key role in the development of young women at a time when women are in the work force in all occupations, as doctors, scientists, engineers, lawyers, artists, teachers, nurses and business leaders. Even more importantly, they serve as wives, mothers and as the nucleus of the family, providing love and instilling core values of faith.” In discussing her decision, she said, “Duchesne is an important school with an important role in Omaha, with a high school, a preschool, and serving as an anchor in a historic neighborhood. We know tuition does not cover all the costs. Our family has been blessed. We have a desire and a responsibility to discern how to help carry out God’s work. Financial and philanthropic support for Duchesne is important for Duchesne’s continued success.” She added, “It is our deep hope and desire that our gift might inspire and motivate others to consider gifts to Duchesne, during their lifetimes or in their estate plans, so that Duchesne can be here for generations of students to come.” Major gifts, both those that are donated during life and as an estate gift, are critical and pivotal for Duchesne to carry
out our mission long into the future. Such gifts are needed and help us meet needs today and help meet future needs and goals long term. We are immensely humbled and grateful for this transformational gift.
$1 Million Bequest from the estate of Donald Keough to support need-based aid On February 24, 2015, Donald Keough, a long-time supporter of Duchesne and beloved husband of Marilyn “Mickie” Mulhall Keough C48 passed away. Through the generosity of a million-dollar gift from Donald’s estate, his legacy will continue into perpetuity. The gift was invested in the endowment and annual earnings will be used to support need-based financial aid. Generous to the ever-changing needs of the school throughout the years, the Keoughs held a tender place in their hearts for those who need it most. Mickie received aid when she was a college student at Duchesne and wanted to repay that. As stated by Meg Brudney, who opened the envelope with the gift on her second day as Head of School, “The generosity demonstrated by Donald and Mickie Keough through this legacy gift is amazing. It is especially meaningful to learn the value that a Sacred Heart education had on Mickie’s life well after she was a student and the way that she and her husband desired to ‘pay it forward’.” It is legacy gifts like the one from Donald Keough’s estate that make tuition assistance possible for students who need it most.
$815,000 Bequest from the estate of John (Anne Hanighen) Daly to name Parlor Dining Room Upon the death of John Daly in June, 2014, and the settlement of his estate following, Duchesne received an estate gift in the amount of $815,000. John was preceded in death by his wife Anne Hanighen Daly, a proud graduate of both Duchesne Academy A39 and Duchesne College, C43. A couple who never had any children of their own, the gift of a Catholic education remained one of their lives’ greatest blessings. While they experienced great financial success, John and Anne maintained a very modest and humble life style. Anne’s younger sister, Mary Lou Hanighen A54/C58 recalls, “Anne was committed to her volunteer work in the community. Besides that, she loved people and she loved to entertain and make them feel comfortable.” Both John and Anne were committed to their Catholic faith. John’s cousin Joe Daly recalls that John attended daily mass until the very end of his life. After he no longer drove, he

sold his home and moved to New Cassel Retirement Center, where attendance at daily mass remained a priority. Duchesne is among a number of Catholic organizations who benefitted from the generosity of John and Anne Daly. Because of Anne’s love for people and entertaining, the Parlor Dining Room at Duchesne has been named in honor of this generous estate gift. The Saint Philippine Duchesne Heritage Society
consists of individuals and couples like the ones listed above who have made provisions for Duchesne in their estate planning. Planned gifts may include appreciated stock, real estate, life insurance and other forms of will designations. By working with a financial planner, attorney or tax advisor, you may discover that in addition to ensuring the vitality of the school, many charitable gifting strategies offer valuable financial benefits and tax advantages. The future of Duchesne depends on these types of gifts. For more information on how you can become a member of the Heritage Society, or to let us know that you have remembered Duchesne in your estate plans, please see attached information.
