Board Chair Letter
Dear Friends,
As I reflect on 2025, it’s been a very busy year full of changes. With the retirement and departure of Sr. Laura Anne Caire and Sr. Sharon Karam, this will be the first time since the school’s founding that we will not have Religious of the Sacred Heart living on campus. We thank both sisters for helping develop Duchesne Academy into what it is today and for their contributions to the broader Sacred Heart Network of Schools.
I can assure you that the Board understands its role to ensure that Duchesne Academy maintains its Catholic, Independent, Sacred Heart identity and to ensure that the mission via the Goals and Criteria lives on.
We also have a responsibility to work closely with the Head of School and the leadership team to ensure the sustainability of this outstanding institution. That means making sure that annual plans and budgets address the short-term needs, while ensuring that there are plans in place for the long term.
This past year, we spent significant time working with the leadership team on long term planning in the form of a Campus Master Plan and a Strategic Plan. While both are works in progress, you will see near-term evidence of these plans emerging in the renovation of the White House and repurposing of the administrative wing. The administrative team will move into the White House, freeing up space for new classrooms, a lab for robotics, faculty workspace, and an Upper School commons. As enrollment has grown, space and program needs
will be at the forefront of the Board’s focus.
With the new school year, we welcome four new trustees: Ashley Sneed Dillard, Natalie Mohtashami, David Ley, and Margie Strom, RSCJ. Each brings diverse experience that will complement the Board in meeting its responsibilities. We are also sad to say goodbye to Sr. Toner, who has served the school, first as the Head of School and later as a long-standing trustee. We thank her for her wisdom, dedication, and, most of all, her thoughtful advice.
On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank the many people who have made this year so productive and successful. First, Hillary and her leadership team who are 200% committed to the school and its success. We are fortunate to have a Head of School, who has been educated in the Sacred Heart system, understands its importance, and is committed to the mission of Sacred Heart education.
Finally, we thank the many parents, parents of former students and alumnae for the continued support. We are grateful for your gifts of time, service, and the financial assistance you generously provide. You are the community that makes Duchesne special.
Sincerely,
Larry Ziemba Chair, Board of Trustees
du Coeur
(from the Heart)
What a wonderful year we had—full of celebrations for Sr. Caire and Sr. Karam, student successes academic, athletic, and artistic, and the deep strengthening of a community whose mission is clear: to make known the love of Christ in the world through education!
As you know, St. Madeleine Sophie Barat approached her work through the lens of relationships. At Duchesne Academy of the Sacred Heart, we honor her legacy as we cultivate deep connections among parents, colleagues, students, and teachers. We know that by building community together though relationships characterized by mutual respect, we come closer to God.
An environment that fosters relationships and the aspirations of the Goals and Criteria requires support both tangible and intangible, physical and metaphysical. This Report of Appreciation serves as a testament to all of those who contributed in whatever way they could to that goal, through a small donation, through the gift of time as a volunteer,
or through a large-scale gift. With your help, we provided over $2 million in tuition assistance, created more spaces to best serve our students, and provided an unparalleled Sacred Heart education to over 760 girls from our Petite Hearts to our poised graduates.
You have been cheerful givers, as Paul asks us to be in 2 Corinthians:
Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. (9:7-8)
And it is truly your generosity that allows Sophie’s transformational vision to live on here in Houston. We are grateful for the philanthropic spirit of a community that recognizes the larger purpose of a Sacred Heart education and for your passionate support as we carry it forward from 1800 into the future.
Hillary Feerick-Hillenbrand Head of School
A Legacy of Love and Service
This year, we honored a significant transition both for us as a school and for the Society of the Sacred Heart. We bid farewell to the two religious who were in permanent residence on our campus.
As one of the first founding mothers who set foot on the property in 1960, Laura Ann Caire, RSCJ, helped create the ethos of joy characteristic of the Duchesne community. She served as teacher, head of school and Middle School division head until 2009 before joining our Advancement Team. In October, Sr. Caire began her retirement in the Society’s Oakwood community in Atherton, California.
Sharon Karam, RSCJ, was an English teacher for

more than twenty years at Duchesne, instilling in her students and colleagues alike a passion to serve others. She served on the board at Angela House and is currently a trustee of the Regis School. In February, Sr. Karam moved to a new religious community in New Orleans, Louisiana. Thankfully, she visits us regularly.
Our community kicked off the 2024-2025 school year with a series of farewell events and heartfelt tributes to Sr. Caire. And in January, we prepared for Sr. Karam’s departure with a Missioning and Blessing service. Joined by many RSCJ, including Provincial, Sr. Suzanne Cooke,
Ruby Powell with Sr. Caire
the administration, faculty, staff, trustees, and students formally accepted the Society’s commission to carry on the mission envisioned first by St. Madeleine Sophie and St. Rose Philippine Duchesne and sustained today by the Network of Sacred Heart Schools.
May the photos on these pages serve as a reminder of the extraordinary influence of Sisters Caire and Karam. We are grateful for the decades-long blessing of their presence as well as the presence of many other Religious of the Sacred Heart who have graced our campus over the years.
Thank you to those donors who contributed to the endowed funds for Sr. Caire and Sr. Karam and to those who underwrote the many events to honor their legacies.

“In college, focus on two groups: one that shares your values and supports you, and one that needs your care.
These are essential human connections that make us human.”

2021-2025 Matriculations
We share this list in celebration of our 2021-2025 graduates and the continuation of their academic journeys. At Duchesne, fit, which is multi-dimensional and individually assessed, is the ultimate outcome of the college application process. Our goal is that all students look back on their college search with pride and move forward with confidence. Wherever they ultimately go, we know that they will continue to cultivate and carry with them the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria they have made their own. Schools in bold signify Class of 2025 matriculations.

With Grateful
Hearts,
We Thank Our Generous Donors...
Duchesne’s Board of Trustees, past and present parents and grandparents, alumnae, and past and present faculty and staff, demonstrate their commitment to Duchesne and the Sacred Heart Goals and Criteria through their financial support each year.
The donors listed below made generous gifts in support of The Duchesne Fund, Extravaganza, Sporting Clays Tournament, and other special funds between July 1, 2024 and June 30, 2025.
The Sophie Society
The Sophie Society is comprised of Duchesne’s benefactors who honor the proud legacy of Duchesne Academy and the timeless vision of St. Madeleine Sophie Barat through their generosity. Members of the Sophie Society are leadership donors who contribute $2,500 or more to The Duchesne Fund or $5,000 or more in a given fiscal year, when combined with gifts toward the school’s other fundraising activities.
A Tradition of Names in ALL CAPS
Duchesne is proud to recognize our alumnae in all forms of print by including their maiden name in an all caps front whenever they are referenced. It is our hope that members of our school community will be able to instantly distinguish our alumnae in Duchesne’s printed materials. This is certainly one of the school’s longest lasting traditions.

Heart of Generosity
The
Since 1979, generous individuals and foundations have made extraordinary, endowed gifts to Duchesne to ensure that many more young women have access to a Sacred Heart education and to support the professional development of Duchesne’s faculty. Duchesne is what it is today thanks to the generosity and commitment of those who have given so much to our school community in years past. We stand on their shoulders as we look to the future, knowing that their legacy lives on in everything we do.
The following funds have been endowed through their generosity. To learn more about contributing to Duchesne’s endowment or about naming an endowed fund, please contact Darlene Henson, Head of Advancement.
The 2024-2025 donors to these endowed funds are listed below. The * represents membership in The Sophie Society.
Sister Ann Caire Alumnae Scholarship Endowment
In 1995, the Alumnae Association honored longtime Duchesne leader Sister Ann Caire by naming their scholarship fund in her honor. Sister Caire has served the Duchesne community since the school was founded in 1960, first as the founding Head of School, and then as Head of the Middle School from 2001 until 2009. Sister Caire retired from Duchesne’s administration but continues to faithfully serve the school in the Advancement Department until 2024. Although retired and living in California, Sister Caire continues to share her love of Christ and her enthusiasm for education and service with the entire community.

Sister Jan Dunn Scholarship Endowment
Sr. Dunn has devoted her life to education and enriching the lives of students. She taught English and was later Dean of Students for 15 years at Duchesne, Grand Coteau, and New
Orleans. She was also Headmistress at Duchesne Academy in Omaha for six years. Sister Dunn was Duchesne’s 6th Headmistress, serving from 1996 until her retirement in 2012. During her tenure, Sr. Dunn ushered in the 1:1 laptop program, lead the successful Reaching Up, Branching Out Capital Campaign, and worked to instill the five goals of the Sacred Heart in the young women of Duchesne. “I want each girl to be a child of the Sacred Heart – to know what that means personally to her and to live that vision.” This tuition assistance fund was established as a part of the Reaching Up, Branching Out Capital Campaign to honor Sister Dunn’s faithful service. At Sister Dunn’s request, the Sister Dunn Endowment Fund is to be awarded to two Upper School girls each year who demonstrate a strong aptitude for writing.
