Following on from the first New York leg, the second chapter of The Way Out – A Journey in Search of Freedom starts from the centre of Barcelona before escaping into the wild heart of the Costa Brava, where the Pyrenees infringe on blue waves rippled by the wind and the roads chase each other up the mountain side.

The mimes on Las Ramblas, the unique flair of Gaudì’s architecture and the bars of the Olympic port. The best-known Barcelona is one of music, art and movida. But for those who want to break the mould, we have an alternative route to suggest. And when it comes to escaping the routine, there is only one bike that can guide us, the Diavel 1260.

a breath-taking view out over the maze of streets, teeming with life. We climb up early in the morning, just after dawn, when the houses, buildings and stores are still slumbering, so there is the thrilling sensation that we are witnessing the reawakening of that untamed Catalonian spirit. But once the sun comes up, it is time to take the road that heads north, towards the Costa Brava.

Our first destination is Tossa de Mar, “the blue paradise” of painter Marc Chagall.

The real excitement comes along the next stretch of road, which links Tossa de Mar to Sant Feliu de Guíxols.

A real paradise for those who are keen to exploit the full potential of the Diavel 1260 and enjoy every aspect of roads that unexpectedly open onto what is very rugged, wild nature. Our journey in search of freedom continues along the GI-614.

The road connects the Gulf of Roses with Cadaqués, the hometown of Salvador Dalì, the undisputed genius of Surrealism and one of the most influential Spanish artists of the 20th century. Electrifying and alluring, perhaps a little narrow at times, this strip of asphalt weaves through nature’s dust and rocks. On reaching the typical white houses of Cadaqués, we can

allow ourselves a break. And after a visit to the Dalì museum, we get back in the saddle and twist the throttle as we head for the Cap de Creus natural park.

Reaching Cap de Creus means pushing to our limits to return to our origins. Once here, at Spain’s most easterly point, we can switch off the engine of the Diavel 1260 and let our gaze wander beyond the horizon, finally quenching our thirst for freedom.

Our journey begins at Montjuïc, the panoramic hill a few miles from the centre that immediately offers us an unforgettable, unusual, and breath-taking view of the city. 173 metres high, from Montjuïc we can watch as the metropolis wakes at first light. The Diavel 1260 is fun and dynamic.

Museu de la moto

The passion this Catalan city has for motorcycling runs so deep as to have resulted in a permanent exhibition, dedicated to the history of the motorcycle in Catalunya. The exhibition is a tribute to the 24 Horas Motocilistas de Montjuïc, a city circuit 3.7 km in length. A real must see for enthusiasts.

El Born

We continue our journey down the long strip of asphalt that is Las Ramblas, before reaching El Born, in the Ciutat Vella. Riding the narrow streets of El Born means taking a trip through time, as we explore its maze of streets, bars, stores, and piazzas. In the city, the engine is linear and elastic, offering smooth but powerful drive.

Estació De França

As we approach Barcelona’s train station, we are struck by the elegant building, often compared to the old Gare d’Orsay in Paris. Designed by engineer Andreu Muntaner and architect Pedro Muguruza, the Estació de França was conceived for the International Exhibition of 1929.

The Parc de la Ciutadella is one of the most characteristic sites in Barcelona, a place where street artists and musicians gather each day. We leave Barcelona and head towards Port de la Selva, to the north of the Costa Brava, a route that stands out for its extraordinarily varied landscapes, beautiful beaches, and majestic mountains. The riding mode is now “Sport”, and we fully enjoy the performance that only the Diavel 1260 can offer through the turns and counterturns.

Pan amb tomàquet A rustic slice of toasted bread, spread with tomato and a touch of garlic and dressed with oil and a pinch of salt.

Barcelona has a Mediterranean climate albeit with some slightly different characteristics, like a not insignificant amount of rain in summer and a minimum of rain in winter.

In Barcelona, and throughout Catalunya in fact, the classic Mediterranean climate taken to mean damp winters and warm, dry summers is affected by the region’s position compared to the rest of the Western Mediterranean.
