EDITOR’S NOTES

ISSUE 27

SUMMER IS NOT CANCELLED!

D

espite the current COVID-19 pandemic disrupting everyday life, summer isn’t cancelled (just a bit modified). With that said, many have found a way to get around the pandemic restrictions on large gatherings and so did we - with our DUB Virtual Car Show! We’ve re-scheduled our other DUB Shows for a later date, but felt car enthusiasts still needed an avenue to floss their precious rides and rigs and created an online show. It’s been going on for a few months now, and we’re now showcasing the winners in this issue! There’s still plenty of time to enter and all you have to do is upload a picture of your ride and then the voting begins. If you’re not sure where to start on your soonto-be winning rig, we’ve got more than a few examples to check out in this Issue… Brian Rodriguez carefully maps out his big build projects and his 2020 Jeep Gladiator called

Sunny Delight was no different than past ones. However, this one took a bit more time given he couldn’t decide on a final color scheme, but with a little help from a friend and industry insider, he was able to complete the biggest Jeep build to date! Blake Boatwright is used to getting his hands dirty with Jeeps, but decided it was time to switch things up and make a statement with a full-on truck build. He went with his everyday work horse - a 2013 Ram 2500 - and named it the Black Pearl. However, things didn’t go smoothly and he ran into quite a few challenges, but wouldn’t change a thing once he saw the finished product! As the founding member of notable Nokturnal Car Club, Hector “Paisa” Gutierrez knows a thing or two about great builds. His Toyota Tacoma was never meant to be shown, but he soon changed his mind once he saw the truck’s

potential with just a set of wheels and a lift. From there, he knew he’d have to go all out and create the Tacoma of his customizing dreams. Trent Clark wanted to build something massive and that’s exactly what his 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD is. As one of the most elaborate customs we’ve had in this mag to date, Trent has waited many years for his Bear Edition rig to be complete. But it was all worth the headaches and wait to see it now in all of its glory! We’ve also got all the deets on the 2020 Lone Star Throwdown - one of our favorite shows of the year! As you take inspiration from these pages, don’t forget to check out our departments for mods to make your custom unique and hopefully be voted one of the best in our online car show!

uilding rigs is never easy and the hardest part has to be the uncertainty of it all. A customizer doesn’t know going in if the build will take three weeks, six months or even a year. There’s no way of knowing how many challenges you’ll face, and little did Trent Clark know that his customizing journey would be way longer than expected…

say time, we mean it. While many builds take a few months and maybe a year, this one has been ongoing for eight years. Being in the construction business, something big real big and powerful was needed if it was truly going to be a promotional vehicle.

If you have been to SEMA over the past few years, you have likely seen his beautiful 2007 GMC Sierra 2500HD beast of a machine that breaks all the rules when it comes to performance and appearance. What was supposed to be a moderate corporate promotional truck for his construction company in Calgary, Canada, escalated into an undeniable attention grabber for clients, requiring loads of time, money and patience. And when we

31

The truck was first leased as a stock 2500HD and the initial thought was to obtain a rig that would perform well and feature the ability to pull a heavy work trailer. To reach these goals, a 6” lift , custom wheels wrapped and bigger tires and fender flares were added for a more aggressive look. For power, a second turbo, head studs, mild ATS transmission, Edge monitor, straight-pipe exhaust, SSBC brakes, and 100-percent-over injectors were all added. Just these upgrades alone drew attention when it arrived at work sites, but there was a catch and cost. With all of the extra horsepower, the engine died, which only meant a custom-built engine was now needed. SoCal Diesel was called in for a solution and a custom-built Duramax quickly followed, allowing for more air and fuel, in addition to a triple turbo setup, 2-stage NOS system, and a 265-GPH FASS system. What seemed like a good idea in being able to handle more power turned out to be a bit of a mistake, as the truck was not very driveable.

32

33

To fix this problem with the GMC, the truck was sent to one of the best in the industry when it comes to Duramax motors - Rob Coddens (“Idaho Rob”) of Adrenaline Truck Performance in Meridian, Idaho. The triple turbo setup was taken out in favor of a compound turbo setup consisting of 106mm and 68mm Garrett ball bearing turbos and the FASS system was upgraded to 220 GPH and the s. With Rob involved, the company once again had a streetable promotional truck, with testing on dyno using (pump fuel alone) it reached 1,246 rwhp and was not anywhere near reaching its full potential. Not to be out done by power, the truck then received a powder coated 8” Bulletproof Suspension lift kit, American Force wheels, Nitto tires, custom side steps, a partial exterior wrap and a complete Hertz audio system. All seemed well until yet again the engine went boom...again (“Yes, again!,” he exclaims). The GMC was then sent off to Curtis Halvorson of Extreme Engine Development in Calgary, Canada. With further mods to the already-built SoCal motor, a new animal was born. Yet again, this created another new problem for Trent and the GMC. This time, the ATS-built transmission could not be held together. Billet input, output, and intermediate shafts, along with a billet flywheel and with an oversized spring and Stage 6 PPE Clutch Pack were what many thought would be required. But that wasn’t the case and a series of transmissions were abruptly brutalized. Not to be denied, a solution was found - a Commercial Powertrain stepped up with a 2,000-hp transmission warranty utilizing their custom clutch kit and valve body.

34

Finally, everything was holding together when yet another disaster struck; white smoke and the smell of diesel fuel closed down a major street as a result of an injector, the block being dropped. Within two weeks of dropping the injector, the engine had a cracked block and broken crankshaft. Many would have thrown in the towel on the build by now (and Trent did have some serious reservations), but this was just another setup in the epic build. Curtis Halvorson was once again called up to the game by stuffing into the LMM motor whatever he felt would result in it holding together. The fueling performance boost was done with the addition of a custom Dynomite Diesel Products (DDP) 275-percent-over injectors and a 12mm Exergy fuel injection pump to replace one of the stock CP3 units. The FASS system was once again upgraded to 260 GPH. With power and performance finally fixed and ready to go, the only thing left to do was finally make it a show queen to be taken to shows and be loved by all. This was done via custom airbrushing by MOB Airbrush, a 12” Bulletproof Suspension lift, custom audio enclosure in the bed and many interior upgrades. The machined 30x16 Kompression Wheels set off it’s gigantic stance. Trigger Industries and Schultz Diesel Sports combined forces to create a one-off 18” air suspension along with and continual modifications to the interior by Trim Pro. With EPA shutting down ATPTrucks (“Idaho Rob”) Schultz Diesel Sports provided the final piece of the puzzle as they managed all of the tuning and build aspects, including all adjustments to the driveline (in conjunction with Driveline Specialist Inc.), transmission and suspension. After the long journey, the rig was finally complete and Trent relished in the outcome. He had waited years for the moment when it would be declared done and now takes pride in all the blood, sweat and tears put into this massive GMC build. “This truck is wild in every way,” he explains. “There’s no other truck in the world like it today.” And Trent wouldn’t have it any other way.

eing known for his Jeep builds throughout the industry, Blake Boatwright wanted to branch out and make a statement, so he changed things up and decided to makeover a truck. He went with his personal 2013 Ram 2500 that would debut at SEMA 2018. Blake chose the Ram to stick with the Mopar family that he already appreciates and loves. He named it “Black Pearl” and went with the same color scheme as his wife’s Jeep. Since he was from the Jeep world, Blake didn’t know too much about truck suspensions, but knew it wouldn’t be too hard to figure out with his vast industry knowledge. “I knew I wanted something huge and something that would stand out,” he describes. “I found Ultimate Air Ride and love the thought of being able to set the truck’s suspension at different heights.” The suspension also allows him to adjust the truck’s height for optimal daily drives given he still needed it to be functional instead of just purely for show. Other than figuring out the suspension, the initial design process for the build was fairly simple for Blake. He reached out to his pals at KEG Media and gave them his ideas, and they produced the perfect representation of what he had first imagined. While the initial rendering featured tons of golden touches, the end result now features gray and black hues, which makes the truck a bit darker and similar to the pirate ship it’s named after, he mentions. “The all-blue suspension was chosen to represent the ocean,” he adds.

39

His other favorite highlight is the bed covered in SEADEK. “Getting to work with a company that specializes in boat decking was awesome because they have never been part of something like this. My bed is different from the rest and no one else has it, which sets me apart from others.” Other highlights of the rig include the gray frame that was painted by Blake’s good friend Randi Nedli (painter at Complete Customs). “The amount of work he put in it really made me appreciate the detail on the build.” Another favorite company Blake met building this truck was BAMF LED. They set him up with the brightest rock lights on the market, he mentions, which are controlled via an integrated iPad pro built into the center console. “I got to meet a lot of great people and work with other companies that I usually don’t work with on the Jeep side. One of the positives on building a truck was I had more space than a Jeep, too.” With the newfound space, he went with a set of HornBlasters where the spare tire was supposed to go.

40

41

Although he established relationships with new companies, he still worked with some of his favorites that had crossover parts, which included Boost Bars, Roadwire, Lockerdown, HornBlasters, JL Audio, Monster Hooks, Diode Dynamics, Fury Tires, ECD Wraps, and True Spike Lug Nuts. “It’s Incredible to be trusted by these companies to build an incredible vehicle to displace their products,” he shares. The original version of the build was shown in the American Force Wheels booth, taking about eight months to complete. But it wasn’t the easiest build for Blake despite how excited he was with the outcome. “I learned a lot building this truck, but with that said, I’ll be sticking to Jeeps as my base vehicle for upcoming builds.” They had a lot of problems every step of the way, learning that the “curse of the Black Pearl was real.” Blake and Complete Customs had issues with almost every part of the build from the smallest suspension parts not fitting correctly to electrical problems. “Every time the team would concur one problem another would arise. But the team At Complete Customs poured blood, sweat and tears into this build.”

42

Even after SEMA, Blake ran into more problems and had to restart the build after the wheels, tires, suspension, lighting and accessories were literally stolen off the truck, leaving it slammed to the ground on Christmas day. Not one to step away from a challenge, he reached out to all his friends in the industry and got Black Pearl back up and running. “We now had the opportunity to run the new GRID Off-Road 28x16 concave wheels wrapped in 42x15.50R28 Fury tires. My good friend Rob at PLAN B FAB got me the suspension parts needed to fix the damaged front end and get the Black Pearl Back to normal.” The final version was then shown at the Off-Road Expo last year with GRID Off-Road and continued to make its rounds on the show circuit for the rest of 2019. “I have learned a lot through this experience of building my first SEMA truck. We have many builds to come and better bet they will all be Jeeps!”

2018 JEEP GLADIATOR WORDS: KRISTIE REAL | PHOTOS: BRIAN MCGEE

E

ach year, Brian Rodriguez carefully maps out his big build project. The avid off-road enthusiast and owner of 44 Industries Inc. (part of Socal Tint Shop in Chino, CA) has been in the scene for years, having seen and done it all. His veteran knowledge has afforded him the experience needed to tackle any build and this year’s main objective was to create an off-road adventure rig that could also be enjoyed on the daily. “I never like anything that I can just drive on the streets,” he admits. “Instead, I go right for something that can hit the dirt, desert and mountains, or wherever the road takes me.” With tons of experience dressing up Jeeps, the Gladiator was a natural choice as the base vehicle given it was fresh and new when Brian began the project. For Brian, the hardest part about his Gladiator build (which he’s nicknamed “Sunny Delight” after two beloved cat pets he had years ago) was choosing a color scheme. According to him, he changed his mind almost weekly, which made for a lot of changes to his initial design concepts. Since his Gladiator was the first unit sold on the West Coast, his only choice was Silver. “One of the major companies that supported the build was GRID Off-Road and they asked us to wrap it with something that would be easy on the eyes, and I think I more than delivered.”

46

After the color scheme was chosen, Brian did as much research as he could, getting feedback from Gladiator Jeep forums and friends about the design and mods. “But then, all of a sudden, things got radical real quick,” he explains. “I changed the vision to something that would captivate you no matter if you saw it driving or parked. We designed the warp to make it look like it’s always moving somewhere.” Although he’s been working with various companies for years now, Brian credits Tony Madrigal of GRID Off-Road for helping make this build come to life. “He’s been a big supporter of mine and has assisted in lining up sponsors or pointing me in the right direction. I have to give him credit for this build and he’s been a good friend. I’m always bouncing my crazy ideas off of him.”

The first mod installation for the Gladiator was a Fabtech suspension, with Brian mentioning that they used the Gladiator to create a few alternative setups for the Jeep for them to bring to market. “Fabtech has always been great. They’ve been involved with all my builds and have always shown me love. The 20x10 GRID Off-Road GD12 wrapped in 37x13.5x20 General Tire Grabber X3 tires is another favorite mod as he described how the set up enhanced the overall stance and look of the Jeep. But it’s the wrap that made it more than just another Jeep at SEMA, he declares. “There were a lot of bigger, louder Jeeps at the show, but there was something special about mine that everyone loved. I’m proud to say that I’ll drive this Gladiator anywhere and anytime. The wrap really brings the whole thing together.”

47

So far, the response from fans has been great. Somedays, Brian has admiring fans come into the shop just to take a picture of the Gladiator sitting outside in the parking lot. “There was this one time where a car did a complete U-turn to come and check out the Jeep in all of its glory. There have also been times when people have recorded me while driving (I don’t recommend this, though). It’s a pretty cool feeling to have people admire your project.” And with more than 200 man hours put into the project, Brian deserves the attention he’s getting!

48

49

50

Although he’s happy with the outcome, he still plans on adding more to the Gladiator. “It’ll undergo the knife one last time. We are planning an all-new wrap design and want to add new products before I pass it to another owner to enjoy so that I can move on to the next build. I wish I could keep all my builds, but in order to continue doing this, I have to sell them. But I already have some things lined up for the next one, so be on the lookout!”

:: 2018 TOYOTA TACOMA

H

ector “Paisa” Gutierrez knows a thing or two about great builds. After all, the veteran automotive enthusiast was a founding member of one of the nation’s largest car clubs Nokturnal. With more than 20 years of car show scene, he knows the qualifications of an awardwinning custom, the work that goes into building one and the efforts needed to prepare. Although his Nocturnal days are over, he still has a passion for building and his latest creation demonstrates just how deep that passion is. The Toyota Tacoma was actually never supposed to be shown, initially buying it as a daily driver - which it was for almost two years. “It had a small 6” suspension and some TIS wheels, but nothing more,” he confesses. “I didn’t even know I wanted more until John Ramos of DUB Magazine mentioned I should build it up for SEMA. I had never built anything for SEMA before, so I figured why not?”

54

55

With a mission to create something SEMA worthy, Hector began the road to the big show an experience he’s waited a long time for. Under the guidance of John, his preparation was fairly seamless and uncomplicated - a rare event for many builders. The first step in the build process was the stance for the Tacoma, which was enhanced via a 12” Bulletproof Suspension that provided it with its dominant height needed to garner the glances needed to make it a competitor among a sea of other builds. He then switched out his TIS wheels for a set of 24x14 Dropstars 657 wheels and wrapped them in 40” Nitto Grapplers. “The wheels have to be my favorite mod,” he says. “Just the look they give the truck really sets off the entire build and helps with its aggressive exterior.”

56

57

Not wanting to take away too much from the Tacoma’s look, Hector went for a few subtle additions, including Fab Four bumpers, Heise lighting (in the form of cubes and bars), Oracle undercarriage lighting and upgraded the stock filter to a K&N one for more horsepower (when he did drive it on the weekends and to and from shows). The RK Sport hood provides a menacing look, while the AMP Research steps make getting in and out of the lifted rig a breeze. Other mods include: a Borla exhaust, HornBlaster air horns, DUB IR Tint, ARE roof rack and shell, and an Optima battery. The orange graphics give the Toyota a clean, yet standout look that Hector was initially striving for. Inside, a Kenwood sound system bumps his favorite tunes on the weekends. “The entire build came out just as I first envisioned it,” he admits. “I couldn’t have asked for anymore more and think it came out great!” As his first “big” build, Hector enjoyed the road to SEMA and is already planning on what his next project will be. “Not dealing with airbags was a huge relief, and I’m looking forward to what’s next!”

HE WISHED, HE DREAMED, AND HE ACHIEVED. JUAN ZAMUDIO’S JOURNEY TO OBTAINING HIS ULTIMATE GOAL.

W

hat lengths would you go to, to achieve a goal or a dream? What gives someone the inspiration or the drive to achieve these things? Inspiration can be found everywhere, but for Juan Zamudio, it came from deep in his childhood memories. Juan grew up in a small agriculture town Shafter, CA (about 14 miles northwest of Bakersfield), wrenching on automobiles and trucks. “I was brought into the truck scene by my older brother Rafael. I watched him work on all of his trucks in our garage and knew that one day I would want to build one of my own.”

63

Fast forward many years, Juan got a driver’s license, a blue-collar job and had visions of someday working on a special truck project. His first build was a lowered 2004 GMC 1500, which then made way for a 2007 Cadillac Escalade EXT a few years later. As he matured, so did his builds. Each truck was bigger and better than its predecessor. Years of blood, sweat, and scraping together every penny he earned, led him to his greatest build to date. “I wanted a late-model diesel truck that I could use as a daily driver and possibly do a few modifications.” While scouring the Internet, he found a semi-customized 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 HD just a few hours away in Anaheim, CA. The truck became his on the same day he found it online, which he had already been designing in his mind the moment he saw it.

Juan came across a post on Instagram from “Truck Guru,” needing vehicles for the upcoming 2019 SEMA Show. After exchanging messages a few times, he teamed up with Truck Guru for a complete build. Then life threw a little “wrench” in those plans - Juan’s wife Vanessa was pregnant! Vanessa, Juan’s high-school sweetheart, knew what this build meant to him so she gave him her blessings to go through with it. All systems were a go, and Juan’s truck was sent off to Performance Offroad in Bakersfield for its transformation. Once Performance Offroad finished working their magic, Juan ferried his pride and joy to Professional Car Audio in Porterville, CA, for its final upgrade - a killer audio/entertainment system. Just as the truck was finishing up at the audio shop, Vanessa went into labor with their son, Maximus. It turns out, 2019 was a pretty epic year for Juan with a huge build and a beautiful baby boy born August 15 th ! Juan is living proof that anything is achievable if you have the vision and are willing to do whatever it takes!

TEXAS SHOOTOUT LONE STAR THROWDOWN 2020

I

f you by any way dig custom trucks, Lone Star Throwdown (LST) is a must event to attend. Simply put, this show brings out more trucks than any other event in the nation. Though there are all types of customs present, it is now dominated by skyhigh pickups with large rollers. We can also tell you that it’s a must stop for the top builders and it doesn’t seem to be slowing down anytime soon. Starting off in 2012, LST was first held at the same location it is at now, the Montgomery County Fairgrounds in Conroe, TX. The humble beginnings were conceived when Todd “Radar” Hendrex and Lonnie Ford felt a need for a better show with a relaxed type atmosphere. Little did they know that LST would grow from a just few hundred vehicles to having a cap of 2,000 preregistrations, which are sold out months before the gates open.

68

69

THE SCENE A lot of appeal to this event is the custom billet awards made by Philbuilt Designs. There are not too many of them given out either as just the “Top 100” vehicles are chosen to receive them along with a few special others like the “Best of” recipients. These awards are truly special and it’s no wonder why so many top-notch vehicles make it out each year. With such stiff competition, builders bring their A-game just for the chance at winning some of this coveted hardware. However, not all that show up are there for the sake of the awards. Most are there just to take it all in and enjoy the sights along the way. We have been to many events around the world and we can tell you that there is no other show like LST. By simply walking around the grounds, you will able to witness history as this event is monumental to the scene. One of the coolest things about the event is the cruising, which makes for a rolling spectacle. This is one of our favorite parts as you get the chance to see most of the vehicles in action while roaming around. Though we must bring to your attention that doing donuts or burnouts is strictly prohibited. There was an altercation this year and the driver of a certain vehicle was ultimately arrested. We strongly urge everyone to respect the rules so that events like this can continue for all of us to enjoy. With that being said, if you do want to join in on all the festivities, you can get the latest info by checking out the official Instagram page, @lonestarthrowdown. And, we do suggest making plans far ahead of time as flight options thin out quick and hotels get fully booked each year. As for this past event, we had another great time at the show, and we would like to thank the entire staff for pulling it all off once again!
