/’ n this, my first year as Chairman of Dublin Port, 1 am happy to record anotheryear ofstability in most areas of port operations. Progress continues to be made in attracting trade back to the Port. In fact, throughput figures for non-oil traffic are extremely heartening when all the various influencing factors are taken into consideration.

In the Millennium year just finished, Dublin Port adopted a constructive and participative approach to the various activities. Hopefully many more people now realise that it was the development of Dublin as a port and landing area for cargo, which led to its growth and development into the vibrant living organism we know today.

Because of my long family connection with the port oriented constituency of Dublin Central, I have long had a personal interest in the development of Dublin Port. The modem facilities which exist in the port today are a credit to my predecessors as Chairman of Dublin Port and to the staff of the Pori Board. The change from the labour intensive industry of earlier years to the capital intensive, highly technoloigcal industry of today has had many effects on employment levels in the area. However, the investment in facilities has guaranteed a higher quality and greater security of employment then heretofore.

My personal high level of interest in the environment will continue during my tenure in office and the Port Board's commitment to the preservation and enhancement of the many environmental features of Dublin Port and inner bay area will guarantee the future of this major attraction in our city and port.
