Your Festival Your Vote – Audience Award
The Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival Audience Award is recognition of flmmakers and their incredible hard work, devotion and passion for flm. Every flm you attend both online and physically in theatres entitles you to a vote. You can access the voting through the “My Tickets” section of our website and will receive a reminder via email after the screening. Virtual Screenings will prompt you to vote after watching. Each vote really does count! It means so much to all of our flmmakers. The overall winner will receive a monetary prize, which can be career changing and catapult their production.

The Arts Council is delighted to have supported the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival in its 20 years as a celebration of cinema and as a key event in the national arts calendar.
In this, its 20th year, Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival will continue to bring its curated programme of Irish and international flm to audiences in Dublin and give flm makers and artists a platform for their work over twelve days in February/March. This year the festival will give audiences an opportunity to experience a diverse and exciting cinema programme and engage with flm-makers and flm-making talent at a range of Q&As, discussions and events.
Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival has a longstanding partnership with the Arts Council on the Reel Art creative documentary scheme and it is a delight to see that three Reel Art flms will premiere at this year’s festival. They are How To Tell A Secret by Anna Rodgers, Alan Gilsenan’s Baggotonia and North Circular by Luke McManus.
In addition, this year the Festival will be hosting the IFI premiere of Donal Foreman’s The Cry of Granuaile which was made under the Arts Council’s Authored Works scheme. The Cry of Granuaile is a dense and sensuous mix of road movie, psychodrama and historical essay that gradually pulls itself apart as lines blur between past and present, dream and reality.
In 2022 Dublin International Film Festival will continue its partnership with Access Cinema and will tour Blerta Basholli’s debut flm HIVE to arts centres outside Dublin during the festival. This will give audiences outside the city centre the opportunity to experience the festival in their local communities.
We look forward to the return of Picture House, when circumstances allow, which will bring Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival into care homes and ensure audiences there can enjoy the festival experience.

My warmest congratulations to all involved in the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival as they celebrate their 20th year.
Over the past two decades, the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival has been at the heart of Irish creative life. Irish life through a lens has been captured onscreen as flmmakers, writers and actors have championed and documented who we are as a people throughout Ireland and across the world.
The festival has brought both emerging and established Irish flmmakers to thrill, inform, engage and entertain audiences every year. Often, the Festival has been the place where flmmakers launch their stories out into the world for the very frst time and where new flmmaking talent has been discovered.
Cinema remains one of the most accessible and impactful of the artforms, a unique experience of being immersed in a story on the big screen. The added excitement of viewing a new flm in a festival environment and sharing that with an audience is a very special experience.
We all have our favourite movie memories of the Festival as it reaches its milestone year, in what has been very challenging times for both cinemas and festivals across the globe. As our screen industries continue to experience extraordinary creative growth, it is even more important for us to support our capital’s flm festival, which contributes to bringing Irish cinema to life.

We are delighted to return for our fourth year of our partnership with the Dublin International Film Festival. After a fully digital festival in 2021 we are really excited about getting back into the cinema and experiencing the thrill of the big screen while also giving audiences the chance to experience a selection of the festival line-up through virtual screenings.
Audiences are in for a treat this year; The festival line-up is a celebration of the very best in storytelling from Ireland and around the world. It is a hugely exciting and diverse programme with hundreds of screenings along with lectures, discussions, festivals, workshops, and the chance to meet Irish and International flmmakers.
Film has a unique power to tap into our emotions and change how we see our world and each other. Films are a wonderful means of escape, of being transported for a couple of hours to other places and into other lives. The joy of being back in the cinema, for the festival, is hard to overstate. Last year we delivered a festival online, adapting in a short space of time to a new way of being. This year, we have a model which allows those who are ready and happy to be present together enjoying a cinematic experience, to do so, and for those perhaps who cannot be with us in person, to join us online again. All of this has been made possible by an incredible team of people. Whilst working remotely they have dedicated themselves to delivering a great festival experience for our audience. I would like to say to them, we recognize your hard work and dedication, and thank you for it.

Welcome to the 2022 Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival.
We are delighted to be back where we belong on cinema screens across the city and bringing the best of world cinema to Dublin and to select cinemas across the country. However, to enable participation from audiences across Ireland we will include almost 50% of our flms as well as many of our industry events online.
This year’s festival line-up is rich and varied, bursting with new flms by established names such as Gasper Noe and Claire Denis and dazzling debuts and discoveries from Irish flmmakers and their international peers. Our Opening Night is the glorious An Cailín Ciúin which is one of the fnest flms of recent memory, the flm leads a superb Irish season with debut features, some wonderful independent documentaries and three new flms made under the Arts Council Reel Art scheme. A very special mention for our Inaugural Lord Mayor’s Gala screening of Young Plato a beautiful new flm which will inspire and delight.
While many of us have felt trapped at home over the past two years, come see the world with Contemporary World Cinema strand which will showcase flms from around the world including the very best new cinema from Hungary, Australia, Norway, Iran, Malta, Wales, Korea, Croatia and many many more.
This year’s programme celebrates 4 essentials of modern life; music, flm, food and humour. We have gathered our programme strands this year which we hope will provide alternate pathways through this years programme.
Music: A music strand will celebrate a range of musical genres from traditional music of Peader O’Riada and Liam Weldon to the musical legacy of a-ha to the vibrant rap scene of contemporary Morocco.
Food: a trio of delicious treats with a documentary about Julia Child, the Welsh hit The Feast and the sumptuous French flm Délicieux.
Humour: a season of comedy flms from around the world – Icelandic cop comedy Cop
Secret, a pair of Spanish comedies The Good Boss and The Odd Job Men and the German romantic comedy Nö. And Neil Brand will being his special celebrations of the comedy duo
Laurel & Hardy.
Film: A quirky season about cinema itself. The season includes the wonderful new flm from Chinese maestro Zhang Yimou One Second, Donal Foreman’s much anticipated new flm The Cry of Granuaile, Mia Hansen Love’s Bergman Island and a wonderful documentary about Hong Kong flmmaker Ann Hui.
Our Closing Night flm is the fascinating documentary My Old School with special guest Alan Cumming who is just one of a number of guests who we are delighted to welcome to the festival. The 2022 Festival Retrospective will focus on the work of the iconic French flmmaker Sarah Maldoror and we are delighted to present a small selection of her work including the classic Sambizanga which will be introduced by her daughter Annouchka de Andrade. There is a wide range of public events to entice you including a panel discussion on Conversations with Friends, a live recording of The Best Bits Podcast and please check out the work of the talented design students from NCAD who have delivered a wonderful new collection of flm posters.
The festival was founded in 2003 by flm producer David McLoughlin and flm critic Michael Dywer who believed that Dublin needed its own flm festival and we will mark its 20th anniversary with a special season of screenings, exhibition and an oral history with the flmmakers, organisers and audiences who were there.
I would like to recognise the wonderful festival team whose work is refected in this year’s event and my previous colleagues who have helped us reach this milestone. A special shout out to the members of the programming team and our Board of Directors who give tirelessly of their time. We have an incredible list of sponsors and partners and I would like to thank them and in particular our Title Sponsor Virgin Media and our longterm partner Screen Ireland. In this our Anniversary year, I would especially like to mention the Arts Council who have supported the festival since the very start and whose encouragement and engagement has been vital in reaching our 20th Year. And the two groups without whom the festival does not exist – the brilliant and inspiring flmmakers whose flms we present and the audiences who complete the artform.
But I will leave the last word to Michael, whose hopes for the frst festival still ring true. ‘I hope that the festival will leave you, the viewer, alternately moved, amused, entertained and stimulated.

A drugs dealer attempts to go straight - by pulling of one last big job - in Stephen Fingleton’s (The Survivalist) immersive thriller. Set over the course of one night in Belfast, Nightride was shot in a real-time, oneshot style, giving it a sense of urgency and immediacy.
The action, laced with dark humour, centres on Budge as he attempts to close a deal with cash borrowed from a ruthless loan shark.

In 1985, the late Michael Dwyer launched the frst Dublin Film Festival. The inaugural festival had a diverse programme that contained such future classics as Heimat, Insignifcance and The Ofcial Version. Only after the programme had gone to press, did he and fellow founder Myles Dungan discover that they were one flm short. With characteristic fair, Michael Dwyer turned this potential mishap into one of the most beloved slots in the festival; the Surprise Film. In the 32 years since the frst Surprise Film, the structure of the festival has changed only slightly. Each year, the Surprise Film is shown amid great speculation and no one – not even the projectionist – knows the flm’s title until the frst few frames on screen slowly reveal it’s true identity. ICCL Human Rights Film Award
The Irish Council for Civil Liberties (ICCL) established the Human Rights Film Award in 2008 to recognise the role of flm in raising awareness of human rights issues around the world. In 2019, the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival and ICCL relaunched the ICCL Human Rights Film
Award as an integral part of the VMDIFF programme. The award celebrates flms that enable audiences to explore human rights stories of all kinds, and honours flmmakers whose work argues passionately for a better world. The presentation of the Lifetime Contribution Award will take place alongside our annual Human Rights Film Award.

Ireland’s professional flm critics will announce their awards for Best Film, Best Director, Best Irish Film, Best Documentary and Best Performances from the 2022 festival lineup.
NCAD Poster Exhibition
For flmmakers, the flm poster represents the most dynamic representation of their flm, and I would argue that this is the crucial piece of marketing and promotion. For the festival, our collaboration with NCAD and the resultant poster exhibition allows us to present an exhibition of posters drawn from the flm programme, which act as a marketing and promotional tool for both the festival itself and the individual
flms. The exhibition is hung in the foyer of the Lighthouse Cinema and acts as a visual shorthand to approximately one-third of the flms being screened at the festival. As such, it represents both the Irish and international nature of the festival. Artworks include both traditional flm poster design with fonts and actor’s names, but also highly imaginative, original approaches as well. The posters are a fascinating engagement with the individual flms, even without the seeing the flms themselves. For me, this annual collaboration with Brendon Deacy, Philip Kennedy and NCAD students is a key element of our festival. Audiences and flmmakers love this exhibition, favourably comparing the students’ work with the more commercial artwork created by studios. There is real engagement by audiences through this exhibition, evidenced by many requests to purchase the work, and I believe the richness and sophistication of the posters highlights the talent of the NCAD students. I look forward to working with Brendon, his colleagues and students in the years to come.

Irreverent flm podcast “The Best Bits” is hosted by Cork screenwriters Will Collins and Kevin Lehane, who separately have written the flms Wolfwalkers, Song of the Sea, and Grabbers, as well as TV, like Neil Gaiman’s Likely Stories. Often joined by expert guests, each week they pick their favourite scenes from randomly selected flms using weirdly specifc themes, like: Best Fight Scene, Best Single-Take Scene and Best Jump Scare. DIFF will host their frst-ever (and therefore bestever) live episode, where Collins and Lehane will be joined by two special guests: flmmakers Conor McMahon and Kate Dolan, to pick their favourite scene from a horror/comedy.

Conversations with Friends is an upcoming television series developed by Element Pictures for BBC Three and Hulu based on the 2017 novel of the same name by Sally Rooney. Conversations with Friends follows Frances (Alison Oliver), a 21-year-old college student, as she navigates a series of relationships that force her to confront her own vulnerabilities for the frst time. Join director Lenny Abrahamsom and producers xx as they talk us through the flmmaking process of the most anticipated TV show of 2022.

Now in its 3rd year, First Frame targets the 17 third-level institutions across Ireland that ofer flm-related courses in order to encourage students to attend the flms and events that comprise our programme, inspiring student engagement and flm appreciation. This year, we have expanded our student flm initiative with two live events in Dublin and Cork, as well as a competition online. First Frame is built upon a carefully curated selection of short flms made by these students, and begins with a morning of talks and workshops, followed by an afternoon of screening sessions. The day caps of with an awards reception, where the winning flm is announced. DIFF is delighted to acknowledge the support of Warner Brothers Ireland in the continued success of First Frame.

Raising Films Ireland Launch Event
Raising Films Ireland, supporting and advocating for the rights of parents and carers in the screen industry, will launch the groundbreaking results of its frst report at DIFF. The Pursuit of Change surveyed over 450 professionals and reveals the shocking extent to which a “lost generation” has been forced to choose between a career and home life because of a lack of fexibility and prejudice. The research team was led by Raising Films Ireland Board member Dr Susan Liddy (MIC, University of Limerick) and included Dr Anne O Brien and Fergal Rhatigan of Maynooth University.
