Issue # 2

A Word from our Club Captain, Tejan Fadlu-Deen pitchmarks. It’s a scourge we’d really like to get rid of at the club.
Dear Members, This is the second Newsletter from the Creek and although we haven’t heard too much feedback from the first one, I get the general feeling it was well received by everyone. Thanks again to Paula Savage for taking this great initiative to keep the members up to date about what’s going on at the Creek. I know everyone enjoyed the Members Party last month at the Boardwalk, although a lot of people would like to have it back at its original venue so we can enjoy the “afters” a bit more like the old times. That should hopefully happen next year.
I’m not quite sure if the comments made last time about the pitch marks on the greens and divots on the fairways not being repaired are being listened to, but to be putting on greens every week that look like they have bad case of acne is definitely not fun for anyone. We’re hoping the Creek will introduce some sort of fining system for players who don’t repair divots or pitch marks. I’d also like to ask members to call out other players seen not repairing their
We will have one of our first “novelty” competitions coming soon for our competition starved members. This will be a five club Challenge which will hopefully be a lot of fun for everyone with some fantastic prizes to be given away after the event: “Longest Drive with your putter from the back tees on the 8th hole” will be one of them! Everyone has plenty time to think about which 5 clubs they will select to tackle the course!!! I hope all members will sign up for it, as it promises to be a fun and challenging day!!
Lady Club Captain, Paula Savage, says….. Thank you for all the kind words of support following the launch of our newsletter, it’s nice to hear you have enjoyed reading it – long may it continue! Well, what a fabulous month we had in February, a highlight of course being the annual Member’s Party. As you will see from our photos a spectacular evening was had by all. Congratulations to all concerned for a truly memorable evening. Tejan, you should have stuck with me – I found the party until the wee hours of the morning!! Sign up, Sign up, for the Club Championships and the ever popular Masters Par 3 tournament. Enjoy the glorious weather, the fabulous condition of the golf course and the wonderful dining outlets here at the Creek. Until next month…. Happy golfing!
Getting to know you….. Say hello to our lovely ladies and gents who meet and greet us every day as we enter the Club. First impressions are always the most important and our receptionists certainly make the right impression with both members and visitors alike. Thank you for the warm welcome and the assistance in calling for taxis after another hard day on the golf course and at the 19th hole!

The Savage Garden by Mr Neil Taylor
Everyone who is still interested, well done, this is issue two, and further education of Dubai Creek guests , pay attention I shall be asking questions next month (no prizes). Sitting around the pool and enjoying your lunch could turn out to be a cullinary adventure as these colourful birds may add an extra dressing to your salad that you may not appreciate, it looks a bit like pepper but tastes a lot different, any discomfort witnessed over lunch can be adjusted back on the sunbed as these birds are pretty good singers, this bird is resident in the UAE and probably originates from escapees, a trip down the pet souk’s will usually turn up a few cages of these birds, who would not want to escape from that environment and live on our golf course, the odd potentially fatal missile or club cat is an acceptable risk. Ok, who has seen one of these? Maybe the greenkeeper and his staff, it was previously unknown to science until I photographed this one, just kidding! But they are still being studied by the experts and not much is known about them, what i do know is that it is a species of dessert ground praying mantis, i assume that as most praying mantis it is a surprisingly strong flyer and may turn up any time on a short vacation from the dessert to dubai for a bit of rain, it will not stay long, the tramping feet, groundsmen and indian rollers will soon persuade it that golf courses are not for him. The 3rd green just before dusk is the best place to see the ring necked parakeet (far left) swooping in to roost in the trees on the left, everyone hears them first, most people recognise the very loud screaming «kee-ak»as a parrot, again they are resident and are originated from escapees from the local markets, we have small roosts on our course, the Faldo has a few large one’s An Englishman walked into LakeView with a Ring Necked Parakeet on his shoulder last Ladies Day. The Lady Captain as inquisitive as ever asks, “Where did you get that thing? The parrot replies, “In the UK, there are millions of them!” www.anibirds.co.uk

PING Dubai Creek Ladies Amateur Open
The 2014 PING Dubai Creek Ladies Amateur Open took place on Friday 21st February 2014. Windy conditions provided a tough test for the ladies on the stunning but demanding Creek course. Yas Links member, Sana Tufail, champion of the event in 2011 and 2012, again showed some great form as she shot a new ladies course record of 3 under par 68 to be crowned champion once again. In the Silver Division it was Creek member Marie-Amelie Burty who was victorious with a solid 1 over par net 72. The home course advantage showed in the Bronze Division with a Creek 1 and 2. Kuson Waimer took top spot with a fantastic 1 under par net 70 and fellow member Mini Philip was just one back in runner up spot on 71. Our thanks go to our generous sponsors David Stevenson of ProSports and Steve Carter of PING.
The inaugural event took place on Thursday 6th February. Falcon Golf Arabia and Dubai Creek have come together and launched Falcon Thursdays as a chance for everyone to enjoy a fun evening of golf, no matter their experience or level. Competitors can chose to play one of three competitions held on the Palm Par 3 course, Pearl Putting course, and the Dubai Creek Academy Golf Simulator. On the Palm Par 3 course the main story was young Fardeen Meeran who aced the 9th hole and took victory with a fantastic score of net 24.5. Ashok Kumar took the Men’s division title with a 24.9, whilst the Ladies division was won by Gisela Brandt with a net 25. Ladies Locker Room News
It gives me great pleasure to inform you that the Creek Ladies team have made it through to the final of the Inter Club Challenge, due to be played at Yas Links on 22nd April. To date, we still do not know who we will meet in the final but we are delighted to be there and are ready to defend the trophy we won last year. Go Creek Ladies!! Many congratulations to lady vice captain, Harini White, for taking top honours, scoring an impressive net 67 to win by 2 clear shots. Picking up the most prizes on the day was French golfer Veronique Rossett claiming best gross, nearest the pin on hole 14 and also longest drive of the day. With this win Harini jumps up to second place in the order of merit behind new leader Glory Xavier, whilst January strokeplay winner Daniela Sacchini moves back to third place.

Fardeen Meeran continued his recent form with a superb net 32 which earned him top honours. Punya Khanna with a net 33.5 won the Boy’s Division and saw him go top of the order of merit, 10 points ahead of last month’s winner, Kabir Nanda. Best Gross was won by Arkesh Bhatia with a 1 over par 36 and he also picked up a prize for his tee shot on the par 3, 8th in the nearest the pin competition there whilst Adam Savage did the same on the par 3 5th. Congratulations to all the boys for their participation and to George Horan and his Dubai Duty Free team for their wonderful support of this event.
You know that sinking feeling, when the water here on the course just seems to be a magnet to your golf ball, well spare a thought for your very own Lady Capt, whose whole bag and trolley launched themselves into the lake on the 10th – didn’t think my golf was going that badly?! Huge thanks to Matthew Perry, Jonas and his team for their very prompt rescue and recovery service.
