Dragon Boat Festival
Let’s beat the drums and awaken the dragon at the Dubai Creek Dragon Boat Festival. Under the patronage of the UAE Sailing and Rowing Federation, Dubai Creek Marina and the International Dragon Boat Federation invite you to watch the live action on the water on 29th November between 11am and 6pm. There will be 10 teams battling their way to victory in the 500 metre Competitive Team Challenge alongside the 200 metre Corporate Fun Race.

Getting your bearings on the High Seas
Owning a boat is more affordable and easier than you might think - if you know where to look. Abdulla Ali Al Noon, Marina Operations Manager of Dubai Creek Marina provides tips for navigating the preowned boat market.

Regardless of budget it’s an exciting prospect, especially in Dubai with the attractions of year round sunshine, water sports, and residential islands as a picture perfect view. But before ‘diving straight in’ at the deep end there are some important questions to ask yourself and the experts.
One man who knows exactly what to look out for and can dispel some sailing myths is Abdulla Ali Al Noon, Marina operations
“The concept of the Dubai Pre-Owned Boat Show is simple and it clearly caught the imagination as over 7,200 visitors enjoyed a weekend at Dubai Creek, admiring over 85 vessels with a total value exceeding AED 75 million last year. Once again the aim is to offer affordability and choice for yachting enthusiasts and complete new comers while having experts and retailers on hand to provide advice to those getting their seafaring legs in a really relaxed setting. After all it’s as much an enjoyable family day out as it is a boat show.” “It was always our intention to make it a one stop shop so literately everything you need to get out on the water is available. From the actual vessels, to finance and insurance through supplies and equipment from leading and renowned retailers, the Dubai Pre-Owned Boat Show has it all.”
First question you might ask is – can I afford it? A boat must surely be the next most expensive thing after my house –
right? Not necessarily. You can find a boat for less than your car – boats will be on sale at the Dubai Pre-Owned Boat Show for as little as AED 30,000. So deals to be had if you look at pre-owned boats, especially if you know what to look for.
The first step is to determine why you want it. Here are a couple of tips to help you do that:
Tip 1
Who will use the boat? Just family or will you invite friends? This may have a bearing on the size.
Tip 2
How will you use the boat? Will you be fishing, water skiing, cruising, taking day trips, weekend trips or weeklong excursions?
Tip 3
When and how often will the boat be used? Do you boat year-round or only seasonally?
Tip 4
What type of boat suits your personality and temperament? Do you imagine getting from place to place with great speed or leisurely sailing to your destination?
Tip 5
How much can you afford to spend? Don’t forget the initial cost of purchase is just the beginning. There will be maintenance, insurance, registration fees and instruction and safety course fees. Now that you’ve figured out why you want a boat and what you can afford, let’s look at how you can get the most value from a pre-owned boat:
Tip 6
With a pre-owned boat you can save on some of the costs associated with a brand new boat, such as safety equipment that is required to comply with local safety regulations.
Tip 7
Pre-owned boats that have been berthed and serviced regularly are an attractive option as they are generally in good condition.
Tip 8
Pre-owned boats are ready to go the moment you step on board, as they have already been out to sea.
Tip 9
Inspect the boat – there are three steps to this – checking documents, inspecting the boat and the test cruise.
Tip 10
If you’re looking to berth your boat in a marina, talk to the marinas in your area before buying your boat. This will give you a better idea of the costs involved and benefits. They can also provide you with some good buying advice, point you in the right direction for reputable dealerships, and would probably know of some great deals.
Now that you’re armed with these tips, it’s likely to be a fun-filled experience whether buying or just window shopping but be sure to talk to as many people as you can. There’s bound to be a boat that’s right for you, for just the right price.
Checking Documents
So you found a boat you’re interested in and are going to meet up with the owner. Below are a couple of things you need to check before getting on the boat.
Maintenance History – Check the boat’s maintenance history. If a lot of work has been put into the boat chances are there will be a lot more repairs to be made in the future.

Warranty – See if the boat is still under warranty – if it is then any costs under warranty will be covered by the dealership.
Hours – One of the first things you would check with a car is its mileage right? With a boat you look for its hours. If a boat has clocked more than 500 hours you can expect to pay for maintenance and upgrades. Likewise, if a boat has too few hours you should ask why.
Inspecting the boat
Propeller – Since this is probably the most expensive part of the boat, look out for warping, cracks and nicks. This can affect the boat’s performance.
Hull – Walk around the boat, tapping all the way around to make sure it is consistently solid. Also look out for mismatched paint, as this is a sign the boat has been in an accident.
Floor Rot – The telltale signs of floor rot are soft spots and mildew, so get on your knees so you can feel the soft spots and sniff out the mildew.
Upholstery – Look out for ripped seams and fading colours. These can be the result of storage conditions. Ask if there is a boat cover.
Vibration – While out at sea look out for vibrations which can mean a noisy boat –and a bent propeller.
Shifting – How does the boat feel when you shift gears? Is the transition smooth or jumpy?
Reverse – Make sure this works – this is important especially when docking. Response time – Steer the boat in direction to the other and see how quickly it takes the boat to respond.
Gauges and Instruments – Make sure these are all working – temperature, RPM, speedometer, etc.
Bilge – This is where the water accumulates in the boat. Check to see that the bilge is doing what it’s supposed to do. If the cruise isn’t long enough, feed some water into the engine hole until the bilge steps up.
Storage – Ask how the boat was stored. Was it outside exposed to the hot air and sun or was it protected in dry storage? This can seriously make the difference in a boat’s condition.
Trailer – See if the boat comes with a trailer, especially if you are going to store your boat on dry land. Make sure you check it thoroughly as trailers are not cheap.
On the boat
You wouldn’t buy a car without test driving it first would you? This is even more important with boats because they require more maintenance than a car. Below is a checklist of things to look out for while on the test cruise:
Take some friends – Since you’ll probably be with friends on your boat most of the time, bring them along. This way you can see how the boat performs with the added weight.
Planing – The boat should rise up on a plane when you take off, and shouldn’t feel like it’s dragging on the water.

Worry Free Boat Club is a specialist service enabling its members to enjoy all the benefits of boat ownership without the associated maintenance costs and inconvenience.
Worry Free Boat Club members have access to sports boats, day boats, cabin boats, fishing boats and jet skis in a range of sizes for members to choose from. The boats can cater for up to 12 people and can be booked in slots of morning or afternoon, or taken out for the full day. Jet skis can be reserved for two hours and up to three usages of the boats and jet skis can be booked in advance.
Members of Worry Free Boat Club pay an annual subscription fee of AED 30,000, which can be paid in up to four installments, and a one-time joining fee of AED 10,000. Members can then reserve one of the six boats that operate within Dubai. As part of the fees, members will also receive the training needed to obtain an international boat license, which is recognized worldwide.
Members can take the boats from the Dubai Creek Marina, Dubai Marina, or Palm Marina. The jet skis can be taken from Jumeirah Beach Residence.
