hat a wonderful long summer that was – for me anyway as I was in Europe for just over three months, and it was wonderful to be able to escape the heat and humidity of Dubai. Having spent many summers here over my thirty-three years in Dubai…and enjoyed every one of them…it was a big change. However, it’s back to a new season which promises to be a fun one with new Captains, Kamal Kosta and Mitsuko Emmerson, supported by their Vice-Captains, Johnny Aldridge and Helen Srivastava. There are a number of new golf events in store this season and there are also several interesting social events planned, which I am sure will be very enjoyable and successful.

Congratulations and thank you to outgoing Captains, Dick Purchase and Barbara Head who did a great job last season but I’m sure you’re now enjoying ‘your retirement’ from the Captaincy! So, the season ahead is full on with great golf events, fantastic social evenings, some of them for members only, so all it takes is for our members to throw themselves into everything that’s happening at our wonderful Club. We have a huge membership and on a golfing and social front it is the ’hub’ so come along, try it out, meet your fellow members and have fun! Craig and his team have been very busy all summer with course maintenance – read his report in this issue on what has been happening. The courses are looking great so please do you part by repairing pitch marks, filling in divots, raking bunkers etc., so everyone is able to enjoy the course at its best. In addition, please take care of your carts; there have been a few mishaps with carts throughout the summer so don’t find yourself in the embarrassing position of those in the photos below.

It is with great sadness that we wish to advise you that our member Mr Veeran Verma, passed away on the golf course on October 1st. Veeran had been a member at the Club for over seven years and prior to that was a member at Nad Al Sheba Club. He always enjoyed his regular rounds of golf with friends at the Club, and will be sadly missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife and family at this time.

Pro/Member Challenge

Competition Results

Saturday 20th September 2014

Although the elements were hot for the annual Pro/Member Challenge, some of the scores the members produced were even hotter! A fantastic day was had by all, as the members pitted their skills against the Club’s strong team of professionals during various on-course challenges such as Beat the Pro, Straightest Drive and the famous Tin Cup Challenge!

Mark, Andy, James and Matthew Baxter with the trophy

The fun Shamble format produced excellent performances from third placed team Suvansh Arora, Bradley Mogire, Clement Flaherty and Zubin Chandra, with a two from four net score of 121. This was bettered by runners-up Rajinder Razdan, Qamar Rasheed, Sekhar Vangimalla and Fredrik Schauman on an excellent 119. Although these scores were great they couldn’t match the amazing score of 114 and a five shot victory by team Baxter! It was a family affair consisting of father Andy and his three sons Matthew, Mark and James.

Spike Bar launches its new menus Dear Members, I am pleased to announce that we have recently launched a new menu in the Spike Bar. Throughout the new menu creation process we have taken information from our member surveys and feedback that has been received from both members and guests. The new menu in the Spike Bar offers a more relaxed style of food offerings, keeping the theme of an upscale pub or sports bar. Our objective is to provide a very tasty dining experience in a casual environment. Some new additions to the Spike Bar menu include a selection of burgers, a choice of sharing items and a “Flavours of Asia” section; in addition we have retained some of our most popular dishes. Changes to the M’s menu will follow later this month and will include some new Mediterranean items while still incorporating the Arabic influenced dishes from the previous menu. We have also made some changes to the pizza menu and added further main courses. Our team of Chefs has been working hard during the summer months, tasting, adjusting and practising the new menus. We are delighted with the results and hope you have the chance to experience them soon! Kind regards, Jeffrey Brothers Executive Sous Chef Emirates Golf Club

Lynne and Andy Whitelaw

Where are you from? Andy: I am from Cumbernauld, Scotland. Lynne: I was born and raised in Thurso in the far north of Scotland. Were you involved in any other sport before playing golf? Andy: I was very involved in Shotokan Karate and 5-a-side football. Lynne: I have always been involved in athletics, from competing as a Junior to coaching as an adult. What brought you to Dubai and when? Andy: The company I work for moved the Corporate office to Dubai. I moved here in July 2012. Lynne: After travelling with Andy for the past few years, I came to Dubai in October 2012. When did you take up golf? Andy: I started playing golf when I was 14 years old...sorry can’t remember how many years ago that was!! Lynne: I first played five years ago and then very little until I arrived in Dubai and joined Emirates Golf Club. What has been your lowest handicap and what is it now? Andy: My lowest handicap has been here at EGC. I now play off 9. Lynne: My handicap is at its lowest, now playing off 10.

What is your favourite course to play?

morning found us at the Golf Club filling in the paperwork to become members... nowhere to stay but we could play golf! The Club was my lifeline when I arrived as I knew nobody so I spent a lot of time there as Andy was still travelling. I still remember my first experience of the Club Anniversary party as we were lucky that our first year coincided with the Club’s 25th Anniversary celebrations; we were so fortunate to be a part of it all. What sort of work do you do? Andy: I’m a Scotsman, working in Dubai so it’s not hard to guess I’m in the oil and gas industry. Lynne: I am a very lucky lady not to be working, although I do work very hard at golf, Zumba and lunching...and of course spending Andy’s money! Do you have any other family?

When did you join EGC and what is your most memorable moment? Andy: We joined in July 2012 having just arrived in Dubai. My most memorable moment was my first ever round on the Majlis and finishing on the 18th with the magnificent backdrop of the Club and the Dubai skyline. Lynne: I flew into Dubai in July 2012 to look for somewhere to stay; the following

Andy & Lynne: We have three grown children; Leeanne is an archeologist working in Edinburgh. Kimberly has her own graphics company in Queenstown New Zealand. Keith, our youngest, is an armed policeman in Inverness. We also have four grandchildren, Chase 5, Rowan 4, Emma 3, Alasdair 1...and yes, to answer your questions, we started when we were 10!

Andy: My personal favourite is Valderrama, Spain. I was lucky to play straight after the very last Volvo Masters was played there. The condition of the course was amazing, making for a game of precision golf. Lynne: Gosh such a hard question. I love playing the Majlis as it’s an amazing course. I also love playing Reay Golf course, the most northerly course on the mainland UK. It’s not the longest course but it’s right on the beach and quite challenging; every hole is a different challenge with the wind swirling from the sea and interesting beautiful views. Your thoughts on the Club? Andy: Quite simply the very best club I have ever been involved with. The members are great and the staff are wonderful as they are always helpful and friendly. I have had so many memorable occasions at the Club already in my short time here and I consider it a pleasure and a privilege to be a member. Lynne: I am still relatively new to the Club and I use the facilities extensively. I feel privileged to be able to say that I am a member of Emirates Golf Club. I alway have a smile on my face when I drive in. It is great being part of a wonderful group of ladies.

11 Dear Members, We trust you have had a great summer and we welcome you back for the season ahead. The team in GCM has had a very busy summer which included our annual renovation works throughout the property. The core aeration has gone exceptionally well and recovery has been very good indeed. Both courses just now are playing well with greens surfaces as

consistent across the two courses as they have ever been. A significant change that you will notice is the implementation of new bunker sand on the Faldo Course. Aesthetically it is a big change as the sand is white which creates a great contrast. The sand however is still very soft and will take some time to firm up to what we would consider is acceptable. Raking out footprints has never been more important as they will be a lot more severe with the softer sand in play. We encourage you to please take your time to ensure this is done correctly so that all golfers can benefit during their rounds. There is nothing worse than having your ball finish

up in a deep footprint, so please do your best to assist. The GCM team is sending out additional colleagues to assist, but we are unable to do so 24/7.

r’s Greenkeepe Cuttings

Greenkeeper’s Cuttings

As mentioned, surfaces at the moment are good and as we move into late September and beyond this will only improve. The Majlis has just completed its final aerification of the season and greens surfaces will be 100% again within a week maximum. Wishing you a great golfing season ahead. T

he team at Fit Lab would like to welcome you all back after your summer vacation; we hope you had a fantastic break and that you are now ready and raring to go.

As always at Fit Lab we are looking at ways to give our members the best service possible and to keep you entertained at the Recreation Department. The Insider

16 THE INSIDER This month we give you an insight into the role of our Membership Services Manager,

Andrew Matthews

How long have you worked at EGC? I have been involved with the Club in various roles for five years now.

What roles have you had at EGC over those five years? When I moved here I took on the role of seasonal Golf Instructor with some Operations tasks also. I then took on the role of Night Golf Operations Executive and looked after all the night activities at the Club and became a night owl! In 2013 I was promoted to Membership Services Manager.

(Neuro-Linguistic Programming) and sports hypnosis. As a lot of things we do in life requires our mind to be ‘in the right place’, these forms of modelling and reprogramming psychology play a big part in helping a golfer fulfil his/her true potential without changing too much except their thoughts!

There is a rumour going around you have been using these NLP techniques to help you lose weight. Tell us more! Well, as I am writing this (18th September), I have lost a total of 23kgs, which is 3.8 stones in old money! I do have some secrets that I may share in the future!

Wow that’s great; do you have any quick tips for those of us who need some guidance? Well one thing I would say is that it all has a lot to do with the pictures in your mind and how you represent yourself in them. NLP can be used for so many things you want to improve. Golf is a great example of how the thoughts in your mind affect your performance.

will be having a members’ only quiz in M’s restaurant. The October evening will be Halloween themed, so wear your scariest costumes.....(I wear my scary mask every day). The culinary team, led by Chef Jeffrey, will be holding monthly cooking classes to share their secrets! Barney, once again, will be hosting some rules evenings, but this year with a twist! They will be staged in the Royal Majlis suite and also on the eighth green of the Majlis course for some live interactions. The world famous golf coach, Peter Cowen will be here in November and he will be doing a dinner and Q&A, so time to start thinking of those questions! I shall also be putting together a members’ trip to Almouj Golf Club in Oman and for those who have never been, this is a must! Plans are afoot too for another overseas trip, this time to fabulous Turkey. In addition we will be having some themed drink tasting and pairing events and end-of-season Members’ Ball. It is an exciting season ahead. On the golfing social front, we will be hosting the US Masters weekend events with a Members’ & Guests invitational event on the Faldo at night.

Will you be the Chief Marshal for the ODLM & ODDC events again this year?

BEFORE AFTER

When you were coaching you specialised in the mind game. Tell us some more about that As well as being a PGA advanced Golf Professional for over 20 years; I am also a qualified Master Practitioner of NLP

We have just received the new season’s events calendar and have noticed there is a new section for social events at the Club. This is a welcome new addition. Can you highlight what is happening? Yes, I have put together, with my colleagues, some social events for members only. I felt that it would be good to have some events that are not just golf-focused at the Club. Each month we

Yes I will and I feel very proud to take this task on each year. We have over 400 volunteers sign up between the two events. There is a huge amount of administration and emails involved but it is all worth it when it comes together on the week of the events. So many new friendships are made and people come from all over the world to give up their time for these fabulous tournaments. I also have a fantastic team behind me who put in a lot of time and effort to ensure it is a success from our operational side. The volunteer sign-up is now live for the Omega Dubai Ladies Masters and I would love to see as many of you as possible. Those interested should visit www. golfindubai.org

Sounds great. Do you have any other information to share? Yes, I would like everyone to know that my door is literally always open, so if you would like a chat about anything please come and see me or email me on amatthews@dubaigolf.com Have a truly great season and remember, your next game could be your greatest, so enjoy the journey!

The Faldo course bunker sand has been changed. We received a number of complaints regarding hard bunkers last season and this new sand will improve the course aesthetically also. However, please note it will need time to bed in and you may experience more plugged lies to start with. Repair of Divots, Ball-Marks and Damage by Shoes Players should carefully repair any divot holes made by them and any damage to the putting green made by the impact of a ball (whether or not made by the player himself). On completion of the hole by all players in the group, damage to the putting green caused by golf shoes should be repaired. Tee it Forward By choosing the most appropriate tees you can enhance the enjoyment of your round! If you are struggling from one set of tees (e.g. blue) - unable to reach par-3 holes from the tee, or unable to reach par-4 holes in two shots - then move up to an easier (shorter) set of tees (white). One thing to keep in mind is that many amateur golfers (especially men) try to play from tees that are too long. There’s no shame in playing from a forward set of tees if that is appropriate for your game. Golfers who play from tees that are too long for their games are only slowing down the pace of play. Majlis Starter Hut The old Majlis starter hut has been removed due to poor condition. The Starter will now be based in the white ‘F&B hut’. Golfers will be redirected to the ‘Starter and F&B Hut’ by the new path. There were plans to build a brand new starter hut but it made sense and was more cost effective to utilise the current building. Thank you for your patience during this maintenance; we expect the work to be completed by the 25th September. Caddy Fee With the walking season around the corner please note the minimum caddy fee will be increased to AED 120 for members and members’ guests.

Ryder Cup

EGC MEMBERS, LIFE MEMBERS AND PAST MEMBERS SPOTTED AT GLENEAGLES

I

am writing this the day after the Ryder Cup. What a superb few days of golf at Gleneagles! I know many people say they would prefer to watch it on TV but nothing compares with being there, soaking up the excitement and the fantastic atmosphere. Equipped with Ryder Cup radios with continuous live commentary on all the matches and positioning yourself on the course with huge TV screens showing all the action, it is very easy to see a lot of golf, particularly at a course like Gleneagles where it’s very hilly. This is my third Ryder Cup in Europe, having been at the K Club in Ireland, Celtic Manor in Wales and Gleneagles in Scotland and all three have been amazing - we even had glorious weather for this one!! What a superb European team, led by an awesome Captain and assisted by some equally awesome Vice-Captains. There was some spectacular golf played by both teams but perhaps the Europeans’ team spirit gave them the advantage.

SUPPORTERS

The US Rookies were the top scorers for US and Reed and Spieth became the youngest pairing ever in US history. European supporters

Stenson and Rose’s 3 & 2 win over Bubba Watson and Matt Kucher could possibly be one of the best matches in Ryder Cup history. There was a total of 21 birdies over 16 holes with the European pair reeling off 10 consecutive birdies from the seventh hole onwards!

Final Day Highlights

R

ory McIlroy secured the first point with a 5 & 4 win against Rickie Fowler; Rory fired off seven birdies and an eagle to blitz to victory.

21 Ryder Cup

Europe celebrated their eighth win in the last ten Ryder Cups with a convincing 16½ - 11½ win over USA. There were many highlights during the three days and fantastic debuts by American and European rookies, namely Jimmy Walker, Patrick Reed, Jordan Spieth, Victor Dubuisson and Jamie Donaldson.

Then fellow Northern Irishman Graeme McDowell came back from three down to beat Jordan Spieth 2 & 1 having had five birdies over the six holes completing his win at the 17th. Martin Kaymer chipped in on the 16th to defeat Bubba Watson 4 & 2 and Justin Rose fought back from four down against Hunter Mahan to halve the match on the last hole.

The Minnesota Vikings

Jamie Donaldson, playing in the 10th match, secured the win against Keegan Bradley with a stunning approach to the 15th green to spark scenes of euphoria.

THE PLAYERS

After Donaldson had ensured Europe’s win, Sergio Garcia beat Jim Furyk one up, Ian Poulter halved with Webb Simpson, Lee Westwood lost 3 & 2 to Jimmy Walker and Victor Dubuisson halved with Zach Johnson. US Captain Tom Watson was seeking redemption for Medinah two years ago when Europe came back from 10-6 down to win 14½ - 13½ on the final day, but his side were unable to create their own sensation in Scotland.

European Team Rory McIlroy

“ I was more up for today than I was for the two final days of the majors I won this year. I was up for it.”

Jamie Donaldson

or Dubuisson

There were some amazing shots made by the Europeans and the Americans alike but two of the highlights have to be Donaldson’s wedge to within six inches of the hole on the 15th which sealed the victory for Europe and Kuchar’s eagle on the eighth hole in the singles match against Thomas Bjorn when he hit a shot into the green that pitched and trickled into the hole. Paul McGinley has a perfect Ryder Cup record, winning three times as a player (2002, 2004, 2006), twice as a vice-captain (2010, 2012) and once as captain 2014).

ed up and I’m telling you, he is star!”

“As much as I’ve enjoyed being Captain, it’s been a real honour and a real privilege to represent these guys and do a job for us and for them that was going to win the trophy” American Team

McGinley said: “I’m very proud of every one of these players. I couldn’t have asked for an ounce more from them. I’ve been involved in so many Ryder Cups and seen mistakes we’ve made. “I’ve changed things a bit and bringing in the fifth vice-captain has been a factor in helping to prepare the guys, especially in the afternoon sessions” A great story that was aired by the Golf Channel was that three of Paul McGinley’s roommates from his College days in San Diego, Tom Seaverson, John Adams and Craig Ballard, who were also teammates on the US International University Golf team 1989-90, arranged their trip to Gleneagles to support McGinley as soon as they heard he was going to be Captain what great friends!
