CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT Inspiring character. Creating opportunity. Building more than results.

At Dubai College, we believe that education is about far more than academic achievement. Some of the most important lessons are learned beyond the classroom, on a sports field, on a stage, whilst serving others, leading a team, solving a problem, or simply having the courage to try something new. Our Character Development Activities (CDA) programme provides every student with opportunities to discover passions, develop talents and, most importantly, grow as a person. Through sport, music, drama, academic societies, leadership programmes, service initiatives, philanthropy, entrepreneurship and countless other experiences, students are encouraged to step beyond their comfort zone and embrace challenge with curiosity, commitment and confidence. At the heart of the programme is our belief that character is built through action. Every rehearsal, training session, competition, meeting, performance, fundraiser, mentoring opportunity or act of service contributes to the qualities that will serve our students throughout their lives: resilience, kindness, integrity, teamwork, leadership and compassion. A distinctive feature of life at Dubai College is our commitment to service and philanthropy. We encourage students not only to pursue personal excellence but also to consider how they can make a positive difference to others. Through our partnerships, charitable initiatives and student-led projects, young people learn that meaningful change often begins with small actions, the "teaspoons of change" that, when combined, can have a transformative impact on individuals, communities and causes. The remarkable breadth of opportunities within this brochure reflects the vibrant spirit of our school and ensures that every student can find a pathway that inspires them. Whether representing the College internationally, performing on stage, leading a campaign, mentoring a younger student, supporting a charitable cause or exploring a brand-new interest, there is something here for everyone. We hope this brochure inspires every student to get involved, embrace opportunity, serve others, discover new strengths and create a character development journey that is uniquely their own. After all, whilst achievements may open doors, it is character that determines what we do once we walk through them. Tony Piper, Deputy Head: Character

SPORT

Hydration and equipment It will now be mandatory for all students to bring a full water bottle with them to all activities in order to stay hydrated for the duration of their session. All activities will only allow students to participate if they bring a bottle to the activity. We also strongly encourage all students to wear sunscreen and caps are also welcome for the vast majority of activities. For sports activities on the field, students will need to wear football boots in order to have sufficient grip to be safe whilst competing. Shin pads will be necessary for all football activities, whilst a mouth guard will also be essential for both rugby training and matches. Sports kit Students should wear DC branded kit to all CDA Sports sessions. We would like to remind parents to ensure that all PE kit is labelled with their child’s name so that it can be identified if misplaced. All lost items will be placed in Lost Property boxes, which are located outside the pavilion and SPACE building. In order to avoid additional costs for parents, for the majority of sports, we will be providing students with playing jerseys to represent the College. It is therefore essential that the kit is returned at the end of every match to the member of staff so that it can be washed and prepared for other squads to use. Absence from training sessions Once students sign up for an activity, it becomes an expected commitment that they attend all training sessions and fixtures throughout the season. If students are unable to attend due to an unforeseen circumstance or illness, it is an expectation that they contact their coach in order to be excused. We believe that this etiquette will help build positive relationships between squad members and will assist coaches to accurately plan their sessions. Code of Conduct We place a high emphasis on sportsmanship at Dubai College and believe good behaviour and positive attitudes are key attributes gained from participating in sporting activities. We therefore ask all parents and students to read the DASSA Code of Conduct, which is a pre-requisite to participate in all fixtures arranged via the association itself. Please take the time to read the DASSA Code of Conduct. BASKETBALL Basketball is a major team sport at DC, with exceptionally high participation levels across both boys’ and girls’ programmes. Our Under 16 and Under 19 squads compete in the DASSA leagues during Term 1, alongside a range of competitive domestic fixtures that provide valuable match experience and challenge players at all levels. The senior programme is further enhanced by international touring opportunities, with our senior squads regularly travelling to compete against high-quality opposition and broaden their playing experience. Our younger Under 12 and 14 squads broaden their skills throughout Term 2, prior to competing in the DASSA leagues throughout Term 3. The programme offers an exciting balance of participation, development, and elite opportunity, enabling every student to engage meaningfully while striving for excellence at every level. Basketball has firmly established itself as one of the College’s leading participation sports. As students progress through the school, they benefit from a structured performance pathway that includes multiple weekly training sessions and dedicated strength and conditioning support. This ensures that players are continually developing their technical skills, tactical understanding, and physical performance within a high-performance environment.

At Under 12 and Under 13 level, students participate in a frequent programme of T20 cricket against local schools and clubs. The Under 15 programme builds upon these foundations, with players competing in both T20 and longerformat matches. They also benefit from participation in the highly competitive DASSA Hardball League, where they face some of the strongest school opposition in Dubai. They trained and worked towards competing in the DASSA competition and perform in the annual DC Showcase. The CDA is open to all year groups, and we encourage everyone to get involved. This is a paid activity, please email nina.bland@dubaicollege.org to sign up or for more information.

DC Dance Club DC Dance Club continues to grow each year, providing students with a range of exciting opportunities to develop their skills, confidence and passion for dance. In Term One, students can audition to be part of the RUGBY - GIRLS annual Dubai Desert Dance event. This is always a popular event, with many students participating each year, and the standard of the final performance is consistently exceptional. In Term Two, students can take part in the DC Showcase. Dancers from all year groups are encouraged to perform, and all choreography is created by the students themselves. Performers range from beginners to advanced dancers and showcase a variety of styles through solo, duet and group performances. Term Three focuses on preparations for BSME Dance. Due to the highly competitive nature of this event, a limited number of dancers are selected to represent the school. Students work hard to develop their performance skills and prepare for this exciting opportunity.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS A Dubai College Education: More Than the Classroom At Dubai College, we believe that education is about more than academic success. What students achieve matters - but who they become matters more. Character is not built in isolated moments. It develops over time through everyday choices: in lessons, in friendships, and in the wider experiences that shape a young person’s journey. That is why Character Development Activities (CDAs) sit at the heart of life at Dubai College. They are not an “extra”. They are a core part of our provision—designed to give every student the opportunity to live out our values of Excellence, Hard Work, Kindness and Integrity in meaningful, practical ways. Through CDAs, students build confidence, resilience and responsibility. They learn to collaborate, to lead, and to contribute to something beyond themselves. In short: CDAs are where character is practised, not just talked about.

A Programme with Purpose: Doing Less, Better As a school, we have made a deliberate choice. Rather than offering a wide but diluted range of activities, we focus on fewer, high-quality experiences that are carefully designed and consistently delivered.

This means: Every activity has a clear purpose Students understand what they are working towards Expectations are high and consistent Experiences feel engaging, meaningful and worthwhile Our aim is simple:

Every student should feel that their time in CDAs is time well spent. A Character Development Activity (CDA) is a planned, regular activity led by our staff, designed to develop students beyond the classroom. These sessions form part of every student’s weekly experience at Dubai College and are a key part of how we support their personal growth. Alongside these structured activities, students may also access additional opportunities such as: academic support sessions physical conditioning and wellbeing activities drop-in enrichment opportunities We also provide supervised social spaces during the day, recognising that connection, belonging and wellbeing are essential to a student’s development. At its core, every CDA is designed with one principle in mind: it should develop something in the student - it should never simply fill time.

Taking part in Character Development Activities

WHAT IS A CDA? A Broad and Balanced Offer To ensure clarity and breadth, all CDAs sit within four key areas:

Sport

Creative

Sport plays a central role in school life. It helps students develop teamwork, resilience and discipline, while offering opportunities for both participation and performance.

Music, drama and the arts allow students to express themselves, collaborate creatively, and build confidence through shared experiences.

Academic & Enrichment

Curiosity & Social

These activities extend learning beyond the classroom, supporting academic ambition, curiosity and independent thinking.

This area provides space to explore new interests, develop friendships, and take part in student-led initiatives that build a strong sense of belonging.

A Thread That Runs Through Everything: Service Running through the entire programme is a focus on service and contribution. We want students to understand that their actions matter, that they can make a difference, whether locally, regionally or globally. Through this, students begin to see themselves not just as participants, but as contributors and leaders. They come to understand a simple but powerful idea: small actions, done consistently, can have real impact.

The Student Experience

Accessible

With opportunities for all to take part.

Challenging

Encouraging students to step beyond their comfort zones.

Meaningful

With a clear sense of purpose and achievement.

Balanced

Supporting both academic and personal growth.

Above all, we want students to leave Dubai College with a strong sense of who they are and what they can contribute.

Taking part in Character Development Activities

HOW CDAs WORK Character Development

How the Programme Works The CDA programme runs throughout the school year, with activities beginning early in each term. Students take part in a combination of: before-school activities lunchtime sessions after-school programmes This flexible structure allows students to engage in a wide range of opportunities alongside their academic commitments. Where activities take place off-site or extend beyond the school day, all appropriate safeguarding and organisational procedures are in place. A limited late bus service is also available from DC to support participation in after school CDAs. Parents will arrange collection from the off site venue themselves. Logistics / Timings of Activities Unless otherwise stipulated, CDAs will begin in Week 2 of Term 1, and in Week 1 of Terms 2 and 3.

After-school CDAs (Monday – Thursday) will start at 15:45 and finish at the latest 16:45. Some activities may extend beyond this or take place off-site. After-school CDAs (Friday) On Friday CDAs will start at 11:45 and finish at 12:45 Some activities may extend beyond this or take place off-site. Off site CDAs will have varying start and end times and students / parents should refer to schedule on SOCS.

The Bigger Picture At its best, the CDA programme brings together everything we value as a school. It ensures that: our values are experienced, not just spoken about opportunities are designed with intention students experience depth, not fragmentation Ultimately, CDAs help create a culture where character is built every day, through small actions, repeated consistently, and carried out with purpose.

Final Thought Before School CDAs (Monday – Friday) Sport will start at 06:30 & finish at the latest 07:25. This allows all students to change if required & get to their first lesson by 07:40 for a start at 07:45. Lunchtime CDAs (Monday – Thursday) Sport will start at 12:00 & finish at the latest 12:35. Non Sport will start at 12:10 and finish at 12:45 This allows all students sufficient time to eat, take part in their CDA and arrive at tutor time on time.

At Dubai College, we are proud of what our students achieve. But we are even prouder of who they become. Character Development Activities play a central role in that journey - helping every student to grow into a confident, capable and compassionate individual, ready to make a positive difference in the world.
