this Farm Town The site consists of approximately one block of former residential land and parking in Germantown, Philadelphia. The site was chosen using data obtained from the Philadelphia Health Department looking at areas with high low income and low access to fresh food. The the crux of Germantown Avenue, Tulpehocken Street and Pastorius Street was a location that fit this description and provided an opportunity for an architectural solution. Germantown Avenue is also a predominantly commercial street, straddled by a residential neighborhood.

Primary Program: - Vertical Farms - Auxillary Space for the Farm - Mechanical Space - Storage Space - Distribution Space - Mercantile Ground Floor - Single Family Apartments - Live Work Apartments - Shared Spaces

The site grade drops over 20 feet from Germantown Avenue to the constructed wetlands. There exists an oppourtunity to utilize this drop in grade change the access points of residential and commercial programs.

When looking at who lives in Germantown, specifically around my site, I want to consider how the Home fits into my thesis. The sense of Home comes not only from the literal home provided in this design, but also from the people that inhabit this building.

In addtiton to master growers that would live in this facility, families would live hear fostering new generations of the Germantown Community

Thesis Philosophy Architecture in modern society should not only enhance our communities through experience and place, but also provide a service to the public by enhancing the utility of the building through design.

The existing culture of this area may not need a new driver for community so much as it needs a building that provides a service and experience that helps the existing community thrive and helps people live healthily in an evolving world. Architecture should benefit the community rather than the self. This Vertical Farm, Market and Internal Community should integrate into Germantown considerately, create an educational environment in the realm of agriculture, create a desirable work environment for those who use the facility, support an efficient business model for urban farming and strive for energy efficiency. The successful vertical farm community design should provide an architectural solution to the public health dilemma of the food desert while maintaining an involved community and environmental stewardship.

•Thesis questions: may not need to have an answer to every single question. Ambiguity/Abstraction •Try to understand the site capacity some more.

•Form seems to be domineering the Settlement School.

•Consider the use of the farm and market as a modular. (Myself: note that the system can be broken down) •Consider the other part of your site. There must be a reason for why you lofted your site.

•Strengthen your original concept with Maslow’s Hierarchy.

•Look at the Netherlands and how they integrate urban farming.

•Desire for community and educational needs?

•Keep this project about people, keep it about joy and community.
