A YEAR OF NEW ENERGY POLICIES 2018 turned out to be an eventful year for PowerLabDK. The platform has undergone major organizational changes during this year, which includes both a widening of professional competences and as well as overall structural changes.

The Chairman of the PowerLabDK steering committee through six years, Preben Jørgensen, resigned his position and handed over the presidency to the former vice chair, Jørgen S. Christensen, who has been part of the committee since PowerLabDK first launched in 2012.

PowerLabDK has evolved from consisting of several individual facilities to becoming a joint technical platform for developing, testing and demonstrating sustainable electric power and energy solutions.

Next step will be to further promote Bornholm as such a regulatory free zone for smart energy. We believe that the establishment of Bornholm as a national test zone will accelerate the development of a smarter energy system - and thus a more efficient green transition of Denmark with international export potential.

A keen focus this year has been to sharpen the overall strategy of the PowerLabDK platform. A thorough analysis of the platform’s framework conditions, stakeholder relations and growing trends has begun, which will lead to a new strategy.

PowerLabDK had 45 visiting parties in 2018 of which 25 were national and international delegations. Four new research projects were funded in collaboration with external partners.

We are very proud of this progress, which we believe will further strengthen the PowerLabDK brand in the future, by providing the needed structure for a cohesive highly professional organization.

Among significant events of the year, we can mention that our efforts regarding the governmental energy agreement has payed off and the request for national regulatory free zones are now mentioned in the official agreement.

RESEARCH PowerLabDK enters national and international research projects to advance the Danish energy system and to increase the growth and competitiveness of Danish companies. These projects are often an accelerator for new collaborations with companies and authorities, as well as a channel for small and medium-sized businesses to be in dialogue with the university environment.

In 2018, PowerLabDK was involved in 11 research projects all in collaboration with industry and preformed a total of 54 test setups .

In 2018, PowerLabDK experienced a significant increase in the demand for solutions and competences within digitization, such as artificial intelligence, asset management and big data. A number of innovative projects with funding from the Innovation Fund, the Energy Technology Development and Demonstration Program (EUDP) etc. along with great industrial endorsement has ensured that PowerLabDK is able to fulfill this important task.

NEW INVESTMENTS As part of the EnergyLab Nordhavn project, a real-time data warehouse has been developed. The data management system is called EnergyDataDK and will collect energy data from the project. It is the intension that the system will be further developed to include continuous energy data from other living labs like GreenLab Skive, DOLL, Bornholm, SYSLAB as well as energy data from Smart Campus DTU. In december 2018, it was confirmed from EUDP that PowerLabDK would recieve funding to build a new digital infrastructure called: Digital Energy Lab. The project has a total budget of 29 million DKK. It is the goal that EnergyDataDK, through the newly launched Digital Energy Lab, will be a necessary and requested hub for exchange of real-time data, use of computational power and provision of data in anonymous form for the use of a future cost-effective energy sector with a high level of integration and flexibility.

In the year to come, PowerLabDK will continue to focus on increasing and upgrading the platform’s software skills as we anticipate the level of digitalization will expand fast within the next two years. Digitalization and energy data management is one of PowerLabDK’s positions of strength, and we are determined to keep it as such.

The Energy System Integration Lab, also called SYSLAB, at Risø is one of the PowerLabDK facilities that is highly requested, and used in a large amount of research projects.

In 2018, SYSLAB began a modernization process to expand to a more comprehensive multi-energy system that will be able to test electricity, heat and gas in a distributed system with wind turbines, solar panels, EVs and buildings, etc.

The expansion is funded by Unilab funds (public funds for the development of state university buildings) and holds an investment of more than 39 million DKK.

RESEARCH-BASED CONSULTANCY PowerLabDK provides research-based consultancy for industrial clients and state owned enterprises. The consultancy services include risk assessment, test of system units, optimization of grid components etc.

PowerLabDK has been included in 22 projects with about 6,2 man-years.

Case: Testing of water electrolyzer for the European market A 35kW Proton Exchange Membrane Water Electrolyzer owned and manufactured by the English company ITM Power is being tested at DTU Elektro’s laboratory PowerLabDK. The activity is supported by the EU QualyGridS project (2016-2019) and aims at developing and validating standardized test protocols, paving the way for Water Electrolyzers to offer electricity grid services to power system operators in Europe.

PowerLabDK was asked to do the tests due to its specialized staff and unique facilities.

PowerLabDK is also part of the fairly new partnership, REPLI, which stands for ‘DTU Renewable Energy Policy, Planning, and Integration Advice Group’.

This partnership is a single point of contact for all external customers and collaborators who wants insight into DTU’s knowledge, experience and development in renewable energy, as well as the use of experimental facilities.

EDUCATION As part of the collaboration with DTU, PowerLabDK has been an active partner in the development of a new bachelor’s degree named Sustainable Energy Design. The study has it’s roots in solid technological groundwork and has a strong focus on innovation, entrepreneurship and societal impact.

An energy system with 100% renewable energy calls for a new energy reality and demands innovative solutions.

PowerLabDK is determined to assist in producing engineers who are able to think creative and develop solutions that are both financial and environmental sustainable.

A large part of the education will take place in the PowerLabDK facilities, which will insure a more experimental and innovative learning platform for the students.

STUDENT INNOVATION

One of PowerLabDK’s high valued objectives is to assist DTU and Center for Electric Power and Energy in training and educating strong new candidates for the industry. PowerLabDK therefore assists in a number of different student projects utilizing the potential of the facilities.

PowerLabDK supports student innovation by contributing to projects like EVenture, which is a student driven development of an electric racing car. Roughly, sixty students are affiliated in the project, each contributing with different skill sets within mechanical, electrical, software and management engineering. The DTU team is called Vermilion Racing and their race car will run at Silverstone UK, competing against fifteen other EV teams from across the world.

VISITORS PowerLabDK gained a large amount of national and international awareness in 2018. This is shown by the worldwide interest of PowerLabDK in visitors and presentations of the facilities.

In 2018, PowerLabDK had a total number of 46 visiting parties in our labs located in Risø and Lyngby. This amounts to an average of four visiting parties per month, which makes us one of the most popular locations at DTU. In order to accommodate the amount of visitors, we have created a minor communication and dissemination education for selected affiliated PhD’s, who are chosen to represent PowerLabDK and Center for Electric Power and Energy to key stakeholders.

Our visitors range on a broad scale from foreign universities to national and international ambassadors and ministers. The most requested facilities are High Voltage Lab, Control Center Lab, Energy System Integration Lab and Electrical Vehicle Lab.

MEDIA COVERAGE PowerLabDK experiences voluminous exposure through research projects in particular, where an effort has been made to emphasize the use of PowerLabDK in technology development, testing and demonstrations conducted in these projects.

Looking at media appearances, PowerLabDK and the Center for Electric Power and Energy research areas has a steady average of 15 mentionings per month, including both project-related and direct mentions.

The top peaks in media coverage rests on the topic of establishing Bornholm as a national test zone for smart energy and the dissemination of our world-leading vehicle-to-grid research project, Parker.
