In connection with the creation of the center, Stig Helveg will shift to a professorship at DTU Physics.

Professor Jesper Mørk from DTU Fotonik receives up to DKK 62.5 million to establish the Center for Nanophotonics (NanoPhoton), which will investigate the interaction between light and semiconductor nanostructures.

DTU Elektro’s team of researchers and students in Automation and Control have been qualified for the international competition MBZIRC - Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotic Challenge. MBZIRC takes place in Abu Dhabi (UAE) in February 2020, and is organized by Khalifa University. At the event the Danish team will battle against teams from all over the world.

In 2017, the team from DTU Elektro participated in MBZIRC and at that time secured a silver medal in one of the competition’s challenges.

Pitch winner A joint effort by Franz Heuchel, Diego Nozal and Efrén Fernandez Grande, from our Acoustic Technology group has won this year’s Danish Sound pitch battle. Franz presented his and Diego’s paper ‘Sound Field Control for Outdoor Concerts’ and both were especially thankful to Efrén for all his help in preparing the presentation.

Young researchers based in Danish universities are annually invited to join the Danish Research Talent Pitch Battle at Danish Sound Day to present their research to leading industry representatives, investors, researchers and organisations from the Danish Sound ecosystem.

exterior walls. The aged grey metal plates from the late 1960s have been discarded and replaced with 150 mm insulation material, a fiber-cement plate, and new black metal plates on the outside.

Furthermore, all old doors and windows have been renewed, and a lightning protection system has been installed on the roof. The insulation will facilitate a more stable temperature for the experiments in the laboratories using less energy, and the lightning protection system will ensure that critical experiments are not interrupted by power failures due to lightning.

With this 2019 exterior renovation and the 2017/18 building infrastructure upgrade, DTU Elektro now has a high-quality building 353 ready for the next 50 years of advanced antenna measurements.

HCØ2020 In 2020 Denmark celebrates the 200th anniversary of H.C. Ørsted’s discovery of electromagnetism. HCØ2020 is a national dissemination initiative targeted at children, young people and adults. The project is being implemented by DTU in collaboration with Astra (the national science center), the Experimentarium, the Danish Universities and the Society of Sciences covering the three focus areas of the project: Education, Culture and Science.

EuCAP 2020 attracts a record high number of papers Our Electromagnetic Systems group is organizing the 14th European Conference on Antennas and Propagation (EuCAP) to take place 15-20 March, 2020 in Bella Center, Copenhagen. By the submission deadline on October 18th, 2019 a record high number of 1550+ scientific papers had been received; this exceeds the previous record of EuCAP 2018 in London by more than 15%.

C40 delegation visits EnergyLab Nordhavn As part of the official C40 Cities’ activities in Copenhagen in October 2019 a delegation visited Nordhavn. More than 50 people from all over the world met up in Nordhavn where they were given a guided tour and presentation of the many demonstrations. Goodbye to Kristian Stubkjær On 26 November our department, other colleagues from DTU and external guest, friends and family took part in – now former department head – Kristian Stubkjær’s farewell reception. Over 200 people attended the reception with speeches given by DTU president Anders Bjarklev, Kristian himself, and Jacob Østergaard - representing the Leaders’ group at Elektro - among others. The speeches even included two light bulb jokes – which is a habit of Kristian’s.

Kristian has been head of our department since 2008, and has been employed at DTU for a total of 39 years in a number of different positions.

In a thank you email after the reception Kristian wrote: “Dear colleagues, I was happy that many of you had time to attend my farewell reception last Tuesday. Also thank you for the oversized greeting card that had so many signatures as well as the Kay Bojesen elephant from the department. I will take well care of the elephant as a very good memory of the many good years at DTU Elektro.

Thank you for the tremendous effort that has resulted in the strong standing of the department.

All the best wishes for success in the future.”

They are working on data-driven models and adversarial networks for acoustic bandwidth extension.

Javier Fernandez Alvarez has joined our Electromagnetic Systems group as a PhD student on 1 November 2019. Javier’s project ‘Probe-corrected phaseless near-field antenna measurements’ is supervised by Olav Breinbjerg and is co-funded by a DTU scholarship.
