DTU Lecturer of the Year

At DTU’s annual Commemoration Party on 3 May 2019 the DTU student’s union Polyteknisk Forening appointed Cheol-Ho Jeong to the Lecturer of the Year. Cheol-Ho receives the prestigious award for his excellent teaching in the MSc courses Architectural acoustics (31240) and Building acoustics (31241). The courses are part of MSc programme in Engineering Acoustics, and are given by our Acoustic Technology group.

Professor Robert Madsen from DTU Chemistry also received the award.

For the students, Cheol-Ho’s lectures are inspiring and have room for humor. He also manages to deliver the subject in a very interesting way. Some of his students are even choosing him to be the best teacher they ever had.

The project will conclude in the autumn of 2019. The final results and recommendations will be presented at a conference in Copenhagen at the beginning of October.

EnergyLab Nordhavn won Danish Design Award 2019 EnergyLab Nordhavn is a visionary concept—not a physical object you would automatically consider for a design award. Nevertheless, the project won the Danish Design Award 2019 in the category ‘Visionary Concepts’.

The project is centred around a collaboration between researchers and Danish energy companies with the aim of developing and demonstrating solutions for a flexible and intelligent energy system of the future. And the designers KIRT X THOMSEN have managed to visualize many of the innovative solutions that would otherwise be hidden away in attics, on walls, and in basements.

“EnergyLab Nordhavn has design relevance because design is also about cooperation and creating synergies in order to achieve a common goal. The end result is not directly visible, but a design approach is crucial in this project. A radical collaborative effort is necessary if we are to ensure

Disconnected power cable to Bornholm offers unique test option The island of Bornholm is on its own these days (beginning of May) in terms of electricity supply, as the submarine cable to Sweden’s power grid has been disconnected. This

DTU is one of the 27 partners in a new large-scale European project. As responsible for one of the three demo islands (Bornholm) DTU will test a new storage technology that exploits the features of grid integrated electric vehicles and demonstrate the possibility of providing flexibility to the electrical grid.

At the bottom of the sea between Hasle and Borreby lies a gigantic submarine cable. It normally connects Bornholm’s electricity system to the Swedish power grid and the rest of the Nordic electricity system. But Tuesday, 7 May at 7 a.m., the submarine cable was disconnected at both ends.

“The reason for this is that the Swedish electricity company E.ON is renovating its plant in Borreby. Therefore, they have to shut down the supply, so they can work safely,” says Carsten Rasmussen, who is responsible for coordinating the disconnection at Energinet, which is the owner of the cable.

The public utility company Bornholms Energi & Forsyning (BEOF) has prepared for the disconnection, among other things by initially asking all the island’s solar plant and wind turbine owners to stop their generation. This is because the current layout of the power grid means that it is unable to handle highly fluctuating energy volumes. If there is a shortage of electricity in the power grid, or if too much electricity is fed into the grid, it becomes unstable and short-circuits. The consequences would be that darkness will fall over the streets of Bornholm.

Professor Ian A. Hiskens from University of Michigan, USA, gave a lecture on ‘Nonlinear dynamics of aggregate load models’ and Associate Professor Anthony Papavasiliou from Université catholique de Louvain, Belgium, gave a lecture on ‘Impacts of Transmission Switching on Zonal Markets’.

International Collaboration’ the Danish Intelligent Energy Alliance (iEnergi) and our CEE group hosted a workshop entitled ‘Flexibility is the cornerstone of the future energy system’ on 20 June. Danish and international stakeholders with activities within energy flexibility and demand response (business, research, authorities, financial institutions, etc.) took part in the workshop.

Moto tiles in Finnish End of April Playware’s Moto Tiles appeared in the news of national TV in Finland (YLE). The topic of the feature was ‘Technique for Aid for the Rehabilitation of the Elderly‘.

The Moto Tiles were described as an aid to help depressed cancer patients regain their desire for life and give seniors better sleep quality. Seniors tested the tiles for half a year with good results.
