Editorial International Day against Drug Abuse

O

n Sunday, June 26, 2016, the world will be marking the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking.

The day was set aside by the United Nations to sensitise the public on the dangers posed by substance abuse.

The theme for this year’s commemoration is ‘Listen First’. It admonishes parents to listen more and seek help for children before and when they are hooked on hard drugs. According to United Nations report, the value of illegal drugs traded around the world is put at more than $322 billion yearly.

Definitely, drug abuse and trafficking is a problem and major deterrent to humanity and the well-being of the youth in particular, even as it poses greater problems to the socio-economic and political stability of any nation.

To underline the problem, the United Nations Secretary General, Ban Kimoon, described substance abuse and the illicit trafficking of drugs as an evil in any society. Incidentally, substance abuse often includes problems with impulse control and impulsive behaviour.

Furthermore, there are cases in which criminal or anti-social behaviour occurs when the person is under the influence of a drug. Statistics reveal that there are more than 120 million users of hard drugs such as cocaine, heroin, and other synthetic drugs.

There is no denying the fact that drug abuse and the illicit trafficking of substances is a worldwide malaise that has far-reaching consequences because of its direct and indirect relations to crime, corruption and international terrorism. The strong nexus between the traffickers, terrorist organisations and the money launderers, have allowed this monster to become a magnet for luring people to engage in crimes and mayhem.

In Nigeria, evidence reveals that many youths are becoming drug ad-

dicts. Before now, the country used to be a transit point but recently it has assumed the position and destination for hard and illicit drugs. With a population of some 170 million people, Nigeria has become a thriving market for the consumption of illicit drugs.

Due to new technologies, which have improved the mass production of some of these drugs, many of them have become very cheap and therefore affordable.

There is no denying that substance abuse and the new trend is becoming a significant medical, psychological, social and economic problem facing the country. More worrisome is the increasing number of secondary school and tertiary institution students taken to consuming hard drugs. Other groups of abusers are drivers, conductors, civil servants and artistes.

The consequences have been extreme violence, gang rape, drug induced suicide, paranoia, poor academic performance, school dropout, poor health condition and indebtedness. It also bears repeating that drug abuse is associated with anti-social vices such as cultism, thuggery, racketeering, and armed robbery.

We are therefore calling on the authorities to take appropriate steps in combating the epidemic of hard drug abuse among Nigerians, especially youths. However, this requires the keen involvement of parents in the educational progress of their children through effective collaboration with the school.

In all, agencies like the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, and National Agency for Food and Drugs Administration and Control (NAFDAC) should increase the tempo of their effectiveness by investing even more on technological devices that can enhance its ability to detect hard drug traffickers or consumers to frustrate the use of hard drugs in the society.

The saying that it is unwise for people who reside or whose offices are covered in glass to throw stones at passersby or any other person for that matter, is indeed a wise and time-tested saying.

Even Yoruba speaking people also corroborated the above saying when they posited that it is unadvisable for someone to stand in the middle of a crowded market and throw stone. They believe, and maybe rightly so, that by the time the stone lands among the pool of heads, it will fall on the head of a close associate (family, friends) of the stone thrower.

The reason for these wise African sayings is on the issue of a letter purportedly written by American Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, to the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, regarding the conduct of three of his (Dogara’s) men in the House.

The letter dated June 9, 2016, had alleged that honourables Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue) had, on a recent visit to the United States for the International Visitor Leadership Programme (IVLP), solicited for sex from prostitutes and attempted to rape a housekeeper while in Ohio State in that country.

As a foreign affairs reporter of long years standing and a once beneficiary of the same IVLP in the United States before I know too well that these allegations are not only weighty, but capable of marring the understanding and/ or appreciation of the 8th National Assembly not only in the north American nation, but in the entire global diplomatic circle.

The Entwinstle I know, is a gentleman, and will not put pen to paper on mere frivolities or heresy, but he and his home government would have dug deep into the matter and come out with their findings. Again, it is not known to me when soliciting for sex (especially with mutual consent) between two adults has become a sin. But the claim of attempt to rape a housemaid is rather baffling.

Anyway, Speaker Dogara has taken the right step by ordering an investigation into the allegation, while the accused lawmakers themselves had told the leadership of the House to convoke a public investigative hearing on the allegations against them. They are

presumed innocence until proven guilty, and sceptics should not begin to crucify the three lawmakers.

Some weeks back, Senator OmoAgege of the upper chamber had, with support of some of his colleagues, had vocally argued and canvassed for the passage of the Bill against randy lecturers in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

The bill had proffered jail term for any lecturer -male or female (though it seemed targeted at male lecturers) of up to five years but no less than two years with no option of fine.

The Bill reads in part: “He or she (lecturer) shall be guilty if he grabs, hugs, rubs or strokes or touches or pinches the breasts or hair or lips or hips or buttocks or any other sensual part of the body of a student, and many more provisions.

I had argued at length why the federal lawmakers should apply the brakes in the passage of the bill, raising many options to the letterings in the bill. I had strongly argued that ‘randiness’ knows no status or positions. I still believe that lawmakers, whether federal or at the states, not even acclaimed men of God in the country today are saints. The accused lawmakers are saying the allegations against them are sheer prevarications.

They may have a point, and that was why my earlier argument that in the randy lecturer bill, mischievous accusers could file false claim against perceived enemies.

That is not all. I had also strongly advocated for the extension of the scope of the bill to cover all spheres of the society because I am of the candid belief that promiscuity does not start and end in the universities, but is endemic in all facets of the Nigerian society.

With the unfolding drama on this American saga, it is a lesson to Sen. Omo-Agege and his co-travelers to appreciate that they have to capture the entire Nigerian strata in their ‘cherished’ bill. They need to understand and appreciate that the devil could come knocking at anyone’s door at any given time, irrespective of status and position in the society.

While their bill is a welcome development if it means to drastically reduce oppression of female students, especially by their lecturers, the sponsors of the bill would be fair if they expand its scope to capture promiscuity in parliaments, places of worship, offices and any place where male and female folks converge and interact.

Until they add this to the bill, Nigerians would not appreciate the sanity they claim to have in mind in introducing this Bill.

EFCC vs Tarfa: Court fixes October 24 for hearing Peter Fowoyo

ÏÏÏ Hearing in the prosecution

of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) Rickey Tarfa by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was, on Thursday, fixed by a Lagos High Court in Igbosere.

Justice Aishat Opesanwo, yesterday adjourned till October 24 and 31.

The judge told the parties that she was in ‘a poor state of health’ and had just suffered a flooded chamber from the rains of early this week which even affected some court documents.

The Commission was scheduled to open its case on Wednesday in Tarfa’s trial on a two-count charge of obstructing officers of law from carrying out their duties.

He was also accused of attempting to pervert the cause of justice by communicating with a Federal High Court judge that was handling a suit he filed against the Commission.

The suit was adjourned till yesterday because of the judge’s absence.

Tarfa is also facing two other criminal charges preferred against him by the Commission before Justices Raliat Adeniyi and Adedayo Akintoye.

When the matter was called, counsel to EFCC, Mohammed Abba, informed the court that the Commission had two witnesses in court who were ready to testify.

Defence counsel A. J. Owonikoko also indicated his client’s preparedness to proceed.

However, Justice Opesanwo informed the packed courtroom

that she could not proceed with the trial.

“I must disappoint you gentlemen. I’m not in a good state of health. I just managed to strain myself to come here. I think I am really stretched,” the judge said.

She explained that her court had not sat since Monday because the courtroom had been affected by the rains and the judge’s chamber had been flooded.

Her words: “We baled out four buckets from the courtroom. Four buckets of water, you all saw it.

Your colleagues came to sympathise with me the other day, they saw everything. My chambers was open. I still cannot sit in there because of the stench,” the judge said.

She added that even sensitive court files and other documents were sodden by the water.

Arms scam: Air Force boss, Ojuawo docked, gets N10m bail Andrew Orolua, Abuja

the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), in Abuja, on Thursday, granted bail to former Air Officer in Charge of Tactical Air command, Makurdi, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Rufus Ojuawo, in the sum of N10 million and a surety in the like sum.

The surety, according to Justice Mahawayi Baba Idris, must be a civil servant not below the rank of an Assistant Director.

of allegedly receiving a gift of N40 million and a car valued at N29.2m from a contractor, with the Nigerian Airforce (NAF), Mr. Hima Aboubakar of Societe D’ Equipment Internationaux Nig. Ltd.

When the charges were read to him by a clerk of the court, the defendant pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

At this stage, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Francis Jirbo, requested for an adjournment to enable him open his case.

He also asked the court to remand the defendant in prison custody.

However, counsel to the defendant, Mr. Robert Ajabo in opposing the oral application, moved a motion for the release of his client on bail pending trial. He argued that the alleged offence upon which the defendant was charged is bailable in nature.

Dasuki kicks as FG again seeks to shield witnesses Overthrow story Continued from page 1 Court Abuja on Thursday reserved ruling on the motion brought by the federal government seeking to shield witnesses testifying in the trial of former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col Mohammed Sambo Dasuki (rtd) who is facing charges for unlawful possession of firearms, alleged money laundering and breach of trust.

Dasuki’s counsel, Joseph Daudu (SAN) vehemently opposed the application, and argued that his client is being punished by some persons at the highest level of power in the country for perceived grievances held against him while Dasuki was in active military service many years ago.

Though he did not name any par-

ticular person, Dasuki’s lawyer said that the ‘punishment’ being meted out to his client was unfortunate having been borne out of vendetta, adding that the defendant has has rested his case in God for the ultimate judgment.

“It is crystal clear that the defendant (Dasuki) is being punished by the powers that be for the perceived offences committed long before. We leave them to the Almighty God for His ultimate judgment,” Daudu said.

He further said that the use of the words ‘seemingly harmless application’ by the prosecution itself implies that the application is deadly and have advantageous content.

Daudu argued that the prosecution who dropped prayers 2 and 3 of the application knew that the entire prayers trampled upon the rights of

the defendants.

He urged the court to dismiss the application on the grounds that the relief sought had earlier been ruled upon and the court cannot sit on appeal on its own ruling.

He stated that, the prosecution ought to have appeal the ruling of the court of 19th April, 2016, or in the alternative show to the court that new facts have emerged since the refusal of their earlier request.

Daudu argued that the defendant has been in the custody of the government since last December has remained in-communicado, adding the prosecution’s claim of large loyalty are mere speculations with no concrete facts to support them.

The counsel pointed out that Dasuki is being charged with a simple offence that has nothing to do with

the security of the state, hence the need for the protection of witnesses does not arise.

Earlier, citing threat to life of the prospective witnesses following the knock down of the first prosecution witness, Musa Duniya in a motor accident, counsel to the federal government had urged the court to shield other witnesses who have expressed fear for their lives.

Chief Oladipo Okpeseyi (SAN) asked the court for an order to allow witnesses give evidence behind the shield that would protect them from public view.

The request was predicated on the claim that the former NSA has a large followership in the military.

Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) on Thursday took over the assets of three companies of the Silverbird Group belonging to Senator Ben Murray Bruce over an unpaid debt of N11 billion.

However, Senator Ben Murray Bruce reacting on his Twitter handle @Ben MurrayBruce on Thursday expressed optimism that normalcy will be restored.

He wrote: “I have been on an international flight and have only just landed. The situation is being resolved and things will be back to normal”.

“In 36 years, Silverbird has grown

and like anybody, it will face challenges. Tough times don’t last. But we, as tough people, outlast them.”

Silverbird Group is a diversified multi-media company with holdings in Radio, Television, Real Estate, and Cinemas founded in 1980 by Senator Bruce, a businessman and politician.

AMCON stated that when it realised Senator Bruce was not ready to pay back the money, the asset management corporation appointed the Receiver/Manager to recover the loan.

AMCON had, by notice of appointment dated April 18, 2016 appointed Mr. Muiz Banire as Receiver/Manager over the sprawling assets of the companies located at 133 Ahmadu Bello Way, Victoria Island, Lagos; Plot No 1161 (Silverbird Galleria),

Ben Murray Bruce Central Area Cadastral Zone AOO, Abuja; and Abonnema Wharf Road and Abali Park in Port Harcourt,

Rivers State.

The companies affected by the takeover are Silverbird Galleria Limited, Silverbird Promotions Limited, and Silverbird Showtime Limited.

The takeover followed the interim orders granted by Justice Cecilia Olatoregun-Ishola of the Federal High Court, Lagos, on June 17 which allowed the Receiver/Manager to take possession of the said properties.

The properties were seen locked up by the agents of the Receiver/ Manager in an exercise carried out under the supervision of men of the Nigerian police as directed by the Court order.

The statement quoted the Chief of Defence Staff, General Gabriel Olonisakin as assuring “our highly respected political leaders and the entire Nigerians that the military will continue to be apolitical” and will do everything possible to defend and deepen our democratic governance which is the best, acceptable and legitimate form of government the world over.

The Defence Headquarters reiterated its total subordination to civil authority and upholding the supremacy of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to defend all democratic structures and will never yield to blackmail and distractions from fifth columnist.

“Therefore this unfounded story should be discountenance in its entirety,” it stated.

The crisis rocking the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appears becoming intractable as its embattled National Chairman, Senator Ali Modu Sheriff has single-handedly filled the vacant positions in the National Working Committee of the party.

The posts became vacant following the aborted National Convention of the party held in Port Harcourt in May which produced the National Caretaker Committee led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi.

APC to PDP: You can’t dictate to us The All Progressives Congress (APC) has slammed the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) over the threat of the PDP Caucus in the Senate to withdraw support for the ruling party saying the opposition party cannot dictate to them how to run the government. The party in a statement by its National Secretary, Malam Mai Mala Buni said: “For the umpteenth time, the PDP and their agents do not have the luxury of dictating how the current administration and anti-corruption agencies carry out their legitimate duty of investigating and prosecuting cases of corruption, as long as it conforms to the rule of law.

The statement of the National Secretariat of the APC was sequel to a statement credited to the PDP Senate Caucus indicating that the Caucus has withdrawn its support for the government of President Muhammadu Buhari over the administration’s hugely successful war against corruption.

But the APC said the “PDP Caucus must be reminded of their primary responsibility of lawmaking and representation of their constituents at the National Assembly. The APC advises the PDP Senate Caucus not to allow political shenanigans to becloud overall national interest”.

According to the APC, “the PDP Caucus allegations of a selective anti-corruption fight and “belligerent” stance of the current administration is hogwash and baseless”, adding: “if the PDP and its agents have proof of corruption against anybody, the APC advises that they approach antigraft agencies constitutionally mandated to handle such cases instead of declaring innocence on newspaper pages and other media outlets.

“The APC urges anti-corruption agencies not to be stampeded and blackmailed by this new plot and continue to employ all legitimate avenues in investigating and prosecuting ongoing corruption cases”, the statement said, adding”, “The generality of Nigerians clamour for all looters of public funds to be brought to book. The APC assures Nigerians that the political will and sincerity of purpose of the current administration to tackle corruption remains resolute”.

The only female aspirant among the contestants in the Ondo State All Progressives Congress (APC), Mrs. Jumoke Ajasin-Anifowoshe has announced that all the contestants have all resolved to work together for the overall interest of the party ahead of the November 26 guber poll.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after the state party executive held a peace parley with all the aspirants she said: “We have resolved to work together as a family and we shall also cooperate with the state and national executives of the party for the purpose of winning the election”.

Besides, the party has given assurance to all aspirants jostling for its ticket that its delegates list would not be manipulated ahead of the November 26th governorship election in the state.

According to APC, tampering with the delegates lists was a mere rumor that could amount to the breach in the code of conduct and constitution of the party.

Mr. Isaacs Kekemeke, state chairman of the APC who spoke shortly with journalists in Akure, after the close door meeting said the list of the delegates that would elect the party’s flagbearer would be produced by the Congress Com-

mittee as amended by the Congress Appeal Committee of the National Executive Committee of the party.

He admonished all the party’s aspirants to strictly follow the rule of Conduct for party’s Governorship primary penned for August and September as announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

aspirants to unanimously work together as a team with the aim of wining the governorship election of the state.

“This primary election process can be likened to the process of picking a representative by one community for a tournament with another community. During the intra - community process, no good community man will damage or injure his kinsman, so as to

jeopardise the chances of his community in the inter-community contest.

“I plead that no matter energy, time and material resources you have expended and are still expending, you must correctly see such as our contribution to the growth, development and victory of our party at the November 26 Governorship poll” Mr. Kekemeke said. He added that they had become the chief mobilising agents of the party, thanking them for continued financial and logistic support to the party for its operations and assured them that the executives of the party would ensure level playing field for all aspirants in the primary election.

“We are partnering with national leadership of the party to organise free, fair, open, transparent and just governorship primary in Ondo State, and also to emulate success recorded by the just concluded-Edo APC primary election by ensuring level play ground”, he added.

He urged all the aspirants to encourage their supporters to be captured by the ongoing registration of new members of the party in all 203 wards in the state and asked them to mobilise their loyalists to massively participate in the Continuous Voters Registration (CVR) exercise commencing on Wednesday.

As I speak now, we have eight private member bills introduced to the House by some members and three have actually become law while five others are at different stages of law making process. Again, we have passed 80 resolutions and some of them have actually helped the executive in its functions.

These resolutions include the call for the dissolution of the caretaker committees in the local governments and local council development areas of the state. Prior to that, there was a crisis in Mile 12 market and the advice for the relocation of the market to another place within the state came from this House. Also, the House made resolution on the issue of traffic and insecurity in the state and the resolution on the tenure of LASU VC emanated from this House. Although resolutions are advisory, it behoves on the executive to actually determine whether or not

those resolutions would be implemented.

What are the factors that guided the House to extend the tenure of LG chairmen to four years which are beyond the knowledge of the public?

The local government is the creation of the House of Assembly and that is how it is expressly written in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. And in the wisdom of the House before now, the three year tenure was prescribed for the local government system in this state. In some states, local government chairmen have two years as their tenure, so, it is not a uniform thing but it is the House’s decision.

But of course, looking at the cost of conducting election and for us to have some levels of uniformity in the state like other elected officers who have fouryear tenure, the House felt that the tenure of the local government chairmen should not be an

exemption and with the experience we had during the last election, it is glaring that the cost of running election in Nigeria is a bit high. So, the House felt that we should have a rethink about the tenure of local government chairmen and we looked at what is sustainable by the state and that was why the House agreed that the local government system in the state should be allowed to have four-year tenure.

To what extent is the House independent of the executive because the House passed a resolution last week that the caretaker committee chairmen across the state be sacked by the governor and appoint sole administrators but before the House resolution on that day, the list of the sole administrators have been released.

APC is delaying the conduct of local government election because of the fear that it may lose some local governments as being played out during the last general election, how would you react to this?

I wonder where this speculation is coming from because I don’t think we have any viable opposition in Nigeria, especially in Lagos State. Although we have eight PDP members in the House now as against what obtained in the last Assembly, it is enough to

conclude that we will lose some local governments if election is conducted today. As a matter of fact, the wise ones among them should use the opportunity of crisis rocking their party to decamp to APC now and I want to believe that some of them should be considering that now.

There is also an insinuation in some quarters that the issue of caretaker committee is not constitutional; I want to know why the law making body keeps approving it?

The matter is in court on the issue you are talking about and there was a judgment in favour of those that went to court but the state has actually appealed that judgment and the matter is still in court. I think when this matter came up, the electoral body in Lagos gave a clear reason that it could not hold election that time and part of the reasons it gave was that the INEC had not released the voters’ register.

As a House, our responsibility on this issue is to give approval or make provision for funds for the executive to conduct the local government election. We made the provision for the election to be held this year but we cannot afford to leave a vacuum in the local government. It is in the constitution that only democratically elected officers should be at the helms of affairs in the local governments.

To my knowledge, the list of the current sole administrators was not released until Monday some days after the House’s resolution. You will agree with me that before such appointment was made a lot of speculations would have been flying around and at the end of the day, many names that have been touted could not make the list. It is just a mere speculation but a few lucky ones being touted may make it and that is how it is each time the appointment is about to be made. I want to say categorically that this House is not an arm of the executive, we are independent arm of government and that is how it is.

Also, the House oversight functions actually gave us opportunity to see closely some of the activities going on in the local governments and the committee on local

government administration went on an oversight inspection on some of the roads that the state government supported in all local governments across the state. And I am sure you are all aware that the governor gave directive that two roads should be constructed in every local government and that directive was followed and the government actually gave some support to the local government to that effect.

Moreover, about the time the second tranche of disbursement was going to be released to the local governments, the committee of the House as part of its oversight functions decided to visit those roads in various local governments and I think what they saw partly informed the advice that the caretaker committees should be dissolved but the report has not been officially presented on the floor of the House. It will be prejudiced if I dwell more on the report but as an insider, I know that some of what the committee saw was not palatable. Secondly, we realized that the allocation as dictated from the federal government to the state is reducing and for the local governments to be

A few days before the pronouncement of that resolution, the House had approved the appointment of the immediate past Chief Judge of the state, Justice Ayotunde Phillips as the new LASIEC boss to put the state electoral body in good step to conduct local government election.

Simon Lalong of Plateau State may have settled for ranching as a 14-man committee set up by the state government submitted report, giving nod to the policy.

Lalong, who is set to begin consultation, on Thursday, at the Government House in Jos, met with traditional rulers and heads of government during the submission of the committee report headed by the Plateau State Peace Building Agency (PPB), He also met with the

Senate’s spokesman, Senator Sabi Abdulahi in a statement took a critical look at the anti-corruption war by the government of President Buhari which he described as selective and targeted at the perceive opponents of his government.

Sabi Abdulahi said: “This rule of men as against the rule of law is also the reason why the War Against Corruption, one of the cardinal objectives of the present administration, is losing credibility because people perceive it to be selective and, in most cases, aimed at settling political or partisan scores.

Soldiers, policemen exchange gunfire over Ramadan rice in Borno ÏÏÏAt

least one person was injured Thursday at the Borno State Government House when soldiers and police exchanged fire as they fought over food items distributed by the government to mark the Ramadan fast.

The government has since Monday distributed large amounts of rice and Semovita to poor residents.

On Thursday, thousands of people converged at the entrance of the Government House in Maiduguri, the state capital, forming a lengthy queue of men, women and the aged who hoped for either a 25kg bag of rice or Semovita, or both.

As the distribution started, po-

lice barred vehicles from accessing the venue, except those on special permission.

At about 11am, a Nigerian Army truck showed up, insisting on gaining access to the venue where rice and Semovita were being shared.

Suspecting that the soldiers were trying to help themselves to the handouts, police officers demanded they turn back immediately.

This led to an argument and an angry soldier allegedly opened fire, injuring a policeman in the leg, witnesses said.

The police responded and gunshots rent the air as thousands gathered scampered for safety.

It took the intervention of other senior security officers to arrest the situation from degenerating.

One of the army officers drafted to help control the crowd, identified only as Idris, a lieutenant, did not go free, as angry policemen who accused him of instigating the crisis, beat him up.

The Commander of the Operation Lafiya Dole, Lucky Irabor, a Major General, was called in by the Borno State Attorney General, Kaka Shehu Lawan, to restore order.

Calm returned after Gen. Irabor arrived alongside the state police commissioner and the director of

State Security Service.

Addressing the parties in conflict, Irabor described the situation as “shameful and highly unbecoming of uniformed officers”.

“What is a bag of rice that will give you the cause to be angry? Bag of rice? It is shameful. Stealing from the poor

W

e entered a new low this week with the screaming headline of the online newspaper, Premium Times, “Boko Haram victims dying of starvation as Borno officials steal relief materials”, depicting how our public servants wade through pig slurry.

The news story tells us far more about how public servants are having a good time playing poker with the lives of poor citizens, and, perhaps more interestingly, about how they steal from the poor. Damning. Shocking.

Then the obvious question is, given the predilection for theft, can there ever be a limit to the thievery of our public servants? In a sense, the answer is NO. But in another sense, one can wager a bet that the question is more poignant than the answer.

However shocking the headline is, at least, the meat of the news story is damning enough for every discerning reader to take the depths of the new lows seriously.

Here is the news story, reproduced in part: “Officials of the Borno State government in charge of administering foods and other relief materials for Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) are in trouble for allegedly re-bagging and diverting rice donated by philanthropic organisations and well-meaning individuals. Thousands of IDPs in over twenty camps around Maiduguri are left hungry as officials enrich selves from the sales of diverted food meant for IDPs. Many have died of starvation while hundreds have been hospitalized...

In Bama town, hungry and malnourished IDPs die on daily basis because of inadequate food supply. Governor Shettima had to visit Bama camp after receiving report that IDPs were dying rapidly due to lack of care and proper nutrition. Sources in Bama said that before the governor’s visit on Wednesday, bodies wrapped in mats and being moved for burial sites were common sights at the camp “almost on a daily basis”. “We have lost count of people that have died so far in this camp”, said a concerned local camp official. “It was really a messy situation when you have to pick corpses of malnourished persons every day, sometimes some of the dead ones may not even be discovered on time”.

The theft is not restricted to food items alone, medical drugs, toiletries, beddings and wrappers have been diverted to the market and sold by greedy officials”.

Aren’t you shell-shocked, lost for words, dear reader?

The least vicissitudes any heartless

public servant would visit on a people who have gone to hell and back, witnessed the savagery and butchery of one of the most deadliest terrorist groups in the world- Boko Haram- yet survived only by the skin of their teeth to tell their sad stories from camps barely fit for habitation- is to steal their food stuff, drugs, toiletries, beddings to make them poorer.

For a people slowly picking up what is left of their lives, slowly finding their feet again, to be so cheated out of the goodnesses and mercies of Samaritans shows who we are and what we are as a nation of people.

To have survived the hellholes and sinkholes that war dug into their homes, only to die from hunger, starvation and malnutrition in IDPs camps in peacetime is one of the strange ironies that life in our country reveals when the guns are silent, is one of the great ironies we will have to deal with for a long time to come.

But, how can we in the face of the mindless thieving of the public good progress to somewhere caring and redeeming?

The conditions which made Boko Haram to fester were created in the first place by these thieving public servants. One would have expected them to seize the peace of the time to seek expiation of their wrongs, atone for their crimes, and show that they are truly sorry for the terrible things they had done by doing good to cancel their sins. No, they persist in their bad and terrible ways as they go on doing evil, despising the victims of armed conflict, doing what they know is wrong.

The behaviors of these upturned souls who steal from the poor while they preach love highlight some of the worrying aspects of governance in our country today.

The worrying aspect for me is the lack of compassion public servants show for the poor, for those who survived the hell and death unleashed by murderous warbands. The more worrying aspect which ties up with lack of compassion is the dearth of empathy and outrage inside governments at all levels.

Here, the dearth of empathy and outrage makes one wonders if those chosen to lead pretty understand what it actually means to lead, what it takes to provide leadership, to care and to love, to be close to where pain aches the poor rather than distance themselves from it, and to act when the urgency of the times demands urgent action. No more, no less.

Hear: true leadership doesn’t insist on the type of distancing from the moral urgency of the conditions of the times we experience with our leaders nowadays, it demands commitment and the courage of

conviction of leaders to confront the miseries doing the poor in, doesn’t imbue leaders with the desire to seek only their “bottled happiness”, their lost but found sweethearts from the unbottled Chateau Margaux Bordeaux, to paraphrase the late Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda, it invites them to take on the collective burdens by helping those who fall through the cracks of the iniquitous social system. Not here.

Certainly not here. Our leaders, unperturbed by the blood and the deaths around us, unthankful for the goodness of following and the value of active followership, are lost to the canvas of pain distorting our humanity, blotting the landscape, lost to the tears that soil the flag of independence, the flood of grief ravaging where we live in, and torn hearts yearning for healing and redemption.

We need leaders who do not rob Peter and Paul to pay themselves.

The Nigerian state rewards criminals and turns a blind eye to

those who dip their filthy hands into the till of the state. Where there are no discernible sanctions for criminal infractions, where punishment doesn’t fit the crime, criminals who pass themselves off as leaders acquire a dubious sense of entitlement - an overarching right of possession- ownership and control of our patrimony.

It is this sense of entitlement that highlights the truth of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti’s “authority stealing”. It is this pervasive and overarching right of possession that makes the wives of ex-governors to empty the kitchens of our Government Houses out, stealing gold plates, pots, utensils, including wooden spatulas for turning amala and tuwo mansara. It is this right of ownership that makes political appointees to acquire their official cars at rock-bottom prices. It is this totalizing power of control that allows public servants to award “fantastically” humongous severance packages to themselves at the twilights of their tenures.

PDP crisis not good for Nigeria’s democracy Paul Okolo

F

or the People’s Democratic Party, Nigeria’s ruling party for 16 unbroken years, the journey since it lost power last year has been swiftly downhill. Following the epic 2015 Presidential elections in which the All Progressives Congress(APC) flag bearer Muhammadu Buhari defeated incumbent President Goodluck Jonathan, the party’s fortune has gone from bad to worse. Though many saw the electoral defeat coming, it was still earth shaking. Revelations of primitive stealing of public funds by party members in government brought odium on the party.

With its reputation, or what was left of it destroyed, the PDP also witnessed an exodus of its followers to the new party in power. But rather than picking itself up and beginning a dignified process of self cleansing to properly function as the new opposition party, it appears to be

sinking deeper. In a manner similar to the bad behaviour that cost it the 2015 polls, the party is now engulfed in a struggle for power. At least three factions are laying claim to being the rightful occupant of Wadata Plaza.

One faction is led by Senator Ali Modu Sheriff; another by Ahmed Maikarfi; and the third by Ibrahim Mantu.

Trouble started to brew after Sheriff, formerly of the APC and the All Nigeria People’s Party before it, surprisingly emerged as national chairman. Some ranking PDP members, shocked by the development, set out to reclaim the party. This is in keeping with a Yoruba proverb, which says it is impossible for the head of a newborn child to be deformed when an elderly person is in the market. However, Sheriff would not relinquish power quietly.

What is disheartening is that there seems to be nobody of repute who can rally the PDP troops. ExPresident Goodluck Jonathan who

controlled state and party affairs from 2010 until May last year would have been a natural choice. However, he is busy globetrotting, as an international statesman. It does not appear the internal affairs of the PDP are causing him sleepless nights.

Former PDP President Olusegun Obasanjo also cannot be approached to arbitrate for obvious reasons.

Long before the last elections, he had publicly torn his party’s membership card. For a party that controlled the centre for about two decades, it would be assumed that there cannot be a shortage of reputable persons to mend things when they are broken.

In the case of the PDP, you would be mistaken if you held that view. Other power brokers who could have offered wise counsel have either been brushed aside or are principal actors in the circus show.

Without a strong PDP, observers believe the APC would become complacent, even arrogant. It was Bola Tinubu, one of the founding fathers of the APC, who was quoted as saying that a worthy opposition party is the first step toward progress as it will help “to ensure the sanctity of the ballot box, foster respect for the rule of law and to build (enduring) democratic and economic institutions,” all of which are essential for Nigeria. Where there is no viable opposition, impunity sets in.

Rom 12:2 NIV Life itself is a choice and whatever choices one make in life determines one’s success or failure. If someone goes for a right choice, success is surely guaranteed and as well, if a wrong choice is made, surely the person is heading for failure. Many people have a variety of views regarding selecting a husband or wife according to the will of God. Many believers are afraid that they might go out of the will of God or miss out ‘’on God’s best’’. Many believe that there is only one person whom the lord has selected for each believer .

Knowing the will of God is a serious issue in Christian marriage. Many Christians marry without knowing what the will of God is for their marriage. I have heard people say that as long as you do not marry an unbeliever you have fulfilled the will of God for your marriage. No wonder Christian divorce rate is soaring like those of the people of the world.

The Permissive Will of God

One of the plans of God for us is that we should not be lonely. He wants us to have a companion either as husband or as wife: “And the LORD God said, it is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.”

(Genesis 2:18 KJV). So what is the permissive will of God? God permit Christians to marry a fellow Christian but he does not permit us to marry an unbeliever. A point to note here is that the fact that He permits something does not mean it is His will. For instance, if someone is praying for a life partner on basis of the fact that the partner is a Christian and God is telling the fellow that do not be carried away by his or her outward appearance and qualities, but you insist that you will go ahead without following the divine directives, God may permit you to marry the fellow, the consequential effects will be borne by the

disobedient fellow. God cannot be held responsible for anyone non-challant attitude. He knows the exact reason why, if the person is obedient and waits for God’s timing, the person will laugh the best.

The scripture says “Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? In addition, what communion hath light with darkness? In addition, what concord hath Christ with Belial? Alternatively, what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? ” (2Corinthians 6:1415) A believer has been sanctified by the blood of Jesus and brought out of darkness; as a result he should not be bound in holy matrimony with an infidel. Note that this does not mean that a believer cannot have unbelievers as friends but when it comes to the issue of marriage, believers are not permitted to marry an unbeliever (Deuter-

onomy 7:2-3). In Christianity, marriage is a kind of covenant that can only be broken by death without committing adultery (Romans 7:3-4). The scripture also explains to us that when couples are joined together in matrimony the two of them become one flesh (1Corinthians 6:16-18,). Therefore, my message to believer singles here is that they should never try to go out with an unbeliever let alone considering courtship. It is dangerous because you might fall in love and you will not be able to get out of it. Now that we know that God only permit Christians to marry Christians, how do you actually know that the brother or the sister you see in the church is actually a true believer. In fact, many agent of the devil actually abounds in the Some marriage counsellors may give you loads of questions to ask a brother or sister and that if the questions are answered correctly, then the fellow is your wife or husband. Brethren, the children of this world (darkness) are wiser than the children of God (Luke 16:8). Those in darkness can lie, pretend and humble themselves to get what they need from you. If you are deceived to marry a pretender, your life may never be the same. So how do you know who is a true Christian? Better still, how do you know the actual will of God? This will lead us what we called “perfect will of God’’

Subair Mohammed What is the most profitable trade on earth in which the hearts find rest? Is it the business activities we engage in that keep us away from the worship of Allah? Is it our children or the amount of wealth and riches that are easily extinguishable?

What then is the most profitable trade for mankind on earth? Allah (swt) says Q13:28, “Truly, it is by the Remembrance of Allah that hearts find rest.” Dhikr Allah (remembrance of Allah) is essentially to have Allah in our hearts and minds at all times.

It is the remembrance of the tongue and worship of the limbs in worship. Islam enjoin every believers to be with Allah by loving Him, turning to Him in all our affairs, by obeying His commands out of love, thanks and servant hood, for He is “closer to you than your jugular vein,” and He does not let the efforts of those who seek Him go to waste.

Remembering Allah is the most profitable trade. It is the second best activity a believer can spend his time on after the recitation of the Qur’an.

Relating the virtues of Dhikr, Prophet of Islam (saw) said “Shall I tell you about among your deeds, the purest in the estimation of Allah, the highest of your deeds in status, which is better for you than spending gold and silver, and is better for you than encountering your enemies and striking their necks and them striking yours?

The companions said, “Yes, indeed inform us, O messenger of Allah”. The prophet said “(it is) the remembrance of Allah” (At-tirmidhi).

The above tradition of the prophet expresses the weight of being in constant remembrance of Allah. But with ummah caught in the ocean of affluent and opulent, in endless struggle for power and fame and in their strive to possess the world not remembering the actual creator and the purpose for His creating the world.

As He says in Quran 51:56 “And I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me”. So, is there any worldly act that ought to supersede the worship of Allah? How close we are to Allah determines our worth and His closeness to us. How often you are in remembrance of Allah determines our level of righteousness and purity.

Cleric tasks Muslims on propagation of Islam Muslims in Nigeria, especially Oyo state have been advised to positively propagate the teachings of Islam in this revered month of Ramadan and beyond.

From this perspective, I want to say that the denial of Muslim female the use of hijab in public schools by the government is disobedience to Allah’s commandment.

The aim is not to Islamised public schools but it is all about promoting modesty, decency and the pride of the girl child. Hijab is part of our religion. It is Allah’s commandment on all female Muslims therefore it should be allowed for the attainment of a sane society.

Protection of human lives Lastly, Islam has come to protect human lives. Life is sacred and this is why Allah in the glorious Qur’an forbids taking of human lives except by constituted authority.

Surah Al-isra verse 33 says “nor take life which Allah has made sacred except for just cause”.

However, Islam enjoins us to be righteous and being righteous is not to trample on the rights of other people. No true believer would kill his fellow in the name of propagating his religion. Allah has enjoins all believers to treat non-Muslims in a kind and fair manner (Qur’an 60:8) and that we (Muslims) should repel evil with good deeds.

Nduka Uzuakpundu Rebranding Nigeria by blotting out the ugly past and unveiling a promising profile is not going to be an over-night job, said the President of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) Dr. Rotimi Oladele, but he is optimistic that NIPR can help matters by trying to brighten the image of Nigeria.

Yes, she’s faced with the crisis of insurgency, youth unemployment, seasonal electoral violence, unrest and economic sabotage in the Niger Delta region, falling standards of education and, amongst others, corruption, which the Buhari administration has vowed to uproot from the country’s political system.

But, Dr. Oladele thinks that the body could do a good job of presenting a new, promising and reliable Nigeria to the outside world.

Said he: “We have to take it from the causative factor to have a change in the mind-set of every Nigerian, particularly the youths, because the adult are already dry fishes. We need to address the new Nigerian so that they can grow with a new mind-set and that means we must have curriculum in primary and secondary school system that can equip and utilise the psycho-motor, the affective and cognitive aspects as well.

“If that is done, every secondary school leader will be able to provide food on his table, while waiting for further studies or make do with the enterprise and earn a good living and employ some workers.

“If he has access to tertiary education, it will be with a mind and life-style and a bent on innovation, not liability that we have today, via breeding an army of consumers. We need to breed creative founders, investors and innovators. If that happens to our educational system, Nigeria’s reputation would change for good.

“There is no amount of sloganeering that you can do to someone who knows nothing about how to

Oladele said that it was integrity and service, which had been quite useful to the advancement of the Institute that won him the hearts of the voters, who, at a recent congress of the Institute, in Ibadan, elected him and his team for another term in office. It’s that same integrity and service that he said the NIPR could inject into an ambitious programme to brighten the country’s reputation.

Reacting to his electoral success, Oladele said: “I think that members in their wisdom believed in continuity, which means progress, and makes things faster, as well. We’ll continue from where we stopped, rather than a new beginning. We have a 16-strong Governing Council, with three new members. The members believed in the team and my re-election is for the team to work harder for continuity and better service.”

For Oladele, his first two years in office were quite eventful to the effect that, “We gave each member of the Institute an identity on which a tab could be kept and easily verified, with a corporate touch, so as to keep quacks away from our body. Every member now has a certificate with a number. My certificate and practicing number is 1450021.

“Two years ago, I had no number. That number belongs to me forever, until I pass away. Nobody can use it. That’s a great mileage. If anything happens, and it’s a public relations act, and you want to find out who did it, we can confidently identify the actor. If I

want to practice as a consultant, a member of the NIPR, that’s my number. So, if I write any release, say, to the media, that’s my number. That, alone makes it impossible for anyone to impersonate me.

“It’s a warning to quacks. If you don’t have a certificate number or practicing licence, you cannot say you are a member of the NIPR or public relations practitioner. If somebody wants to use you for a cheap popularity exercise or propaganda or something criminal, and the person has signed the piece as a fellow or member of the

institute, you can ask the character for his certificate number.

If it’s not in the document presented to you. You can then call the registrar of the NIPR to find out whether it’s true the person in question is, indeed, a member of the Institute.

“That’s a firm measure to stem criminality, impersonation, fraud, quackery, etc. Besides, we have been able to have a befitting secretariat in Abuja, a suitable Lagos Office. We have also had good study centres, where people go for lectures to prepare for the

examination of the Institute.

“We have the honour of introducing a new curriculum by moving from 15 subjects to 21 subjects – and with diversification into other areas of empowerment like social media, financial management, quantitative method, corporate social responsibility, and event management, which is becoming very germane today.

All these used to be mentioned in passing but, today, we have realised that each of these new subjects is a big area of study.

The 52nd Founder’s Day Anniversary of Motailatu Organisation Worldwide has come and gone but activities marking the epoch-making event still reverberate in Ondo City, Ondo State where the headquarters of Motailatu Church of God is situated.

The three-day event was well attended by members and elders of the

church from various parishes.

The organisation was founded

by His Most Eminence, Archbishop Isaiah M. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu) on June 14, 1964.

He died on December 26, 2014.

The celebration of this year’s anniversary, presided over by the Chairman, Board of Trustees of the church, Senior Superintendent

Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II), was unique in many ways.

Many spiritual/historical sites were visited starting from Friday, June 10 when the event commenced.

A convoy of vehicles from Ondo City went to Bolorunduro town, a distance of 15 minutes, to worship in Oke Igbala Olu C&S Church founded in 1936 by the late Chairman, Spiri-

tual Workers’ Union in the defunct Western Region, Saint Benjamin A. Adekahunsi.

We also have the internal examination for tertiary institutions by which universities and polytechnics – especially those that have aligned their syllabus with that of the NIPR – can now write our examinations as an internal academic exercise, and the regulators like the National University Commission (NUC) or National Board on Technical Education (NBTE), depending on the level of the educational body or organisation. So, that makes it possible for our accreditation committee to partner, very easily, with both the NUC and NBTE.” There was also a long standing issue of accumulated financial obligation at the international level, which the Oladele administration has met. “We were able to pay all the NIPR’s outstanding membership fees dues to the Global Alliance, which is the world body, and with that feat, we are able to participate, actively, in the activities of the global body. We have, since then, been in Spain. We were in Kenya with 22 members. In May, we were in Toronto, Canada, with 30 members. All that international outing has elevated the NIPR a great deal. The previous regime did not see the Global Alliance angle as a priority, as we did. Nigeria is not an isolated country. She’s operating within an international system.

We must strive hard to meet up with global standards.

“If we want our practice to be recognised and seen as relevant, we must take a cue from what obtains in other countries.

We now share experience and knowledge with Spain, Canada, United States, Italy etc. – indeed, all the members of Global Alliance. We have tailored our Code of Ethics in line with that of the Global Alliance, and contributed our quota to the body of knowledge called Public Relation. For instance, in Kenya, recently, I chaired two sessions, just as I did in Madrid, Spain.

So, that’s beautiful for us, because Nigeria is now visibly present in the field of Public Relations. We’re now recognised as occupying a conspicuous, strategic position.”

From there, the close to 20 vehicles in the convoy moved to Mount Ararat in the same vicinity where Special Apostle David Akinadewo preached on the essence of ‘the powerful effect of prayer on the mountain’, as illustrated by the Biblical Prophet Elijah and Jesus Christ.

As he was preaching, heavens sent ‘showers of blessing’ on those in attendance.

The convoy immediately moved to the Cathedral of Oke Igbala Olu C&S Church in Sabo area of Ondo City, also founded by Saint Adekahunsi, for a revival and later prayed at the tombs of Adekahunsi and Holy Mother Emily O. Akinadewo.

After returning to the Mission House of Motailatu Church of God on Brigadier Ademulegun Road, special prayers were also held at the tombs of the Patriarch and Matriarch of the church, Archbishop Akinadewo and Superintendent General Apostolic Mother Mary A. Akinadewo.

After the prayers, series of bible lessons were conducted which dovetailed into vigil at St. Adekahunsi Motailatu Cathedral, Oke Iwosan, Ondo.

The vigil, conducted by Special Apostle Babajide Akinadewo, started at 10 pm and lasted till 6:05 on Saturday morning.

At 2pm, a procession was held round the town and hundreds of residents joined the parishioners.

Shouts of ‘Motailatu’, ‘Omo Jesu’ and ‘Baba Oluso’ were heard from the joyous crowd as the convoy moved through popular streets, such as Oke-Isegun, Lafenwa, Olorunsola, Yaba, Idi-Isin, Surulere, Ope Oluwa, Gani Fawehinmi and Mokola.

The ‘seven prayers in seven minutes’ session was spiritually magnifying and soul lifting as members prayed for the world, Africa, Nigeria, Ondo State, Ondo City, families and individuals.

The anniversary cake was later cut by some of the elders with prayers by everybody “for God to keep us alive” to attend the 53rd anniversary next year.

Thrills of Ogidi Day yam festival The ancient town of Ogidi-Ijumu, in Kogi

Irrespective of age, title or social standing, everybody in Ogidi-Ijumu town, in Kogi State, was gaily dressed in colourful adire and embroidered aso oke for the celebration of the annual Ogidi Day/New yam festival.

The streets were filled with the townspeople and visitors as they danced, clapped and wriggled their waists to the music being played by the local music makers.

As the drumbeats got louder with intermittent gun shots from local hunters, shouts of joy (this is Ogidi Day) rent the air as each association approached the community hall grounds (Agegbe), the main venue for the festival.

The youths danced and displayed their acrobatic skills, while law enforcement agents controlled the surging crowd, which included camera-wielding white foreigners.

This was the scene last Saturday in Ogidi-Ijumu, Kogi State during this year’s Ogidi-Ijumu Day/New yam festival. The new yam festival is an annual event held to usher in new yam from the farm, and to symbolically end the planting season.

At about 2pm, the venue was already filled with people as His Royal Mejesty, Oba Rabiu Oladimeji, Ologidi of Ogidi, in his full ceremonial regalia, was escorted into the arena by his gaily-dressed chiefs with traditional music accompanying the entourage, while the king acknowledged the various performing troupes.

According to Oba Oladimeji, the event is a vital reminder to the Ogidi people about their roots and culture. He, therefore, called on the people to embrace their history instead of shying away from it. He urged them to be proud of their culture and called on the youths to embrace the event.

The festival, always colourfully traditional, featured various groups singing and dancing while accompanied by a grand parade of masquerades. There was also the carnival by the farmers showing off their bumper harvest for

The Ogidi Day and New Yam festival which holds every June is one important event cherished by the indigenes to celebrate their culture and history. The festival is characterised by traditional rites

the year. Traditional breaking of kolanut, cultural dance display from states in the South West also featured.

Hon. James Faleke, Chairman, House Committee on Customs, who was the Chairman of the day, said not only did the festival compelement the tourism objectives of the state government, but it had gone steps ahead in promoting the state as the best and most diverse tourist destination in Nigeria. “We are happy because the Ogidi Yam festival is growing each year and that is because we believe in our culture”.

Explaining the significance of the event, Chief (Mrs.) Nike Okundaye, Chief Executive of Lagos-based Nike Art Gallery, who is a prominent indigene, explained that the festival is the people’s way of thanking God for a bumper harvest of yam, which is the king of crops. According to her, the various villages have, for centuries, remained faithful to celebrating the important aspect of this culture. She, therefore, stated that this year’s event was

significant because of the revival of interest in culture. “The Ogidi Day is our prime heritage and we thank God that our people have kept faith with it”, Okundaye said.

Convener of Odu’a People’s Congress (OPC), Chief Gani Adams, was one of those bestowed with special Ogidi titles at the event. Engr. Oluseyi Omotoso, Chief Benjamin Oluwodora and others were also honoured.

On arrival at Ogidi town, one is greeted by a landscape of rocks that evokes an aura of environment consciously set for encounter with some forces of nature.

The many tall, formidable and fearful boulders, which hang dangerously over the land are a wonder to behold.

Less than five kilometres from Kabba Bunu Local Government Area, the Ogidi rocks and the town are the main wonder of the people and their cultural heritage.

Ogidi-land is situated on the Southwestern tip of the old Northern region, which is in the present day Middle-Belt. It is about three and half hours’ drive from Abuja.

The presence of Chief (Mrs.) Okundaye and members of the Diplomatic Corps spiced up the event. One of the highpoints of the event was when Mrs. Okundaye accompanied the French

Ambassador to the podium to express the corps’ appreciation of the event.

For those who witnessed the colourful event, it was a mentally enriching day to remember.

World Music Day is here

World Black Festival

Also known as the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture Festac ‘77 was a cultural jamboree held in Lagos, 15 January to 12 February 1977. The month-long event celebrated African culture and showcased to the world African music, fine art, literature, drama, dance and religion. About 16,000 participants, representing 56 African nation and countries of the African Diaspora, performed at the event.

FESTAC ‘77 @ 40: CBAAC gets OBJ’s nod on African leaders Agozino Agozino The continuous drive by the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) to promote African culture through the active participation of prominent leaders, may have paid off as former President Olusegun Obasanjo has pledged to support CBAAC. His support would be in form of an invitation to all former African heads of state, who participated during FESTAC ‘77, to

visit Nigeria when the 40th anniversary celebrations of the festival kick off at a later date.

The anniversary would kick off in Nigeria with a carnival to showcase all the works exhibited by participating countries during FESTAC 77.

The management of CBAAC, led by the Director- General, Dr. Ferdinand Anikwe, got the pledge from the former President during a courtesy visit to Chief Obasanjo at his Hilltop residence in Abeokuta, Ogun

State.

He was the military head of state when Nigeria hosted the second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture (FESTAC’77), in Lagos. The festival, which was a watershed in the history of black and African people, witnessed the gathering of 59 African countries and communities in a rare show of cultural display.

While responding to the FESTAC’77 video, put together by CBAAC, Obasanjo said: “I think

it is very thoughtful and very kind of CBAAC to put this beautiful piece together and I want to thank you for keeping the spirit of FESTAC alive” adding that after the festival, some of the participated countries left their arts for safe keeping so that the memory of FESTAC could be preserved.

He added that 39 years after Nigeria hosted FESTAC’77, no country had been able to organise such an event and, “as Nigerians, we must be proud of this,

because we have something to show to the world”.

Obasanjo who was elated by the visit of the CBAAC team, said that the 40th anniversary of FESTAC’77, would coincide with his 80th Birthday celebrations and promised to assist the centre by drawing the attention of the President to the importance of the forthcoming event.

Anikwe later thanked Obasanjo for his magnanimity and the fatherly role he has been playing in moving Nigeria forward.

Goethe begins Lagos Live festival

N’ Delta crisis: Security expert calls for dialogue, lauds IGP’s choice

ÏÏÏ The Chief Executive Of-

ficer (CEO) of ITEX Nigeria, a security outfit in Lagos, Ernest Nwachukwu Uduje, has called on stakeholders within the Niger Delta region to come together and find a lasting solution to the lingering crisis there.

He made this call while speaking to newsmen in Lagos, and noted that only an all-inclusive strategy to deal with the Niger Delta crisis could bring durable peace.

In his words: “The fight by the Niger Delta people has come a long way. We all know that the region has

suffered some setbacks, but from all indications there is light at the end of the tunnel.

The Niger Delta Avengers, as well as every other group that claim to have the interest of the region at heart, must understand that the use of violence will not do much good. The Minister of State for Petroleum, Ibe Kachiukwu must come together with stakeholders in the region to dialogue and ensure that the plight of the people there region is taken care of, so as to move our economy forward.”

Uduje, who also spoke on the recent appointment of a new Acting Inspector-

General of Police, congratulated the Buhari administration, saying that it was a step in the right direction, considering the wealth of experience of the Acting Inspector-General of Police Ibrahim Idris.

He said that, “It is the first time a president is looking beyond sentiment, tribal affinity or any form of interest to appoint a police chief.

“I must congratulate President Muhammadu Buhari on his recent appointment of the Acting IGP Ibrahim Idris to pilot the affairs of the Nigeria Police Force. For me, his appointment is significant

in that the president, being a man who values competence as well as diligence has once again proven that he has the interest of the people at heart.

“This is a change in the right direction. A lot of persons were suggested to take over from the immediate past IGP, Solomon Arase.

But the president being a leader who wants the best for his people, decided to appoint a man who is disciplined, selfless and passionate about the job of policing.

“Unlike the previous governments whose decisions were based on some form of affinity, Mr. President has

however shown that he is a man who values quality by choosing a man with great repute and one with a rich experience in operations. On a second thought, I am not completely surprised with the appointment because with the changes we saw with the leadership of the Nigeria Customs Service, The Nigeria Army, The Navy and other security agencies, I knew the Police wouldn’t be any different.”

Uduje, therefore, called on all officers and men of the Nigeria Police force to give Idris all the needed support and co-operation to move the agency forward.

Gov. Ahmed seeks abrogation of citizenship Kehinde Akinpelu Ilorin

ÏÏÏ Kwara State Governor,

Dr Abdulfatah Ahmed, has advocated the review of the concept of citizenship to place emphasis on the place of residence, in order to suit the current exigencies and for the benefit of all.

He made the call while playing host to Committee on Police Recruitment in Ilorin, and expressed dismay over the challenges of citizenship as it affects residents in an area. The Governor argued further that there was an urgent need to address the problem with a view to cementing unity among Nigerians.

Governor Ahmed raised the alarm over what he described as proliferation of fake certificates and suggested a verification exercise to scrutinise applicants for the police job and other recruitment exercises.

According to the governor, “The verification of certificate is very germane in order to guide against criminals getting their ways into, especially our security system”.

Speaking earlier, team leader, Dr. Femi Ogunsola told the governor that they were in the state in respect of the ongoing police recruitment exercise.

Ogunsola explained that the committee was put in place by police service commission to oversee ongoing police recruitment to ensure a hitch-free exercise.

abeth Favour Nkwuda and Paulinus Nkwuda, have instituted a N500 million suit at Abakaliki High Court against Mile Four Hospital Abakaliki, for alleged culpable medical negligence, poor assessment and mismanagement of the former’s pregnancy, leading to the death of her baby in the womb.

The baby allegedly died during an unauthorised surgical operation per-

formed on the lady by medical team of the hospital.

Others joined in the suit are the Hospital Administrator, Rev. Sister Celine Anikwem, Dr. Azubuike and Dr, Osuagwu as 2nd, 3rd and 4th Defendants, respectively.

The 3rd and 4th defendants were the doctors who handled the lady’s situation at the labour room.

In a five-page witness statement on oath through his counsel, Barrister Nwugo C. Nwugo, Mr. Nkwuda alleged that neither he nor

his wife gave consent neither by oral or in signature to the surgical operation which took the life of their baby boy.

He said even after the surgical operation on his wife, neither the Doctor, who performed it nor the nurses or anybody in the team deemed it necessary to inform him or his wife how and why the baby boy died if they were not responsible and culpable for his death.

He added that despite the condition of his wife, she was forced out of her bed

and the bed was assigned to another person by the hospital management.

He said notwithstanding the medical negligence, the management also forced him to pay N20,950 for drugs and N40,000 for caesarian section.

He contended that negligence, mismanagement and poor assessment of his wife’s pregnancy by the 3rd and 4th defendants and their team which occasioned the death of their baby were as a result of incompetence and quackery.

chaga local government of Niger State,Yusuf Inuwa Fuka, on Thursday described the three-day warning strike, which began on Wednesday, in all the 25 local government areas of the state as uncalled for, adding that workers’ salaries had been deposited in the bank.

Fuka who spoke to our correspondent on phone said there was no wisdom in embarking on strike, since government was doing everything within their reach

to ensure that workers were paid.

According to him, “I have seen no reason for the National Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) to embark on a strike since their money has been deposited in the bank. The local government received about N77 million last month, saying that after deduction they had about N44 million naira in the bank.”

He insisted that he would never borrow money to pay salary, and called on NULGE to call off the strike and resume work.

House investigates spectrum auctioning by NCC Henry Omunu Abuja

ÏÏÏ The House of Representatives, on Thursday, mandated its Committee on Telecommunications to investigate the proposed auctioning of 2.6GHz spectrum by the Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC).

by Rep. Diri Douye (PDPBayelsa), the House said that the proposed auctioning of the 2. 6 GHz spectrum would lead to a large-scale job loss in the telecommunications industry.

Moving the motion, Douye expressed concern that the fundamental rights of the current licence holders were not

taken into account when the bid by MTN was being considered, adding that while the auctioning may be necessary to meet up with the digital compliance, there was also a need to build confidence in all stakeholders.

The law-maker further declared that the NCC, the regulator of the telecommunication sector, may not have considered the

long term effects of job losses.

“If the regulator fails to carry the entire process through without taking cognisance of current spectrum operators and their interest, it will result in the loss of billions of Naira to the investors.

“It will also jeopardize the interest of banks and result in the loss of thousands of jobs”, he said.

According to him, employment generation and protection of business was a key component of the legislative agenda of the eight assembly.

The motion was referred to the relevant committee with a mandate to investigate and resolve all pending issues connected with the proposed spectrum auctioning.

ary Cahill believes Euro 2016 is wide open and does not think England should be overly concerned by their group-stage form.

Despite a win against Wales in Group B, draws against Russia and Slovakia meant Roy Hodgson’s men had to settle for second place in the section, behind Chris Coleman’s side.

That means England will play Iceland in the last 16 next Monday, with hosts France potential quarterfinal opponents if they can defeat the Republic of Ireland on Sunday.

Boateng was more positive when asked about his calf injury, telling reporters he will definitely face Slovakia in Lille.

INTERVIEW Nigeria’s Soccer Ambassador and the country’s foremost FIFA/NFF Football Players’ Agent, Friday Nwankwo Kujah has joined numerous stakeholders of the round leather game in mourning the demise of Coach Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu.

In this exclusive interview with Extra Time duo of ANDREW EKEJIUBA and VICTOR THOMPSON he speaks on the chances of Dream Team IV at the forthcoming 2016 Olympics in Rio and how he impacted positively to the career of many Nigerian players.

W

hat was your reaction when you heard about the demise of Stephen Keshi and Shuaibu Amodu?

The news came as a shocker to me because I’ve just returned back to the country from Paris on Tuesday, a day before the unfortunate demise of Keshi. Then I got a text from the Dream Team VI handler Samson Siasia after my arrival about the death of Keshi. I did not believe the incident initially because Keshi told me a day before his demise that he will be travelling to the United States of America to see his children, only to hear the sad news of his death.

When I got Siasia’s text I had to call Benin where Keshi was based to confirm it and behold it was true that Keshi was no more!

For Shuaibu Amodu, we were still working on a proposal that was still on his table about how to move the country’s football forward. I know the role I played before he got the appointment to lead the country to the Africa Cup of Nations in Mali in 2002. In fact it was a sad footballing weekend for me.

I have never been so saddened in my life, as I witnessed that weekend when the news of the duo was made known to me. It was a black weekend for me personally that those who can move the country’s football forward are now no more. We need to pray for God’s intervention so that things like this will never happen again to our football and nation.

Can you share with our readers the little you knew about Keshi’s rise as a player and as a coach?

Keshi was like a mentor to me. He was a true leader who wanted to achieve laurels and also eager to make the nation proud.

All Keshi’s ambition as a good leader did not just start when he began playing professional football, but he was so patriotic to Nigeria and demonstrated all these traits while growing up.

His achievements as a footballer and as a coach are huge such that it will be difficult for any other Nigerian to fill.

I think his hunger for success paved way for him. ‘The Big Boss’ was the second man after the Algerian coach to lift the AFCON trophy both as a player and a coach.

Keshi always wants to take responsibility by being in charge of things; beginning from when he played for New Nigeria Bank before going to Cote d’Ivoire and eventually moving to Belgium he was always a born winner.

I think if Keshi, Daniel Amokachi and Samson Siasia were to work together, Nigerian football would have been taken to the next level.

How best do you think both footballing icons should be immortalised by the NFF? For me, a stadium in their states should be named after them, both in Edo State and in Delta State respectively.

NFF should also award scholarship to their children that are still in school and they must not abandon their families they left behind, like what they did to the families of Mudashiru Lawal and Sam Okwaraji. These actions will spur those currently playing and serving the country to do more!

Keshi’s achievements in football are monumental and cannot be forgotten.

After what we saw at the Suwon Tournament where the Dream Team VI failed to live up to expectation, what changes do you think must be made to make the team rock-solid?

The Dream Team did not fail. That tournament was a preparatory ground for them. I trust Samson Siasia’s tactics because he knows what he is doing. Siasia wants to test the boys that will be able to take on and conquer the world at the Rio Olympics. I remembered very well that before we went for the Olympics in Atlanta 1996, in our last preparatory game, Togo came to Nigeria and defeated us 3 – 1 with all the likes Kanu Nwankwo, Sunday Oliseh and Taribo West in action for Nigeria; but we still went ahead to conquer the world.

You don’t assess a team with friendly games; let us wait for the tournament proper before we judge the team. Our focus should be on goal scoring and we need strikers that can deliver when called upon.

If you are allowed to pick the three over-aged players for the Dream Team VI, which players would you pick?

For me, I will go for Odion Ighalo because of his deft touches on and off the ball. Mikel Obi will also make my cut and lastly any other very good defender will be a plus to the team, so as to add experience to the back line.

The media was awash recently by the alleged report that Daniel Akpeyi, the goal keeper of

Chippa United will be in goal for the Dream Team at the Olympics, what can you make of that report?

I don’t see why a goalkeeper should be part of our over-age players. We are blessed with good goalkeepers who are under the age of 23.

There is nothing wrong if we try more than 20 goalkeepers under the age of 23 to know the best to represent us at the Olympics. I believe Ighalo, Alex Iwobi and John Mikel can lift our team if included in the squad.

The rate at which sport personalities take performance enhancing drugs is on the high side; what is your advice in this regard to Team Nigeria athletes going for the Olympics in Rio? Doping is not rampant in Nigeria. I am trying to put up a proposal to the NFF whereby our footballers will be tested and lectured on the implication of doping before the commencement of the football season.

I am also planning to organise a seminar whereby I will invite ex-footballers (both local and international) that played the game for more than 25 years who had clean records on doping to come and lecture our footballers on

that. I believe some players that are involved in this act of doping may not know the type of drug they should avoid. Some of them take these drugs ignorantly!

What are the chances of Dream Team IV clinching the Olympic soccer gold in Rio? I believe Siasia is building a team capable of clinching the soccer gold in Rio. I am not sure if we are going to win gold because at times the best team at the tourney fails to deliver when expectations are high.

I believe with prayers and God on our side we can achieve it by winning the soccer gold as we did at Atlanta’96.

Finally, can you share with us your experience as a FIFA licensed accredited players’ agent?

People think because you are a football players’ agent you make a lot of money, which is not true. Players owe me money! The first time I went to court was because of a client. I don’t owe anyone money, instead players are the ones owing me.

I’m yet to see a player that says, Kujah for your services and all you have done for me, take this.

That is why I think people should stop believing that football agents are in money without considering all they have to pass through.

As an agent, you finance all the trips of your client because you believe in future, you will definitely get your return. As a football agent all my travels have not been to bring containers into the country, but I visit more than six football clubs in Europe to see the clubs that suit my clients. I will forever remain grateful to the family of Daniel Amokachi for always being appreciative of my efforts.

My talent as a football agent is that I can easily spot good future players. I don’t gamble, but I can gamble on good players whenever I spot them.

edia reports have revealed that joint leading scorer of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) Afolabi Okiki has finally landed in Argentina.

Okiki, who has scored 13 goals in the current league season, has quit Sunshine Stars as they owe him several months’ wages and he now hopes to try his luck overseas.

He is expected to sign a short-term contract in the South American country before he moves on to Europe.

A top source said: “Okiki is now in Argentina. He will most likely sign a four-month contract after which he will be shipped out most likely to Europe.”

His representative is Argentine agent Marcelo Houseman, who at a time worked with the likes of Obinna Nsofor, Odion Ighalo and Solomon Okoronkwo.

Houseman farmed Nsofor in Brazil for some months before the striker headed back to Europe.

Just as the CBN sold dollars on the interbank market for the fourth day to ease dollar shortages after the new forex regime started on Monday, traders said.

The naira traded at N283 to the dollar as at noon on Thursday, on volumes of $76.8 million, which traders attributed to the apex bank’s intervention.

The CBN had on Monday floated the local currency, ending a 16 months peg on the naira to allow the currency trade freely on the interbank market, but traders say dollar liquidity was tight, leaving the central bank as the

main supplier of hard currency for the fourth day.

The naira was quoted within the range of N282-N284 to the dollar at the interbank market on Thursday, a range it has been trading at since the re-introduction of two-way quote after the Central Bank of Nigeria floated the naira.

Also, the local currency appreciated at the parallel market to N335 to the dollar as against N370 a dollar last week.

“As we approach month-end,

we expect the multinational oil companies to begin their monthend dollar sales to generate some naira. This should provide supply of dollars to the market in the coming days,” local unit of Citibank said in a note.

Meanwhile, due to the current economic downturn in the country, Fitch rating agency in its latest rating has downgraded Nigeria to ‘B+’; outlook stable.

Fitch, however, forecasted the nation’s Gross Domestic Products (GDP) growth to fall to

1.5 percent in 2016, down from 2.7percent in the preceding year.

It projected Nigeria’s general government fiscal deficit to grow by 4.2 percent in 2016, with expected current account deficit to widen to 3.3 percent of GDP in 2016, from 2.6 percent in 2015 The rating agency, forecasted that the depreciation of the Nigerian currency, the naira will increase debt and debt service burden, adding that inflation would end year at lower than 12 percent.

NCR approves certificates as collateral for graduates Joy Ekeke Nigerian graduates can now access loans from financial institutions using their certificates as collateral as stated by the National Collateral Registry, NCR. The Head of Research and Development, NCR, Dr. Musa Olasupo, disclosed this at a recent interactive forum in Lagos.

According to him, since most young business owners don’t possess fixed assets to secure start-up funds from banks, their certificates can serve as moveable assets to be registered by their credit institutions with the NCR as collateral.

He added that employers of labour could carry out background checks during recruitment on the

certificates that had been pledged as collateral in case of loan default.

Olasupo observed that young entrepreneurs as well as Small and Medium Enterprise owners were constrained by lack of capacity, lack of access to finance and poor infrastructure, adding that the Central Bank of Nigeria was ready to support them with funds.

He said, “We are looking beyond giving out credits to positioning credits to graduates’ critical infrastructure. The banks are not comfortable funding start-ups because it has been established that eight out every 10 start-ups in Nigeria die in the first two years.

It stated that a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in relation to the establishment and operation of the rice mill complex was recently signed between the three principal stakeholders, Lagos State Government, Kebbi State Government and San Carlos Nigeria Limited.

An industry source disclosed that that there are plans for a Chinese firm to be brought into the partnership, adding that Lagos and Kebbi States might soon extend their collaboration in agriculture to animal husbandry.

According to the source, the milling project, at least as far as rice is concerned, lays a vi-

tal plank for Lagos and Kebbi States’ ambitions to become food sufficient as well as diversify their economic base.

For the stakeholders, gains of the investment include a guaranteed return for the JV, assurance of private sector confidence in the business climate, and job and wealth creation for Nigerian citizens.

Industry watchers believe the project would equally help to boost the diversification of the Nigerian economy especially now that the federal government is working on strategies to develop other sectors as part of its strategy to reduce the country’s dependence on oil.

BoI explains EFCC investigations over management of cement fund Ïd ƕ ƇƑ Ɨ Ə Ɠ ƇƏ ƌ MÖƄ Ɛ MơƢêƾƄ ƈ ƇƈƒƆ ƕƆ Ə Stories by Charles Okonji The Bank of Industry (BoI) Wednesday, explained that investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the allegation of misapplied cement funds had since been resolved between the Development Finance Institution (DFI) and the Cement Technological Institute of Nigeria (CITN).

According to the acting Managing Director, BOI, Mr. Waheed Olagunju, both parties to the transaction have addressed the concerns raised with the new terms reached on how to manage the funds which have grown from N9 billion in 2011 to N13.2 billion as at last week Friday.

Indeed, BoI was appointed in 2009 to manage the fund that accrued from levies on imported cement for the development of Nigeria’s cement industry chaired by Aliko Dangote under the guise of CITN. Olagunju during a press briefing, said, “I called Dangote telling him about EFCC inviting us over the petition and he told me that he would let them know that all the issues have been resolved and when I visited him, he gave me a letter saying to EFCC that they have settled with BOI that there are no more issues between BOI and CITN and they submitted a letter to EFCC through his own office where he also gave me a copy of the letter, so we showed them copy which stated that the issues have been resolved.

It was a cordial and friendly interac-

tion we had. We are working together to ensure we succeed in building a very good country. So there is no rancour and no acrimony between and CTIN,” Olagunju said.

“When the funds were released since its inception, BOI granted loans to entrepreneurs in the cement value chain, specifically for investment in risk assets in the cement industry’s value chain. Between 2011 and 2015, the Federal Government transferred N9.6 billion to BoI based on earlier scheme as approved by the Federal Government.

“When the CTIN was later established, BOI was in 2013 asked to transfer the fund to CTIN’s account with a private commercial bank. A directive that was not carried out by the then management of the bank.

In late 2015 the CTIN petitioned the Presidency following which an investigative panel was established.

“However, BOI Management had since resolved the matter amicably with CTIN since late February 2016 during which it was agreed that an interest rate of eight per cent should be applied to the fund retroactively to previous releases based on which the fund grew to N12.3 billion as at December 2015. The management of the Bank had since February 2016 met and agreed with the Chairman of the Board of CTIN and President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote on further utilization of the fund, based on agreement by the two parties-BOI and CTIN.

LCCI launches e-commerce to boost trade between Nigeria, Russia The Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Tuesday launched an e-commerce platform to boost the volume of trade between the Nigerian entrepreneurs and their Russian counterparts In her opening remarks, Mrs Nike Akande, President, LCCI, stated at the launch which was tagged; RuNiTrade, in Lagos that the it would boost trade between the two countries.

NSE holds 55th AGM sets plans for EGM on Demutualisation The Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) at its 55th Annual General Meeting (AGM) agreed to step down the resolution to demutualise the Exchange, following the NSE Council’s proposal to have an Extra-Ordinary General Meeting (EGM) on the demutualisation to allow for more consultations with market operators.

The suggestion was supported by Emeka Madubuike, President of Association of Stock broking Houses of Nigeria and Mike Itegboje.

The speakers further urged the Council and Management of NSE to fast track the demutulaisation process and pick a date for the EGM The NSE had earlier assured stakeholders in the capital market of their commitments towards demutualization of the exchange in 2016.

Speaking at the event, the President of Council Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede disclosed that “in 2016 we will focus on demutualization of the Exchange for maximum efficiency in our operations and decision making processes, increase in our quoted asset classes to include exchange traded derivatives and monetization of our market services suite, as we explore untapped business opportunities to diversify and grow our income streams”.

The NSE President further explained that some of the benefits of demutualization include delivering greater returns to members, greater flexibility and access to global markets, a more flexibly governance structure fostering decisive actions in response to the rapid changes in the business environment, enhanced synergies with other stock exchanges, and increased access to resources for capital investments raised by way

of equity offering or private investments.

Equities market adds N790bn in 3 days as GSK lead gainers Afolabi Adesola Trading on the Nigerian Stock Exchange (NSE) continued its gaining spree on Thursday as blue chips stocks kept increasing in value.

All Share Index (ASI) of the Nigerian Bourse hit 31,000 points as it appreciated by 3.31 per cent to close at 31,071.25 basis points, to complement the 2.40 per cent appreciation recorded on Wednesday. With this feat, ASI Year-to-Date (YTD) returns stands at +8.48 per cent, while its one year return is at -2.09 per cent.

At the end of Thursday equities trading, market capitalisation added N321 billion to close at N10.7 trillion as against N10.4

trillion recorded at the end of Wednesday session.

However, market turnover closed negative as volume declined by 16.86 per cent against 1.60 per cent uptick recorded in the previous session, as investors traded 450.5 million shares.

On the other hand market breadth remained positive as 37 gainers were recorded against 12 losers, an improved performance when compared with previous day outlook of 34 gainers versus 17 losers.

Glaxo Smithkline Nigeria Plc led the gainers by 10.21 per cent for the third consecutive day, having improved it’s share value with N1.86 kobo to close at N20.07 kobo as against N18.21 kobo it traded.

On the other hand, NPF Microfinance Bank took the lead of the losers, as it’s stocks depreciated by 4.88 per cent to close at N1.17 kobo against N1.23 kobo it opened with.

Transnational Corporation Plc, United Bank for Africa Plc and Zenith Bank Plc were the most active to boost market turnover, while Nestlé Nigeria Plc and Zenith Bank Plc top market value list.

MRS leads the list of active stocks that recorded impressive volume spike as it traded 119,973 shares in 23 deals.

At the end of trading session on Thursday, 450.5 million shares worth N5.7 billion exchanged hands in 6,360 deals.

‘I like putting smiles on the faces of people’ Continued from L2 our area, in my polling booth and some other areas very close to me. We took a lot of things up by ourselves and spent our money to see that we propagate the ideas and objectives of the man and the man and it was so painful that the election was cancelled. But that was an opportunity for Nigeria to cross the Rubicon of unnecessary dichotomy. We would have been able to cross the dichotomies, the divisions, the privileges, the unnecessary discriminations and distinguishing factors that exist in Nigeria; factors of religion, ethnicity. All this have an opponent of Abiola, in his polling booth, Abiola defeated him there, in his state, Kano.

Christians voted for Abiola, it was a Muslim/ Muslim ticket, Abiola was a Muslim, Babangida was known as a Muslim, not withstanding, they did not even read all these things, it was not averred to.

You are a year old as a lawmaker, what have you been able to do for the people?

As a member of the house of Assembly and been tailored towards making the good of my people become better, as a community man, as a grass root man, as a man of the people as a man who lives with his people. Personal assistant, personal endowment, personal support of my people has always been part of me. So many things that we assist people for, even schools, institutions, markets; they need boreholes, they need generator, some of these things have been done, there are so many institutions and unions we have assisted so that they can survive this economic situation.

As a politician, what would you say was your challenging moment?

Every day is challenging but I see everything is challenging. Yoruba say: “you can be hungry alike but matters do not affect you alike. What is important to you may not be important to me; everybody has his own individual preferences. It is an opportunity to do better and do what you are supposed to do but what is important is that you must be courageous as a leader and you must be able to take decisions but make sure that the decisions you are taking are empirical, choices for the people, satisfy your conscience.

So, if for whatever reason you are no longer a legislator, will you go back to law?

Where do you hope to see the house in three years?

Our house is moving to greater heights by the grace of God because the speaker, Hon.
