Politics Page Three Æ s Editorial The coup in Burkina Faso

L

ast week Thursday, September 17, 2015, the world woke up to the rude announcement of a military coup in the West African country of Burkina Faso. The military putsch succeeded in overthrowing the transitional government headed by interim President Michel Kafano and his Prime Minister Isaac Zida, replacing them with General Gilbert Diendere as the country’s new strongman. Following this, there have been riots on the streets by those protesting against the anomaly, leading to the needless deaths of innocent citizens. Reports say that in addition to seizing political power, the soldiers raided the offices of Ouagadougou’s Radio Omega, setting them ablaze.

The junta calling themselves the National Counsel for Democracy imposed a dusk to dawn curfew, with all flights in and out of the country cancelled.

Expectedly, the international community including Nigeria has condemned this rape of democracy, even as they called on the putschists to immediately restore the overthrown executive back to power.

We are totally in support of this call and all other measures to bring back normalcy and democratic governance in Burkina Faso. More odious is that a small praetorian presidential guard and not the army carried out the coup. The coup was not only uncalled for, it was a more telling betrayal by those who should be responsible for protecting their bosses. Incidentally, the putsch revealed the simmering rivalry and discord between the national army and the presidential guards established by the immediate past President, Blaise Compaoré, for his personal protection.

Indeed, another painful aspect of the coup was the bravery and determination of the Burkinabé people to kick out Compaoré from power at serious risks to their own lives. In defending their action, the coup leaders cited marginalisation of politicians from the electoral process.

Nevertheless, observers believe the

main grouse was the decision by the transitional authorities that former members of the Compaoré regime and political parties who supported the former president’s attempt at tenure elongation be stopped from taking part in future elections. Whatever the reasons for the coup, it should not be allowed to stand, as doing so would bring the African continent back to dark days of military dictatorships when rule by coercion and force was order of the day.

Indeed, Africa needs respite from these marauding hordes in military uniform that believe power must flow from barrels of the gun.

That is why we welcome the intervention of ECOWAS, the United Nations and African Union delegation led by Presidents Macky Sall of Senegal and Boni Yayi of Benin to broker solution to the imbroglio. We recall that Burkina Faso had been preparing for general elections scheduled for October 11, in order to restore democracy following last year’s overthrow of long-term leader Compaoré when the 1,200-member unit struck. African leaders must use every means possible to sack the coupists, including the use of force to end their reign of impunity.

Military coups have become an aberration and this is why their intervention in politics no longer enjoys the support of the people and the international community. There must be concerted efforts by all stakeholders to sensitise soldiers especially in the West African sub region on the futility of military rule when democratic governance has become the rallying call all over the world. Africa should work towards getting out of the zone of turmoil, characterised by poverty, repression and war - in which it has existed all along - into zone of peace, in which can be found peaceful, democratic and wealthy nations. Therefore we insist that the coup plotters in Burkina Faso climb down from their high horses and see their professional duty as that of protecting their country from external aggression and not substituting democratic rule with commands from the barracks.

took a trip to far away France for our dear president to inform us of the real reasons for his delay in naming his cabinet.

Not a few Nigerians have expressed their frustrations at President Muhammadu Buhari’s not constituting a cabinet.

The likes of Olisa Metuh, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s Publicity Secretary, an Afenifere, had voiced objections to the style of the new government especially not putting in place a cabinet which they believed would help galvanise the nation into greatness.

In Metuh’s view, Buhari’s delay in constituting a cabinet “has brought government business in ministries, departments and agencies to a dangerous standstill with coordination of important policies vested on ministers and the SGF now in tatters while the system drifts.”

Pa Reuben Fasoranti was once quoted as saying, “President Buhari was running a one-man show.

But the president, during an interview with France 24 TV host, François Picard, on Wednesday, voiced his opinion on the relevance, or otherwise, of ministers. He stunned the nation when he described ministers as mere noise makers.

As far as he was concerned, the real work at ministries are carried out by the technocrats in those ministries and not the card-carrying political appointees. The President apparently sees mounting calls for constituting a cabinet as not out of love for the country, but from ethnic jingoists seeking to see their kinsmen in government.

Of course, the president had been there before and actually knows how these things work.

Of course, some ministers had helped in reshaping government policies, but many of them had not lived above board, but performed below par; they had been sheer round pegs in square holes.

FAAN, Immigration, others at war over On-Duty-Card Tobi Dada

ÏÏÏActivities at the Mur-

tala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, were grounded on Tuesday, over the refusal of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), to allow other security agencies working at the terminal access to the restricted areas of the airport.

Aviation Security (AVSEC) of FAAN, had demanded for On-Duty-Cards (ODCs) of all security personnel attached to the airport, discovered that most of the personnel were using expired ODC to access the restricted areas of the airport, which prompted it to deny them access to the terminal.

Pandemonium, however, broke out when a staff of

Nigerian Immigration service (NIS), Mr. C.S.I. Obasi, allegedly became violent and attacked an AVSEC officer. The incident happened around 8:30 in the morning and lasted for almost two hours. During the crisis, processing of the outbound and inbound passengers were discontinued, a situation, which led to several of the passengers being stranded, while airlines that were scheduled to airlift travelers could not do so as arranged.

Apart from immigration personnel affected by the restriction, other security agencies and aviation parastatals, including Department of State Security Service (DSS), Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA),

Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), and others were also denied entrance to the restricted areas while the crisis lasted.

But, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NIS, Airport Command, Mr. Adebola Adetula denied the allegation that its officer assaulted AVSEC staff on duty because of the issue.

Adetula, in an interview with our correspondent, debunked the claim that its officers assaulted AVSEC, rather he said the AVSEC officers attacked its personnel, which led to blood oozing out from his left eye.

He explained that Obasi had arrived the airport and proceeded to the E-arrival of the airport to commence

his legitimate duty, but was prevented from carrying out his duty by AVSEC, based on the allegation that his DDC had expired.

He added that despite all the entreaties to AVSEC to allow him in and process the passengers, he was refused and eventually attacked by the AVSEC officers at the arrival hall.

He said, “The attacked officer just did surgery on that part of the eyes and it was there he was slapped

by AVSEC officers on duty and his glasses broken.

We had to complain to the Comptroller, Airport Command, Mrs. Chizoba Dibi, who in turn called the Chief Security Officer at the airport, who said the ODC had expired and ready for collection.

Imo govt concessions 29 parastatals, 38 health facilities ÏÏÏImo State government

has finally concessioned more than 29 parastatals and 38 health facilities, including all the general hospitals in the state to inject life and make them effective and productive in order to achieve the aims of establishing them.

The state government also suspended some Permanent Secretaries, Directors of Accounts and few other officials, who were indicted by the report of the recent verification and audit exercise carried out in the state.

Most of these parastatals and health facilities, according to government, have continued to enjoy the government’s “huge monthly subventions without any

thing to show for such cash investments.

“Even those of them expected to earn revenue by virtue of their status to assist in taking care of themselves, have not been forthcoming and they have not also been functioning up to the responsibilities behind their existence,” a statement signed by Sam Onwuemeodo, Chief Press Secretary to the Governor said.

Some of the parastatals listed for concessioning are those of Imo Newspapers, Imo Orientation Agency, NEPAD, Imo ADP, Agriculture Loans Board, Water Corporation, PFMU and PSGRDP, Consumer Protection Council, Imo State Council for Arts and

Culture, Imo State Sports Council, Imo State Tourism Board, Imo State Zoological Garden, Imo State Library Board, Imo Job Centre and Imo State Investment Promotion Agency.

Others are the State Directorate for Employment, Okigwe Cattle Market, Imo Livestock, Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources Shop, Niger-Delta Bureau, Poverty Alleviation Bureau, IWADA, Bureau for Public Procurement and Price Intelligence, ENTRACO, Imo Marketing Company, Imo Blue Lake Oguta and Imo Essential Drug.

Health facilities the government has also listed to concession their managements are, the General Hos-

pitals and Health Centres in the 27 Local Government Areas in the state, including the General Hospitals at Aboh Mbaise, Ngor Okpala, Ihitte Uboma, Okigwe, Arondizogu, Mberi, Awo Omama, Oguta, Ogwa, Ohaji Egbema and the Specialist Hospital, Umugwuma.

Saraki said this in a statement tilted “As I Appear before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT)”.

In the statement which he personally signed on Tuesday night, Saraki noted that his appearance before the CCT was a demonstration of his believe in rule of law and respect for the judiciary.

He said: “Today, I appeared before the Code of Conduct Tribunal for the commencement of my trial in a case concerning the asset declaration form I filled in 2003 after I have explored the opportunity to defend my fundamental human rights

in other courts.

“My appearance in court today once again demonstrates my belief in the rule of law and respect for the judiciary of our country.

“As I stated while taking the plea in the case, I reiterate my belief that the only reason while I am going through this trial is because I am Senate President. If I were to be just a Senator, I doubt if anybody will be interested in the asset declaration form I filled over twelve years ago.

“This belief stems from the fact that Section 3 (d) of the Code of Conduct Bureau and Tribunal Act provides that If there is a breach or non-compliance with any section of the law, the person involved should be given the opportunity to either admit

or deny and that in the case of a written admission, no reference to the Tribunal shall be necessary. So, if the CCB had followed the guidelines, procedure or the due process provided in its own law, we won’t be having this trial.

“It is my humble opinion that this case is a vivid example that there is still flagrant disregard for due process in our polity. This trial is not only being observed by Nigerians alone, the international community is watching because Nigeria is a key

member of this community.

So, the executive, legislature and judiciary should do the right thing that will truly demonstrate that we have imbibed the spirit of positive change.

“It is however necessary for me to thank my colleagues in the Senate for the solid support and solidarity they demonstrated for me. I also thank my counsel for the brilliance they have shown in presenting our case and the supporters who were present in the Tribunal in their hundreds. I want to as-

sure you that I am innocent of all the charges and will clear my name in due course.

Meanwhile, the CCT on Tuesday was told that Saraki made an anticipatory false asset declaration in 2003 of his property at Ikoyi Lagos when in fact the said property was sold to him by the former Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mallam Nasir el-Rufai in 2007.

Federal Government prosecutor, Rotimi Jacob (SAN), who disclosed this on Tuesday while stating the nature of breaches committed by

Senator Saraki as the governor of Kwara State, said he will call only five witnesses to prove the 13 count charges levelled against the Senate President.

He said that Saraki made four asset declarations in 2003, 2007 and 2011 in which he concealed a number of his property located in Abuja and Lagos including a foreign bank account in the United Kingdom.

All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primaries in Bayelsa State finally ended on Tuesday evening with former governor of the state, Chief Timipre Sylva, emerging the winner.

His emergence was however not without drama as the whereabouts of the chairman of the electoral committee and Governor of Edo State, Adam Oshiomhole, was still unknown as at press time.

However, announcing the result, a member of the committee, Hon. Nelson Alakpa said Chief Timipre Sylva polled a total of 726 votes out of 774 votes cast, noting that the election was far free and fair.

Assistant Inspector General of Police, Mr. Olufemi Adenaike, who led the security team to the primaries, described the election as one of the most transparent elections in the country, adding that though “we started very late, it all went well and successful. You can attest to it because nobody was beaten, maimed or intimidated.

Even under the rain, the people voted massively and anyone that is not satisfied should protest it.”

Meanwhile, real drama played out earlier in Yenogoa, the state capital, venue of the election, as Gov. Oshiomhole, absconded hours after protest by aspirants in the election who claimed the process was characterized by frayed nerves, violence, intimidation and alleged hijack of electoral processes.

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole, was however perplexed and held hostage by irate party supporters who invaded the Samson Siasia Stadium venue of the primaries and insisted that the abandoned accreditation of delegates be completed and election conducted.

The Governorship aspirants included the former Managing Director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Chief Timi Alaibe, the former Transport aide to Governor Dickson, Ebitimi Angbare, Bayelsa Central Senatorial flag bearer of the APC, Hon. Preye Aganaba and Mrs. Charity Vedelego.

The Governorship primary, which was held amidst heavy security, was characterized by tension and violence. Most of the Anti-Sylva delegates were intimidated and attacked by suspected loyalists of Chief Timipre Sylva.

While justifying the rationale behind the AFAN’s action, Dasaolu further stated that whatever that affected Chief Falae in his farm could also affect any of the farmers in the geo-political zone,

hence, the readiness of his association to mobilise all its members to go all out in search of Falae.

He also appealed to the Fulani farmers who have been living peacefully with their co-host communities across the South West to join hands with AFAN in search of Falae.

The coordinator of the South West farmers also called on security agencies to as a matter of urgency, live up to expectation and redeem their image by ensuring that Falae is released unconditionally and unhurt.

“AFAN is not taking it lightly with the abductors: it is absurd, unacceptable. Our utmost interest is that Chief Olu Falae should be released unhurt and unconditionally,”

Dasaolu said.

Meanwhile, abductors of former SGF have reduced the ransom demanded for his release from N100 million to N90 million, an aide to the politician has said.

The aide, who pleaded anonymity said on Tuesday in Akure, the Ondo State capital, that the abductors called the family on Monday night and agreed that they could bring N90 million if they could not afford N100 million demanded.

The source, however, said the family has only been able to raise N2 million.

The septuagenarian was kidnapped in his farm on Monday by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen who wounded some of his workers in the process.

allegedly stealing the sum of N1.8million belonging to customers, a bank transaction officer, Mr. Hammed Mosuro 29, was, on Tuesday, docked before an Igbosere Magistrate Court Mosuro is facing a sixcount charge, bordering on conspiracy stealing, fraud and conversion of customers’ money into personal use, levelled against him by the police.

The defendant, who resides at 90, Muler Road, Iyana Ipaja, Lagos, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The prosecutor Corporal Cyriacus Osuji, told the court that the defendant

and others still at large committed the alleged offence between June and July 2015.

He said that the incident took place at the Apongbon branchof a bank, on Lagos Island.

Osuji alleged that on July 3, 2015 the defendant stole the sum N400, 000, which was deposited by a customer of the bank – G. I distribution Limited – and converted same to his personal use.

He also alleged that on 22 June 2015, at the bank’s premises, Mosuro stole the sum of N650, 000, which was deposited with the bank by a customer: Adebukola and Sons.

Muhammadu Buhari will leave Nigeria for New York, on Thursday, for a series of meetings and interactions with notable world leaders within and on the sidelines of the main events of the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.

This was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, in Abuja.

Buhari, he said, would engage in talks, deliberations and interactions with the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, Mr. Ban Ki-moon, President Barack Obama of the United States, President Francois Hollande of

France, Prime Minister David Cameron of Britain, Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany, President Vladmir Putin of Russia, President Xi Jinping of China, Prime Minister Narenda Modi of India, among others.

The deliberations and talks would centre on domestic developmental issues, bilateral relations, the war against terrorism, countering extremism, the enhancement of global security, peace-keeping operations, climate change and the adoption of a post-2015 global development agenda, Adesina said.

Buhari who will be accompanied by the Governors of Sokoto, Kaduna and Niger states, the National

Security Adviser and the Permanent Secretaries in the Federal Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Defence, Finance, Health, Industry, Trade and Investment, will deliver Nigeria’s statement to the 70th Session of the United Nations General Assembly on Monday, September 28.

Adesina added that Buhari was also scheduled to address the World Leaders Summit on Violent Extremism to which he was personally invited by Mr. Ban Ki-moon during the Secretary-Generalss recent visit to Nigeria.

While in New York, Buhari is also expected attend a meeting of the African Union’s Peace and Security Council, a high-level round-

table on South-South Co-operation, organised by President Xi Jinping of China and the United Nations, and participate in the launch of an updated global health strategy for women and children.

He is also scheduled to meet with former President Bill Clinton of the United States, Mr. Bill Gates of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, which is assisting Nigeria in several areas including polio eradication.

Govt agencies to collaborate in tackling smuggling- Osinbajo ÏÏÏVice-President

Yemi Osinbajo, onTuesday, said that government would explore ways to ensure that relevant agencies – including the National Boundary Commission, collaborate and coordinated effectively to deal with smuggling activities along the borders of Nigeria and its neighbouring countries.

While briefing commission, Osinbajo indicated that the body, the Nigeria Customs and the Immigration authorities could work together to tackle the problem of smuggling, adding that it would be useful identifying actual points where

smuggling was taking place.

While appreciating the work and the detailed presentation of the Commission, the Vice- President, who is the Chairman of the Commission’s Board, expressed the desire to see more collaboration among relevant government agencies and called for a plan in that direction.

Earlier in his briefing, Director General of the commission M. B. Ahmad said the National Boundary Commission functions included intervening and dealing with any boundary dispute that may arise between Nigeria and any of

her neighbours with a view to settling it.

According to him, the Commission also intervenes, determines and deals with boundary dispute that may arise among states, local government areas or communities in the federation with a view to settling them.

He said the Commission was in-charge of the Nigeria-Niger Joint Commission (NNJC); NigeriaBenin Joint Commission (NBJC); Nigeria-Benin Joint Technical Committee on Delimitation; CameroonNigeria Mixed Commission (CNMC); Lake Chad Basin

Commission (LCBC) and the ECOWAS/Cross River Initiatives (CBI) Ahmad noted that the Commission had intervened in many internal boundary disputes in the country including states like Jigawa/ Kano, Kaduna/Kano, Kaduna/Katsina, Kaduna/ Plateau and other areas in country.

He cited the challenges faced by the Commission to include funding, straddling settlements, re-establishment of destroyed/missing boundary pillars as well as demographic movements with the emergence of new settlements, among others.

Saraki: Artful dodger ends up in cul-de-sac Akinjide Akintola On Wednesday 12 December, 2007, former Governor James Ibori of Delta State was arrested at the Kwara State Government Lodge in Abuja where he was hiding from the operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) who have been trailing him over allegations of money laundering.

Before he was finally arrested, he had evaded arrest by moving around in Abuja in convoy of some of his former colleagues like former governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State and Bukola Saraki of Kwara, in whose Abuja lodge, Ibori was finally nabbed by men of the EFCC who stormed the place.

Saraki was then the chairman of the prestigious Nigerian Governors Forum (NGF). He had always had his way. He was a lord whose word was law.

If anybody doubts this, just ask his sister, Senator Gbemi Saraki. I would have suggested the doubting Thomas to ask their father, the Oloye himself, Senator Abubakar Olusola Saraki, but he has since joined his ancestors.

The story has it that the old man who control over the politics of Kwara for decades and brought Senator Bukola from nowhere to be governor in 2003 had planned that Gbemi would succeed her brother as governor in 2011. The CONTINUED ON PAGE 9

two of them were supposed to do a sort of exchange with Gbemi leaving the Senate for Bukola.

But while Gbemi left the Senate for his brother as planned, Bukola had other plans. He brought in Abdulfath Ahmed to succeed him and rejected his father’s plan to have Gbemi become governor after him.

The old man who underestimated his son’s new enormous powers fielded Gbemi on another platform only for them to lose their deposit to the superior firepower of Bukola. Since that disgraceful outing, the old man could not live with the shame.

The rest is history.

Of course, it was the same way he snatched the Senate Presidency from the All Progressives Congress (APC) leadership, who despite their political acumen also underestimated the desperate power monger who could not brook any opposition from any quarters but would crush. The rigmarole, the fraud of the Senate sitting were all plans and well executed by the strategist.

This was also what happened to Ibrahim Larmorde, the Tsar of the anti-corruption war, for daring to invite his wife, Toyin for questioning over alleged money laundering allegations.

You can then understand the fear and apprehension of such a person being asked to face trial, to be docked for alleged sins of the past. This was a person who had tasted power and knew how to manipulate power to suit one’s purpose.

But he never knew that there was always a time for everything.

It came for him at last and when he knew he had nowhere to run to again, he finally succumbed.

But he had lost all dignity after having to be issued a warrant for his arrest. He even tried to stop his arraignment, which would have been a bad omen and sign that some people were above the law; even when he has no immunity, despite being the number three citizen of the country, like he gleefully announced in the dock.

Had he accepted his fate and not try to influence his trial, his picture in the dock would have elicited sympathy instead of the derision he now enjoys.

The reluctant Saraki who had attempted to thwart all efforts by the tribunal to ‘embarrass’ him eventually succumbed after spirited defensive arguments put up by his counsel, J.B. Daudu (SAN) to prevent his being docked failed to hold water.

Umar, the trial tribunal Chairman who was looking directly at Saraki from his vantage post had called up Saraki’s case at exactly 10:32am by saying that, “Where is the prosecution, is the accused person here?”

Daudu insisted that there was no need to dock his client while relying on an Appeal Court decided case law in Igbeke vs FRN, 2015, 3 NWLR. Eventually, Saraki entered the dock and pleaded not guilty to the 13-count criminal charge that was preferred against him by the federal government, stressing that, “I‘m Nigeria’s Senate President and I‘m puzzled why I am being compelled. I am not guilty.”

Thereafter, the Tribunal granted him bail on self-recognition and adjourned sitting to October 21, 2015 for the commencement of

the NLC leadership.

However, that has now ended as INEC has given the Labour Party its Certificate of Registration to the national chairman of the party, Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam.

A Certified True Copy of the CoR, dated May 25 2005 and signed by former chairman of the commission, Sir Abel Guobadia, was obtained in Abuja.

The Director of Voter Education and Publicity in INEC, Mr. Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, disclosed following the CoR and letter from INEC giving recognition to the leadership of Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam.

He said, “The LP leadership under A.A. Salam and Kayode Ajulo has been attending all meetings convened by INEC; I am not aware that there is any controversy in LP; you’re the one telling me. You said you have a letter and the letter speaks for itself. Is there anybody dragging leadership with them?

“Moreover the fact that somebody is holding a CoR doesn’t mean registration of that party.

Moreover, the NLC is not a political party, but a labour union and a labour union cannot be a party. If you look at the constitution, only registered political parties can canvass for votes

Irked by Jacobs submission, Saraki’s counsel, Joseph Daudu said, “With profound respect to the chairman and members of this tribunal, I agree with my learned brother that we should enter appearances first. was a student at College of Education. I started I started my musical career in 1999. Though I started on a very rough note, but I thank God today, my musical career has gotten a serious boost. I started partaking in politics since my school days at the College of Education. I was elected as the Vice President of Music Department from Part two to three. Again, I was elected the President of the same department, same year I was elected the Director of Social, Students Union, of the institution. My track record are there as an active politician during

my school days. As God will have it, I came out for the election into the Ekiti State House of Assembly in 2014, to contest as member representing Ijero constituency, and I won.

My constituency comprises of Ijero, Ikoro, Ijurin, Iloro, Odo Owa, Ekameta and Ekamarun.

word today that Fayose made me. When I came across Fayose in 2003, he contributed a lot to my musical career. He brought me up. In terms of entertainment, Fayose invested so much in me; he did everything possible to boost my musical career.

At the same time, he became interested and decided to establish me politically. So, both ways, he has been my pillar, be has always been there for me.

How did you meet Fayose?

The Bible says: ‘The gift of a Man will make him to stand before the kings and sit with the Prince’. I came across Fayose while playing music. When Fayose saw me, he studied me and after studying my background discovered that this guy will be a loyal person to him. He believed in me. He discovered that I am a very talented musician, and he believed that if he could develop this guy, he would be a good politician, so he decided to invest in me and launch me into politics proper and here am I am today as one of his disciples.

What have been your major challenges in life?

Ekundayo Being a musician is not an easy task; you need to have a strong backbone. When we started, I did not have anything, it was very difficult then, even to get a speaker to use for my outing then was a serious problem.

We will have to run up and down to get money to rent speakers and other musical instruments that we will use. And how much were they paying us then for a show? It was so small; in fact, a

lot of us offered services free of charge just to gain recognition in the society. So, it has been so challenging getting to where I am today, but I thank God. All what I did then I have started getting the rewards now. And politically, to being a politician is not easy. Is it the monetary aspect that you will talk about or the consultancy aspect? I want to tell you that politics has two sides, the negative and the

positive sides. Because a lot of people who contested alongside with me, they could not even see the light of day at the primary not to talk of the real election, and that is after they had spent a lot of money. So I enjoy the grace of God to be able to pass through that hurdle of primaries. In my own constituency, I went through series of rigorous

Following the outcry that followed his botched attempt to secure Appeal court’s nod to stop his trial with the attendant failure of the Federal High Court to grant him same, Saraki said on Monday that he would appear at the CCT today to answer to issues raised by the CCB. Speaking with reporters Saraki, who noted that he was prepared to submit himself to due process of the law on any issue concerning him said that he also believes that he has an inalienable right to resort to the same judiciary for protection when he feels his fundamental rights are about to be infringed upon adding that, “I have nothing to hide”.

Asked if he would appear at the CCT, Senator Saraki said: “Well, with the ruling of the Appeal Court, I think based on legal advice we have exercised our right and being a law abiding citizen, the directive of the CCB is saying that one should be there tomorrow. I will be there. I have nothing to hide. One was exercising his own right both at the Federal High Court and the Court of Appeal. So we will be there.”

primary conditions. And in the main general election, it was so challenging, starting from the money aspect and other problems but I thank God that I was able to scale through. So, it has been so challenging getting to where I am.

So, what will you say is your profession?

I don’t want to take politics as a profession, because if you take politics as your full time business and after four years, if your political party is longer in power, your may become frustrated. Where I am today, loyalty to Fayose got me there and once you don’t have any job to go back to, you can do anything to survive. So you may no longer be loyal, the next thing, you will be running from one party to another, and from one leader to another just to survive. But as I am today, if at the end of my four years, our political party is no longer in power, I will continue with my music profession fully, and I will not have any cause to betray my benefactor for what I will eat. And if we are fortunate to still be in power then, all things being equal, life goes on.

So music is a noble profession.

In the whole of the House of Assembly, I am the only person that is proud of my profession, I say it everywhere even in hallowed chambers. When I want to introduce myself, or when I am talking about my nomenclature, I will say, I, Honourable Akinleye Ekundayo, the only and the number one musician to be elected to hold an elective position throughout Nigeria. A lot of more popular stars have tried it but they did not make it. I am not mocking them, even our own king, Alhaji Wasiu Ayinde has tried it in Lagos; he did not get the ticket. Another very famous Musician from Ogun State, 9Nice tried it, but here I am, as a local star I got the ticket. A number of musicians tried to be elected into the House of Assembly throughout the whole federation. So, I have chosen music to be my profession, I can’t leave it. Recently, I launched my newly acquired set of instruments with truck and people were amazed that this guy could still have time for music. I don’t see politics as all in all; no, music is my talent and even God will query me if I fail to do it; God will ask me, ‘how well did you use your talent’?

Apart from that, music is the only talent that when you get to heaven, you still have to use it.

So, I will not shy away from the

Do you still perform at functions even now as an Honourable member?

Yea! Very well.

Your next level of aspiration?

I want to be developing in terms of music; I want to be moving higher everyday in my music career. Because music is far from getting a new set of instrument and believing that you are on top of it all. No, Music is developing everyday with new innovations and you have to keep on moving with it. Though, I have just acquired a new set of instruments, I still want to move higher. Recently, when I played alongside Evangelist Ebenezer Obey at Idirioko festival in Ado Ekiti, it was my newly acquired set of instrument that gave me confidence to face him at the show, but I was amazed seeing the kind of instruments he brought to the show. So, this is the kind of things I am talking about; I want people to talk about me that when you are talking about the best musical instrument in Nigeria, you will say Hon Akinleye is number one, and even in terms of entertainment industry in Nigeria, I want to be mentioned as number one; I want to be at the top,

You said Fayose made you, have you ever invested in or made anyone?

I am on it, I want to be mentioned as someone who has made persons and we have started and we are on it. I want people to say like I am saying now that I was made through Hon. Akinleye.

Your happiest day in life?

Because it is my music career that got me connected to Fayose before he could discover me and then develop me to make me what I am, so my happiest day in life was when I was sworn in

as the number one musician to be elected into the state House of Assembly throughout out the whole nation. And not just an ordinary member in this house of Assembly but also a Principal officer, the Deputy Chief whip. So, whenever I remember this day, I am always happy and thanking God because there are so many people who were better than me even in the music industry who could not get it but I got it through the grace of God. Presently, do you hold any office or position in Ekiti as a musician?

Presently, I just received a

letter from the Association of Juju Musician of Nigeria, Ekiti State chapter which I belong to, appointing me as their Special Adviser.

You always put on white, what is the secret behind it?

No secret, that is just my identity. I want to be known as a stainless person who does not have any stain. You know that white does not absolve stain, and you can not be wearing white and be dirty. I want to be recognised, I want to be different from many people anywhere and at any time as somebody who is clean, bright, and stainless both inwardly and outwardly.

Your message to the people?

I have two messages for our people, especially our youths: they should not depend solely on politics, some of us when we get into politics we forget about what we were doing before, our our profession.

The danger there is you might be frustrated and switch to another boss, and that is disloyalty. I told you loyalty got me to this level, so that is why it is not good to abandon the profession of which you were known with. I was a teacher for 12 years before I joined politics and I was playing my music alongside. Even up till now, I’m combining the two as a musician and a legislator. So they should please face their job and take politics as part time job like I do. Secondly, our people should endure; endurance brought me to this present level; our youths should endure and should not be looking for short cut to success.

If you go through shortcut, you will not be able to manage the success when it comes. And particularly no matter what comes, no matter what happens, it pays to be loyal to any political father or boss you choose for yourself.

“The convention elected a new NEC with Alhaji Abdulkadir Abdulsalam and Kayode Ajulo as national chairman and national secretary respectively. In accordance with Article 15(1) of the LP constitution, 2009, the elected NEC has a tenure of four years.”

Burkina Faso: ECOWAS leaders demand reinstatement of Kafando, Zida Egena Egena Abuja

African political leaders on Tuesday insisted that Burkina Faso’s interim leader, Mr. Michel Kafando and Prime Minister, Isaac Zida, be immediately restated unconditionally.

The duo were sacked last

week in a military coup.

The leaders in an extraordinary summit in Abuja, Nigeria, under the aegis of Authorities of Heads of States and Governments of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) also resolved that all actions on the dissolution of the Presidential Guard be

put on hold and the status quo be maintained.

The summit also suggested that the elections earlier scheduled for October 11 be shifted to November, 21 to, among other things, allow for a cooling of frayed nerves and pave the way for a free, fair and credible elections.

The summit which was

spearheaded by Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari was called essentially to discuss the current political crisis in Burkina Faso following a visit by a delegation from the ECOWAS to the country on Thursday, last week, to brief him on the situation in the troubled state.

In his welcome remarks,

Buhari described the development in Burkina Faso as far below the democratic expectations, noting that efforts being made so far were to correct the deficiencies.

His words: “The recent developments in our sister country, Burkina Faso, run contrary to our expectations and the efforts so far deployed towards the restoration of constitutional order and democracy by ECOWAS, the African Union (AU), the United Nations (UN) and our international development partners.

“The commitment of the

transitional administration of Michel Kafando to the implementation of the programme mandate of the transitional charter has equally been commended by the international community.

Saraki, who had unsuccessfully tried to use the courts to invade arraignment, pleaded “not guilty” to each of the charges.

The tribunal granted bail to Saraki on self- recognition and vacated the bench warrant it issued on Monday for his arrest based on the fact that he reported to the tribunal himself.

Saraki arrived the tribunal premises at 9:32 a.m., accompanied by “about 50 senators and some members of the House of Representatives”.

Some of the senators in court were Theodore Orji, Sam Egwu, Ike Ekwerema-

du, Shaba Lafiaji, Aliyu Wamakko, Rafiu Ibrahim, Tayo Alasoadura, Hamma Misau, Samuel Anyanwu, Sabi Aliyu Abdullahi, among others.

But Saraki initially refused to enter inside the accused box to take his plea until the tribunal chairman, Danladi Umar, gave a ruling compelling him to take his position in the accused box and he complied at about 11: 24 am.

While in the dock, the Senate president before taking his plea, said he was been prosecuted because of his position as a Senate President.

In addition, he protested the steps taken by the Code of Conduct Bureau that charged him without first inviting him for clarification on his asset declaration as required by the Act establishing the Bureau.

Speaking from the dock,

Saraki said: “I am a firm believer of the rule of law.

I have come here to subject myself before this tribunal.

I strongly believe that I am here because I am the Senate President”.

Proceedings which kicked started at 10:32am due to power failure commenced on a dramatic note with the accused person, refusing to mount the dock.

Following Saraki’s refusal to stand up as his case was mentioned, the tribunal Chairman, Justice Umar, demanded that he should leave his seat and enter inside the dock.

Sandwiched by his colleagues and friends inside the court, the Senate President refused to move from his seat.

Wondering what was going on, the tribunal Chairman who was looking at

Saraki’s direction queried “Where is the prosecution, is the accused person here?”

Responding, the prosecution counsel, Mr. Rotimi Jacobs, SAN, said: “My Lord, I cannot see him. I think the first thing is for him to enter the dock first, then we will announce our appearances. After which the charge will be read to him”.

But Saraki’s counsel, Joseph Daudu, SAN, leading five other Senior Advocates of Nigeria submitted: “With profound respect to the chairman and members of this tribunal, I agree with my learned brother that we should enter appearances first. The order of this tribunal was that the accused should be produced today. It was not for him to enter his plea. The case was earlier adjourned for mention”.

Monetary Policy Committee of the Central Bank of Nigeria has called for proactive measures to avert a looming economic recession in 2016 after its meeting on 21st and 22nd September, 2015.

The CBN also sought for urgent steps to be taken to ease liquidity conditions in the markets, stressing that liquidity withdrawals following the implementation of the TSA, elongation of the tenure of state government loans as well as loans to the oil and gas sectors could aggravate liquidity conditions in banks and impair their financial intermediation role, thus affecting economic growth.

According to the committee, “Having seen two consecutive quarters of slow growth, the Committee recognized that the economy could slip into recession in 2016 if proactive steps were not taken to revive growth in key sectors of the economy.”

Contrary to expectations that the CBN would give in to pressures to devalue the naira, the apex body chose to maintain the current rate of the local currency.

The Committee noted that the initial market reaction to the decision by JP Morgan to exclude the country from its Government Bond Index for Emerging Economies (GBI-

EM) had largely dissipated as yields soon adjusted to their pre-announcement levels’, adding that there may be second round effects over the next two months as the economy adjusts to that decision.

The Committee reiterated its unwavering commitment to naira exchange rate stability despite the pressures.

Mindful of the possibility of diversion of any extra liquidity to the foreign exchange market, the Committee urged the Bank to closely monitor the nature and sources of demand pressure in the foreign exchange market to ensure that funds were not diverted to demand for foreign exchange but applied to specific growth- enhancing asset creation lending by banks.

Overall, the Committee expressed optimism that business confidence would continue to improve as the Government continues to unfold its economic plans.

It further noted that sectors such as agriculture and MSMEs were sectors for rapid generation of productive employment and wealth creation, and must therefore, be painstakingly encouraged.

The Committee considered that the Bank and deposit money banks, must strive to reverse the slowing GDP trajectory by actively stepping up their efforts in catalysing the economy with substantial new loans to the target sectors earlier highlighted.

European ministers discuss migrant quota plan

Union interior ministers are meeting in Brussels to discuss a controversial quota plan to distribute 120,000 migrants throughout the 28-nation bloc, but several countries remain opposed.

ing to reach a consensus ahead of Wednesday's summit of EU leaders, but several central European countries stood firm against the country-by-country quota proposal.

"It is necessary for EU countries to retain their sovereignty in this

Sobotka praised Hungary, Poland, Slovakia, Romania and Finland for also opposing the quota plan. Nearly a half-million migrants, 40 percent of them

The United Nations refugee agency said the constant stream of migrants is so large -- 6,000 a day landing on European shores -- that a relocation plan covering 120,000 migrants "will not be enough to stabilize the situation."

tivities in the aviation sector were grounded following a protest by two aviation unions in the country.

Addressing the gathering, the General Secretary of NUATE, Comrade Olayinka Abioye, said

Abioye said debts owed the agencies was the reason why promotion can not be effected, as there was no money to pay for various allowances.

He urged workers of various agencies to brace up for battle against debtor airlines.

Also addressing the workers, the president of ATSSSAN, Comrade Benjamin Okewu said the debt profile by airlines were becoming too alarming.

all debtor airlines as it will never be business as usual.

He recalled how Meavis, a concessionaire was sent packing from the airport, adding that same will be extended to debtor concessionaire.

"If we want to achieve, let all prepare for war. We must act and consolidate our decision to do the right thing” Okewu said.

He noted that some airlines since their inception had never had any of their aircraft grounded, with all their aircrafts well maintained and serviceable, while wondering why they could not pay debts owed agencies.

Leave Buhari out of Saraki’s case

am disappointed and dismayed, by insinuations peddled by noisemakers who want to paint PMB in bad light. Only a myopic person will insinuate that Buhari is responsible for Saraki’s current travail. Buhari is not so morally lax to try to use CCB to intimidate Bukola Saraki.

Buhari is a man who will not touch such frivolity with 10 inch stick.

But his enemies who failed to pick a hole in his integrity are up to their mischief,trying to potray him in bad light. The flimsy reason that such mischievous people adduced in these legal intrigues, is that Buhari has snubbed Saraki since he was sworn in as a senate president. Despite not being on speaking terms with the senate president, the senate approved some of the nominees submitted by Buhari. As human beings, we choose those we will hobnob. Nobody can force us to rub shoulder with those who do not share the same ideals with us.

If those associating Buhari with having a hand in Saraki’s predicaments are suffering from short time memory loss,there is need to remind them what they forgot.

Prior to elections of principal of-

ficers in both the Senate and House of Representatives. Buhari made it clear he would not interfere in the election of their principal officers, and he kept his promise by not meddling. This is despite decision by the leadership of APC to put forward Lawal and Gbajamila as its preferred candidates. If Buhari wanted, he could have manipulated the elections in favour of Lawal and Gbajamila. Being a man of integrity he decided to respect the principle of separation of powers.

It is the tradition in Nigerian politics for a president to insist on who occupies the position of the Senate president and Speaker of the House of Representatives. This is evident in how the past presidents went to any length to ensure it was those they were comfortable with occupied those positions.

That Buhari chose decorum over selfishness, somepeople are accusing him of what did not do.

It will be recalled that shortly after Saraki was sworn in, as Senate President, Buhari pledged to work with him. Because of this stand by him, many within his party took a swipe at him for complacency.

Buhari accepted Saraki, because he did not want to engage in business

as usual.

Buhari’s detractors did not stop there. They claimed that, he was behind Bukola Saraki’s wife invitation by EFCC, forgetting that she was invited because of a petition by somebody else. If Buhari is brain behind Saraki’s summon by CCT then we can conclude that Saraki orchestrated Lamorde’s invitation, especially due to the timing of the invitation. Buhari will never descend so low to join issues with Saraki, his integrity is so strong that such possibility should be dismissed with a wave of the hand.

If Saraki had wanted, he could have avoided all what is happening now. Because if he had honoured the invitation of the Code of Conduct summons all would have been well. Even though, he declared that he failed to attend the sitting of the court, because of legal advise given to him. The presidency came out and denied any involvement in this trial,urging Saraki to clear his name. Those who are accusing Buhari of being responsible for what, CCT and CCB did cannot produce tangible evidence, that will substantiate their claims. Invitation of a person like Senate President to defend himself in a court is

a normal thing. It is in his interest to go and prove the allegations and charges against him wrong.

Because doing so he will keep his good image intact.

I found the suggestions by some people that, the whole saga is aimed at witch hunting and character assasination, ridiculous. Buhari has not done anything so far, which indicates that he will use such institutions to harass perceived enemies All those now shouting blue murder over this invitation by CCT,are making a mole out of a hill. This is obvious when you look at how those who were accused ofcorruption were treated.

If Buhari wanted Saraki out of the way, he could have used the issue of the alledged forgery of Senate standing rules, But he decided to allow justice run its full course.

Buhari will never attempt to victimise Saraki, knowing full well that such miscalculation, will lead to a situation whereby the Senate President and his friends will act as a stumbling block to the President’s vision, in retaliation.

After all what happened, it is good the senate president agreed to appear before the tribunal.

Abubakar Audu: Hero or Villain?

he emergence of Prince Abubakar Audu as the APC gubernatorial candidate at the just concluded primaries has generated many comments and controversies.

Many have called into question his eligibility for occupying the number one position in Kogi State, especially in light of the corruption charges against him. Abubakar Audu, a two-time governor, held office between 1992-1993 (he had to relinquish this position when the military junta truncated that attempt at democracy), then was re-elected when Nigeria returned to democracy once more in 1999.

His administration had several achievements and although belonged to the ANPP and not the ruling PDP then was named best governor during the 1999-2003 tenure. He vied for re-election but lost, and while his supporters attribute the loss to the PDP’s rigging machinery, others say his arrogance cost him the victory. This arrogance is attributed to naming of the university after him, but because other governors have done the same in many instances, does seeking to establish and preserve a legacy call his leadership into question?

He would later go on to contest

again in 2007 and 2011, unsuccessfully.

Upon completion of his four-year term in 2003, corruption charges were brought against him by the EFCC, an anti-corruption agency notorious for many headlines and few convictions. These allegations remain the biggest source of criticism of Audu. However, how accurate are they?

During his 1999-2003 tenure, the monthly allocation for the state was between N300-400 million.

During this period, his administration embarked on infrastructural development projects, one of the most significant of which was the Ganaja Road that connects Kogi East to Kogi Central.

Another major achievement was the building of a university at Anyigba, an area that lacked necessary amenities and had no economic lifeline. His administration did not build this university; he also used his vast connections with the diplomatic community to set it on the path of international standard.

The university was one of the best in the country at the time.

He went on to establish a polytechnic in another part of the state; this gave students within Kogi state an opportunity to choose which institution would best suit their needs. Both citadels of learning were well equipped and had

enviable structures. Primary and secondary schools were not left out.

Audu was a man who was serious about transformation, a word the PDP would later bastardise.

His achievements did not stop there, however; unemployment was a serious challenge and Audu knew just what to do. He tapped into one of the many resources in Kogi and brought the Obajana cement factory to life. Africa’s wealthiest man, Aliko Dangote, benefits from this and it has been the source of thousands of jobs for the people.

On healthcare, he established a specialist hospital and saw to it that pregnant women and nursing mothers had access to premium healthcare. At a time when a high maternal mortality rate was the norm, Kogi was the place to be if you were pregnant.

Other high expenditure projects completed include the 1,500 housing units for civil servants in Lokoja and 500 housing units each in two other hitherto underdeveloped communities.

With a bit of critical thought, it becomes rather obvious that with all the achievements during that tenure relative to the funds available to achieve them with, making off with N11billion would have been rather difficult. In addition to this, the EFCC case, contrary to popular opinion, has been more

than just one. Before the N11billion embezzlement charge, the EFCC had lost the case for N4billion and N1billion respectively.

The case has been on for twelve years; this only goes to show that if indeed, the anti-corruption agency had evidence to support these allegations; Audu would have gone to jail. The problem is that public opinion is seldom on an objective analysis of the available facts. The burden of proof lies on the EFCC and for the past twelve years, it has failed to provide this.

The truth that all concerned citizens of Kogi state must acknowledge is that our state is badly in need of positive change; if the PDP governors developed upon or just maintained what Audu achieved, perhaps, we would not be considering voting for him now; this is one man who did the impossible with resources which, compared to the allocation the state receives now, can only be best described as meagre. During Audu’s tenure, workers had no cause to protest and obstruct the flow of traffic over unpaid salaries.

The decision to support Audu’s candidacy, for me, is an informed one, and that is because irrespective of where the leader is from, be he Igala, Okun, Ebira or Nupe, his actions or inactions will affect us all equally.

Education Times Æ s TETFUND trains 400 ESUT staff in four years

No fewer than 400 staff of Enugu State University of Science and Technology (ESUT) have benefitted from Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) sponsored training, Mr. Leonard Khama, ESUT’s Registrar, said.

Khama, who disclosed this while conducting newsmen round TETFund projects in the institution, said the figure represented beneficiaries in the past three years.

He said that the agency’s massive intervention in the school had widened its carrying capacity and impacted on academic and infrastructural development of ESUT. ‘’Previously, it was pretty difficult if not impossible for us to sponsor staff within and outside the country for training programmes. ‘’In the past three years, it has been wonderful; over 50 academic staff have benefitted from TETFund oversea training. ‘’In terms of conferences and workshops, it is about 400.’’

According to him, the institution still needs more computers, classrooms and hostels.

On his part, Mr. Emeka Ojiogu, TETFund Desk Officer, ESUT, said that the fund had committed over N3 billion on projects in the school between 2011 and 2014.

Ojiogu, however, said that the institution had yet to access the second tranche of the Needs Assessment intervention which had been transferred to the Federal Ministry of Education.

Some of TETFund projects in ESUT include Seminar chamber, hostels, faculty buildings, and main library complex, post-graduate building, among others.

Okojie further identified several other core challenges plaguing the African continent to include climate change, low resources, poor capacity development, and charged the universities to establish a trademark in their various academic activities and ensure some level playing field that will allow free academic opportunities and participation.

In its brief goodwill message at the occasion, the African Union through its Senior Education Expert, Dr. Yohannes Woldetesae, assured that the union is committed to promoting quality assurance initiative and practices to advance the implementation of African policies on higher academic qualification.

The conference is being attended by over 189 academics and managers of universities from several African countries and beyond.

Ebonyi COE decries dwindling enrolment Authorities of Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, have lamented the dwindling enrolment in the institution, calling on government to convert the school into a university of Education.

The Registrar of the college, Mr. Sam Nwarisi, stated this while addressing journalists on a tour of infrastructure and facilities provided by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, to enhance teacher training in the institution.

Nwarisi noted that enrolment in the institution was dwindling below 2000 students because of lack of interest in the Nigeria Certificate of Education (NCE) programme by candidates seeking tertiary education in the state.

He however disclosed that the College was working on an affiliation with Ebonyi State University

to shore up its enrolment soon.

Speaking on the state of infrastructure in the institution, he noted that the impact of TETFund intervention was massive as over 90 per cent of the classrooms, lecture theatres, offices and libraries were provided by the fund.

He said TETFund’s intervention in infrastructural development has made teaching and learning easy in the college.

Nwarisi said over a hundred lecturers from the college also benefited from the TETfund academic staff development, with training in various Masters and PhD programmes, adding that the staff development programme has improved the output of the lecturers and strengthened the quality of education in the institution.

cation, which was formerly a College of Agriculture, was converted to a College of Education in 2000, while TETFund massive intervention in the college started springing up in 2011 and has transformed the architectural landscape of the institution.

According to Nwarisi, before the intervention, the school lacked basic infrastructure to function properly as an academic institution.

The Registrar however called for further intervention by TETFund to build a perimeter fence for the institution in order to protect the projects.

Some of the projects visited by the team of journalists include an e-library block, a 1, 000 capacity lecture theatre, a science block housing four laboratories, offices and lecture galleries that can ac-

commodate over a thousand students.

Others include a fully equipped library, a block of 24 office complexes, a block of 46 academic staff offices and a block of micro teaching laboratory.

Two students celebrated for excellence Adekanbi Adeola Two Senior Secondary School students were at the weekend celebrated in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, for their exemplary performances during the last West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Avoidable disaster begging for political will With incidents of building collapse on the rise in the country, another full scale disaster was averted recently as yet another building went down. ALIMI AHMED reports.

For residents of 3, Herbert Macaulay way, Ebute-Metta, the annual Ramaddan season will always come with a feeling of dejavu; it was during this period that their house was reduced to a heap of rubbles. The sad incident though claimed no life happened very early in the morning as Moslem faithfuls were for the early morning prayer but the incident however has brought to the fore streaks of building collapses that have bedeviled the country.

An eye witness who lived opposite the collapsed building told Daily Times the sad incident happened about 6 a.m. when Muslims were about to pray. “We just heard loud noise outside and we saw that it was the building opposite ours that collapsed.”

Defective buildings everywhere A tour of the street showed that many of the houses have been marked for demolition by authorities. Ironically, a building in front of the collapsed building was reported to have collapsed about two years ago, killing almost twelve people. A resident who spoke in confidence confirmed that “virtually all the buildings on the same row on the street with that house are structurally defective and have been marked for demolition.”

Who takes the blame?

A landlord in the area, Faramobi Adelagun made bold to lay the blame on the Lagos state government building regulating agency.

“This is the third collapse in three years, one of which a dozen people were killed,” he told our correspondent. “The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) was contacted on many occasions; though they make many promises, the government agency has always failed to surface for either reconstruction inspection or demolition, particularly

in this area (Herbert Macaulay Way Ebute Meta, Lagos).”

Adelagun added that the government agency has not been truthful or faithful to their job.

“Each time they visit any building on inspection and promise to return for either reconstruction or demolition, they have always failed to return. This has prompted a sort of conspiracy theory between the agency and the landlords with the government agency failing to return for further invigilation after been allegedly ‘settled’ by the land-

lords.”

Adelagun further disclosed that the building besides the collapsed building had long been marked but the agency failed to effect the demolition. According to him, “the building beside it had also been marked long ago, but because it has not been reconstructed, they marked it again today; there must be something between the landlord and the agency, which warranted action not being taken by both sides,” he said.

Also speaking to Daily Times,

another property owner who asked for anonymity held the affected landlords responsible for not effecting the necessary reconstruction on their defective buildings. “They just collect money from their tenants but never renovate their faulty houses.”

While one Blessing, a resident in one of the defective buildings marked for demolition pleaded with landlords to reinforce the structures so that the lifespan of the houses are prolonged, Adelagun also blamed the tenants for not heeding quit notices government pastes on the properties.

“Tenants have been ordered to vacate the defective buildings on several occasions but they failed to heed the directives.”

But tenant in one of the marked buildings protested that the tenants are not to be blamed.

“Of course, we tenants are not to blame because we have already paid our rents for the year and we have no choice. After all, we have to hide their heads under a roof. Some of us are even desperate to just get a place to drop our luggage; you know the situation in Lagos. It is not easy to get a house to rent, so when you get one, you do not want to lose it even in the face of troubled circumstances.”

All efforts made to get comments from the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) yielded no fruit as officials say they cannot comment on the issue as they are civil servants.

It is however hoped that all stakeholders will place premium on human lives that is always lost to the incessant building collapses by doing the right thing.

rands by their parents, and have not returned home since then until the time of this report.

When Daily Times visited the Odugbo’s apartment, Daniel’s mother, Mrs. Regina Odugbo, who was the only one in the house at the time, broke down in tears at the trauma she has been living with since her son disappeared.

According to her, the two teenagers have never slept outside the house except on few occasions when they had to spend the weekends or holidays with some rela-

tives.

“Daniel was last seen on Wednesday, 9th September after his father asked him to go withdraw N5,000 from the automated teller machine (ATM).

“After waiting endlessly, the father chose to call him over the phone to know what was keeping him. He replied that the ATM was not dispensing, so he had to check elsewhere.

Ram fighting is here again and the rams are proving their mettle

Ram fighting in Lagos.

In a country dominated by football-crazy fans, ram fighting has become a welcome deviation. Regulated by the Ram Lovers Association of Nigeria (RLAN) which holds several such competitions across the country at yuletide seasons, the irony is, both the winning and losing rams will end up in the belly of their audience before the yuletide is over! RAZAQ PEDRO filed in this report.

The place stank of cow dung and perspiration as spectators milled around the two rams circling each other. Of course, the smell didn’t deter them from pushing and shoving each other to get a better glimpse of the action. The owners of the fighting rams were allowed front view in other to tend or urge their rams

on during the fight. The gladiator rams shook their heads and retreated several steps before charging. A loud “clunk” echoes across the dusty arena as their heads smash into each other…

Welcome to ram fighting, an underground animal choice spectator sport gradually gaining recognition nationwide.

With the yuletide at its peak, several impromptu fights are organised every day and one of such was the one at the Ansar Ur Deen secondary school compound at Toll Gate along the Lagos /Abeokuta Expressway.

Saheed Ramon is the owner of ‘Small doctor’, the ram he has groomed for this competition.

He says he expects to win some money before leaving. ‘Small doctor’ has won me a lot of money, and today will be no exception.

Still struggling between sobs, Regina said the family got restless and left their house in search of the two boys.

“On getting to the shop where Channing was sent to buy milk, the shop owner confirmed seeing Channing but said he left with Daniel and headed towards the main road. That was last information that was heard of the two.”

The mother could not quite remember what colour of shirts the boys wore on that day, but expressed faith that her son and his cousin will return to the family in no distant time. “I can’t think otherwise; they just have to return back, and this nightmare will end,” she said with grim optimism.

Our correspondent learnt that the family have reported the matter to the police stations, but did not stop there. “We also

reported to SARS, and even uploaded their pictures on face book and Whatsapp; we have gone to different places but up till now they are still nowhere to be found.

“Some people have said they were lured away by friends, my plea is that Nigerians should help me so I can find my two sons wherever they are,” she pleaded.

When Daily Times contacted Daniel’s father over the phone, the old man was still in shock at the manner in which the boys went missing. He however appealed to Nigerians to be on the lookout for his boys and help rescue them wherever they may be.

However, not all rams are made for fighting; they have to have some specific traits.

Ahmed Tokotaya, an enthusiastic ram follower told Daily Times: “You can’t use just any ram, it’s just like other sports. You have to discover their potentials. Some rams like fighting, some don’t.

When a ram that likes fighting is discovered, the next step is to find a trainer to mold the ram into a gladiator.”

Rams that earn their spurs through fighting in the arena are revered as legends just like gladiators in the Roman Empire. One of such rams was ‘Yahoo’ - of blessed memory. It is said that it was a fearsome fighter who had a physique unlike any other ram. Yahoo was very muscular in front but with a thin backside, like the cartoon character, Jonny Bravo. With very large horns, he was easily the ram to beat, winning fights all across the state.

The major downside was that he was too top heavy and had a bad hind leg after a pan sheet slashed a vein .The injury wasn’t treated well, giving him a limp until its death. One thing everyone agreed on was that he was made for fighting.

Ram fighting in big competitions consists of a first round which permits 20 hits. The ram that refuses to go on and hit is declared the loser.

The second round allows 30 hits and the quarter final has 50.

Rams in a fierce battle

The semi-final and final allows a maximum of 100 hits in which a winner must definitely emerge.

There are judges who score points according to the fitness and speed of the fighter ram.

Rams that have emerged winners have taken home prizes like cars, money - even houses. During fights, bets can be placed. Ganiu Solanke is an ardent spectator and staker.

“Bets up to N1 million has been placed on ram fights. People are crazy about the sport. I just placed 5,000 on Sangasa to win its fight.”

As Ganiu was speaking, one of his friends came and told him he had just won 10,000 on his bet.

“You see what I am saying?” he grinned at our correspondent, “Sangasa is a sure ram.”

Ganiu’s stake is small compared to the huge sums used in betting in the sport. “Some people bet with millions, cars commercial buses, motor cycles. IPhone, etc,” Ahmed said.

He also explained that a fighting ram could cost up to N1.5 million from one trainer to another: “There was a time the owner of Yahoo was offered N1 million to sell the ram. Of course, the owner

refused. He would have been foolish to sell the ram.”

For the individual who wants to get a ram without spending much, however, it’s about discovering potential and buying from local ram dealers.

Ram dealer at Meiran ram market on Lagos/Abeokuta Expressway explained: “We get people who come to buy rams. They particularly ask for rams that can fight. Such ram in my stall costs about N20,000 only.”

It’s no surprise that ram dealers are making lots of money with the Ramadan festival at its peak. Daily Times gathered that prices have soared since the fasting period ended. This is because lots of ram fighting tournaments are held when the holy month expires which means more money for everybody.

Our correspondent found that Ram fighting is not restricted to Nigeria, it takes place in places like Cote D’Ivoire, Mali, and Senegal among other countries with exciting names like Sanchez, Gberikoku, Sangasa, Koro and Yahoo. It wouldn’t be any surprise if there is a global ram fighting competition soon in due course.

NEMA warns of flood disaster as 30,000 displaced in Kaduna Sunday Isuwa

Kaduna ÏÏÏA severe flood would submerged many communities in Nigeria, in the few weeks, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has said.

The Director-General (DG) of the agency, Alhaji Mohammed Sani-Sidi, stated this, on Tuesday, and that Nigerians should expect more flood as neighbouring Cameroon, released water from her dams.

Sani-Sidi, stated this while inspecting some flooded areas in Kaduna city, where over 30,000 people have been rendered homeless with hundreds of houses submerged.

The NEMA boss, who expressed regret over the incident, said riverine communities and structures build along river banks in the country must be relocated in order to save lives.

“Nigerians should expect more flooding,” Sani-Sidi said. “We heard about the prediction and the warning of our neighboring country about their intension to released water from their dams. We alerted Nigerians but it seems people are still not taking the advice serious. What is happening in

Kaduna should be expected in many parts of the Nigerian states.

“We are calling on Nigerians to be wary of floodprone areas, because the flood we are experiencing today, has no signs of subsiding. There will be more flood because apart from the rainfall, a lot of water is being released from Cameroon," Sani Sidi said.

He also called on Nigerians to avoid building houses along flood-prone areas, adding that with the climate change, flood disaster would always be severe in the rainy season.

Tuesday, embarked on solidarity march in honour of Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON) for its sustainable war against substandard goods in the area.

The traders closed their shops at Building Material International Market, Ogidi, New Tire Market Nkpor, Electrical Market Obosi, Electronic Dealers Association Onitsha, Amalgamated Tyre Dealers Association, Nkpor and Iron Rod Dealers Association Bridge Head/ Atani Road Onitsha to take part in the march.

The march, which began from Dennis Memorial Grammar School junction, at about 9 a.m., took the trad-

The traders chanted proSON songs, in appreciation of what they described as “the good work the organisation is doing in the campaign against sub-standard products and goods.”

Over 300 workers in an industry in Onitsha had, last month, demonstrated against SON in the area, accusing it of taking bribe before issuing patent certificates to manufacturers.

The traders carried placards with inscriptions as: “SON has saved us from fake and sub-standard products.”

NCAA fines illegal aircraft operators N14m

the two foreign aircrafts that was grounded over infringement into the country's airspace and carrying out illegal commercial operations, has been let-off the hook by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA).

This was after the operator of the aircraft-Bombardier 700-100, with registration marks G-RBEN Global Express S/N 9083, operated by Gama Aviation of UK, had paid a civil fine of N7million to NCAA and $20,000 to the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) on Tuesday.

The aircraft had been flown out of Abuja airport to UK, early Tuesday.

This development was confirmed by the acting General Manager, Public Relations of NCAA, Mr

Sam Adurogboye, during a chat with members of the League of Aviation and Airport Correspondents (LAAC).

The operator of the second aircraft, an Embraer 135J, with registration marks XA-MHA, is yet to comply with the same fine.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), three days ago, in a press statement, announced the grounding of the two foreign registered aircrafts with immediate effect.

The operator of G-RBEN aircraft was found operating in Nigeria’s airspace with falsified flight clearance information, and conducting illegal domestic flight operations in Nigeria.

Other infractions included-conducting illegal commercial revenue flight operations, contrary to con-

ditions contained in Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations (NCARs) Part 10 and security violations.

According to Adurogboye, preliminary investigations revealed that the Embraer 135BJ, registration marks XA-MHA, was reported to have landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, from London, Farnborough, without any flight clearance on the 10th of September, 2015.

Reports from the Air Traffic Controllers (ATC) indicated that the crew informed them that they possess a ministerial approval for the flight.

However, on landing, the crew could not produce any ministerial approval as claimed. The BD 700-100 is a United Kingdom Air Operators Certificate (AOC) holder and has been car-

rying out several domestic operations between Abuja and Lagos without the Authority’s Permit/Certification, in accordance with Nigerian CARs Part 10. While further investigation continues, both aircraft remain grounded. The aircraft country registry in UK CAA and Mexican Civil Aviation Authority [MCAA], will be notified as appropriate.

The statement had assured then that Legal and Enforcement department of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), would after the conclusion of the investigation proffer appropriate sanctions and enforcement procedure, according to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Regulations [Nig. CARs], which is what had now led to the N7million and $20,000 fines on each of the illegal operators.

State Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, on Tuesday, conducted a stakeholders meeting with a view to reviewing the state's development plan, which is to elapse by December 2015.

Inaugurating the meeting at the Kano State African House, the governor said the forum was convened to revise the state development plan for the next 10 years.

He further stated that the revised plan was designed to reposition the state for sustainable development, with

the aim of ensuring literate society, disciplined, and well secured economy, as well as development of infrastructure. The governor noted that in developed countries, political differences are set aside when it comes to matters concerning the development of the society.

In her remark, Kano State Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Mrs. Aisha Muhammad Bello, said experienced technocrats had been assembled to deliberate on the best way to come up with Kano Development plan, to commence from 2016.

State government has contracted fourteen firms to oversee the evacuation of waste materials/rubbish in the state.

The state Commissioner for Environment, Moses O. Nomeh, who disclosed this while briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, said the specifications of the contract involves sweeping of roads within the city, clearing of grasses and evacuation of refuse dumps within the state capital city, and its environs.

The contract is to cost the state a whooping sum of N336 million annually and N28 million monthly, and the allocation of the fund to the contracted firms, based on the terms of contract,

14 contractors to evacuate waste in Ebonyi according to the commissioner.

He observed that some of the contractors felt it was given to them as political settlement by the governor, but warned that any of them who failed to brace up by taking the contract seriously will lose it.

Nomeh, who recalled that when the state ministry of Environment was handling the refuse evacuation under direct labour method, the ministry was doing it effectively, but frowned at the non-performance of some of the contractors, adding that the contract was awarded to ensure division of labour for optimal performance.

Bailout: Ugwuanyi to clear workers entitlements, intensify devt Moses Oyediran

Enugu State ÏÏÏEnugu State Executive Council has approved the procurement of a bailout fund of four billion, two hundred and seven million naira (N4, 207,000,000) for the state, through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), for the liquidation of the outstanding salaries, pensions and arrears, with subventions for parastatals, institutions and boards.

The Council equally approved the procurement of the sum of N10 billion from the CBN for infrastructural development in the state.

by Governor Ayo Fayose as a drain pipe to siphon money from the state’s treasury.

It said the promotion of elite projects, while neglecting initiatives for the growth of local economy for the masses of the agrarian state was insensitive, wicked and selfish, noting that the promoter of the project had no motive other than the “characteristic flight of the state funds”, in such capital projects that had little or no value for the local economy.

Criticising some community leaders for their accessory role in the project, mainly planned for the fancy of a few, who see Ekiti State as their private property, Publicity Secretary, Mr. Taiwo Olatunbosun,

said, on Tuesday, that Fayose had, in a desperate move, embarked on begging and cajoling some first class traditional rulers with mouth-watering offers to support “this wasteful venture”.

“Of what economic sense and use is an airport to the economy of Ekiti State, when the Akure airport is less than one-hour drive from Ado-Ekiti? What has been the positive economic impact of the Akure airport on the economy of Ondo State, which has hundreds of big industries compared to Ekiti with none?” Olatunbosun queried, wondering why Fayose could not learn anything on the poor state of Ibadan airport in that highly industrialised city.

“The Ekiti airport project estimated to cost a whopping N17 billion is the most economically unviable project at this period considering how Fayose daily laments that the state has no money

And even though Mikel has been recalled to the team by Oliseh, Eguavoen, who was Mikel’s coach at the U17’s and also gave the midfielder his Super Eagles debut, says Mikel must make it clear if he wants to keep playing for the team or not.

“Mikel should please understand he doesn’t have any other country to play for apart from Nigeria,” Eguavoen said.

“He’s one of our best players and plays in one of the best leagues and one of the best clubs in the world. He should put everything humanly possible into it (playing for Nigeria), or he should tell Nigerians ‘I don’t want to play anymore’, and then we can leave him alone,” Eguavoen thundered.

he Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has hailed members of Nigeria’s African Games (AAG) team for their gallant performances at the just-ended tournament.

The team was impressive at the Games in Congo Brazzaville. Nigeria claimed 47 gold, 56 silver and 44 bronze.

The Speaker’s Special Adviser on Media and Public Affairs, Turaki Hassan, said the athletes had done Nigeria proud by finishing in second place (behind Egypt) in the overall medals table.

Dogara said the spectacular performance displayed by the athletes in Congo was reflective of the true Nigerian spirit and worthy of commendation.

“The performance of Team Nigeria has demonstrated that with unity of purpose, hard work and determination there is nothing that is not achievable,” he said.

uper Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh, has explained the criteria behind the invitation of 24 players for next month’s double-header international friendlies against Congo and Cameroun.

The Nigeria coach has invited 24 players for the international friendly games and handed recalls to John Obi Mikel and Victor Moses, while captain and first choice goalkeeper, Vincent Enyeama returns after missing the games against Tanzania and Niger Republic.

Speaking on his personal website, Oliseh said he is searching for players to build his team around, and promised to give all 24 players opportunities in the games.

“The aim of doing this (inviting 24 players) is to keep trying to get our team

together and trying to build and get our team together. We wanted an opportunity for the new coaching crew to keep working in one direction for Nigerians,” Oliseh said.

“And because of that, I have assembled a team of 24 players to come in and we’ll try to give as much playing time to these 24 players as possible and the good thing is we’ll be together for seven days non-stop; working together and sharing ideas and trying to get the team’s cohesion together.

“We are trying to get a nucleus; a group of players that we can build the team around and I don’t just need one, I need several players and that’s what we’re going to do,” Oliseh stated.

The Super Eagles face the Red Devils and Indomitable Lions of Cameroun respectively next month in two friendly games in Belgium.

A STEP CLOSER TO US EXTRADITION

rinidad and Tobago’s Attorney General has signed Authority to Proceed (ATP) documents, clearing the way for extradition proceedings against ex-FIFA Vice-President Jack Warner, who is wanted in the United States on corruption charges, a court heard on Monday.

The case was then adjourned until Friday after lawyers asked for time to review the documents. Warner is among nine officials of world football’s governing body, along with five sports marketing executives indicted by U.S. prosecutors. He faces 12 charges related to racketeering and bribery.

U.S. authorities have asked for him to be extradited in order to face the charges.

Warner was arrested on a provisional

warrant in May. Warner, the former president of CONCACAF, the confederation for North and Central America and the Caribbean and an ex-FIFA vice-president, has denied all wrongdoing.

The 72-year-old is also at the center of one of the key elements in the indictment - a $10 million payment from South African football officials to CONCACAF, which U.S prosecutors allege was linked to Warner’s support for South Africa’s bid to host the 2010 World Cup. Lawyers for Warner asked Deputy Chief Magistrate Mark Wellington to discharge their client because Attorney General Faris Al Rawi missed a Sept. 16 deadline for signing the ATP.

IT WAS NATURAL TO ANSWER RUSSIA’S CALL

– SLUTSKY

A

s Russia continues to prepare to host the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, its national team is starting life under a new coach: current CSKA Moscow boss Leonid Slutsky. And for the first time since 2006, the Russian Football Union (RFU) has entrusted the job to a Russian national, following the appointments of Dutchmen Guus Hiddink and Dick Advocaat, and the Italian Fabio Capello.

What made the selection even more unusual is that Slutsky has agreed to take charge of the national team until the end of the UEFA EURO 2016 qualifiers while still fulfilling his coaching duties at CSKA Moscow, where he has been in charge for six years, winning the Russian Premier League twice and the Russian Cup twice.

“I know that having a part-time coach is unusual in modern football, but it’s not the first time this has happened in Russian or world football,” he said. “When I spoke to the RFU, we talked about a short period of time, four to six EURO 2016 qualifiers. It’s an exceptional measure. Russia’s got into difficulties in its group, so when the offer was put to me, I said yes. For any coach in my position, I think it would have been entirely natural to answer the call and help the national team, even if it’s only for a few matches.”

As a result, Slutsky’s autumn schedule now looks particularly daunting. It includes the domestic title race, which CSKA are currently leading, the UEFA Champions League group phase, where the club will be facing Manchester United, PSV Eindhoven and Wolfsburg, and key EURO 2016 qualifiers. Yet this packed programme holds no fear for the 44-year-old.

“I don’t see a problem here. In modern football, what a coach needs to think about above all is the next game. I’ve already been operating that way for a number of years and it’s nothing new for me,” he said. “I know virtually all the players in the national team – they’re all playing in the Russian Premier League. The only exception is Denis Cheryshev at Real Madrid, but we’ve spoken on a few occasions.”

It’s definitely the case that, for any coach, it would be very prestigious, and also very emotional, to prepare your national team for a World Cup at home.

Leonid Slutsky If Slutsky sounds confident, it is not without good reason. Domestically, he has been one of the most successful coaches in recent years, helping CSKA to hold their own against a starstudded Zenit St Petersburg side. In 2009, he was the first coach to lead a Russian club into the quarter-finals of

the UEFA Champions League, and before that he enjoyed more local success with Krylya Sovetov from Samara and FC Moscow. But as far as the strategist is concerned, his finest achievement to date was his work with the Olimpia youth team in Volgograd at the very outset of his career.

“At Olimpia I was working with boys who were born around 1982, and 17 of them ended up playing professionally. That’s just an unbelievably high percentage, pretty much impossible. I’m proud of that,” he remarked.

Slutsky himself, unlike the overwhelming majority of Russian coaches, has virtually no experience of playing professional football – a fact that led the local press to dub him as “the Russian Mourinho”, a moniker he promptly rejects. His bourgeoning career ended when he was 19, after he was injured falling out of a tree while trying to rescue a neighbour’s cat.

“The woman next door came round and asked me to help retrieve her cat from a tree,” the Volgograd native explained. “I climbed up the tree but then I fell. The result was an open compound fracture of my left kneecap. It’s the sort of injury that not only rules you out of football, but also affects every part of your life. In all I spent a year in

hospital and, while I was able to work on my leg and later tried to get back into football, it didn’t happen. But now, as a coach, when I look back at what happened, it was no great loss to Russian football to be deprived of Slutsky the player.”

Varied background Although Slutsky has done most of his coaching in Moscow, he has strong links with other parts of Russia. He was born in Volgograd, and spent a year coaching in Samara – two cities that will be hosting matches at Russia 2018, and, according to the CSKA boss, are very excited about the prospect.

“People in Russia, and the provinces in particular, are really looking forward to the World Cup. For these cities, it’s the chance of a lifetime to see the best stadiums, the best footballers, to bring about real improvements in infrastructure and to be part of the international community. Not everyone living in these cities has the opportunity to travel abroad. They’re already looking forward to the World Cup. So I want to tell all football fans planning to come to Russia that they’ll quite simply be charmed by the people they meet, especially in the regions, and they’ll be charmed by the feelgood atmosphere the tournament will bring to these cities.”

So would Slutsky himself like to be

national team coach when Russia hosts the World Cup? “I don’t really think in those terms. I just go from one match to the next without looking that far ahead,” he said. “But it’s definitely the case that, for any coach, it would be very prestigious, and also very emotional, to prepare your national team for a World Cup at home.”

Slutsky’s reign got off to a dream start with wins over Sweden (1-0) and Liechtenstein (7-0), lifting them up to second place in their qualifying group with a good chance to qualify for next year’s finals in France.

However, critics of the national team still claim the current lineup lacks stars, but that is not quite the way the coach sees it, as he explained at the end of our interview.

“If ‘stars’ means players from the top clubs in the best leagues, then that’s true, we don’t have any,” he acknowledged. “That said, Cheryshev’s at Madrid, and we would really like to see him get more playing time there. But the way I see it, the Russian championship doesn’t get the recognition it deserves. I think the national team’s got really good players, and they’re absolutely up to the challenge facing them at the moment – which is to qualify for EURO 2016.”

Roger Federer fan who spent almost 11 years in a coma woke to the news that the Swiss was still at the top of the game and watched him reach the US Open final.

Spaniard Jesus Aparicio was putting money aside to watch his idol in person, targeting the 2005 Championships at Wimbledon, when he was involved in a car crash in December 2004.

Federer, then 23 and having claimed three of the year’s four Grand Slams -- a feat he would repeat twice more in 2006 and 2007 -- has maintained his status as one of the world’s preeminent players ever since.

Anderson, representing Cleveland County Cricket Club, launched a brutal assault on Willow Cuts Cricket Club batsman George O’Brien while wicket-keeping during the Champion of Champions final at the St David’s Cricket Club Ground 10 days ago.

The fight turned ugly after Anderson remonstrated Brien between overs with both players wrestling each other to the ground.

Anderson went as far as kicking the batsman. Fellow players and officials rushed to calm them down but the damage was done by then.

But early September, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari (PMB) discharged his constitutional obligation by declaring his assets. Ditto Yexmi Osinbajo, the Vice President. In keeping with the electioneering promises, the assets declaration of our two leaders was made public. So that chapter has been done and dusted.

Some of us find the president’s modest assets ‘shocking’. The Washington Post, which also might have found it shocking, mentioned that PMB might be the least corrupt president in Africa. I was chuffed. My Prezzie, the least corrupt president in Africa! What a huge departure from the negative branding of Nigeria and her leadership. Up Nigeria! The Code of Conduct Bureau said that the public assets declaration by PMB and his Vice was entirely voluntary and this should be seen as ‘their commitment to transpar-

ency’. Legal luminaries, political analysts, other movers and shakers agree that the duo’s gesture ‘has taken transparency and accountability in governance a notch higher’. Sai Baba!

We’re still waiting for the no. 3, no. 4 - and the state governors - to tow the line.

But we may be ‘Waiting for Godot’. For we have learnt that nowhere in the Constitution is it required of a public office holder to declare his/her assets publicly. Supporting this stand is a legal bigwig who said the actions of PMB and his Vice made him proud ‘to be a Nigerian’ and that though the law did not mandate public officers to declare their assets publicly but the other public office holders ‘should have the moral compulsion to do so’. To a law lecturer at the University of Lagos the assets declaration ‘represents a veritable tool for transparency in government…’

NEPA/PHCN are now ‘born-again’ DISCOs. It’s the Buhari Factor, abi? Not wanting to be left behind, the Financial Reporting Council (FRC) has come on board the ‘Change’ Train. The Acting Chairman, while delivering a keynote address at a recent two-day awareness workshop on Fiscal Responsibility Act (FRA), mentioned the need for its Governing Act to be amended because it ‘limited the Council’s powers to fight crime’. Activities of some charitable and faith-based organisations (grouped together under the Not-For-Profit Organisations, NGPOs) have come under the spotlight of the Financial Reporting Council (FRC).

FRC expressed the lack of transparency, sharp practices and abuses among these NFPOs. The Council is therefore proposing ways of regulating the activities of these organisations through an amendment to its Governing Act 2007 that would empower it to prosecute any official or agency that contravened its laws. To this end, the body has prepared a 30-page draft of Corporate Governance 2015 that ‘seeks to regulate the establishment, structure and finances of NFPOs’ comprising educational organisations - schools, vocational centres, conservation groups and also churches, mosques,

charitable groups with religious principles, the list goes on. FRC plans to meet and dialogue with NFPOs stakeholders so as to get their contributions before writing the final draft of the code of corporate governance. They believe there is ‘a need for corporate governance in NFPOs’ which is ‘hinged on good governance and orderly succession (in their hierarchy) in view of the funding from ‘foreign donors (and) domestic donors (who), out of conviction, knowledge, philanthropy, need, deceit or ignorance contribute large sums of money’.

Some of the religious leaders agree that, ‘there are needs for regulations of faith-based organisations’ but they question the ‘overbearing status of the draft proposals’ and recommend that the FRC should ‘leave the churches and the mosques out’ of the NFPOs to be regulated. These religious leaders are yet to join the ‘Change’ Train. They are like those passengers who arrive at their destination with suitcases filled with ‘contrabands’ but push their trolleys towards the ‘Nothing To Declare’ exit. The FRC, like the customs officials at the airports, invite them to step aside, heave their boxes on the table and open them for checks.

‘Obey first and then complain,’ I remember my primary school teachers telling me. Disobedience of our laid-down rules led to non-accountability

which festered and decayed our system. This turned us into the ‘giant with the clay feet’. Those who should be servantkings became overbearing lords. All we’re saying is that these lords aren’t our shepherds. Jesus Christ was the servant-king. He lowered himself to the common man’s level. He washed his disciples’ feet.

Our lords spiritual, with their rock star lifestyle and all the bling of stardom, have become lords temporal.

Buddha was born into wealth. He turned his back on riches and chose a life of frugality. Many other Masters sent down to earth as shepherds abandoned wealth to gain spirituality. Our spiritual leaders choose materialism over spirituality.

They ask that we lift up our offerings at ‘offering time, blessing time’, we’re constantly reminded of our tithes. They and their brothers in politics preach ‘stomach infrastructure’.

Christianity has become Jesus Christ Plc. And God reigns on His throne! All of us confess to His miracle in our land these past days. Many had predicted and expected Nigeria to disintegrate post-Nigeria 2015 elections. We tottered, we almost tumbled.

But the Almighty propped us up again. Amazing grace! Primate Alder of the Cherubim and Seraphim Church of Christ, The Worshippers in a recent interview, mentioned that, ‘Many so-called men of God are even more

corrupt than some politicians.. Today we see men of God ride in aircraft; palatial yatchs, exotic cars when the Bible tells us that (the) love of money is the root of all evils.’ Some of these religious men/ women are professionals - lawyers, accountants etc - who may be living off the sweat of their professions - our Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo falls into this group.

But - Ijo nru alufa n’sanra - the congregation grows lean while the pastor grows fatter. My lords spiritual, in the name of us all, toe the line of ‘Change’. A lot of the young ones will ask you to ‘chill’ and to not resist the monitoring and regulating of your affairs by the Financial Reporting Council. The CEO of FRC, already calmed the fears of the doubting Thomases among the religious leaders by saying the measures being taken were ‘not to witch-hunt or emasculate (any) NFPOs’ and that they were ‘aimed at repositioning them to receive greater public trust and counter the possibility of terrorist organisations (who might be) using them as funnels to destabilise the nation’.

We’re fighting for the soul of Nigeria. So please open up your gates and books and give us a break from this awada kerikeri (comedy).

To the FRC, I say, ko ma roll (bring it on).

ordon Ibe will live to regret his decision to choose England ahead of Nigeria, says President of the Nigeria football and other sports supporters club, Rafiu Ladipo.

The debate over the Liverpool’s rookie international future came to an end after the Super Eagles coach, Sunday Oliseh confirmed that the 19-year-old has chosen to represent the Three Lions.

According to Ladipo, the English senior has nothing to offer Ibe and feels the player should have taken a leaf out of the likes of John Fashanu and Gabriel Agbonlahor who failed to make it with the European team.

“It’s rather unfortunate that Ibe has chosen not to play for his fatherland instead another country. The truth is that England will only use and dump him,” Ladipo said.

“We have had many experience in the past when Nigerians and Africans were lured to play for them, and the moment they hand them one or two caps, they are done, so I think it would be a good idea for him to change his mind and represent Nigeria.

“I believe he has more to gain and many years to play for Nigeria rather than England.

Since he has chosen to play for the [Three Lions], I wish him the best of luck but I know too well that very soon, he will be done.

He pointed out that attention should be focused on the Nigerian league to discover great players rather than rely on foreign groomed stars who would always turn down the country.

ISO certification: NSE raises bar in information security Adesola Akindele No fewer than 30,000 websites are targeted by hackers according to a disclosure by Sophos Lab to Forbes daily. This mind boggling statistics has become a motivation for serious companies and institutions to upgrade their information security systems. One of such institutions that has made a bold step in Nigeria is the Nigerian Stock Exchange, a bourse that prides itself as the gateway to African markets.

Recently the exchange was awarded the ISO 27001:2013 certification by the British Standards institute, a United Kingdom based global standards institution with over a decade history of helping companies achieve best practice standards in their operations across 150 economies.

This is coming at a critical time when all strata of the nation’s economy is restructuring to be in tune with the wind of change being marshaled by the Federal Government.

Insurance, Mohammed Kari, made the statement at the ongoing 2015 insurance professionals’ forum with the theme, “The Nigerian Business Environment, Implications for insurance industry, held in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Kari said most of the actions of some professionals in the industry today were actually criminal.

According to him, “The challenges of huge competence deficit, corruption, low level of innovation and over-dependence on the oil sector, leaves all asunder to fathom the best soluble buyouts and how to harness the opportunities inherent therein.”

He said the commission will, henceforth, map out strategies to check the prevailing excesses in

the microeconomic environment with a view to exploring better ways that will move the industry forward.

“In consequence of the effect of uncontrollable changes in the macroeconomic environments affecting our businesses, organizations and entities either positively or negatively, we are therefore implored to map-out adaptive strategies and identify the opportunities inherent in the ‘change’. As far as innovation is concerned, we need to improve the content and quality of our services,” Kari said.

Women to account for $1.7trn insurance contribution by 2030 — Experts Nigerian women, particularly those who are entrepreneurs in the microeconomic environment, have the potentials to contribute the sum of $1.7 trillion to the insurance market by 2030, according to The International Finance Corporation (IFC).

The IFC is a member of the World Bank Group, which has the responsibility of offering investment, advisory, and asset management services to encourage private sector development in developing countries.

In a report, the Corporation emphasized on the need to engage women in the insurance marketing as they are observed to dominate the microeconomic sector.

According to IFC, the significance of this anticipated leap presents a major new opportunity for sustainable and inclusive growth, tar-

geted at women across the globe.

The report read that the insurance industry has largely overlooked women as a consumer segment despite significant market growth potentials. This must be overturned with specific measures and actions directed bringing women in the picture economic growth through the insurance market.

By effectively reaching out to women, the industry could significantly increase their economic participation and further support social and economic development in emerging markets, IFC insists.

The report also highlighted the contribution women can make as agents, marketing and sales leaders, and professionals who would expand coverage to clients in emerging markets.

“At IFC, we believe strongly in

leveraging the opportunities that women present as a force for development—as consumers, employees, leaders, and entrepreneurs,” said IFC CEO Jin-Yong Cai. “We are confident that the findings of this report can help plant the seeds for a thriving, women-focused insurance market, enabling women to better protect themselves, their families, communities and societies.”

The IFC based its recommendations on a series of in-depth interviews with industry representatives and associations, brokers, agents, customers, and regulators in the 10 markets, desk research, and econometric modeling. It shows how women’s increased income, improved socioeconomic status, and greater need for protection create a significant opportunity for insurers.

UGRL certifies 31 pupils as Microsoft office specialists Tony Nwakaegho United Global Resources Ltd, a leading computer technology training company, has received commendations from schools, parents and pupils for the high standard of its annual ICT training programme for children.

The commendation was given at the 2015 graduation ceremony of young Microsoft Office Specialists trained by UGRL in Lagos. 31 students, aged between 9 and 11, drawn from various private schools in and around Lagos received certification as Microsoft Office Specialists.

12 out of the 31 were certified as Microsoft Office Specialists for Office Excel 2010 while 19 got certified as Microsoft Office Specialists for Office Word 2010. Nine instructors were also certified during the programme.

General Manager of UGRL, Mr. Vipul Gajjar, who announced the results of the 2015 Microsoft Office Specialists examinations said: “The feat achieved by the pupils was made possible by our desire at UGRL to train, promote and encourage ICT knowledge and certification among kids in both primary and secondary schools associated with us.”

He commended Nigerian children for their growing interest in the acquisition of ICT knowledge and disclosed that 128 children

have been trained and certified as Microsoft Office Specialists since UGRL launched the MOS certification training initiative in 2010. He said more than one million MOS exams are taken every year in over 140 countries, adding: “The Intelligence Quotient of children on ICT has improved tremendously over the years.”

A parent, Mr Gboyega Aiyepeku, whose son, Abimbola, was certified explained: “My boy is only 9 years old but as a result of the UGRL@School training he is now certified in a course that adults use to make a living. The standard is very high.”

National Association of Telecom Subscribers (NATCOMS) has warned MTN to expect civil protest from Nigerian subscribers anytime soon for alleged ripping off of telecom consumers by MTN and other telco firms.

The NATCOMS President, Chief Deolu Ogunbanjo, who gave the warning in a release, said that “We want them to know that Nigerians also will protest against unreasonable charges.”

This is coming on the heels of a protest staged recently by a South African rights group, ‘Right2Know’ which insisted that “Airtime and data bundles should not expire if they are unused.

“The findings clearly demonstrate how the astronomically high pricing structures of South African telecommunications companies seriously affect the financial stability of many people, and also infringe on their basic

and fundamental communications rights.”

Ogunbanjo said MTN and other telecoms firms will soon “hear” from Nigerians soon.

It would be recalled that Right2know recently picketed MTN Head Offices in Johannesburg in order to put an end to its “unethical profiteering.”

Right2Know recently released the Lived Costs of Communications research report.

Compiled by the Link Centre at WITS University, the report details the real experiences of the everyday consumer in South Africa, and how the high costs imposed by cellular communications companies impact on the daily lives of ordinary people.

The group, which demonstrated on the street of Johannesburg, South Africa , accused cell phone companies such as MTN of “ripoff”.

Among other things, the group demand free SMS and no expiration of airtime and data.

Airtel in partnership with NIBSS, offers BVN Query Service Opeoluwani Akintayo Following the extension of the Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise to October 31st, leading telecoms operator, Airtel Nigeria, has announced a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) to provide Nigerians a much easier way to access their BVNs through their mobile phones.

With this initiative, bank customers who have registered at

their banks for BVN, can obtain their BVNs, at any time, by dialing the USSD code *565*0# on their mobile phones at N10 per query.

Recall that chaotic situations were recorded in most banks’ premises in Nigeria, recently, as thousands of customers besieged banks in a bid to beat the initial deadline for the BVN enrolment which was earlier billed to expire on Tuesday, 30th June, 2015.

Also, customers that have more than one bank account were also

seen with pieces of white papers where the banks where they had registered wrote their unique BVN numbers to take to other banks to key in. With Airtel’s new service, customers can now access their BVNs on the move through their mobile phones.

The BVN, a central bank initiative, which was launched in February 2014, is being supported by the bankers’ committee. It is aimed at protecting bank customers and further strengthening the Nigerian banking system. It was

among other things, introduced to address safety of customers’ funds, avoid losses through compromise of personal identification numbers and other criminal activities in the industry.

The BVN is a unique number that enables one person to have a single identity in the banking system. It basically ensures that a customer’s identity is not stolen. A customer is only expected to register at one bank, irrespective of the number of accounts he has.

Speaking on the new service, Airtel Nigeria’s Chief Commercial Officer, Maurice Newa, said Airtel is committed to providing relevant services that will empower Nigerians to realize their full potentials and fulfill their dreams.

“We are excited that the NIBSS has chosen to partner with us to deliver real value to Nigerians. At Airtel, we will continue to explore further opportunities to partner with the Nigerian government at different levels,” he said.

Microfinance Bank: Untapped window of foreign direct investment Olisa Egbunike Nigeria in the last 18 months has battled the sharp drop in foreign exchange inflow following the fall in crude oil price and the unhealthy general global economic outlook.

The development among other things in recent times forced the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to adopt some monetary policy measures to safeguard the nation’s foreign reserves and remain economically viable within the committee of nations’.

Some of the proactive measures include a stop in accessing foreign exchange from the official market for the importation of about 40 items, among other things.

JP Morgan, an international economic rating agency also raised its concerns about the nation’s foreign exchange liquidity profile among other things and threatened to delist Nigeria bonds from the emerging market bourse.

Although the CBN has reassured Nigerians on the nation’s strong economic fundamentals, Mr Alex Enyinnah, Vice-President of the African Microfinance Transparency (ATM), said the concerns was unfortunate.

The concerns raised about Nigeria’s foreign exchange liquidity profile, Enyinnah argued, would not have arisen if attention was paid at the other potent sources of earning foreign exchange outside crude oil.

In a fresh voice towards diversification, Enyinnah said that Microfinance banks and institutions remains one of the newest and potent vehicles for attracting added new foreign inflows.

“We initiated the policy in microfinance banking some years back but the operators refused to take advantage of the international convergence of financers to attract foreign funds through

direct equity participation, loans and grants for microfinance banks and institutions,” Enyinnah said.

The ATM Vice-President also insisted that Nigeria’s huge population of 170 million solidly leveraged the nation in attracting investments targeting the empowerment of the rural poor, women and micro and small entrepreneurs’.

While insisting that microfinance banks and institutions can attract more than 300 million dollars, geared toward poverty alleviation, he also floated a caveat that would make global financers to cavort and shift attention to Nigeria.

Center director of operations, “Nigeria will only benefit from the pool of global funds, if operating microfinance banks and institutions internalize international micro-banking best practices and develop its micro-banking human capital.”

Expanding the submissions of Enyinnayah, Grooming Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Godwin Nwabunka, said microfinance banks in Nigeria must develop peculiar strategies of meeting the needs of micro and small businesses.

The strategies, as suggested

by Nwabunka must be driven by a vision and mission that understands and appreciates micro and small businesses in Nigeria.

According to him, the recent growth of microfinance banks and institutions’ operations in Nigeria, especially in the urban centers, makes it imperative for operators to define standards and establish code of operational conduct or ethical standards.

Nwabunka insisted that contrary to other opinions, transparency and shared confidence between the masses and microfinance banks provides major link to economic growth, food security, youths and women empowerment.

The other gains of microfinance banks in an emerging economy like Nigeria, he said, are robust health provisions, education and general wellbeing.

But the unresolved issues surrounding the poor management of most microfinance banks and institutions in Nigeria, Nwabunka also said, challenged Grooming Center into bridging the gap through capacity building and strategic operational development.

To him, “our added mission as a microfinance institution is to prepare and reposition interested Nigerian microfinance banks to attract the attention international finance organisations.

“We have accepted to mobilise others in championing the development of domestic dynamic policies that will meet the peculiar need of micro-businesses, youths and women empowerment.

“Our experiences in Nigeria, especially dealing with microwomen entrepreneurs over the years and exposures to international management of micro credits compelled us in Grooming Center to assist in bridging the knowledge gap in the subsector,” Nwabunka added.

He said that Grooming understanding of the needs of the poor, women entrepreneurs, households and groups methodology in financial empowerment, earned the center confidence of international financers.

The International Finance Corporation, (IFC), in 2014 invested four million dollars (N650 million) in Grooming Centre. IFC investments in Grooming targets the increasing access to finance for up to 780,000 microenterprises by 2018.

The IFC’s investment will also help Grooming Centre offer increased financial services to economically active low income earners engaged in small-scale trading and productive microenterprises.

Grooming Centre, Nwabuna said, used the funds to meet the needs of micro-entrepreneurs nationwide, especially rural dwellers largely unserved with credits.

Outside IFC, Enyinnah identified Blueorchard vehicle of Swisserland , Triodous Bank of Netherlands, Regymbaotic, the Norwaygean Microfinance Initiative and the International Soil Facility and Development Corporation (IFDC) as some the global supporters of micro-credits.

The Federal Government has entered into a partnership agreement with Sterling Bank Plc and a project contractor, Continental Transfert Technique for the collection and payment accounting for a project called ‘e-PASS. The project will commence on Wednesday 22nd September, 2015.

The e-PASS project is a scheme designed by the Federal Government to ensure that all NonECOWAS immigrants that visit Nigeria with a Tourist or Business Visa and intend to stay beyond an

aggregate of 56 days in a year are made to pay a certain amount of money as advised by the Nigerian Immigration Service (NIS).

With this agreement, Sterling Bank in a statement said the fee can now be paid from the date of commencement of the scheme at the Bank’s designated airport stations or branches.

Already, the Bank has designated its representatives to be stationed at the five International airports located in Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, Kano and Enugu for this purpose. In a statement signed by its Group Head, Strategy & Com-

munications, Mr. Shina Atilola, the Bank explained that an aggregate stay beyond 56 days but not exceeding 90 days would attract a fee in the equivalent of USD200 while 91 days to 180 days will attract a fee equivalent to USD1,000.

Aggregate stay beyond 180 days but not exceeding 365 days would attract a fee equivalent to USD2,000 while an over-stay without due permission from the Federal Government would attract a penalty which is 100 per cent of the prescribed fees. A fee of N8,000 will be charged for each application form, the Bank said.

Fashion business is very lucrative –Temitope Alade

Temitope Olanre-Alade is the chief wardrobe consultant of Ibile Vogue, an afro cosmopolitan fashion label that has consistently given the afrocultural heritage a voice in global fashion circles. A woman of many parts, Temitope is an awardwinning designer and presenter of popular show, Obinrin Asiko on Orisun Television network.

In this incisive interview, Tope who is currently the National Secretary General of the Nigerian Fashion Designers Association (FADAN) spoke on her flare for designing African print, the fashion industry in general and other issues. Excerpts:

How did you come up with that name – Ibile Vogue?

I started with Culture Vogue and then I just felt I should translate it to my mother tongue and Ibile means culture, that was how I came up with that unique name. I deal with arts that speak volume of afro-cultural heritage and I wanted something that would connect us to our roots.

What was growing up like for you?

Growing up was fun for me because I grew in the university environment as my parents were staff of the university. As a child, I had always loved arts and culture.

Anytime, I went to the museum, I would get home and start sketching endlessly and that was how the flair for connecting back to our roots came from. My parents have friends abroad who would come back and not being able to speak their native languages again. Our culture is dying, and imagine me, in my mid forties; I cannot even say that I can speak my native language fluently. I am a Pan-Africanist and an unapologetic one.

What have been the challenges since you started Ibile Vogue?

It was funding. I started this business not having anybody funding me. I won’t even say that was the major challenge because I was able to pull through with a lot of passion. A lot of people would tell you it is funding that is the issue for them but I would say no to that challenge. The major challenge I have not been able to surmount is the challenge of getting good hands

that would work with you. You get people and train them and when they see they have become very good in their own eyes, they leave and you start to hire people again and train them all over again. Another challenge is electricity which is killing our business. I have to buy fuel even during scarcity because I am not used to giving excuses to my customers that I must have given delivery dates. Even if I would lose my profit, I like to meet up with deadlines. Another challenge is the fact that government and banks are not financing us and so, we are just a loner. If you see any successful fashion label today, just know that the owner has fought several battles to be successful. Despite all, that I do my work very well. I still cut and I love doing that because I believe that is the most sensitive part of the construction process.

To what extent have you been able to sell your Afropolitan idea to Nigerians?

You can see it! It is everywhere.

Everybody is now putting on Ankara everywhere. I will like to appreciate former President Olusegun Obasanjo who will always wear our natives. He never wore suits. For me, that is the best thing to do because the Whites won’t come here and wear agbada. I have never travelled out and worn complete English wears, even here in Nigeria. The last time I was in Europe, I found myself having to give out an adire bangle to a White woman. She is a Dutch and she just kept admiring me and the compliment was as if I gave her more than a bangle. She came to visit me here in Nigeria and bought a whole lot when she was going back. At another show we had in Malta, we sold all we took along and they were asking us to come again in October. For me, I can never wear anything 100 percent English.

You mean you cannot be caught putting on complete English wears?

You can ask people that know me in the industry. You cannot find me dead putting on 100 percent Western wears. Check me out. I have been consistent with this for 10 years now. I do Aso-oke, Ankara, adire, just anything cultural and African.

Definitely!

That is it.

What legacy would you like to leave behind?

Well, I want to be remembered for grooming the youth in financial emancipation. I am an empowerment and professional coach too. I consult for NGOs too. Now, I am a professional empowerment person. I am still into fashion because of my passion for it. Also, a lot of my customers have been with me for over 10 years now and they have decided that they cannot let go. If I don’t want to do it, it would look as if one is feeling too big. So, I still work for them and they pay well.

How profitable is this business?

It is very profitable. Some designers would say it is very rough

but if it is not profitable, we would have stopped doing it. Most people in the business are very educated now and they know that designers are intellectual properties. You are paying for their brains. Fashion is very lucrative. It includes several accessories. You can even do belt alone and be a millionaire. Our culture is even encouraging us to make more money. Imagine the Aso-Ebi culture. You are sure that they will always bring it to you to sew. When you bring it to me, I will always buy even if I won’t attend your event. I’m sure that one day; I will sew it and put it on to an event.

How do we identify the brand of Ibile Vogue in a competitive market?

(Laughs) I really don’t know how to differentiate it because a lot of people are using Ankara out there.

I just know that mine is unique and people like it so much. Most of my designs are not so heavy and

appear very comfortable. I know that people cannot catch me in complete native so I try to present myself as such. I repeat, you can never catch me dead in 100 percent Western.

As the National Secretary of FADAN, what is the role played by the body in the fashion industry of the country?

FADAN is the only fashion body recognised by the government in Nigeria. If the government is thinking anything fashion, it is FADAN. Then, FADAN is like an umbrella of protection for the rights of fashion designers in the country. The current president has done a whole lot, representing and negotiating with the government on our behalf. We are looking at having some of the things we have been pushing for from the new administration. What we really need now is a production hub. We also organise competitions for young designers to showcase their works.
