federal government, on Tuesday, admonished states governments to look inward to identify other sources of revenue that would make them more economically

viable and financially independent, rather than solely relying on monthly Federal allocations.

This may entail, in certain states, a fundamental review of the role of government in line with revised objectives, but will yield long term sustainable dividends.

Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun stated these in Abuja during a stakeholders meeting held with Commissioners of Finance on the Fiscal Sustainability Plan (FSP).

Mrs. Adeosun disclosed that a conditional Budget Support Facility to provide financial relief to State

Governments was being developed by the Federal Government.

The minister said that the loan facility for the 36 states would be N50 billion which would be access by states that meet the condition for the loan and will also be accessible in every three months with a repay-

ment period of 18 months; explaining that “the loan is a bond guaranteed by the federal government.”

n June 8, 2016, Nigerians woke up to the shocking passing away of Stephen Okechukwu Keshi, former coach of the country’s senior national team, the Super Eagles. Following his demise, condolences and tributes have been pouring in from Nigerians and foreigners alike, all attesting to his superb playing skills and as a coach.

We also are joining others in sharing this moment of grief, even as we commiserate with his family and the sports community at large over this great loss. There is no denying the fact that Nigeria has lost a great sport gem. Born on January 23, 1962, in Azare, Bauchi State, Keshi attended St. Finbarr’s College, Akoka, Lagos which is famous for its many successes in the Principal Cup competition among Lagos based secondary schools.

After leaving secondary school, Keshi joined the then African Continental Bank (ACB) FC, Lagos and later New Nigerian Bank FC, Benin City. After a short stint with those clubs, he left for Cote D’Ivore in the mid-eighties to play for Stade D’Abidjan and later Africa Sports.

Always desirous of living out his dream in the big league, Keshi headed for Belgium, where he played first for Lokeren and the country’s top club side, Anderlecht. Later, he moved to France to play for RC Strasbourg. Famously called the ‘Big Boss’, the former national coach was in the team that played for Nigeria at the 1994 FIFA World Cup. He also appeared in five African Cup of Nations championships for Nigeria and was part of the team that won the 1994 African Cup of Nations.

On retirement from Nigeria’s national football team, Keshi was ap-

pointed coach of the Togo national team in 2004. In 2006, he helped bring that country’s team to their first World cup tournament. With his Togo assignment over, he was appointed coach of the Mali national team from 2008-2010. By 2011, he was invited by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) to head the country’s national coaching team.

To prove his mettle, Keshi in 2013 propelled the Super Eagles to the African Cup of Nations title, therefore becoming only the second man to win it both as a player and coach.

Ever aiming for the sky, Keshi’s coaching skills came on display when he helped the Super Eagles reach the round of 16 for the first time at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. He remains the only African coach to have helped two nations qualify for the tournament and the only black African to coach in the knockout phase of a World Cup. From all that was said of him, no one could deny that Stephen Keshi brought élan, depth and unmatched professionalism to the game of football on the African continent.

He was a talker, a brawler and a politician and had the thickest hide and deepest laugh of anybody at any Africa Cup of Nations over the past two decades. While we mourn this great loss, we are consoled by the fact that Keshi lived a humble and dutifully life to his country and compatriots alike.

No tribute captured this essence than that by the South African Football Association President, Danny Jordaan: “At 54, Keshi was one of the bright young coaches coming out of Africa and having been a captain and solid player during his playing days, you can’t find a better individual whose life was wholly dedicated to the game of football”. We need not say more. Adieu.

News Analysis Sack: Beyond the threat to banks, others Sam Nzeh

ÏÏÏThe threat by the Federal

Government to withdraw the operating licence of any bank and telecommunication company that failed to yield to its earlier directive to stop mass sack of workers in their employ, has heightened the need for a review of policies that have given rise to the action by the organisations.

As the last count, no fewer than four banks had sacked hundreds of their workers for various reasons not unconnected to dwindling profits and unfavourable policies.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, made the threat on Monday while addressing world leaders at the ongoing 105th session of the International Labour Congress organised by the International Labour Congress in Geneva, Switzerland.

He said: “We will go a step further if they continue in their current sack spree. We know what to do. After all, the banks have their licenses given by the government. We know what to do. They need to comply. They need to come to the negotiation

table.

“We did that in the oil industry and we succeeded. Even if you are going to layoff, there is a way to declare redundancy, there is a process. Section 20 of the Labour Act says it. You must call the unions and discuss with them. You don’t just treat them as slaves in their own country and you want us to keep quiet.

“We want them to maintain the status quo. As far as I am the minister of labour, I will protect the interest of workers; same to the telecommunication companies, they are also talking about compiling lists without discussing with anybody.”

The threat is commendable.

However, beyond it, the Federal Government must look inwards to identify policies and actions that have made it possible for banks and others to retrench workers and discontinue them.

Fact is that banks, telecommunication firms and others retrenching workers are doing so largely because of the worsening economic conditions in the country at present which is aggravated by government policies.

So, as long as the economy continues to nosedive and government refuses to jettison policies and actions that are unfavourable to businesses, workers are bound to be laid off.

Obiano wins Zik Prize for Leadership James Eze

Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano has won the 2015 Zik Prize for Leadership. Governor Obiano is first in a list of three governors which include Seriake Dickson of Bayelsa State and Ibikunle Amosun who also emerged winners in the Good Governance category of the Prize.

Interestingly, while Obiano is being honoured for two years of sterling performance, his cowinners are both well into their second terms in office having served their first terms of four years each.

The Prize which is administered by Lagos-based Public Policy Research and Analysis Centre (PPRAC), will be handed to the winners in a colourful ceremony being planned for Sunday, June 19, 2016 in Lagos.

In a personal letter dated June, 6, 2016 conveying the offer of the Prize to Governor Obiano, the Chairman of PPRAC,

Prof. Jubril Aminu, the Centre expressed optimism that the governor would attend the Prize-giving ceremony which will hold at the Civic Centre in person to receive the honour.

legation that authorities of Nigerian Army had, in the last 17 months, been engaging in illegal deductions from soldiers salaries as alleged by some of them. This were the words of Director of Army Information (DAPR), Col. Sani Usman.

In a letter to the Director of Army Finance and Accounts, the soldiers want the authorities to unravel the mystery behind the deductions that has been on for up to 17 months. They also alleged that despite being promoted, they have not seen any significant improvement in their salaries to reflect their new ranks.

The soldiers in their letter, specifically mentioned that a staff sergeant, who is on a monthly

According to the Minister, the proposed facility will be conditional on the implementation of a comprehensive 22-point Fiscal Sustainability Plan (FSP) that was unanimously agreed by State Governors during the National Economic Council meeting that was held on 19th May, 2016.

She explained that the overall aim of the programme was to support States to overcome current fiscal challenges whilst reforming

financial management to ensure their long-term viability.

The FSP highlights five key strategic objectives: To Improve Accountability & Transparency, Increase Public Revenue, Rationalise Public Expenditure, Improve Public Financial Management, and Sustainable Debt Management.

The fiscal reform action plan to be implemented by States mirrors the ongoing public financial management reforms being undertaken by the Federal Government.

This according to the minister, include: biometric capture of all civil servants, the establishment of an Efficiency Unit within each state, implementation of Continuous Audit, improvement in Independently Generated Revenue (IGR) and measures to achieve sustainable debt management. Access to the proposed facility will be directly tied to the attainment of the fiscal reform

milestones under the FSP. “This is not a ‘bail out’, but rather a necessary short term intervention that is conditional on a comprehensive fiscal sustainability reform plan, and which is ultimately intended to set the States on a path towards fiscal sustainability and support the FG’s drive to reflate the economy, she added Responding on behalf of the 36 states commissioners, the Jigawa State Commissioner for Finance, Umar Namadi, thanked the Federal Government for making the facility available, saying “it is very important step we are going to key in to access this fund.

Dudafa is facing 23 counts charge bordering on alleged N5.145,004 billion fraud.

He will be arraigned along one Iwejuo Joseph Nna who is also known as Taiwo Ebenezer and Olugbenga Isaiah.

The accused persons allegedly committed the offences between June 11, 2013, and June 2015.

In the charge sheet signed by Rotimi Oyedepo, the anti-graft agency alleged that the accused persons used different companies to commit the alleged offences.

Some of the companies allegedly used in committing the alleged offences includes Seagate Property Development & Investment Limited; Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited; Iwejuo Joseph Nna and Pluto LUTO Property and Investment Company Limited; Iwejuo Joseph Nna and Rotate Interlink Services Limited.

Senator Ahmed Makarfiled National Caretaker Committee of the crisis ridden Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Tuesday’s reacted to Senator Ali Modu Sheriff ’s Monday’s forceful takeover of party’s leadership with a declaration that he (Sheriff) is acting the script of the governing All Progressives Congress (APC) to destabilise the party.

The PDP caretaker committee specifically alleged that Sheriff has

been contracted by the APC for this purpose.

The committee made the allegation, just as it became known that the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the party, its elected Governors and its caucus in the National Assembly will meet today over the developments in the party.

The Director General of the PDP Governors’ Forum, Osaro Onaiwu, who confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday in Abuja, said the purpose of the meeting is to find a lasting solution to the crisis bedeviling the party. He, however, added that

The Makarfi caretaker committee claimed that it has “credible intelligence report” about a meeting last Sunday night meeting between Sheriff and an un-named APC governor from North West where it was agreed “to give full security and financial support” to the embattled former Chairman (Sheriff) to exacerbate the crisis in the PDP. The primary objective of the whole scenario, the Committee said, was to prevent PDP from presenting a candidate for the Edo governor-

ship elections, or in the very least to prevent the PDP from offering a serious challenge to APC. It will be recalled that embattled Senator Sheriff and people suspected to be thugs had on Monday stormed the PDP National Secretariat where he reclaimed the chairmanship position of the party.

However, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, a member of the caretaker committee in charge of publicity, while addressing Journalists in Abuja on Tuesday, said Sheriff and his supporters were being used by the enemies of the PDP to destroy the

party and to prevent it from reorganizing itself in order to provide a credible opposition and alternative platform for the forthcoming Edo State gubernatorial election and 2019 elections.

Prince Adeyeye, a former Minister of State for Works under the last administration, said, “While we are still trying to understand the role of the police in the entire saga, it is curious that the police made no arrest of the thugs who openly brandished various dangerous weapons in and around the premises of the secretariat in full glare ofue police.

Officials of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), on Tuesday, raided the residence of Sen. Musiliu Obanikoro in Ikoyi, Lagos.

A man, Kenneth Mbegbu, has been arraigned for an alleged involvement in fraud before a Lagos State Magistrate court, presided over by Magistrate. Aje Afunwa.

The suspect, Kenneth Mbegbu (39), was alleged to have committed the offence sometimes in December, 2015 at Abati George Street, Lawanson, Surulere, Lagos state.

He was arraigned on a four-count charge bothering on pretence, forgery and stealing, preferred against him by the police.

The defendant was said to have, with the intent to defraud, forged the signature of Mr. Emmanuel Omon on Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) cheque number 38783516, dated 26 January 2016, with a face value of four million, nine hundred and fifty three thousand (4,953, 000) naira, which he issued to one Mrs. Eno Udoh, the Managing Director of Speedo Energy Resources Limited, with the intent that it may in any way be used or acted upon as genuine whether in Lagos state or elsewhere.

Kenneth on the same day at the same place, also forged the signature of Edith Mbegbu Omon, on Guarantee Trust Bank (GTB) cheque number 38783516, dated 26 January, 2016, having the same face value with the first cheque, which he issued to Mrs. Eno Udoh, the Managing Director of Speedo Resources Limited.

was confusion on Tuesday when some students of Baptist High School, Adeeke, Iwo came to school putting on their church regalia.

The students specifically appeared in regalia similar to choir robes, celestial church garment, caps and other church accessories like cross.

When the Daily Times

correspondent visited the school around 08.00am, Muslim students were also seen on hijab.

At about 08.35am, some of the students on Christian regalia stormed the school premises and headed to their various classes.

The outfit however excited their colleagues who hailed and shouted on sighting them.

As the students were entering their classes, members of Christian Asso-

ciation of Nigeria followed them.

Asked what they came to do, one of the CAN members responded, “We are here to monitor that our children are not also sent back.”

Although, most of the teachers were confused, they didn’t chase the students of the class for appearing in their churches’ regalia.

Teachers and principal of the school declined comment.

PDP Crisis: Youths threaten takeover of party within 7 days A coalition of youth groups within the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has given leaders of the party seven days to resolve all pending issues relating to the ongoing crisis in the party or they would takeover.

Briefing journalists at the end of their meeting on Tuesday, at the Wadata Plaza National Secretariat of the party, the chairman of the group, Aderemi Olusegun, said they were saddened by the “unabated internal wrangling” beset-

ting the party.

He said as concerned youth, they found it necessary to come together to take a firm position in the interest of PDP members nationwide.

Mr. Aderemi said the youth had waited enough for the party’s leaders since the Port Harcourt convention to amicably resolve the lingering problem of leadership.

“We are giving the leadership of the party (which includes the BOT, Governors’ Forum, warring

groups and other stakeholders) a 7-day ultimatum to resolve this intractable but avoidable rancour.

“However, if this is not resolved, we shall be compelled to mobilize all concerned youths nationwide to take over the affairs of the party, as we have started putting in place an effective structure to take over the party secretariat,” he said.

Mr. Aderemi said the PDP as a party is bigger than individuals and groups, adding that they youth had resolved to “henceforth not

tolerate anyone to take the party for a ride”.

Hon Monday Igbuya has reaffirmed his positions on the future his party in the state saying: “the PDP is fully planted everywhere in Delta State and nothing will threaten Okowa’s re-election in 2019. Against the backdrop of moves to make Nigerian youths participate more in governance, the House of Representatives on Tuesday considered a Bill seeking to make it compulsory for the inclusion of youths not less than 35 years into the Federal Executive Council, (FEC).

The bill which passed second reading at plenary is coming on the heels of a similar one seeking to reduce the age qualifications for interested candidates to contest for the positions of presidency, governor and senate in the country to 30 years.

The Bill, entitled; “A Bill for an Act to alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to enhance political inclusion and participation of young people in governance in Nigeria” was sponsored by Raphael Igbokwe (PDP, Ahiazu/

Ezinihitte Mbaise, Imo).

The Bill seeks to amend Section 147 of the constitution by adding a new sub-section (3) to read; (3) Any appointment under sub-section (2) of this section by the President shall be in conformity with the provisions of section (3) of this Constitution.”

Further, “provided that in giving effect to the provisions aforesaid the President shall appoint, (I) At least one minister from each state, who shall be an indigene of the state; (ii) At least one minister who shall not be more than the age of thirty-five years.”

The Bill is also seeking to amend section 151 to add a new sub-section (2) to read; “(2) The number of such advisers and their remuneration and allowances shall be as prescribed by law or resolution of the National Assembly, provided that at least one of the Special Advisers shall not be more than 35

If they say after their trial, their names will be revealed that will be understandable when they might have been true with their trials and are been convicted, the government should not hesitate to publish their names so that all Nigerians will know them and amount recovered from each of them. ÏÏÏAlthough the clamour for de-

velopment of the North East zone has been intense, Senators from the zone are not speaking with one voice on where to locate the Headquarters of the proposed North East Development Commission (NEDC) as they sang discordant tunes during debate on a bill for that purpose.

The problem, however, stalled the final consideration of the Bill on North East Development Commission during Tuesday plenary.

Notwithstanding Senators in general rejected a clause in the Bill which recommended 5% of total

revenue made from Value Added Tax (VAT) of the federation as a means of funding the proposed Commission.

Both the executive arm of government and the National Assembly have been synergizing efforts towards rebuilding the North East zone which has been ravaged by the Boko Haram war which started since 2009.

Different countries as well as International donour agencies had at different times promised to assist the government of Nigeria with funding on the development of the troubled zone which economy has been seriously paralysed.

Disagreement among Senators

from the zone had ensued when Senator Aliyu Wakili (APC Bauchi South), suggested that Bauchi should be made the Headquarters of the Commission.

A joint committee that worked on the bill had failed to indicate in its report where the Headquarters of the proposed commission should be cited.

The Committee’s Chairman, Senator Abdulazeez Nyako ( APC Adamawa Central) while presenting the report said, “Since the report presented to us on this proposed commission by the joint committee the bill did not indicate where the Commission’s headquarters should be cited, I most humbly recommend

Bauchi for that purpose”.

His submission, however, prompted other senators from the zone to recommend their state capitals for the commission’s headquarters.

While the Senate Leader, Ali Ndume ( APC Borno South) and Senator Abubakar Garbai (APC Borno Central), recommended Maiduguri, Senator Bayero Usman Nafada ( APC Gombe North) said Gombe should rather be considered being located at the Centre of entire zone.

The development, therefore, prompted the senate to stand down the consideration of the Report on the advice by the Deputy Senate President, Ike EKweremadu.

Representatives, on Tuesday charged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to embark on the distribution of voter cards not collected before the conduct of the 2015 general elections, as well as embarking on the continuous registration of eligible voters.

Passing a resolution sequel to the adoption of the motion sponsored by Rep. Shading Mutiu Alao, the House said it was imperative for the electoral umpire to begin the continuous registration of voters and distribution of voter cards and therefore, urged the federal government to pro-

vide funds to INEC to discharge its constitutional functions as at when due.

The lawmakers mandated the House Committee on Electoral and Political Parties Matters and Legislative Compliance to ensure compliance by INEC with the House resolution.

While moving his motion, Alao said that the country practices the presidential system of democracy which involved the direct voting by eligible citizens for candidates of their choice in general elections.

According to him, the Electoral Act, 2010, empowered INEC to make voter cards available to registered voters well ahead of voting days, add-

ing that the manner INEC handled the distribution of voters’ cards during the 2015 general polls disenfranchised millions of Nigerians nationwide.

He expressed worry that while some states got a large percentage of voter cards, other states like Lagos, “with higher voters, got far less voter cards, culminating in mass disenfranchisement of eligible voters”.

The Peoples Democratic Party lawmaker from Lagos State asserted that the uneven distribution of voter cards may, in some cases, produce unpopular candidates resulting in triumph of the majority, which is antithetical to all known democratic tenets.

Meanwhile, the Southern Nigeria Christian Elders’ Forum and the Christian Association of Nigeria, South-East zone on Tuesday condemned recent attacks on some Christians in the North.

ace music producer and singer, Babatunde Okungbowa, better known as OJB Jezreel, Mabel, (Mama J) has expressed rude shock toward the sudden demise of her husband.

Okungbowa passed on on Tuesday, June 14.

It would be recalled that Mabel had, in 2013, donated her kidney to save the life of her husband after he was diagnosed to have had a

kidney problem.

Mabel, in a chat with Daily Times, disclosed that her husband’s death was a great shock to the members of the family, especially us the wives and children.

She said, “Having donated my kidney to my husband in 2013, we believed everything was going to be alright which was until about few weeks ago when he complained again. Words cannot express the pain that I feel right now, I pray to be strong in this trying time.”

Ibrahim, an investigator with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), made this known when he testified in the trial of the former Head of Service, Stephen Oronsaye, in Abuja on Tuesday.

Led in evidence by the Prosecuting Counsel, Mr Adebisi Adeniyi, she said that it was also discovered that N14 billion had been stolen from the pension fund of the HOS. ``Sometime in 2010, EFCC and other anti-graft agencies were invited for verification of pension in the civil service, during that time, my colleagues discovered a payment mandate for payment of pensioners bearing 32 names. ``This was suspicious to them

and based on that, they requested for further information on the mandate and the statement of account from the office of the Head of Service. ``It was confirmed that some of the names on that list were fake pensioners. ``Based on this, the EFCC instituted a pension fraud team to properly investigate activities of the Head of Service in terms of pension payments. ``I was drafted to be a part of the team along with 10 of my colleagues,’’ Ibrahim said.

The witness said that the team wrote letters to all the banks where the Head of Service had accounts with to furnish them with the statements of all the accounts operated

by Head of Service for pensioners. ``Based on their replies and letters written from the office of the Accountant General of the Federation, we discovered that the Head of Service was operating 66 illegal accounts. ``We also discovered that there were different modus operanda used by the pension office to syphon pensions fund into their account. ``We discovered that about N14 billion has been stolen from the Pension funds of the Head of Service. ``The modus operanda included payment made into accounts of different companies for illegal and non-existing contracts. ``Others were the use of ghost pensioners whereby names were

inserted into pension payrolls and payments made to them even when they were not pensioners. ``Another was the National Union of Pensioners and the Association of Federal Civil Service Retirees, both received payments from the pension accounts which were illegal payments. ``For example, the National Union of Pensioners received over two billion naira from the pension account.’’

The witness said that the vast majority of the amount was withdrawn and handed over to one Shuaibu, who was also presently standing trial in one of the courts.

She said her team discovered through investigation that over N600 million was paid to several companies for biometric contracts.

Ibrahim, however, said this was with the exception of one company, which actually did some semblance of the contract. ``The company’s name is Innovative Solution and Uptrach Communications Limited. All the remaining payments were for non-existing contracts.’’

At a point in the course of her testimony, the witness requested that she be allowed to use a chart to illustrate her findings.

But this was objected to by the defence counsel on the grounds that using the charts would be against fair trial.

Mr Oluwale Aladedoye, counsel to Mr Osa Afe, the second defendant

held that the witness should be able to give her evidence based on her findings without the use of a chart.

He added that the use of the chart would be prejudicial to the defence team and therefore urged the court to disallow the procedure.

The prosecuting counsel, however, said that the objection to the use of chart was misconceived as according to him, it is only meant to refresh the witness’s memory and not to be tendered as evidence. ``The essence of the document is to assist the court arrive at justice.

There is nothing prejudicial in allowing the witness use the document to demonstrate the findings of her investigation.’’

The judge, Justice Gabriel Kolawole, held in his ruling that he shared the opinion of the defendants that tendering the chart would be prejudicial.

Kolawole added that he was however bordered by the position of the prosecution counsel that the chart was only intended to assist the witness demonstrate her findings.

He said that the witness did not appear to have a loss of memory but rather appeared clever and clear headed of evidence she was giving.

He, therefore, disallowed the use of the chart by the witness.

In continuation of her testimony, the witness attempted to give oral evidence of a statement made by the second defendant to the EFCC but was stopped by the judge.

Retirees shut down Imo over unpaid 71 months pensions Val Okara Owerri

Union of Pensioners (NUP), Imo state chapter, staged a mass protest on Tuesday over non-payment of their pensions for upwards of 71 months by the state government.

The retirees used the opportunity to draw President Muhammadu Buhari’s attention to the disrespect for pensioners by the Imo state government, noting that, ‘Non-payment of pension is corruption.’

Briefing newsmen, the NUP Chairman, Chief Gideon Ezeji lamented that pensioners in the state have never experienced

the level of abandonment and hardship they are facing under the Governor Rochas Okorocha administration.

On the claim by the state House of Assembly that part of the problems of the pensioners was huge pension burden inherited from previous administration, Ezeji dismissed the assertion as untrue and unfair.

He explained: “When Chief Achike Udenwa was governor, pensions were paid though not comprehensively. It was the same for Ikedi Ohakim.

When Ohakim left office, civil pensioners were being owed only two months pension while local government workers were owed three months. Today, Civil pensioners are owed 13-16

months as at May, 2016; Local Government pensioners, 1417 months; retired primary school teachers, 23-26 months; Imo Broadcasting Corporation pensioners, 36 months, and Alvan Ikoku College of Education pensioners, 68-71 months. It is indeed outrageous, how senior citizens are treated in Imo state today.”

Chairman of the Association of Retired Permanent Secretaries, Chief Fabián Agba lamented the impunity of the state government and said, “We cannot fight corruption without obedience to the constitution and laws of the land unless we want to foster anarchy. The resurgence in militancy and other armed agitations may not

be unconnected to the fact that constitutionalism has been set aside by government and the process of law jettisoned.”

He stated that, “When a governor refuses to pay pensions, he has breached the constitution he vowed to uphold.”

Lagos commences internship for tertiary students ÏÏÏThe Lagos State government

has commenced an internship scheme for final year students of tertiary institutions across the state, tagged ‘Ready, Set, Work,’ an initiative aimed at equipping fresh graduates with necessary skills to become job creators rather than job seekers.

The scheme, which is being anchored by the State’s Ministry of Education, commenced on June 11, 2016 with the training

of over 1,500 students on basic digital skills.

The scheme is an intervention of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, aimed at providing Entrepreneurship and Employability training skills for final year students in Lagos State tertiary institutions.

Over 2,000 students filled the application form for the programme, out of which 500 were selected to participate in the pilot edition.

Nigeria Army, under the auspices of Operation Safe Haven (OPSH), on Tuesday, grieved as its Commander, Major General Tagbo Ude, handed over leadership of the command as a result of the compulsory retirement exercise of senior military officers carried out by the military high command recently.

Buhari: One year of stewardship

t was, therefore, a welcome relief to Nigerians when Muhammadu Buhari was declared winner of the 2015 election and sworn in on May 29 the same year. One year down the line, has this administration justified its existence?

What type of change has the Buhari government brought to Nigerians – is it a positive or a negative one?

On the positive front, the Buhari government realised early enough that the state governments were pauperised and could not pay salaries and discharge other sundry responsibilities. As a sensitive, pro-people government, it quickly embarked on a bailout policy to the state governments. There is no doubt that that singular step helped immensely in rescuing the states from bankruptcy.

On security, it is obvious that this t administration has degraded, nay decapitated Boko Haram. In fact, the government has taken the battle to the enclave of the insurgents - the much – dreaded, Sambisa Forest.

The numerous internally displaced persons (IDPs) have been taken better care of even as it is not yet Uhuru.

The main victims of Boko Haram are Northerners living in the North Eastern part of our country. Government’s attention in terms of reform and rehabilitation, expectedly, has been focused on people from these areas. Thus far, those non-Northerners who died and suffered severe losses from Boko Haram attacks, that is, those from the Eastern and Western parts of Nigeria as well as South-

South, have remained unattended to. The Government should do well to support the next-of-kin of dead fellows and wounded ones. Similarly, the soldiers who have been waging

these wars against the insurgents do not seem to have been properly taken care of. The plight of the wounded is no better. Ideally, insurance covers should have been provided to these

soldiers.

On the issue of corruption, President Muhammadu Buhari through the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has dragged numerous high profile persons to courts to either prove their innocence or face the wrath of the law.

This move has somehow shown the citizens that the era of unbridled corruption and impunity is over. The list of such people is long, including the former National Security Adviser (NSA) Rtd. Col. Sambo Dasuki; the former Aviation Minister, Chief Femi Fani-Kayode; the National Publicity Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Olisa Metuh, etc.

Against the accusation of prosecuting only non-APC members, the President has shown non-partisanship in his fight against corruption by not interfering in the trial of the Senate President and APC chieftain, Chief Bukola Saraki.

Sadly, this state of stability, of order and of happiness which Hobbes and Kant sought several decades ago, still eludes Nigerians today. With Boko Haram and Shiite Muslims in the North; Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) in the East, Niger Delta Avengers, the Red Egbesu, Water Lions and Isoko Liberation Movement in the South-South, Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) in the South-West, the unity of Nigeria is only but a mere mental phenomenon.

Depleting oil revenue need for diversification

urrently, Nigeria’s economy is faced with enormous challenges- Twenty seven of the 36 states are unable to pay workers’ salaries, the existing infrastructures are dilapidated, while new ones are not in place. Moreover, power generation has degenerated significantly, the financial system is crumbling, and foreign investors are shunning Nigeria’s bonds and stocks, while companies are laying off workers in hundreds due to inability to pay salaries. In addition, a surge has hit the prices of commodities and the cost of living has doubled, regional security challenges and incessant protests from- Niger Delta Avengers, kidnappers, religious extremists, Biafran Movement, Fulani herdsmen among others threaten Nigeria’s economy.

The economic woes have been attributed to the crashing oil price.

Over the years, Nigeria’s oil revenue keep experiencing significant setback

on monthly basis. In December 2014, gross oil revenue recorded was N480bn, in January 2015- N460bn, in February 2015- N401bn, in March 2015- N315bn while in April 2015N282bn. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Statistical Bulletin for 2015 quarters, at N1.859 trn, Nigeria’s crude oil revenue for the 2015 fiscal year dipped by 37.47% from N2.973trillion recorded in 2014. In 2016, the fall continued to the lowest level in more than five years.

Nigeria’s failure over the years cannot be disconnected from massive corruption, mismanagement, tax evasion, and oil theft, contract breach among the political and economic elites.

Nigeria is running a very expensive political system, 58% of the nation’s allocation is spent at federal level, while 32% goes to the 36 states and 10% tothe 774 Local Government Areas; a larger percentage of this revenue goes to governance and jumbo pay for politicians such as estacode, N9bn as legislators’ annual

ward-robe allowance, N500m security vote monthly to state governors, pension for life for governors/deputy governors after serving four or eight years among others.

With Nigeria’s current economic plight, it is evident that the Federal Government can no longer continue to bailout states, while capital projects are not feasible. Due to incessant attacks on oil facilities in the Niger-Delta, many oil companies are shutting down operations, if this persists, Nigeria’s source of revenue might be blocked. One of the most important things in Nigeria today is for unpaid workers to be paid, create jobs for the people so that they can afford shelter, feeding and schooling for their households.

Agriculture has proven to be potent, if deliberate and meticulous investments are made into agricultural infrastructures such as irrigation facilities, rural roads, farm security, and storage facilities to improve production and value-chain, Nigerian local farmers in their millions will be

moved from subsistence farming to commercial agriculture. This will not only help Nigeria to feed her population, but huge revenue will be generated from export of commodities.

Agriculture can be a big business if made efficient, policies that allow credit channel to the system must be encouraged. There will be a boost in agriculture if market that is more viable is created. Cameroon, Ivory Coast among other African countries is strengthening agriculture in their country with significant results; Ivory Coast emerged the largest cashew nut exporter, taking over from India.

Agriculture provides a way out of the on-going economic challenges confronting Nigeria. Agriculture is life, with vast land and resources, favourable weather and good soil minerals, Nigeria, as a nation should diversify her economy into agriculture to transform the nation at the shortest delay.

Ex-FGC GO, Badejo budgets N25m for indigent students Esther Taiwo In his determination to assist government eradicate poverty to the barest minimum, former General Overseer of Foursquare Gospel Church in Nigeria, Dr. Wilson Badejo, has budgeted the sum of N25 million to sponsor tertiary education of not less than 50 indigent students in public institutions across the country.

The cleric made this known at the 9th annual Wilson Badejo Foundation (WBF) lecture titled, “Nigeria and the Rising Tide of Poverty: What Workable SocioEconomic Agenda for the Underclass”, which took place at the Nigeria Institute for International Affairs (NIIA), Victoria Island, Lagos, in commemoration of his 69th birthday.

According to him, his passion for the poor is such that he detests someone, for reasons beyond his own fault, going without a meal a day. “It was this passion that actually spurred me into venturing into establishing the Foundation to cater for the needs of those subjected to poverty by the vagaries of our society’s economic system characterised by the neglect of our leaders who have large appetite for unscrupulous wealth”, he said.

He said in WBF, this is the season to whet the less privileged in the society who have been progressively sidelined over the years by the economic system.

Badejo stated that no fewer than 300 indigent students have benefitted from the annual scholarship award, adding that one of the beneficiaries, Jamiu Olayinka Ajifowoke, an Aeronautical Engineer is now gainfully employed in one of the foreign airlines operating in the country.

Guest lecturer at the event, Prof. Isaac Adeyemi, Vice Chancellor, Bells University of Technology, Ota in Ogun State, said corruption in Nigeria remains the most important obstacle to economic and social development.

He said corruption has remained the main cause of systemic waste of the country’s resources and therefore the main cause of poverty in the country.

Sub-Saharan varsities brainstorm on creating skilled work force No fewer than 43 sub-Saharan African universities on Tuesday in Abuja began discussion on how to create skilled work force for the sub-region.

The two-day workshop was organised by the World Bank Education Team for Sub-Saharan Africa in collaboration with the Association of African Universities (AAU) and the National Universities Commission (NUC).

It is entitled ``The First Partnership for Skills in Applied Sciences, Engineering and Technology (PASET) Regional Benchmarking Capacity Building Workshop’’.

Discussion at the workshop will focus on improving benchmark on science, technology and mathematics in universities in the sub-region.

Giving an overview of the workshop, Mrs. Sajitha Bashir, Practice Manager, World Bank, said it was aimed at getting African universities to learn from one another and properly benchmark themselves. ``The essence of the workshop is to have African universities to benchmark themselves against each other, to learn from one another about how well they are doing in preparing their students for the labour market. ``We are using a very good international methodology that has been adapted to suit African conditions. ``It is an Africa-led initiative which will help African institutions to improve themselves and consider how data generated can be analysed and understood. ``It will also look at how results

“If they want to honour anybody, let them name hall of residence after the person. Senate buildings and other buildings are there. It makes the schools lose their bearing”.

“They think they are immortalising the persons but they are not doing that. If you want to immortalise anyone, you can have a national holiday. Look at the attempt to turn University of Lagos to M.K.O University.

It failed because its students and alumnus did not agree. You can use other institutions in the schools to recognise them. This is common in the state university”.

On the scrapping of post -UTME, the former two-time chairman of Ikeja Local Government Council, supported government decision but added that the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) should also be scraped.

This was disclosed by the chairman of the NUT in Lagos, Segun Raheem, in an exclusive interview with the Daily Times, noting that the union had long advocated for the scraping of Post-UTME because rather than screen candidates on their proficiency in English, tertiary institutions were subjecting candidates to another round of examination similar to what they had done in the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

Raheem further accused tertiary institutions of exploiting candidates, adding that rather than charge candidates the agreed sum of 1,000, different exorbitant amounts were been charged.

He said: “Post-UTME was to test candidate’s fluency in the area of English; JAMB test is

The Examination will be written between the hours of 9.00a.m and 2.00pm with each paper taking 2 hours.

The Lagos State Examinations Board has disclosed that the students will be tested in both core subjects and elective subjects.

The core subjects include English Studies, Mathematics, Basic Science, Basic Technology, Civic Education, Social Studies, Cultural and Creative Arts, CRS/ IRK. PHE, French, Computer Science/ICT and one of Hausa, Igbo or Yoruba Languages. While the elective subjects include Agric Science, Home Economics, Arabic Studies and Business Studies.

Candidates are therefore expected to choose one or three from the elective subjects to

they want, but the admission process is becoming bureaucratic”.

Speaking further, the Lagos NUT boss disagreed on the assumption that the standard of education in the country had dropped, adding that what has dropped is the teaching method and the ability of students to pass examinations, which according to him, was as a result of poor parenting and distraction from social media, among others.

“Standard of education has not dropped; what has dropped is the teaching standard unlike those days when you teach students and you would be sure they would pass. Now that parents are no more parenting and if you don’t parent well, there would be lacuna. The advent of social media, technology, etc, have also added to the problem and most of the children are not matured to learn,” Raheem added.

He stressed that his union had initiated a free health test for teachers in Lagos State, adding that health officials would be stationed at each local government area headquarters for the test.

“We have finalised arrangement to move down to our local government areas to carry out free medical test for our teachers. We would be taking medical experts to go round. The firm would charge per- teacher but we would pay. They would go to the local government headquarters and they would do the test and those who have health challenges would be detected before it gets worst,” Raheem stressed.

145,345 students to write BECE in Lagos make up minimum of thirteen (13) or maximum of fifteen (15) subjects to be seated for in the Examination.

Students are urged to study hard for better performances in the examination and remember that the result will be used for their Onward Transition into Senior Secondary School.

Parents/Guardians are enjoined to prepare their children/ wards for the examination by making available all materials needed for the examination and ensure that they take their meal before the examination commences.

Group sensitises students on environmental cleanliness Edokpolor Osayande A Non-Government Organisation, Conservative Environmental Growth and Development Centre (CEGDEC), recently sensitised students of Oke-Afa Junior and Senior Secondary School Lagos and Kings Court Academy Dabi, Abuja on the need to keep the environment clean in commemoration of World Environment Day. Addressing the students, head of the team, Mrs. Maryam Olayeni, said that World Environment Day is a United Nations Environment programme (UNEP) of personalising environmental issues to enable everyone identify his/her roles and responsibilities to become the agent of change in support for sustainable and equitable environmental development.

She stressed the need for students to keep their environment clean through proper waste management and pollution control as a way to maintaining a serene environment safe enough for humans, plants and animals, adding that the commemoration also coincid-

ed with flag off of the clean-up of Ogoni land in Rivers State by the Federal Government.

Speaking on “Go Wild for Life”, Olayeni simplified and interpreted that students should embrace all living things as part of the ecosystem. Examples of animals killed for fun in the society were highlighted by students during the interactive session as lizards, butterflies, birds, worms and ants while mosquitoes, pests and rodents are bred as a result of dirty environments that must be eradicated.

She also cited that animals are important features to environment, saying “by eating less fish and poultry meat,’ We Go Wild Life’ as more materials and resources like animals feeds and time are used to provide meat than plant. Sustainable lifestyle is all encompassing and it begins with simple change in our attitude to feature the ecosystem”.

Lagos pays N561m for 44,005 students as WAEC fees

Benjamin Omoike In fulfillment of her promise to lessen the burden of parents in the academic pursuit of their children and wards, the Lagos State Government has paid the examination fees of 44,005 SSIII students who sat for this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Speaking at the weekend, Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Idiat Oluranti Adebule, said the state government paid West African Examination Council (WAEC) the sum of Five Hundred and Sixty One Million, Three Hundred and Forty Six Thousand, One Hundred Naira (N561, 346,100.00) for the examination and administrative fees

of the candidates.

The students were those certified fit to be presented to WAEC from public secondary schools in the state after the 2015 Screening Test for SSIII Students. Their data was therefore captured and uploaded for the 2016 WASSCE for school candidates.

Adebule, whilst presenting the score card of the Ministry of Education in the last one year, noted that the administration had made giant strides towards improving the education sector of Lagos State.

Furthermore, the Deputy Governor disclosed that 545 Vision Corridors have been created in primary schools across the state in the last 12 months. This is in continuation of the Eye Health Programme for the prevention of blindness amongst primary school pupils by taking the services closer to the end users.

Training and capacity building courses were organised for 861 teachers who handled the eye screening of the pupils using the Vision Corridor. Those with visual challenges were referred to the nearest public hospital. According to Adebule, this exercise has resulted in the issuance of 399 reading glasses and 409 Special Order glasses to needy pupils.

- How’re you getting on with your travel preparations?

- So you’ve got your visa to travel!

- Lucky you!

- By the way, were you given the number of months/years you asked for? It’s that time of the year when the above conversation will be topical in cities in Nigeria.

And this goes on till about August. It’s summer in the Europe. Soon schools will go on a long vacation and children will travel with their parents. A visit to any major airport will show a flurry of activities at the peak during these months, day or night. From Lagos to Abuja through Port Harcourt airports, Nigerians could be seen in long queues clutching or pushing their luggage to the check-in counters.

Children travelling with their parents can be seen holding on to Papa or Mama. The check-in area is a beehive of activities. We love to travel – for business or pleasure. Only on flights from or to Nigeria does one see children and young adults in Business and First classes – zones usually considered the reserve of the wealthy.

British Airways can testify to this. I used to work and live in the Cote d’Ivoire. I remember how I used to have the Economy Class

cabin to almost myself on flights from some European countries to my Ivorian destination.

That was in the days of SABENA, the defunct Belgian airline. That and some other reasons might have contributed to the airline company going burst. But Nigerians enjoy travelling. Flights in and out of the country are always full.

Many Nigerian families are already processing their visa applications at various embassies. Some have made reservations on their preferred airlines.

Others are yet to do so. By the end of June the pitch will be fever high among those planning to travel for the summer. Not all visa applications will be granted for it’s a different story this year. Nigerians are now being viewed and treated like the migrants from other countries – those shown in television footages, those running away from their countries because of war, religious intolerance or economic depression. These three factors and more are also present in our country.

displaced persons situation (IDPs); there’s also the nation-wide economic downturn. So brothers and sisters just brace yourselves for having your visa applications processed with our social and economic situations at the back of the minds of those consular officers.

Heard from the grapevine that the visa request of one of our top business guru was cut down to just 10 days by a European country. He had requested for a multiple entry for six months. He often travels to the said country for business. He was given a 10-day visa only. No one can say if and when the protocol staff of this mogul will ever challenge the Embassy on this.

True the economies of these European countries are in shambles. They are also confronted with terrorism, both local and

international. But that’s no reason for them to show disrespect to any visa application from Nigerians. Consular staff – local and international – should be trained to show courtesy to the Nigerian passport holder.

Every Nigerian – moneybags or just ordinary folks like you and me – is now seen as an economic migrant running away from the economic downturn in the country.

The European Union regulation requesting that respect be given to family members of an EU citizen isn’t even respected in Nigeria (may be all over Africa) by some of these European embassies.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs should look into this.

Even when the visa is obtained, prepare yourself for a hostile reception at the entry point of the

foreign country of your destination. There’s a renewed hostility to the green passport. The type of hostility experienced in the 80s and 90s when all Nigerians were seen as fraudsters and all sorts.

It’s as if the immigration staff at the borders have been coached to say or do things that would provoke the holder of the green passport. Some of them would look through your passport as if it was an ‘Oluwole’ passport. They ask that you produce your return ticket and want to know what you’ll be doing during your stay within their walls. Don’t get excited or provoked by their ill manners especially when these immigration officials are young men and women old enough to be your children/grandchildren.

Keep your cool and answer their questions as calmly

as possible. Remember that they are only their Master’s Voice.

Foreign countries should understand that though Nigerians enjoy travelling, they also love to go back home to bond with their kith and kin, because ‘ajo ko le dun ko nile ma re le’ – no matter how pleasurable the journey is, the wayfarer always yearns to return home.

‘How driving for just an hour a day can make you pile on 5lb’ is the title of an article in the London’s Mail.

A Professor Takemi Sugiyama of the Australian Catholic University said that ‘prolonged time spent sitting in cars – in particular over one hour per day – was associated with higher total and central adiposity (fat and a more adverse cardiometabolic risk profile)’.

Further on in the article the reader got to know that the research was based on the ‘driving habits of 2,800 adults’ from Australia.

Those who carried out the research should come over to Lagos to see that their findings would never apply to the drivers – both private and professional – who sit for hours in the Lagos traffic. Our professional drivers do more than an hour in the traffic while taking their ‘oga’ or the family either to work, schools, markets or any other destination.

Some of these drivers can even pass – and most have attempted to pass - for their ‘oga’ when it’s only them in the car. It’s rather the fuel queues that can and should be associated with ‘a more adverse cardiometabolic risk profile’ in our case.

Stakeholders wonder, could this be (part of) the Thoughts of the Creator when He embedded so much in the oil producing areas?

Going back in time, it would be recalled that leader of the Ijaw Revolutionary Volunteer

Force, the late Isaac Jasper Adaka Boro, a civil war hero it was who first stirred that region into national and international consciousness. On February 23 1966, Boro triggered a 12-day revolution that battled the late General Aguiyi Ironsi’s federal military government; and for a country still reeling under the first bloody military coupe of the time, it was one shocker too heavy. For one, the Nsukka University student leader (chemistry major) policeman and Nigerian soldier had assumed an iconic status, and not least of all, the Niger Delta Region.

Successive governments had paid lip service to the area until the dawn of the 4th Republic when things came to a head: Dr. Peter Odili who became governor of Rivers following a ‘touch ‘n go’ electoral contest with

It is on record that Asari Dokuboh owns a university plus a broadcast media conglomerate in neighbouring Benin Republic. Both erstwhile Christian Association of Nigeria President Ayo Oritsejafor and Delta chieftain, Chief Edwin Clarke have universities of their own.

If all these are not enough, what could possibly be?

Chief Ebenezer Isoke of the All Progressives Party (APP) was to sow in the whirlwind for a second term in office. By the dawn of 2003 elections, sleep had become murdered; the heavyweights in Rivers and neighbouring Bayelsa states couldn’t sleep anymore.

Two prominent cult gangs, namely Diwell and Digbam had been recruited for the reelection; at the end of the day, new capons had been unleashed on an unsuspecting citizenry. Asari Dokuboh, Ateke Tom held sway in Rivers while Boy Lop became the Bayelsa variant, and the now wanted Tompolo was Niger Delta lynch pin.

Asari Dokuboh wasted no time unleashing his Niger Delta Volunteer Force (NDVF) over the region. At the point, the die was cast.

The next damming phase was a free willing regime of kidnapping and pipeline vandalisation. The Obasanjo presidency was rattled to no end by the new age brigandage; the creation of a Ministry of Niger Delta Affairs and the transformation of a lame duck Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC) into a Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) did very little to assuage pent up emotions and feelings.

At this point, a devil making rule had taken root. Late President Umar Ya’Adua seemingly doused tension with a hurried amnesty programme; President Jonathan made frantic efforts at seeing the exercise through.

There’s no denial that under Goodluck Jonathan, billions of Naira got pumped into the Niger Delta, typified by Rivers, Bayelsa and a slice of Delta State.

The now new brigade, the puzzling Niger Delta Avengers which announced its coming by blowing up pipelines in the same bedraggled region is, to say the least, so vulgar that one is pushed to vomiting. It is a wonder if the clam of human rightists and rule-of-law mongers has got a name to call this one.

Their demands are so incongruous one needs a clinical test for his sanity. A Russian historian and novelist, Alexandra in his famous line said, Violence can only be concealed by a lie, and the lie can only be maintained by violence.

Niger Delta aborigines, automotive and defence expert and public policy analyst, Sir Oseme Ohaihegbe (with booming voice); and film producer and critique, national affairs analyst, Peter Victor Ohai were guests to ace broadcaster, Jones Usen news affairs programme, Kubanji Direct directly, and time could never had been enough to chew the mystery from the home boys’ point of view.

“It is unlikely that the configuration of their demands in any way reflect their true motives,”

began Sir Oseme and continued: “If you do a strategic asset mapping of the country, you will see we are a mono-product economy which means all the earnings as a country come from the Niger Delta I am worried that targeting these assets for the purpose of the demands they have made known will not bring recognition or relevance to the Avengers. Without mincing words, I think they are a senseless group. They should be hunted and smoked out of the creeks.”

Neither for the Avengers nor against the federal government, Victor Ohai worry even more that approaching violence with violence had never solved any issue.

“When I heard of the explosions, I said, O no, not again.

Not again in the sense that violence is not a solution to any issue; also, vengeance has never done anyone any good.

“However, I’m not going to throw away the baby with the bath water nor because of the bad messenger, throw away the message. I wouldn’t say their demands totally are unreasonable, but the methods they have adopted is what I have a problem with.

“For example, they’re not the only ones that desire the implementation of the recommendations of the last national confab.

I totally detest and do not like their approach, but sometimes

something has to acquire nuisance to draw attention, but destroying national assets, killing people is out of the question.

“Moreso the assets you’re destroying are in your own land; every time you blow up a pipeline, you’re also destroying the environment the more. Having said that, the reaction of the government is not something that is entirely right: I believe in non violent approach to conflict resolution.

“Anywhere in the world, Northern Ireland, Afghanistan, Iraq, etc, violence failed the governments and at the end, after great destruction of lives and property and environment, they eventually sat down and talked.

What I am saying is that government approach should not be the Odi way because we have learnt that two wrongs do not make a right.”

Considering the cost of restoring a blown crude oil carrying pipeline, the environmental degradation, geometric effects etc, Sir Oseme thought of a less implicating, environmentally degrading option would have made sense.

“At the risk of saying dislodging any other asset is an option, but if they consider cutting a bridge for example, like one leading from Patani to Port Harcourt so that people cannot cross from one end to the other; that will draw enough attention.

But a crude oil carrying pipe-

line that is generating income for the country is senseless to say the least. Getting that environment back into shape, natural and agricultural activities may never be recovered fully again; and if at all, not in the lifetime of the so-called Avengers,” Oseme said.

The Avengers, who are they?

“Looking at this dispassionately, we are dealing with a group without frontier, faceless, like what we have in the Northeast; but that is not saying they are not totally reachable. It happened before with MEND; a group like this has someone in the know in one corner writing these conditions and statements for them,” Ohai said. Likening them to a spoilt child begging for attention, the analyst said: “Like a spoilt child who wants attention, you see him playing pranks, throwing objects at sensitive places to be noticed and asked, what do you want? What the child is doing probably is begging for attention and you have to handle him with wisdom and patience.

“Now, this spoilt brat, by blowing up these national assets which is wrong and condemnable - but now that are doing that, what should federal reaction be? We all remember the late MKO Abiola saying, ‘when you’re in a China chop with a mad person, what you do is, pet him and sensibly get him out first; after you get him out, you can flog him all you want.

But if you flog him inside that China shop, he will destroy everything there and everyone would be the worst for it.”

Reacting to the Odi account and N15billion efforts of past administrations to make peace, Ohai said it was giving too little

too late: “It has become like reparation because that is a land that has been raped for so long, until international community began to draw our attention. And even then, leaders didn’t heed the warnings or the oil companies in the region. Though OMPADEC, NDDIC, Amnesty, etc, were all efforts to broker peace, yet the region is still a very difficult terrain.”

Worried also that not every person in that terrain is in support of what is going on, Ohai likened the Avengers to the insurgents in the Northeast, the Fulani herdsmen and so on: “For the sin of a few, the majority and the environment are taken to the cleaners. Like ISIS also, they are millions, may be billions of Muslims out there who are not in support of their ideologies and what they’re doing, yet as small as they are, ISIS activities are already painting every Muslim as if they’re terrorists – which itself is wrong.”

Way forward “We must be able to separate the rascals from the rest; read the lips of the leaders and the body language of people from that region this time around. If you go in there with OBJ’s Odi approach of ‘go in there and kill everything that has breath in sight’, it would be wrong.”

In all, the embattled people of the troubled region, stakeholders and the aborigines are in one voice ask that President Muhammadu Buhari should look at the security architecture of the Niger Delta, go back to the drawing board, structure out a workable template and approach the cause of the region’s volatility knowledge and understanding.

Militants’ attacks could cost N’Delta region 13% derivation, says Abdulsalami Pita Chikwem Minna

Former Head of State, General Abubakar Abdulsalam has stated that the continuous attacks on oil installations by the Niger Delta Avengers could cost states in the region the 13 percent Derivation from the Federal Government.

Abdulsalam stated this on Tuesday when the leadership of the Niger State House of Assembly paid him a courtesy visit at his Uphill Residence in Minna to felicitate with him

on the occasion of his 74th birthday.

He urged the militant group to embrace dialogue with the Federal Government as a means of finding a lasting solution to the current crisis rocking the Niger Delta region.

The former Head of State said the continuous attacks on oil installation by the Niger Delta Avengers were doing more damage to the region, adding that with this people in the region will not have land to farm and will not be able to go fishing as well.

Abdulsalam said the attacks have done more harm than good because the people in the Niger Delta region is suffering more from the effect, adding that they would be the biggest loser at the end of the day as much harm is done to land and aquatic lives of the region.

He said that the activities of the militants will also possibly lead to drop in the funding of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Workers in Ekiti State, on Tuesday, began a threeday fasting and prayer to seek God’s intervention in their unpaid, five months’ salaries and other entitlement owed them by the government.

They declared that no amount of bribery and allegations and blackmail leveled against their leaders by the Fayose administration would deter them from fighting for their rights.

allegedly made by Governor Ayo Fayose that they were fighting the government over low sitting allowance being paid them as members of the allocation sharing committee.

Enyimba Fed Cup tie vs El-Kanemi moved C

AF Champions League contenders Enyimba have been granted a postponement of a Federation Cup Round of 32 clash against fellow NPFL side El Kanemi Warriors as a result of their continental date against Zamalek of Egypt in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

The People’s Elephant, winners of Africa’s most prestigious club competition in 2003 and 2004, host Zamalek at the Adokiye Amiesiamaka Stadium in one of the Day 1 matches of the group stage of the Champions League.

“Enyimba has appealed for postponement of the encounter, and the NFF has granted this plea. They are flying Nigeria’s flag and the NFF has promised to give them all the support in their quest for glory,” said Emmanuel Adesanya, head of the Federation Cup. However, the remaining 15 matches of the men’s competition and eight matches of the women’s competition will take place on

Wednesday and Thursday, with Abuja, Makurdi, Enugu and Lokoja hosting three matches each.

The encounter between Plateau United and Dreams FC of Makurdi, earlier slated for Damaturu, has been moved to Abuja, while the Crown FC/Niger Tornadoes clash will now take place in Benin City instead of Akure.

With the Enyimba/El-Kanemi tie postponed, the match between FC IfeanyiUbah and Lobi Stars at UJ Esuene Stadium, Calabar is the only all-NPFL game this week.

Eleven matches of the men’s competition and three matches of the women’s competition will take place on Wednesday, with high –riding Rivers United up against Kaduna United in Makurdi, Enugu Rangers against ABS FC in Bauchi, Shooting Stars testing Almar FC in Agege (Lagos), Kano Pillars up against Prime FC in Lokoja.

The women’s competition is in the Round of 16, and Cup holders Sunshine Queens battle Osun Babes in Ibadan, Delta Queens take on Ibom Angels at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri and Katsina Queens tackle Gift of Life FC in Abuja.

Kaduna Utd scalp R ivers United technical manager, Stanley Eguma, wants an outright win for his side against Kaduna United in the round of 32 of the Federation Cup. United beat Papilo FC 4-3 in a thrilling round of 64 game in May to reach this stage of the competition.

Eguma wants a similar performance from his charges if they are to progress even further in Nigeria’s oldest football competition.

“It is a very big match for us. The Federation Cup is a unique competition.

“The competition is no respecter of persons.

“Kaduna United is an experienced side as they have played in the (Nigerian top flight)

in the past.

“We will not take them for granted,” Eguma told supersport.com.

The Rivers United trainer however expects the lower tier club to enjoy certain advantages over his side in the game.

“Kaduna United have not played quite as many games this season as Rivers United.

“There is also a little bit of fatigue for us (United play five competitive games in the next 12 days).

“We will however fashion out a way to contain them as the target is to win that game,” he said.

Rivers United and Kaduna United will meet in the round of 32 of the Federation Cup on Wednesday at the Aper Aku Stadium, Makurdi.

he disciplinary committee of the Nigeria Football Federation have fined Enyimba N500,000 and directed the Nigeria Professional Football League champions to formally apologise to the management of Warri Wolves following the attack on the General Manager of Wolves Moses Etu by three Enyimba players during their league clash in Umuahia, reports Completesportsnigeria.com.

The management of Lobi Stars have also been handed a N2m fine for the unruly behaviour of their fans and officials during and after their week 18 clash against Nasarawa United.

Etu was verbally attacked by three Enyimba players, Joseph Osadiaye, Abu Azeez and Ikechukwu Ibenegbu before the start of the game.

The NFF disciplinary committee in a letter to the management of the club said it is aware of Enyimba’s efforts to reprimand the players through fines, but mandated the Aba giants to pay N500,000 to the LMC instead of the initial N750,000 they were earlier ordered to pay by the LMC. The committee also upheld LMC’s decision to sanction Lobi Stars for fans disorderliness in their matchday 18 fixture against Nasarawa United.

Lobi were also charged for the behaviour of their officials and supporters capable of bringing the game to disrepute.

The Makurdi-based club will pay a fine of N500,000 for throwing objects on to the field of play and for interrupting the game.

For encroachment on to the field of play immediately after the match versus Nasarawa United, Lobi will pay a fine of N500,000.

he Chinese businessman’s takeover of the recently relegated club has now been confirmed after he passed the Football League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test this week Aston Villa have confirmed the sale of the club to Dr Tony Xia’s Recon Group.

The deal, which will see the Chinese businessman acquire 100 per cent of the club from previous owner Randy Lerner for a sum reported to be around £60 million ($87.5million), was originally announced last month.

However, Dr Xia has only now passed the Football League’s Owners’ and Directors’ Test, allowing the paperwork to be completed.

The 39-year-old has been installed as Villa’s new owner and chairman.

In a statement confirming the sale, Villa added that a new board will be appointed later this week.

Champions League winner Roberto Di Matteo has already been named as Villa’s new manager and is reportedly set to be handed a significant transfer fund to overhaul the club’s playing squad following relegation from the Premier League in May.

he House of Representatives, on Tuesday, urged Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) to immediately pay the entitlements due to late former Super Eagles’ coaches, Stephen Keshi and Amodu Shuaibu.

The House mandated its Committee on Sports to liaise with the NFF to ensure that the payments were made without delay.

This was sequel to a motion under ``matters of urgent public importance’’ sponsored by Rep. Sam Onuigbo (PDP-Abia), which was unanimously adopted.

Presenting the motion, Onuigbo said that payment of the entitlements would serve as conscious effort toward cushioning any pains and financial pressures on the families of the deceased.

Onuigbo expressed worry that Shuaibu was being owed arrears of salaries running into many months.

According to him, Shuaibu was equally being owed by Edo State Government, having worked as the Director of the State Youth Football Development Agency, a position from which he resigned last year.

The lawmaker, who said that the two coaches served the country meritoriously,

pointed out that their deaths were huge losses to the Nigeria. ``These iconic Nigerians exercised leadership in football administration and impacted positively on the nation and the world in ways that their outstanding accomplishments brought happiness to Nigerians. ``Even in the periods of economic and political adversities, they died at a time like this when football as a sport enjoyed by Nigerians is taking a nose dive. ``Now, their demise is not only a huge loss to Nigeria and their families but to the international community as well, and we can understand the pains both families and Nigerians are currently going through. ``Nigerians and the international community as a whole have lost the experiences of these patriots and heroes of football, whose services have been lost forever.

Onuigbo further urged the Federal Government to immortalise the football icons who served the country selflessly so as to encourage younger ones to always give their best for the development of the country.

The two former national football coaches died within a space of four days. Keshi, 54, died on Wednesday, while Shuaibu, 58, died on Saturday.

nvestigations have revealed that the late former Super Eagles coach, Amodu Shuaibu, was owed N25 million in salaries, sign-onfees and house rent by the Edo State government before he died Saturday.

This was contained in the last letter written by the former BCC Lion of Gboko coach and addressed to Adams Oshiomhole and dated October 2015,a copy obtained by Daily Times.

It would be recalled that a cousin to the late Shuaibu, Nkuri Afegbua, had said the former Super Eagles coach died of frustration.

Hospital mortuary where the remains of the former football tactician was kept before his movement to his hometown of Okpella, for burial, said Shuaibu was being owed by both Edo and federal governments.

Afegbua said Shuaibu’s presence in Benin the week he died was to pursue the payment of the money being owed him by the government of Edo. According to the letter by Shuaibu, the amount being owed him includes, Nm for outstanding sing-on-fees for 2013/2014 for consultant/technical adviser, N3 m for House rent for two years (2012-2014 and 2013-2014) at N1.5m per year.

The balance is N16m, representing payment for coaches and other supporting staff for the period of August 2014 – July 2015.

Opeoluwani Akintayo Crude oil outages in Nigeria have been a blessing in disguise for the global oil market, shooting up price to over $50 per barrel in the last few months.

Just in the wake of global oil price crashing below $50 from mid-2014 due to over-supply from few OPEC countries like Iraq, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and others- and the global oil market looking upon OPEC to freeze oil production to boost prices, a new militant group in Nigeria’s Delta, Niger Delta Avengers, NDA, came in to ‘save the day’. Coupled with wildfire crack-ins from Canada, and political crises in Venezuela which reduced the glut, there was suddenly no need for OPEC to show its super power as one of the most powerful cartels to set the global oil price.

Although Nigeria is a strong

member of OPEC, recent woes brought upon it by the NDA, has become a stepping stone for the world oil market price. However, U.S producers and other non-OPEC countries fear oils trapped in the country (Nigeria) may crash price once it finds its way back into the market.

Fayose blames Fayemi for Ekiti workers’ woes Joy Ekeke The Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has said the current inability of the state government to pay workers salary was caused by his predecessor in office, Kayode Fayemi present Minister of Solid Minerals Development.

According to Fayose, the huge debt profile inherited from the immediate past administration which took N25 billion bonds from the Capital Market and also took N31 billion commercial loans, is responsible for the poor financial condition of the state and the challenges faced in the payment of workers’ salaries.

Fayose, who stated this while reacting to the no-shift-ground stance of the striking workers of the state, said about N1.2 billion is being deducted monthly from the state’s allocation to service the loans which the Kayode Fayemi administration took in the course of its four years in the saddle.

The governor opined that if the N1.2 billion being deducted is added to the state’s monthly allocations, his administration will not owe workers.

Speaking through his Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, in Ado-Ekiti on Sunday, Fayose took a swipe at the All Progressives Congress, which he said had been gingering the labour to remain adamant on the issue of the strike.

The report showed that the transactions were lower by 21.22 per cent or N2 trillion when compared with the N9.43 trillion transactions in

April.

The decline represented 36.55 per cent or N4.28 trillion.

A further breakdown showed that foreign exchange (FX) market accounted for 13.30 per cent of the total value against 16.69 posted in April.

The report indicated that Treasury Bills (T.bills) transactions continued its dominance, accounting for 43.80 per cent of the total market in contrast to 81.72 per cent posted in

April.

The Secured Money Market (Repurchase Agreements (Repos)/ Buy-Backs) accounted for 31.16 per cent during the period under review from the 30.47 per cent in April.

The report said that Unsecured Placements/Takingscontributed 2.41 per cent to the total turnover as against 1.39 per cent in the previous month.

Transactions in the FX market stood at 4.09 billion dollars, indicat-

ing a drop of 32.96 per cent against 6.10 billion dollars recorded in April.

The report also said that on a year on year basis, FX turnover declined by 65 per cent.

It added that member-member trades recorded 0.62 billion dollars in turnover for May, compared with 0.71 billion dollars recorded in April, indicating a decrease of 12.89 per cent.

Also, turnover in member-client trades stood at 3.47 billion dollars, a

decline of 35.59 per cent when compared with 5.39 billion dollars in the previous month.

The report also stated that the exchange rate at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) window remained flat at 196 per to a dollar.

It explained that the naira opened the month at 197.33 against the dollar at the inter-bank market and closed at 198.84 against the dollar, translating to a depreciation of 0.76 per cent.

Higher cost for electricity, transport, others push inflation to 15.6% - NBS Stories by Motolani Oseni The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), on Tuesday, said the Consumer Price Index (CPI) which measures inflation recorded a relatively strong increase, accelerated to 15.6 percent in May from 13.7 percent in April, its highest in six years, since February 2010.

The continuous hike in annual inflation has been said to have deepened the crisis of Africa’s biggest economy, with the headline index increased by 15.6 percent (year-on-year), roughly 14.9 percent from 13.7 percent recorded in April.

According to a current data obtained by Daily Times of Nigeria (DTN) on Tuesday from the official website of the Nigerian Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the acceleration in the inflation reading was the fourth consecutive month. The NBS said it reflected higher prices for electricity, transport and food.

“The increase in rates in May relative to April reflects an overall increase in general price level across the economy as all divisions which contribute to the Headline Index increased at a faster pace in May. “Year on year, electricity rates

as well as other energy prices continue to manifest as key drivers of the Core component of the CPI”, NBS stated.

The statistics office in its monthly report said that the Core sub-index increased to 15.1 percent in May, up by 1.7 percent points from rates recorded in the previous month.

“During the month, the highest increases were seen in the passenger transport by road, Liquid Fuel (kerosene), fuels and Lubricants for Personal Transport Equipment (Premium Motor Spirit) and Vehicle Spare Part groups,’’ it said.

The report further stated that imported foods as well as a drawdown of inventories across the country continued to push food prices higher.

It said that the Food Sub-Index increased to 14.9 percent in May, up by 1.7 percent points from rates recorded in April.

The report said that the food sub-index increased as all major food groups which contributed to the food sub-index increased at a faster pace.

“This is driven by higher food prices in fish, bread and cereals, and vegetables groups for the second consecutive month.

FG authorises EFCC to freeze suspected bank accounts In a move to strengthen the fight against corruption, the Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has authorised the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to freeze any bank account suspected of being used for financial crimes.

The anti-graft agency revealed this through its spokesperson, Mr. Wilson Uwujaren, who disclosed that some commentators have described the freezing of bank accounts of suspects being currently investigated as vindictive.

He explained that freezing of accounts suspected of being used for financial crimes was a mandatory investigative step backed by law.

He added that Section 34 (1) of the EFCC Act 2004 empowers the Commission to freeze any account suspected of being used for financial crimes.

Quoting the Act, Uwujaren said: “the Chairman of the Commission or any officer authorized by him may, if satisfied that the money in the account of a person is made through the commission of an offence under this Act or any enactment specified under Section 6(2) (a)-(f) of this Act, apply to the Court exparte for power to issue or instruct a bank examiner or such other appropriate authority to freeze the account.”

He added that similar provision in the Money Laundering Prohibition Act 2012 (as amended), also empowers the EFCC Chairman or his representatives to place a stop order on any account or transaction suspected to be involved in any crime.

Further, the CBN paid interest of N32.9 billion on the deposit through the SDF, while it earned interest of N3.68 billion on loans to banks through the SLF.

Indications are rife that due to the dwindling Nigerian economy, which has increased the level of uncertainties in the business and economic environment, most Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) are not willing to lend to each other and to the real sector of the economy, preferring to place their excess liquidity with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) for interest earning purposes.

The Standing Deposit Facility (SDF), which the banks use to access to place deposit with the CBN, rose by 23.64 percent to N616.13 billion by close of business last week.

The statement reads, ’This act of deceit was even the least of our worries. What got us worried was the desperate move of the only party left in the botched merger to link the name of MARAN to the merger that never was. ‘’We find it expedient to place it on record that neither MARAN as a body nor any of its bonafide members was part of the new group.

There are indications that the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) may not meet the target of N1tr it set for itself at the beginning of the fiscal year.

Investigations by The Daily Times revealed that in the first quarter of 2016, The Apapa command, which is the largest in revenue generation for the Service, lost a whooping N13billion in import duty.

The command generated a total of N61.7 as against N74.71 billion collected in the corresponding period of 2015 representing a N13 billion decline.

Controller of the command, Comptroller Willy Egbudin had in an earlier interview lamented that “If revenue collection con-

tinues to drop in flagship command of the Nigeria Customs Service, I wonder how other commands will get their own revenue, if revenue generation from Apapa is going down, that means revenue generation as a whole to the Customs will go down’ he said.

Similarly, the Tin-Can Command of the Service recorded a revenue shortfall of N2.7 billion in the first quarter of 2016.

The command generated N58.9 billion in the first quarter of 2016, and generated N61.6 billion in the corresponding period of 2015.

The breakdown of the commands’ revenue performance for 2016, indicated that N24, 858,625,588.00 was collected in January, N16, 856, 458, 800. 00 was collected in February, in the

month of March N17, 215, 979, 575.00 and in April N14, 342, 974, 003. 00.

However, the cumulative figure is lower than the recorded N221.6 billion revenues of the command in the first quarter of 2015.

The slump is expected to deteriorate further into the second quarter of the year as volume of imports continues to fall even much more than expected.

The problem of decline in revenue was further highlighted by the Comptroller-General of Customs, Col Hameed Ali, during a visit to the District Head of Gwadabawa, Sokoto state, Alhaji Lawal Zayyana where he stressed that the average monthly revenue of the service has now fallen to about N50 billion from an average N80 billion.

Economy diversification: NPA partners agencies, targets $1.2bn export revenue In order to achieve its revenue target of $1.2b, Managing Director of Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), Mallam Habib Abdullahi, has revealed that the organisation was going into strategic partnerships with other agencies as well as encouraging exports.

For Abdullahi, the primary responsibility of the NPA is to raise

more revenues for government and work to assist in expanding the economy and ensure the nation’s dependence on oil was reduced significantly. This the NPA is doing by encouraging export promotion and foreign direct investment.

He also stated that the agency was working assiduously to ensure smooth operations at the ports. According to him, they have so far has developed an inter-modal type of transportation system, railways and motor roads within the ports to ease congestions in the Lagos ports.

NiRA solicits stakeholders’ consent on internet governance framework Stories by Tony Nwakaegho The Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) has expressed confidence that the outcome of recent Nigeria Internet Governance Forum (NIGF) will further boost stakeholders focus towards common grounds for internet governance in the country.

NiRA in its bi-weekly e-newsletter described such framework for internet governance as critical in addressing the nation’s most critical and evolving issues on internet governance.

Rev. Sunday Folayan, president of NiRA, said “Overall, the outcome of the forum will further enhance consensus building among stakeholders on the framework for Internet governance in Nigeria, address the nation’s most critical and evolving issues on Internet governance, while advancing the nation’s position at the regional and global Internet Governance Forum”.

Meanwhile, the 2016 edition of the NIGF which was held recently in Abuja, Nigeria, with the main theme: “Harnessing Internet Governance for Inclusive Development and Smarter Nigeria…” brought about dialogue amongst stakeholders on how the Internet Governance Ecosystem potentials should be harnessed for Nigeria’s inclusive development, economic growth and ability for sustenance.

The Local Multi-stakeholders Advisory Group (LMAG) of the 2016 NIGF is made up of the Ministry of Communications (FMoC), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA) and

Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

The pre-event, for the forum was a Special Youth workshop held on the 1st June 2016 with the theme: “Connecting for Empowerment”.

The workshop chaired by Nasir Saidu Adhama, special assistant to the President on the Youth and Student Affairs, aimed to connect, empower and stimulate the youth in taking advantage of the opportunities that the Internet provides. Several business opportunities were discussed including strategy for accessing critical business resources.

“The impact of the Internet on the youth is to ensure they behave positively on the Internet. The youths were informed that with over Three billion Internet users worldwide, they have a large audience to market their brands and products to. The special youth workshop showcased several projects of Youths using embedded technology.

“Discussions ranged from Unleashing the power of Internet of Things (IoT) and Internet of Mind (IoM) for a smarter Nigeria, Harnessing indigenous innovation for inclusive development and the Implication of Free Basic on Internet neutrality and innovation in Nigeria,” Folayan said.

It was agreed that lack of sufficient Infrastructure, lack of adequate awareness, accessibility, affordability and skill gap were major setbacks for the inclusive development and penetration of the Internet in Nigeria.

Nigeria Internet Governance Forum is a renewed collaborative effort of internet stakeholders in the country to help provide a coordinated mechanism for domestic stakeholder’s participations in the local, regional and global

internet governance dialogues.

The effort has culminated into partnerships, coalitions and dialogues that redefine Nigeria position at the internet governance meetings. The 2013 edition took advantage of the NIGF multistakeholder platform to empower Nigerian youths.

The Forum has recorded so far a combined attendance by over 1,000 stakeholders since its inception in 2012.

Reps, Minister defer on new PostmasterGeneral’s appointment The House Committee on Communications seems to be disagreeing with the position of the Ministry of Communications with regard to the appointment of Postmaster General of the Federation.

This is sequel to the fact that the Committee has canvassed for the appointment of a career staff as the new postmastergeneral of NIPOST. But, Barr. Adebayo Shittu, minister of Communications, had stated that the stringent and prolonged processes in appointing a new postmaster general of the Federation (PMGoF), was to give room for the emergence of a business minded executive to drive the “new” NIPOST. The Minister had disclosed before now that the new PMGoF yet to be announced by President Mohammad Buhari, is not a career staff of NIPOST. However, Mr Saheed Fijabi, the House Committee Chairman said when he led the members on a recent visit to the Corporate Headquarters of NIPOST on oversight function in Abuja that career staff who has over years of service acquired a lot of experience and expertise, will be more than qualified to fill the vacancy.

Fijabi called for speedy appointment of another NIPOST helmsman, so that the agency could have a better focus and deliver quality service to Nigerians.

He urged NIPOST to continue to discharge its statutory functions, including the administration of stamp duty.

The Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Professor Umar Garba Danbatta has given kudos to the performance of the nation’s telecommunications industry in the first quarter of 2016 which recorded over N1.4trillion, representing 0.5 percent growth, adding that he is optimistic it would improve in the subsequent quarters of the year.

Danbatta made this disclosure while receiving a consortium of international investors led

by UBS South Africa, stressing that the commission would soon meet with operators over the recent auction of 2.6GHz spectrum, which saw only MTN Nigeria, bid for 6 out of 14 available slots.

“I think we are happy with the level of compliance to regulatory stipulations in general, minus the MTN incident, which cast some sort of shadow in our regulatory drive to ensure sustainability and stability of the industry.

“I am happy, we are putting that one behind us, and this is attested to by recent statistics by

the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) that the industry recorded a growth of 0.5 per cent to GDP in comparison to the same period last year.

“In monetary terms this is going to translate to over N1.4 trillion, only in the first quarter of this year.

“While other sectors of the economy are recording negative growth, the telecom industry has been recording positive growth and I think it is poised to grow even further in the subsequent quarters of the year,” he empha-

sized.

The EVC while fielding question on the 2.6.GHz spectrums auction, said: “We are doing a post mortem. And we have not yet met with the operators to find out why they did not bid, except one operator.

“The intention is to be able to know their reasons, and to know in what way the regulator can come in to relax some of the conditions in the process, if this relaxation can lead to more operators going for the remaining eight.

Med-View Airline has taken delivery of its Boeing 737-500 aircraft after undergoing a comprehensive check in faraway Estonia.

The arrival of the aircraft puts the number on its fleet at six while the new aircraft was immediately deployed for its Accra operations on Sunday.

The Managing Director /Chief Executive Officer of Med-View Airline, Alhaji Muneer Bankole received the aircraft on arrival at the Murtala Mohammed Airport two (MMA2) in Lagos alongside other top management staff of the airline.

The interior part of the aircraft was branded with First Bank logo but the MD explained that it was done to appreciate the bank for being its reliable partner over the years.

He said two more aircraft are also expected in the next one month to enable the airline open up the West Coast, start its Dubai operation and provide back-up for its London-Gatwick operation, among others.

He decried the difficulty in accessing foreign exchange by indigenous airlines, saying he bought dollar at N370 to bring back the aircraft.

He commended the efforts being made by the Minister of State for Aviation, Senator Hadi Sirika to address the challenges confronting the local carriers, urging him to impress it on President Mohammadu Buhari to realize that the local airlines are a driving force for the economy.

As part of efforts towards supporting their entrepreneurial drive, Dana Air has called on youths and teens in the country to avail themselves of the opportunities provided by the annual Teens Empowerment Conference.

The annual conference comprises of sessions on leadership, entrepreneurship, career discovery, and personal development.
