Had it not been for them I might not be here today. Had they not been on our parents and grandparents tv screens and stages, I might not be an artist in residence in this institution. I say this not only with the immediate gratitude of the past, as we usually mean it, but I say it acknowledging the responsibility that it gives me to the present and the future.

Alice Childress’ comedy/drama masterpiece allows us to laugh while re-visiting Broadway in 1957, through a 2022 lense. This story, written in the 1950’s as a contemporary piece, reveals to us, in a hilarious way, the legacies of the past that still live with us in today’s entertainment industry. Childress wrote about a particular time in entertainment when Black women were asked to play maids but never the glamorous, romantic lead. When Black men were stereotyped as inactive, lazy, absent, and unintelligent. When White women were relegated to being helpless and beautiful, and White men were required to save the day. Viewing this play through a 2022 lense allows for an examination of the past as ancestral; something that is not separate from us but a direct legacy. The history of entertainment and storytelling in this country is not a lesson that we often learn in school. It’s most likely among the things we must research and find for ourselves.

Why was the idea of Mammy created and how did she make it to the big screen? What is the history of the fictional character “Jim Crow” along with his namesake policy and legislation? The Southern Belle, the White Savior, the Great White Hope, the Femme Fatale; why and how were these tropes and stereotypes created, and how did we come to accept them as a part of the stories we wanted to see? This play tells a fictional story of several people I named above; ancestors in the entertainment industry who all wrestled with fitting only into the boxes that this industry would allow them to be viewed in.

This production of Trouble In Mind is the beginning of an invitation. The QR code connected to the research page is a collaboration between me and our dramaturg, Kamilah Bush, for the purposes of highlighting some of the issues that Alice Childress experienced and wrote about. We offer you a look back at these particular moments in American history and cinema. This website is by no means an exhaustive list, but merely an extension of our invitation. We encourage you to revisit the stories, movies, TV shows and plays built and told by our ancestors, and see them through new lenses. To go beyond our website to memes, videos, and reels with a new knowledge of entertainment that won’t allow for consumption with only the metric for success being, “ was it good?”, “ did it make me laugh”, or “did I like it?”. But rather, “What narrative is it offering me?”, “What is it trying to accomplish?”, “ What is its intention?”.

If we are looking backward to 1957 for the sake of moving forward in 2022, we all have a generational responsibility to that forward progression. A portion of my generational responsibility as the descendant of American storytellers, is to tell this story.

is truly humbled to be a part of Trouble In Mind. He recently graduated with his Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A) in Acting at Southern Methodist University.  Roles include Antonio in Cake Ladies (Dallas Theater Center), Marcus in Big Scary Animals (Theatre Three), Frank in Witch (StageWest), and Juliet and Mercutio in Romeo & Juliet (Great River Shakespeare Festival). In his spare time, Bradley loves streaming “Renaissance” by Beyonce, hanging out with friends and family, and weekend brunch.

DAVID COFFEE (Henry) made his theatrical debut in 1968. Since then, he has built a career that encompasses all fields of entertainment (with the exceptions of Grand Opera and the Circus); and audiences have welcomed him from Portland, Oregon to Portsmouth, New Hampshire. In addition, he has become known as a New En gland Tradition and the G.O.A.T. for his portrayal of Scrooge at Massachusetts’ North Shore Music Theatre (where the greenroom bears his name). MYIESHA J. DUFF (Understudy for Wiletta Mayer, Millie Davis) is excited for the opportunity to be a part of this amazing cast and perform with Dallas Theater Center! She has performed in several productions such as Sister Act (Deloris), Elf (Mrs. Hobbs), The Wiz (Glinda), Memphis (Felecia), Cuban and the Redhead (Gladys), The Color Purple (Celie), and Little Shop of Horrors (Crystal) She holds many titles including wife, songwriter, and author, but her favorite title is Mom. CLAIRE GREENBERG (Judy Sears) is so excited to be making her Dallas Theater Center Debut in this fantastic production. She was born and raised here in Dallas and ventured across state lines to get a BM in Musical Theatre and Vocal Performance at Oklahoma City University. Some of her DFW credits include A Gentlemen’s Guide to Love and Murder (WaterTower Theatre), Ragtime (Lyric Stage) and Elf: The Musical (Firehouse The ater). Other notable credits beyond DFW are The Music Man as Marian, SideShow as Violet Hilton, and Big Fish as Sandra Bloom. She is so grateful to her amazing family and friends for their continued love and support!

BOB HESS (Bill O’Wray) is a member of DTC’s Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company, last appearing on the DTC stage in The Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo, A Christmas Carol, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, he has appeared on nearly every stage in the Metroplex over the last 40 years, most recently in WaterTower Theatre’s I Am My Own Wife and Stage West’s regional premiere of The Children. The recipient of numerous awards from DFW Critics’ Forum and Broadway World, Bob is represented by The Mary Collins Agency and is proud to serve as an Assistant Professor of Theatre at University of North Texas.

MICHAEL MICHEL (Understudy for Al Manners, Eddie Fenton) is a recent Southern Methodist University graduate, and is thrilled to be making his Dallas Theater Center debut. He plans to be back for many many more.

KEN ORMAN (Understudy for Bill O’Wray, Henry) joins the Trouble In Mind cast in his second production as an understudy with Dallas Theater Center, having debuted in Our Town Nuestro Pueblo in 2022. Ken has performed across Texas and off-Broadway, including plays, improv, live-action stunt shows, anime voiceover, industrial and commercials. His film and television work includes STARZ, REELZ, TNT, Amazon and HBO Max. As a writer, his script Devil In Retrograde was recognized for exceptional storytelling and his plays Retired, Restless & Wrung Out and From A Distance Dad were workshopped in 2020 and 2019. As a producer, he leads the theatrical production of All About Bette, an Interlude with Bette Davis by Camilla Carr, starring Morgana Shaw with special narration by Robert Wagner.

JEREMY RISHE (Al Manners) is excited to make his debut at the Dallas Theater Center. He recently shot a leading role in Jay Craven’s next feature, Lost Nation. Prior to that he starred in the world premiere of The Sabbath Girl off-Broadway. Regional Favorites include The School for Lies, The Tempest, and The Skin of Our Teeth. He stars in the film The Marshmallow Mystery Tour currently in festivals, and co-wrote the film Jewtah Recent TV: “Invasion” (Apple+) and “Madam Secretary” (CBS). SAMANTHA SNOW (Understudy for Judy Sears) is very happy to be working with DTC for the first time! Some of her favorite roles include Phoebe in Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder (Theatre Frisco), Belle in Beauty and the Beast (GLCT), Ophelia in Hamlet (Odeum Theatre Company). She has performed on stages in New York, Branson and LA and was even once seen on the Broadway stage of Les Mis (ok so it was as a tourist but she was there!) She would like to send a big thank you to her wonderful husband, Derick, for all he does for her when she is running around like a crazy woman because she is too busy for her own good.

MAC WELCH (Eddie Fenton) is thankful to be making his Dallas Theater Center debut with such a brilliant team and script. Recent stage credits include Macbeth ( Fair Assembly) and Noises Off (Theatre Three). Film credits include Crime Alley, PARO, and Apartment 259. BFA: Southern Methodist University, 2020. TIANA KAYE BLAIR (Director) is a director, actor, educator, and culture worker based in the Dallas-Forth Worth metroplex. Her directing credits include: Spell #7, Dutchman, Mlima’s Tale, Libra Season, Working: A Musical, Hurt Village, Rage, and Twelfth Night The Musical. Some of her acting credits include: penny candy, Steel Magnolias, In The Heights, The Great Society, Hair, and The Mountaintop. Blair is also a member of Progress Theatre, an international touring ensemble committed to using art to encourage social consciousness, cross-community dialogue and cultural awareness amongst audiences diverse in race, age and spiritual background. She is proud to serve the Southern Methodist University Department of Theater, teaching SoulWork as a Professor of Practice of Acting and Movement. SoulWork is a comprehensive theater making methodology and pedagogy based in African American performance traditions, developed by Dr. Cristal Chanelle Truscott. This ensemble based method engages the artist’s cultural knowledge of self and community in efforts to inspire social consciousness with respect to artistic practice, performance, and curricula. MELPOMENE KATAKALOS (Scenic Design) is pleased to be working with Dallas Theater Center for the first time. She has designed over 100 productions on a variety of stages including the Arden, La Jolla Playhouse, SF Mime Troupe, California Shakespeare Theatre, and LA’s Cornerstone Theatre. In NYC, she has designed off-Broadway at the Clurman, HERE, La Mama, 45th St., and the Triad. International: Beijing and Singapore International Fringes, 2019 Prague Quadrennial. APRIL M. HICKMAN (Costume Design, Hair & Makeup Design) is a Connecticut-based costume designer, stylist, and costume illustrator for stage and film, originally from Denver CO.  Her most recent design credits include, Omar LA Opera/Spoleto Festival, ABCD (Barrington Stage), How to Catch Creation (Geva Theater Center). April currently holds a position at Wesleyan University as Assistant Professor in the Practice of Costume Design. She holds an MFA in Costume Design from Yale School of Drama and a BFA in Costume Design and Technology from The University of North Carolina School of the Arts.

DRISCOLL OTTO (Lighting & Projection Design) has previously worked at Dallas Theater Center on productions including The Beauty Plays and The Odyssey. Recently Driscoll designed lighting for Encores! Production of The Life, re-imagined and directed by Billy Porter, Lighting and Projections for Chicago Opera Theatre’s production of Becoming Santa Claus, Lighting and Projections for Houston Grand Opera’s Marian’s Song, Lighting for The Huntington Theatre Company’s production of The Purists directed by Billy Porter, Projection Design for Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s The Flying Dutchman,  Lighting and Projections for Iolanta at Chicago Opera Theatre,  The Summer of 2021, Driscoll was invited to Austria to design lighting for an outdoor environmental production of Turandot for Oper Im Steinbruch (Opera in the Quarry) Mr. Otto’s design work is seen frequently in NYC & in American regional Theatre and Opera. Driscoll designed lighting for productions of Legally Blonde and Rock of Ages for Norwegian Cruise Lines. CLAUDIA JENKINS MARTINEZ (Sound Design) is excited to be making her Dallas Theater Center sound design debut! KAMILAH BUSH (Dramaturg) is a playwright, dramaturg and educator originally from North Carolina and is the Literary Manager at Portland Center Stage. She holds a B.F.A. in theater education from The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and was an NC teaching fellow. Kamilah has spent several seasons at celebrated regional theaters across the country, including Triad Stage in Greensboro, NC, Asolo Repertory Theater in Sarasota, FL, and Two River Theater in Red Bank, NJ. Her play Nick & The Prizefighter was a semifinalist in the 2021 Bay Area Playwright’s Festival and won the 2021 Urbanite Theater Modern Works Festival.

RUTH E. KRAMER (Production Stage Manager) Previous behind the scenes adventures include twenty seasons and forty productions at the Pittsburgh Public Theater, the premieres of A Wonderful Word at Miami New Drama and Alabaster at Florida Rep. Theatre, as well as Alpine Theatre Project, Alabama Shakespeare Festival, Riverside Theatre, Maine State Music Theatre, St Michael’s Playhouse, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, Shakespeare Theatre Company, Arkansas Repertory Theatre, Pioneer Theatre Company, Weston Theater Company, and Manhattan School of Music. Ms. Kramer lives in Hell’s Kitchen NYC, proudly serves on the National Council of Actors’ Equity, and is a 2021 Stage Managers’ Association Del Hughes Honoree for Lifetime Achievement in Stage Management.

MARY RUTH KNACKSTEDT (Assistant Stage Manager) is excited to be back at DTC, where her previous productions include Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo, Cake Ladies, and Public Works: As You Like It. Most recently they stage managed If Pretty Hurts at Jubilee Theatre and Big Scary Animals at Theatre 3. They are a graduate of Southwestern University.

EDMUND SIMPSON II (Assistant Director) is a Dallas native and graduate of KD Actors Conservatory. He is  happy to be back at DTC as assistant director!  Edmund has been featured in Public Works Dallas’ production of As You Like It (Andy), The Wiz (Lion), How I Got Over (Jubilee Theater), Soul Rep Theater, and  ‘Amends’ short film, written and directed by Jared La’Pread. Being part of this production has been a great experience and Edmund is looking forward to working on more great productions that take on my generation responsibility. Let’s work and get into Good Trouble!

ASHLEY OLIVER (Interim Associate Production Manager) is a stage manager, designer, actor, and director from Arlington, Texas. She holds a BA in Drama from Prairie View A&M University and has been working in theaters around Dallas/ Fort Worth for 15 years. ANDREW J. BROWN (Director of Production) has been with Dallas Theater Center since March of 2020. He served as lead Production Manager on recent productions including Public Works Dallas’ 2022 production of The Odyssey, The Sound Of Music, Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo, and Tiny Beautiful Things, as well as the world premiere productions of The Supreme Leader and Cake Ladies. Previously Andrew worked with Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma (Oklahoma City, OK), Huntington Theatre Company (Boston, MA) and the Cape Playhouse (Cape Cod, MA). He holds an MFA in Production Management from Boston University and a BFA in Scene Design from the University of Oklahoma. he/him

SARAHBETH GROSSMAN (Artistic Producer) is a Tony Award®-nominated and Olivier Award-winning producer. Her credits include Broadway: Indecent; An American in Paris (Broadway, West End National Tour); Come From Away (West End); Dames At Sea; Ann and Stick Fly. Off-Broadway: The Irish Curse.  A graduate of the Commercial Theater Institute, Sarahbeth holds an MFA in Theater Management from the Yale School of Drama where she served as  Associate Managing Director of Yale Rep.  She is a proud member of the Broadway League, Theater Communications Group, National Alliance for Musical Theatre and the Producer’s Guild of America.
