FROM THE DIRECTOR “WHO ARE YOU? WHERE ARE YOU FROM? HOW DID YOU END UP HERE.” Those are the first words sung in Todd Almond’s musical theater adaptation of The Odyssey. Those simple questions are asked throughout the play. As Odysseus, the warrior hero, attempts to return home after a decade of war and another decade of adventures while lost at sea, he encounters strangers, monsters and gods, each of whom ask him to identify and define himself. Some greet him warmly. Some turn him away. Some assault him. One of the themes of the piece is about how a community should greet a stranger. Its ultimate hope is that we will recognize our shared humanity with the stranger and welcome them home. Homer wrote the epic poem, The Odyssey., sometime in the 7th or 8th century BCE in Ancient Greece. It’s one of the oldest works of literature still read today.

KEVIN MORIARTY

Nearly 3,000 years later, here in Dallas, Texas, we’re retelling this timeless story with a company of artists who lift my spirit as they act, sing and dance to bring this ancient story to new life. Dallas Theater Center’s Department of Public Works was born of a collaboration begun in 2017 with the SMU Meadows Ignite/ Arts Dallas initiative, under the visionary leadership of Clyde Valentin. Our production of The Odyssey. is the flagship program of DTC’s year-round community engagement. Featuring eight professional actors, all members of DTC’s Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company, and an ensemble of one hundred people from across our city, the production is a celebration of art and community that seeks to welcome the people of Dallas into the heart of Dallas Theater Center.

DTC’s annual Public Works pageant was first launched under the leadership of Dayron J. Miles five years ago, with the support of the AT&T Performing Arts Center and the inspiration of work pioneered by Lear DeBessonet, Todd Almond and the Public Theater in New York. Since then, under the galvanizing vision of Stephanie Cleghorn Jasso, artists from DTC have been building partnerships with some of the inspiring organizations that help our city thrive – Bachman Lake Together, Jubilee Park and Community Center, Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinic at Metrocare, and City of Dallas Park and Recreation’s Janie C. Turner and BeckleySaner Recreation Centers. We offer free weekly theater classes on site at each of our community partner organizations in the fall, winter and spring for people of all ages and experiences, and then, in the summer, we bring together participants from all of these neighborhoods to create a musical theater production. Due to the pandemic, for the past two years much of our community-based work has been virtual. Though we produced a Public Works video last summer, which was created on Zoom and then filmed outside with social distancing and other safety precautions, our production tonight marks our first return to a full, in-person pageant since the summer of 2019. Tonight, community members from each of our partner organizations - and many more artists of all skill levels from every corner of Dallas - will come together onstage, performing a version of The Odyssey that seeks to be as vibrant, diverse, and full of life as the city of Dallas itself. At Dallas Theater Center, we believe that theater is essential to the community, and that community is essential to the theater. Quite simply, theater belongs to ALL of us, not only a select few. Participation in the cultural life of the community is the birthright of everyone in a great democracy. Our city is at its best when all of us have the opportunity to create, and we are at our strongest and most joyful when we come together in person. Our annual Public Works pageant is a movement; a collective call-to-action in creating art and communities that reflect our nation’s founding democratic ideals of equitable access to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. We are all aware of the challenging times in which we live. Theaters have been closed for much of the past several years. People have often been have struggled to connect through shared, in-person activities. As the pandemic isolated us, many in politics and social media have encouraged further division. Many people are living smaller lives, leaving their homes less often, and congregating most frequently with a very small number of people whom they already know. Increasingly, the idea of engaging with strangers in our civic lives has come to seem dangerous. The simple questions that the characters ask Odysseus throughout his journey (“Who are you? Where are you from? How did you end up here?”) have become more and more rare for us to ask of others we encounter in our daily lives. These societal changes scare me. If left unchecked, these trends could reduce our ability to understand and respect our fellow citizens. We could lose our belief in the power of shared human experiences. We could fail to see the dignity and value inherent in each human being. We could split apart from each other and break into pieces. And yet for the past six weeks I have been filled with hope and joy for the future of our city. In telling this ancient story of family, loss and love, I have felt connected to the human condition across cultures, time and space. In telling this story with people of all ages from across our city, I have been inspired by how much we all have in common. After several years of being encouraged to live in relative isolation, I have found myself moved to tears when the entire cast sings the simple words, “welcome home,” in the final song of the show. I hope that in watching this production you will be overcome, just as I have been every day throughout this process, by the beauty and skill of the people of Dallas. That you will see a stranger as an opportunity for human connection. And that you will have hope for our glorious city that has such wonderful people in it.

DALLAS THEATER CENTER LAND ACKNOWLEDGEMENT We acknowledge the land beneath our feet as the ancestral home of many Indigenous Peoples including the Caddo, Wichita, Tawakoni, and Kiikaapoi, as well as the tribes that may have lived here and roamed the area – including Comanche, Kiowa and Apache – and those indigenous people whose names we don’t know anymore. We honor, revere and respect those who were stewards of this land long before we made it our home. We also acknowledge the neighborhood we inhabit as one of the original Freedman’s towns of Dallas built by those who were enslaved by European colonization.

DIANE AND HAL BRIERLEY RESIDENT ACTING COMPANY In 2009, with the generous support of Diane and Hal Brierley, Artistic Director Kevin Moriarty reinstated Dallas Theater Center’s resident acting company. His intent was to develop and nurture professional actors within the North Texas community and enable them to make Dallas their artistic home. At the same time, he sought to enhance Dallas Theater Center’s artistic profile and create ongoing collaborative relationships. The eleven-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
