A Christmas Carol

No one deserves to be hungry. But unfortunately, across the 13 counties served by the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB), nearly 700,000 people are experiencing hunger – including 1 in 5 children who do not know where their next meal will come from. This is unacceptable.

Since 1982, the NTFB has been addressing this complex issue by providing nourishment and hope to neighbors across our region through access to nutritious food. To accomplish this, we collaborate with a diverse feeding network of more than 400 food pantries and community organizations that meet hunger at its doorstep in their local communities.

Thanks to our network, volunteers and supporters like you, we provided access to nearly 137 million meals in our last fiscal year – the most ever in our history – including 52 million meals accessed through the SNAP program and 85 million through distributed nutritious food.

And the need continues.

The COVID-19 pandemic both exposed and exacerbated hunger in North Texas. Even as we cautiously emerge from our COVID response, our neighbors are confronting additional challenges as we face the highest inflation we have seen in 40 years. Families continue to remain vulnerable to the increased pressure of the higher cost of living, and the NTFB and our partners are here to ensure they have access to the food they need to thrive.

We also know that food alone will not end hunger. Hunger and poverty are inextricably linked, and we are committed to addressing the underlying barriers to food security through innovative collaborations and investment in our feeding partners who often provide critical wraparound services that empower our neighbors to achieve better health, education and financial stability outcomes.

This ambitious vision would not be possible without the support of the community. For 15 years, our partnership with the Dallas Theater Center has helped provide access to over 2.5M meals for our neighbors in need.

We like to talk a big game in the Theater. We toss around words like IMPACT and OUTREACH and phrases like AFFECTING POSITIVE CHANGE and INVESTING IN OUR COMMUNITY. And don’t get me wrong, these are noble aspirations, and I’m proud to

data, and analytics – the success-measuring tools of the commercial world – can be elusive in the not-for-profit sector. Which is one reason why producing this play

With A CHRISTMAS CAROL we actually have a clear, unmistakable measuring-stick to gauge the success of our efforts. Each year since we premiered this version (2013), DTC has partnered with the North Texas Food Bank (NTFB) to raise funds to support food-insecure households in North Texas. At the end of each performance, we point audience members toward ways to donate to this effort, and each year we trace our progress as we run the show. This provides us a way to track our tangible impact in real time throughout the holiday season. For (secret) data-nerds like myself, this is enormously satisfying and serves as a constant reminder that our work can translate to real, measurable POSITIVE CHANGE and INVESTMENT IN OUR COMMUNITY.

If projections hold true, at some point during this year’s run, DTC will hit the cumulative mark of ONE MILLION DOLLARS raised for NTFB since our partnership began. One dollar is equivalent to THREE MEALS for hungry North Texans, meaning DTC audiences will have fed over THREE MILLION MEALS to our neighbors in less than a decade. When faced with those numbers, A CHRISTMAS CAROL becomes the most vital and important story we tell. That’s why we tell it every year.

I should also say that this story doesn’t work unless you have a great Scrooge. We’ve been fortunate at DTC to have had a number of great Scrooges (Sally Vahle, Hassan El-Amin, and Chamblee Ferguson come to mind). But when I think of Scrooge, the face that pops into my head is Michael Connolly’s. This is likely because Michael was the first to tackle the role in this version. I played Young Scrooge that year, so part of my job was observing Michael and trying to pick up on his mannerisms. I learned a lot that year.

When it came time to cast this play, Michael was my first thought. I didn’t think he’d say yes, so I prepared a list of solid candidates. To my surprise, he seemed eager to revisit the role, and just like that a huge portion of my job was done. Having him back in Dallas, watching him sink his teeth back into a role he was built to play, has been a joyful reunion. I love this story. I love what it says about our capacity to course-correct and right the ship. I have loved getting to tell it through various roles over the years, and I am forever grateful and humbled to be a part of this team as we hit this important milestone with NTFB. I shall love it as long as I live.

LUCAS BIERRENBACH (Boy Scrooge, Turkey Boy, Ghost of Christmas Future) is extremely proud to join this production at Dallas Theater Center. Past roles in theater include Jojo in Seussical Kids, Flounder in The Little Mermaid Jr., and Roger in 101 Dalmatians Kids. Lucas is 11 years old and enjoys traveling and making music, as well as acting and dancing. BENJAMIN BROWN (Topper, Musician: Guitar, Bass, Keys, Euphonium) is a multi-instrumentalist, actor-musician, and music director originally from Houston now residing in Dallas. Previous acting credits include Joe Mauldin (Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story, Casa Mañana) and Man 2 (Ghost Quartet, Imprint Theatreworks). SABRINA DALY (Martha Cratchit) is honored to return to Dallas Theater Center’s A Christmas Carol. Prior roles include Fan and Ghost of Christmas Future in A Christmas Carol (DTC, 2019 & 2021), Understudy of Louisa and Brigitta von Trapp in The Sound of Music (DTC, 2022), Lavender in Matilda (2019) and Mush in Newsies (2018). KAT GLAZE (Musician: Fiddle) is grateful to be back at Dallas Theater Center for the 10th anniversary of A Christmas Carol. As the resident violinist and concertmaster for the Cathedral of Hope Orchestra and the renowned Turtle Creek Chorale, Kat is known for her soulful, passionate musicianship. As a fiddler, Kat recently made her debut with the Allen Philharmonic and performs with the band, 5 Second Rule. Notably, she played the role of the fiddling Ex-Girlfriend at Theatre Three in the regional premiere of the Tony award winning musical Once (2018). NICOLETTE GOSSELIN (Belinda Cratchit) was born 10 years ago in Dallas and has been stealing hearts ever since. Ni colette (aka Nico) was quite literally born into the acting world as her older sister YaYa started working at the age of 4! Nicolette started working in commercials and print at the age of 2 and started training for the screen at age 4 at DTV Studios Acting for TV & Film in Lewisville. A Christmas Carol is her first stage production role and she is already hooked and hoping for many more. Outside of acting Nicolette prides herself in being a good student, cook and loves contortion work!

FELIX GOODEN (Boy Scrooge, Turkey Boy, Ghost of Christmas Future) Felix Gooden is excited to return to the Dallas Theater Center for A Christmas Carol this year. An eighth-grader at Sudie Williams TAG Academy in Dallas, Felix fell in love with acting at a young age and grew up making and starring in his own home movies. He made his DTC debut earlier this year, performing as Si and Joe Crowell in Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo. He has also appeared in commercials for Coca-Cola and Children’s Health. In addition to acting, Felix continues to write and direct movies. In his spare time, he enjoys reading and running cross country. Felix would like to thank the DTC for this opportunity and all his family and friends for their support!

CLAIRE GREENBERG (Understudy: Female Ensemble) is so excited to be back at Dallas Theater Center for this holiday season. WYATT HARTZ (Peter Cratchit) is thrilled to be returning for his third Dallas Theater Center production, previously perform ing as Friedrich von Trapp in The Sound of Music and Boy Scrooge and Turkey Boy in A Christmas Carol. Other favorite roles include Les in Newsies Jr., LeFou in Beauty and the Beast Jr. (North Texas Performing Arts), Michael Banks in Mary Poppins and Charlie Bucket in Willy Wonka Jr. (Breitling Performing Arts). Wyatt is a fifth grader at Solar Preparatory School for Boys and has been performing on stage since the age of three. He would like to thank DTC for this opportunity!

SAM HENDERSON (Undertaker Man, Musician: Bass, Guitar, Percussion) previously appeared at Dallas Theater Center in The Mountaintop, Romeo and Juliet and Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo. Also, in the DFW area, Sam has appeared in Hillary and Clinton and Mlima’s Tale (Second Thought Theatre); Under the Skin (Circle Theatre); Two Trains Running at (Jubilee Theatre); King Liz (Amphibian Theatre); and A Doll’s House (WaterTower Theatre). Sam received his MFA in Acting from The Old Globe Professional Actor Training Program and is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Film at Baylor University.

BOB HESS (Understudy: Male Ensemble) is a member of DTC’s Brierley Resident Acting Company, last appearing on the DTC stage in Trouble In Mind,  The Odyssey, The Sound of Music, Our Town/Nuestro Pueblo, A Christmas Carol, and To Kill a Mockingbird. Originally from Louisville, Kentucky, he has appeared on nearly every stage in the Metroplex over the last 40 years, most recently in WaterTower Theatre’s I Am My Own Wife and Stage West’s regional premiere of The Children. The recipient of numerous awards from DFW Critics’ Forum and Broadway World, Bob is represented by The Mary Collins Agency and is proud to serve as an Assistant Professor of Theatre at University of North Texas.

IVAN JASSO (Bob Cratchit) is excited to be returning to the Dallas Theater Center stage after last being seen in Our Town/ Nuestro Pueblo. His past work includes: Office Hour (Circle Theatre); The Winter’s Tale (Dallas Theater Center), So Go The Ghosts of Mexico (Undermain Theatre); Native Gardens (WaterTower Theatre); Treasure Island Reimagined (Dallas Children’s Theater); Antony and Cleopatra (Shakespeare Dallas) and many more. He has performed regionally at the Los Angeles Theater Center, Hartford Stage, Huntington Theatre Company, and Alley Theatre. SKYLAR JOHNSON (Tiny Tim), age 11, is a 5th grader in Carrollton-Farmers Branch ISD. He was previously seen in Seussical JR (MR. MAYOR) and 101 Dalmatians (PATCH GROUP) at The Firehouse Theatre, and Have Yourself A Broadway Little Christmas at MainStage Irving*Las Colinas. SOPHIE ROSE KIRKHAM  (Martha Cratchit) is over-the-moon excited to be returning to DTC this year after appearing as Brigitta in The Sound of Music. She is a musical theater student of the Young Artist Training Program (YATP). She was most recently seen as Baby June in Gypsy (ICT MainStage) and in Ben Stevenson’s Cirque du Ballet, as well as multiple seasons as a Party Child in The Nutcracker (Texas Ballet Theater). Previous credits include Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods (YATP), Children’s Chorus in Evita (Lyric Stage). Vivian is in 3rd grade at Lakewood Elementary and has performed in several productions with NTPA and Linden Grove.  Some of her favorite roles include Genie in Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood in Into the Woods, and Veruca Salt in Willy Wonka. ALYSSA MELTON (Fan, Ghost of Christmas Present) is thrilled to be decking the halls of the Potter Rose once again, having appeared in last year’s production of A Christmas Carol (Fan and Future) as well as in Public Works Dallas’ The Odyssey (Athena) summer 2022. Other roles she has enjoyed portraying include Lavender in Matilda (Casa Mañana, GPAC), Chiffon in Little Shop of Horrors (Granbury Theatre Co.), and Ursula in The Little Mermaid Jr. (Plaza Academy). She would like to thank her friends, family, and mentors for their support.

OLIVIA MEREDITH (Fan, Present) is extremely excited to return to Dallas Theater Center for her third A Christmas Carol production as the Ghost of Christmas Present and Fan ( previously cast as Tiny Tim, 2018 and Belinda. 2019).. Her most recent roles include Raynell in Fences at Circle Theater and Theodosia in The Odyssey (Dallas Theater Center Public Works Dallas). Olivia has had the privilege and honor of learning from and sharing the stage with so many amazing actors at the Dallas Theater Center, Circle Theatre and the Black Academy of Arts and Letters over the last 5 years. She is a fifth grade straight A student at Belt Line Elementary and a member of the National Elementary Honor Society.

ETHAN ROSS NEWELL (Peter Cratchit) is a fifth grader at The Classical Center at Vial Elementary. He began acting at the age of four with Breitling Performing Arts. At seven years old, Ethan started studying dance with the Dallas Black Dance Academy. Ethan is a Boy Scout, he plays classical piano, and his favorite pastime is creating YouTube videos. This is Ethan’s first time gracing the Dallas Theater Center stage. He thanks God for the opportunity, and his family for their support.

AMBER ROSSI (Understudy: Female Ensemble) is grateful to be back at DTC after last appearing as #7 in The Wolves and Lucy in A Christmas Carol 2018 Other stage credits include June in Into the Breeches (Stage West), Felicite in Madame Bovary (Undermain), and Wendla in Spring Awakening (SMU). She graduated with her BFA in Acting from Southern Methodist University in 2020. Big thanks to her friends, family, and this wonderful cast for all of the love and support.

SALLY NYSTUEN VAHLE (Marley, Old Joe) is a member of the Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company. The 20222023 season marks Sally’s 30th year acting on the stages at Dallas Theater Center. RANDY PEARLMAN (Mr. Fezziwig, Charitable Gent) is very excited to be back with the DTC team and getting to be part of the time-honored tradition of A Christmas Carol. His last appearance with DTC was in the new musical Fly. Recently, Randy appeared as the D’ysquith Family in WaterTower’s A Gentleman’s Guide To Love And Murder, Gary in Kitchen Dog Theater’s Gary: A Sequel To Titus Andronicus, and as both Mayor Shinn and Mrs. Paroo in Theatre Three’s The Music Man. He has worked with many theaters in the DFW area as well as performing as a voice actor for Crunchyroll. Randy is represented by The Horne Agency.

JOEL FERRELL (Choreographer) is a seasoned director, choreographer, educator, and consultant based in Dallas, Texas. Mr. Ferrell has directed and choreographed extensively around the country for Dallas Theater Center, Denver Center Theater, Portland Center Stage, North Shore Music Theater, and many more. Mr. Ferrell is the former Associate Artistic Director of Dallas Theater Center (2011-2019) and Artistic Director of Casa Manana Musicals (Fort Worth, TX; 1996 to 2001). His acting credits include Broadway National tours, regional theater, television and film, most recently appearing in the Dallas produced film, Final Dress. Mr. Ferrell is part of the producing team for THE HOLLOW, starring John Rapson, which recently premiered to great acclaim at Amphibian Stage in Ft. Worth. He is also Director in Residence for Theatre3 in Dallas,Texas.

GARY ADLER (Music Director) has been a working conductor, pianist and composer for over thirty years. He served as the music director/arranger for the Radio City Christmas Spectacular, and also music directed Avenue Q for its six year run on Broadway. As a writer, Gary received two 2005 Drama Desk nominations for his music and lyrics for the off-Broadway hit Altar Boyz. For Disney Channel, he created the musical world for Johnny and the Sprites, starring John Tartaglia. He co-produced and arranged two albums for Broadway’s Telly Leung, and has toured extensively with Chita Rivera. Other New York playing/conducting credits include The Fantasticks, Urinetown, Hairspray, Kinky Boots, It Shoulda Been You, and Nunsense. In 2019, Gary was the Music Director of DTC’s In The Heights, and is very happy to return to Dallas!

VALARIE GLADSTONE (Hair, Wig & Makeup Design) is happy to be back in Dallas and the a part of the A Christmas Carol family. She is currently working on the Amazon show The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and has worked on a number of projects, including over 10 Broadway shows and dance companies from Dance Theatre of Harlem to the Bolshoi. Valarie has also taken part in a variety of television shows, including Dickinson and the Deuce, and feature films like The Greatest Showman, Wolf of Wall Street and Harriet. ANDREW J. BROWN (Director of Production) has been with Dallas Theater Center since March of 2020. The twelve-member Diane and Hal Brierley Resident Acting Company has since become a signature component of Dallas Theater Center’s presence in the Dallas Arts District.
