Moreton Bay Islands

One of Brisbane’s hidden secrets is Moreton Bay and its islands, in fact Moreton Island is the third largest sand island in the world, with the highest sandhills in the world. As well as driving around its mainland shores there are ferries that will take you out to the islands.

Moreton Island has two ferry operations. Moreton Island Adventures depart from the Port of Brisbane to The Wrecks with a vehicular ferry. Tangalooma Resort runs its own passenger ferry to Tangalooma from Holt Street, Pinkenba on the north side of the river. There is a range of accommodation, from resort style to camping. A four-wheel drive vehicle is necessary to get around the island.

Stradbroke Ferries service North Stradbroke Island by vehicular ferries and passenger ferries from Toondah Harbour at Cleveland. The Stradbroke Flyer runs water taxis from Toondah Harbour to North Stradbroke Island.

Stradbroke offers a good range of accommodation, camping, fishing, swimming, whale watching in season, nature walks and Quandamooka Indigenous culture. North Stradbroke Island has many kilometres of bitumen roads.

Stradbroke Ferries also run vehicular and Bay Islands Transit run passenger ferries to Lamb, Karragarra, Macleay and Russell Islands from Redland Bay. These islands in Southern Moreton Bay are close together in a sheltered and scenic part of the bay. The islands’ populations are a mix of permanent and holiday visitors.
