ABOUT THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS PRESENTED BY EMC INSURANCE COMPANIES

T

he Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) program celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Iowa’s young musical theater artists - from the performers on stage to the musicians and technical crew. We celebrate each and every school that makes musical theater a part of their students’ learning experience. Throughout the year students and educators benefit from: · EXPERT FEEDBACK provided by theater professionals who attend and review each participating musical · LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES which provide practical instruction, taught by local and national theater professionals

· AWARDS SHOWCASE uplifting the achievements of schools and students on the Des Moines Civic Center stage

The IHSMTA program is designed to be celebratory rather than directly competitive. Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievements and multiple honorees may be named in each category as performances merit.

2022 TECHNICAL THEATER SCHOLARSHIP

The Technical Theater Scholarship, introduced in 2018, is annually awarded to one graduating Iowa senior pursuing a technical theater major or minor at an accredited college or university. The $10,000 scholarship is made possible due to the generous support of Doug and Debbie West.

Colin Kiernan, Waukee High School, Class of 2022 “When I started, I did not even consider myself to be an artist, just someone who made things work, made technical decisions, and problem-solved issues along the way,” shares Colin Kiernan about his initial journey as a theater technician. Now an avid lighting designer with a range of stagehand, scenic, and other experiences under his belt, he has come to realize that each decision and moment of problem-solving is part of what makes him an artist. He looks forward to studying Theatre and Cinema at the University of Iowa, sharing, “I view what I do as creating a world for people to exist in, even if just for the duration of a show, and I want to keep creating those worlds, and inspire others to create their own.”

2022 IMPACT AWARD RECIPIENTS The Impact Award recognizes educators and community members who go above and beyond to support the high school musical theater experience. Student nominations and testimonials from colleagues, parents and administrators were reviewed to determine this year’s honored recipients. Aaron Dean Director, Dubuque Senior High School Nominated by Joe Delaney, 12th Grade

Aaron Dean encourages students to push beyond what they think is possible, to be problem-solvers. His room at Dubuque Senior High School is a safe haven, where he listens and gives students the support they need. In turn, the students do their very best for him. One of his nominators shared “Aaron Dean impacts everyone at our school, in our community, around this state, and in the larger theatre community, simply because he thinks it is right.”

Jeremy Fitzpatrick Director, Johnston High School Nominated by Ayla Hanson, 10th Grade

Jeremy Fitzpatrick, or “Fitz” as he is known to his students, sets high expectations and gives students the tools they need to reach them. He leads with a spirit of kindness, compassion, and inclusion so that students feel heard and safe. Fitz coaches students to not just be better actors, but better people. His nominator Ayla Hanson shared, “It’s because of Fitz that I’ve chosen to study stage management in college.”

Bill Lammers Technical Director, Cedar Rapids Washington High School Nominated by Max Cline, 11th Grade

Retiring technical director Bill Lammers has served the students of Cedar Rapids Washington for 34 years. While it is his goal to create beautiful shows, his true legacy is in the relationships he has cultivated and his commitment to training students well, asserts student Max Cline. Entrusting students with the tools to run a full production unassisted has “allowed the hundreds of students who have passed through Lammers’ shop to develop the skills needed for their time beyond high school” in whatever area they pursue.

Tracey Matt Meal Coordinator, Albia Community High School Nominated by Abby Perry, 10th Grade

During the day, Tracey Matt teaches English at Albia Community High School. She also holds the affection title of “Drama Mama” after launching a robust program to ensure that all staff and students working on the school musical have access to healthy snacks and a full meal each night of show week. Her efforts menu planning, fundraising, and organizing an army of volunteers “has brought our theatre family closer together” shares student Abby Perry by ensuring that everyone’s needs are met.
