ABOUT THE IOWA HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL THEATER AWARDS

The Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards (IHSMTA) program celebrates the extraordinary achievements of Iowa’s young musical theater artists - from the performers on stage to the musicians and technical crew. We celebrate each and every school that makes musical theater a part of their students’ learning experience.

Throughout the year students and educators benefit from:

· EXPERT FEEDBACK provided by theater professionals who attend and review each participating musical

· LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES which provide practical instruction, taught by local and national theater professionals

· AWARDS SHOWCASE uplifting the achievements of schools and students on the Des Moines Civic Center stage

The IHSMTA program is designed to be celebratory rather than directly competitive. Any student or school at an outstanding level is recognized for their achievements and multiple honorees may be named in each category as performances merit.

2023 IMPACT AWARD RECIPIENTS

The Impact Award recognizes educators and community members who go above and beyond to support the high school musical theater experience. Student nominations and testimonials from colleagues, parents and administrators were reviewed to determine this year’s honored recipients.

MISTY BETTEY Volunteer, Greene County High School

Nominated by Ava Schilling, 11th Grade

The Greene County drama program relies on superstar volunteer Misty Bettey. From cheering on students, to picking up a paint brush, to finding innovative ways to market the production to the student body and community, Misty answers the call. Student Ava Schilling shares, “Nobody needs to ask her for help, or call her up to see if she’s free because she already is there, giving her positivity and radiant attitude to those around her wherever she’s needed.”

TOM GOODALL Theatre Manager, North Scott High School

Nominated by Hannah Noonan, 11th Grade

Over a 50-year career, Tom Goodall has helped thousands of students find their purpose and voice. Tom teaches hands-on technical skills, instills confidence, and makes every student feel valued. After soliciting stories from alumni about his impact, student Hannan Noonan reports, “So many stories start with ‘because of Mr. G. I now’ and end with everything ranging from ‘teach’ to ‘work professionally in theatre’ to quite simply ‘still exist’ because of the love and support that helped [students] through their toughest times.”

STACIE KINTIGH Director, North Scott High School

Nominated by Grace Hamann, 12th Grade

North Scott credits their drama program’s success to Stacie Kintigh’s leadership. She welcomes students into the fold before they reach high school, and high school students are given valuable opportunities to teach and mentor younger students. The result is more confident young people and a strong foundation for creating quality work. “Stacie is the reason I can call myself a leader,” says student Grace Hamann. “She creates an environment where students can grow and thrive before, during, and after high school.”

ASHLEY MAIERS Director, Earlham High School

Nominated by Ainsley Hughes, 12th Grade

Earlham’s students have found a strong advocate in director Ashley Maiers. Encouragement, inclusivity, and mental health support are the bedrock of Ashley’s classroom and drama program. She helps each student find ways to bring their unique talents to the program, whether onstage or off. As a result, over a third of the school’s student body routinely participates in the school musical. Student Ainsley Hughes shares, “She makes sure every kid in our production feels included and like they have a voice.”
