Dear friends, There is no denying the popularity of Robert James Waller’s novel The Bridges of Madison County, with over 50 million copies sold worldwide since its publication in 1992. The subsequent movie, released in 1995 and starring Clint Eastwood and Meryl Streep was also highly successful. And of course both the book and the film helped to firmly establish the covered bridges in Madison County into one of Iowa’s most popular tourist destinations.

In 2012, Broadway producer Jeffrey Richards mentioned to me that he and producer Stacy Mindich were working on a musical adaptation of The Bridges of Madison County for Broadway, and I was thrilled when he told me that the creative team would include Marsha Norman, Bart Sher and Jason Robert Brown – all Tony Award-winners and all true masters of their craft.

A year later, the pre-Broadway tryout of the musical was staged at the prestigious Williamstown Theater Festival in Massachusetts. It was a great pleasure to attend one of the first performances in the run (on the same evening that Robert James Waller attended) and I was instantly swept into the beauty of the show – a story of love, of choices, and of life in small-town Iowa. I was especially taken by the incredible music and lyrics for the show by Jason Robert Brown.

Following the success of the Williamstown run, our investment consortium, the Independent Presenters Network, signed on as co-producers of the Broadway production, with Des Moines Performing Arts as an investor. The Bridges of Madison County opened at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theater in New York in February 2014 and several months later, Jason Robert Brown earned two Tony Awards for his work on the musical, for Best Score and Best Orchestrations.

Now we are thrilled to present the National Tour premiere of The Bridges of Madison County as part of our Willis Broadway Series. This tour was born largely out of the love that the Broadway community has for the original Broadway production. And while many people worked to ensure that there would be a tour, the two people most responsible are my friends Meredith Blair of The Booking Group and Ken Gentry of NetWorks, to whom we are all very grateful.

As many of my friends and colleagues know, I am an enormous fan of this show. We are so happy that our wonderful Central Iowa audiences will be the first in the nation to see this beautiful production of The Bridges of Madison County.

ROBERT JAMES WALLER (Novelist) grew up in Rockford, Iowa, where his mother was a housewife and his father operated a small produce business. He was educated at the University of Northern Iowa and Indiana University, where he received his doctorate.

He taught management, economics and applied mathematics courses at the University of Northern Iowa from 1968 to 1991. He worked for more than 20 years as a musician (guitar, flute, singer/songwriter) playing nightclubs and concerts, and is a serious photographer. Among his publications is the best-selling novel, The Bridges of Madison County, with 12 million copies in print in 40-plus languages, and which was adapted into a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep and Clint Eastwood. He has published a total of seven novels, with sales of more than 17 million copies. Robert lives on a small farm in the Texas Hill Country and pursues his various interests, including economics, mathematics, writing and music.

BRIDGES at the 46th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival Sometimes, you have to go back to where it all began…

n Saturday, Oct. 10, 2015, Elizabeth Stanley (Francesca Johnson) and Andrew Samonsky (Robert Kincaid) made their first official public appearance as stars of The Bridges of Madison County national tour at the 46th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival in Winterset. Ms. Stanley and Mr. Samonsky wowed the crowd by performing selections from the show including “To Build a Home,” “One Second and a Million Miles” and “It All Fades Away.” After the performance, Des Moines Performing Arts President and CEO Jeff Chelesvig hosted a Q&A, followed by a presentation from representatives with the Covered Bridge Festival, the Madison County Board of Supervisors and the Madison County Chamber of Commerce.

During their time in Madison County, The Bridges of Madison County stars Elizabeth Stanley (Francesca Johnson) and Andrew Samonsky (Robert Kincaid) visited the Roseman Bridge, which plays an integral role in the story.

INSIDE BRIDGES With Composer Jason Robert Brown Jason Robert Brown has won three Tony Awards for his work as a composer, lyricist, and orchestrator – including two for “The Bridges of Madison County” (Best Original Score and Best Orchestrations).

he Philadelphia Inquirer once called him “one of Broadway’s smartest and most sophisticated songwriters …” And The New York Times described him as “a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical.”

Brown visited relatives in Des Moines just before rehearsals started for the Broadway production of “Bridges,” which he says gave him a better feel for the Winterset community.

He returned to Iowa last summer as guest conductor for the Des Moines Symphony’s annual Yankee Doodle Pops concert – an experience that took him by surprise.

“The Pops concert was a pretty amazing thing,” Brown says. “I have not done an outdoor event with that many people before.

That visit also served as confirmation that he and playwright Marsha Norman were on track with the stage production.

LISTENING DEVICES FM listening devices are available at the Guest Services Counters in both lobbies. Headphones, earbuds are provided with these devices. BRAILLE AND LARGE PRINT Playbills for most Broadway productions are available in Braille at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters, compliments of the lowa Department of the Blind.

Large print playbills are also generally available.

LOST ITEMS Lost items may be reported or claimed at the Nollen Lobby Guest Services Counter during an event. After an event, please contact our Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300 or stop by Monday through Friday, 9 am. to 5 p.m. Items are kept for 30 days.

CAMERAS The use of cameras or any type of recording device in the Main Hall is prohibited at all times.

CELL PHONES AND MOBILE DEVICES Please turn cell phones and mobile devices off, or set them to the silent mode. Please also refrain from text messaging and using them as light sources during the performance.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE If you have a medical need, please notify the House Staff. Medical services are provided by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines in the Prairie Meadows Lobby. This facility is equipped with Automatic External Defibrillators. Venue staff can provide the closest unit in the event of a medical emergency.

CHILDREN Children age five and above are generally welcome to attend performances. Children younger than five are welcome to attend designated family-oriented productions only. Regardless of age, all guests must present a ticket. Call the Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300 if you are unsure if your child will be admitted.

PRE-ORDERING DRINKS Avoid the line at intermission by ordering your drink ahead of time.

Order and pay at any open bar before the performance. Pick your drink up at either lobby’s Guest Services Counter during intermission.

COAT/BAG CHECK Coats and bags may be checked for $2 at the Nollen or Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters. Please note that large items including duffle bags and luggage are not permitted in the auditorium. For the comfort and safety of all guests, such items should be checked or returned to your vehicle.
