Dear friends, We are proud to present the return of The Book of Mormon to the Des Moines Civic Center.

When we first brought this production to town just two years ago, Des Moines was the sixth stop on the first national tour, and since that time the show has been setting sales records at theaters across the country.

Currently, there are two U.S. tours, a London West End production and a Broadway production of the show.

With nine Tony Awards – including Best Musical – and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album, The Book of Mormon is one of the best Broadway shows we’ve ever had the pleasure to present… twice.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, please accept our sincere thanks to our Willis Broadway Series Season Ticket Holders and Donors. Your interest, patronage and generosity build the foundation for all we do.

Des Moines Performing Arts is the non-profit organization that operates the Des Moines Civic Center, Stoner Theater, Temple Theater and Cowles Commons. At these venues, you will find an extensive range of high-quality live, professional performing arts.

The world’s top dance companies perform in The Dance Series. The Wellmark Blue Cross and Blue Shield Family Series offers an ideal introduction to theater and the arts for families and children. The Prairie Meadows Temple Comedy Series brings laughs and creative theater performances to the Temple Theater, a space that is also the home to the Prairie Meadows Live at the Temple Concert Series.

Des Moines Performing Arts also offers highly impactful educational programs. The Applause Series offers $1 tickets to every one of the more than 54,000 students and teachers who come to its performances annually. Professional development programs provide teachers with new strategies for the classroom. And, I hope you will mark your calendar for June 1, 2015, when we celebrate the work of Iowa’s talented young people and their committed instructors at the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase.

ROBERT LOPEZ (Book, Music, Lyrics) is the Tony, Grammy and Emmy-winning co-creator of the smash hit musicals Avenue Q and The Book of Mormon. With wife Kristen Anderson-Lopez, he wrote the songs for Disney’s blockbuster movie Frozen, including its hit song “Let It Go,” nominated for an Oscar and Golden Globe Award. They also wrote songs for Winnie the Pooh (Disney Animation, 2011) and Finding Nemo: The Musical (playing at Walt Disney World since 2006). They are currently writing an original stage musical called Up Here, directed by Alex Timbers. Bobby shared two Emmy Awards for his music for “The Wonder Pets” and an Emmy nomination for the “Scrubs” musical episode.

MATT STONE (Book, Music and Lyrics) met Trey Parker at the University of Colorado, and together they made a short animated piece called The Spirit of Christmas. This launched their most recognized work, the critically acclaimed and award-winning television show, “South Park.” The animated series is in its 15th season on Comedy Central and has won Stone four Emmy Awards and the coveted Peabody Award. South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, which Stone produced and cowrote, earned an Oscar nomination and the New York Film Critics Circle Award for Best Animated Film. In addition to “South Park,” Stone has partnered with Parker on the low-budget Cannibal! The Musical, the superhero comedy Orgazmo and the marionette action thriller Team America: World Police. Matt Stone is originally from Littleton, Colorado.

TREY PARKER (Co-Director, Book, Music, Lyrics) wrote and directed his first feature film, Cannibal! The Musical, while attending the University of Colorado in Boulder. A few years later, Trey co-created the hit animated series “South Park” with Matt Stone (his college friend and Cannibal! producer). Debuting on Comedy Central in 1997 and currently in its 15th season, “South Park” has won four Emmy Awards as well as the coveted Peabody Award. The same year “South Park” debuted, Parker wrote, directed and starred in the film Orgazmo. Two years later, Parker and Stone released the critically acclaimed feature film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. The musical, which Parker directed and co-wrote, earned an Oscar nomination for Best Song and the first-ever New York Film Critics Circle Award for an animated film. In 2004, the pair returned to theaters with Team America: World Police, an action movie cowritten and directed by Parker that starred a cast of marionettes. It has been a long-time dream of Parker’s to write a musical for Broadway. Trey Parker is originally from Conifer, Colorado.

She began her career in entertainment at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre on Capitol Hill and is thrilled and honored to be working in theater once again! Diavolo Set for World Premiere in Des Moines

Diavolo is part of Des Moines Performing Arts’ 2014-2015 Dance Series. They first performed at the Des Moines Civic Center in 2012.

hen the dance company Diavolo performs its world premiere of Cubicle later this month at the Des Moines Civic Center, the audience may feel like they are in the middle of an art gallery instead of a dark theater. At least, that is the hope of artistic director and company founder, Jacques Heim.

The result is what Diavolo calls “architecture in motion,” a relationship between the human body, the space it inhibits and the strong themes that emerge like fear, love and survival. “We don’t do dance pieces on a bare stage,” said Heim. “As soon as I have a structure – as simple as a chair – suddenly I can see motion, I can see emotion, I can see mood.”

In addition to presenting Diavolo’s world premiere performance of Cubicle at the Civic Center, Des Moines Performing Arts is a co-commissioner of the new piece! Presenting world premieres and commissioning dances are significant milestones for the organization’s Dance Series, now in its fifth season.

While Heim is the brains behind the overall design and vision of Diavolo’s pieces, choreographer Leandro Damasco creates the visual and physical movement. In Cubicle, Damasco has choreographed specific actions for 40 components on stage – 30 cube boxes that represent a workplace cubicle and the 10 company members who will dance through them. Damasco describes Cubicle as an interpretation of a worker’s life and how they can get sucked in, especially in today’s society that seems to be all about work.

“We are always looking for opportunities to expand our programming beyond the stage and that includes getting involved in the creative process,” said Eric Olmscheid, Des Moines Performing Arts Director of Programming and Education.

“In five years, we have gone from launching the new series to being more involved in supporting companies as they develop new work. It’s exciting to reflect on how much we’ve grown and how much Des Moines audiences have embraced The Dance Series and what we are offering the community.”

“We explore the lifestyle of working in that kind of environment,” said Damasco. “Suppression of cubicle life might be a good thing or a bad thing.”

Earlier this season, Des Moines Performing Arts presented the world premiere of Sea Lark from the Paul Taylor Dance Company and last season co-commissioned its first piece, The Vinegar Works: Four Dances of Moral Instruction by the Trey McIntyre Project.

In addition to Cubicle, Diavolo will perform their popular piece Transit Space.

GUEST INFORMATION ASL INTERPRETATION

Hall during designated performances. No other food or drink is allowed in the theater.

Des Moines Performing Arts offers American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation for select performances through Deaf Services Unlimited.

ELEVATORS

Elevators to the second level are located in the Nollen Lobby and near the Stoner Theater.

ATM

An ATM is located in the Ticket Office Lobby.

EMERGENCY EXITING

In case of an emergency, please leave through your nearest exit location.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION

The Iowa Radio Reading Information Service for the Blind and Print Handicapped, Inc. (IRIS) offers audio description services for select performances.

LATE SEATING

Late seating will be accommodated by House Staff at the earliest appropriate time. Pay attention to lobby chimes, which are sounded five minutes before the show begins, as well as after intermission.

BINOCULARS

Binoculars are available for rent at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters for $5.

LISTENING DEVICES

Listening devices are available for use at no charge at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters.

BRAILLE AND LARGE PRINT

Playbills for most Broadway productions are available in Braille at the Nollen and Prairie Meadows Lobby Guest Services Counters, compliments of the lowa Department of the Blind. Large print playbills are also generally available.

LOST ITEMS

CAMERAS

The use of cameras or any type of recording device in the Main Hall is prohibited at all times.

Lost items may be reported or claimed at the Nollen Lobby Guest Services Counter during an event. After an event, please contact our Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300 or stop by Monday through Friday, 9 am. to 5 p.m. Items are kept for 30 days.

MEDICAL ASSISTANCE

If you have a medical need, please notify the House Staff.

Medical services are provided by UnityPoint Health – Des Moines in the Prairie Meadows Lobby.

Please turn cell phones and mobile devices off, or set them to the silent mode. Please also refrain from text messaging and using them as light sources during the performance.

PRE-ORDERING DRINKS

Avoid the line at intermission by ordering your drink ahead of time. Order and pay at any open bar before the performance. Pick your drink up at either lobby’s Guest Services Counter during intermission.

CHILDREN

Children age five and above are generally welcome to attend performances. Children younger than five are welcome to attend designated family-oriented productions only. Regardless of age, all guests must present a ticket. Call the Ticket Office at (515) 246-2300 if you are unsure if your child will be admitted.

SPECIAL SEATING NEEDS

Seating is available for all performances for a variety of accessibility requirements (including wheelchair, motorized cart, difficulty with stairs and sight impairment).
