Are your cattle Efficient?! with Byergo Angus,
At Byergo Angus we don’t just talk the talk we back it up with hard facts. Efficiency is the single most important trait to your profitability.
Byergo Angus was established in 1950 with the purchase of one cow (Elia of South Oaks) and her two daughters. Today the Byergo Angus network spans over 1,000 cows with approximately 85% of those females descending back to the world-famous Elia’s. Efficiency is where we lay our hat and the Elia cow family has proven to be just that.

What is efficiency. There are 3 main areas to look at while improving efficiency in your herd. Cow Herd Efficiency, Backgrounding savings, and Feedlot savings.
COWHERD EFFICIENCY. This is primary target for most producers. Byergo Angus has experienced using less hay during the winter and increased stocking rates during the summer.

“On the same acres that we used to run 800 cows 20 years ago we now run 1000 cows.”
Drew Byergo
By using feed efficiency tested sires Byergo Angus has saved up to 10% in cowherd feed costs in one generation and up to 20% feed cost savings in 3 generations.
“Often times the rancher gets confused with efficiency and fleshing ability. The key is to combine both together, get an easy fleshing cow that eats less, it is possible and we are doing just that at Byergo Angus. We have to break down the miss assumptions that just since a cow is fleshy she is efficient. This is not efficiency, she might be eating twice as much, this is really costing the industry and destroying profit margins. We must measure it!” Bryson Byergo
Backgrounding Calves
“It is common practice to wean calves 45-60 days to receive an increased premium when selling your calves. “There can be big savings in cattle that convert feed into pounds in these 60 days. It is very possible to see $1 a day savings in Sire A versus Sire B’s calves. This is $60 savings per calf. On a sire that sires 30 calves, this is $1,800 savings in a sire in 1 year.” Marc Byergo.

FEEDLOT SAVINGS.
Talk to any feedlot and you will quickly find out that one of the most important traits to profit is COST OF GAIN.
“If you can put weight on for .90 cents per pound and sell them for a $1.40 you are making money. Now think if you could drive that cost of gain down to .70 cents per pound? .20 cents per pound when putting on 500 pounds is $100 per head. This is very possible on the average when buying feed efficient bulls. When individually testing animals, we see some of them eat twice as much as their counterparts.”

Improve your bottom line! Cheers

DSK Angus are excited to announce the purchase earlier this year of Byergo Mach One 02K2.
A yearling son of Ankonian One (Who is the sire of Cupcake 8900) X Cupcake 7400. Cupcake 7400 made herself known as the dam of Byergo Maverick 8400, but she didn’t stop there, where at 15 years old she has proven to be one of the most efficient cows of the entire breed.
In May 2022 I, (Helen) was fortunate enough to visit Byergo Angus and viewed a portion of the cow herd and saw this great dam in person along with her son, Maverick. I also attended the 2022 May production sale (they hold 3 sales per year) and toured the efficiency testing centre.

To say that this operation is ahead of the game is an understatement. It is impressive and realistic. Not afraid to be different or to use tried and tested older genetics, the team at Byergo have the bottom line of their clients in the forefront aiming to keep their genetics aligned to commercial reality.
The Byergo breeding program and direction is one that we can understand and agree with so we are more than excited to be adding these genetics to our own, proven program here at DSK.

Performance with efficiency is all profit!
Mach One is currently in centre for testing and collection and we are excited to await the first batch of semen for us to bring in to Australia.
