A Catholic, Salvatorian, All-Girls High School

The DSHA mission, vision, and five Qualities of a Graduate drive everything we work towards as the only Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school in the country. In these pages, you’ll see the impact of a DSHA education, one in which students learn to embody the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ. The Christcentered community, and the opportunities for each and every Dasher to develop her passions in all areas of her life, are possible because of your generosity and support.

Thank you.

OUR MISSION

Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior and grounded in their mission to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ, we develop our students into capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect who accept the gospel call to live lives that will make a difference.

OUR VISION

DSHA will be #1: recognized as the premier choice for a girl seeking to grow into her full potential as a woman of faith, heart, and intellect.

QUALITIES OF A

DSHA GRADUATE

SHE IS A BELIEVER.

She is a Believer who relies on Catholic Christian values which encourage her to act on God’s call to recognize her gifts and use her voice to pursue justice, live with integrity, and actively improve her world. A faithfilled role model, she demonstrates the highest respect and compassion for herself and for others by living a life that makes a difference.

SHE IS A SELF-ADVOCATE.

She is a Self-Advocate, who as a young woman learns to accurately assess her abilities and to recognize and resist the cultural forces and customs that would erode her own emerging sense of self or cause her to act in conflict with her own values and beliefs. Through systematic opportunities to learn, practice, and master self-advocacy behaviors, she begins to articulate her beliefs and values. She uses her own voice to state her opinion, ask questions, and effectively negotiate for her strongest possible outcome.

SHE IS A CRITICAL THINKER.

She is a Critical Thinker who solves problems, improves processes, and sees what others cannot. She is innovative and creative, her wise counsel and enlightened perspectives highly sought-after. She is an adaptable, analytical, and curious intellectual who pursues deep understanding and trusts her instincts and experience.

SHE IS A COMMUNICATOR.

She is a Communicator who is articulate, perceptive, and empowered to make her voice heard. She is highly skilled at interpersonal communication, effectively sharing ideas through various means, with various audiences, using advanced technology as needed. She is an active listener who is self-reflective and engaged and is a confident communicator who is unafraid to stand up and say what must be said.

SHE IS A LEADER.

She is a Leader who takes initiative, leading by inspiration and influence. A skilled collaborator, she uses her full potential to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish goals and achieve dreams. She is inclusive, hopeful, and highly ethical; as a visionary leader, she is accountable to herself and to others, bravely forging new paths and building new connections.

Moving Forward with Gratitude

Dear DSHA Community,

While the 2021-2022 school year was challenging, as is any year, DSHA thrived as a Catholic, all-girls, college-prep high school. The young women of DSHA excelled as they grew in faith, heart, and intellect. The DSHA experience consists of many elements, and the last school year underscored the importance of those various elements. Our students volunteered service hours at more than 70 different community organizations, raised more than $4,000 during Advent for the St. Bakhita Catholic Worker House, and collected more than $17,500 during Lent to purchase a school bus for the Salvatorian-run Jitegemee Pre and Primary School in Tanzania, Africa. In athletics, the DSHA Varsity Rugby team won its ninth national championship, while the DSHA Varsity Tennis, Ski, and Soccer teams placed in the top three at their state tournaments. An example of the continuing academic excellence at DSHA includes 368 students enrolled in 17 AP classes, and 239 students enrolled in 12 dual-credit college-level classes, with that number growing every year.

These activities are accomplished at DSHA through a Catholic, Salvatorian lens. We celebrated all-school Mass monthly, offered 30 + hours of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and said 1,250 Hail Marys as a community during weekly Rosary this year. In May, 170 young women walked across the graduation stage on their continuing path to make a difference in the world — with 99% of them heading to their best-possible-fit colleges and universities with a total of $19.2 million in scholarships.

A Strong Foundation with Future Needs

Financially, our 2021-2022 fiscal year was another sound year for DSHA. Total financial gifts from the DSHA community for scholarships and operations exceeded $2 million. Our annual fund, which covers the gap between the cost of tuition and the full cost of a DSHA education, set another record for total contributions. We are especially grateful for those community members who helped us achieve this goal. First-year enrollment was up and on track with 177 first-year students joining the DSHA community from 71 schools across the greater metro area.

Although annual operations are secure, DSHA still has longer term strategic needs to fully allow it to effectively form young girls in faith, heart, and intellect. These needs include bringing the old section of the school up to today’s standards, enhancing safety with more on-campus parking, updating STEM facilities, making sure that we have competitive athletic fields, and continued strengthening of our endowment. The board of directors and the administration of DSHA are focused on these items, and we are jointly developing plans for the continuous improvement of the DSHA campus and community.

A Community Of Support

And while we look toward the future, I am full of gratitude as I review the many accomplishments of the 2021-22 school year. DSHA is fortunate to have a strong

7

and capable board of directors with a firm commitment to the school and its mission. I am thankful for my fellow directors’ leadership, passion for the school, and unwavering support. I’d like to thank Andy Lampereur, Joe Kerschner, MD, and Cathy Ebacher, JD, for their many contributions as they leave the board and welcome Emeritus Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Dr. Kathleen Cepelka and Juan Banda from Froedtert Health to the board. We will miss our departing board members, but are blessed to have Juan and Dr. Cepelka join us.

We are also blessed to have an incredibly talented faculty and staff who care about each and every student and give our young women 100 percent of themselves day after day. They are responsible for the success of DSHA, and we could not achieve what we do without them.

Most importantly, I am grateful for you. Today’s environment is challenging. The encouragement, counsel, and support from the entire DSHA community provides the motivation for all of us to make DSHA the best it can be and to continue our mission in support of the girls entrusted to our care.

We are united in our mission to be the goodness and kindness of Jesus and to change the lives of young women in Milwaukee as we focus on the 2022-23 school year and beyond. Thank you for your generosity to this great institution.

With sincere gratitude, John McDermott

A Renewed Appreciation

Dear DSHA Community,

With the start of every school year comes a new beginning. It includes new students, new programs, and a renewed sense in our mission and in our faith. After reflecting on this past year, I experienced a newness myself — a unique appreciation for the daily work that happens inside our classrooms and for the faculty and staff that lead our students in becoming confident and capable young women.

DSHA is first and foremost Catholic and Salvatorian, but second a collegepreparatory school. What I saw come to life this this year is our ability to meet students where they are in their intellectual journey, and to give them the tools necessary to excel in the world in front of them, while being the goodness and kindness of Jesus to those around them. Our classrooms support every girl with her unique gifts, from our Marian Scholars learning at their own pace to students earning college credit in dual-credit or Advanced Placement classes.

Below are a few examples of the exceptional work I’ve admired in our classrooms this past year:

Launching the STEM Scholars Program

In the 2021-22 school year, DSHA launched the STEM Scholars Program in its full format after a soft launch during DSHA’s operation in a hybrid model. Fortythree students were enrolled in the program this past year. Led by Mathematics Faculty Rissie Lundberg, DSHA ’93, and Academic Dean Dr. Heather Mansfield, the STEM Scholars Program follows the guidelines of the American Society of Engineering Education and is designed for motivated high school students who are curious about and are willing to be highly engaged in learning and applying science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics.

The STEM Scholars Program gives our young women more in-depth knowledge of math and science — and the ability to integrate and apply that knowledge — that will give them an advantage as they go out into the world to make a difference. We are proud of this new program that encourages our young women to embrace their science self-confidence while participating in specific course work; hands-on research and projects; and learning beyond the classroom.

Mentoring the Marian Scholars

While we launched the Marian Scholars Program last school year, Marian Scholars Director Mary Anderson, Marian Scholars Faculty Gretchen Caraher, DSHA ’93, Principal Dan Quesnell, and myself saw its strength this year, due in part to our peer mentors.

Forty-five of our upperclasswomen supported our four Marian Scholars this year as their peer mentors. The program relies on peer mentors, who give up one of

9

their free periods throughout the day to attend a class with a Marian Scholar, helping her engage in class, implement curriculum modifications, and support her unique needs. In every class period, a Marian Scholar has a peer mentor with her who has previously taken the course.

In the 2022-23 school year, we welcomed one additional scholar for a total of 5 Marian Scholars enrolled at DSHA. Peer mentors will continue to display the goodness and kindness of Jesus to these students with the opportunity to receive dual college credit for their participation through Mount Mary’s course “Introduction to Exceptional Learners.”

Diving into the Catholic, Salvatorian Faith DSHA’s Campus Ministry Department has always offered peer-connected opportunities for students to grow in their faith and connect with others as a Catholic community. While all-school Mass, theology classes, retreats, and service are essential aspects of our faith formation program, the near countless optional faith formation opportunities made available by Campus Ministry help our young women choose and discover a connection with God and the Catholic faith that will last beyond the walls of DSHA.

Dashers opt to partake in Faith Friday Masses, weekly Rosary and reconciliation, and monthly Eucharistic Adoration, to name a few. Time is set aside for these experiences and allow girls to grow and deepen their relationship with Jesus in a way that is intentional and meaningful.

To learn more about our faith formation and Catholic identity, see the Young Women of Faith feature on page 21.

When looking at the aspects of the classroom mentioned above, it is important to note that DSHA could not serve our students exceptionally without the help of generous donors like you. I am filled with gratitude for your support in helping us meet the needs of our students as they grow into young women of faith, heart, and intellect.

With a grateful heart, Katie Konieczny, DSHA ‘92

Embodying the DSHA Mission

11

The DSHA mission is at the center of everything we do and everything we teach our young women. Throughout their four years at DSHA, our students learn to embody this mission.

On the following pages, you will read about the DSHA experience you helped make possible from the perspective of four remarkable young women. Each young woman’s story highlights a line of the DSHA mission and displays how she is an example of the mission alive.

Ava Jenkins, DSHA '22, embodies this part of the DSHA mission:

Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person.

Since Jenkins' arrival sophomore year, she found immense value in participating in regular service, bonded with others different than her as a peer mentor in DSHA's Marian Scholars Program, expanded her mind in rigorous courses, and interacted with those with similar interests in co-curricular groups. Her experiences helped her develop all aspects of her life. The confidence she places in her whole person will support her as she chases her biggest dreams.

On the Way to Becoming President

After my freshman year at a co-ed high school, I transferred to DSHA. I was ready for the academic rigor, but as I walked into my first class at DSHA my sophomore year, I was incredibly intimidated.

I was more than a little nervous about meeting my classmates for the next three years. Would they be nice? Would they like me? Was transferring even worth it?

It turns out transferring was one of the best decisions I have ever made. My first few months at DSHA were all I could have wished for. Our class showed our school spirit by playing obnoxiously loud music during our 60’s themed Dash-A-Thon. We cheered hard for our classmates at Airband. We were filled with joy and school spirit.

The best part about going to an all-girls school is the casual comfort that lets me feel confident in myself, regardless of what I look like. I would just wake up, put on my skirt, pick what color polo I wanted to wear, and show up. Even better, I love that DSHA is a safe space, and a fun and supportive environment.

And for me personally, a supportive environment is one that encourages me to constantly push myself.

BEYOND ACADEMICS

I fit right in at DSHA as a student passionate about succeeding academically. DSHA is a competitive school in the idea that we have good, strong academics, but not in the idea that girls are fighting for the top rank or top spot at the expense of other students. All of us genuinely want each other to succeed, and we are committed to working together.

Being in the all-girls environment at DSHA

13

has improved my confidence in trying new things, because I do not have to worry about anyone judging me, shutting me down for saying something new, or trying to answer a question that I may not know the answer to. I heard stories from some of my female friends who went to co-ed schools about not wanting to answer a question that was on the board in their calculus class. Calculus is so hard, but there was never a time where I felt that the girls in my class were going to put me down for not knowing the answer.

While DSHA prepared me to be confident in the classroom, it prepared me for my future studies and plans in so many other ways. I think the most important aspect of DSHA is the wholeperson education that we are committed to as a school. It is something different from other high schools that, yes, DSHA is preparing girls to be thinkers and to do well in the classroom and succeed academically, but it is also looking to build girls in every other aspect of their lives. I truly know I would not have been as well-rounded of a person if I did not attend DSHA.

A PEER-SON FOR OTHERS

On my journey to become more well-rounded, I became involved in DSHA’s Marian Scholars Program. The Marian Scholars Program makes a DSHA education possible for girls with intellectual and developmental disabilities. I became a peer mentor and a friend to Mia Ruge, DSHA ’24. I accompanied her to class during a free period of mine, giving her support and helping her engage in class.

Having the Marian Scholars in class gives students a more realistic glimpse of what the world looks like. It gives them the experience they need to interact with other people in the real world outside of DSHA.

Interacting with Mia has been the greatest joy of my high school career. It helped me learn too. Being one of her peer mentors has helped me become more patient. I know I am impatient with myself, but I cannot be impatient with her. In addition, I learned how to advocate for other people. Last semester, I worked with Mia’s art teacher to readjust the projects to be more attainable for Mia. All in all, the Marian

Ava Jenkins, DSHA ‘22

Scholars Program helped me learn skills beyond the classroom that I will need in my future.

FUTURE MADAM PRESIDENT

I will be attending Yale University to study political science and history this fall, and the DSHA community has been a big support system in my journey to get there. The faculty and staff at DSHA never tell you that your dreams are too big. I think I probably would have shut myself down and the dream to go to Yale a long time ago if I did not come to DSHA. I had told people at school that I wanted to go to Yale, and their response was “Absolutely, you can do that.” They believed in me and helped me believe in myself. And now I am a thousand miles away living out one of my biggest dreams.

Beyond Yale, my next dream is to become president. The election in 2040 will be the election that I can run in for the first time. DSHA and my plethora of high school opportunities have helped me become more well-rounded and have shown me that I possess the skill set to make that happen. Becoming president is quite a large dream to have, but no one at DSHA has made me feel like I was silly. No one sat me down and gently encouraged me to shoot lower. In fact, they did the opposite. Teachers and classmates promised me their support and vote 20 years down the line.

Politics right now is so dominated by men. Women are finally breaking into positions that only men have ever held.

So when I think about running for president in 2040, I know DSHA, and its focus on the whole person, will help me realize this dream. I'm not going to wonder if I'm fit for the position as a woman.

Because that's the silliest thing I could ever ask.

Wojciak embraced the scriptural theme of the 2021-22 school year, which comes from Titus 3:4 and the mission of the Sisters of the Divine Savior — to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ. At DSHA, she expanded her knowledge on diverse perspectives and formed relationships through serving others, and therefore, is ready to be an active member of the communities of which she is a part.

EXPANDING MY VIEW AT DSHA

My parents brought me to America at just eighteen months old in hopes of providing a high-quality education for me, and they have instilled in me an optimistic vision for my future. Though adopting optimism applies to most immigrants, my motivated nature to embrace positivity in various transitions in life allows me to find comfort in change. Growing up, my curiosity revolving around new people and environments allowed me to further my empathetic nature as an immigrant who has navigated the network of multitudes of perspectives. My openness and optimism in exploring diverse perspectives has allowed me to explore and develop my family life, academic journey, and faith life; in essence, being an immigrant, first generation student, and curious

Growing up in a Polish household, I have been invited to connect with different communities around me. Though I was not born into any of these communities, I have learned to use my empathetic nature to navigate my personal connection to the communities that have welcomed me. Coming into these communities as a slight outsider ultimately allows me to gain insight on superfluous amounts of perspectives, while contributing to my own as well. This strength, which allowed me to relate with those around me, began to motivate me as I transitioned into high school; during my first days at DSHA, the faculty, staff, and students all opened my eyes to the strength and capacities individuals of DSHA embrace.

Trying to escape the first day jitters as I was welcomed into the DSHA community, I quickly found comfort in the institution. This newfound comfort came from the profound perspectives I encountered on my first day; the teachers that greeted us were anchored in encouragement, and my peers were eager to learn. As I tried to take in this new experience, I was showered with endless opportunities that DSHA welcomed each of its students to partake in. As an immigrant, I had only navigated my way through life in different experiences at school, but I was curious to expand my perspective. That is, the various support systems rooted in the DSHA community opened my eyes to

15

DSHA

involvement opportunities such as volleyball, classroom engagement, and faith-based service. I eventually became grounded in the support DSHA had to offer me. In particular, DSHA served as my main support system through which I embraced my eagerness as an immigrant to explore a new chapter in my life; my teachers invited me to talk about my outsider perspective in classroom discussions, and my peers encouraged me to embrace my cultures.

SERVICE AS A RELATIONSHIP

Growing up in a bilingual household, I have subconsciously supported two vastly different cultures, which has assured me to grow love for helping and supporting others. I became more conscious of my motivation to help and support others as DSHA introduced service to my faith life. Though DSHA introduced the importance of service to me, it was not until my morning talks with Director of Salvatorian Service Dr. Katie Daily Pickart, DSHA '84, that I really understood. We would talk each Collections Day — the days when hundreds of DSHA students, faculty, and staff collect items for local food pantries or other organizations in Milwaukee.

I found I wanted to dive deeper into the relationship aspect of service. As Dr. Pickart opened the back door to the DSHA building each Collections Day morning, she thanked each parent for their daughter and welcomed young women into the doors of the DSHA community. She strived to form a faith-filled relationship with many students. Through meaningful conversations with Dr. Pickart, she introduced me to the goodness and kindness rooted in the relationship aspect of service early in my high school years, which has impacted me greatly. In this way, Dr. Pickart and the other members of the faculty and staff at DSHA helped me mature into the person I was looking to be. It was through this high school experience where I realized the members of the DSHA community, who I saw on a daily basis, encompassed the vitality of relating with others in order to mature in all aspects of life — family life, academic journey, and faith life.

As the members of the DSHA community welcomed me through the back entrance of the building, into classrooms, and to various lunch tables, my high school experience allowed me to interact constructively with the shared perspectives of the DSHA community. As I furthered my knowledge in opening up to new perspectives, I began to gain a new outlook on service. Coming from an immigrant family, I was searching for the relationship aspect of service where I could

empathize and relate with others in some way. As a result of DSHA helping me mature into the person I wanted to be, I felt as though forming relationships through service would help me do the same with others. When I serve, I reach out to others that are not part of my community in various ways. I have served children, the elderly, and individuals with special needs; in this way, I have reached out to those outside of my community in hopes to further understand diverse perspectives.

One way in which DSHA helped me develop in the relationship aspect of service was through Vocare. Over these two weeks, I served at Saint Charles Borromeo Parish where I listened to and supported the needs of first, second, fifth, and even eighth graders. Being able to reach out to these children for two weeks allowed me to become a present and attentive part of their community. As I came into this experience not only questioning my ability to form relationships within service, but also open to growth from this opportunity, I strived to connect with these children so that they could embody their hidden strengths and capacities. The perspectives of these children that I encountered demonstrated their small, but mighty eagerness to mature into the person they would like to become. While these two weeks may not have been life-changing for these students, I saw the ways I was able to help them grow their strengths inside and outside the classroom by becoming an additional support system for them. That is, I took the support that the DSHA community had given me over my four years of high school and transformed it into a positive impact on those I served.

INTO THE FUTURE

I am now transitioning into the support of a new community — the Notre Dame community — in which the University of Notre Dame welcomes me to transform my mind and heart throughout my time inside and outside the classroom. Throughout this next chapter in my life, I am eager to fulfill my lifelong learning goal of expanding my knowledge on diverse perspectives. The impactful Notre Dame education and experience that DSHA has prepared me for by making known the goodness and kindness of Jesus through service will transform my mind by augmenting my knowledge and critical thinking abilities and transform my heart by increasing my empathy, interpersonal skills, and faith. In this way, DSHA has prepared me to become an active member of all of the communities that I adhere to, experience, and serve.

Goodness & Kindness

Lizzie Dondlinger, DSHA ’22, embodies this part of the DSHA mission:

Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior and grounded in their mission to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ, we develop our students into capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect who accept the gospel call to live lives that will make a difference.

Throughout her time at DSHA, Dondlinger strove to develop in her academic, spiritual, and co-curricular pursuits. By her senior year, she was a DSHA Campus Ministry Officer, one of the leads in DSHA's fall musical Freaky Friday, and the DSHA Class of 2022 Salutatorian. Perhaps her biggest accomplishment was her ability to weave faith, heart, and intellect together to discover a passion and calling for her future.

Discovering a Passion to Teach

BEYOND ACADEMICS

A process that 175 new students begin each year — some enthused, some anxious, some paralyzed by transition, some ready to reinvent, some prepared, and some more lost than they ever expected. The common denominator for each Dasher: inevitable change and inevitable growth. As much as I’d like to say that I went into high school ready to embrace these inevitabilities, dreaming of all the things I could achieve and the person I could become by the end of my experience, I instead entered DSHA assured of my 14-year-old self and all of her convictions. Sure, making new friends and learning new things was always an intention, but DSHA primarily functioned as a steppingstone to the final product — becoming a biomedical engineer at MIT. Definitely not an unworthy goal, but certainly a goal that failed to encapsulate my truest self.

Freshman and sophomore year, I remained on the path to my lofty engineering goal. Earning high grades despite the increased intensity of classes assured me that I would achieve it. With confidence that I could maintain academic stability, I started participating in activities and groups that interested me: fall musicals, campus ministry, track and field, choir, and student council. Some fit, and some exhausted me more than I anticipated. I discarded those I found unpleasant and resolved to continue those I enjoyed during my time at DSHA.

I’ve always struggled to keep with things I didn’t excel at. I feared instability; I despised

17

DSHA

failure; and I hated disappointing myself. I held myself to such high standards and expectations that I held myself back. After all, who excels at something they’ve never tried? Until I could ease these expectations and learn to accept the failure and the confusion as essential rather than just blocks to an end goal, I couldn't really experience change and development. I was happy, but there was no upward trajectory.

JUMPING INTO JOY

Something changed my junior year. I don’t know if it was the drastic changes in the world or how humans had to operate — perhaps it was increased freedom in choosing classes and building my schedule, perhaps it was new people in my life, but something changed. Something in me bulldozed this MIT-sized wall and realized that joy was essential. That trauma and change and confusion and struggle and failure and fear were necessary. That a process could bring more success and growth and excitement than the end goal. That an end goal could shift and the process would not be for naught. That there could and should be a lot I don’t know about the future. For example, some of my favorite teachers shared that their goals and passions changed while they were students. They explained that they thought one thing was for them and stumbled upon something else that brought them so much happiness. And so I realized that my goals, too, could shift and that doesn’t mean they were for nothing or they didn’t fit me, but simply that something else would fit better. The purest development occurs on the path to these new goals. I found joy in the novelty, comfort in redirection, care in people who supported the change, and maturation in realizing that scrapping a goal is not a failure but growth.

FAITH. HEART. INTELLECT.

Faith, heart, and intellect are not three different entities but a skillfully intertwined trio. When all are satisfied, life is all the more fulfilling. But it took me a while to make this connection. Being dead set on my inner nerd, I clung to engineering. I was so stuck on the intellectual that I dreaded leaning on the nurturing and compassionate parts within me. I neglected any desire of my heart as a viable goal. After all, mad science was the height of academic and female prowess. In the name of girl power, I mistook academic validation for

Faith, heart, and intellect are not three different entities but a skillfully intertwined trio. When all are satisfied, life is all the more fulfilling.

personal validation and resisted change. But eventually, without even seeking guidance, I found redirection and support from some incredible faculty members.

THE SUPPORT OF TEACHERS

“Those who can’t, teach.” Certainly a message thrown around. A preemptive expectation that demoralizes the whole for the sake of explaining the few. I was blessed at DSHA with countless teachers who proved that teaching is for those who can, because a phenomenal teacher can change the whole course of your life and help you realize the breadth of your potential. It was these teachers that demonstrated that I could only find fulfillment when my faith, heart, and intellect were woven together. It took a lot of introspection for me to conclude that even though biomedical engineering would certainly flex my mind, I was neglecting my faith and my heart. Accordingly, I longed for a new calling that embraced my desire to share knowledge with others, enabled me to act with empathy and compassion, and included my passion for music. This new calling was answered through experiences like the Angelaires and DSHA theatre. These experiences propelled me through tough academics. And just as essentially, I needed to understand that opting to satisfy both my heart and intellect would not compromise a secure future. I needed faith that I would be held and supported by God and others when making the right choice for me. And some extraordinary teachers helped me settle into this new calling — by one teacher’s story and example, another’s unending support, two more teachers’ willingness to let me experience teaching, and one’s consistent and compassionate prodding, I embraced the goal of music education. These people helped me invalidate and overcome a childhood teacher’s unprompted declaration that I would “be a terrible teacher” and transformed my life-long idle musing of being a teacher into a feasible goal.

A NEW GOAL FOR A NEW JOURNEY

As I set off to begin college at Bucknell University, I am emboldened by my new goal that encapsulates my faith, my heart, and my intellect. And if I end up anything like these remarkable people who guided and supported me, and can offer that guidance and support to even one person on my path, all the change was worth it.

Faith, Heart, & Intellect

Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic, college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior and grounded in their mission to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ, we develop our students into capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect who accept the gospel call to live lives that will make a difference.

Throughout her time at DSHA, Mora Gallegos has grown in her love of math and science, her self-confidence, and her faith. Combining her passion for STEM and her ability to see God in others, she feels compelled to live a life that will make a difference and inspire those around her.

Changing Lives Through STEM

The SMART Team presents their university-level professional poster and 3-D model of their protein at the American Biochemistry and Molecular Biology annual conference in Philadelphia. Pictured from left to right are Kayla Vanderhoef, DSHA ‘22; Charlotte Desjarlas, DSHA ‘25; Katie Mark, DSHA ‘25; Lidia Mora Gallegos, DSHA ‘23; Trinity White, DSHA '23 (front); Josie Marsho, DSHA ‘25; Ashleigh Walsea, DSHA ‘23; and Sawyer Strandberg, DSHA ‘24.

Math and science have always been passions of mine, and after learning about velocity, motion, and physics in eighth grade, I knew I was absolutely in love with science. Since the day I started school at DSHA, I have been provided with the tools to decide what I might want to study and to discover what about science and math really interests me.

DEVELOPING A LOVE FOR STEM

All of the science classes that I have taken at DSHA – Accelerated Biology, Honors Chemistry, and

both AP Biology and AP Chemistry during my junior year – helped me develop a deep appreciation of science, especially for the way biology and chemistry are so intertwined. This relationship and interlacement between the many fields of science is one of the things I love so much about it; everything is related to a certain extent. In addition to this, the unknown and the thought that we still have so much left to discover, to solve, is something that intrigues me and continues to develop my love for science.

19
Lidia Mora Gallegos, DSHA ’23, embodies this part of the DSHA mission:

DSHA

Making a Difference

In the fall of my junior year, I joined DSHA’s SMART (Students Modeling a Research Topic) Team co-curricular. The SMART Team works with a research scientist and conducts secondary research on the topic of their choice. We create an abstract and a 3-D model of the protein or enzyme we are working on. This year, we worked with a scientist from Concordia University on our project entitled Shut the F(AAH) Up: Inhibiting Fatty Acid Amide Hydrolase as a Novel Approach to Pain, which described the FAAH inhibitor that can be used to relieve symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, migraines, arthritis, and other chronic pain conditions. The FAAH inhibitor can be used as a substitute to opioid-based drugs; therefore, it presents a new and important approach to pain relief that reduces the extreme effects that opioid-based drugs can present. After our research is complete, we attend the annual American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology’s Experimental Biology conference in the spring where we present our university-level professional poster and model to scientists from all around the world. This past year the conference took place in Philadelphia.

I believe there is no other way to live life than to make a difference. Whether that difference is big or small, any action or decision made matters in our lives and the lives of others.

Joining SMART Team really changed my life. I was introduced to a whole new aspect of the world of science, and my participation in SMART Team helped shape my future because I discovered I love biomedical sciences. I learned not only of my interest in pharmacy and medicine, but I also learned how capable I am, and how persistent and courageous I can be. Although the thought of presenting the project in front of thousands of people frightened me, with the encouragement and support of my teammates and my teachers, I was able to face my fears. In addition, I had the opportunity to network with many research scientists from around the country at the national conference. I can see myself in them, and I learned that there really is nothing I can’t do.

SELF-CONFIDENCE IN SCIENCE

The all-girls environment of DSHA allows me the space and support to grow in selfconfidence. Anywhere you turn, you encounter welcoming and supportive young women. The all-girls environment of DSHA has helped me grow in self-confidence in science because I have a network of intelligent young women who are always more than willing to provide support. I know that even when I am having a hard time, I can count on my classmates to help me understand. The support of my classmates is always there, which I feel helps us all grow in self-confidence as we come to realize our worth and value at DSHA and in the world.

This confidence shined this summer as I completed an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin through the Office of Student Inclusion and Diversity. Over the length of the seven-week internship, I conducted research, developed an abstract, and presented my findings. In the lab, I worked on cancer research and I was tasked with DNA purification, PCR reactions, and gel electrophoresis, all of which are items I was introduced to in AP Biology at DSHA.

I am so fortunate as a high school student to have access to a lot of the materials we use in classes, and to experience how DSHA thoroughly prepares us to enter the science field. Because of what I have learned at DSHA, I was able to hold an internship at the Medical College of Wisconsin as a high school senior.

CALLED TO LIVE A LIFE THAT WILL MAKE A DIFFERENCE

In addition to the self-confidence I have developed at DSHA, DSHA has also helped me grow in my Catholic faith. DSHA has given me the tools to be able to see God everywhere I go. Whether I am at school, at home, or at my internship, I see God in all those around me.

My Catholic faith has also had an impact on my future. I have always felt God calling me to a field that will allow me to make a difference in the lives of others. I feel God is calling me to work in pharmacy, aiding in the development of treatments that will help provide the world with an array of therapeutic benefits. I hope to major in chemical engineering during my undergraduate studies and then to specialize in pharmacology and attain my PharmD.

I believe there is no other way to live life than to make a difference. Whether that difference is big or small, any action or decision made matters in our lives and the lives of others. Everything we do and every word we speak influences the lives we live and the lives of those around us.

It is ultimately up to us to decide whether we want to inspire a beneficial effect.

We are #gladtobeplaid!

Thank you for making a difference in the lives of the young women of DSHA during Dasher Day of Giving 2022 on May 4!

The DSHA community’s heart is full of love and gratitude for the generous support of alumnae, parents, faculty, staff, grandparents, and other friends of DSHA. You made DSHA history with a record-setting 328 donors, and upon reaching the goal of 300 donors, unlocked a generous $10,000 matching gift from a group of alumnae ranging from the classes of 1994-2005.

Many thanks to all who made gifts large and small in supporting DSHA’s mission to develop young women in faith, heart, and intellect.

We are #gladtobeplaid because of our ALUMNAE.

Norah Jones, DSHA ’94, was a contributor to the $10,000 challenge gift unlocked after reaching a record-breaking 300 donors.

“The reality at an all-girls school where girls are leaders, the ones in charge, and stepping up at every level for me was a really important experience and period of development that would have not been the same had I attended a co-ed school. DSHA gives you the confidence and the knowledge that you can do anything, be a leader, and use your voice.”

We are #gladtobeplaid because of our ADVOCATES.

Erika Hutz, DSHA ’04, was one of our 15 advocates during Dasher Day of Giving. Dasher Day advocates made a gift to DSHA, spread awareness to their peers about the giving day, and encouraged others to join them in making a gift to DSHA. Hutz went a step further and matched some of the dollars gifted by her classmates.

“I give back to DSHA on Dasher Day of Giving because DSHA was an important part of my life. It is a fun time to reminisce and think about the good times I had at DSHA. I am still close friends with many of the women I met in high school, and I have DSHA to thank for my professional success. Girls can do whatever they want to do, and DSHA will help them do just that.”

We are #gladtobeplaid because of our STUDENTS.

Paula Palacio-Enachi, DSHA ’25, was one of the students who shared why she is #gladtobeplaid on the day.

“I love DSHA because of its community. Teachers and students work together to create a safe space for everyone in the classroom. We are all included in the classroom and are never afraid to ask questions and learn from each other.”

DSHA 2021–22 Annual Report 28

The entire DSHA community — parents, friends, foundations, alumnae, businesses, and even our students — were generous in showing support through financial gifts to DSHA during the 2021-2022 fiscal and academic year, contributing $2,420,749 to support current operations and scholarships.

Annual Fund | $ 1,019,320

The generous donors contributing to the DSHA Annual Fund raised the largest amount of dollars in school history for this important fund that covers the gap between the cost of tuition and the full cost of a DSHA education. The annual fund supports the full Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school experience — from scholarships that allow DSHA to enroll the strongest student body possible, to the college-preparatory academics, faith formation, co-curriculars, and support all students receive. Contributions to the annual fund are vital to form young women in faith, heart, and intellect.

Endowment | $ 436,408

The DSHA endowment provides enduring and permanent support to students of today, tomorrow, and of the future, ensuring they will receive the premier Catholic, Salvatorian, college-preparatory education for young women in Milwaukee. The endowment supports scholarships for eager students, as well as faculty professional development and competitive compensation.

DSHA Auction* | $ 391,783

The DSHA community broke out their neon and attended the most gnarly, bodacious, and totally tubular party of the year — the DSHA Forever Plaid Auction — 80s edition! Funds raised during the live and silent auctions support the school’s general operating budget. A favorite portion of the evening occurs during Stop-The-Auction where attendees give in support of Dashers who would not have the means to attend DSHA without the help of generous donations, specifically supporting need-based scholarships. By raising a paddle, guests gave more than $216,545 to scholarships alone.

Specified Gifts | $ 281,815

Scan this QR code to view the 2022 Stop-the-Auction scholarship video.

Occasionally, donors wish to apply their gifts to a specific area of the overall DSHA experience, supporting a specific academic department, fine arts, athletics, or co-curriculars. These gifts support DSHA in developing the whole person in its students.

Scholarship | $ 128,542

Scholarships at DSHA benefit all girls, allowing for an outstanding all-girls, Catholic education with the strongest student body possible. This includes a financial and mission-based commitment to a diverse group of women with different gifts, perspectives, and life experiences. Almost 40 percent of the student body relies on need-based scholarships to receive a DSHA education; additional scholarship awards are given to students for demonstrating strong academic, leadership, and service pursuits, or for exhibiting outstanding character. Ninety-five percent of families who apply for financial aid receive some form of tuition assistance upon acceptance, and the average need-based award is $6,400.

Dash-A-Thon*

| $ 101,041

Dash-A-Thon is an annual school-wide 7 mile walk/run that provides students with fresh air, social time as a community, and a chance to dress in theme. The theme was Dasher Zoo. Most importantly, the event gives students an opportunity to fundraise for and financially give to DSHA. Since its start 38 years ago, Dash-A-Thon has raised millions for DSHA, supporting its mission and the experiences it gives to young women in Milwaukee. Students set a new giving record in 2021-22 — $101,041!

Parent Athletic Association Dasher Golf Outing & Dinner* | $61,840

Parents and friends of DSHA have a PAR-TEE at the PAA Golf Outing, during which all monies raised go directly to the DSHA Athletic Department. The Parent Athletic Association’s only fundraiser, the outing helps provide the best coaches, trainers, and equipment to DSHA student-athletes.

*Special events contributions are net total.

We give to DSHA because it provides an incredibly positive, supportive environment for our daughter to learn and grow during these very important high school years. We fully support DSHA’s mission to develop the whole person — mind, body, and spirit — as well as the school's dedication to helping all young women unlock their full potential in life.

We have felt compelled to give to DSHA for more than 13 years because we believe their mission is constant in developing the whole person. Following my mother, Lori Yordan Stevlingson’s hard work as an auction chair in 2006, I found a passion for assisting in philanthropic activities dedicated to DSHA and throughout the Greater Milwaukee area by both contributing my time and giving monetarily. Through this, I have had the opportunity to see how important these contributions are to helping DSHA continue to achieve its goal of developing young women in their faith, heart, and intellect. Most importantly, beyond graduation, Dashers continue to live lives that make a difference within their own communities and around the world. May God bless the many young women as they deepen their faith and evolve into their full potential.

DSHA 2021–22 Annual Report 46

Q & A

with Dr. Greeta Cherayil Hofbauer, DSHA ‘77

Dr. Greeta Chearyil Hofbauer, DSHA ’77, is a faithful giver to the school she once called home. She gives of her time as a member of the DSHA Alumnae Board, and of her treasure, as she has financially given back to DSHA every year for decades. Gratitude is what compels her to give. She recognizes both the strong education she received at DSHA, as well as the timeless friendships she made, as priceless. She is committed to doing what she can to ensure future Dashers will receive the opportunities and experiences she did.

Hofbauer has a PharmD from the University of Illinois-Chicago and is the Medical Science Liaison Director at Novartis. She lives in Brookfield with her husband and has one son.

Q: Tell me about your time at DSHA.

A: My favorite part of my high school experience at DSHA are the friendships I made while I was there. DSHA was a great choice for me because I met so many people that I still keep in contact with. I made some great friendships through my involvement in the Angelaires. I was also involved in the musicals as part of the ensemble and in the forensics team, doing solo reading of poetry, other types of work, and speech. All of those activities are useful to me even now because I speak to others and educate others as part of my job.

Q: How did DSHA’s all-girls environment impact you?

A: It was a good place to be academically oriented. Women are encouraged to excel. In an all-female environment, all of the leadership roles have to be filled by women. For example, during my freshman year, I was my homeroom’s president. Experiences like that help shape women to be leaders in the future.

Q: How did DSHA’s Catholic identity impact you?

A: I think as a student, it helped confirm the faith and it helped me stay on track as far as being a Catholic. During a time when you’re a teenager and you question everything, it was good to have that Catholic foundation in education, and that foundation strengthened my faith. Some of the things my friends and I did together was go to Mass, even outside of school. Even as adults, I’ve gotten together with other alumnae when we’ve gone somewhere for a weekend, and we still all go to Sunday Mass together.

Q: As an alumna, why do you feel it’s important to give back to DSHA?

A: I give to DSHA because it gave me a strong

47
Highlight
Donor

base to pursue higher education. I have completed my doctorate thanks in part to the fundamentals I learned at DSHA. It also provided a strong foundation in my Catholic faith. I have maintained close friendships with the women I met while at DSHA. I owe much of my life success and friendships to what was started at DSHA. Faith, friends, and fun is how I will always remember my years at DSHA.

Q: Why is it important to you to give back on a regular basis to DSHA’s Annual Fund?

A: It’s good to get into the habit of giving. In the beginning, I gave a little bit. You start out at a little bit and then you can make it a little bit bigger as time goes on and you have more flexibility in your income. Giving and learning to give early gets you into the habit of being a cheerful giver and giving to something that’s important to you. Almost everyone, especially in this country, has so many things to be thankful for, and being a cheerful giver is an important aspect to maintain, even if you have to start small. Every little bit helps.

Q: What do you enjoy about spending your time on the DSHA Alumnae Board?

A: I love having contact with alumnae of all ages. There are some women on the alumnae board that are jubilarians (women that graduated from DS, HA, or DSHA 50 + years ago), and I like hearing their stories. I like that contact with different age groups. Now that I’m getting older, I get to keep up with these young alumnae and hear what’s going on. It’s helpful to be exposed to all different age groups.

Q: Why do you choose to give both of your time to the DSHA Alumnae Board and of your financial treasure?

A: I chose to give back to something that was very beneficial to me, and I’d like to pass that benefit on to other young women. I’m grateful for

DONOR HIGHLIGHT

the education and for the things that others have provided for me at DSHA. In years past, others have donated to make the school what it is today. I am amazed by what I see today. It’s an excellent learning environment for young women. I didn’t have a daughter, so I couldn’t send a student to DSHA. This is my chance to keep the legacy going.

Q: What about DSHA most impresses you today?

A: I love that DSHA has a robotics team (in partnership with MUHS). We are really pushing women to become more involved in STEM. I think that’s excellent and really important. I believe it’s important to immerse girls in STEM. When I was a student, I took advanced science and math classes at DSHA, which led me to pharmacy.

Q: What are your hopes for DSHA in the future?

A: I hope that DSHA continues to really concentrate on educating women for the future but hold faithfully to the Catholic values that are so vital in these times.

Q: If you could speak to a room full of alumnae, what would you say to them?

A: Are you thankful for the education that you received from DSHA and the Sisters of the Divine Savior, and your time spent here? Wouldn’t you want others to have that same experience? Think about just a little donation every year to get into the habit of giving. When you have more, you’ll be able to donate more.

I support DSHA because I believe in our students and our faculty. The good work of our faculty is repeated every class period of every day. It exists in the immeasurable ways the whole staff of the school interacts with students outside of the classroom, and in the work we do collectively to empower these students to make change in the world. We all serve the same goal of taking care of one another and serving our students towards the mission and identity of this school as professed by the Sisters of the Divine Savior. For these reasons, giving to DSHA is important to me as it affirms my commitment to its community.

I give to DSHA because more than a decade later, I continue to call upon the Qualities of the Graduate every single day — in my professional career as well as in my personal relationships. At DSHA, young women are encouraged to live out their potential as believers, self-advocates, critical thinkers, communicators, and leaders. My DSHA experience was truly invaluable and truly a blessing. It is a privilege to share in DSHA’s mission through giving.

The things you do for yourself are gone when you are gone, but the things you do for others remain as your legacy. This quotation, from American political scientist Kalu Ndukwe Kalu, exemplifies the spirit behind the word “giving.” Because “to give” is not just about money, but also about what DSHA has long taught to its students: to support, to learn, to experience, and most importantly, to love. A price cannot be put on an education that continues throughout your life from the foundation formed at DSHA. This is why I continue to give and have DSHA in my will — it will be part of my legacy.

In 2021–2022, generous donors made a difference in the lives of the young women of DSHA by making a gift honoring those who have made a difference in their own lives. These gifts are received in two ways: gifts in memory of a deceased family member, friend, alumnae or supporter of DSHA; or gifts that honor living members of the DSHA community. The individuals who commemorated someone important to them with a gift are listed below each honoree’s name.

DSHA 2021–22 Annual Report 58

SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AT DSHA

Scholarships are bridges — access to this outstanding educational opportunity for outstanding young women regardless of a family's financial circumstances. Scholarship sizes vary depending on a family’s financial need. Nearly 40 percent of DSHA students relied on scholarships, large and small, to attend DSHA in 2021-22.

Scholarships allow DSHA to provide an outstanding college-preparatory, Catholic education to qualified students and enroll the strongest student body possible — including a financial and mission-based commitment to a diverse group of young women with different gifts, perspectives, and life experiences.

Scholarships come in two different forms: endowed and non-endowed. Endowed scholarships provide permanent, perennial support for the type of student identified by the particular donor. Non-endowed scholarships are one-time gifts that support the type of student identified by the donor.
