WHO WE ARE:

A Catholic, Salvatorian, All-Girls High School The DSHA mission, vision, and five Qualities of a DSHA Graduate drive everything we work towards as the only Catholic, Salvatorian, all-girls high school in the country. In these pages, you’ll see the impact of a DSHA education, one that is grounded in the mission of the Sisters of the Divine Savior and in the support for, and love of, one another in this unique sisterhood. The Christ-centered community, and the opportunities for each and every Dasher to develop her passions in all areas of her life, are possible because of your generosity and support.

OUR MISSION Divine Savior Holy Angels High School is a Catholic college-preparatory high school for young women that excels at developing the whole person. Sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior and grounded in their mission to make known the goodness and kindness of Jesus Christ, we develop our students into capable young women of faith, heart, and intellect who accept the gospel call to live lives that will make a difference.

OUR VISION DSHA will be #1: recognized as the premier choice for a girl seeking to grow into her full potential as a woman of faith, heart, and intellect.

QUALITIES OF A DSHA GRADUATE

SHE IS A BELIEVER.

SHE IS A SELF-ADVOCATE.

SHE IS A CRITICAL THINKER.

SHE IS A COMMUNICATOR.

SHE IS A LEADER.

She is a Believer who relies on Catholic Christian values which encourage her to act on God’s call to recognize her gifts and use her voice to pursue justice, live with integrity, and actively improve her world. A faith-filled role model, she demonstrates the highest respect and compassion for herself and for others by living a life that makes a difference.

She is a Self-Advocate, who as a young woman learns to accurately assess her abilities and to recognize and resist the cultural forces and customs that would erode her own emerging sense of self, or cause her to act in conflict with her own values and beliefs. Through systematic opportunities to learn, practice, and master self-advocacy behaviors, she begins to articulate her beliefs and values. She uses her own voice to state her opinion, ask questions, and effectively negotiate for her strongest possible outcome.

She is a Critical Thinker who solves problems, improves processes, and sees what others cannot. She is innovative and creative, her wise counsel and enlightened perspectives highly sought-after. She is an adaptable, analytical, and curious intellectual who pursues deep understanding and trusts her instincts and experience.

She is a Communicator who is articulate, perceptive, and empowered to make her voice heard. She is highly skilled at interpersonal communication, effectively sharing ideas through various means, with various audiences, using advanced technology as needed. She is an active listener who is self-reflective and engaged and is a confident communicator who is unafraid to stand up and say what must be said.

She is a Leader who takes initiative, leading by inspiration and influence. A skilled collaborator, she uses her full potential to motivate individuals and groups to accomplish goals and achieve dreams. She is inclusive, hopeful, and highly ethical; as a visionary leader, she is accountable to herself and to others, bravely forging new paths and building new connections.

DSHA Letter from the Board Chair

Working Together for Each and Every Student Dear DSHA Community, Throughout the 2020 –21 school year, I was reaffirmed in my belief of our unique connection with and to one another. Even in the face of a pandemic, the DSHA community remained a constant. I saw the strength of the community when we rallied as One Body in Christ — in support of the young women of DSHA and one another. The Commitment to Young Women We were blessed this year and remain grateful for a gift of $2 million from an anonymous donor to expand the Beacon Scholarship program. This scholarship provides four-year assistance to high-achieving students of color who would not be able to attend DSHA without financial support. In turn, this program prepares talented young women to become “beacons” in their own community, examples of successful, esteemed leaders who are passionate about making a positive difference in the world. This extremely generous gift is the largest endowed scholarship gift in the history of DSHA, and we stand in admiration of and with gratitude for the family who is committed to helping DSHA create an environment where every girl feels a sense of belonging. This gift will allow us to significantly increase the support we offer to both incoming and existing students of color. We are so thankful. Strengthening the School Setting Our commitment to supporting every student includes improving the environment around her. Our community worked hard to complete the installation of a new HVAC system over the summer. No longer do distractions like the summer heat impact the energy or focus in the classroom. Our students are now learning and mastering their studies and passions comfortably, in a space that uplifts and empowers them. The Commitment to Working Together Another blessing this year was the record amount raised in the 2020–21 DSHA Annual Fund, which helps cover the gap between tuition and the actual cost of a DSHA education. Together we raised more than $950,000 — the largest amount in school history — for every Dasher to receive Catholic faith formation opportunities, college-prep academics, co-curricular involvement, and so much more. And together, when we were able to gather in person for the 2021 DSHA Auction, we showed our love for our DSHA students with an electric energy as we raised funds to further the DSHA mission. If you were unable or did not contribute to DSHA during this past year, please consider a gift this year as the need of our girls is ever-growing. Every gift, no matter the size, gives every girl the opportunity to grow and develop in faith, heart, and intellect. Together we change the lives of young women in Milwaukee. We are united as we move forward into a bright future because of you. Thank you for your generosity and your partnership. With sincere gratitude, Andy Lampereur 2020– 21 DSHA Board Chair

DSHA 2020– 21 Annual Report  6

The Bright Moments As I reflect on the 2020-21 school year, I am grateful and proud of how we have grown closer as one community in the face of many challenges. Despite a year of mostly hybrid learning, our faculty and staff were incredibly intentional and dedicated to maintaining connections and living out our Salvatorian mission throughout the entire year. The creativity and perseverance of our entire school community – students included – leaves me in awe. We have always known DSHA is a special community rooted in our Catholic faith and a sisterhood unlike any other. This was confirmed in a unique way as we navigated a year unique to the world at large. Below are some of the bright spots from the year that I would like to share with you. The Non-Negotiables Back in the spring of 2020, the DSHA leadership team met to discuss our nonnegotiables for the 2020-21 school year, knowing it would present new challenges. The very first thing that was discussed was the commitment to the faith formation of each and every girl. Director of Campus Ministry Stephanie Monson shared that faith formation is personal, and human connection is critical. She articulated that, whenever possible, these experiences needed to be in person. The strength of our faith and the commitment to our Salvatorian, Catholic identity paved the way for a year filled with 57 in-person masses, 32 hours of adoration, 48 hours of confessions offered, 38 rosaries prayed, 12 in-person retreats, 2 virtual retreats, and a class of seniors participating in Vocare, serving at 29 different service organizations throughout the greater Milwaukee area. Reinvention to Maintain Connections The strength of our community became quite clear to me as we began to navigate a year of imposed separation and a desire to reinvent. Each and every member of the faculty and staff became an inventor for the year, asking ourselves, “How can and how should we do this differently?” The ultimate goal was to connect our community and provide the full DSHA mission experience for our girls. From re-inventing hands-on learning in science classrooms, to a virtual live-radio play performance of It’s a Wonderful Life, to a complete restructure of special events, to streaming athletics competitions – the list could go on and on. Our team showed up to provide innovative experiences for our girls – over and over and over again. Better Together The feeling of joy in the moments we were able to come together as a community were so special last year. Each fall, one of our first special events is the Parent Athletic Association Dasher Golf Outing and Dinner. While we had to adjust the event and remove the indoor portion of the evening, we had the most golfers our outing has ever seen. We saw a desire for in-person connection from not only our students, but our parents as well. There was so much energy, love, and joy for the opportunity to be together. Additionally, a specific highlight for our students each year are the annual class retreats run through Campus Ministry. Each class comes together to pray, share, reflect, and celebrate their faith. These retreats are always powerful, and while the structure was completely reworked to allow for a safe environment, we found them to be extra-meaningful this year, as the girls were longing for time to connect outside of their hybrid-learning cohorts. 7

DSHA Letter from the President

Surprises and Celebrations One of the great joys from the 2020-21 school year was the implementation of our Marian Scholars Program, the student-centered, inclusive education program for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our first Marian Scholar, Mia Ruge, DSHA ’24, along with her peer mentors, brought an incredibly special joy to our community. This program elevates our entire school community on so many levels – through the student-to-student mentoring that takes place each day in the classrooms, to teachers supporting our scholar inclusively in the classroom. This program has enriched our school community and we will continue to celebrate as it grows. Additionally, we are incredibly proud of our student-athletes who persevered through variance in practice locations and time, and brought home four state championships this past year! Our Varsity Soccer team captured the state title after not being able to play in the season prior. Varsity Field Hockey won back-to-back titles for the first time in school history. The Varisty Ski team won its third state title in four years, and finally Kathryn Kleckza ’22, took first place in the WIAA State Diving Championship. While our Dashers always compete for state titles, the number of championships amidst the adversity is remarkable and a testament to the character or our girls, their coaches, and the leadership of longtime Athletic Director Peggy Seegers-Braun. Through it all, I found that our community grew in gratitude, taking the time to be present, to listen, and to take notice. The gratitude of our students, faculty, and staff were present through the appreciation of moments big and small; of togetherness through challenge, and for a collective groundedness in our mission. We are a stronger community from the journey we walked together. With a grateful heart, Katie Konieczny, DSHA ’92 President

Scholarships at DSHA

9

DSHA’s commitment to scholarships first and foremost provides an outstanding Catholic, college-preparatory education to qualified students regardless of a family’s financial circumstances. Scholarship funds also help DSHA enroll the strongest student body possible — a diverse group of young women with different gifts, perspectives, and life experiences. In the 2020– 2021 school year, DSHA gave more than $1.8 million in scholarships. Thirty-eight percent of the student body received some form of financial aid, the average need-based award being $6,900. From receiving merit-based scholarships, to need-based awards, students of a variety of backgrounds benefit because of your generosity. On behalf of the students who are given the opportunity to experience all DSHA has to offer, thank you. On the following pages, you will read about three remarkable young women who receive scholarships in different capacities, and the life-changing experiences you have helped make possible.

Kate Spielbauer, DSHA ’21, has a passion to give of herself in service to populations that are often forgotten or isolated in society — specifically the elderly. Working with this population — a population to which the Salvatorians are also dedicated — led her to serve at St. Anne’s Salvatorian Campus throughout her four years at DSHA. Her commitment to St. Anne’s earned her the Salvatorian Service Award from the Sisters of the Divine Savior in 2021, but also the DSHA Alumnae Service Scholarship for the 2020–2021 school year, which ultimately helped her serve with more confidence and purpose.

Forging Connection with the Often Forgotten

By Madeline Zukowski, DSHA ‘11

For six months straight, Kate Spielbauer, DSHA ’21, accompanied and sat with St. Anne’s Salvatorian Campus resident Mel while he ate his dinner. A man with a big heart to match his personality, Mel is a 75-year-old Polish former pastor who loves to talk food. “He makes jokes that his Polish food is so much better than American food. One of his friends visited one day and brought Polish pastries like paczki that I was able to try. His Polish food is superior, I’ll admit,” Spielbauer said with a chuckle, demonstrating an authentic love and care for her friend Mel. Since Spielbauer entered DSHA in 2017, she has served at St. Anne’s Salvatorian Campus, a nursing home and assisted living facility for people of low socio-economic status that is sponsored by the Sisters of the Divine Savior. Between running bingo, playing card games, working in the garden, and planning the famous St. Anne’s Prom for residents and DSHA/MUHS students, Spielbauer spent one-on-one time with residents who don’t have visitors often, forming friendships with them. “Besides the friends in the nursing home or a few outside friends, they don’t have much human interaction,” Spielbauer said of most of the residents. “I like to think that I was that human interaction for them. It brightens their day, makes it a little easier, and excites them.” Living out the Salvatorian core value of the preferential option for the poor, Spielbauer prefers to serve those who are vulnerable in society. Besides working weekly with the elderly, periodically she collected toiletries from her neighbors and community, donating them to the Milwaukee Rescue Mission,

a non-profit homeless shelter rooted in the Catholic faith. “These populations deserve attention as much as anyone else does,” she said. “I think working with them is the most challenging type of service, but they are a part of society that is often forgotten about.” IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF LIFE While Spielbauer served at St. Anne’s in her own time, she became more involved with service through DSHA Campus Ministry, becoming a long-term service coordinator. An advocate of long-term service versus one-time visits, Spielbauer reached out to nursing homes, schools, and homeless shelters for their needs, and tried to connect underclasswomen with sites at which they could serve consistently. DSHA Campus Ministry helped Spielbauer connect with her faith in more ways than one. She was able to connect her faith to her own community, but was also able to put it in perspective with the outside world. “A big part of my faith today, which is different from four years ago, is service and learning what makes people the way they are; what puts people in lower socio-economic levels, nursing homes, or homeless shelters,” she said. “I have learned that how I live out my faith makes a difference in the world.” She found herself able to connect with God through her work with residents at St. Anne’s. She points to the importance of the mission of the organization to help all residents live a dignified life, no matter their circumstances. Because of this idea, Spielbauer better understands what it means to be Salvatorian. “A core idea of the Salvatorian way is to put others before yourself and care for everyone,” she said. “In my life, that means caring for the elderly and homeless people, recognizing their needs, figuring out ways I can address them, and making their lives better.”

I have learned that how I live out my faith makes a difference in the world. Kate Spielbauer, DSHA ’21

RESPONSIBLE STEWARDSHIP Now a freshman at Texas Christian University, Spielbauer hopes to find an organization to serve at throughout her four years that works with those who are often forgotten — specifically the homeless, as Texas has a high homeless population. After she graduates, her dream is to travel to South America and help bring medical care to those in need. “When I’m sick, I have the liberty to call my physician,” she said. “It’s incredibly important to have access to health care, and I want to give that opportunity to people who need it or don’t have easy access to it.” In 2020, Spielbauer had the opportunity to apply for the DSHA Alumnae Service Scholarship. A committee of about 10 alumnae who honor DSHA’s Catholic tradition of service read each application, letters of recommendation, and service reflections, and then chose one student based on her tremendous effort to serve the poor and vulnerable. “It was exciting to see that other people connected to my passions,” Spielbauer said. “It was powerful to learn that I not only care about the elderly and homeless, but other people cared enough about it to select me. I’m so grateful. It gave me a lot of motivation to continue to do what I’m doing.” While a part of her tuition was covered by this merit-based scholarship, Spielbauer used the money she would have spent on tuition on St. Anne’s — helping the residents build a garden. Just like the alumnae committee believed in Spielbauer and her service to the community, so did her DSHA sisters. “I found people at DSHA that encouraged me to the best version of myself,” she said. “They challenge me to do the right thing. They encourage me to keep going back and share my time and talents with others.” n DSHA 2020– 21 Annual Report  12

Kayla Vanderhoef, DSHA ’22, has had a multitude of opportunities, including the college-prep academics and leadership roles she has had throughout her four years at DSHA. She is also heavily involved in recruiting future Dashers, drawing on her own experiences. Her goal is simple: to show others it is worth working hard — and seizing opportunities — in hopes of a bright future.

Leading Others to Opportunites By Madeline Zukowski, DSHA ‘11

When Kayla Vanderhoef, DSHA ’22, graduated from St. Mary Parish School in Hales Corners four years ago, she was set to attend St. Thomas More High School in Milwaukee, her father’s alma mater. She and her parents toured DSHA just to check it off the list, to solidify that Thomas More was, in fact, the right place. But after the tour, everything changed. Vanderhoef knew she belonged at DSHA. “In middle school I excelled, and I wanted to be pushed even more, and I thought this was a good place to do that,” she said. “Hard work is something my family and I value a lot. I knew (at DSHA) if I was challenged, I would work hard to excel.” PUTTING IN THE EFFORT What she saw at DSHA during that tour — and her work ethic since her first day freshman year — led her to help other girls discover the all-girls, Catholic school for themselves. Vanderhoef is currently a student recruiter at DSHA, visiting area middle schools to introduce girls to the special experiences she has had, giving tours of the school to interested families at DSHA Open House, and helping with events for incoming freshman and potential future Dashers. “DSHA has given me so many opportunities, and I want to tell girls and families more about it and how great of a place it is for me,” she said. 15

While Vanderhoef chose DSHA because of its academics and was drawn to challenging courses like Accelerated Biology and Advanced Algebra right out of the gate, the leadership experiences she has had helped her formation in other areas. In addition to recruiting for DSHA, she has been a captain on the school’s swim team since her sophomore year and has been involved in Student Council — specifically the Student Ambassador branch of the council — since freshman year. “My leadership opportunities have helped me improve working with other people,” she said. “They have forced me to have an open mind and work with people who have different ideas and incorporate all of our different ideas into one thing.”

DSHA Heart Feature

I want girls to know that DSHA is a wonderful school because there are so many experiences awaiting them to get involved, grow in their faith, and make new friends. Kayla Vanderhoef, DSHA ’22

A major event that the Student Ambassador committee organizes is the Middle School Leadership Conference. Seventh and eighth graders from area private and public schools send students who exemplify leadership to a day-long event at DSHA. The middle school students attend breakout sessions led by Dashers; topics range from leadership skills to teamwork. Vanderhoef had planned to co-lead the conference in the 2020–2021 school year, but due to COVID-19, the conference did not take place as planned. While she is taking steps to run it in the 2021–2022 school year, she has helped with the planning process before. Planning the Middle School Leadership Conference involves reaching out to the area and private schools, recruiting DSHA students to lead breakout sessions, and making schedules for every middle school student who attends the conference, depending on her preferred breakout sessions. While the staff student council advisor oversees the process, the student leaders are very much in the trenches of their projects. “A lot of it depends on you and how much effort you put into it,” Vanderhoef said when asked what she has learned by working as though she was a professional planning this event. “If you don’t care, no one else will care, and it’s not going to mean anything. You have to put in your full effort and put yourself in the shoes of the girls who want to come and do this.” WHAT MATTERS MOST While Vanderhoef has worked hard to help shape middle school girls’ futures, she is busy shaping her own. In addition to strengthening her Catholic faith through DSHA Campus Ministry events, she is a member of the SMART (Students Modeling A Research Topic) Team. The SMART team offers girls a chance to enhance and extend the hands-on STEM learning they receive in their academic classes by working all year long — with the help of research scientists — on learning about and building a model of a protein, and then professionally presenting their research at the Milwaukee School of Engineering and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Through this experience, Vanderhoef learned that she would like to go into scientific research to study Alzheimer’s, a disease from which her grandpa passed away. THE VALUE OF SCHOLARSHIP Whether it’s working hard in the classroom, encouraging girls to discover the DSHA difference, or working with proteins, Vanderhoef is well aware that these opportunities would not be possible without the help of her partial, renewable need-based scholarship. “[Receiving a scholarship] has really taught me to value the opportunities I get and to make the best of this experience,” she said. “My parents work so hard to give me everything and I just want to make them proud and I really care about the sacrifices they have given to send me to DSHA.” That is the basis of the message that Vanderhoef wants to give to girls: DSHA is possible for many families who may struggle to afford it because of donors who give to student financial aid. And it’s worth working hard to get everything out of the DSHA experience. “I know girls who want to come to DSHA, but then they can’t because of the cost,” Vanderhoef said. “I’m able to say I have financial aid and it is do-able. I also want girls to know DSHA is such a wonderful school because there are so many experiences awaiting them to get involved, grow in their faith, and make new friends. It is a unique and a special place, with rigorous academics, supportive and considerate teachers, and leadership opportunities for every girl. I’m so grateful for what DSHA has taught and provided me.” n DSHA 2020– 21 Annual Report  16

Natalia Beans, DSHA ’23, is a determined young woman. She is committed to working hard for a fruitful future and remaining connected to those around her, opportunities she can take advantage of thanks to her need-based scholarship. Although Beans was a fully virtual student in the 2020–21 school year, she worked to engage herself in her schoolwork and form relationships outside of an in-person classroom environment — proving nothing is standing in her way.

— in the 2020–21 school year so she will be prepared to take AP Calculus as a senior. Not only did she jump into these rigorous courses, but she also studied them while unable to step foot in the physical classroom.

Pursuing Academic Excellence in Community By Madeline Zukowski, DSHA ‘11

Growing up, Natalia Beans, DSHA ’23, had high expectations placed on her, coupled with family members who showed her the importance of working hard to achieve. “I know that I should have a purpose in life,” she said. “I owe it to myself, and to the world, and mainly to God to make a change in the community or even in the world. The best way to get there is to challenge myself academically.” A student who enjoys science and mathematics, Beans chose to take Honors Chemistry and two math courses — Geometry and Honors Algebra II 19

BECOMING A SELF-ADVOCATE Due to a combination of factors, including protecting her own health (Beans is a cancer survivor, now 12 years in remission), and having an elderly grandmother living at home, Beans made the difficult decision to learn virtually throughout the entirety of the school year, both during months of hybrid instruction and when most students came back full-time in the spring. But just because she was learning virtually didn’t mean she was any less connected than her peers in the classroom. DSHA had the ability to livestream students who were learning virtually into the classroom, and virtual students were expected to attend their classes. English Faculty Andy Lelinski and Mathematics Faculty Dawn Gardner both noted that Beans went above and beyond, and was not only present, but was also a self-advocate for her own education while learning virtually. “I wanted to participate (while I was virtual),” Beans said. “It wasn’t that being virtual made me quiet or silent, it made me want to participate more and get my opinions out there … I wanted to show everyone and even myself that your typical virtual student isn’t just someone who turns off their camera and sneaks away from class. You can work and learn virtually. It’s going to be harder, clearly, but that’s why it was so important to me to participate more.” POWER IN NUMBERS When preparing to take challenging courses within the boundaries of virtual learning, Beans first set her mentality straight. She kept reminding herself that this was the not the time to neglect her studies and placed

DSHA Intellect Feature

importance on being prepared when eventually she did come back to school full time in the fall of 2021. Second, she used the resources around her to stay on track. “I always stayed engaged with my teachers, asked questions inside and outside of class, and asked my peers outside of class for help and assistance, just so I could stay in the academic loop of things,” she said. Beans explained that nothing can replace being in a classroom. She commented on the connection and energy that is felt inside a classroom full of her peers. Not having her classmates next to her to keep her going was difficult, but she names a number of her teachers who did what they could to keep her and all students — whether they were in-person or virtual — feel they were in community with one another. “(My teachers) never made me feel like I was learning alone, which is important,” Beans said. During a unique year, teachers took the time to ask how students were feeling and coping with a world that at times seemed upside down. Beans was often the first to raise her hand to answer those questions so she could voice not only her feelings about being virtual, but also speak for those students who were learning virtually right alongside her — both in the hybrid model in the fall and in the spring when only some students remained virtual. “In the world, in school especially, you don’t go through things alone,” she said. “Especially in high school, it’s always important to make connections and talk to people. You’re heard that way. Two people are stronger than one; three are stronger than two. There’s power in numbers and the feeling connected to those numbers. If it’s mutual, it creates a unification that is impactful. It just helps to know you’re not alone.”

I know that I should have a purpose in life... I owe it to myself, and to the world, and mainly to God to make a change in the community or even the world. The best way to get there is to challenge myself academically. Natalia Beans, DSHA ’23

FINDING HERSELF Although DSHA has gone through various models of learning during the pandemic, from a fully virtual format to hybrid to a fully in-person format currently, the core values of the school never changed, Beans said. The empowerment she feels and the Catholic faith formation opportunities she experiences are aspects of the DSHA education she cherishes. “At this point in my life as a teenager, with more homework and more things outside of school, I can feel distracted (from my faith),” Beans said. “If I attended a high school that wasn’t so focused around faith, I feel like I might lose sight of God and how much He loves me. It’s a blessing to know He’s always there and I have the chance to learn more about Him and my faith.” Her relationship with God, her academics at DSHA, and her experience with leukemia as a child, have brought her to consider a medical career working with cancer patients. “I want to give back to the people who were in the same situation I was in,” she said. “God saved me for a reason, and that reason is to give back to those with cancer.” While her passion isn’t something to take lightly, neither is her gratitude for those who have helped her get to where she is today. “My need-based scholarship gave me opportunity,” she said. “The whole scholarship program in and of itself is giving so many people the chance to show who they are. I’m extremely grateful for that. Some students want to hide it, but receiving financial help is nothing to be ashamed of. “Being at DSHA allows me the opportunity to be myself. I am able to prove to other people and myself that I can be whoever I want to be, work hard, and know I have bright future ahead of me.” n DSHA 2020– 21 Annual Report  20

DASHER DAYS:

A Celebration of Community and Connectedness The first annual Dasher Days — held May 8 -15 — celebrated the DSHA community with the intention of connection. What resulted was an incredible display of Dashers near and far, current and alumnae, giving back to each other through their time, talent, treasure, and friendship.

SUNDAY May 9

Community-Wide Hail Mary in Honor of Mother’s Day While Dashers celebrated and/or spent time with their mothers on Mother’s Day, they were asked to honor the Queen Mother by praying a collective Hail Mary at noon.

SATURDAY May 8 Volunteering at Just One More Ministry Current parents and students of the DSHA community spent their morning serving at Just One More Ministry, a Milwaukee nonprofit that gives prepared food from local suppliers to local community organizations that seek to address food insecurity. Dashers sorted perishable and nonperishable food items, packed bags for distribution, and learned more about the hungry in our community. 23

MONDAY May 10

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Presentation DSHA President Katie Konieczny, DSHA ’92, Principal Dan Quesnell, and other members of the academic administration met virtually with community members to discuss the diversity, equity, and inclusion work in which DSHA is engaged, and the impact this work is making in the lives of current students.

TUESDAY May 11 WEDNESDAY May 12 Virtual Rosary with the Sisters of the Divine Savior

Dasher Day of Giving 2021

DSHA alumnae came together virtually to pray the Rosary. S. Grace Mary Croft, SDS, DS’ 56, and S. Carol Thresher, SDS, DS ’59, led the prayers over Zoom.

Hundreds of alumnae; current, past, and prospective parents; former and current faculty and staff; and other friends of DSHA financially supported college-prep academics, numerous faith formation opportunities, and scholarships during the fourth annual Dasher Day of Giving.

THURSDAY May 13

FRIDAY May 14

Supporting DSHA Athletics and Fine Arts The DSHA experience is not complete without co-curricular experiences. Community members were encouraged to attend (either in person or virtually) that night’s HandbellPalooza, purchase tickets to the summer’s production of Godspell, or make plans to cheer on one of DSHA’s spring athletic teams.

SATURDAY May 15

Chopped: The DSHA Edition Similar to the show on The Food Network, Dasher families competed against one another to create a meal with a secret ingredient. Chef Adam Pawlak, owner of Egg & Flour MKE and former contestant on season 19 of Hell’s Kitchen, was the judge. Michael and Mimi Goller (parents of Vivian, DSHA ’23), and friends received top prize and won a pasta-making lesson from Chef Adam for their creative meal of lamb, Pommes Anna, and a parfait. This event raised funds for the DSHA Auction, which helps further the mission of DSHA. DSHA Auction: Together Plaid The DSHA community was able to gather in person under an outside tent or virtually from home at the annual DSHA Auction to help further the mission of DSHA. After bidding on live and silent auction items, which supported operational expenses, attendees participated in Stop-the-Auction for scholarships. After hearing scholarship stories from Pri McDonald, DSHA ’21, and Mackenzie Stewart, DSHA ’21, the community raised $148,706 for scholarships for young women in Milwaukee who would not be able to attend DSHA without the support of scholarships. DONOR CONTRIBUTIONS The entire DSHA community — parents, friends, foundations, alumnae, businesses, and even our students — were generous in showing support through financial gifts to DSHA during the 2020–2021 fiscal and academic year, contributing $4,276,911 to support current operations and scholarships.

ENDOWMENT

$ 2,110,514

Endowment | $ 2,110,514 The DSHA endowment provides enduring and permanent support to students of today, tomorrow, and of the future, ensuring they will receive the premier Catholic, college-preparatory education for young women in Milwaukee. The endowment supports scholarships for eager students, as well as faculty professional development and competitive compensation. This year, we had a very special anonymous gift of $2 million to specifically support our Beacon Scholarship program. The Beacon Scholarship is given annually to high-achieving students of color who reside in Milwaukee. This scholarship fully funds a student’s education. The recipients, in return, serve as “beacons” in their communities — model students and citizens who are on a path to outstanding success in higher education and their professional careers.

Annual Fund | $955,601 In a year that looked different from any the school has seen due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the generous donors contributing to the DSHA Annual Fund raised the largest amount of dollars in school history for this important fund that covers the gap between the cost of tuition and the full cost of a DSHA education. The annual fund supports the full Catholic, all-girls high school experience — from scholarships that allow outstanding young women the opportunity to be a part of the DSHA community, to the academics, faith formation, co-curriculars, and student support they receive. Contributions to the annual fund are vital to form young women in faith, heart, and intellect. Due to the uncertainties surrounding the year of mostly-hybrid learning, we are especially grateful for our donors who entrusted their dollars to DSHA in a record-breaking fashion.

25

Scholarship | $491,516 Scholarships allow young women to attend DSHA regardless of their financial situation, allowing DSHA to build a diverse, equitable, and inclusive campus for all students and the families that support them. Because of scholarships, exceptional students have the opportunity to earn an equally exceptional education in the Catholic, all-girls environment. Almost 40 percent of the student body relies on need-based scholarships to receive a DSHA education; additional scholarship awards are given to students for demonstrating strong academic, leadership, and service pursuits, or for exhibiting outstanding character. Scholarships not only benefit individuals, but all students. They create a stronger learning environment at DSHA, make the school more representative of its surrounding diverse community, help girls embrace and respect differences in background and perspective, as well as widen students’ outlook on their city, community, and world.

Specified Gifts | $318,153 Occasionally, donors wish to apply their gift to a specific area of the overall DSHA experience, supporting items such as a specific department, fine arts, athletics, or co-curriculars. These gifts support DSHA in developing the whole person in its students.

DSHA Auction* | $277,929 The DSHA Auction — Together Plaid, is one of the school’s time-honored annual traditions, and the largest fundraising event of the year. This year’s event took place outside in May, and was the first in-person event of 2021 for our DSHA community due to COVID-19. Funds raised during the live and silent auctions support the school’s general operating budget. A favorite portion of the evening occurs during Stop-The-Auction, where attendees give in support of Dashers who would not have the means to attend DSHA without the help of generous donations; this part of the night specifically supports need-based scholarships. By raising a paddle, guests gave more than $148,706 for scholarships alone.

Dash-a-Thon* | $67,213 Dash-a-Thon is an annual school-wide 7 mile walk/run that provides students with fresh air, social time as a community, and a chance to dress in theme. Most importantly, the event gives students an opportunity to financially give to DSHA. Since its start 38 years ago, Dash-a-Thon has raised millions for DSHA, supporting its mission and the experiences it gives to young women in Milwaukee. This year’s event took place virtually — students raised funds, but walked in small groups or on their own dressed in Disney theme. Alumnae were invited to participate as well.

Parent Athletic Association Dasher Golf Outing & Dinner* | $55,985 Parents and friends of DSHA have a PAR-TEE at the PAA Dasher Golf Outing and Dinner, during which all monies raised go directly to the DSHA Athletic Department. The Parent Athletic Association’s only fundraiser, the outing helps provide the best coaches, trainers, and equipment to DSHA student athletes. *Special events contributions are net total.

We give to DSHA because it has provided the loving environment, rigorous academics, and positive social network to allow our daughter, Maggie, DSHA ’24, to thrive. DSHA set me up with the values to be a successful leader in business and politics. I was a work-study student and took an assignment working at the school’s new computer lab. My love for technology and innovation began there and many years later has led me to a successful career in Silicon Valley. I also learned the value of service over self which is why in addition to a full-time executive job and raising two girls, I also serve as the Vice Mayor of my city. I donate to DSHA because I am inspired by the work the school is doing around diversity, equity, and inclusion and how that work will empower the next generation of leaders. —Giselle Schmitz Hale, DSHA ’97

DSHA has given me a foundation for success both spiritually and intellectually to be the woman of Christ I am called to be. I am equipped to be an advocate for myself in my professional career and I have the skills necessary to make an impact. I give back to DSHA so that other young women may have a strong sense of identity in Christ while becoming well-equipped for college and beyond. —Mary Kate Eberle, DSHA ’14 39

As a recipient of an all-girls, Catholic high school education, I want to ensure that this opportunity continues for all girls. For me, it is a privilege to support DSHA, a school that allows one to grow in faith and friendship, to discover knowledge and think critically, and to learn how to lead, communicate, and self-advocate. It is rather simple; I support DSHA because I believe in the mission of DSHA. —Theology Faculty Mary Duffy

We have been committed for over 20 years to helping build and maintain DSHA as a strong, vibrant, diverse community that prepares young women spiritually, intellectually, and emotionally for the complex world in which we all live. We give to DSHA because we continue to believe in the vital importance of this and in DSHA’s strength to successfully fulfill this mission. It takes a committed community of young women and their parents, faculty, staff, alumnae, and old friends working together to make this happen. We are honored to be among the old friends and ask God to continue to bless our school community. — DSHA Past President Ellen Bartel and Michael Bartel

Q: Tell us about your experience at Divine Savior High School.

Q &A

with Judy Carney Keyes, DS ’58

Judy Carney Keyes, DS ’58, is an enthusiastic supporter of the school she once called home, financially giving back for decades, serving on its board in the past, and always being willing to help. A prominent female leader in the Milwaukee community and playing a role in numerous organizations over the years, she continues to pursue her life’s work, volunteering to teach mathematics to those who need help or need a challenge. It is her firm belief that if one enjoys something, she or he should feel an obligation to support it at some level; she especially feels this way when it comes to DSHA.

A: The school building was rather new at the time, and we had these young Salvatorian Sisters who were our teachers. They were dynamic. I remember in my English class, we were reading and writing and forming opinions about topics. It was exciting because we were being taught to actually think critically. It was such a joy. Sister M. Rosaria, SDS, helped me develop a love for math. Math is still a huge part of my life. There were so many girls to meet from all over the city. Pizza was just starting to become a thing back then, and when we gathered on a Friday night at a pizza parlor, it was such fun. Q: How did Divine Savior’s all-girls, Catholic environment impact you? A: The all-girls, Catholic environment had a tremendous impact on me. We were encouraged to have ideas. Our principal, Sister M. Charlene, SDS, HA ’32, was supportive of these creative ideas in many different areas and allowed us to try them out, organize, and manage those ideas. I was raised in a strong Catholic family, and my faith formation experience at Divine Savior led me to be involved in helping others after college. I worked at the Newman Center, a Catholic ministry center often found at secular universities, at the University of Oklahoma before starting my degree. Q: What impact did Divine Savior have on your role in the community, and giving of yourself in service to various organizations? A: Once my kids were older, I decided to get more active in the community at large. I love music, and so I became a docent at the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra, preparing youth for concerts. I met different people through that organization — people of different religions and backgrounds. I then got

involved in inner city tutoring. I learned that I needed to get out of my bubble of where I lived and went to church to make an impact. Perhaps because ideas were so welcome in high school, I often had suggestions on how things in the volunteer world could be improved. But if you have an idea, you better be ready to pick it up and organize it yourself. Q: Why do you give to DSHA? A: I believe that all-girls, single sex education is a vital option. It’s not for everybody, but without DSHA we wouldn’t have a high-quality option and a high volume of girls taking advantage of it. To not have DSHA as a choice for girls would be a shame. Q: Why is all-girls education so critical? A: Every student who leads a group or is a captain on a sports team is a girl. Girls have leadership opportunities and experiences they wouldn’t have in a co-ed environment. There is never a thought that a boy should be running this or planning that. Q: You give to DSHA in two ways, through the Cornerstone Society (through your estate plan) and through the Judy Carney Keyes, DS ’58, Scholarship Fund. Why is it important to you to give in both ways? A: The school depends on financial support, both in the endowment and on a year-after-year basis. It’s important to me that DSHA has finances to count on year after year to give it a solid background. I also want to make sure that needs are met going forward, especially when it comes to scholarships. Q: Your scholarship fund supports Latina students. What is your hope in designating a scholarship to Latina students? A: DSHA makes an impact on students of many cultures and backgrounds. I volunteer at Notre Dame School of Milwaukee, which primarily serves

Latina students, and we see girls who went to DSHA have terrific growth and go out into the community to make a difference. The girls become nurses, accountants, and teachers who come back to teach at Notre Dame. The Latina students come from strong families who support their daughter’s education and know the value of a DSHA education. Q: You graduated from Divine Savior decades ago, yet you remain committed to and involved at DSHA. Why? A: I want to see the school succeed. Part of supporting the school is showing up. It’s one thing to write a check, but the motivation to see the students and the school is an important part. I used to serve on the Board of Directors, and when my granddaughter, Madeline Keyes, DSHA ’14, was at DSHA, I never missed a Grandparent Liturgy or orchestra concert. I continue to read about the school and stay in touch with those on the board and committees and ask questions about the school. Having a physical presence is important — showing up is often as important as what you do when you get there. Q: What message do you want to pass along to current students? A: Going to school at DSHA is just the beginning of the giving back process. For the school to have your support going forward is important, especially your financial support. It doesn’t matter what dollar amount you give, but the fact that you’re supporting DSHA is what matters. Q: What are your hopes for the future of DSHA? A: I hope that DSHA continues to form girls who are thinkers, think on all sides of an issue, and aren’t afraid to act on what they believe. I hope that there continues to be an acceptance of different cultures and other’s ideas and an interaction between those of different backgrounds. n DSHA 2020– 21 Annual Report  50

Like every great learning institution, DSHA is constantly evolving to meet the needs of students, faculty, staff, and families while remaining true to our mission. SCHOLARSHIP FUNDS AT DSHA

Scholarships are bridges — access to this outstanding educational opportunity for outstanding young women who do not have the financial means to experience DSHA. Scholarship sizes vary depending on a family’s financial need. Nearly 38 percent of DSHA students relied on scholarships, large and small, to attend DSHA in 2020–21. Scholarships come in two different forms: endowed and non-endowed. Endowed scholarships provide permanent, perennial support for students with qualities identified by the particular donor. Non-endowed scholarships are one-time gifts that support students with qualities identified by the donor.

I give to DSHA because it is a premier educational institution for young women. I consider myself and my younger sister (Josepha Walker James, DSHA ‘74) fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend DSHA. The school provides young women an environment that supports and puts forth the solid notion that women are just as intellectually capable as our male counterparts and can be high achievers and contribute profoundly to our communities, our cities, and our world at large. —Carolyn Walker Biggs-Harris, DS ‘70
