Dear Jag fans and guests, Welcome to the campus of Spain Park High School. As you watch tonight’s game, we invite you to enjoy the culmination of the vision our community, our school system, and our parents have for the students of Spain Park High School. We are fortunate to have the finest facilities in Alabama, where our students can learn, grow, perform, and compete to the best of their abilities. Looking ahead to the 2020-2021 season, we anticipate exciting games each week, as we compete in the most challenging region of Class 7A football this state has to offer, and we look forward to having you, our fans - the best anywhere - to share in this excitement. We owe many thanks to those who will work tirelessly to make this season possible: To our coaching staff for preparing our players to meet the challenges of competition. To our band directors and sponsors for working with our students to provide entertainment and support for all of us to enjoy every week. To our Gridiron Club and other support groups for making our events first class. Most importantly, to our students, who train, perform, and compete with great dedication and pride to represent Spain Park in a positive manner. Please take note of our supporters, advertisers, and game day sponsors, who have monetarily supported our athletic program. Whenever possible, please do business with them and thank them for their continued support of Spain Park High School. The Spain Park administration, faculty, and coaching staff emphasize good sportsmanship and fair play at all of our contests. ATHLETIC DEPT. PATRICK KELLOGG ATHLETIC DIRECTOR
Patrick Kellogg is entering his ninth year as athletic director. He came to Spain Park High School in 2012 after serving as assistant principal for Mountain Brook High School from 2006-2012. Patrick also spent eight years at Pelham High School teaching English and was the head track and field coach as well as an assistant football coach. Patrick graduated from Troy University in 1997 with a Bachelor of Science degree in English; he also received his Master’s degree from Troy in 1998. In 2009, he earned his Education Specialist degree from the University of Montevallo. During his time at Troy, Patrick earned three varsity letters in cross-country and track and field. He was all conference in the former Mid Continent Conference and was selected as team captain. Patrick is married to the former Katie Ferguson of Pelham and has two daughters, Charlotte (12) and Audrey (9).
CARMEN STARR ATHLETIC ASSISTANT
Carmen is in her thirteenth year with Spain Park Athletics. Previously, she was the Executive Office Manager for the Birmingham Steeldogs. Her husband, Robert Starr, has been at Spain Park since it’s opening in 2001 and is the head coach of the four-time state championship girls’ soccer team. Their son, Cole Starr, is a Spain Park graduate. He is a junior at Huntingdon College and plays football, being named Second Team All-Conference in 2019.
RACHEL D’AMICO ATHLETIC BOOKKEEPER
Rachel is in her fourth year at Spain Park. She played volleyball at Vestavia Hills High School, then went on to attend the University of Alabama and JSU. Working in sports has been in Rachel’s family for quite some time as her grandfather was a football coach and her father a basketball coach. Prior to coming to Spain Park, Rachel was the Assistant Varsity Volleyball Coach for the 2015-2016 Vestavia Hills Rebels.

HEAD COACH - SHAWN RANEY Shawn Raney begins his seventh year as Spain Park’s Head Coach. Coach Raney is a native of Erick, Oklahoma. He was a two-year starter at strong safety at Northwestern Oklahoma State, where he received All Conference honors and was twice slected as the conference Defensive Player of the Week. Raney also served as team captain. He received his B.S. Degree in Math Education in 1991.
2010-12 Hoover High Defensive Coordinator During Coach Raney’s tenure at Hoover High, Hoover allowed 10 points a game in 2010, 15 points per game in 2011, and 9 points per game in 2012. Hoover fielded the top-rated defense in the state and won the State Title in 2012, after being runner up in 2010 and 2011.

Coach Raney coached at Iowa State for Head Coach Gene Chizik. Among Raney’s former players at Iowa State was Leonard Johnson of the Tampa Bay Bucs.
2004-06 UAB, Defensive Backs 1999-2003 Butler Community College, Defensive Coordinator
Coach Raney was Defensive Coordinator and Defensive Backs coach at BCCC in El Dorado, Kansas. While at Butler, the Grizzlies won the NCAA National Championships in 1999 and 2003. In 2002, Butler led the nation in scoring defense. He had 5 players at Butler named to the All-American team.
Prior to 1999
His coaching career began at Oklahoma State University as a graduate assistant before becoming Defensive Coordinator at Yukon (OK) High School where he spent 7 years. During those years, Yukon made five playoff appearances and finished as state runner-up in Oklahoma’s largest class in 1997.

VARSITY COACHING STAFF Coach Chris Bell OFFENSIVE LINE
Coach Bell enters his ninth season as Spain Park’s Offensive Line Coach. His previous coaching stops were Auburn University (student assistant), East Paulding High School (GA), Shades Valley High School, and Chelsea High School. Coach Bell was a member of the Alabama Air National Guard (187th Fighter Wing) from 2000-2006. Coach Bell is a Weaver High School graduate (1999), earned his Bachelor’s Degree from Auburn University (2004), and his Master’s Degree from Jacksonville State University (2012). He has two children - Jackson (13) and Laura Kate (11).
Coach Bob Bietighofer RUNNING BACKS
“Coach B” is in his fifth year coaching running backs at Spain Park High School. He graduated from Lassiter High School in Marietta, GA and earned his Bachelor’s Degree from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Coach B also coaches Freshman Boys Basketball, and previously coached at Thompson Middle School. Coach Bietighofer is married to Cyndye, and they have two children, Merryn (30) and Nick (26).
Coach Patrick Bonovitch WIDE RECEIVERS
A graduate of Auburn University in 2015 and a Birmingham native, this year will be Patrick’s sixth year teaching in the Hoover School System and coaching at Spain Park. Patrick currently teaches Physical Education at Rocky Ridge Elementary School and is the Offensive Coordinator for the Spain Park Freshman team. Patrick played football at Vestavia Hills High School, and has been married to Ashley since April of 2016.

VARSITY COACHING STAFF Coach Eric Gibbons
LINEBACKERS | STRENGTH & CONDITIONING Eric Gibbons in the Head Strength & Conditioning Coach as well as a teacher at Spain Park High School. He was nominated for the 2012 NSCA National Strength Coach of the Year Award. Prior to coming to Spain Park, he served as Head Strength Coach at Prattville High School, as well as the Strength and Speed Coordinator for One-on-One Kicking. In 2008, he obtained a Master’s of Science in Education Degree from Troy University. While at Troy, he worked as a graduate assistant (GA) for Strength & Conditioning for two years, GA for Football for one year, and was an adjunct faculty member of the college. He is a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist with the National Strength and Conditioning Association. In 2005, he graduated from Colorado State University, where he earned a degree in Health and Exercise Science. He is married to wife, Kalika, and has two daughters, Elaina (14) and Peyton (11).
Coach Matt Hall KICKERS
Matt Hall came to the SPHS faculty and coaching staff in the fall of 2004. During his nineteen-year teaching and coaching career, he has taught various subjects in the social science field, concentrating on US History as his primary vocation. He joined the football staff in 2015. He began with the Freshman staff and joined the Varsity team in 2018. His primary responsibility is to work with the kickers and punters and help assist Special Teams coach, Brian Maner. Coach Hall has served as Head Coach for the Spain Park Varsity Boys Soccer team since 2015. A college graduate of Samford University in 2001, he holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Social Science and completed his Master’s Degree of Educational Leadership at Montevallo University in 2018. He lives in Birmingham with his wife Lauren and two sons, Jackson and Barrett.

VARSITY COACHING STAFF Coach Keat Litton TIGHT ENDS/FULLBACKS
Coach Litton begins his fifth season at Spain Park. He coaches Tight Ends and Fullbacks and also serves as the Head Boys Golf Coach at Spain Park. Coach Litton is a graduate of Homewood High School (1996) and Auburn University (2000). While attending Homewood High School, Coach Litton was a member of the 1995 5A Football State Championship team and also lettered in baseball. Coach Litton and his wife, Allison, have 2 children - Laine (11) and Davis (9).
Coach Brian Maner
SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR/DEFENSIVE BACKS Coach Maner begins his eleventh year at Spain Park. Coach Maner played football at Austin High School and Livingston University. He began his coaching career as an assistant coach at Livingston University. Coach Maner became Head Coach at Cordova High School in 1993. In 1995, his Cordova team won the 3A State Championship. He was named 3A Coach of the Year and Walker County Coach of the Year. He was an assistant coach at the University of Tennessee at Martin and Thompson High School. He was also Head Coach at Thompson High School. Coach Maner earned his B.S. and M.S. in Physical Education from Livingston University. He is married to the former Patsy Yelverton of Tuscaloosa and they have one child, Peyton.
Coach George Pugh This is Coach Pugh’s second year with the Spain Park coaching staff. He played tight end at the University of Alabama from 1972-75. Since 1976, Coach Pugh has coached at multiple high schools and colleges. He has served as an assistant coach or wide receivers coach at Columbus High School (GA), Selma High School, Luverne High School, Meadowcreek High School (GA), Chattanooga, New Mexico, Pittsburgh, UAB, Arkansas, Houston, and Georgia State. He was Head Coach at Columbus High School and Alabama A&M (89-91), where he won two SIAC Championships. From 2016-19, Coach Pugh served as Director of Player Personnel at the University of Memphis. Coach Pugh joined the SPHS coaching staff in the summer of 2019.

VARSITY COACHING STAFF Coach Marty Rozell OFFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Before coming to Spain Park, Coach Rozell was Assistant Coach at Hewitt-Trussville High School from 1992-2001, serving as the Offensive Coordinator from 1999-2001. In 2002 and 2003, Rozel served as Quarterbacks coach and Play Caller for two State Championship teams at Hoover High School. In 2004, Rozell once again took the position of Offensive Coordinator at Hewitt-Trussville High School and remained in that position until 2006. In 2006, he became the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at Mountain Brook High School. During his eight years at Mountain Brook, he helped lead the Spartans to four quarterfinal appearnaces and one semifinal appearance. In 2010, the Alabama Football Coaches Association named Coach Rozell “Assistant Coach of the Year”. He is married to Tonya, and they have three children, - George, Ben, and Emma
Coach Darrius Taylor LINEBACKERS
Coach Taylor begins his fourth year at Spain Park. He has coached both Linebackers and Defensive Line. Coach Taylor attended Cherokee High School. After, he attended the University of Alabama at Birmingham where he played 4 years at linebacker and earned a B.S. in History. After college, Coach Taylor went on to coach football and track at Gateway High School in Kissimmee, FL for two years (200507). Coach Taylor then entered the business world for two years and later returned to Gateway High School in 2009 as the Defensive Backs Coach. In 2011, he went on to coach running backs at St. Cloud High School (FL). In 2012, he coached the defensive line at Liberty High School in Kissimmee, FL. In 2013, he returned to Gateway High School as the Defensive Coordinator and Linebackers Coach. Coach Taylor is married to Milagros Taylor and they have three children: Jovan (13), Kian (12), and Kaelen (12).

VARSITY COACHING STAFF Coach Matt Thompson DEFENSIVE COORDINATOR
Coach Thompson begins his tenth year at Spain Park and his fourth year serving as Defensive Coordinator. Prior to that, he served as Offensive Coordinator in 2013-2015 helping Spain Park to a 2014 7A State Runner-Up finish. In 2009-2010 he served as Offensive Coordinator at Oxford High School and Special Teams/Passing Coordinator from 2005-2008 and Head Wrestling Coach from 2005-2011. In 2004, Coach Thompson was Offensive Coordinator at Robert E. Lee High School. In 2003, he coached wide receivers and was Head Wrestling Coach at Saint James School. Coach Thompson began his coaching career at his alma mater, Robert E. Lee High School. He was there from 1998-2002 and was also Head Wrestling Coach. He served as Special Teams Coordinator in 2001-2002 and Offensive Coordinator in 2000. In 1999, he coached running backs and helped lead them to a 1999 6A State Runner-Up finish. From 1992-1998, he coached at Capitol Heights Jr High School where he coached football, wrestling, and track. Coach Thompson is from Montgomery, AL and is a 1991 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School and earned his B.S. in Physical Education from Auburn University at Montgomery and his Master’s in Educational Leadership from The University of Alabama at Birmingham. Coach Thompson and his wife Betsy have three children - Mary Grace (19), John Robert (16), and James David (10).
Coach Ryan Thompson WIDE RECEIVERS
Coach Ryan Thompson begins his eighth year as Receivers Coach and Wrestling coach at Spain Park. He was raised in Montgomery and is a 1996 graduate of Robert E. Lee High School. Coach Thompson served as Receivers Coach and Head Wrestling Coach at Opelika High School from 20032012. In 2012, he was Receivers Coach at Gulf Shores High School. Coach Thompson earned his B.S. in Social Science from Auburn University at Montgomery and his M.S. in Administration from UAB. Coach Thompson and his wife, Nicole, have three children - Kate (18), Macie (15), and Klara (12).

Freshman COACHING STAFF Coach Phillip Pate
HEAD FRESHMAN FOOTBALL COACH This is Coach Pate’s thirteenth year of coaching and teaching at Spain Park. After graduation from Erwin High School in 1999, Coach Pate attended Auburn University where he earned a B.S. in History in 2003. He played football for the Auburn Tigers and was a two-year letterman. Previously, he coached at Hewitt-Trussville High School, Douglas High School, Hazel Green High School, and Arab High School. Coach Pate is married to Katy and they have two children - Sam and Camille.

FRESHMAN OFFENSIVE LINE COACH
The 2020 season begins Coach Spencer’s seventeenth year at Spain Park and twentieth year coaching. He previously coached at Prattville High School for four years. Coach Spencer is also the Assistant Varsity Baseball Coach for the Jaguars. Coach Spencer is an Auburn University graduate and hails from Billingsley, Alabama. He and his wife, Ashley, have three children - Clay, Addison, and Colt.

SPORTS MEDICINE Staff Sara Lynch
HEAD ATHLETIC TRAINER Sara Lynch enters her fifth year at Spain Park and second year as Head Athletic Trainer. She graduated from Auburn University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science. Sara obtained her Masters in Athletic Training from Texas A&M University in 2016. Sara grew up in Talladega, Alabama and currently resides in Homewood with her furbaby, Remi.

ATHLETIC TRAINER Born and raised in Syracuse, NY, I moved to Alabama in 2001 to work for Healthsouth as a Certified Athletic Trainer. I am starting my 10th year with Hoover CIty Schools and I teach in the Health Science Academy at the Riverchase Career Connections Center. I am an avid runner, a husband, and father of two.
Jamie McQueen
ASSISTANT ATHLETIC TRAINER Jamie McQueen is entering her second year as an assistant athletic trainer here at Spain Park High School. Jamie went to Huntingdon College and obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science and a minor in Psychology while playing softball for the Hawks. She then went on to earn her Masters in Athletic Training degree from Samford University. Jamie is a native of the Birmingham area, attending Oak Mountain during her early years, and currently resides in McCalla with her husband, Justin.

TEAM PHYSICIANS Dr. Michael K. Ryan TEAM PHYSICIAN
Michael K. Ryan, MD, is an orthopaedic surgeon, specializing in sports medicine surgery, hip preservation surgery (including hip arthroscopy for treatment of hip impingement and labral tears, treatment of hip dysplasia, and other joint preserving surgeries for adolescents and adults), as well as knee and hip replacements. Dr. Ryan is a graduate of Notre Dame and the University of Georgetown School of Medicine. He completed his residency at New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases and then completed a sports medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute in Birmingham.
Dr. Emily Bell Casey TEAM PHYSICIAN
Dr. Emily Bell Casey is a Primary Care Sports Medicine specialist with an interest in treating gymnastic and dance injuries. She is a graduate of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine and completed her Internal Medicine Residency at Baptist Health Centers in Birmingham, follwed by a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship at the American Sports Medicine Institute. Dr. Casey has been the team physician for several local colleges.

VOICE OF THE JAGS Rick Pirkle
PUBLIC ADDRESS ANNOUNCER Rick Pirkle begins his 16th year as a Public Address Announcer. He enters his 6th season as “The Voice of Jags”. Rick is currently the Public Address Announcer for Samford University Men’s and Women’s Basketball programs. He is also the Public Address Announcer for Birmingham’s USL Pro Soccer team, Birmingham Legion FC. He does PA for annual college basketball events including Mike Slive Invitational, Chick-fila-A Classic, Rocket City Classic, Gulf South basketball conference tournament and multiple AHSAA state championship events. Rick is certified by the National Association of Sports Public Address Announcers and an active member of the NASPAA. He earned his BS in Marketing from Jacksonville State University. He is employed with Lundbeck Pharmaceuticals as a Senior Account Sales Manager. He and his wife, DeeAnn, have two children. Riley will be a sophomore at The University of Alabama and Lily, a junior at Spain Park.

HEAD COACH AND VARSITY CHEER COACH Coach Halla begins her tenth year with the Spain Park Cheer program. She has coached for over 30 years at the high school and collegiate level. Coach Halla has coached award-winning squads in Alabama, Tennessee, and Texas. She was the Spirit Coordinator at UAB for 12 years, leading the squads to consistently finish in the top 10 nationally. Coach Halla holds an undergrad degree from the University of Montevallo in business and Masters of Secondary Education from Samford University. She teaches 10th grade English and is married to Clay Halla.
Abigail Hawkins JV CHEER COACH
Abigail Hawkins begins her first year coaching for Spain Park JV Cheer. This is also her first year teaching English 9 at Spain Park High School. She received her bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education English from Samford University and is in the process of earning her Master’s degree in High School Education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Hawkins cheered competitively for 10 years in her hometown in Kentucky prior to coaching. She is excited to begin her coaching and teaching career while being a part of the Spain Park community.
Maryann Pledger FRESHMAN CHEER COACH
Maryann Pledger is beginning her second year at Spain Park High School. She has coached for over six years at the secondary level. Coach Pledger holds a bachelor’s degree in Secondary Education in Social Sciences, Master’s degree in English as a Second Language and Instructional Leadership, and an Educational Specialist degree in Teacher Leadership from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. While at UAB, she was a part of the All-Girl Cheerleading team 2000-2002. She is married to John Pledger and is the mother to Ayden, Alec, Antoinette, Adelaide, and Anderson. She teaches English as a second language at Spain Park.
