WHERE IS MATTHEWS? Matthews is located in the southeastern corner of Mecklenburg County, directly bordering the city of Charlotte. Nestled just off U.S. Hwy. 74 (Independence Boulevard), Matthews occupies a prime position along one of the region's most historically significant travel corridors. The town is flanked by Union County to the east and sits roughly 12 miles from Uptown Charlotte. Its geography is characterized by gently rolling Piedmont terrain, with Indian Trail and Stallings to the south and east, and the communities of Mint Hill and Stallings forming its outer boundaries. The town's location along U.S. Hwy. 74 has long made it a natural gateway between Charlotte and the communities of eastern Mecklenburg and western Union counties. State Hwy. 51 also passes through the heart of Matthews, serving as another north–south spine that links the town to South Charlotte neighborhoods like Ballantyne and the SouthPark district. Interstate access is equally convenient for Matthews residents. I- 485, the Charlotte outer loop, runs along the town's northern and western edges, providing a seamless connection to virtually every major corridor in the metro area, including I-77, I-85, and I-277. The proximity to I-485 has been a significant factor in Matthews' growth, as it allows people to enjoy a quieter, small-town atmosphere while remaining tethered to the full economic and employment landscape of one of the South's largest cities. For those who prefer alternatives to driving, Matthews is also served by CATS (Charlotte Area Transit System) bus routes, which connect the town to broader transit lines throughout the metro. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, one of the busiest in the Southeast, is approximately 30 away via I-485 and I-85, making air travel accessible without the congestion of navigating through the urban core. Taken together, Matthews' location and transportation network make it one of the more strategically well-connected suburban towns in the Charlotte region.

MATTHEWS TRAIN DEPOT & CABOOSE Built in the late 1880s, the Train Depot served passengers until 1958 and stayed in use until 1966. It sat empty for years until the Town of Matthews bought and moved it to the Town Green in 1999. MATTHEWS HERITAGE MUSEUM Built in 1890 by Edward Solomon Reid, a prominent Matthews businessman, the Reid House is one of the few remaining Victorian Queen Annestyle homes in the region. Now owned and maintained by the Matthews Historical Foundation and available to rent for weddings, parties, and other special occasions.
Step back in time at the Matthews Heritage Museum, an educational and interactive experience housed in the historic Massey-Clark House, built in 1879. Explore exhibits like a country doctor’s office, a local drugstore, an old-fashioned bank, and discover how the railroad helped shape the town’s growth. MATTHEWS COMMUNITY CENTER The Matthews Community Center, located in the heart of downtown Matthews, NC, is a historic landmark and vibrant hub for arts, culture, and community life. Originally built in 1907 as the town’s first public school, the building now hosts a wide range of programs for all ages, including art, dance, music, and wellness classes. Features include commemorative brick pavers, granite war monuments, and flags representing all branches of the military, including a POW/MIA flag. Display panels throughout the memorial narrate the history of major U.S. conflicts—from World War I to the Global War on Terrorism—offering visitors a place for reflection and remembrance.
