Local Business Spotlight: Searles Carpets: Horsefair, Boroughbridge We spoke to owner Martin Searle about Searles Carpets. “Searles Carpets was founded and established in 1970 in Ilkley, West Yorkshire by my parents, Leslie and Mable Searle. I joined the family business in 1974, aged just 17 and worked hard to learn the trade. Today, Searles of Ilkley is run by my brother Carl Searle, whilst my wife and I opened Searles of Boroughbridge in May 2009. My life has been spent working with carpets and so that is why we know our carpets when it comes to quality and value, we give a personel touch and guide our customers with patience and honesty. We fully understand that buying carpets is not an everyday event and that customers need reassurance when making their decision. We are still a tight knit family business, and the fitters we take on are trained to fit like we do. We remove and adjust your doors if needed free of charge and we remove old carpet and reduce it in size and put it in your bin at no cost. We also hoover when finished for free. New Owners at The Buck Inn We visited The Buck Inn at Thornton Watlass and had a chat with new owners Victoria and Tony Jowett to find out their plans for this lovely country pub. Victoria explains, “I have worked in hospitality since leaving school, and in fact worked in hotels from the age of 8, when my parents bought their first hotel. Tony is making a radical lifestyle change, having worked in IT since he left school. We have been made very welcome by the residents of Thornton Watlass and the surrounding villages, and plan to give The Buck Inn a new lease of life, freshening and brightening it up, whilst retaining the character of this charming

village pub. We have kept all the existing staff, and serve food every day – lunches from 12 – 2pm (Mon - Sat) and 12 – 3pm (Sun) and dinner 6 – 9pm (Mon Sat) and 6 – 8.30pm (Sun). Outdoor Kitchen & Fireplace The brief was to bring the inside out by creating a unique area for entertaining outdoors. We used high quality materials to form a stylish, natural and functional space.

Wildlife Pond & Stream Tranquility was our main goal here. Our customer was able to arrive home and let the stress of every day life melt away in this serene aquatic wonderland.

Moon Pond Attracting wildlife was key in this project. Blue sandstone traces outward rays and native planting trails over the stone waterwall, in turn acting as a hub for nature.

the Garden Take a moment this summer to enjoy the myriad beauty of the flowers around you. Each bloom is full of delight and can soften the hardest heart. Garden health is achieved by creating a diverse range of organisms within the garden ecosystem. This is called biodiversity. A major component of your ecosystem is insect life. Many insects will either directly or indirectly form relationships with nectar producing plants and providing year round nectar sources will increase biodiversity of both plant and insect species. Therefore, try to choose both native and exotic plants that will expand the flowering season in your area and help nature thrive around you.

Jennyruth Workshops continues to go from strength to strength Jennyruth Workshops has come on a long way since it was officially opened by the Countess of Wessex in June 2004. Numbers of workers have increased from an initial 4 to 23 today, with many others who have benefited from the Jennyruth Workshops experience. The current product range, especially with bespoke work, has changed and grown beyond recognition as the skills of the workers have developed to meet these ever increasing demands for quality and originality. Many more of their products are being used to enhance local businesses and an enjoyable challenge is to walk through Ripon and spot Jennyruth Workshops’ products on the streets and in shops and businesses. “The excitement we see is that these demands for ever more specialist products continue to grow as does the ability of our workers to deliver. The personal development of each and every worker by fellow workers, staff and volunteers is one of the many joys of working with Jennyruth Workshops” Richard, Jennyruth Workshops CEO. As the dust settles on the numerous 10th year celebrations, Jennyruth Workshops are focusing on the next decade and the opportunities if offers for Jennyruth to expand the excellent work it does with adults with learning disabilities. Grand OldWesleyan Lady hopes for new lease of Life After years of standing empty, the former Coltsgate Chapel could once again become an active part of the local community. Plans will shortly be put forward to the Harrogate Planning Service to convert the ground floor into offices and to create a performing arts centre on the first floor. The plans however rely on filling in the central atrium to both increase the useable floor area on the first floor and improve the energy efficiency of the office space below. However, this element of the scheme is not currently being supported by the Harrogate Planning Service in that they have refused listed building consent for the required work. Brought back from the brink of dereliction in the 1990s, this former Wesleyan Chapel was built in 1861 to replace an earlier building in which John Wesley himself preached in 1780. Barrie Price, Chairman of the Knoll Charitable Trust who is the owner of the Chapel says: “Eura Audit UK, Accountants and Business Advisors were looking for a new home for their Administration Department due to expansion. The Old Chapel on Coltsgate Hill, which had lain empty for many years seemed the ideal base for this purpose and was seen as a unique opportunity to end the building’s decades of disuse’’. We have engaged the services of a Heritage Consultant to ensure that the historic aspect of the building is preserved but at the same time, allow a modern office space to be created on the ground floor’’. “There were problems to overcome due to the nature of the interior and the open atrium aspect and it was essential to address the issue of this open space in order to be able to heat the building effectively. Without enclosing the atrium, the cost of heating would have been prohibitive and in addition both the Knoll Charitable Trust and Eura Audit UK are keen to reduce their own carbon footprint as much as possible. ’’ After much deliberation it was felt that the only way the Chapel could be brought back into effective use would be to enclose the central atrium by means of erecting a temporary ceiling. However, although this would allow the ground floor of the Chapel to be used, it did mean that use of the upper floor would be very limited. Following consultation with Ripon City Council and many local performing arts societies including the St Cecilia Orchestra and the Cathedral Concert Society, the Trust felt that if the ceiling could be made load-bearing then the upper floor could also be brought into effective use. The space would provide centrally located, low-cost facilities which could be adapted for any particular use and with its exceptional acoustic qualities, would provide an excellent rehearsal venue. With the ground floor being in use, it was felt unlikely that any additional heating would be required. Negotiations are now underway with the Planning Department of Harrogate Borough Council to find the best way forward in order to bring this building back to life and to preserve it for future generations. Maximus flora phobia true or just a tall story?
I’m not quite sure whether or not this is an officially registered phobia, but it seems to be one I see people suffering from frequently, so I thought I’d invent a Latin name for it. Maximus (large) flora (plants) phobia, creeps up on people slowly and its more common than you may think.
Maybe it’s not as serious as Botanophobia, the official phobia for people who have a genuine phobia of plants, but this pseudo-phobia is specifically related to selected members of the plant kingdom which grow taller than humans. I first discovered this was an issue when I planted a Rowan tree in my back garden at the age of 18. “How big will that grow?” my mum would ask me every spring, and each year I would reply with my standard answer “oh, not much bigger than that!” I’m not sure if it’s the fact that humans are generally control freaks and like to be able to reach the top of the plants (for maintenance I can only presume), if they feel over whelmed by the sheer size of a large tree, or perhaps are overly concerned about it growing too near to the house. There are ways to manage the growth of large trees and plants, such as pollarding (cutting off the branches to leave a trunk with a stumpy top),

or ‘balling up’ as it’s known in the industry (the act of trimming shrubs into spheres). In my opinion both are hard work, and generally leave ghastly looking results, with the exception of topiary of course! A much better idea is to select the correct tree or shrub in the first place. If you have a border just 2 feet wide, plant a small shrub such as a Hebe that only wants to grow to 2 feet wide. A little research should throw up some good varieties. Trees such as Amelanchier ‘Robin Hill’ and Acer griseum, or Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ are ideal. Try Prunus ‘Amanogawa’ for a flowering cherry, or Crataegus persimilis ‘Prunifolia’ which will grow in any location and any reasonable soil. If you’re a plant-nut like me, then it will probably frustrate you when people over trim plants to within an inch of their lives, or hack bits off trees, making them look like alien forms. If you live with a ‘sufferer’ and as a last resort, you could try introducing a pause in your words, as a good friend of mine did when asked how large the Eucalyptus in the front garden would grow …. “Oh, only four-t-five feet darling’. She actually got away with that one … until the following summer that is anyway! Enjoy your garden Lee

Yorkshire was delighted to have hosted the Grand Départ 2014, so we decided to have a look at some of the incredible figures attached to the World’s largest annual sporting event. • The Tour de France is the world’s largest annual sporting event • It starts at the end of June/beginning of July and lasts 3 weeks • The entire race covers approximately 3,500 kms • The Grand Départ is the opening of the race of the Tour de France • The Grand Départ is regularly held outside of France - in 2012 it was hosted by Belgium • A worldwide television audience of 3.5 billion people watch the Tour de France annually • Over 188 countries around the world broadcast the Tour de France • 121 different television channels across the world show the race every year • There are 4,700 hours of TV coverage annually • The last hour of every stage is broadcast live across western Europe • 2,000 journalists representing dozens of nationalities attend the Tour every year • 1,200 hotel rooms are reserved each night for the teams, staff, press and tour personnel • The Tour de France attracts 12 million spectators along the route in a typical year’s race • On average spectators travel 130km to see a stage of Le Tour • They spend on average six hours at a time at the roadside • 30% of those spectators are women • The last time the Tour visited England was in 2007 when it raced from London to Kent • 2 million people turned out over two days • It’s estimated it brought £88m to the south-east economy • It generated £35m worth of media coverage for the area • Yorkshire’s Brian Robinson was the first Brit to win stage of Tour de France in 1958 • Bradley Wiggins became the first British rider to win the Tour de France in 2012, this was followed up by a second British winner, Chris Froome, in 2013
