Raise Money this National Walking Month!

Spring is definitely in the air and it will soon be time to get outside and make the most of it!

Did you know that May is National Walking Month? So that will definitely be the time to dust off your walking boots and enjoy the countryside. And why not raise some money for Open Country at the same time?

The Nidderdale Charity Walk and Run is on Sunday 14th May and registration is now open. Click on the link for all the information you will need. There is a choice of different routes of varying lengths, so there’s something for everyone. You can also choose whether you want to walk or run.

The Rotary Club of Harrogate organise this event each year to raise money for local charities. We would be most grateful if you could use this opportunity to raise funds for Open Country, whilst

having a great day out in the fresh air. Open Country is a registered charity which supports our local disabled community to access the countryside by offering a wide range of different outdoor activities. It can be difficult for people living with disabilities to safely get out and about, but with our fully accessible minibuses and team of trained staff and volunteers we make sure that the outdoors can be enjoyed by everyone. Have a look on our website to find out more: www.opencountry.org.uk

Spring is in the air but watch out for seasonal danger

Keen gardeners will be looking forward to getting back outdoors but those with pets should think twice before adding certain plants and flowers to their garden.

Tulips can irritate your dog’s mouth and gastrointestinal tract. Normally they will only experience drooling, being sick and diarrhoea, but heart problems and difficulty breathing are also signs of tulip poisoning.Daffodils are poisonous to dogs if they eat the bulbs or flowers, or drink water from a vase with daffodils in. They can give your dog an upset stomach, make them vomit, and make them very sleepy and wobbly. A dog that’s been poisoned by daffodils might also have fits.

Bluebells, rhododendrons and the leaves and seeds of foxgloves are also toxic and can even be fatal so avoid planting in your garden and make sure dogs don’t consume any of these plants when out and about. Lilies are highly toxic to cats. Cats may want to eat them or if they brush past them in pollen they can easily absorb the poison when they groom.

Be aware at Easter that dogs will try and steal chocolate and eat it. While delicious, it is poisonous to them and cats too. It contains a chemical, theobromine, which is a bit like caffeine and is toxic to dogs and cats. As a general rule, the darker the chocolate, the higher the levels of theobromine become. It really is best to avoid your pets getting access to any sort of chocolate.

If you think your dog has been poisoned by anything, you need to act quickly and contact your vet as soon as your pet shows signs of being ill or behaving differently. If you have seen your dog eat something that they shouldn’t, don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Call your vet immediately and ask for their advice.

Further information about plants and foods poisonous to pets is available on the advice pages of the Blue Cross website.

A Passion for Peaches!

When we rented a house in the South of France one summer, there was a peach tree in the garden and the owner invited us to help ourselves. We have never eaten so many sweet, ripe peaches. Nothing in the supermarkets here has ever compared to those fat globes of nectar.

A few years ago, I discovered that it was possible to grow peaches in this country too, with a few caveats. In the far South it’s possible to grow them against a south, or south-west-facing wall. Further up the country we need the help of a conservatory or a large greenhouse. The reasons for this are threefold: peach trees tend to flower very early, around February, when the UK can still suffer sharp frosts in the mornings; they also develop fungal diseases if the weather is too cold and damp and finally, our short summers generally don’t give enough time for the fruits to ripen. But if you have that south-facing wall or conser-

vatory and would like to have a go at growing peaches (and who wouldn’t?) read on.

‘Peregrine’ is a white-fleshed peach quite wellsuited to the English climate (the above warnings notwithstanding) though generally best grown under cover. ‘Rochester’ is a very reliable yellow variety that gives good harvests of large fruits in August. It also has the advantage of being a late bloomer, making it less susceptible to frost damage. If space is limited, which it often is in a conservatory, choose a plant grafted on to dwarf rootstock. Peaches are best grown as a fan. Fasten horizontal wires to the wall at 30cm intervals to allow the stems to be tied in and spaced out evenly. The plant should be positioned about 25cm from the wall with branches sloped towards it, and if planted directly into the soil, this should be enriched with well-rotted manure or compost. If planted into a pot, make it as large and deep as the space will allow. When the flow-

ers appear, cover the plant with a light fleece at night to protect the blossom. Because of the lack of natural pollinators early in the year you can help things a long by using a long dry paintbrush to dust pollen from one flower to another. Then water the plant regularly and feed with tomato food through the summer to keep it healthy. Prune any branches that grow out away from the wall, and also remove any that overcrowd the framework. Cut some old and fruited lateral shoots out each year to allow new ones to take their place.

It might take a couple of years but with a little care and attention and a smidge of luck you will be able to reap the reward of harvesting your own peaches. There are few activities quite as delightful!

Happy gardening.
