From farm to table (via the Atlantic…) The Fish Hotel, sister of Dormy House in Broadway, has been turning heads since it opened in June last year. Now it’s set to turn a few more, with a brand new restaurant opening 1st April 2016. The Fish is the sister hotel of Dormy House in Broadway (both based on the 400-acre Farncombe Estate) and has become the go-to destination for those in search of outdoor adventure and a little bit of luxury without a hefty price tag. Now, with the opening of The Restaurant at The Fish on 1st April, it’s making a play for the hearts of foodies too, and looks set to secure a gourmet reputation to match that of its older sibling.
Going back to the 1970s, there are just three words you would utter: ‘surf ’n’ turf’. In an instant, the scent of Marierose and scampi batter would fill the air, sirloin steaks in varying shades of grey would enter the mind and, somewhere on the horizon, the prospect of a knickerbocker glory… Casual dining has, thankfully, come a long way since then, so it would take a brave restaurant to take on the task of reinventing surf ‘n’ turf for the 21st century. The Fish Hotel, however, has never been shy of a challenge. Given that the hotel is named for its location on Fish Hill it seems only right the new restaurant should serve seafood, but with farms producing some of the finest meat in the Britain on the hotel’s doorstep, limiting the menu to the ocean be criminal. So, surf ’n’ turf is back. Only this time, it’s a heck of a lot tastier. The menu is a pic ’n’ mix selection of the best of land and sea, allowing diners to team half a lobster with fillet steak, slow-cooked pork belly and scallops – or any other combination they like. And that’s just the start. With Sunday roasts served to the table in help-yourself family-style platters, set-menu feasts for group bookings and a retro afternoon tea, The Restaurant at The Fish is set to bring a unique new taste to the Cotswolds dining scene.

Visitors of old will know about the steep valley we sit in with the stream and mill pond; they will know the winding paths climbing up to the Cricket lawn with its tiny Pavilion and they will also know about the Herb garden sitting in the lea of the Church, BUT they may not know that this Herb garden is on the Sunday Telegraph’s 10 Best Herb gardens in England.
The six month project to transform www.cotswolds.com follows consultation with Cotswolds Tourism partners to create a new website that reinforces the area as one of the country’s leading tourist destinations. The emphasis on bold and beautiful imagery makes the website a great showcase of what the Cotswolds can offer visitors. It’s also easy to navigate and has a clean and contemporary look, all in a responsive format for optimum mobile browsing. Digital Marketing Manager for Cotswolds Tourism, Victoria Carman, who’s led the development of the new web-site said “The brand new website will be a fantastic promotional tool for the Cotswolds. It uses inspirational images and content,
as well as a great navigation to help our visitors find the information that they require quickly. Kilkeney or Kilkenny? The Inn is back on the map! Since taking over the Kilkeney back in August 2015, Kev and Jules Hanks have certainly been working hard to put this beautiful old country dining Inn back on the map. They have refurbished the whole pub; there are new floors everywhere, rustic, reclaimed boarded walls, eyecatching industrial light fittings and of course a good lick of paint all-round. Five star service from charity café A social enterprise café is going from strength to strength after picking up glowing reviews from customers. The cafe, operated by the Yellow Submarine charity in the Windrush Leisure Centre, has earned a string of five star reviews on TripAdvisor, as well as attracting a growing number of regular customers. One reviewer said: “Love this place and all that it stands for. Great ethos, friendly service, delicious food and excellent prices. Another added: “Great food and great drinks … do yourself and your community a favour!” The success of the venture just six months after it was officially opened by David Cameron, Prime Minister and Witney MP, has delighted everyone involved with the venture, not least the young people with learning disabilities who operate it. Ian Rigsby, 27, who has worked as an apprentice at the café since last September, said: “I used to have a job as a cleaner but this is much better as I feel my confidence has really grown. “I really enjoy working here - the best part is meeting customers and I would love to carry that on into a full-time job.” Yellow Submarine employs seven apprentices and four trainees in Witney and at its sister café in Oxford with local apprentices attending a customer service course at Abingdon and Witney College. Paul Stanton Humphreys, Head of Enterprises at Yellow Submarine, said: “We are delighted with our success in Witney and the café will continue to grow. “It is not just about the feedback we are receiving on TripAdvisor and social media, customers are coming back time after time and telling us about the brilliant service and how good the café looks.” The project is run in conjunction with West Oxfordshire District Council which provided more than £30k towards renovations and GLL, the leisure contractor which manages the centre on the Council’s behalf. Cllr James Mills, the District Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure and Health, said: “It is fantastic to see how the café is thriving in such a short space of time. “I am sure it will go from strength to strength with people enjoying great food and drink in the knowledge they are supporting a wonderful cause.”

Parish Council Notes Bourton Parish Council Meeting 3rd February 2016
Annual Parish Meeting: A last reminder to residents that this year’s meeting will be held on Wednesday 30th March in the main Function Room at the Community Centre between 7pm and 9pm, with drinks and nibbles. We do hope residents will come along to provide feedback, put forward suggestions or just have a chat. Your County and Ward Councillors will also be in attendance to provide more information about government grant cuts in 2016-17 and how this is likely to impact on the delivery of services by GCC and CDC throughout the Cotswolds.
What Career Should I Choose? Arguably the first most difficult decision that a youngster is going to make in life is choosing which subjects to study for his or her GCSE’s. Parents and guardians frequently ask me why Y9 children have to make such important decisions at such an early time in life. Unfortunately the education system has allowed this system of choice to carry on for decades instead of tackling the problem head on. Therefore we are left with what may be challenging or even irreversible decisions to make regarding career paths. There are of course a number of software programmes that allow one to answer a series of questions and out pops a computerised answer that one is best suited to become an engineer, doctor, veterinary surgeon, nurse, linguist, teacher, painter, welder, driver, electrician etc.
First Responder Service: The Council has been asked to gauge local interest or support for a Community First Responder service being established in Bourton. Volunteers are trained to attend emergency calls received by the ambulance service and provide care until the ambulance/paramedics arrive. The schemes operate as a community partnership between St John Ambulance and local ambulance service trusts; having someone in the community who has been trained in first aid and can reach the patient quickly can make a vital difference. Any residents who may be interested in volunteering are asked to contact the Council office.
On top of this the youngster is reminded that s/he must be prepared in life to perhaps have several career changes. Should any youngster reading this be worried about this having an adverse effect on one’s future do not worry; I can vouch that it is possible to travel along a variety of successful career paths – in my case from the coal mines to Head of Science via the railways and the Army.
Village Green: The main grassed area has been fenced off awaiting a programme of treatment; whilst this is not ideal, it’s hoped this will achieve a more resilient surface throughout the summer, and help reduce wear. The area of cobbled paving to the south of the river, adjacent to Riverside Walk, will be extended between Victoria and Sherborne St subject to developer assistance with works/costs. The two trees outside the Riverside Café, currently in poor condition, will be replaced.
My advice to students of all ages is to choose the subjects that they feel happiest with. Employers are not necessarily looking for the brightest student with a string of A* or Level 9’s to their name. They will be looking for a person who can show that they have the ability to adapt in their business environment by having the potential to make a positive contribution to the company’s success.
Devt to rear of Roman Way: A new planning application will be submitted by Bloor Homes for all development in excess of the first 81 homes; the application will seek to increase the total number of dwellings on-site in order to accommodate greater numbers of smaller units in the later phases of construction. Areas of Open Space will not be affected by the proposed changes. Residents are encouraged to let the Council have their views when this information is to hand. Coach Parking: By now, many residents and local businesses are likely to be aware that an agreement was reached shortly before the deadline of 31st January. This agreement will transfer legal responsibility for administration of coach parking at Station Rd car park to CDC, who will also extend and improve the acoustic wall on the boundary. The Parish Council has agreed to contribute £1k pa towards costs during the initial 5 year lease, and seek contributions from local traders to offset this expenditure. At the time of writing, all proposals were subject to ratification by CDC Cabinet members. Whilst it was not possible to release detailed information throughout negotiations, the Council trusts that the eventual agreement will resolve the recent dispute to all parties’ satisfaction. “Men in Sheds”: This activity has now begun – interested residents are encouraged to contact the Council office for further details regarding the local coordinator. ............................................................................................................................... Work experience is of great importance and will give one the insight to what your hoped for career entails. It is not always the photogenic scenario that is often portrayed in advertisements and I have come across a number of students who have been disappointed with their experience in a work placement.
How to Write a CV While it’s tempting to dust off your last CV and just add an extra couple of lines for your current job, sometimes it’s best to start from scratch. There’s a wealth of advice on CV writing to be found on the internet, but to get you started, here are a few of our top tips: Personalise it. Ideally, amend your CV for each job application, making sure you reference any skills that were mentioned in the job description. Keep it brief. There’s no need to detail every job you’ve had if they’re not relevant to the position you’re applying for. Avoid repetition. If you’ve had a similar job role at several companies, there’s no need to

keep repeating the same skills. Try to focus on added responsibilities for each role, to show career progression. Include a link to your LinkedIn profile, but only if it’s up to date. Present it well. Use a clear font, make sure everything lines up well, and separate sections with sub-headers. Search online for a template to make it easier. Check for grammar and spelling mistakes, and ask a friend to look over it for you. Don’t forget the cover letter! The cover letter gives you the chance to really highlight why your skills and experience are relevant to a particular job. Good luck! By Kate Duggan
Yes there will be other attributes that they require and the candidate may not have all of them but a good company will provide the required training and guidance for the successful applicant. A good example of this is in teaching where a school will put a newly qualified teacher under the guidance of an experienced senior teacher who will act as a mentor. So a career choice in the early part of life has to have a degree of flexibility should circumstances change. Guidance in making a decision: • Do not be afraid of changing your mind • Seek advice from parents and more important people in the profession that you wish to follow. • Be prepared for a long journey to master the skills required. • Never give in to the qualification requirements of the profession. You have more resilience and energy than you think you do, so you can attain your objectives. • Money should not be the only criteria of choosing a profession. I know a successful lawyer who gave up her career because she found dealing with other peoples’ problems so depressing. • Have an alternative plan or route just in case. Ceres the closest Dwarf Planet to the Sun Ceres is located in the asteroid belt, between the planets of Mars and Jupiter. It is 950 km diameter and was discovered in 1801 by Giuseppe Piazzi who preferred to call in a planetoid. However; Sir William Herschel referred to Ceres as an asteroid and won the argument of the naming of the asteroid belt. Ceres was upgraded from asteroid to Dwarf Planet alongside Pluto in 2006. The Dawn spacecraft has taken some stunning photographs of Ceres. Prior to reaching Ceres, Dawn visited the asteroid Vesta. The objective of the mission is to help scientists understand the thermal history and the role of water in the evolution of asteroids and possibly establish if meteorites found on Earth come from these bodies.

New Planet Discovered – The majority of our readers will be aware of the theoretical discovery of a 9th planet in our Solar System, but bear in mind that the planet referred to as Planet 9 has yet to be located. It is believed to be 10 times the mass of Earth and at a distance between 215 and 1,075 Astronomical Units from the Sun (remember 1AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun). To give one an idea of the scale of our Solar System, Pluto is 40AU from the Sun. The new planet would take between 10,000 and 20,000 years to orbit the Sun. It is estimated that it may be as long as 7 years before the theoretical discovery is confirmed.

Mother’s Day? “Why do we even need Mother’s Day?” My 14-year-old daughter grumped as I suggested she might like to put some consideration into a card and flowers. Well Gracie, let me enlighten you... The full time job - No holiday. No time off for good behaviour. 24 hours, 365 days per year and no pay. If my boss at work tried to impose these conditions as the terms of my contract I’d have grounds to take him to court. The housework - It may surprise you Gracie to know that the house does not clean and tidy itself. Clothing does not wash, iron and sort itself into drawers. There isn’t an army of cleaning fairies who pop out at night to dust and run the vacuum cleaner over the carpet. It is actually your Mum. Ok some of it is me, and you will do the odd chore (generally reluctantly) but mostly, let’s be honest here, it’s mum. The food – Meal-planning, shopping, cooking. It’s just done, sorted, no problems. I realise you and your brother clear the table and stack the dishwasher, mostly while grumbling about slave labour and the general unfairness of life, but I’m betting you’d miss the meals if they suddenly stopped The taxi – How often do you use your mum as a fareless taxi-service? What if she made you walk, catch a bus or cycle to your friends’ houses. What if she starting charging you? The organiser – Where are you supposed to be at 9.30am this Saturday? Or 4pm on Tuesday? Bet mum knows! The therapist – That boy you like but who broke your heart? Mum will offer hugs and a shoulder to cry on. That nasty teacher who was making your life a misery? Who spoke to her on your behalf? Which subjects should you take at school? Should you choose hockey practice or clarinet lessons? Mum will advise. You may not like the advice or take it, but you know she cares. The banker - That school trip you forgot to tell us about? The night out at the cinema with friends you simply must attend? The new shoes you absolutely have to buy? Who stumps up for all this stuff? That’s right, your mum. So a card, a handwritten note, a hug, a kiss and a heartfelt ‘Thank you mum’ will go a long way toward making her feel special, and yes it does seem ridiculous we have to have a day set aside for it but that’s the point! In our busy lives for one day we stop, think and appreciate everything she does. So that Gracie darling is why we have Mother’s Day! By Tom Hancock

The first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hard-prune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Shrub roses don’t need such radical treatment but would benefit from losing a third of their old, thick, woody stems. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.

Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead.
I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. There are loads of varieties in the garden centres right now. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch / 20cm pot and five fit into a ten inch / 25cm pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. The bulb tips should be a couple of inches below the compost. Keep in a sheltered spot and water when the surface of the compost looks dry. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. When the blooms fade, cut the
stems down and place in a sheltered spot. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. There are a plethora of colours and scents available, so there is a lily for everyone. Try them. I guarantee you’ll be as in love with lilies as I am. By Rachel Leverton

Grants for central heating systems now available Hundreds of households in Cotswold District that do not currently have central heating may be eligible for a grant of up to £4,000 to have a new system installed. Cotswold District Council, along with the other six local authorities in the county and South Gloucestershire, has been awarded a share of £25 million government funding to help residents to keep their houses warm and lower their energy bills. Cllr Sue Coakley, the Cabinet Member for Health, Environment and Communities at Cotswold District Council, said: “Thanks to these grants, householders struggling to pay for expensive forms of heating could switch to new efficient gas central heating

systems provided they meet the qualifying criteria. This funding should help lower bills and potentially lift people out of fuel poverty. I should stress that these are grants rather than loans so they do not have to be paid back – and that makes such a big difference. ” The scheme, run by Warm and Well, is predominantly aimed at properties that are currently heated by costly ‘on peak’ electric systems, although the replacement of other forms of heating systems will also be considered. The aim is to replace these with modern energy efficient condensing boilers, which could save a household on average £250 a year, based on a family in a three bed semidetached house.
Anyone considering installing a central heating system should also ensure that their home is insulated. Householders may be entitled to a grant for cavity wall and loft insulation through the Warm and Well scheme, which can save £160 per year on fuel bills. All grants are subject to a survey and availability. BT plans to abandon landlines by 2025... Will your business be ready?
The digital revolution will continue apace over the next decade, with BT looking to retire the traditional telephone network in favour of upgrading all customers to Internet-based voice calling. The move is unlikely to cause problems for the majority of domestic customers, as the current broadband infrastructure can be used to deliver Internet calls, but thousands of UK businesses need to prepare for the termination of ISDN lines.
ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) has been the standard platform for digital communications for almost 30 years, but BT argues that moving away from this legacy framework will allow for greater investment in superfast internet and higher quality services. Ofcom is yet to greenlight the proposals, but the regulator is expected to agree with industry recommendations. SIP Trunking is a great alternative to ISDN, offering a range of business benefits and associated cost savings. Adoption of SIP (Session Internet Protocol) has been slower in the UK than in some European countries, but local firms have been urged to start thinking about the future. Some business owners may be concerned about the potential cost of overhauling their telecomms system, but most SIP Trunk solutions are compatible with existing PBX (Private Branch Exchange) hardware. Moreover, leasing SIP trunks is considerably cheaper than ISDN line rental, with free internal calls and call-forwarding. Additionally, many SIP providers also offer free calls to UK landlines and mobiles. Multi-site companies can centralise all communications, removing the need for individual PBX’s at each office, but the real beauty of SIP lies in its scalability; lines can be added or removed instantaneously, efficiently adapting to business needs, and numbers can be kept when moving premises. Remote working is also aided as mobile phones can connect to the network, ensuring that staff remain contactable on their office number. SIP also allows for non-geographic dialling codes, giving local businesses more of a nationwide presence. Alternatively, companies based in Gloucestershire could choose to run London, Manchester or Bristol numbers, all routed to the same location. While 2025 may sound a long way off, the reality is that the mass-migration from ISDN needs to start soon.
