Knee Replacement Surgery Procedure

Page 1

Knee Replacement Surgery Procedure Total knee replacement (total knee arthroplasty) surgery replaces natural knee joint components with artificial (prosthetic) components. A big operation (major surgery) typically includes opening the body, significant tissue trauma, a greater risk of infection, and a lengthier recovery time. Most major surgical procedures will leave a big scar.

A total knee replacement is a significant procedure that may be required when alternative therapies (weight loss, exercise and physical therapy, drugs, injections, and bracing) have failed to alleviate the pain, which must be severe and disabling.

Knee replacement surgery is often performed: • To reduce the pain associated with severe arthritis • To restore the functionality of an arthritic knee
