Similar formal features of traditional Southeast Asian clothing have also been added to the Singapore Airlines uniform, which is the product of the historical context that Malaysian airlines and Singapore Airlines have operated individually from 1972 since Malaysia Airlines was started in 1937 ('Rise of an Airline' 2014). Singapore Girl was created in 1972 when Pierre Balmain, French designer of haute couture, was hired to create and redesign the "Sarong Kebaya" as part of the cabin crew's uniform. Since then, the uniform has received worldwide recognition as part of Singapore Airline's recognizable signature branding. And to them, there is a sense! Blue colors are for flight stewardesses, green for leading stewardesses, red for chief stewardesses, and purple for in-flight supervisors.
