PRESIDENT’S REPORT Welcome to the first edition for 2021 of the Droughtmaster Australia magazine.

2021 promises to be a great year for our members and for those coming into the breed.

We start 2021 with a range of opportunities before us. Following some of the most challenging years from an environmental point of view for agriculture in Australia, we’ve now got a much lower herd, which is rebuilding. At the same time, global demand for protein, even with all the disruption, is at unprecedented levels. This is reflected in the current Eastern Young Cattle Indicator which, at time of writing, is nearly 300c/ kg higher than the same time last year!

It is a prime opportunity to point to the Droughtmaster’s traits and benefits that give them a reputation as a wonderful, fertile all rounder to help rebuild herds and meet the world’s protein needs.

Domestically, you would have seen the “Droughtmaster Beef ” feaures following the launch of “Our Story” in late 2020. The message of “Australia, it’s time to ask for Droughtmaster Beef ” is starting to kick in, with a number of pubs and clubs adding Droughtmaster to the menu. I encourage you to proudly ask for Droughtmaster beef and share your stories with us.

With respect to the coming year of events, the calendar is full, with the main event for the year ahead being Beef 2021, from 2 to 8 May.

The Society has a strong and committed group of volunteers and staff working to showcase Droughtmaster cattle to ensure the greatest exposure for the breed and its adaptability through this event. A number of functions and events are planned for the Droughtmaster Precinct during Beef 2021, with a further aim for the precinct being that it be a place to meet, catch up, and relax. We hope to see you there.

GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT Happy New Year to everyone! I hope many of you were fortunate enough to receive some much-needed rain over the Christmas break.

Since my last update in the December edition of the magazine, I would like to inform you that we had a very successful launch in November 2020 of our new promotional video, “Our Story”. We have received some very positive feedback following the launch and the video can now be viewed on our website.

As most of you are aware, during 2020 we have expended a significant amount of time on improving our promotional activity and brand awareness which has included rebranding, a new website, targeted marketing campaigns, production of a promotional video, and strategic partnerships; and we are now also making some substantial changes to our packs for membership enquiries and new membership. Off the back of this, it is pleasing to see the growth in new members trending upwards and membership resignations trending downwards. This is depicted in the charts below which provides a snapshot over the past five years and up until January of this year.

I would also like to inform you that in December last year, the Droughtmaster Australia office had a twoday session which was facilitated by Rowan Wallace to do a deep-dive into the business and understand where the bottlenecks are and how we can become more efficient and productive as a team. A long list of issues and actions resulted from this session and over the course of the next 12 months there will be a big focus on implementing the internal improvements required to service our members.

NSW Droughtmaster breeder Tim Lloyd says he can’t imagine ever not attending Beef Australia, as the triennial event continues to prove its worth to his business.

The Inverell studmaster says he never once paused his preparations for Beef Australia 21, even as clouds

of uncertainty swirled around the event for most of 2020 while health authorities worked to gain control of the coronavirus pandemic.

And that’s good news, he says, not just for business and profile, but for the ongoing quest to progress genetic improvement among the Australian stud breeding herd.

With those clouds lifting late last year on the back of Beef Australia announcing that a COVID-safe event would proceed as scheduled in 2021, it means breeders like Mr Lloyd can confidently leverage sales and promotional activity off the opportunities the week in Rockhampton affords.

“As a breeder you need that three-year cycle to focus your breeding direction, which involves selecting and mating in year one, producing a calf in year two and then growing out with a view to breeding on or selling depending on the outcome, the season and the market,” Mr Lloyd said.

“An event like Beef gives you the opportunity to see what other studs are doing, measuring that against your own animals and then using the information you find useful or relevant to your own operation and putting it into play for the next three-year cycle.

“From that respect alone, the threeyear cycle of Beef is just superb and, in my opinion, has undoubtedly played a role in the ongoing success of the Australian beef industry in the last 30 years or so.

“It’s a genuine industry event, not a show, and that’s the difference it makes.”

As the principal of Heitiki stud at Delungra, NSW near Inverell, this year will mark Mr Lloyd’s ninth Beef Australia.

Joining him again will be his wife Emma and two teenage sons, as well as his father and stud founder John Lloyd, who turned 90 in January.

Does the Droughtmaster breed have a natural advantage when it comes to the Commercial Cattle Championships at Beef?

IT’S A question worthy of serious consideration, given Droughtmaster cattle have been responsible for creating more winners than any other breed since the first competition in 1988.

Central Queensland Droughtmaster breeder Ken McKenzie and family have won all but three of the championships held this century, five titles since 2003, with 2009 the only gap in an otherwise unrivalled run over 18 years.

But the almost unbroken chain of championships – arguably the most highly prized and coveted for commercial cattle producers in the country – is no great secret, according to the decorated studmaster and beef producer.

“It’s the feed conversion of the Droughtmaster in hot and humid climates that gives it the edge in my opinion,” he said.

“When other breeds are looking for a spell as the temperature and humidity climbs the Droughtmaster

Droughtmaster’s record run While stud honours among bulls at Beef have been shared roughly between bos Taurus and bos Indicus types, and dominated

by European breeds among the females, Droughtmaster cattle have maintained an almost iron-grip on the commercial championships, judged at the Gracemere saleyard complex from the start of the Beef Australia event in May. The McCormack family won the second Beef in 1991 with Droughtmaster steers from their Dilga property at Glenmorgan, Qld. The Nobbs Cattle Co won in 1997 with Droughtmaster-Limousin cross steers from their Cungelella enterprise at Springsure.

The McKenzies won in 2018 with Droughtmaster-Simmental cross heifers, but every other win was chalked up with pure Droughtmaster steers.

“It means seven of the past 11 Beef Weeks have been dominated by Droughtmaster in the commercial

“The weight gain was just first rate and stayed consistent,” Mr McKenzie says.

“Cattle that are fed for Beef Week go into feedlots about Christmas time or in January and stay there for a minimum of 100-130 days so they’re feeding in those hot and humid conditions.

“It’s a natural advantage that the softer, hairier breeds just don’t have, and the proof is in the results of what Droughtmaster cattle have been able to achieve over more than three decades.”

“There’s about 2-3 million head in a 300 km radius from Rockhampton, and Droughtmaster are at the nucleus of this highly productive region.

“It tells me that Droughtmaster are highly functional cattle – the trueblue all-rounder ideally suited to our environment and the specifications required by the modern beef market – whether domestic or export.”

Fellow Central Queensland Droughtmaster stud breeder and beef producer Cliff Mylrea has come close to winning the top prize at Beef since first entering the competition in the 90s.

Last Beef they presented the reserve champion grassfed pen of females drafted from their commercial herd at Rookwood, 100 km north west of Rockhampton, which also houses their Needmor Droughtmaster stud.

“To produce champion animals, you have to have them on a rising plane of nutrition from the moment they are weaned,” Mr McKenzie says.

While nutrition plays a critical role in the animals’ preparation, central to the success of any beef enterprise, Mr McKenzie says, is the role played by females.

Operating within the world of stud breeding and commercial cattle trading has given him a welldefined and finely-attuned lens through which he views exhibits before him in the show arena.

“The secret to Ken’s well-deserved record, I think, is his ability to put together what I call the perfect ten.

“I’m looking for well-balanced, industry relevant cattle with sound structure and fertility traits,” he said.

THE NEWLY announced judge for the Droughtmaster stud ring at Beef has some valuable tips for exhibitors.

Mr McKenzie admits he’s a perfectionist in his approach to cattle management, but the attention to detail has paid off not only in the competition arena but with even lines of feeder steers presenting an attractive purchase for buyers in the current market.

Glen Waldron, who has a history in the stud game as a former fitter, now-turned stud breeder, is acutely aware of the exacting preparation required to have cattle ready for the show ring – especially a stage as prominent and important as Beef Australia.

“The females in my opinion are underestimated and under-valued.

The bulls get all the glory, especially at sale time and the steers win the commercial competitions, but the cow always stays at home to do the job without the recognition.”

with plenty of Droughtmaster commercial cattle, either as cross-bred or purebred animals.

“It’s a tough ask,” Mr Mylrea says.

Achieving highly productive progeny starts with lines of bulls from their own Yaralla stud, joined to breeding females from late October until the end of February on their native eucalypt country at Pearl Creek near Duaringa.

“And the beauty of all those options is that the cow can deliver that flexibility with very little input – a low maintenance, easy-care cow beautifully adapted to her environment.

JUDGED TO PERFECTION

The Mylreas also produced the grand champion carcase at the 2018 CQ Carcase Classic, suggesting 2021 could be their year.

“Some of us can exhibit eight or nine good animals but assembling ten in a pen of high-quality animals, of even conformation and type, is just so rare and challenging to achieve.”

“There’s a lot of good cattle out there, but it’s hard to go past the Droughtmaster cow – she’s just a cracker. Her off-spring can fit into any market – they can go live export, MSA, Jap Ox, butchers and restaurants in Brisbane and trade steers for the supermarkets.

These days Mr Waldron runs a Black Simmental and Charolais stud with his partner Kim Groner at Meandarra, Qld. He also works as a livestock agent for GDL at Meandarra, a role that brings him into contact

“We don’t want any extremes – signs of highly functional cattle are what I want to see and what the industry needs, more importantly.

“For bulls that means good leg structure, tidy sheath and testicles and sound conformation, and good butt shape and weightfor-age as the value adds in terms of carcase attributes.

“For the females it’s a blend of their femininity and their structural correctness plus a bit of eye appeal.”

Mr Waldron has never judged at Beef before, but brings experience from judging at royal shows in Perth and Sydney and the Brahman World Congress in Rockhampton in 2016.

GATTON FUTURITY SHOW 6 MARCH 2021, GATTON SHOWGROUNDS The 36th Annual Droughtmaster Futurity Show will be one of the first cattle shows held since COVID-19 shut down shows in 2020.

With Beef 2021 in early May nominations for the Futurity in early March are expected to be high.

Traditionally there is a BBQ at the Showgrounds near the cattle shed on the Friday prior to the Saturday show. All Droughtmaster breeders, friends and interested people are invited to join the exhibitors. The BBQ is scheduled to be held on 5th March, however due to the current conditions we ask you to check our website and facebook pages for updates.

All going well 6th of March we would love to see everyone at the Showgrounds, please bring a chair and don’t forget your hat. Refreshments and food are available to purchase during the day.

NATIONAL FEMALE SALE The 40th National Female Sale will be held on the 13th of March, at the Gympie Saleyards, starting at 9 am. The sale is well known for the quality of females selected for the catalogue.

All lots catalogued for the sale will be available for inspection from 3pm Friday, March 12th – the inspections lead into a BBQ which starts at 6.30pm. There may be changes made to the BBQ in line with government regulations and we ask you check the Droughtmaster website and social pages for updates.

A total of 30 new and returning vendors will be offering 140 high class females. The draft consists of 1 Cow and Calf, 9 Joined females and 130 Unjoined females.

Stocklive will be hosting the livestreaming and online bidding service. Online bidding and viewing of lots prior to and during the sale can be assessed via the links on the National Female Sale page within the Droughtmaster website www.droughtmaster.com.au

The 7th Annual High Country On Property Sale kicked off the Spring bull selling season offering 36 bulls and 20 females, achieving a 100% clearance with record averages.

The High Country Sale went ahead amid COVID restrictions making the online bidding and viewing popular.

The sale had 77 online bidders and 254 people logged in to watch.

Stonebridge Droughtmasters purchased the top priced bull High Country Innovative for $21,000.

High Country Innovative was 22months, 914kg with an impressive whole of life ADG of 1.38kg, EMA of 138 and IMF% of 5.2. Other notable bull purchases were: Country Illusion sold to * High Glenlands D Droughtmasters for $20,000.

A frantic pace of bidding was set from the first lot of the day as some of Queensland’s beef industry-leading commercial cattlemen and stud breeders chased the elite highperformance genetics on offer.

The tone was set as Lot 1, a 27-month old polled herd bull of Mac and Gayle Shann’s Lamont Stud, sold under the hammer for $22,000. A bull that was described to carry plenty of thick muscle and bone with a large frame.

The highly respected stud principal of Medway Droughtmasters, Hastings Donaldson, acquired two future stud sires - Lot 9 for $17,000 (a 26-month old Hamadra Garrison son who showed plenty of thickness, good bone and plenty of width along the spine), and Lot 10, a son of Mungalla Edgar who at 27 months showed a good strong head backed with plenty of breed character. Both these bulls were offered by Kylie Graham and Mat Durkin, Mungalla Stud.

breed Herdsmen Award largely due to Margaret’s pride in the breed and its presentation to the public.

Margaret’s enormous achievements as a Droughtmaster breeder are only matched by her generosity of spirit, her devotion to the Society, and her selfless commitment to help others.

Because of her continuous and tremendous contribution towards the betterment of the breed and its members, Margaret was recognised with Life Membership to the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society in 2015.

By Jenny Underwood MARGARET has been a Droughtmaster breeder for much of her life. In 1978, alongside her late husband, Peter, Margaret took on the responsibility of the running of Truvalle, one of the early studs formed (Stud number 22) when the Droughtmaster was recognised as a standalone breed.

The Truvalle Droughtmaster herd gained a reputation far and wide for its stud and commercial cattle, topping and setting new records at bull and female sales, excelling in the showring, and leading the market at store sales.

Not only did Margaret dedicate her life to her prized Truvalle herd, she also devoted much of her time and energy to the Droughtmaster breed and its membership. Margaret was one of the first females to hold a position as a National Director on the Board of the Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society.

Margaret loved being able to assist new studs and young breeders starting out in the world of showing cattle. For 10 years she volunteered her time and extensive knowledge at the annual Gympie Handling School, preparing young exhibitors for what they needed to know when attending shows. Many Droughtmaster exhibitors owe their success to the guidance given by Margaret, not only in preparing their animals, but learning how to conduct themselves as well.

This love of youth and showing laid the foundations for decades

of service to the Droughtmaster breed; in particular as Shed Captain at the Royal Brisbane Show, and the Gatton Futurity held annually in March.

The Wilsons, along with Val and Neil Evans and Ray Phillips, established the Gatton Futurity in the early 1980s. The Futurity has been the stepping-stone into the showring for generations of Droughtmaster enthusiasts. Every year, Margaret is a familiar figure in her role as Ring Steward at the increasingly popular event.

In August, the Ekka becomes Margaret’s temporary home.

Well before the stud judging commences on the first Thursday of the Ekka, Margaret heads to Brisbane to prepare the shed for the exhibitors and their cattle. As Shed Captain for over 30 years, Margaret has ensured that the breed has the best vantage point, allocating stalls and tie-up areas for exhibitors, as well as ensuring that Droughtmaster is prominent throughout the stud cattle section.

The dispersal was incorporated into the annual Cream of the Crop Female Sale held at Coolabunia on 28 November. As a testament to the reputation of the Truvalle herd, a huge crowd of buyers and well-wishers travelled from many areas of Queensland and northern NSW to attend the sale with many purchasing the prized bloodlines on offer. While it was a sad day, the dispersal achieved a 100% clearance.

Thank you for your service, Margaret. Your influence will long be remembered and your decades of selfless dedication is much appreciated by us all.

Brisbane brewer beefs up product profile with a certified Queensland icon A PASSION for Droughtmaster cattle is inspiring a new taste sensation for beer lovers from a Queensland brewer on the rise.

Wholly Queensland owned and operated Newstead Brewery is developing a new midstrength product due to be launched as Droughtie MidStrength Lager in March.

The 100 per cent family-owned brewery, which turns out more than one million litres of beer a year and runs two popular venues in Brisbane, is confident of delivering a “refreshing but robust” lager for beer drinkers in the mid-strength market that will be available in hotels and bottle shops.

“This type of lager has been missing from the Newstead Brewery product suite for some time,

so we’re looking forward to the date when this new lager will be launched,” says owner Peter Howes.

“We believe beer drinkers will enjoy the clean and crisp flavour of this naturally brewed craft lager, perfect for our summer weather.

“We’re confident that ordering a “Droughtie” from the bar or local bottle shop will really catch on – not just for people in regional Queensland but further afield across our distribution network interstate.”

Droughtmaster members and beer drinkers may recall a short-lived Droughtmaster Lager that was first produced by the Japanese beverage giant Asahi in 2019.

Asahi’s acquisition of Australianowned CUB in mid 2020 saw that licensing arrangement come to an end, creating an opening for Newstead Brewery’s Peter Howes, whose relationship with the Droughtmaster breed goes back to the early 90s.

Maleny beef He and business partner John McKeon run Balmoral Ridge in the high rainfall zone of the Sunshine Coast hinterland near Maleny.

The 60-hectare block is currently home to about 40 breeders and calves, thriving on the undulating country’s rich native and improved pastures nourished by the district’s average 2.5 metre yearly rainfall.

While numbers are slightly back due to recent drier seasons, the herd is rebounding, supported by quality genetics on the sire line via early purchases from Billabong and Talgai studs, and the establishment of a core breeder group based on females bought from Glenlands stud.

“We didn’t just fall into Droughtmasters by accident,” Mr Howes explains.

“We researched extensively what cattle would perform the best on our country, which obviously comes with high rainfall, but also has its

“In order to give us the best shot at success we went with Droughtmaster and paid well for high quality genetics. When you look at the calves that we continue to produce here, and the ease with which this herd is managed, you soon realise that quality is never expensive.”

Peter Howes and his son Mark, who founded Newstead Brewery using his doctorate in molecular cell biochemistry with a graduate diploma in brewing – and a deep love for beer – take the same approach with their growing portfolio of beer varieties.

Using high-grade malting barley from the Darling Downs, head brewer Luke Monks and his team submit the premium ingredients to a more complex process, delivering a deeper flavour profile and longer finish than beers produced by many mainstream breweries.

commitment to excellence and recycling, with the spent brewers’ grain supplied as a supplementary feed to maintain a higher and more consistent plane of nutrition for mothering females and steers being prepared for sale.

“We probably go through about five tonnes of spent grain a week, with each mature animal eating about 30 kg per day,” says John McKeon, who also operates as Balmoral Ridge’s livestock manager with his wife Karen.

“They just love it and they convert the energy really efficiently, laying down fat and flavour that’s bringing sweetness and tenderness to the beef.”

So impressed are they with the result, the two business partners are looking at marketing a Maleny Droughtmaster Beef brand, that they will process locally and channel through the two Newstead brewpubs and restaurants at Newstead and Milton in Brisbane.

Mid-Strength Lager, of course,” adds Mr Howes.

The branded beef concept, in concert with the Droughtie MidStrength Lager development, has received a big thumbs up from Droughtmaster Australia GM Simon Gleeson.

“Last year we launched our new brand position as ‘Australia’s natural wonder’, and encouraged steak diners and shoppers to start asking for Droughtmaster beef by name,” he said.

“We also welcome food suppliers and those in the food service channel adding Droughtmaster beef by name to their inventories or menus as a way to promote the breed and remind Australians that they have a homegrown product that is ideally suited to our environment and is ethically produced, which also happens to be healthy and taste great.

“I congratulate Newstead Brewery on the steps they are taking to bring the story of Droughtmaster beef to a new market.”

Earle Ball’s switch to Droughtmasters in 2014 proves there’s benefits to looking over your neighbour’s fence.

A chance encounter with two “cracking Droughtmaster heifers” has laid the foundation for a promising 2021 for Earle Ball, at Brassils Creek, 40 km north west of Kempsey, NSW. After taking over the 1200-hectare property six years ago, the butcherturned-beef producer, and his brother and business partner, Kevin, were branding their Angus herd when two slick-coated, red coloured females appeared among the draft.

“We were like, ‘hello, here’s a couple of really good-looking heifers, they’ll be good keepers’,” recalls Mr Ball.

“Turns out they weren’t ours; they were our neighbour’s.” (The cattle belonged to Maurice O’Neill; whose story also appears in this edition).

“But that’s how the seed was planted,” Mr Ball adds.

“I thought ‘if country like ours can produce cattle of that quality, why on earth are we still persisting with these Angus things’?

“We needed to make a change.”

No looking back Six years later, after enduring prolonged drought and fires in 2019 that claimed a portion of his herd and damaged property infrastructure, there is no going back to black cattle.

“Apart from a little bit of crossbreeding that we do, putting Droughtmaster bulls over Angus females, it’s now all the way with Droughties,” Mr Ball said.

“They just suit our country and our climate so well and have that ability to adapt when your seasons

can be so up and down. Goodness knows, we’ve seen a lot of that in recent years.

“I’m not sure how we might have fared had we not had a Droughtmaster herd.”

For Mr Ball, running with Droughtmasters is a compelling argument.

“Firstly, they are highly resistant to pink eye and blight and not as vulnerable to paralysis ticks,” he said.

“I haven’t done all the calculations but when you add up all of those benefits it equals time and money saved across the whole enterprise.”

Solid option for NSW Like his own journey with the breed, Mr Ball is now encouraging other beef producers across his district to broaden their outlook, consider what options may be available to them, and, maybe, even take a look over their neighbour’s fence to see the difference in Droughtmaster performance on tough country.

“I reckon there’s high demand for Droughties here and, in all honesty, demand should probably be higher,” he said.

“If you look out over the range there’s places there that have just come through the worst droughts they’ve ever had.

“If you’re running British breed cattle and they’re doing poorly and your neighbour’s Droughties are doing well then you might need to ask yourself some serious questions about whether it’s time to make a switch.

“That was the process I went through. It didn’t come without its challenges, but I can safely say we haven’t looked back.”

Adaptation a key asset After adverse weather has dogged beef production to various levels across the region, 2021 is looking a vastly improved prospect for Mr Ball and his brother, who is based in Sydney.

NEWS At the time of writing in early January, the property had received 260 mm of rain the previous fortnight, more than a quarter of the district’s 1000 mm average yearly rainfall.

The welcome rain gave his flatter, cultivated country sown to millet and sorghum a much-needed boost, well timed for light steers to convert plant energy into more muscle and richer condition.

With more moisture in the soil profile, his cultivation in the winter will be turned back to rye and oats, perfectly timed for weaners from the previous year’s calf-drop.

“We have about 270 breeders here at the moment, which is back from 300 as a result of drought and fires, but we have heaps of calves on the ground,” he said.

“As soon as they are weaned, they will go onto that sorghum and put on a kilo a day. Prices are just so good for fat cattle at the moment that we’ll take them through to a finished weight to chase those premiums.

“It’s another advantage of the Droughties – the options they give you. If the season turns, you can crack them off early and

put them into a feedlot or finish them on grass with your own grain supplementation. Either way you don’t really lose.”

Grain assistance supports a pasture-feeding programme, based largely on native grasses that grow abundantly on the property’s hillier country.

“They do really well in those hills,” Mr Ball said. “They are calm, contented cattle that forage well and convert feed efficiently.”

Drawing on his retail butcher background, Mr Ball says he knows and appreciates the value of cattle that eat well and the time and preparation required to produce the kinds of beef consumers want to enjoy.

Last year at the annual Ray White Grown Steer and Yearling Sale in Kempsey he presented the champion pen of export feeder steers and the reserve pen of domestic feeder steers, all at milk-tooth dentition.

LOW MAINTENANCE, HIGH REWARDS AT KEMPSEY

Beef producer and selfdescribed ‘one-man-band’, Maurice O’Neill takes a nofuss, low-touch approach to cattle management that wouldn’t have been possible without Droughtmaster flexibility and adaptability.

Veteran cattleman Maurice O’Neill’s family have been producing beef in the northern NSW region for the best part of a century, initially with Herefords before introducing Brahman genetics to build tropical content in the herd.

The exercise proved trickier than first envisaged, Mr O’Neill recalls.

“It was all a bit of a juggling act and we could never get the balance quite right,” he said.

“We’d put high content bulls over low content cows and vice versa, but we’d end up with either too much tropical infusion or too much the other way.

“At the time we were trying to resolve our tick burden by getting the coats slicker, while maintaining softness in our end product and nothing was quite working out.

We’d come to a bit of a dead-end.”

A casual conversation about his dilemma with Droughtmaster life member Ed McCormack provided a welcome ‘fork-in-the-road’ moment for Mr O’Neill, setting the path of his operation on a completely new trajectory.

“Ed, of course, suggested I should seriously look at Droughties,” he said.

“And it just so happened that he was having a sale at the time, which back then was a joint Clonlara-Glen Fosslyn sale.

“I bought two bulls at that sale and from there we just bred-on, which also started my long and happy association with those two studs as well as Glenlands over the years.”

Tough country, adaptable cattle Mr O’Neill operates a 2800-hectare enterprise across four blocks spanning the Macleay and Nambucca Shires in northern NSW.

The country includes steep hills, running to river flats of Rhodes grass and kikuyu, as well as thickly timbered pockets classified as rainforest.

“It’s difficult country but the Droughties handle it very well,” Mr O’Neill said.

“If you had British-breed bulls on this place they’d spend their time lying around waterholes, but these Droughtie fellas are constantly on the march, getting the job done.”

Partly due to the complexity of the terrain and because he likes to take advantage of different opportunities in the market when the ‘price is right’, Mr O’Neill runs his enterprise in the style of a far more extensive operation.

There is no set joining period and therefore no designated calving window for the 1000-strong breeding herd.

Bulls are left to run with females all-year round, and breeder groups and steers are rotated through paddocks to prevent overgrazing and to allow pastures to regenerate.

A sole operator for most of the year, Mr O’Neill only contracts extra labour during times of mustering.

“There’s no great science as to how I go about things, we just stick to the basics,” Mr O’Neill said.

“It suits my operation to just leave the bulls in and keep the calves coming all the time. That way I have options to meet the market as it fluctuates.

“I can put a mob together and finish them on grass or I can hang onto them for a bit longer and put them into my feedlot and pick up some extra premiums there.

“There’s no penalties no matter which way you go.”

‘They almost run themselves’ Mr O’Neill is convinced that had he not switched to Droughtmaster 30 years ago, there is a fair chance he would have exited the industry a long time ago.

“The flexibility offered by Droughtmasters is the biggest advantage they have.”

Mr O’Neill is also thankful he made the switch to Droughtmaster at a time of wildly variable weather.

“Look, I’m no climate change advocate, but the weather has certainly changed in the last 30 years,” he said.

“The dry spells are hotter and longer and the wet seasons are more intense – it’s like the tropical extremes have steadily come further south.

“We have buffalo fly here now that wasn’t here a decade ago.

“If you’re still hanging onto bushy black cattle, the ticks and flies will be eating them, and they’re susceptible to blight. You run Droughties, and all of those problems are removed.”

Despite long-running success with the breed, Mr O’Neill will still dabble in cross-breeding if he thinks the market will pay a premium for the progeny, although recently he’s been having doubts about its long-term value.

“They are quiet, even temperament animals and if you keep the feed up to these Droughties, they almost run themselves.

“We’ve brought the occasional black bull in, to see if we can get the higher prices for black weaners, but they’re so much slower at growing, and on top of the additional management costs to protect them from flies and blight, I’m not convinced that you’re any further ahead,” he said.

“With Herefords you were out riding around paddocks all day checking

“I really can’t think of any breed that I could manage on my own at my age over such a large area,” he said.

POSITIVE CONDITIONS POSITION Record high prices for commercial cattle in Western Australia bode well for the state’s biggest bos Indicus sale confirmed for April 8.

By BRAD COOPER IN A long running tradition, Droughtmasters are again expected to dominate the field presented for the annual Narngulu Invitational Bos Indicus Bull Sale.

Conducted by Nutrien Livestock, the sale is an all-WA affair, showcasing some of the state’s best Tropical breed genetics to buyers that mainly hail from WA’s large northern pastoral zones, particularly the Pilbara, Gascoyne, Murchison and Goldfields regions.

Nutrien Livestock’s western region commercial cattle manager, Paul Mahony, says ongoing herd rebuilding in the eastern states

has the potential to generate continued purchasing of highquality, well-bred heifers.

The surge in demand for highly functional, fertile cattle may see a similar buying pattern unfold when the Tropical breeds go under the hammer at Narngulu, near Geraldton.

“Investment in quality genetics has paid off in spades for WA pastoralists in 2020,” Mr Mahony said.

“Local and eastern restockers have been a major factor in well-bred steers reaching record prices.”

Mr Mahony’s assessment is especially good news for vendors,

with the Narngulu sale paused in 2019 due to adverse seasonal conditions and last year’s sale off the pace on previous benchmarks due to Covid-generated uncertainty.

Droughtmaster bulls dominated last year’s yarding of 114 lots, with 93 bulls offered between two renowned WA Droughtmaster vendors - the Mutton family, Fieldhouse stud, Wickepin and Dick Vincent, De Grey Park stud, Capel.

Nine different buyers helped clear 49 of the 93 bulls offered, sold at an average of $3,602.

Not only did Droughtmaster dominate the yarding numbers, it also commanded the sale’s $5,500 top price.

NARNGULU SALE FOR SUCCESS With rain falling in some parts of WA’s northern pastoral belt already this summer – coupled with the state’s sound management of the pandemic and organisers better prepared for holding a ‘Covidsafe’ event – key elements for success look to be in alignment, according to Mr Mahony.

“If pastoral producers have a season the bull sales should have strong support,” he said.

While the industry remains confronted with current challenges such as variable climate, pandemic restrictions and trade spats with China, the live export suspension of 2011 still looms large in the collective memory of beef producers, reflected in stronger buying patterns toward cattle of a more dual-purpose nature.

“The live export trade ban in 2011 was a real defining moment for producers in WA, especially in the north of the state,” Mr Mahony said.

“What they’re looking for now is cattle that can find a home in either the live trade or on-shore processing.

“That really plays to the strength of a breed like Droughtmaster.”

Looking for that flexibility was certainly in the minds of beef producers Jim and Lorraine Dorrell, Clovermia Grazing, Mia Mia station, Carnarvon, who purchased last year’s top price bull via bidding from Nutrien Livestock Pilbara/ Gascoyne agent Shane Flemming.

The 2020 sale was a triumph for the Fieldhouse stud, whose naturally polled sire – described

by Mr Flemming as a “well balanced, soft-fleshing, trueto-type Droughtmaster” – attracted spirited interest among bidders from the outset.

According to WA agricultural newspaper Farm Weekly, the Dorrells run a Droughtmaster herd as the breed fits well with their country and provides market versatility.

“We can sell the progeny to live export markets but we also have market relationships with lotfeeders in the Wheatbelt as they are good, soft fleshing type cattle,” Mr Dorrell told Farm Weekly after the 2020 sale.

“We also place a strong emphasis on fertility in our herd and we have found Droughtmasters also excel in this trait.”

‘OUR STORY’ LAUNCH 2020 SIMON GLEESON, Droughtmaster Australia General Manager, is on a mission. In the next 12 months, he wants consumers to start asking for Australia’s natural wonder – Droughtmaster – by name.

He said the cattle industry is the lifeblood of Australia and like many sectors is facing many questions around sustainability, versatility and long-term production. But, he said, Droughtmaster could answer all those questions as the breed thrived in Australia’s harsh conditions.

Mr Gleeson made the declaration at the launch of the Society’s “Our Story” campaign on November 20, which urged people to ask for Droughtmaster by name at their local pub or butcher. The event, aimed at both the wider beef and agricultural industry as well as all others in the supply chain, highlighted the breed’s adaptability and suitability for Australia’s environment, its sustainability, and the Society’s plans for the future.

Todd Heyman, Droughtmaster Australia President, said in the next 10 to 20 years, the Society wanted to solidify the breed’s

reputation as a “great Australian all-rounder” thanks to advantages such as their quiet temperament and resistance to parasites. He said breeders were beginning to see a bigger return on investment.

“I think one of the good things we see with that return is the fact that the cattle are able to persevere [through conditions],” he said.

Celebrity chef Andrew Mirosch said Droughtmaster beef was perfectly suited for the dining scene. “Hotels, pubs and clubs are over fatty beef and I think things are changing,” he said. “I don’t think anyone wants to eat a highly marbled piece of meat, I think it’s more about the flavour and tenderness now. There will always be Waygu and others but flavour is increasingly more important.”

Fellow breeder Ken McKenzie, who runs two properties in Central Queensland (one being Yaralla Droughtmasters), said Droughtmasters were a “sensational” animal that gave producers many options, especially during hard times.

Andrew said provenance was “absolutely number one” in dining and consumers were becoming more interested in where their food was from. “There is a whole new culture thanks to cooking shows and everything that has gone on in the last 10 years.”

Heat to a simmer and reduce over heat by half.

4 Brush with ¾ of brush sauce. Wrap cooked brisket in baking paper and foil, return to smoker for 2 more hours.

5 Remove foil, slice and serve with homemade slaw, boiled buttered potatoes and extra brush sauce

• 100ml rice wine vinegar • 100ml soy sauce • ½ tsp sesame oil • 1 tsp ginger grated

• 1 tsp sugar • 50g white sesame Centre cut eye fillet well• trimmed and cut into 2 logs • Soy sauce, sliced shallots, sesame seaweed to serve • Wasabi paste 100g black sesame •

1 Mix well – vinegar, soy, sesame oil, ginger and sugar.

Marinate eye fillet in mix for 2-3 hours turning occasionally 2 Drain fillet, smear with wasabi then roll in sesame seeds to coat well 3 Sear fillet on all sides then wrap in plastic wrap very tightly. Chill for a few hours 4 Slice thinly, serve with a drizzle of soy sauce, some sliced shallots, and sesame seaweed salad if available You could also serve with sushi rice, pickled ginger and Japanese mayo

John Warlters, Chief Executive Officer of Rural Aid said drought was still very real for many producers, especially in Queensland where thankfully the festive season delivered some families their first decent rain all year.

“Where there has been a break, producers have moved quickly to get back on their feet but it takes more than one good harvest or the sale of a few steers or wethers to get balance sheets back in the black.

A TOTAL of 730 rural families are set to receive financial support thanks to a city-based fundraiser led by stockbroking and wealth management network Morgans Financial Limited.

Australian charity Rural Aid, Morgans’ charity partner, will be dispersing the funds to farmers on their register who have requested much-needed support.

Morgans held the fundraiser, Little Dry Friday, on 27 November 2020, with the aim of creating awareness of farmers in regional and rural Australia suffering financial hardship due to ongoing adverse weather conditions.

The campaign raised more than $365,000 thanks to generous donations by Morgans staff, clients, business partners and friends, Staff held raffles, a fundraising lunch, breakfast events, an online

Little Dry Friday is the small but mighty iteration of Big Dry Friday, which Morgans ran in 2018 and 2019, raising a combined total of more than $2 million for farmers suffering through one of the worst droughts in recent history.

Morgans’ Executive Chairman Brian Sheahan said the annual fundraiser is a day to connect with regional Australia, as well as an opportunity to band together and offer support.

“The idea is to create a day of connection to think about the issues suffered by regional Australia,” he said.

Families are optimistic but fragile.

The RFDS has been saving lives in regional, rural and remote Australia for more than 92 years.

In addition to the 24/7 aeromedical retrieval of the critically-ill or injured, the RFDS also delivers a broad range of essential primary and preventative healthcare services, including telehealth, mental health, oral health and chronic disease management.

In addition to assisting rural and remote Australians, the RFDS also delivers critical support to those who live in urban centres.

This includes the regular transfer of patients to interstate hospitals for life-saving surgery such as organ transplant and heart surgery on newborn babies.

Established in Queensland in 1928 by the Reverend John Flynn, the RFDS has grown to become the world’s largest and most comprehensive aeromedical organisation, comprising a fleet of 75 aircraft, the operation of 24 aeromedical bases and six remote primary health care facilities.

Services are delivered on a day-to-day basis by six RFDS operating sections – Central Operations (serving SA/NT), Queensland Section, South Eastern Section (serving NSW/ACT), Tasmania Section, Victoria Section and Western Operations (serving WA).

Today the RFDS delivers more than 370,000 episodes of patient care across Australia every year – equivalent to assisting someone every two minutes.

The RFDS is a not-for-profit organisation. While supported by Commonwealth, State and Territory governments, the RFDS depends on bequests, fundraising and donations

to bridge the gap in operational funding and to finance its capitalraising program for the replacement of aircraft, medical equipment and other major capital initiatives.

The RFDS has been voted eight times Australia’s Most Reputable Charity by the Reputation Institute Charity Reputation Index.

Mr Little, who was the Local Hero for the Longreach region, was announced as the statewide winner.

Bede Little, the Queensland Police Service Senior Constable for Ilfracombe in Central Queensland, loves his work and has the outback in his blood.

Bede Little The 2020 RFDS Queensland Hero is Bede Little, a first responder who has also fundraised for the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS).

Every year, the RFDS recognises Queenslanders who donate their time and energy to keep the Flying Doctor in the air and assisting the communities which need it the most.

Nine individuals or groups – each representing a RFDS base location – were named the RFDS Local Hero Award winners for 2020. Community

Fortunately for the person in the aircraft, Mr Little was able to assist until the RFDS arrived.

His work in the community extends much further than policing due to the remote nature of his beat and the struggles experienced across the region due to drought.

Last year, Mr Little, along with a few key community members, organised a family fun day as a way to unite the community, boost morale and open up a conversation around mental health.

Representatives of the RFDS Outback Mental Health team were invited to speak with attendees.

In addition to hosting stalls showcasing local wares, activities and competitions, the event raised $4,000 for the RFDS. RFDS (Queensland Section) CEO Meredith Staib congratulated Mr Little on being named the 2020 RFDS Queensland Hero.

“This year’s RFDS Local Hero Award winners were an especially inspiring group of Queenslanders,” she said.

“To be judged our Queensland Hero by way of public vote is a testament to the impact which Mr Little has no doubt had on his community.

“Mr Little’s actions also clearly resonated with the wider voting public, as community members statewide learnt more about his story via the Local Hero website.

“I’d like to extend my sincere thanks to everyone who voted and in doing so, took the time to acknowledge the wonderful work of our supporters.”

Mr Little will now receive a $7,500 grant, courtesy of Ergon Energy Retail, to give back to his community through delivery of a healthcare initiative.

PROJECT UPDATE No 9 Spyglass-bred Droughtmaster steers which are being finished on grass at “Warraka” prior to slaughter mid-year.

By Roger Underwood The Droughtmaster Stud Breeders’ Society (DSBS), Australian Brahman Breeders’ Association (ABBA) and a consortium of Santa Gertrudis Breeders are currently conducting a joint progeny test project with funding assistance from the Meat & Livestock Australia Donor Company under the Beef Information Nucleus (BIN) program.

This joint Northern BIN Steer Project has utilised the steer progeny from a second MLAfunded project ‘Enabling genetic improvement of reproduction in tropical beef breeds (Repronomics)’.

The project has currently purchased six cohorts of steers from “Spyglass” and four cohorts of steers from “Brian Pastures”.

The Northern BIN Steer Project will provide data which will assist in the implementation of a multibreed database and a future Tropical crossbred analysis.

No 9 steers which had been bred at Spyglass Research Station (Sept 2020).

These steers will be finished on grass at “Warraka” then sent to slaughter mid-year.

This is possible as the Brahman and Droughtmaster steers (at “Spyglass” and “Brian Pastures”) and also Santa Gertrudis steers at “Brian Pastures” have been run together since birth, having only been split during the joining period of their dams in the Northern BIN Steer Project.

The original project began in 2013. The Droughtmaster steers are by over 100 Droughtmaster sires (representing 35 different stud prefixes) with the sires of the project steers either influential sires with a large number of registered progeny (a few of which have been performance recorded with BREEDPLAN) or young up and coming bulls.

The data collected is building a reference population data base for the participating breeds with the performance data directly linked to the animal’s genomic sequence.

This will allow, when sufficient data has been collected, for members to take a tissue sample (tail hairs or ear punch) to get the animal’s genomic sequence, have that analysed in the Society’s Single Step BREEDPLAN and get back genomic breeding values (GBV’s) of a wide range of traits, including the hard to measure traits being recorded in the BIN project.

The reference population needs to cover a wide spectrum of the genetics in each breed as well as sufficiently large numbers to deliver GBV’s with reasonable accuracy.

The first weigh day was held on 3 September with all the No 9 steers (Droughtmaster, Beefmaster and Brahmans) in the project weighed and fat scanned. On 24 November, the No 0 steers (Droughtmaster, Brahman and Santa) were weighed and fly-tagged.

The purpose of the BIN Steer Project is not to compare breeds or to compare specific animals within each breed, but rather to gather data which can be used to predict traits to improve genetic reproduction of tropical beef breeds as a whole.

TOOGOOLAWAH STATE HIGH SCHOOL

2020 WAS a tough year for the Toogoolawah State High School Droughtmaster Stud and Cattle Show Team, but even without physical shows to attend, youngsters were still learning all the ins and outs of showing cattle.

Thanks to the wonders of technology, students like 14-yearold Chelsea Harvey, who don’t have much experience in talking in front of large crowds, got to practice from the safety of their own school.

Ag Teacher Angela Lynch said the club’s 10 students participated in a number of online virtual competitions, with one student placing third in the Ekka’s led steers competition and another winning second place in the prime cattle section of the Toogoolawah Show Society’s virtual show.

Chelsea, like many of her fellow club members, comes from a cattle background, and said the virtual shows gave her a huge boost in confidence.

“I found it very helpful that I didn’t have to speak in front of people,” she said.

Although the students did also participate in a few in-person sales (they sold a bull at the Bunya Bull sale for $7,000, three heifers at the Cream of the Crop sale for $2,000 each) and they also attended Gatton Futurity earlier in the year, Ag Assistant Ross Tinney said the virtual competitions did wonders for their public speaking confidence.

“I’m not sure if the virtual shows will still continue (into 2021), but they’ve been really good for the country kids, who get a bit nervous when it comes to public speaking,” he said. “It’s a good

opportunity for them to get a bit more experience in judging.”

The Stud started in 2016 when the McConnel family of Mt Brisbane Droughtmaster Stud donated some cattle after hearing Mr Tinney, who runs his own Droughtmaster property and had known the family for many years, had wanted to start a school stud. The club runs 12 head of cattle, which includes the foundation herd of six cows from the McConnels.

There were some bulls as well, but they have since been sold.

“One of those first heifers won the Supreme Exhibit at the Gatton Futurity in 2017 and went on to be shown and placed at the Ekka with a bull calf at foot, so the kids have done well and we are extremely proud of them.”

Mt Brisbane’s Carli McConnel said, “When Ross asked what we thought of the school starting a stud we jumped at the chance to be involved as, although our kids didn’t attend the school, we knew plenty that had. Ross had been a huge help to us when we started to show cattle so we knew they would be in good hands.”

“It has been very rewarding seeing young inexperienced students lead the cattle out for the first time then as the years go on see them being snapped up to help with other studs. Our family started this way so we feel it is important that studs help students in any way they can.” It is the first year that students Axel Henderson, 12, and James Shum, 13, have been involved so they are both very much looking forward to being able to head to in-person shows in 2021. “I’m hoping to lead at shows with the other guys and just to have a whole lot more fun hanging out with cattle and doing what I do,” Axel said.

“We offered them the pick of the heifer and bull weaner calves and when they chose one we offered them their second choice free. They then chose a third heifer as what we asked was lower than their budget.

We also settled on a couple of bulls in the deal. They then showed them, and we got part of the eventual sale price back. Sign of Appreciation Chelsea, who has been in the club for a few years now and has experienced what a live show is like, said she missed being able to attend those shows and couldn’t wait to get back into it.

Ms Lynch said the Droughtmaster Society had been very helpful whenever they needed support and the kids were pleased to have received shirts and hats from the Society, but it was always the first-hand experience and guidance received from breeders that was of greatest benefit.

“We’ve had people who have shown them how to groom and prepare the cattle, as well as giving them tips on public speaking,” she said. “And that’s what we found online, they were able to connect with people who shared their tips and tricks.”

WHILE other teenagers are out doing what teenagers do best, George Smith is setting himself up for the future. Inspired by his family’s commercial cattle business, which was somewhat of a hobby for his father Scott Smith, the now 16-year-old decided he wanted to start up his own stud - the S6 Droughtmaster Stud in Dobies Bight, New South Wales.

So, George and Scott headed off to the 2018 Coolabunia Cream of the Crop sale, where they intended on buying just one heifer, however after running into Oakmore Park Droughtmaster Studmaster Sharon Harms, they not only ended up with the beginning of their stud, but also a mentor too.

“His (George’s) whole enthusiasm, his willingness to listen and how keen he was just struck a chord with me,” Sharon, who is based in the Darling Downs at Greenmount, south of Toowoomba, said. “He reminded me of how my boys were when they started and it was wonderful to give these young people an opportunity and some guidance.”

Unfortunately, the drought forced Sharon to reduce her herd but the Smiths were able to turn the situation into a happy one by purchasing some more cattle from her. She said the decision to make the reduction was a hard one, but she was thrilled that they were able to find their forever home at S6 Droughtmaster.

George, who is a junior member of the Droughtmaster Society’s Far Southern Zone, said he loved watching the cattle grow from calves, breaking them in and the satisfaction of breeding a winner.

It’s not just the stud that keeps George busy, he is still attending high school, and in addition to his studies, he helps out his father at the local sawmill and works after-school shifts at Dominoes.

“He’s very dedicated and it’s not just doing the little jobs, he’s standing up with the men and working beside us,” Scott said. “I’m very proud of what he’s achieved so far and happy he’s dragged me along for the ride.”

George isn’t the only Smith who is running the stud - his little brother, 12-yearold Archie, is helping out too. “He and George are identical in a certain way and they both enjoy it,” Scott said.

The boys attended Gatton’s Futurity Show earlier in 2020, showing two bulls and a heifer and as it was their first show, Sharon lent a hand. “They did a marvellous job and it was lovely, just over 12 months later, to see the them showing,” she said.
